TALES FROM THE ANCIENT GATEWAY The Heritage and Significance of Historic Jeddah In the heart of Saudi Arabia lies a city steeped in history and culture, a city where the past and present merge into a rich tapestry of architectural grandeur and multiculturalism. This is Historic Jeddah, the ancient gateway to Makkah. Once upon a time, along the eastern shores of the Red Sea, rose a city that would become the cradle of a unique architectural style. Historic Jeddah, since its establishment in the 7th century AD, blossomed as a major port, channeling goods to Mecca and welcoming pilgrims from distant lands. This influx of cultures and wealth led to the creation of imposing tower houses and coral stone constructions, which became the heart of Jeddah’s architectural identity. The city’s tower houses, built by its mercantile elites in the late 19th century, are a marvel to behold. These structures combine the traditional Red Sea coastal coral building techniques with influences from across the Indian Ocean trade routes. The large wooden Roshan (latticed balconies) that decorate these houses are not just artistic expressions but also ingenious adaptations to the hot and humid climate of the Red Sea. Inside, the absence of courtyards and the presence of rooms rented to pilgrims speak volumes about

the city’s historic role and commercial vibrancy. Historic Jeddah was more than just a port; it was a melting pot of cultures and traditions. The city's cosmopolitan nature was its true essence, where Muslims from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East came together, creating a vibrant and diverse community. This cultural mosaic was a result of Jeddah’s symbolic role as the gate to Makkah for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. The city’s streets and markets were alive with the sounds and colors of different languages, cuisines, and customs, painting a picture of unity in diversity. The traditional souks, running east-west from the sea to Makkah Gate, were not just marketplaces but cultural hubs where pilgrims from various countries interacted, traded goods, and shared ideas. The Ribats and Wakalas, traditional rest houses for pilgrims, were teeming with stories of long journeys and spiritual quests. The architectural and urban landscape of Historic Jeddah is a testament to this intangible heritage, a heritage that has shaped the very identity of the city.

WHISPERS OF THE WIND THE ROSHANS OF OLD JEDDAH In the heart of the ancient city of Jeddah, the Roshans, ornate wooden bay windows, stand as timeless guardians of history, culture, and ingenious architecture. These iconic elements of the Hejazi architectural tradition not only added beauty to the buildings but also served a critical role in adapting to the hot and humid climate of the Red Sea region.

A Blend of Aesthetics and Functionality: The Roshan, a distinctive element in the façades of traditional houses in western Saudi Arabia, symbolizes the essence of Hejazi heritage. Made primarily from wood, these window types are not just architectural marvels; they are also a testament to the ingenuity of past craftsmen and designers. The Roshan's design philosophy encompasses seating function, privacy, visual continuity, light utilization, and shade exploitation, making them an integral part of Hejazi architecture.

Cultural and Aesthetic Significance The origins of the term 'Roshan' are debated, with some suggesting Persian, Indian, or Arabic roots. These windows were more than mere openings; they narrated stories of the diverse cultures that influenced Jeddah over centuries. Rawasheen, as they are known in plural, were not only distinctive to Jeddah but were also seen in various Islamic cities across the Middle East. The design, size, and decoration of each Roshan reflected the owner’s taste and wealth, contributing to the unique visual character of old Jeddah.

Natural Ventilation and Climate Adaptation In the humid and hot climate of Jeddah, the design of Roshans played a crucial role in creating comfortable living conditions. These structures facilitated cross ventilation, allowing sea breezes to maintain continuous air circulation inside the houses. The strategic positioning of Roshans and their design, with shutters and ornamental patterns, helped cool the interiors and favored air circulation. The high placement of these windows acted as "wind catchers," exploiting the natural movement of hot air to draw cooler air into the buildings.

FROM BEDOUIN ROOTS TO URBAN TABLES The Evolution of Saudi Culinary Traditions Saudi Arabia, a land with a rich historical tapestry and diverse cultural influences, offers a culinary landscape as varied and vibrant as its heritage. From the bustling streets of Riyadh to the serene mountains of Asir, each region brings its unique flavors to the table, creating a gastronomic mosaic that is distinctly Saudi. Historically, Saudi cuisine has been a reflection of its people’s nomadic and agricultural past. Traditional dishes like Kabsa and Aseeda were born out of necessity and resourcefulness, utilizing locally available ingredients such as rice, wheat, and meats like chicken, lamb, and camel. Spices and herbs, often traded over ancient routes, became integral, adding depth and character to these dishes. The Bedouin influence is profound, with dishes like Harees and Madfoon showcasing cooking techniques adapted to desert life. These methods, like slow cooking in a pit or using a simple pot over an open flame, are not just culinary practices but a celebration of the Saudi heritage. The coastal regions, particularly the Eastern Province and cities like Jeddah, introduce a different palate. Seafood dishes such as Sayadieh, embody the maritime history of these areas. The use of spices and rice in these dishes speaks of the trade routes that once connected Saudi Arabia to the world, bringing in flavors from Africa, Asia, and beyond. Modern Saudi cuisine is an evolving story. The Kingdom’s Vision 2030 has opened doors to global gastronomic influences, ushering in a new era in Saudi dining. International cuisines are increasingly interwoven with traditional Saudi recipes, creating innovative fusion dishes that still pay homage to their roots. Restaurants in cosmopolitan cities like Riyadh and Jeddah now offer a blend of global and local flavors, catering to a diverse and cosmopolitan populace. Yet, amidst this culinary evolution, the core of Saudi cuisine remains anchored in its traditions. The communal nature of Saudi eating - sharing large platters, the culture

