School Nickname

Basketball History

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Coaches Outlook/Players

2012-13 UCO Basketball Head Coach Guy Hardaker

while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993. Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS. Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level. He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

In his seventh year as Central Oklahoma’s head coach is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender. A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a highly-successful stint as boys high school basketball coach and is 126-55 in six years with the Bronchos. He’s led UCO to its first four Division II national tournament appearances -- including a pair of Sweet 16 berths -- and the Bronchos won 20-plus games a school-record four consecutive seasons from 2007-11. Guy guided Central to a top-two finish in the Lone Star Conference North Division the last five years (two firsts, three seconds) the Bronchos were in the league and he had 10 players earn first- or second-team AllLSC North Division honors, including two Player of the Year selections. UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runnerup in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and really took off the next season. The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth. UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history. The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year. UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finishing a best-ever 27-6. Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 2009-10, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round. Guy got UCO back in the national tournament in 2010-11 with a team that featured just one senior and lost six players to season-ending injury, using a stirring late-season run to make the second Sweet 16. The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO’s inspired run ended there to finish a 22-10 campaign. Central competed as a Division II independent last year while making the transition from the LSC to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and went 16-10 despite playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 198793. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf

2012-13 UCO Basketball

2011-12 Review

2012-13 UCO Basketball 2011-12 Season Review Central Oklahoma got off to a quick start and finished with its sixth straight winning season in 2011-12 despite playing as an NCAA Division II independent. The Bronchos played at home just eight times and were on the road for nine consecutive games during one stretch, but still managed a 16-10 record with four losses by five points or less. UCO started the season 5-0 and never lost more than two straight games. Here’s a game-by-game look at UCO’s 2011-12 season:

No. 20-ranked Bronchos went on to roll over Ouachita Baptist 76-58 on the first day of the UAM Hampton Inn Classic. UCO dominated on the boards, owning a huge 57-30 rebounding advantage to overcome 26 turnovers and 36.5-percent shooting from the field.

Arkansas-Monticello 72 , UCO 57

MONTICELLO, Ark. (Nov. 26) – Arkansas-Monticello used a late first-half run to open up a nine-point halftime lead and went on to upend No. 20-ranked Central Oklahoma 72-57 on the second day of the UAM Hampton Inn Classic. The host Cotton Blossoms outscored UCO 9-1 the final 1:43 of the half to take a 35-26 lead into intermission and the Bronchos never got closer.

UCO 61, Texas-Permian Basin 55

UCO 94, Science & Arts of Oklahoma 61

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Nov. 11) -- Heather Davis scored a team-high 14 points and made three crucial free throws down the stretch as Central Oklahoma held off Texas-Permian Basin 61-55 on the first day of UAFS Lady Lion Classic. The Bronchos led just 52-51 with three minutes remaining in the season-opener before making 9-of-12 free throws the rest of the way to seal the win, with Davis hitting 3-of-4 in the final 20 seconds to keep UCO safely in front.

EDMOND (Nov. 29) -- Eight different players made at least one 3-pointer to highlight an impressive outside assault as Central Oklahoma bombarded Science and Arts of Oklahoma 94-61. The Bronchos made 15 treys to tie single-game school record, shooting 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from beyond the arc and 55.0 percent (33-of-60) overall.

Southwestern Oklahoma 80, UCO 73

UCO 76, Arkansas-Fort Smith 73 (OT)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Dec. 6) – Turnover-prone Central Oklahoma couldn’t overcome its own miscues in a mistake-filled second half and dropped an 80-73 decision to Southwestern Oklahoma. The Bronchos were poised to take control after opening up a 10-point lead early in the second half, but instead starting making repeated turnovers and the Bulldogs took advantage.

