Finding the best credit option for your business About one in three business owners use their own funds or personal credit for their business, according to a recent Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index survey. Yet as a business seeks to grow, obtaining business credit is essential and can help finance purchases, build a credit history, supplement cash flow, and preserve savings.

About one in three business owners use their own funds or personal credit for their business. So how do you choose the best credit option for your business? The type of business credit you need depends on your business goals and how much funding you need. The following are several common credit needs, and options available to address each one: Need a way to pay for everyday business expenses? When looking for a convenient way to pay for everyday business expenses and a smart alternative to cash, checks, and personal credit cards, business credit cards can be a good option. With a business credit card, you can separate your business from personal expenses and immediately pay for day to day business expenses. Need to make large seasonal purchases or cover payroll? Nearly every small business will face a time when it needs more cash than it has on hand. A business line of credit can provide fast, easy access to cash (which can bridge gaps in cash flow), and help supplement cash flow for business expansion, taxes, insurance, or other expenses.

* Wells Fargo is America’s #1 lender (Community Reinvestment Act government data, 2002 – 2014). * Wells Fargo is America’s #1 SBA 7(a) lender by both units and dollars (U.S. Small Business Administration data, federal fiscal year 2015). All credit decisions subject to credit approval. For SBA loan products, SBA eligibility is also required. © 2016 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. All rights reserved. (2536701_17933)

Want to expand your business or make a large equipment or vehicle purchase? For a specific business need, business term or equipment loans should be considered. Loans give businesses immediate access to funds and are ideal for business owners who want a flexible way to get a lump sum at a fixed or variable interest rate for a fixed period of time. There are many types of loans, including unsecured loans, secured equipment loans, real estate loans, and vehicle loans, and rates and terms vary. When evaluating lending options, you should also consider an SBA loan. Through government-guaranteed SBA loans, financial institutions are able to extend financing to a segment of creditworthy small business owners who may not be able to obtain a conventional loan or loan terms that meet their business needs. Business owners who are looking to buy real estate, acquire a new business or purchase equipment may find that an SBA loan offers more flexible terms than a conventional loan. SBA products include the SBA Express line of credit, and SBA 7(a) and SBA 504 loans. As business owners consider their credit options, they should consult with a banker to help determine the best option to meet the specific needs of their business. America’s #1 Small Business Lender and #1 SBA Lender*

President’s letter

A message from the UHCC President It is with great pleasure that we present the 2016 Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (UHCC) Business Directory. I’d like to take this opportunity to give a heartfelt thank you to Wells Fargo Bank for sponsoring this publication and for the indelible support given to our community over the years. The Wells Fargo Bank regional team are a leading corporate citizen, helping to create a more resilient and sustainable Hispanic business community in Utah. We are genuinely grateful for your support. With the generous support of companies like Wells Fargo, the UHCC has gone from a 10 member organization just 25 years ago to one of the most influential and largest diverse chambers in our region. Comprised of close to 100 corporate partners, 400 active members and more than 30 business events per year, our growth has been exponential since 2011. We have engaged in key partnerships, held the largest Hispanic business convention and expo in our region, organized a successful women’s leadership program, executed Poder del Cambio (power of change) motivational conferences, networking events, successful pairings, VIP seminars, and a top of the line series of technology events. All of this has been accomplished only as a joint effort with the hundreds of volunteers, interns, advisors, mentors, contributors, our esteemed staff, our exemplary board of directors and the support of companies like yours. Through a generous donation of labor, materials and space from Zions Bank, we now have staff offices and a small business hub with a training room and conference room equipped with internet access, a communications system, courtesy of Pro Tel Networks and printing resources, courtesy of Les Olson Company. In addition, we have cubicles for member use which are courtesy of Key Bank.

ith 17 percent of the United States’ population or 53 million people -- of Latino descent, wouldn’t you expect to be reflected in a significant Latino presence in American mainstream media? If you do, sadly you’d be disappointed.

