School Nickname

Baseball History

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Coaches/Outlook Players

2014 UCO Baseball Head Coach Dax Leone

The Warhawks set a school record for saves (14) during Leone’s first season in 2007 en route to winning 30 games and qualifying for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time in five years. In Leone’s second year at ULM, Derek Ward was named to the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year Watch List. Four pitchers earned Louisiana Pitcher of the Week or Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors during that 2008 season, which ended with the Warhawks capturing the conference title in finishing with a 34-24 record. ULM went 32-27 and was runner-up in the conference tournament during Leone’s final season in 2009. Dax spent the 2010 season at OSU, working with the pitching staff. Three Cowboy pitchers were taken in the 2010 draft. A prep standout at Shawnee, Leone started his college playing career at Seminole. He went 15-3 during two seasons there while helping the Trojans to a 107-17 record, including a national runner-up finish in 1997. Leone moved on to Texas in 1999 and went 8-6 that season, including a 6-3 mark in Big 12 Conference games. He was an Academic All-Big 12 pick as a senior in 2000. Dax, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU, is married (Amber) and has two children (Tal and Payden).

Dax Leone is in his fourth year at the helm of the Central Oklahoma program and is well on his way in getting the Bronchos back among the NCAA Division II elite. Leone, who took over the reigns in the summer of 2010 following previous stints as a head coach and assistant coach at various levels around the country and in Canada, is 85-59 with three consecutive winning seasons. His first team won 10 of its last 11 games to rally for a 24-23 finish and the Bronchos followed with a 31-17 campaign in 2012 for the first 30win season since 2008. Leone led UCO to another 30-win season in 2013 with a 30-19 record that included a third-place finish in its first season in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and a trip to the MIAA Tournament semifinals after a first-round series win over Emporia State. Four players coached by Dax were on major league rosters in 2013 -- Jeremy Hefner of the New York Mets, Tyler Lyons of the St. Louis Cardinals, Duke Welker of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Evan Gattis of the Atlanta Braves. A product of Shawnee High School who was a standout pitcher at Seminole State College and Texas, Leone came to UCO after spending one year as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State. Dax got his coaching start as the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator at East Central, spending three seasons with the Tigers. He helped lead ECU to its only Lone Star Conference North Division championship in 2004, recruited eight all-conference players and coached LSC North Division Pitcher of the Year Cory Hall, who had a 1.76 earned run average that ranks as the best in school history. Leone was also the head coach of the Kelowna (British Columbia) Falcons of the West Coast Baseball League during the summers of 2003 and ‘04, directing nine allconference players and leading the team to a 35-21 record and their first-ever division title. Leone spend the 2005 season as pitching coach at St. Gregory’s before becoming pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Seminole. He was with the Trojans for one season, directing a staff that had a 3.89 ERA, led the NJCAA in strikeouts with 481 in 432 innings and limited opponents to a .235 batting average. Of the players Leone coached in 2006, eight were drafted and six went on to sign with a Division I school. As recruiting coordinator at Seminole, Leone helped the Trojans sign one of the best classes in the junior college ranks and his last class had five players drafted. Leone went from Seminole to Division I Louisiana-Monroe in August of 2006 and spent three seasons there as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. ULM pitchers posted some of the best seasons in school history under Dax’s tutelage and four of his players were taken in the major league baseball draft.

2014 UCO Baseball Assistant Coaches Jeff Steele In his third year as Central Oklahoma’s associate head coach is Jeff Steele, who came to the Bronchos after a highly-successful six-year stint as pitching coach at NAIA powerhouse Lubbock Christian. Steele has helped lead UCO to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 2007-08, with the Bronchos finishing 31-17 in 2012 and 30-19 last spring. Jeff spent six years on the Lubbock Christian staff, with the Chaparrals going 290-76 while making four national tournament appearances -- including a runner-up finish in 2011 -- during that span. LCU’s pitching staff ranked in the top five nationally in strikeouts four times under Steele’s guidance and led the NAIA in 2011 with 487 stikeouts in 471 innings when the Chaparrals finished 50-14. A native of British Columbia, Canada, Steele was an All-Conference and All-Region pitcher at Collin County (Texas) Community College before playing his last two years at Oklahoma Baptist. He was an All-American for the Bison in 2004, posting a 10-1 record with a 3.14 earned run average in 97 innings. Steele started his coaching career as an assistant at Chattanooga State (Tenn.) Community College, helping the Tigers win 37 games while lowering their team ERA over two runs a game during his lone season there in 2005. He went to Lubbock Christian the following year and helped the Chaparrals produce five Major League Baseball draft selections as pitchers, with seven pitchers signing professional contracts. Steele also spent seven summers on the East Coast as a head coach in the Coastal Plains League (summer collegiate league), with more than 50 of his former CPL players having been drafted. Jeff is married (Jamie).

Cody Painter In his second year as a graduate assistant on the Central Oklahoma coaching staff is Cody Painter, who helped guide the Bronchos to a 30-19 record last year. Painter earned All-State honors as a senior at Oklahoma Christian Academy in Edmond before going to Clarendon (Texas) College. He redshirted his first year and then was named student assistant coach in 2010, working with the hitters and catchers while coaching first base for a team ranked as high as No. 15 in the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA). Cody went to Oklahoma State in 2011 and worked as a student manager for the Cowboys for two years before coming to UCO. He has spent five summers coaching high school prospect teams in Oklahoma, having had 22 players sign with Division I programs and five players taken in the Major League Baseball draft.

