School Nickname
“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

2011-12 UCO Basketball
Coaches Outlook/Players
2011-12 UCO Basketball Head Coach Guy Hardaker
before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO’s inspired run ended there to finish a 22-10 campaign. Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993. Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS. Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level. He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).
In his sixth year as Central Oklahoma’s head coach is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender. A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a long stint as a high school boys basketball coach and is 110-45 in five years with the Bronchos. He’s led UCO to four straight Division II national tournament appearances and a school-record four consecutive 20-win seasons. Hardaker’s Bronchos were first (twice) or second (three times) in the Lone Star Conference North Division the previous five years while also finishing runner-up in the LSC Tournament three times. UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runner-up in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and then really took off the next season. The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth. UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history. The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year. UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finishing a best-ever 27-6. Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 200910, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round. Guy’s best coaching performance came last year when a team featuring just one senior and missing six players who suffered season-ending injuries used a stirring late-season run to make the second Sweet 16 appearance in school history. The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals

Assistant Coach Bill Shaw In his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant coach is Bill Shaw who has helped lead the Bronchos to three consecutive national tournament appearances. Shaw has played a big role the past three years as UCO has gone 71-24, following up a school-record 27-6 campaign in 2008-09 with a 22-8 and 22-10 seasons the last two years. The Bronchos have made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II national tournament twice in that span, in 2009 and ‘11. Bill was an assistant boys basketball coach at Santa Fe High School from 1999-07, serving all but one of those seasons as Guy Hardaker’s top aide. He helped lead the Wolves to four straight regional championships and three Class 6A state tournament appearances, with the 2004-05 team winning the state title. Shaw also coached the boys tennis team from 2002-07, taking SFHS to the state tournament every season and placing as high as third. A 1982 graduate of Oklahoma State, Shaw was co-owner of a restaurant in Enid until going to Santa Fe as a teacher/ coach in 1997 and was in private business for one year before coming to UCO. Bill is married (Patricia) and has two children (Andy and Hayden).
Student Assistant Ashley Beckley
Student Assistant Krista Rice
Serving as a student assistant coach this year is former Central Oklahoma standout Ashley Beckley, who ended her career last season as one of the school’s all-time best players. Beckley was a three-year starter for the Bronchos, earning second-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division honors as a sophomore before claiming first-team accolades her last two years. She was the LSC North Division Player of the Year and a third-team All-American last season after averaging a league-high 19.5 points and 8.6 rebounds a game in leading UCO to a 22-10 record and the Sweet 16. Beckley set school records for points (623), free throws made (199) and free throws attempted (261) last year. She holds UCO career records for free throws made (479) and attempted (698) while ranking in the top four in four other categories -- points (2nd, 1,627), field goals made (2nd, 573), field goals attempted (2nd, 1,175) and rebounds (4th, 676).
Helping the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant for the fifth consecutive year is Krista Rice. Rice has helped lead the Bronchos to an 8835 record the past four years, with UCO having won two Lone Star Conference North Division titles and made four consecutive NCAA Division II national tournament appearances. Rice was a member of the Edmond Santa Fe basketball team that finished as state runner-up in 2006 and she joined head coach Guy Hardaker’s staff at UCO the following year. Krista is a physical education/health major.

2010-11 Review
2011-12 UCO Basketball 2010-11 Season Review A second-half surge led to a fourth straight national tournament appearance for Central Oklahoma, with the Bronchos making it all the way to the South Central Regional finals for their second Sweet 16 showing in three years. The Bronchos were 6-5 at one point in the season before a seven-game winning streak ignited the late surge that led to a 22-10 finish. UCO ended its association with the Lone Star Conference by finishing second in the LSC North Division and followed with a runner-up showing in the LSC Tournament, losing a 74-73 finals decision to Texas Woman’s. Central went to the national tournament as the fifth seed in the eightteam South Central Regional, but knocked off No. 4 seed Washburn and top-seeded Northeastern State to make the finals before falling to Northwest Missouri. Here’s a game-by-game look at UCO’s 2010-11 season:
The junior guard hit 5-of-7 attempts from beyond the 3-point line in scoring all 15 of her points and the Bronchos made 11 treys overall to break a two-game losing streak in resounding fashion.
Arkansas-Fort Smith 80, UCO 71 EDMOND (Dec. 30) -- A frantic last-minute rally wasn’t enough to offset a nearly eight-minute dry spell that put Central Oklahoma in a big hole as the Bronchos dropped an 80-71 decision to Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Tarleton State 86, UCO 74 EDMOND (Jan. 6) -- An early second-half surge turned a slim Central Oklahoma lead into an eight-point Tarleton State advantage and the Bronchos never recovered in dropping an 86-74 decision.

National Tournament History Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II. The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II. UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80. The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament. UCO captured the Region IV Tournament crown with wins over Texas Christian (86-71), Ouchita Baptist (79-73) and Centenary (79-72) and then defeated Hofstra, 73-66, to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Francis-Marion, 91-87. UCO didn’t return to national tournament play again until 2007-08,
when the Bronchos earned their first NCAA Division II playoff bid with an at-large berth into the South Central Regional. Coach Guy Hardaker’s crew knocked off St. Mary’s 75-73 in overtime in the first round before being eliminated by Washburn, 73-66. UCO went back to the Division II national tournament in 2008-09, advancing to the Sweet 16 in making the South Central Regional finals. The Bronchos opened with a 68-66 overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma and then got past Washburn 72-63 in the semifinals before falling to host West Texas A&M 65-52 in the regional championship. UCO made it back to the playoffs again in 2009-10, but fell to Northeastern State in the first round, 54-52. The Bronchos qualified for the fourth straight time last year and advanced to the Sweet 16 with back-to-back upsets, knocking off Washburn 65-64 and host Northeastern State 68-60 before falling in the regional finals to Northwest Missouri, 82-70. 26

2011-12 UCO Basketball The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma will compete as an NCAA Division II independent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocition in 2012-13. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri
State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. With the departure of Nebraska-Omaha in 2011, the current membership of the MIAA is at 15 schools. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska Kearney and Northeastern State will begin league play in 2012-13.
