School Nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

2014 UCO Softball Interim Head Coach Cody guided the Edmond Stars American Legion baseball team to the state tournament in his one year as head coach and he helped lead the Edmond Memorial American Legion team to a pair of state runner-up finishes during two years as an assistant. A product of Edmond Santa Fe High School, White played baseball at North Central Texas College for one year before spending his final three seasons at Southern Nazarene. He was a two-time Sooner Athletic Conference Gold Glove Catcher for the Crimson Storm in addition to earning All-SAC honors. White took over as interim head coach in August after serving as UCO’s first-ever full-time assistant coach in 2012-13. He played a key role in a sensational 2013 season that saw the Bronchos win a school-record 51 games en route to capturing the school’s first women’s national title in any sport. UCO claimed the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association crown in its first year in the league and went a perfect 9-0 in NCAA post-season play to take the national championship, clipping Kutztown 5-2 in extra innings in a thrilling finals contest to end a 51-11 campaign. Cody and head coach Genny Stidham were selected as the Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association after the season. White was named interim head coach on Aug. 9 after Stidham left to take over the head coaching position at Texas Woman’s. White came to UCO after serving as assistant baseball and softball coach at Edmond Memorial High School. He was on the baseball staff for four years, helping the Bulldogs reach the state tournament in 2010, and coached softball for three years.

2014 UCO Softball 2014 Season Outlook

A

veteran team with plenty of returning talent is armed and ready to make a spirited run at another national championship in 2014. Central Oklahoma returns 12 players -- including seven with extensive starting experience and its top two pitchers -- from last year’s record-setting 51-11 squad that captured the NCAA Division II national title and there’s little doubt the Bronchos will be favored to retain that crown. “Our girls know that as defending national champions we’ll have a target on our back, so we have to be ready to play each and every game,” interim head coach Cody White said. “We bring back a lot of players and we want to use our experience from last year to make us better this season.” UCO’s large group of returners will make that tough task easier, with pitcher Kalynn Schrock leading the charge after a dominating post-season run that saw her go the distance and win all nine national tournament games a year ago. The Bronchos also have back their entire starting outfield in Kaylee Brunson, Devyn Frazier and Brooke Zukerman and their middle defense in shortstop Hannah Justus, second baseman Ally Dziadula and catcher Tori Collet. Sam Cool saw extensive starting duty at various positions last year and Amanda McClelland has 42 career wins in the circle. “We did lose power in the middle of the lineup, but we’re looking for several players to fill those spots,” White said. “We have our entire pitching staff back and they’re looking stronger this year. The key for us is staying healthy as a pitching staff and to manufacture runs using our speed. “We have a chance to be really good again and we’re looking forward to the challenge that’s ahead of us.” Here’s a look at the 2014 Bronchos:

Second Base

Do-everything sophomore Ally Dziadula was sensational after taking over here last year in batting .355 to earn first-team All-MIAA and second-team All-Central Region honors and will once again be a key offensive force. Sophomore Haley Weathers provides depth.

Shortstop

UCO has the luxury of putting a fourth-year starter at this important position in senior Hannah Justus, a defensive whiz who has been the leader of the infield throughout her career. Sophomore Ally Dziadula can help if needed.

Third Base

One of the few spots with no set starter as sophomores Sam Cool and Ashton Smith vie for the top spot. Cool hit .289 with 28 RBI while starting in several different positions last year and Smith batted .429 in limited action, with both capable of taking over the position. Junior transfer Joely Rogers and freshman Jill Shipman add quality depth.

Outfield

The Bronchos return all three main starters, with juniors Kaylee Brunson and Devyn Frazier back for the third straight year. Brunson returns to center field after hitting .405 with 31 stolen bases to earn second-team All-MIAA honors, while Frazier had a .290 average with 17 steals and is back in left field. Sophomore Brooke Zukerman started 37 games in right field and looks to stay there after batting .268 with seven home runs and 29 RBI. Sophomore Sam Cool could also see time in right.

Kalynn Schrock

Catcher

A major strength of UCO’s with the presence of senior veterans Kalynn Schrock and Amanda McClelland. Schrock won a school- and MIAA-record 34 games last year in going 34-6 with 312 strikeouts and a 1.69 earned run average. She’s the team ace, but McClelland went 11-2 last year, has 42 career wins to her credit and will see plenty of time in the circle. Sophomore letterwinner Nicole Brady figures to see more action and junior Joely Rogers can also help.

The Bronchos are in great shape here with the return of sophomore starter Tori Collet, who went the distance in every game during a fantastic rookie campaign while batting .294 with 31 RBI. Newcomers Taylor Factor and Ashleigh Tramel provide back-up help.

First Base

UCO will break in a new starter here, with freshman Lindsay Littles and junior transfer Emily Ditmore battling for the starting job. Both have the ability to become key run-producers for the Bronchos, who could also use senior Kalynn Schrock here when she’s not pitching.

2014 UCO Softball NCAA Division II National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament seven times since joining the organization in 1989-90, including three of the last five years. All seven appearances have come since 2002 and the Bronchos have an all-time record of 24-14 in national tournament games. UCO has made three NCAA Division II Championship Finals appearances after winning regional championships in 2006, ‘12 and ‘13. The Bronchos went on to capture the first women’s national championship in school history last year to cap a perfect 9-0 post-season run. A year-by-year look at UCO in the Division II national tournament:

2002

2012

UCO qualified for its first-ever Division II national tournament, going to San Antonio, Texas for the South Central Regional. The Bronchos beat Colorado Mesa 3-2 in the first round before being eliminated with back-to-back losses to Texas A&M-Kingsville (1-0 and 4-0).

UCO capped a record-setting season with a second trip to the World Series. The Bronchos hosted the South Central Regional I Tournament, beating Incarnate Word (3-1) and Emporia State (2-1) before the Hornets forced an “if necessary” game with a 2-0 win. UCO scored three seventh-inning runs to top ESU 8-6 in the finals and advance to San Angelo, Texas for the Super Regional. The Bronchos trimmed Angelo State 1-0 in the opener of that best-of-three series, but the Rambelles squared it with a 12-3 rout. UCO rebounded with an 11-3 romp to capture the regional title. 2014 UCO Softball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left the conference with 14 schools.