Caleb Bushyhead Serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Central Oklahoma baseball program in 2014 is former Division I standout Caleb Bushyhead. Bushyhead was a prep star at Mannford High School before going on to become a three-year starter at Oklahoma from 2010-12. He was a three-time Academic All-Big XII selection and helped lead the Sooners to the 2010 College World Series. Picked in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Los Angeles Angels, Bushyhead played one summer in the minor leagues before opting to began his coaching career. He was a graduate assistant at OU last spring, helping with event operations while also serving as the team’s radio color commentator.

Kevin Wagner In his third year helping the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant coach is Kevin Wagner, who serves as the director of baseball operations. Wagner has helped the Bronchos to an 85-59 record the past three years, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2012 and ‘13. A local product of Edmond Santa Fe High School, Wagner played for the Bronchos during the 2010 season. Kevin is completing work on his history education degree.

A

2014 Season Outlook Second Base

healthy blend of returning talent and experienced newcomers has Central Oklahoma ready to continue its climb back to national prominence in 2014. The Bronchos have four position starters and six pitchers back from last year’s 30-19 team, with several impact transfers expected to make a difference as UCO looks to contend for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title and a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. “We’re really excited about competing in the MIAA for the second year,” said head coach Dax Leone, who is 85-59 entering his fourth season at the helm. “Last year was a good experience and we learned a lot about the dynamics of how the conference works. This is one of the top baseball conferences in the country and we need to be more consistent, but we like our chances of being one of the top teams.” The Bronchos tied for third in the league last year and advanced to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament, with much more expected this spring. Seniors Mason Justice and Ethan Sharp lead what should be a deep pitching staff, with defense also expected to be a major strength of the team. “We need to be a lot better from a pitching prospective and consistently throw quality Ethan Sharp strikes,” Leone said. “This is a phase of the game we work a lot on and we need to be better. “We have definitely upgraded our defense all the way around and have some really good athletes in key spots. There are quite a few guys competing to be our every-day position guys and that competition is always a good thing.” Seniors Tyler Crabtree, Matt Johnson, Ross Rose and Cesar Wong are returning position starters and key offensive performers who should spark the Bronchos at the plate. “Offense should once again be our strength if we can cut down on our strikeouts,” Leone said. “We’re pretty solid on both sides of the plate and have created a lot of depth in our system here. “We want to play aggressive, push the issue and create mismatches in our favor. Overall, this may be our most balanced group from top to bottom with no automatic outs like we’ve had in the past.” Here’s a position-by-position look at the Bronchos:

Senior slugger Matt Johnson was the team’s top power hitter last year and will be in the starting lineup either here or at third base. He batted .315 with 20 doubles, 10 homers and 50 RBI last season and should be one of the top run-producers in the MIAA. Junior Josh Ingram could be here if Johnson goes to third and is coming off a 2013 season that saw him hit .325 with 57 RBI for a national championship team.

Shortstop

One of the best in the MIAA returns at this all-important position and senior Cesar Wong is ready for a big season. Wong hit a teamhigh .358 last year with eight doubles, five homers and 29 RBI as a key offensive force for the Bronchos while also showcasing superb defensive skills. He’ll get help from senior transfer Phillip Wilson, who also figures to be one of the team’s starting pitchers.

Third Base

The Bronchos have back their returning starter at the hot corner in senior Matt Johnson, though he may move to second. Ready to vie for the starting berth should Johnson make that move are junior college transfers Jared Sterling and Dylan Tinkler. Sterling hit .311 with 37 RBI for a national championship team last year, while Tinkler clubbed nine homers and batted .289.

Outfield

One full-time starter and three others who saw part-time starting duty are back in the outfield, with a pair of newcomers also in the mix. Senior Tyler Crabtree is a big-time offensive sparkplug and returns in left field as one of the best in the conference after hitting .348 with a remarkable .512 on-base percentage last season. Sophomore Dilon Argo started 16 games in center field a year ago and is set to take over a full-time role this spring when he should be much improved, with senior letterman Robbie Hoffman also available after hitting .317. Senior Wacey Henderson saw some starting time in right field last year while batting .306 and is battling with junior transfers Dylan Raper and Tyler Hatcher for the No. 1 spot there.

Pitcher

UCO has plenty of pitchers on the roster, including six who saw time on the mound last year. Senior Mason Justice is penciled in as the No. 1 starter after going 5-2 with a 4.73 earned run average last year when he came on strong down the stretch, with senior Landon Hallam another returner who figures to be one of the main starters. Senior Phillip Wilson is a Division I transfer ready to join the starting rotation along with junior college move-in Ricky Reeves, who went 6-3 with a 3.78 ERA last year. Seniors Joe Hollowell, Will Kilpatrick, Ethan Sharp and Kylar Trumbla are returning relievers, with Sharp expected to be the top closer after going 3-1 with five saves and a 3.41 ERA in 2013. Newcomers Andrew Davis, Tanner Ferrell, Caleb Lee, Dennis Morelli, Tyler Price, Jared Sterling and Zack Wunderlich should all contend for innings.

Catcher

A senior returner and Division I senior transfer will battle it out for the top spot behind the plate. Ryan Stoup hit .309 as a part-time starter for the Bronchos a year ago, while Brad Lamberti played 45 games at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Both are fully capable of handling the position and each will see action, particularly early in the season. Junior Greg Husander is also available.

First Base

UCO has back a returning starter in senior Ross Rose, who had a .286 average with nine doubles, four home runs and 30 runs batted in last spring. He’s the front-runner to retain his slot in the lineup, though junior transfer Jake O’Brien will push for playing time after hitting .304 with 34 RBI for a junior college World Series team in 2013.

Designated Hitter

The Bronchos have plenty of options here depending on what happens at other positions, but senior Wacey Henderson and junior transfers Ethan Elroy and Tyler Hatcher appear to be the main contenders. 6

2014 UCO Baseball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. All four schools began competing as full-time members in 2012-13. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left the conference with 14 schools.
