f we believe the dictionary and the research related to this topic , it appears that addiction is truly something negative. Too widely associated with drugs, sex and other unsavory leisure activities, the world equates to abuse, addiction, enslavement , about obsession with unbearable desire , appetite both deviant and insatiable . No need to wonder about the dark image of the term when the medias get a hold of it... What about skateboarding in all this? If UDmag choose this thema, it is not by chance. Skateboarding is a completely addictive sport that unlike vices of our society, contributes to the balance of the individual. We therefore considered that there is good in addiction. Far beyond the urge to ride , skate is about building relationships, meet people from different backgrounds , sit over a beer and a unique experience . Riding is freedom from the daily pressure. Get out of a modern society plagued by money and governed by human rules based on an business logic. Riding to surpass oneself, have fun and find satisfaction in the performance of the movement. Riding , it’s not just do tricks or even worse, to invent yourself a rider lifestyle on social networks . Riding is to be aware of the environment in which it operates and with its methods and its risks. The effects are so powerful that some people take the time to organize, develop projects to serve the community and worse, riding , it’s also a magazine without money with the sole motto , the passion, « the stoke « as our American friends would say . Assume the ubiquity of the computer, late timelines, the vagaries of life, to understand the players in the field and that even beyond borders ... To expose all the reasons that give meaning to the voluntary and passionate addiction is hard , the small team of your longboard magazine has chosen to travel to Sweden, Australia, California, France, Italy to meet people who were willing to share with you slices of life and testimonials that illustrate the theme of this ninth issue .

UD - Sweden is so far from France. What does the Swedish longboard scene look like ? AP - Well, we don’t have the big hills. Far from it! The longest run we have is a minute long and the top speed is 60km/h (for 2seconds). So we have to make do with what’s out there. We try to skate tight pack runs and really have to work hard for the speed. In places like Colorado or in the Alps, you can easily go 80km/h standing up. We don’t even have hills that fast while tucking. Other than downhill there is a big cruising scene. There are boards everywhere on the streets now.

UD - Do you invest yourself in longboard development in Sweden? AP - I try to attend as many events as possible, S A TOP CONTENDER have as much fun as possible and stoke people out. IN THE 2013 SEASON, I work at the Kahalani shop and try to help other people with my experience and knowledge. UD - How long have you been longboarding ? AP - A couple of years, five maybe six. Don’t really know what year I picked it up.

UD - How people and authorities consider/perceive longboarding ? AP - Most people have a really good attitude towards longboarders here. I’ve seen several cops wanting to try my boards and taking pictures of us riding. It’s very relaxed !

AP - A short hill with two turns and an uphill section here in Stockholm. Didn’t take much back then to get me hooked. Going 45km/h was the best feeling in the world at the time ! UD - How and what do you feel when you bomb hills ? AP - Feels great! It puts a big smile on my face. I sometimes even sing going down hills because I don’t know what to do with all the endorphins. HAPPY TIMES! The wind in your face, the urethane gripping the road, taking a sweet line, knowing that it’s only gravity pulling you down and the fact that you can do 100km/h+ on a piece of wood. It’s a really cool experience ! UD - Would you say it’s a kind of addiction ?

AP - wouldn’t say that longboarding itself is an addiction. I love skiing just as much if not more. But gravity sports are definitely an addiction ! UD - You’ve been racing for a couple of years. What’s the difference between IDF & IGSA ? AP - IDF is really new, so I don’t want to say more at the moment. But I do like the transponder system. UD - What’s the best race you’ve ever done ? AP - As an event Ekstremsportveko in VOSS, Norway, is the best. No doubt! It is 5-6 days of freeriding sick hills including two days of racing. Having a great time every year. Beautiful scenery, great people and probably some of the best hills in the world. UD - 1 European and brand new world champion. What are your plans for next season?

