Welcome Welcome to University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW NHS Trust) Foundation Trust members Newsletter which features the Trusts third Annual Quality Account information. I hope you find it useful in showing how we performed in 2011/12 and what our priorities are for the next 12 months. Our mission is to Care, Achieve and Innovate by: • delivering safe, high quality and evidence based patient care • developing excellence in research and education • enhancing efficiency and promoting our high quality service locally and nationally. The three priorities we focused on last year were picked because we knew it would make a big difference to the experience of the majority of our patients: the management of sepsis, looking after patients’ nutritional needs and improving care for patients with dementia. I am proud of the work we have undertaken in these areas which are discussed in more detail in this Quality Account, but includes an awareness and training campaign for staff on sepsis, the appointment of a consultant to strengthen the Nutrition Support Team and the opening of our Memory Lane and Forgetme-not Lounge for patients with dementia. We have also strengthened our Patient Engagement team to focus on the experience of patients and their loved ones. Our engagement team as well as being led by a director and incorporating Patient Involvement, PALS and Complaints, also

includes Bereavement Services and the department of Spiritual Care. This is because we recognise that having a relative in hospital usually impacts on the family around them and they may also require support. The Patient Experience and Engagement Group have now been established for more than a year and discuss projects which enhance not only patients’ experience but the environment in which they are treated. For example in the last 12 months this has included improving the information on outpatient letters, installing benches so patients and visitors can sit outside and launching a pilot on the information on ward notice boards. Two members of the Trust Board (an executive and nonexecutive member) sit on this group and the minutes from the meetings are also shared with the Trust Board. Trust Board members also take part in Patient Safety Walkarounds where they will visit wards unannounced to see the quality of care being provided and Patient Stories are given to the Trust Board so the Executive Team can hear firsthand about the experiences of their patients. As well as monitoring the opinions of our local community through social media and local media outlets, we also have a Patients Council, 5,000 public Foundation Trust members and a number of schools which we communicate with regularly as well as our local MPs, LINks and Health and Overview Scrutiny Committees. As a result to listening to our patients, visitors and local communities we reduced car parking prices at University Hospital from July 1, 2011 and
have also begun work focusing on congestion at the same site as we know this is an issue which causes stress to all involved. All patients and visitors are encouraged to take part in the Trust Impressions survey which allows them to give feedback broken down to ward level. This is shared with ward management to allow them to act on all comments they receive, whether it is positive or negative. Currently we receive approximately 1,000 responses a month to our survey and this means when Midlands and East Strategic Health Authority (MESHA) asked acute Trusts to start asking their inpatients whether they would recommend their hospital from April 2012, the Trust was already one step ahead. The Trust is also proud to be an early user of the NHS Patient Safety Thermometer and is one of the few acute Trusts working directly with MESHA to achieve its aim to eliminate avoidable grade 2, 3 and 4 pressure ulcers by December 2012. In addition to all this work, during 2011/12 many staff have been nominated for various prestigious awards:

Strategic News • Consultant Ophthalmologist Sergio Pagliarini was shortlisted for one of The Macular Disease Society’s 2011 national awards for Clinical Services of the Year after being nominated by a patient.
Welcome to new members of the Executive Team
• The Research and Development team was shortlisted for the HSJ Awards 2011 for embedding a culture of clinical research at Trust level. • The cross-disciplinary team who managed and implemented the VTE assessment programme and tool across the Trust won the Public Sector Project of the year category in the UK IT Industry Awards 2011 and the Healthcare IT Award in the 2011Health Business Awards and was shortlisted for the 2011 EHealth Insider Awards for the 'best use of IT to promote patient safety category'. We will continue our improvements in the areas identified in the 2010/2011 Quality Account and this year, after listening to our patients and stakeholders we have chosen another three areas to prioritise: • Patient Safety - Elimination of avoidable pressure ulcers • Clinical Effectiveness - Effective discharge from hospital • Patient and Staff Experience - Using real time patient feedback to affect change There is no doubt it has been a difficult year and some tough decisions have had to be made. We know the next 12 months will bring more changes to the NHS and we need to be prepared to show strong leadership and have the difficult discussions needed to ensure that we have a NHS that our patients and staff deserve in the 21st Century. I hereby state that to the best of my knowledge the information contained within the Quality Account is accurate.

“Firstly I would like to say how pleased I am to be joining University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust during a time of change for the NHS.
“Mark Radford has now taken up the role of Chief Nurse for the Trust and I would like to take this opportunity to officially congratulate him on his new role.
UHCW has a national reputation for outstanding patient care and I am proud to be joining not only as the Chief Medical Officer but also as a Consultant Gynaecologist. Your reputation for providing first class care as well as the significant amount of research and innovation attracted me to wanting to work here and in the few days I have been here I can see for myself how that reputation is so truly deserved. Thank you for the very warm welcome I have received and I look forward to meeting you.”

