As Hispanics become a business and consumer powerhouse in Utah, the more important our work becomes. This publication is testimony of the commitment that the UHCC has for our community and gives foresight to the direction in which the Chamber is moving. On the national level Hispanic businesses are growing at more than twice the rate of non-Hispanic businesses, the same goes for Hispanic businesses in Utah, where sales and receipts are close to $1.5 billion and Hispanic consumers spend $7 billion in our state. As our community grows exponentially so does the Chamber, today we are proud to say that we advocate and represent the interests of more than ten thousand Hispanic owned businesses across the state. We have more than seventy corporate partners and last year alone, more than one hundred UHCC Staff

small businesses joined our ranks, many of them owned by Spanish speaking owners. The UHCC is a true portrayal of the community that we represent. To fulfill the need generated by this growth in membership, we created a strategy focused on partnerships, business education, advocacy and community leadership. We now produce a two-day convention in May, a very successful fundraising golf tournament in August, a women’s business leadership conference in September, five networking events in Spanish, traditional and online marketing resources, a Spanish motivational conference, technology workshops, trainings for small business owners / start-ups and seminars for business executives. Almost twenty-five years ago, five courageous entrepreneurs had a vision and a dream of creating an organization that truly represented the best interest of our business community, thanks to you, now we are the largest and most influential diverse business organization in our state. Whether you’re a start up, a business owner, a new chamber member or a longtime chamber supporter this publication will give you a first-hand look at our member and mainstream companies that support our efforts. We encourage you to do business with the companies who invest in their community through their affiliation with the UHCC. This publication is our gift to you. Together we are all working to enhance prosperity in Utah! Sincerely, Francisco Sotelo President & CEO
Over the past few years, the UHCC has become an influential organization and a strong voice for the Hispanic business community in Utah. It plays a key role in coordinating and defining common goals for the relationships between business, community and government. One of the truly valuable benefits of this organization is that it provides an effective forum for members and organizations to share knowledge and experiences with each other. The UHCC was established in 1991 with a handful of entrepreneurs who had a vision for diversity in commerce. Since then, our Chamber has experienced significant growth and achieved great accomplishments.

Del Mar a Lago Transporting a little magic.