We want newsroom leaders to not only think about the importance of diversity - we want them to talk about it with their staffs. Cristina Flores “

The UALJ was founded in 2012. Members have come and gone over the last four years - usually they’ve moved on in pursuit of better opportunities in other states, but the mission remains strong: “To ensure that Latinos are employed in local newsrooms and that news coverage reflects a fair and accurate portrayal of Latinos in the community”. But more inclusive newsrooms isn’t the only issue. A 501c3 non-profit, the UALJ also works to inspire a new generation of Latino journalists. It’s pursuing that by providing media scholarships to Hispanic students throughout the state. “We want newsroom leaders to not only think about the importance of diversity - we want them to talk about it with their staff,” explains UALJ President and Channel 2 (CBS) anchor, Cristina Flores. “As newsrooms try to work out how to grow their audience, we want them to consider the positive impact of including Latino voices in the stories they tell.” She cites the “positive impact” having Latinos in newsrooms to help grow their audiences. “Being more inclusive of communities that are often ignored in mainstream news coverage can only help newsrooms attract a diverse and engaged audience. This is important at a time when many mainstream news organizations are struggling to keep the attention of their public”, Flores concludes. “ ...As the United States becomes more diverse, the need

for diversity in media becomes even more apparent,.. Irene Caso

Talk to some of the few local Latino professional journalists in the Utah market and the impact of the lack of diversity in Utah’s newsrooms quickly becomes apparent. One familiar face in the local Spanish language media is Univision’s anchor, Irene Caso, “As the United States becomes more diverse, the need for diversity in media becomes even more apparent,” she says. “We

media that is reflecting a much more welcoming approach to diverse perspectives. Silvana Effio

Another well-known Latina, Telemundo’s anchor, Silvana Effio, agrees there is much to do. She says the lack of diversity in local media is troubling because, “it creates a failure to perform the mission of communication outlets, which is to represent the perspectives of the different communities that coexist in an area.” She notes that without Latino reporters or management in a television station, the integrity of journalistic content could be compromised by only portraying one point of view and blocking diverse perspectives. “In my experience, Hispanic journalists have to work twice as hard to show State leadership, including entrepreneurs, politicians, organizations and activists how important our coverage is to Latino families in our state.” But due to the efforts of the small group of professionals at UALJ, she says, “we are experiencing a change in local media that is reflecting a much more welcoming approach to diverse perspectives”. So what are possible solutions? Flores says that it is important that the media comes together to “work for fair and accurate coverage of our community and to promote the advancement of our members into positions of leadership in media and government”. Another issue is sources. The UALJ is working with non-Latino reporters to encourage them to use a wide variety of Hispanic sources to comment on all issues that affect the local population, rather than just the traditional “go-to” source who pops up in every story. In addition, the nonprofit wants to see reporters seek out minorities who may be specialists in their fields in order to reflect the growing diversity of those that live and work in Utah. Effio identifies one key factor in the work she and others do that will contribute to a brighter future, namely as journalists “to show the importance of diversity, by portraying the impact and the power that we have to contribute to the progress of the economy and quality of the life of our state’s population. As communicators we do this by being present, sharing our opinions, and questioning topics that could lead to improvement”. UALJ members want to ensure that everyone understands that diversity of opinion and perspectives are vital ingredients for lively and balanced media coverage. The media needs to reflect our values of independence and inclusiveness by ensuring that a broader diversity of voices are heard and seen in Utah’s media outlets.

The Changing faces of Utah Media

“...we are experiencing a change in local

UHCC Business Directory | utahhcc.com

The media’s nearly seeming disinterest in Latino representation ranges from the dearth of Latino voices and perspectives included in English-language news to the absence of substantive coverage of issues that matter most to Latinos. In response to this vacuum a small group of local journalists started the Utah Association of Latino Journalists (UALJ).

are extremely proud that for more than 60 years, Univision has been providing opportunities, skills and careers for Latinos in media and continue to invest in and expand these efforts.”

