Other Eco-Friendly Trends
Currently UC San Diego Extension offers 295 courses that are online and another 29 hybrid courses. While interest in classes that are totally online also continues to climb, many students prefer hybrid courses because they offer the convenience of online learning along with networking opportunities of being face-to-face. Some hybrid courses that are being offered include: • Corporate Social Responsibility • Clinical Trials Administration • Legal Communications Not all students learn the same way, so presenting materials in a range of formats can help make sure every student is fully engaged in at least some class activities. “Face-to-face is not the gold standard that it’s held up to be,” says Chris Dede, professor of learning technologies at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. “Many people find their voice in distance media in a way that they don’t in face-to-face sessions,” he says. Dede points out that shy students or international students without a full grasp of English, for instance, might feel uncomfortable participating in a classroom environment. However these same students might frequently comment in online forums where students have more time to think before they speak.
While most continuing education courses still take place over a three-month quarter, UC San Diego Extension offers intensive and short courses that allow students to finish their studies in a month or even a few days. The courses are the same number of instruction hours but less commutes to campus, which translates to lower transportation costs. Students can also save gas by taking courses at an off-site center located closer to where they work or live. For the convenience of working adults, most courses are held evenings and weekends on the UC San Diego main campus and three other locations: the Extension Sorrento Mesa Center, the Extension Rancho Bernardo Center and the Extension Mission Valley Center. ■

The Rise of the Healthcare Specialist
Advance Degrees Bridge Gaps
By Henry DeVries
F
ifty years ago, Peter F. Drucker saw your future: you would be a knowledge worker. A term first used by the father of management in his 1959 book, Landmarks of Tomorrow, the knowledge worker is someone who is employed due to his or her knowledge of a subject matter. Drucker foresaw that education and development would be the primary concern of a knowledge society. “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose,” wrote Drucker in a 1988 Harvard Business Review article. “Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized.” Before he passed away in 2005 at the age of 95, Drucker witnessed the rise of his predictions, including specialized master’s degrees for specialized careers. A Google search reveals that specialized master’s degrees are a rapidly growing trend in the field of management education. While the MBA remains a popular choice for getting ahead, specialized master’s degrees are providing new choices for those who want to differentiate themselves and stand out from the crowd of other managers.
Evidence of the trend are two continuing education master’s degrees that allow healthcare professionals the opportunity to study parttime at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, which is consistently ranked in the top ten of public medical schools.
degree programs build on the academic strength and reputation of the Both
UC San Diego School of
Medicine.
The Master’s Degree in the Leadership of Healthcare Organizations and the Master’s Degree in Clinical Research are both fully accredited part-time graduate programs with courses taught by renowned faculty from the UC San Diego School of Medicine and leaders in the healthcare industry. UC San Diego Extension administers these programs. Both degree programs build on the academic strength and reputation of the UC San Diego School of Medicine. In this year’s “Best Graduate Schools” edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked the UC San Diego School of Medicine 5th in the nation among public medical schools and 14th among all U.S. medical schools.
Consider the case of Lisa De La Cruz, a charge nurse who enjoyed supervising staff. She knew a move into management was a logical step but didn’t know how to get there. Her nursing degree and experience offered an invaluable perspective but didn’t fully prepare her to handle all the complex financial, management and policy issues of running a hospital unit. When her employer suggested the specialized master’s degree program at UC San Diego, she knew enrolling in the program would pave the way for future career advancement. Focused and talented employees like De La Cruz tend to attract opportunities. While attending UC San Diego, she was recruited from her supervisory nursing position to fill a management role at another healthcare facility. De La Cruz recognized advanced training as vital to moving up within any organization. She built on her completed coursework and finished her specialized master’s degree. Today De La Cruz is busy as Director of Patient Care Services at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista supervising more than 130 employees. Another example is UC San Diego alumnae Debbie Dannemeyer, a registered nurse who juggled staff management at both a mediumsized clinic and at a United States Air Force Reserve Aeromedical Staging Squadron. When she asked senior leadership how to take her career to the next level, earning a master’s degree topped the list. Dannemeyer found going back to school at UC San Diego to study leadership of healthcare organizations “very exciting” and directly applicable to her everyday management challenges. Today she and her colleagues at Kaiser Permanente in Orange County are taking a top-to-bottom look at primary care delivery, a strategic challenge she eagerly tackles. She handles population care management and quality performance measures for 400,000 patients. Her specialized degree helps her lead an ambulatory practice of 800-plus employees including medical assistants, licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The skills she gained through her master’s degree help her focus a strategic lens to her daily responsibilities. For more information on the UC San Diego healthcare master’s degree programs visit the Web sites at lhco.ucsd.edu or clre.ucsd.edu.