UD - Hi Chubbs. How are you doing ? CH - Pretty well. Busy as usual, but that’s a good thing. UD - Would you say that skateboarding is an addiction for you ? CH - Absolutely. It’s very rare that a day goes by where I don’t ride my skateboard even if I’m just skating to the market and back. UD - What does longboarding give you ? CH - Exploration, adventure, and life itself. I find it to be the best lens through which to view the world around me. UD - How long has Caliber Trucks existed ? CH - We’ve been in business since 2010. UD - Tons of longboarders shred your trucks. What makes you so popular ? CH - Performance. We started out by designing a truck that would feel and act the way we wanted, and we have never stopped revising that design. Although

we’ve never come out with “V2” series, our trucks are constantly being updated to incorporate rider and customer feedback. If you’ve been riding our trucks over the years, you can set them side-by-side and notice the tweaks and changes. UD - #4 best longboard trucks by Longbord Charts & #1 CW buyers guide 2013. Why do you think you’ve had so much success ? CH - Starting from a thigh-performance foundation, we’ve built one of the best media production teams around. Everyone involved in capturing how our riders are pushing the boundaries of skateboarding is very talented. Whether its still imagery or video, our crew is constantly looking for new ways to capture skateboarding in the most visually stimulating way possible. UD - The market of skateboard trucks is huge. What’s your opinion about perfect trucks? CH - The perfect truck is not real. Everyone has different taste and style of riding. We have a saying around here: “Progress, not perfection.” We’re not trying to be perfect. We’re trying to be better than we were yesterday, and that shows in the trucks that we make.

UD - What do you think about the fact that longboarders are more attracted by CNC precision trucks ? CH - I think it’s a reflection of riders everywhere trying to push their own limits. When you switch to precision trucks, you’re eliminating any sloppiness that might come from a non-precision truck. You’re providing yourself with the most direct feel of wheels in contact with the road beneath you. It’s a direct translation. UD - We see riders bombing hills well with cast trucks. Are CNC trucks essential ? CH - I would not say that they are essential. Our precision trucks had been out for quite some time before I eventually grabbed a set for myself. In my opinion, there’s quite a bit of learning curve to go through before making the switch to precisions. There’s a lot of insight into how a skateboard moves and feels when you’re riding a cast set of trucks. If you don’t go through that phase of skateboarding, I think you’re missing out on some very important experiences. That being said, there is a significant difference in the way precision trucks ride versus cast trucks. You should take a girl to dinner before you take her home though…

CH - We don’t design our future as much as we set trajectories, then change them based on what that future brings. Better trucks, more colors, and entirely new products are just a few of the ideas we’re working towards. Everyone will have to wait and find out though… UD - Caliber’s motto? CH - «Progress, not perfection.»

UD - A couple of brands that make longboard trucks focus their energy on innovating trucks (design, technology…). What about Caliber Trucks? CH - We’re always looking to improve on our designs. When it comes to innovation, we have yet to see a “new” technology that actually improves the performance of the truck itself versus that of the skater. Certain skaters have an approach in riding style that is complemented by different truck designs, and that’s where the increase in performance comes from. Still, we are constantly looking for better designs and exploring new technologies. We take advantage of local manufacturing and additive manufacturing technologies to really explore what’s possible in truck design. UD - Your precision trucks look a lot like the cast edition. Why did you choose to make them sober ? CH - We like the aesthetic our cast trucks have. It’s simple, clean, and has strong lines that represent that solid foundation we constantly seek to improve upon. Why would we want to change it? Other precision trucks on the market try so hard to differentiate themselves – and end up looking as if an aerospace company designed them –they just look ugly. These trucks are designed to be shredded here on earth, not rocketed to Mars. UD - How does Caliber Trucks design its future? More trucks, CNC wheels?

CALIBER TRUCKS PRECISION SETUP: Bushings : Blood Orange 89A High Rebound Board : Airflow Brackett Wheels : DTC Victory Grip

At first glance, the Caliber accuracy was surprising. A design almost identical to the originals, a baseplate with similar angle, a hanger that can be described as classic, you might think: ”nothing very surprising.” But behind this pseudo copy and paste from the ‘Cast’ version a stimulating product is hiding! A light weight, better studied components, a set equipped with a sober and refined finish, they are actually very different and can truly compete in the prestigious category of the precision trucks.