Mainstream media, including print and television news, fail to reflect the ethnic makeup of the communities they cover. And Utah is no different. In the Beehive state, where close to 20% of the population is Hispanic, yet, less than 3% of news media employees are Latino.

LOS NUEVOS ROSTROS DE LOS MEDIOS DE UTAH

By Patricia Dark

Big city banking with a small town feel, a perfect fit for Utah Sponsored

From helping you buy your first home to financing your own business, local community banks inevitably play a key role in your success. Key, being the optimal word in the case of KeyBank. KeyBank has been in Utah for over a century and during that time has established itself as both a powerful brand name and a thriving financial institution in Utah life.

KeyBank may be big but part of that growth has come through pursuing an approach to become a natural extension of the neighborhoods they serve. “KeyBank’s value proposition is through our Community Banking model,” explains Gloria Salazar, a team member at KeyBank’s Sandy branch. Although the bank has a national footprint, they focus on a strong bankcustomer relationship that is crucial to the financial health of any family or business. It is at the community level that a national bank that offers all the “big” bank capabilities can nevertheless still act and feel like a community bank, “providing community banking services where our clients are not just our customers, they are our friends”. Salazar says.

GLORIA SALAZAR Key Bank Branch Manager “As a large bank with a community bank feel, we spend the time necessary to understand our clients and build partnership relationship,” and this is the key, to KeyBank’s success. Salazar explains.

“ Our Hispanic friends and neighbors are a very important part of our Utah economy. We are proud to be a community partner with the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and supporting them in their mission..

Gloria Salazar

It’s that ability to juggle the needs of clients of all sizes, while balancing a wide array of services with that personal touch that keeps customers coming back; that helps explain why KeyBank’s brand has developed so much value in this mid western state, where the homespun philosophy of the client is always first still rings true. Another key factor is that they understand the need to put down significant cultural roots, so that the bank employees understand the values of the customers it serves. “Unlike other large banks, KeyBank places precedence on a local decision making authority and sets a strategy that is centered in Utah culture and values,” Salazar says. Utah KeyBank President Terry Grant says that he and his team are passionate about focusing on their diverse local community. “Since 1884 when our bank began here in Utah, KeyBank and its predecessor banks have prided themselves in supporting all of the citizens of Utah.” As the president of KeyBank in Utah, he expresses deep pride in how the bank provides

“Our Hispanic friends and neighbors are a very important part of our Utah economy. We are proud to be a community partner with the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and supporting them in their mission.” In the last 20 years, Utah and particularly the Wasatch Front has seen its minority populations, most notably Hispanics, mushroom in size to account for approximately 20 percent of the State’s population. In recognizing the diverse business community that surrounds and indeed depends on KeyBank’s branches, Grant has found that it is imperative that “we as a financial institution maintain relevancy and provide the services that the growing community needs. To this end we have created business seminars and workshops to engage the community in which we live, work, and serve”. Which is why Grant and his team have found in organizations such as the UHCC a business that both reflects their business values and with whom they can pursue mutual interests. While on the one hand the UHCC works hard to strengthen its community through networking and business promotion, the UHCC in turn does what it can to support the efforts of businesses like KeyBank who donate both financially as well as through volunteerism to the communities from whom they draw their customer base. As a full service bank, Key Bank prides itself on serving a very diverse clientele from all walks of life, while at the same time meeting the needs of the immense variety of industries that power the economic engine of growth that is Utah’s success story. On the business side, Salazar explains, “We have many very large businesses that are our clients. However, our primary focus is the small to medium sized businesses.” Those smaller businesses benefit from a wide range of products and services, she continues, such as lines of credit, equipment lease, commercial real estate, cash management services (e.g. business checking, purchase and credit cards, sweep accounts), investments and much more.