wice a week a plane lands at the Salt Lake City International Airport with the freshest seafood imaginable. There’s shellfish from Chile, fish from Mexico and halibut and king crab from Alaska.
Our job, says Wilmer Arroyo, owner of Del Mar al Lago [From the sea to the lake], Salt Lake City’s premiere Peruvian restaurant of just three years, “is to use our traditional recipes to make the very best of that freshness.” Del Mar’s reputation for both the quality of its fish and the inventiveness of its modern Peruvian cuisine has propelled Arroyo and his business from a family to a financially sound corporation that ranks him as one of the top foreign restaurateurs in Utah.
UHCC Business Directory 2015 | utahhcc.com
Hispanic Business Spotlight
Arroyo and his family opened Del Mar in Salt Lake City on May 12, 2012, their intention to be the best cebichería in Utah. Although as Arroyo puts it they moved forward at the “speed of a tortoise” after three years of hard work and sacrifice, he’s poised to open a restaurant very soon in Park City, traditionally a much tougher and more expensive market to break into than the capital of the Beehive state.
20
“It’s a big jump to the next phase of our family business,” Arroyo says. He also plans to open a new location in Draper and expand his current location in Salt Lake to include take away. In the less than fashionable area of 2100 south and 300 West, Del Mar nevertheless quickly established itself as one of the top dining options in Salt Lake City, such that its 43-seating capacity had to be doubled just six months later to 90. Much of that growth has come from the Anglo community. While in its first month, Arroyo offered free tastings to their Latino friends, Del Mar began to fill up with a diverse crowd. “I was particularly surprised that the typical American was interested in eating cold ceviche for dinner,” he says. Now on any given night you will find Salt Lakers of all ethnicities lined up outside for a table and the opportunity to experience exquisite Peruvian food. Their menu has grown with their success and offers cold and hot traditional Peruvian food, such as Wilmer’s favorite, rice with seafood. The menu changes from week to week. “We only offer the freshest seafood so what’s on the menu is only what is being flown in fresh to Salt Lake.”
Indeed the history of Arroyo’s family is steeped in the lore and practice of Peruvian kitchens, so when he left Peru he brought with him an expectation and an understanding that his offspring would continue the culinary line. Wilmer worked as a chef throughout Europe for 12 years, while Perez trained at Le Cordon Bleu and previously worked at The St. Regis Deer Valley. While Arroyo views himself as a traditionalist and his son a modernist in their approaches to cuisine, together they have come up with winning recipes. Wilmer’s brother Luis Arroyo, another family chef, manages the kitchen and Arroyo’s other son is in California training to be a chef. The 23 employees at the Salt Lake restaurant are all from Latin American countries and pitch in and do what ever it takes to offer excellent service. For example, the beautiful art decorating the walls was created by their dessert chef. While décor has been something the Arroyo family has created in Salt Lake, for Park City they are importing a professional decorator from Peru to ensure a topnotch look for the Park City crowd. “We now have someone who can transport a little of the magic from my beautiful country here to Park City,” Arroyo says proudly. With the restaurant open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner, come Sunday the Arroyo family spends the day together resting. To maintain that family as the business has evolved into a corporation, Arroyo plans to pursue more family vacation times. This will include regular trips to Peru where he visits not only family but also tries the new restaurants in the capitol Lima. He talks to the new upcoming chefs and brings back new ideas and recipes. Despite his deep Peruvian roots, Arroyo has also cemented ties in Salt Lake City with other high profile foreign-born restauranteurs. Every Thursday he gets together with successful chefs like the owners of Takashi (Japanese) and Valter (Italian) to catch up and compare notes. “Its good to know what others are doing and to support each other,” Arroyo says. “We all have something different to offer the community and we all want it to be the best examples of our very own cuisine.” Part of his relationship with the local community is also about giving back, notably support of several nonprofits. “We all need that shoulder to lean on at some point, that push to move forward. Now its my turn to be that shoulder.”
Arroyo says there is no secret to his success, but rather that, “its simply sacrifice and passion for the culinary arts.”
With his star continuing to climb ever upwards both at the local and national level, in terms of reviews and awards, Arroyo is convinced he will succeed in the high-end volatile restaurant world of Park City. “Park City supports local business and keeps national chains on the outskirts,” he notes.
Part of his success he attributes to staying involved in his business, whether through his own hard work or that of his son Frederick Perez, both of whom are “hands on at all time,” Arroyo says. “There is always a family member supervising”.
He is convinced he will conquer the mountain world of Park City, “through passion, hard work, family values and love for the culinary arts. I know that whatever you do with love will turn out well.”

hen Silvia Norman started as a teller at Wells Fargo Bank 36 years ago she was struggling to get a foothold on a future. “The bank put me through school, believed in me and gave me mentors to see where I could go,” she says.
Today Silvia serves as Vice President and Latino Banking Manager. The way Silvia and Wells Fargo do business has changed the lives of many Hispanics along the Wasatch Front.

