School Nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma.

2013-14 UCO Basketball

Coaches Outlook/Players

2013-14 UCO Basketball Head Coach Guy Hardaker

Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993. Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS. Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level. He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

In his eighth year as Central Oklahoma’s head coach is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender. A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a highly-successful stint as boys high school basketball coach and is 135-72 in seven years with the Bronchos. He’s led UCO to its first four Division II national tournament appearances -- including a pair of Sweet 16 berths -- and the Bronchos won 20-plus games a school-record four consecutive seasons from 2007-11. Guy guided Central to two titles and three runner-up finishes in the Lone Star Conference North Division the last five years the Bronchos were in the league and he’s had 10 players earn first- or second-team all-conference honors, including two Player of the Year selections. UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runnerup in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and really took off the next season. The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth. UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history. The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year. UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finishing a best-ever 27-6. Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 2009-10, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round. Guy got UCO back in the national tournament in 2010-11 with a team that lost six players to season-ending injury using a stirring post-season run to advance to the Sweet 16. The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO’s inspired run ended there to finish a 22-10 campaign. Central competed as a Division II independent in 2012-13 and went 16-10 while playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. The Bronchos got off to a solid start in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association last season before being plagued by a couple of key injuries and ended up finishing 9-17.

The Bronchos were a school-record 27-6 in Shaw’s first year in 2008-09 and followed with 22-8 and 22-10 seasons the next two years, qualifying for the national tournament all three years and advancing to the Sweet 16 in ‘09 and ‘11. Davis played her first two years at Division I Missouri-Kansas City, averaging 4.9 points a game as a freshman and 2.2 points as a sophomore while earning Academic All-Summit League recognition. She came to UCO in 2010-11 and averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds a contest while starting in six of 32 games to help lead the Bronchos to a 22-10 record and Sweet 16 berth in the national tournament. Season Outlook

ebounding is the key word for Central Oklahoma in 2013-14 and in more ways than one. Literally, the Bronchos need to be better on the boards after getting outrebounded by nearly seven a game last season. And figuratively, UCO is looking to bounce back from a 9-17 campaign that ended a string of six straight winning seasons. “Our theme is rebound,” eighth-year head coach Guy Hardaker said. “We want to not only be a great rebounding team, but we want to rebound from last season. “This team will be fun to watch. They play hard and fast and they’re determined to bounce back from last season.” The Bronchos return nine players from last year, including two full-time starters and two others who started at least seven games. Mix in several newcomers expected to make a huge impact and it’s clear that UCO is ready to make a big jump in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. “We’ve got a good mix of returning and new players and they have blended well together,” said Hardaker, who is 135-72 and has guided the Bronchos to four Division II national tournament appearances. “We have a lot of interchangeable parts and the strength of our team will be our speed and overall size.” Leading UCO’s quest for success will be senior leaders Jill Bryan and Britney Morgan, who have combined for 125 career starts. Bryan has been a full-time starter the past two years and is one of the top long-range shooting threats in the league. She’s the leading returning scorer from last season after averaging 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds a game with a team-high 40 3-pointers. Morgan has started in every game (77) she’s played at UCO and will be the main quarterback in steering what should be a high-octane offensive attack. Morgan averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds a contest last year and has 114 career 3-pointers to her credit. Five other letterwinners return from last year in senior Rachel New, junior Chelsea Robinson and sophomores Hayley Bryan, Whitney Dunn and Jordan Ward.

New averaged 3.8 points and 1.4 assists a game while making 10 starts a year ago and Dunn started seven times as a rookie, netting 5.5 points and 2.4 rebounds an outing on team-best 48.0 percent shooting from the field. Bryan battled injury woes that limited her to 14 games in 2012-13, averaging 4.5 points and 2.4 rebounds a game. Ward, the fastest player on the team, added 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds a contest. Bryan is expected to battle for a starting berth in the post this winter while the other three returners will all see valuable minutes. UCO also has back junior Tarrington Oakes and sophomore Haley Weathers. Oakes has missed the last two years to injury, but is looking to make an impact in her return to the court. Weathers was a part-time starter in 2011-12 at league rival Missouri Southern before redshirting last year after transferring and the Bronchos are looking for big things from her. Six newcomers join the roster this year, spearheaded by a pair of Division I transfers who figure to play prominent roles. Sophomore Julia Mason came to UCO from Central Arkansas and is a multi-talented post player ready to move into the starting lineup, while junior Amber Makeever is a Colorado State transfer who will also push for a spot in the top five. Also new to the team are freshmen Marley Anderson, Brittany Lancaster and Olivia Mason and junior college move-in Krystal Fowler. All four are looking to earn playing time, with Mason capable of taking over a starting role. Juniors Chelsi Dennis and Kylie Mayes will both sit out Jill Bryan the season. “Our players need to have a good understanding of their individual roles,” Hardaker said. “We have to have confidence to make plays and learn to win the last two minutes of ball games.” The Bronchos are also looking to benefit from having gone through a season of MIAA play, which features a host of teams that will vie for national tournament berths. “We learned we have to be consistent for 40 minutes,” Hardaker said. “It’s a war of attrition and only the strong and healthy will survive in this conference. Our mental approach and toughness will help us win the close games.” 6

2013-14 UCO Basketball

2012-13 Review

2013-14 UCO Basketball 2012-13 Season Review Central Oklahoma got off to a fast start in 2012-13 before injury problems and a series of tough losses led to the first losing season in seven years as the Bronchos finished 9-17 in their first year in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. UCO won six straight games in getting off to an 8-2 start that included a 1-1 record in league play, but the Bronchos lost their next 10 games and finished 2-16 in the MIAA. Seven of those league losses were by four points or less. Here’s a game-by-game look at UCO’s 2012-13 season: The lead grew to 18 (44-26) by intermission and UCO was up by as many as 30 in the second half before coasting in to prevail in the first meeting between the two teams since Jan. 20, 1987. Ten players scored in a balanced attack that saw the Bronchos get 34 points from their bench, with Morgan’s 15 points leading five double figure scorers. Savannah Hamilton hit four 3-pointers in a 14-point outing and Jill Bryan had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Dennis and McKenzie Solberg each had 10 off the bench.

Minnesota-Duluth 64, UCO 44

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Nov. 10) – Central Oklahoma didn’t do much right in its 2012-13 season opener in falling to Minnesota-Duluth 64-44 on the first day of the St. Mary’s Classic. UCO hit just 16-of-55 shots, including only 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from 3-point range. Alyssa Fuxa was the only player to score more than six points for the Bronchos, hitting 7-of-13 shots with a 3-pointer in a game-high 17 point outing in addition to blocking four shots.

UCO 73, Oklahoma Baptist 58

EDMOND (Dec. 1) – A second-half 3-point barrage broke the game open for Central Oklahoma and the Bronchos went on to cruise past Oklahoma Baptist 73-58 in their home opener at Hamilton Field House. UCO drained five long-distance daggers in less than five minutes during a 23-7 run midway through the second half to turn a six-point lead into a 22-point cushion and Guy Hardaker’s crew coasted in from there. It was the fifth straight win after a season-opening loss for the Bronchos (5-1) and ended a six-game winning streak by the Lady Bison (6-2). UCO entered the game shooting just 29.5 percent from long range, but nailed 7-of-12 second-half attempts in finishing 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) for the game. National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II. The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II. UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80. The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament. 2013-14 UCO Basketball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left the conference with 14 schools. Truman will remain an MIAA associate member in wrestling, with Newman joining the MIAA in that capacity.
