MESSAGE FROM THE SOMOS PRESIDENT Dear Students, Parents, Donors and Sponsors – After more than 12 years supporting the community, it is a privilege for me to report that the Somos Foundation has raised more than 2 million dollars that have directly benefited more than 600 students and their families. Today, it is important that we pause once again to thank all the donors and sponsors who believe in the importance of education and help forge a better future for society. However, in addition to this much-deserved recognition and sincere thanks, I want to especially address the parents. Unfortunately, it is prevalent in our community that at times, our Hispanic youth is encouraged by parents to take a more proactive role in providing for their families– putting aside education as a priority–rather than motivating them and requiring them to study. While it is true that work and income are important and necessary, we should not confuse the immediate need with the possibility of a prosperous future. It is important that we talk to our friends and family, along with others we may know, and discuss the importance of “education.” Let’s broaden our horizons and spread the word to every person we meet everywhere, every day. I am sure people expect academics and business executives to talk about education, they expect the government to talk about it and even expect the youth to talk about it. However, what they probably do not expect is that you–the father and/or mother–talk about the importance of our children’s education. It is simple to understand why. The demand for more highly educated workers remains intense. Globalization and fast-paced technical change have wiped out many of the manufacturing jobs with which a worker with only a highschool degree could support a middle-class life. Let´s do something we, the Hispanic community, are good at… communicating! I would like to ask you from the bottom of my heart, to please become an ambassador and promoter of higher education. Thank you,
Alex Guzman Chairman of the Board of Directors, Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce & President, Somos Foundation