Norman was born in Argentina and immigrated to the United States when she was still a child. Her family, she says, was fleeing political and economic uncertainty. Like many Latinos, her native country only offered an unreliable banking system. As a result she felt it was her duty to ensure Hispanics in Utah understood, “That banks can be trusted. Banks, like Wells Fargo, are here to be the communitie’s partner and to help people succeed financially.”
22
Understanding this mistrust among many minorities, Wells Fargo asked Silvia to lead its Latino Banking Initiative more than a decade ago. Under her direction, Wells Fargo opened the state’s first Latino-focused branch in Utah in 2004. Money, she knew, was not something Hispanics traditionally feel comfortable discussing with strangers. Developing relationships with customers of both trust and mutual commitment would benefit all concerned. “Even though we are a national financial institution, our locations strive to reflect their surrounding community and offer a small town feel where clients know the personnel and feel free to ask for help when they need it,” Silvia says. “We work hard to understand the dynamics of our community and develop effective strategies for community outreach and engagement.” At the heart of her success at Wells Fargo lies her self-education in demystifying banking for Hispanic customers. It was a process she began early in her banking career: “A long time ago, when I first became a branch manager at Wells Fargo, Hispanic women came into my branch that couldn’t write a check. I started helping them in Spanish. Then I started going to churches and holding small classes, teaching them how to balance a check book and create budgets.” From there, she pursued partnerships with local schools, community centers and the Mexican Consulate and held financial literacy classes. Currently Wells Fargo employees go to the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City everyday, she says, “to help people understand and improve their finances. They are not there to sell Wells Fargo, they are there to help people in need.” Part of understanding her community’s needs led to
her pushing to remove barriers that many Hispanics have in regards to banking. One was the lack of required identification needed to open an account. Under Silvia’s leadership, Wells Fargo was the first financial institution in Utah to accept the Matrícula Consular as well as the state’s Driving Privilege Card. “I worked hard with our Region President to make sure that everyone could be eligible for an account,” Silvia said. Another barrier was language. Wells Fargo began recruiting bilingual employees. And because the bank promotes from within, many of these community members have had an opportunity to realize their career potential. “Over the past decade, we have hired many intelligent, bilingual professionals, and many of them are women who may have not had an opportunity to grow their careers in another profession,” Silvia says. To help team members reach their highest potential, senior leaders mentor internal teams. Latin Connection, the local Hispanic team that Silvia mentors, meets regularly to discuss education, internal jobs, and volunteer opportunities. The group regularly has inspirational guest speakers from all over the country, and they often provide volunteer service as part of their team building. “Each year, we pick a Latino focused non-profit that we support and help,” Silvia says.” In 2014 the Utah regional team donated $1.6 million to local nonprofits. “My company’s support and encouragement to go out and help in the community is priceless. It builds stronger and empowered team members. It also creates personal bonds with the people in our surrounding community and builds a relationship based on mutual trust”. Silvia sees this “reaching out” as crucial for her success and Wells Fargo’s as well. She recalls with gratitude the mentors at Wells Fargo who showed her the potential she had as a bilingual Latina. “They recognized my passion and helped me build on it by developing programs that helped the community and also helped our company.” From her beginnings as a Wells Fargo teller, she has built on her mentors’ belief in her to the point where she has given back to both her bank and her community perhaps more than anyone could have expected. “Thirty-six years later as a Vice President, I am delighted to still be giving back to my team members and the community,” she says.

Wells Fargo comenzó a reclutar a empleados bilingües.

My father died when I was two and my mother emigrated to the United States when I was four. I never felt like my mother abandoned us; it was more like she came to the US to put down the red carpet for our future arrival. When I was 14 my mother returned to Mexico to visit us and ask if we wanted to go to the US with her. I had heard many wonderful things about the American Dream. However, my brother said no and it wasn’t until my mother returned two years later that I convinced her that although my brother didn’t want to go I was ready to chase after that dream.

When we arrived in the States the dream wasn’t as shiny and beautiful as I had expected. My mother and I shared a two-bedroom apartment with another family and we were only able to use the bathroom and kitchen when they didn’t need it. I was able to get a job that eventually led me to Utah. Once I settled here, I got married and had a couple of kids. I built a house while juggling two jobs until I met a good friend who was to become my boss. He got a tire machine from someone that owed him money and while it sat there I thought I could put it to good use. My friend eventually gave it to me and for the next two years I ran a small shop out of my garage. People would call at all hours asking me to fix their flat tires. On weekends I could repair a car every half hour. By 1998, I was able to get my first real shop where I could work on 4 cars at a time. I also started selling used tires. Some customers would ask for new ones but I couldn’t afford to have a large stock. The only way I could compete with larger chains was by growing rapidly so I could buy
large quantities at a good price. And this is exactly what I did. You will now find Victors Tire shops throughout Salt Lake City, Lehi and Ogden. Eventually, we acquired a radio station, body shops and computer stores. Not all the businesses made it through the 2008 economic recession but the businesses that I managed survived. I was recently asked what is the secret to my success? I didn’t really know how to respond. It was a shock to me to realize that the only secret is hard work. The luck came with the hard work; the harder I work, the luckier I got. That was the day that I realize and saw how lucky I am. My question back to those who query how I became successful is, when will you start working on your dream?

