RULE OF LAW CENTER

DIPLOMA IN ENGLISH LAW AND LEGAL SKILLS TYPE OF PROGRAM:

MODULAR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

DURATION:

OCTOBER 2018 – MAY 2019

PARTNERS:

JURIS ANGLIAE SCIENTIA, UKRAINIAN BAR ASSOCIATION

British Law Centre of the UCU Law School The Law School of the Ukrainian Catholic University begins cooperation with the British educational foundation Juris Angliae Scientia, based at the Law Faculty of the University of Cambridge and run by senior members of the Law Faculty (including the Faculty Dean, Professor Richard Fentiman). Within the framework of this cooperation, UCU creates the first British Law Centre in Ukraine. Such centres already operate in many universities in Central and Eastern Europe. The primary purpose of the first Centre in Ukraine is the organization and implementation of the English Law and Legal Skills Diploma Program.

IN LAW 14

«Cooperating with the Juris Angliae Scientia foundation and creating the Center for British Law of the UCU Law School is an exceptionally important step both for the university and for the legal profession in Ukraine. English law is one of the most commonly applied when entering into contracts and resolving disputes in legal practice. Now Ukrainian lawyers will have the opportunity to acquire necessary knowledge and skills in this sphere at UCU. Similar programs are already operating in Ukraine in American, Polish, and German law. And this program complements this palette». Ivan Horodyskyy, Director of the UCU Law School

Diploma in English Law and Legal Skills The curriculum includes courses in English legal system, Contract and Tort law, written and oral legal skills, negotiation and contract drafting etc. Participants are provided with course materials that are specially written for the Diploma by a team of legal experts including academics from the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Law and a specially-created educational foundation based at that Faculty (Juris Angliae Scientia). Teaching is provided by experts in substantive law and legal skills training who visit Ukraine especially to teach the Diploma Program.

ÂŤOur course is a mix of the basic provisions of material law and soft skills. First we become acquainted with the English legal system, learning more about contracts, tort law, and the right of trust. At first glance, the right of trust always seems incomprehensible, for in the majority of countries there is nothing similar. These are basic disciplines which can be mastered in Great Britain.

In addition, we teach our students practical skills, using the material law course as a basis for mastering necessary practical skills. Today we are teaching matters connected with defense strategy, both at the pre-trial stage and also during the trial in court. We also want to turn our attention to drawing up contracts, writing foundational documents for clients, etc. That is, this course not only provides an understanding of English law but explains how it should be appled. The course demonstrates the difference in philosophy and approaches to lawyerclient and lawyer-judge relations. So it will also be interesting for lawyers with 20 years of experience, inasmuch as this will give them the opportunity to look in a new way at their approach to work with clients, knowing how this is done in other countries. When we see the difference, we better understand what we are doing and whyÂť. Steve Terrett, Coordinator of the Certificate Program in English Law and Legal Skills

MASTER’S PROGRAM

GRADUATES ON STUDYING AT THE MASTER’S PROGRAM OF THE UCU LAW SCHOOL THE ATMOSPHERE The Master’s Program in Human Rights at UCU has irrevocably changed my world outlook. I was fortunate to study with wonderful people who demonstrated every day that it is possible and necessary to be, at the same time, professional, ethical, and simply happy. It’s good that UCU has a Law School, that there are lawyers at UCU, and good that we all happened to meet each other. Olena Kandya, 2018 graduate, lawyer at Marchenko Partners, dispute resolution practice

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES After the first week of studies at UCU, I had my first two moot court teams – the Jessup and EHRMCC competitions. As a result of the national and other selections, we flew to Washington and Strasbourg, certainly raised our level of English to C2 and our analytical skills to those of agents of the Mossad. We received permanent items to list on our resumes and many other bonuses that I will enjoy as a member of both teams. In any case, after these competitions, each of us made new friends and had a great opportunity to test our legal maximum and strength. Oleksandr Kozhukhar, 2019 graduate, lawyer at Axon Partners IN LAW 25

MASTER’S PROGRAM

QUALITY OF THE PROGRAM

What did I get out of a year of studying at the UCU Law School Master’s Program. Nothing. Nothing except raising the quality of my legal writing, knowledge in the theory and practice of the ECHR, mastering the law of the World Trade Organization, the ability to use human rights principles at international structures, skills in writing agreements in the area of intellectual property, norms and principles of consulting with clients and communicating with them, improving my legal English, opportunities to study at the UCU Lviv Business School (LvBS), developing soft skills, team work, and combating a fear of public speaking. And, most importantly – thanks to the master’s, I believe in human rights. Oleg Chuchman, 2019 graduate, in-house lawyer at the IT-company Global Tech Makers

And what is it that this master’s program truly provides? An atmosphere of adventure. Impossible to explain, it can only be experienced. Mary Grynyshyn, 2019 graduate, lawyer at the Legislative Drafting Center