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Nov. 12) – Britney Morgan made two clinching free throws with three seconds left in overtime to cap a career-high 22-point outing that lifted Central Oklahoma past host Arkansas-Fort Smith 76-73 on the final day of the UAFS Lady Lion Classic. The Lady Lions forced the extra session on a steal and layup with nine seconds left in regulation and OT was tied three times before UCO went ahead to stay 71-68 on two Kasey Tweed free throws with 1:53 left. UAFS got within 74-73 with three seconds remaining and immediately fouled Morgan on the inbounds, but the sophomore guard calmly swished both foul shots to seal the verdict.

UCO 73, Southeastern Oklahoma 69

EDMOND (Dec. 10) – Paiten Taylor scored a career-high 20 points and Central Oklahoma built a big second-half lead before holding off Southeastern Oklahoma down the stretch to claim a 73-69 victory. The Bronchos saw a 19-point lead whittled to one at 70-69 with 1:27 left to play before Taylor came through with the biggest bucket of the day. The freshman forward made a short inside jumper in traffic and was fouled at the 1:14 mark, adding the free throw to give UCO a four-point lead.

UCO 97, Southwestern Oklahoma 89

EDMOND (Nov. 15) -- Rachel New’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer capped a 17-4 first-half run that gave Central Oklahoma a double-digit lead and the Bronchos went on to topple Southwestern Oklahoma 97-89 at Hamilton Field House. New’s 35-foot rainbow found nothing but net as the horn sounded to give UCO a 53-41 halftime advantage after it trailed 37-36 with five minutes left. The Bronchos led by as many as 20 in the second half and then turned back a mild SWOSU uprising before closing out their 10th straight win over the Bulldogs.

Western Washington 69, UCO 53

UCO 97, Southern Arkansas 46

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 15) – Two plays during a 20-second span early in the game put Central Oklahoma in a quick bind and the Bronchos never recovered in falling to Western Washington 69-53 on the first day of the Great Western Shootout. Top 3-point shooting threat Jill Bryan was forced to the bench after drawing her second foul at the 16:23 mark and 19 seconds later UCO lost freshman sensation and leading scorer Paiten Taylor to a season-ending knee injury. The taller, more physical Vikings dominated the boards the rest of the way and used a 15-5 run to end the half to take the lead for good.

UCO 121, Oklahoma Panhandle 75

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 16) – Britney Morgan hit two clutch 3-pointers down the stretch and Central Oklahoma turned back Central Washington 77-66 on the second day of the Great Western Shootout. Both Morgan treys were corner shots, the first one coming with 2:20 remaining to give the Bronchos a 70-60 lead and the second one at the 1:42 mark after a CWU miss that made it 73-60 and sealed the win.

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 18) – A rash of first-half turnovers slowed Central Oklahoma but didn’t come close to preventing the Bronchos from staying unbeaten on the first day of the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere. UCO bolted to an early 12-0 lead, built a 41-22 halftime cushion despite committing 20 turnovers and went on to a 97-46 drubbing of Southern Arkansas. The Bronchos finished with 27 turnovers, but shot a sizzling 55.7 percent (34of-61) for the game, including 61.8 percent (21-of-34) in the final 20 minutes.

UCO 77, Central Washington 66

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 19) – Savannah Hamilton keyed a late first-half surge that put Central Oklahoma in control and the unbeaten Bronchos (5-0) went on to a record-setting 121-75 trouncing of Oklahoma Panhandle on the second day of the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere. UCO led just 27-22 with 6:19 left in the half, but Hamilton had 13 points the rest of the way – making four straight fast-break layups during one stretch – as the Bronchos closed with a 25-13 run to take a 52-35 cushion into the break. UCO ended up setting single-game school records for points, field goals made (52), field goals attempted (95) and rebounds (68).

St. Mary’s 65, UCO 62

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Dec. 30) -- Two miscues in the final 28 seconds turned the tide and enabled St. Mary’s to knock off Central Oklahoma 65-62 on the first day of the St. Mary’s Classic. The Bronchos were nursing a 62-61 lead in the final 30 seconds when the Rattlers picked off an errant pass and went in for the go-ahead layup at 0:25. UCO threw the ball away again on its next possession and SMU made two free throws with 7.1 ticks remaining to take the three-point lead that held up when Heather Davis’ tying 3-point try at the buzzer bounced off the front rim.

