School Nickname

“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school. Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization.

2013-14 UCO Wrestling

Coaches

2013-14 UCO Wrestling Head Coach and another sixth-place national showing in 2008-09. The Bronchos went 8-5 in duals and finished 15th nationally in 2009-10 and were 13th the following season after going 15-4 in duals. UCO had another young squad in 2011-12, but still managed a 9-5 dual record and then won its first regional crown since 2008 before tying for 10th in the national tournament with three All-Americans. The Bronchos had their best season since 2007 last year, going 13-1 in duals en route to a fourth-place national finish. UCO captured the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual title, was runnerup in the MIAA and Super Regional Two tournaments and had six AllAmericans, including one champion. James graduated UCO with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1980 and spent one year as a graduate assistant with the Bronchos. David then served as an assistant coach at Edmond Memorial High School for one year before becoming UCO’s ninth head coach in 1982. James ranks 13th on the school’s career win list with a 116-16 record. The Del City native was UCO’s first four-time All-American from 197680, finishing third as a freshman and second as a sophomore before winning back-to-back NAIA national titles his final two seasons. He is a member of five hall of fames -- the NAIA Hall of Fame (1988), the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame (1991), the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame (2005), the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2007) and the Del City High School Hall of Fame (2008). David is married (Cherrie) and has two daughters (Hayden and Ryann).

David James The dean of Central Oklahoma’s coaching staff is David James, now in his 32nd year atop the perennial powerhouse wrestling program and one of the premier coaches at any level of collegiate athletics. James, a four-time All-American and two-time national champion as a wrestler at UCO, ranks second among all college coaches at any level in national championships with 12 -- seven in NCAA Division II, five in NAIA -- and has been named national Coach of the

Year seven times. David has piled up an amazing 363-126-5 dual record against some of the top teams in the country, ranking fifth in NCAA Division II and 35th on all levels of college wrestling in career dual wins. UCO has had 24 top-four national tournament finishes under James, including five runner-up showings, and the Bronchos have won 19 Division II regional titles in 24 tries. D.J. has coached 46 national champions and 178 All-Americans at UCO and his career dual record includes an amazing 307-50-1 mark against non-Division I teams. James took control of the UCO program in 1982 and led the team to a fifth-place NAIA finish and 7-6 dual record that first year. The Bronchos asserted themselves the next year with a 11-5-1 dual finish and the first of four straight NAIA championships, winning by a 33-point margin. UCO romped to the national title by 53 3/4 points in 1985, and made it three straight in 1986 with a narrow 7 1/4-point victory. The Bronchos made it four in a row in 1987 following a 12-5 dual season. The championship streak ended in 1988 with a narrow runner-up finish, but James took UCO back to the top in its final year with the NAIA in 1989 with a 13-point margin of victory. The Bronchos made the move up to NCAA Division II the next season and were runners-up in both 1990 and ‘91. The breakthrough season came in 1992 when UCO went 14-1 in duals and captured its first-ever Division II championship. The Bronchos won a second consecutive title in 1993 and made it three in a row in 1994 with an overwhelming 61 3/4-point victory. James led UCO to its fourth consecutive crown in 1995 as the Bronchos rolled up 148 points, the second-highest point total in NCAA Division II history. Central fell just short of a fifth straight title in 1996, finishing second by a narrow margin, and then was third in 1997. The Bronchos placed fourth in 1998 and then crowned two national champions in finishing third in 1999. Another runner-up finish followed in 2000 and the Bronchos tied for third in 2001 after going 13-2-1 in duals. UCO made it back on top in 2002, putting together a stellar 15-1 dual record and ending a six-year championship drought by crowning four individual champions in winning its 13th national team title. James and the Bronchos repeated as title winners in 2003, going 18-1 in duals and finishing with three individual champions. Central finished third in its bid for a third straight title in 2004. UCO had its 15-year string of Midwest Regional titles ended in 2005 en route to an 11th-place national tournament showing, but D.J.’s troops bounced back with a fourth-place national showing in 2006. The Bronchos captured their 15th title in 2007, following a 15-4 dual season with the Midwest Regional crown and a stirring national tournament performance in beating favored Nebraska-Kearney by 16 points. UCO was 14-6 in duals, won another regional title and finished sixth nationally in 2007-08 and went 11-6-1 with a regional runner-up finish

2013-14 UCO Wrestling Assistant Coaches Kyle Evans Taking over as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach in 2013-14 is Kyle Evans, one of the most decorated wrestlers in the school’s illustrious history. Evans spent his entire career at 141 pounds and was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion for the Bronchos. He finished with a 125-20 record that ranks fifth on the school’s all-time list for winning percentage (.862) and eighth for wins. Kyle redshirted his first year and then beat out a returning All-American in earning the starting berth in 200405, winning the regional title and finishing sixth nationally en route to a 24-13 record. He came back the next season to go 30-5, winning 22 of his last 24 matches to capture a second straight regional crown before finishing as the national runner-up. Evans was virtually unbeatable his final two seasons, going a combined 71-2 in winning back-to-back national championships. He became the first UCO wrestler to complete a full season undefeated as a junior in 2006-07 with a perfect 39-0 record that included 18 bonus-point wins and was named Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year before sweeping four matches in winning the national title. Kyle repeated as both Midwest Regional Wrestler of the Year and national champion during a dominating senior season that saw him finish 32-2 with 18 bonus-point wins. Evans became just the second UCO wrestler to win four regional titles and he had a 43-match winning streak that ranks as the third-longest in school history. He earned 53 bonus-point wins during his career with a school-record 25 technical falls. A state champion as a senior at Edmond North High School, Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies from UCO in 2008 and worked in the medical sales field before returning to UCO.