DESIGN & WEIGHT: Take in comparison a truck ‘Cast’ and a ‘Precision’, for those who are not convinced, the difference is obvious. Certainly, both have a similar geometry, the bias of the resemblance can make you cringe, but the finish of the ‘Precision’ version have nothing to do with the ‘Cast ‘. Beautiful, it combines both finesse and strength. Curves and angles offer a real grace for a coming truck of a gross-like model. Weightwise, ‘Precision’ wins with 928 grams (pair) against 946 grams for the ‘Cast ‘. A gain that can be felt by hand and especially when mounting the pair on a Board.

COMPONENTS:

PIVOT CUP : compared to the ‘Cast’, the cup of the ‘Precision’ pivot has better results. Both beefier and more narrow, it is one of its strengths. Its gum highdensity, 95A said duro «Riot Thane» truly makes the difference. The axle of the truck head is right and fits perfectly into the cup without apparent game pivot. BUSHING SEAT (TRUCKS) : inserts bushings also benefit from an update. Better defined, we see and we feel that once the gums is installed, they no longer move. The pressure is therefore better distributed for a more serene and precise ride. BUSHINGS : 89A original, they allow to easily turn and come back as dry. KINGPIN : steel, they are one of the points that could have been better developed. When is a little shaken, one feels a little game that surprises (game not felt on my « Cast »). BASEPLATE & HANGER : Baseplate usually ships within & Hanger: they are identical to the ‘Cast ‘. The difference lies in the finishing work that has a direct impact on the weight. The baseplate usually ships within is at 44 °; both are manufactured in aluminium of high density making it very resistant. AXIS : From heat treatment, they are solid, removable, and ensure a good wheel traction. They come with aluminum spacers (10, 2 mm) and the speedrings gold aluminum (1, 5 mm) precision that ensures a good resistance of the wheel. No guaranteed game. The icing on the cake, Caliber gave everything in the packaging. All comes in a black box in which we find a series of bushings high-rebound Blood Orange 80a, 83A, 86A, 92A, what customize your setup to your liking. BEHAVIOR: The Board is stable and responsive at a time, one feels that the trucks are safe. On, self-confidence wins points. When turning, it feels that pivot cup doing wonderfully well his job and that the bushings have a good return. The curves are done and undone, flying in them becomes a child’s play but watch out for overconfidence that can quickly end in a slope. Bombing the hills is a true pleasure, the stability is there; heavy feel grow wings with the 92A. The ride is comfortable, fluid, and without vibrations. When we

slide, skiing is very nice but watch out for the return. A small update will be necessary from a technical standpoint of ride. VERDICT: The trucks are tough, strong point that we already know caliber for putting on the market of the ‘Cast’ models already very resistant. The ‘Precision’ are also, so we can take them away. So similar to the original version, Caliber remains proud of his beliefs with a shape which has already attracted thousands of riders. The differences with the ‘Cast’ are finishing and materials used in the manufacture of the «Precision». Treaty, high density, anodized aluminium and even bling-bling make the ‘Precision’ of sober trucks, thin and beautiful to look at - it smells like California! All this makes the product more attractive, more technical, and of course more expensive. In the end, the ‘Precision’ are very widely recommended and appear as good trucks for the downhill. Light and heavy weight will find their account. Good ride !

From the 8th to 11th of August, the Pyrenees have witnessed an amazing show. Audiences of all international banks and riders are given an appointment at one of the best tracks in the world, that of Peyragudes. Photographed with the speed, the drift and has a track to make your head spin, not surprising that Peyragudes Never Dies gain weight on the world stage skateboard downhill organization. UD - Hi Flavio, I’m sure that 90% of French riders don’t know you. Can you tell us a little bit about who you are? FB - I’m a professional skateboarder sponsored by Early Skateboards Australia. I also teach skateboarding in schools and do a lot of photography. I’m originally from Brazil but I’ve been living in Australia for 9 years now. I don’t know much about the French skateboard scene but I’m really good friends with a French rider called Olivier Bareaud and he’s really good.