Pittsburg State, 76, UCO 71

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Nov. 22) – A Pittsburg State hot streak followed by a Central Oklahoma cold spell proved too much for the Bronchos to overcome. The Gorillas made 10 straight shots during one stretch and UCO missed 12 in a row during another as PSU turned a 10-point second-half deficit into a ninepoint lead en route to handing the Bronchos a 76-71 setback.

UCO 78, Incarnate Word 66

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Dec. 31) -- Courtney Harper and Heather Davis combined for 40 points to spark Central Oklahoma to a wire-to-wire 78-66 triumph over Incarnate Word on the final day of the St. Mary’s Classic. Harper scored 17 of her career-high 22 points in the second half and Davis had 11 of her 18 in the opening 20 minutes to pace the Bronchos.

UCO 76, Ouachita Baptist 58

MONTICELLO, Ark. (Nov. 25) -- Paiten Taylor scored nine of her 17 points during a 17-1 second-half run that put Central Oklahoma in command and the

16

2012-13 UCO Basketball 2011-12 Season Review percent (5-of-27) from long range entering the contest – put the Bronchos on top with a long trey from the top of the circle at the 1:35 mark. NSU missed its next two shots and UCO put the game away with a driving layup from Chelsea Robinson and two more Davis free throws.

Midwestern State 61, UCO 60

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Jan. 4) -- Another rash of late turnovers resulted in another last-second loss as Central Oklahoma fell to Midwestern State 61-60. The Bronchos overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to take their first lead of the game at 60-58 on two Heather Davis free throws with 1:19 left to play, but UCO turned the ball over four times the rest of the way as the Mustangs rallied.

UCO 93, Newman 86

EDMOND (Feb. 4) – Paige Locke has seen limited playing time during her two-year career at Central Oklahoma, but the junior guard was ready when the Bronchos needed her the most. Locke drilled a clutch 3-pointer with 2:07 left to play to ignite a game-ending 19-8 run that lifted UCO to its second straight home upset, this one a 93-86 victory over No. 23-ranked Newman in a physical contest that saw 57 fouls called. The Jets had turned a 54-37 deficit into a 78-74 lead when Locke drained her trey from the corner to give the Bronchos the spark they needed. UCO went ahead to stay at 84-81 on Jill Bryan’s conventional three-point play with 1:06 remaining and then iced it at the foul line, hitting 9-of-10 free throws the rest of the way.

Northeastern State 59, UCO 40

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Jan. 12) – Sixteen consecutive missed shots turned a four-point first-half lead into a 13-point deficit and Central Oklahoma went on to drop a 59-40 decision to No. 12-ranked Northeastern State. The cold-shooting Bronchos led 11-7 just over seven minutes into the game, but didn’t score again until 19 seconds remained in the first half to get within 26-13 at intermission and UCO never got closer than that the rest of the way.

UCO 82, Lindenwood 74

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Jan. 19) -- Jill Bryan overcame a forgetful first-half performance with a spectacular second-half showing to spark Central Oklahoma to an 82-74 victory over Lindenwood. Bryan had three turnovers and missed her only shot in the first 20 minutes before rebounding to score 19 second-half points, hitting two of UCO’s four straight 3-pointers during a game-deciding 16-0 run that put the Bronchos in control.

Northeastern State 70, UCO 57

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Feb. 11) – An early-game scoring drought put Central Oklahoma in a hole and the Bronchos never recovering in falling to No. 14-ranked Northeastern State 70-57.

UCO 78, Lindenwood 57

EDMOND (Feb. 16) -- Five players scored in double figures and Central Oklahoma rode its defense to a 78-57 drubbing of Lindenwood. The Bronchos had 15 steals while forcing 33 turnovers and limited the Lions to 28.3-percent shooting from the field in staying perfect (6-0) at home and improving to 15-9 on the season in the opener of a season-ending three-game homestand.