Chris Hacker Serving in his second season as a graduate assistant coach for Central Oklahoma is former state high school standout Chris Hacker. Hacker came to UCO last year and played a key role as the Bronchos went 13-1 in winning the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual title while finishing runner-up in the MIAA and regional tournaments and fourth in the national meet. Chris was a two-time state champion for perennial power El Reno High School while also earning All-America honors seven times before continuing his wrestling career at Nebraska. He spent five years with the Huskers while battling an assortment of injuries that limited his career on the mat. Hacker earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from NU. He’s working on his master’s in psychology at UCO.

He made it back to the national tournament at 184 again as a senior last year in going 24-18. 2013-14 UCO Wrestling 2013-14 Season Outlook Also here are seniors Cody Salter and Kasey Wilcox along with sophomore Dylan Harmon. Coach James Says: “It looks pretty wide open, with three guys in the mix. Colton hasn’t been on the mat much because of injuries and hopefully he’s past that, but he’s worked awful hard to get bigger and he’s very talented. Zach has been with us three years and has got a lot of experience. He’ll do a lot of wrestling for us and we’ll see in what role it will be. Kyle is a dangerous wrestler who has a chance to make himself heard. All three of those guys know it’s a weight where somebody needs to step up and we’ll have to see what happens.”

One of the most exciting wrestlers in the nation, Basks went 31-6 with 19 bonus-point wins -- including a team-high 13 falls -- last year before dropping two tough matches at nationals during a fifth-place finish. Pushing Basks in the practice room will be newcomer Spencer Rutherford, a junior college All-American, with sophomore LeSean Sanders and possibly freshman Alec Warren also available. Coach James Says: “Jordan was disappointed by his performance at the national tournament, but he had a great year for us and I think he’ll take his experiences to the next level. He’s an exciting wrestler who scores a lot of bonus points and his goal is to be on top this year. Spencer is a talented guy and I like his grit and think he’s a good fit for us.”

184 Pounds

The Bronchos lost a four-year starter here, but a returning national qualifier at 197 will drop down and fill that void nicely. Senior Znick Ferrell was a late addition to the team last year at 197 and overcame a lengthy layoff from wrestling to go 25-14 in making it to the national tournament. He should be even better at this weight and is poised to contend for All-America recognition. Sophomores Cason Montgomery and Michael Conner along with rookies Jacob Lamb, and Reid Rodich give depth. Coach James Says: “I thought Znick turned the corner the second semester last year and beat some really good guys on the national level. This is a better weight for him, he’s got a great attitude and his national tournament experience will motivate him. We’ve got some good, young guys at this weight as well.”

157 Pounds

Ready to make a run at a second straight national title is senior star Cory Dauphin, who ended UCO’s four-year drought without an individual champion last season. Dauphin was fantastic all year in putting together a 28-3 campaign that ended with an 18-match winning streak and he’s focused on joining an elite group of two-time champions. UCO has good depth, led by two-time junior college All-American Jeromy Davenport. Freshman Kyle Driscoll and redshirt freshman Forest Myers are also here. Coach James Says: “We’ve always known Cory had the talent and athletic ability to be a champion, but he really put it all together last year. His match approach and everything went to another level. He wants to be a two-time champion and is working toward that, but it won’t be easy and he’s going to have to work for it. Jeromy is a real physical kid who will press Cory and Kyle has a lot of talent as well.”

197 Pounds

Easily the biggest hole in the lineup, with UCO depending on one of two youngsters to step in. Redshirt freshman Garrett Henshaw has the edge from being in the program a year, with sophomore newcomer Quinn Hulsey 165 Pounds looking to make an impact. Junior Chris Watson returns and will be among the Coach James Says: “This is a huge best in the country after coming on strong late last year question mark for us. Freshman John Finn is the back-up and has a bright future. Coach James Says: “Hopefully Cody will use the success he had at the national tournament and take it to another level. He’s been solid for us throughout his career and needs to be hungry in his last go-around to finish the right way. John is a hard-working young guy who a lot of high school success and he comes from a great wrestling family.”

174 Pounds

Another weight with no clear-cut favorite in what appears to be a three-man race, with the Bronchos needing someone to take over. Sophomore Colton Gallo is looking to get his injury-plagued career going and he’s definitely got a chance to come out on top here, but senior Zach Aylor is a two-year letterman ready to be the main guy and junior Kyle Buckley should also be in the running. 9

2013-14 UCO Wrestling The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles. The MIAA currently conducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women. For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf. The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis. The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA. The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA. The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State),

Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980. Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007. Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over. Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season. Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season. Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood. Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year. Truman will remain an MIAA associate member in wrestling, with Newman joining the MIAA in that capacity as well to give the league seven wrestling schools