UD - How long have you been skating ? FB - I got my first skateboard in 1985 and have been skating since. UD - Did you always wear a helmet to skateboard? FB - I never used to wear a helmet, most of the shortboard skaters don’t… I didn’t even own a helmet for more than 20 years. But since I got into downhill skating (3 years ago) I’ve been wearing a helmet, especially after my accident.

FOR MORE THAN 6 HRS I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW WHO I WAS

UD - Until the “lost memory” fall. Can you tell us about this crash ? FB - I did a handplant skating a bowl and my trucks got stuck on the coping, I fell on the flat and hit the back of my head. That was the craziest day of my life, for more than 6 hrs I didn’t even know who I was. I had a 5 second memory spam, my brain was deleting all the information every 5 seconds and I kept asking the same questions. That day still doesn’t really exist in my memory, luckily we were filming for the new range of boards and the boys got everything on film. UD - After the recovery, did you think that the accident was due to your own clumsiness from you, or bad luck or ...? FB - It took me about 2 weeks to get back on my board and I had to do the handplant again to finish the helmet video, in a bowl that was much bigger than the one I had the accident and I was shitting myself - it was definitely challenging. It was a traumatic experience and I had to work hard to move beyond to get rid of the fear.

UD - What’s your opinion about safety & skateboarding ? FB - I’ve been screening the helmet video in schools and talking about protective gear to the kids and I highly recommend the use of it, especially helmets. I always tell the kids I don’t wear my helmet all the time but I do wear a lot, I can’t even step on a downhill board without a helmet.

don’t even step on their boards if they are not wearing a helmet. In the longboard community the use of a helmet is strongly recommended and it’s definitely part of the dress code. I always tell everyone how important the helmet is, but you cant really say “you HAVE to wear a helmet” cause at the end of the day everyone is free to do whatever they want. Freedom is the pure spirit of skateboarding and there aren’t really any rules. You are free to be yourself! If you feel like you should be wearing a helmet just do it, and don’t worry about what people think about you.. the helmet could save your life which is more important than anything. And if you feel like you don’t need to wear a helmet don’t do it. It’s up to you really, just remember you are taking big risks if you don’t have a helmet on. UD - What about your friends ? FB - My street skater fiends never wear helmets but all of my downhill friends do. UD - Last word about skate addiction? FB - Skateboarding has done a lot for me and I love it so much, it had a huge influence in my life and it’s directly responsible for the person I became. Skate safe and skate for ever !

UD - Are Ozriders educated in safety practice ? FB - Definitely, the Australian longboard community is pretty well aware of the importance of protective gear. You’ll never see someone skating downhill without a helmet. UD - The helmet is not really a part of the skateboarder’s dress-code. What’s your opinion about that ? FB - NWhen it comes to wearing a helmet there’s a huge difference between shortboarders and longboarders. fter a long startup finally the Italian longboard scene seems to take its place. This year new events were born and old ones has been established. Florence Open Skate, Montestella freeride, Slash the Temple, Poggio-Q pro race, Montemale freeride, Avenale di Cingoli, Padova Grand Prix, Lozio Skateorum, Cavallino freeride jam, Roma Longboard fest: the big and small cities, the north, the south and the islands are finally offering us the chance to ride safe, meet people and bring home good prizes. We think that the forum Longboarditalia.it - http://www.longboarditalia.com/ a good job last years and in a way it represents the core around which all the news and the events were shared and created. Thanks’ to the forum we met new people riding in our zone and we could finally ride together and find new spots.

hat’s how the crew Under the Belly (http://www. underthebelly.it/) was born. Matteo di Carlo is managing the website; we’re trying to push longboarding in the centre of Italy since two years now. Even if we’d prefer to eat, chatter and drink with the old people in the valleys of the Apennines’ crest, we also find the time to look for new spots, invite the riders from Rome and the other neighborhood cities and eventually take part to the events. It’s moving slowly but in the good mood, and maybe with some help and some more experience we’ll be able to rise up a real event project. We’d like to thank UD for thinking about us. keep this beautiful and «down to the roots» discipline away from the business dimension of skateboarding ( street ) and surfing. I hope the longboard keep its fun, food and close to nature dimension.