Victor’s Tires Mi Historia
no sabía cómo responder.
Yo realmente

“As a Latina I am aware of the differences and pressures society puts on women but I don’t let that affect my life or my business.” Where she comes from, she says, has nothing to do with her success. “I worked hard in school and went on to get all the necessary licenses. I have since strived to strengthen my experiences in customer service and am dedicated to my business and my family. What my customers really appreciate is that they trust my credentials and my credibility.” Speaking fluent Spanish has been an asset, she says. “My Hispanic customers like and enjoy the option of speaking in their native tongue, especially when it comes to emotional issues like retirement and ensuring one’s family and business are cared for.” “When you start a business you have to be ready to wait. All businesses take time to grow and establish customers, but in the beginning that is hard to accept.” Another asset in any business is good employees. “When I opened my business I wish I had spent more time finding quality team members. It was a real challenge finding people who were licensed and good to work with. A month after I opened my business I found out I was pregnant and it became crucial to find team members I could rely on. Eventually I established a fantastic team, and today I am very lucky to have them, but in the beginning it was hard to find the right fit. Having strong team partners wasn’t only important for my work life, it was also important to find a reliable helping hand at home. My husband has been fantastic and I am also very fortunate in that my aunt looks after my daughter. It has been a blessing to know that when I have to go to work she is well taken care of. In the beginning, I would work shorter days, but when I had to be somewhere my daughter was in good hands, just like my business is with my terrific team.” For those wanting to start a business Smith
advices: “I think that being prepared, building a solid foundation through knowledge and doing research to understand your industry has been key to me and, be prepared to be a leader in your industry.” Knowing when to ask for help is often hard for entrepreneurs. “I have reached out to find mentors, others who are already successful in their businesses. I found my mentors by networking and doing research. When I decided that I wanted to go into the insurance industry, I looked for area managers and recruiters to put me in touch with the right people. I started college when I was 18 and it was then I realized the importance of having mentors. Back then it was establishing a relationship with those that would guide me and give me advice on how to deal with struggles of getting through college. Today it is experts in their field who would help me be a better business person.” Starting a business is hard work. “I started my business in August 2012 and it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. They say that starting a business takes time and sacrifice and it doesn’t happen over night. I completely agree! Eventually, if you work hard you get there. Today my business is finally succesful. Now I can predict and know what my business will look like in the future and what I need to do to get it there. This doesn’t just happen. A good road map is critical. I have a strong business plan and this is what helps me grow”. “Im patient and I have faith. I am strong and have great support. I have learned that the best thing you can do is turn to your sources for help, the minute you hesitate is when things start going downhill fast. I know that to really succeed I just have to keep working to get where I want and ask for help when I need it.”