Strategic News Christine Watts, Chief Marketing Officer, to leave for exciting new post Christine Watts, Chief Marketing Officer at UHCW since 2009 is leaving the Trust in September 2012.
Maggie Allen New Medical Director for Education We are delighted to announce that Maggie Allen, consultant rheumatologist, has been appointed to succeed Ian Fraser in the post of Associate Medical Director for Education. Maggie has had a long involvement with educational activities in the Trust, the Medical School and the Region, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She brings youth and enthusiasm which will be crucial to her fulfilling this new role. We have no doubt that everyone will wish to congratulate her and welcome any opportunity to help her continue to develop UHCW as a major teaching hospital.
Christine, who currently has responsibility for public relations, communications, engagement, ICT and service redesign teams will be taking up her new role as an Executive Director for Communications and Engagement at Mid-Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust. In the last two years Christine’s teams have been nominated for 14 awards and won two. Christine said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the last three years in Coventry and Rugby. “During this time I have had exciting opportunities to lead on projects which improve patient experience which I am incredibly proud of such as the dementia lounge and memory lane, improving facilities for bereaved family members and using volunteers to ask our patients how we can improve.
“This does not include the complex behind the scenes work which the public often don’t see such as internal staff campaigns on health issues and maintaining our highly complex IT systems so appointments, operations, care and information take place smoothly. “I will be taking these experiences with me in my new role and would like to thank those I have worked with over the last three years and who welcomed me into the NHS.” Christine’s responsibilities have increased over her time with us to reflect her skills and ability to deliver. While I will be sorry to see her go, I understand that she wishes to get more experience within different organisations within the NHS. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all her hard work and the difference she has made to the Trust since 2009.

Paving the way forward - Strategy for UHCW NHS Trust. This will guide our future direction and commitment to meet the health needs for the people we serve.
UHCW gives insight into clinical research and development during Research Day University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) held its first Research Open Day to show the public and patients the importance of clinical research and see the extensive research facilities. The event in the main reception of University Hospital Coventry on Friday 18th May had displays, activities and information on health research, including work on metabolism, diabetes and cancer. The event, to celebrate International Clinical Trials Day, was also used to raise awareness of the trials that are taking place in the Trust. Currently, the Trust is taking part in more than 300 clinical trials and research studies. Those that take part are helping to improve the NHS for future patients. Dr Deborah Griggs, Research Portfolio Development Manager said: “We wanted to show people the research we are doing to improve the current and future health of patients. Research helps us find out which treatments and medicines work best. The Trust is involved in world class research and the developments here have spearheaded some of the innovations that people in the medical field now take for granted. “The Open Day allowed staff to give tours of the facilities at UHCW so that the public were able to go behind the scenes and look at areas that ordinarily they would not see. I look forward to the next one in 2013.”

The traditional handover of patient’s information between shifts can be time-consuming but the Trust has been piloting an alternative since last year that has enabled nurses to reap benefits including spending more time with patients.

Pilates fan Penny has the first of its kind hip replacement Thanks to an innovative hip replacement performed at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby. Penny Amis, 63 from Lighthorne, Warwickshire can enjoy one of her many favourite pastimes of Pilates 2-3 times a week again. Mr Pedro Foguet, Orthopaedic Consultant at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW), was asked to trial this new prosthetic hip for the first time in the UK. This device combines a shorter stem with a modular (interchangeable) neck. The stem is several inches shorter than ones that have been traditionally used in the past and for this reason if a patient needs to have it revised (redone) it is easier to remove with less damage to the surrounding bone. The modular neck means that it is possible to restore a normal or near normal shape of the hip joint which should result in a better function. Mr Foguet said: “Over the past couple of years I have increasingly

performed hip replacements on individuals who are younger and more active than in the past. Patients like Penny are more likely to outlive their hip replacements and will require a revision in the future, and because this technique causes less bone damage it ensures patients recover more quickly.” Penny has suffered from arthritis of the hip for many years but after her latest hip operation she is able to enjoy her favourite pastimes again. Penny said: “Mr Foguet and his team have been wonderful, I have had both my hips replaced now under their care and my experience has been faultless. “When I was first told I would need a hip operation I researched where I could receive the best care through Choose and Book. The care I have received from the Orthopaedic team at UHCW has exceeded my expectations.
Foundation Trust Members’ Magazine
“Mr Foguet explained the new procedure, using the smaller stem and the modular neck in a way both my husband and I could understand. I have recovered a lot quicker this time after this innovative new procedure.” Penny has a very busy life so thanks to her new lease of life she is enjoying treading the boards again with Side by Side Theatre company in Warwick where she helps direct, dance and act with adults with learning disabilities. She is also enjoying her Pilates classes, walking her dog and helping run the family business again after her successful hip operation. Mr Foguet will continue to trial this technique, which is being introduced in many other hospitals around the UK and Europe. UHCW carry out over 800 hip replacements every year at University Hospital, Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

and interpreting tests such as x-rays and blood tests. We then work alongside the medical team in managing such patients.
Clinical

We possess advanced and extended clinical skills such as arterial blood gas sampling and analysis and are qualified Independent Nurse Prescribers.
We review new admissions to St Cross - either referrals from GPs, A&E or transfers from University Hospital, this involves a complete physical assessment and ordering
We are part of the cardiac arrest team and are all qualified Advanced Life Support providers for emergency situations throughout the hospital.
Many people have never heard of Advanced Nurse Practitioners so we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to who we are and what we do here at Rugby.
Quality As we are clinically based we are able to identify areas for improvement in services and processes that improve patients’ experiences. We are involved in clinical guideline writing and are also actively involved in quality initiatives. We act as a clinical role model for nursing staff and are available for advice and assistance for all aspects of care for both medical and nursing staff.