UD - Joking aside, tell us about LRBX. Why create a longboard school?

UD - How many riders are apprentices he has in your school so far?

C - LRBX ! This project is close to my heart for some years now. I’ve been involved in both the extreme sport culture sports for a long time and I work as an educator, I ‘ve always had a sweet dream to combine these two passions that define my character. When I started longboarding I took part in its development in Belgium and I realized that there was a great opportunity to create the first longboard school in Belgium. But, contrary to how one might imagine a school in the classical sense, LRBX is a true partnership with a group «art of life» that supports beginners looking to start longboard. It develops on many levels regardless of discipline (DH , Dancing , Slide , Freeride ... ) , traveling, participating in events and being part of an open and non-elitist community.

C - It’s a bit difficult to assess the number of riders who are part of the school because many courses are taught in schools and sports centers. In summer, it turns around 200 young people, and during school holidays, around 40 people ... and for 2 years. Week open sessions are organized with materials provided for free . These sessions have twenty riders per week . Beginners are more and more numerous, it is downright amazing.

UD - Was there a particular motivation, a trigger? C - The passion for longboard and passion for people, period! I am a very sensitive, very involved. I thirst to develop projects, to bring people together and make something beautiful outside of my job and family. The longboard scene is still very young unlike skateboarding and surfing. So there is much to do to continue to

UD - What are the subjects taught ? C - The main subject taught is:” IT IS FUN TO RIDE !” This is the base given all these young people who are strongly influenced by the pros, sponsors, and competitions. The most important thing is that they discover or rediscover the sensations of skiing , happiness and freedom that longboard provides. Then they learn, depending on their level of motivation. We believe it is important that riders can touch everything and then specialize in a desired field. Our riders are the key to everything!

UD - What tools are used in teaching longboard / skateboard with the kids? C - The methods used come from my experience as a sports educator. The approach is tailored to the type of rider. For example, it will be different when dealing with a group of school children aged 8 to 12 years, to a private lesson for a 18 year old who wants to focus on learning DH. This sport is an expressive sport, so it gives clues, tips, leaving riders to express themselves in their own way, to create their own dimension, their own style. This is our definition of longboard according LRBX. UD - How is the practice of longskate perceived with parents ? C - Everything is a question of image. During the many sessions held in the wild and the beautiful areas around Brussels, for example, is expected to be driven quickly to have the font on the back ...

The reality was very different. Being courteous, respectful of the neighbourhood and the environment (waste types) as well as promoting a positive image of the longboard, this has allowed us to be invited by the parents to have more children for initiations and even to have councils very interested in investing in the longboard as a discipline for sports centres. We aim to enter into politics sports and cultural development of municipalities by 2014-2015. UD - Lately, the use of helmets was the new big thing. What is your message about it ?

UD - The longboard schools are growing big. Isn’t there material to create a network ? C - This would indeed be a very nice idea to develop a network to exchange different points of view (methodologies, problems, records sponsoring research funding , websites...). Because ultimately, he goal of every longboard school is more or less the same: develop longboard, make new addicts, promote a positive image of our discipline and allow everyone to practice it safely.

C - As a permanent rider (I ride almost every day of the year), I think it is very important to ride with a helmet. Like cycling, a fall on the head is often rare, but when it happens, it can have dramatic sometimes irreversible consequences. Once it is a habit then everything is settled. Personally, I did not care if a guy broke his face on the asphalt, but I try to explain what it is for the sport and respect for themselves. If people see longboarders with helmet and pads, they have an image of a safe sport and it will allow us to continue to develop the longboard and position ourselves with institutions.
