Often genealogists jump into the deep end of the pool, researching madly online, without much planning or understanding of the field. For beginners and those deep in “TMI” (too much information), this course will cover pre-research stages and provide an overview of organizing, software and digital resources, research strategies and methodology.

We will use Ancestry, FamilySearch and FindMyPast and learn how to collect information required to research foreign resources and then examine how to access resources in several countries including England, Ireland, Germany, Italy and others depending on the class interests. Students with all levels of experience can benefit from this class.

This course will use both free and pay-for-use internet resources to research family history. The goal of the course is not only to conduct traditional genealogy research, but to add depth and context to your research. Adding pictures, historical context as well as other research will help broaden the scope of your ancestral story. This course is best suited for researchers who have a basic knowledge of genealogy research, however, beginning students may also find it helpful.