Encontré a mis mentores creando redes e investigando. “

where Mike is now the Utah program director for the global charity, which provides resources for low-income families with extremely ill children. Sam Guevara, former foundation president, sums up the Somos philosophy as essentially seeking to realize the dreams of those who will be the next generation of Latino leaders. “Like a family, we give words of support and financial aid that in the end bonds us, and turns the success of one into the success of all. The future is held by those who believe in their dreams and take action.” The Somos foundation dates back to 2006 when Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce board decided to establish a foundation to mentor future Latino leaders. Every year the non-profit gives out around 60 scholarships to Latino students in Utah. Since its inception Somos has awarded over 400 students with scholarships totaling close to $2,000,000. The foundation was set up in part
because of the recognition of its founding members that Latino youth in particular, face a myriad of challenges when it comes to higher education. Many perspective students are first-generation Americans, or even undocumented residents, and do not have the first-hand experience or guidance from parents regarding the college experience in the U.S. Today, that need is bigger than ever with a total of 72 % of Latino students in Utah graduating from high school. Guidance – that crucial helping hand-is where Somos differs from other educational foundations. Guevara explains, “We bring these bright young Latinos into our family and we have a very extensive family network to support them.” That ‘family network’ includes entities like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter’day Saints, Westminster College, Zions Bank, Ibarra Foundation, University of Utah and Ronald McDonald House (RMH) amongst many others, which all share similar
core policies in terms of positioning a dedication to service as part of their culture. Support from these kinds of businesses has allowed Somos to fulfill its mission of supporting deserving youth with the assistance they need to succeed and in turn these young people learn how to give a hand up the next generation.
track to excel academically and in life.”
Schools, by and large, are impersonal. When students who don’t have a strong support network try to get in or advance in institutions of higher learning they are often faced with a brick wall. This is where Somos comes in, says Tim Carr. “The personal contacts that Somos offers these students open the doors and breaks down these barriers. This access to academic and personal resources is important for academic success”.
Robert Rendon, Senior Vice President CRA Director Zions Bank, has held leadership positions with the Somos Board for the past ten years. When speaking about the impact that the Somos Foundation has had on the community, the word he uses is “Huge.” According to Rendon, a Latino native of Salt Lake City, “Somos has had a significant and meaningful impact on the Utah postsecondary education community, the business community, and in the non-profit arena as well. Past and present Somos scholars are leaving their mark wherever they venture.”
In addition to networking, students have an opportunity to attend workshops, which include: diversity in the workplace, resume writing, leadership skills and financial planning. Thanks to board member and Gastronomy owner, Tom Guinney, a small group of scholars have had an opportunity to meet many of our State leaders during monthly private luncheons. Keith Atkinson, Somos board member and Hispanic Latino Relations for the office of Public Affairs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter’day Saints, sees the Somos scholars as “great gifts that our community needs”. Since joining the board, Atkinson has been impressed by the bonds that develop between the board members and the students. “Great relationships are developed in this association which is directed by people whose hearts are truly focused on working with Latino youth. These students are serious about education and with the support offered by Somos they are on
Finally, says Karen Desiree Romero, a one-time Somos scholar, the foundation gives far more than just monies for tuition. It gives you a network of people who share the same passion towards success. It doesn’t make achieving your goals easy, but it makes them possible”.

The Somos Academy is where students have an opportunity to benefit from mentoring and networking. Through the academy scholars have a chance to meet some of the most influential people in Utah in a non-intimidating setting. It is through these meetings that many students learn how to identify their own paths.
The support that the Somos board offers it’s scholars has influenced Mike Aguilar’s work at the RMH. In Utah, 53% of the families that RMH serves make below $30,000 per year. RMH offers them a place to stay near the hospital and an area of respite within Primary Children’s Hospital.

Somos isn’t only about academic success. It takes students to the next step, namely, Carr says, not only helping them get into college, but also guiding scholars until “they are gainfully employed, out in the community, and in turn, mentoring other young people”.
Atkinson concludes that, “Hispanic students are incredibly motivated and amazingly talented young men and women. We don’t know how far they will go, none of us do, but the caliber of kids is incredible and they deserve our support.”
Somos scholars like Romero and Aguilar attest to how the numerous foundation partnerships assure students receive the means to tackle the world of higher education and entry to top rate careers.

Real Possibilities is a trademark of AARP.
There’s no denying that life can be a real challenge at times. That’s why AARP continues its legacy of caring by combating hunger, helping people fight age discrimination, providing caregiver resources and helping people get back to work. Because when everyone reaches their full potential, society can reach its full potential. If you don’t think Real Possibilities when you think AARP, then you don’t know “aarp.” See what we’re doing to help at aarp.org