of hospitality, and the emphasis on seasonal and fresh ingredients - continues to define its food culture. Traditional coffee ceremonies, dates, and sweet delicacies like Baklava and Maamoul remain central to Saudi hospitality and celebrations.

CHILLY CHARMS Winter Wonders of Saudi Arabia Winter is a time when the kingdom reveals its hidden natural beauty, inviting both locals and visitors to explore and appreciate a different side of Saudi Arabia. Whether seeking snow or a mild winter escape, the kingdom has something unique to offer, making it an increasingly popular winter destination. One of the most enchanting winter experiences in Saudi Arabia is the snowfall in the Tabuk region. Jabal Al-Lawz, or the “Almond Mountain,” becomes a winter wonderland, attracting visitors to its snow-covered peaks. The sight of snow in the desert is a rare and mesmerizing phenomenon, offering opportunities for snowball fights, sledding, and simply enjoying a winter landscape that contradicts the typical desert imagery associated with Saudi Arabia.

Desert Adventures in RIYADH Winter is also the ideal season to explore the desert near Riyadh. The cooler temperatures make it perfect for desert safaris, camping (kashta), and exploring the sand dunes. The Edge of the World, a part of the Tuwaiq escarpment, is a popular destination offering breathtaking views of the vast desert – a must-visit for those seeking a unique outdoor adventure.

Snow in the Northern Deserts The Green Mountains of ASIR The Asir region, particularly the city of Abha, presents a different kind of winter charm. Nestled in the mountains, Abha is known for its cool climate, misty mountains, and lush green landscapes. The Asir National Park becomes a verdant retreat, ideal for hiking, picnicking, and enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Winter here is mild and refreshing, a stark contrast to the summer heat.

18

Apart from Tabuk, other northern areas like Al Jawf and the Northern Borders region occasionally experience snowfall. These areas offer a serene winter landscape, a stark contrast to their usual arid climate. For those seeking a tranquil escape, these regions provide a unique opportunity to witness a softer, quieter side of the Saudi desert.

WINTER ACTIVITY Kashta, a term synonymous with camping in Saudi Arabia, is an experience deeply rooted in the country's culture, offering a unique blend of tradition and adventure. This age-old practice, particularly popular during the winter season, is more than just camping; it's a celebration of Saudi Arabian heritage, landscape, and communal living.

Embracing the Desert and Beyond In the vast expanse of the Saudi desert, particularly in regions like Al-Jazeerah in the east, kashta is a cherished activity. Enthusiasts set out for the desert, setting up camps for several days, where they indulge in activities like hunting, cooking, and socializing around campfires. The kashta experience in the dunes involves sleeping under the stars, wrapped up to stay warm against the surprisingly chilly desert nights.

Cultural Immersion and Activities Kashta is not just about setting up a tent; it's an immersive cultural experience. Campers often saddle up camels, savor local food and drinks, and gather around a firepit while traditional music plays, creating an ambiance that's quintessentially Arabian. The campsites often become hubs of cultural exchange, with music, storytelling, and traditional Saudi hospitality taking center stage.

A Night Under the Stars An integral part of the kashta experience is the connection with nature. Campers often find themselves gazing up at the winter constellations, adding an element of astronomy to the adventure. This connection with the natural world is a reminder of the Saudi people's historical bond with the land and the skies, a key aspect of their nomadic heritage.

This expansion includes domestic routes to Abha and Tabuk, and international routes to Dubai, Amman, Baghdad, Istanbul, and Ankara, complementing existing routes to Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Cairo. Coinciding with this expansion, the Pilgrim Experience Program aims to enrich pilgrims' journeys to Madinah. The program focuses on providing world-class facilities, improved infrastructure, and digitized services to enhance the spiritual experience of pilgrims visiting the Two Holy Mosques. Key initiatives include the digitization of services, like e-visas and the Haramain high-speed train, which simplifies transportation between key cities and holy sites, and the development of historical Islamic sites to enrich the cultural and spiritual journey of pilgrims. Flynas' new routes and the Pilgrim Experience Program collectively enhance accessibility to Madinah, making it easier for pilgrims and tourists alike to experience the spiritual and cultural richness of this historic city.