UCO 90, McKendree 63

LEBANON, Ill. (Jan. 21) – A dominating inside attack paved the way for Central Oklahoma’s 90-63 drubbing of McKendree, but it came with a price. The injury-ravaged Bronchos suffered yet another setback late in the first half when sophomore point guard Britney Morgan went down with a torn ACL, making her the seventh player to be lost to injury this season. Savannah Hamilton (25 points) and Courtney Harper (21) keyed Saturday’s rout, combining to make 19-of-25 shots and score 46 points.

UCO 83, McKendree 68

EDMOND (Feb. 18) – Savannah Hamilton scored seven of her career-high 30 points during a 12-0 second-half run that put Central Oklahoma back in control and the Bronchos went on to throttle McKendree 83-68. UCO led by as many as eight in the first half before the Bearcats rallied to go in front 47-44 early in the second half. The Bronchos regained the lead and were up 53-52 when Hamilton caught fire. The junior guard had seven of UCO’s 12 points during a three-minute scoring spurt that extended the lead to 13 (65-52) with 11:59 left to play and McKendree got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Arkansas-Fort Smith 83, UCO 69

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Jan. 25) – A seven-minute shooting slump and too many turnovers proved insurmountable for Central Oklahoma to overcome as the Bronchos fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith 83-69. UCO led 25-20 with 5:24 left in the opening half, but made just two of their next 11 shots and turned the ball over five times in falling behind 44-28 with 18:37 left in the game.

Northeastern State 68, UCO 64

UCO 77, Northeastern State 71 (OT)

EDMOND (Feb. 22) -- A spirited last-ditch rally fell short and Central Oklahoma ended the season with a tough 68-64 loss to No. 9-ranked Northeastern State. The Bronchos trailed by 63-51 with just 3:46 left to play before using a 9-0 run to trim that 12-point deficit to 63-60 with 1:12 remaining, but the RiverHawks held on to win for the third time in four meetings between the two rivals this season. UCO, which lost seven players to season-ending injury during the year, finished 16-10.

EDMOND (Jan. 28) – Courtney Harper isn’t exactly known for her 3-point prowess, but the junior forward stepped up and hit a big one in the clutch to highlight an overtime scoring spurt that lifted Central Oklahoma to a stunning 77-71 upset of No. 6-ranked Northeastern State. The Bronchos trailed 69-65 two minutes into the extra session before two Heather Davis free throws ignited an 11-0 run that put UCO in command. Autumn Huffman’s follow shot tied it and then Harper – shooting just 18.5

National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II. The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II. UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80. The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament. UCO captured the Region IV Tournament crown with wins over Texas Christian (86-71), Ouchita Baptist (79-73) and Centenary (79-72) and then defeated Hofstra, 73-66, to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Francis-Marion, 91-87. UCO didn’t return to national tournament play again until 2007-08,

when the Bronchos earned their first NCAA Division II playoff bid with an at-large berth into the South Central Regional. Coach Guy Hardaker’s crew knocked off St. Mary’s 75-73 in overtime in the first round before being eliminated by Washburn, 73-66. UCO went back to the Division II national tournament in 2008-09, advancing to the Sweet 16 in making the South Central Regional finals. The Bronchos opened with a 68-66 overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma and then got past Washburn 72-63 in the semifinals before falling to host West Texas A&M 65-52 in the regional championship. UCO made it back to the playoffs again in 2009-10, but fell to Northeastern State in the first round, 54-52. The Bronchos qualified for the fourth straight time in 2010-11 and advanced to the Sweet 16 with back-to-back upsets, knocking off Washburn 65-64 and host Northeastern State 68-60 before falling in the regional finals to Northwest Missouri, 82-70. 26

2012-13 UCO Basketball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its first year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.
