Lectures and Seminars

Lasdun Lectures What is the intersection of medicine and the humanities? On the surface of things, these two subjects might seem unrelated but at this very special panel event three leading UEA academics – Professor (and author of medical memoir The Language of Kindness: A Nurse’s Story) Christie Watson, Dr Harriet Cooper and Professor Sally Hardy invite you to explore how they intersect to create a more holistic approach to healthcare Thu 26 May, 6.30pm The Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle St, London W1S 4BS Free Booking essential Visit bit.ly/UEALasdunLecture2022

The event will explore how the teaching of narrative and storytelling is important for future clinicians and their patients; the ways in which cultural practices – mundane social interactions, medical gazes and media representations – could be said to ‘produce’ disability as an experience and object of study; and how engaging with creative arts can be beneficial in improving strategies for workplace wellbeing. Given the shared experience of the pandemic, its legacy and considerable fatigue, these conversations have never felt more poignant

10

The event will also feature a portraiture exhibition from recent UEA graduate, Dr Lena Ibrahim. Now working as an academic junior doctor at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, she began painting her NHS colleagues to unwind after long and stressful shifts. The artworks beautifully capture the experience of being on the front line and are a fantastic example of how medicine and the humanities can overlap in practice This will be the first London-based Lasdun Lecture for two years and there could be no better place to celebrate the homecoming than The Royal Institution of Great Britain. This venue has been at the forefront of introducing new teachings in science to the public and truly a spectacle within itself – an event you will not want to miss