Javier’s Mexican Food - Ogden Running after the American dream Javier Chavez’s journey from a small family farm in Zacatecas, Mexico to northern Ogden, Utah and his fulfillment of the American dream was built on nothing more than a pair of sneakers. The onetime Mexican national track champion came to his adopted hometown of Ogden through a running scholarship from Weber State in 1977 and has built himself a business empire of seven Mexican restaurants across the northern end of the Wasatch Front that reflect both his business acumen and his positive approach to life.

s the second oldest of 12 siblings, growing up in Zoicote, Zacatecas, part of the roots of his passion for Mexican cuisine might well be traced back to his grandmother and mother grinding corn to make tortillas.

Life wasn’t easy back then. He and his young wife Amada worked in restaurants bussing tables and washing dishes, saving up what dollars they could put aside until they had enough to open his first restaurant in Ogden in 1991. Chavez learned his cooking skills from the first years, working in the kitchens of a seafood and steak house and then a Mexican restaurant called Casa Diego. And so, in February 1991, began Chavez’s new journey, opening “Javier’s,” as his Javier’s Authentic Mexican on 29th Street in Ogden is informally called. Since then he’s opened six more restaurants, two in Ogden, and one each in Harrisville, Layton, Farmington and Logan.

JAVIER CHAVEZ owner of Javier’s Mexican food “I found myself through running,” he told the Salt Lake Tribune in 2010, when he was heralded at the annual Cesar Chavez Peace and Justice award banquet as much for helping young people from minority communities pursue their business dreams as for his own entrepreneurial skills.

It’s an individual sport. I tell these kids, if you work hard, you can become something. Javier Chavez - Javier’s Mexican food

Javier’s mexican Food - Ogden

Chavez’s abilities as a runner took him all the way to almost joining the Mexican running team competing in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He missed qualification by just a split-second, but despite that disappointment, was guided by a BYU track coach to Weber State, for whom he shone as a track star.

While you won’t necessarily find the food you’d be served at a table in a local eatery in Zacatecas, authentic Mexican food, Chavez says, is food that inevitably reflects the ingredients and flavors of the region you’re from. And at Javier’s, his menu reflects not only the flavors of his and Amada’s roots in central and northern Mexico respectively, but also dishes that ultimately are “uniquely our own.” His client base, he says, historically has always been typically Americans, rather than Hispanics. One of his mentors told him early

on, he recalls, “If you go with Mexican food, if you make it for puro Mexicans, you’ll die of hunger.” That’s because, he says, “Mexicans don’t go out to eat.” It’s both a question of limited financial resources in some cases, and also that Mexicans “like to cook at home, we don’t go out.” So he caters his menu to his market, leaving the more Mexican-specific dishes like menudo, pozole and tacos de cabezas, aside in favor of enchiladas, chile verde, for which his chain is justly famous for its superb green sauce, and tacos to name a few classic, tasty rather than spicy dishes. Indeed his tacos, enchiladas and nachos pull in customers from both college towns and local businesses, in awe of his extensive menu. His menu quirkily celebrates both his pride for his home country, with a plate called Zacatecas comida grande, (a cheese enchilada, chile relleno and tamale), while also borrowing from a little Mexican history, with a Pancho Villa combo (tamales and shredded beef tacos) and a Zapata Mexican dinner (cheese enchiladas). And unlike many Mexican restaurants, he offers a wide variety of desserts that nevertheless reflect a little of the local culture, ranging from sopapillas (scones) with honey butter for those with an Anglo sweet tooth to Mexican fried ice cream. Even with so many restaurants stretching across the northern end of the Wasatch Front, the roots of Chavez’s success ultimately lie in his faith in family and the American dream. When visiting his Ogden restaurants, he can be found enthusiastically greeting diners as if they were family, adding that essential human touch to the menus of authentic Mexican food that so proudly bear his name..

Javier Chavez - Javier’s Comida Mexicana

Javier’s Comida Mexicana - Ogden
