2024 - THE YEAR OF THE CAMEL In 2024, Saudi Arabia celebrates the 'Year of the Camel,' a testament to the profound connection between the camel and the Saudi heritage. Revered as the "ship of the desert," camels have been integral to life in the arid expanses of the Arabian Peninsula, providing sustenance, transportation, and companionship to its inhabitants.

Encounters with Camels Across Saudi Arabia Camels might not be a common sight in bustling cities, but they are a familiar and unforgettable presence along the smaller highways and in the countryside. They serve as reminders of the timeless Arabian landscape. Whether hired for a trek or cared for by families alongside other livestock, camels remain a resourceful asset. Their wool, milk, meat, and leather are utilized to the fullest, echoing the sustainable practices of the Bedouin lifestyle.

The history of camel riding in Saudi Arabia is as significant as the animals themselves. Known as the "ships of the desert," camels were the engines of ancient caravan routes, carrying goods and people to significant trade hubs like Makkah and Medina. 4

SAUDIS AND THEIR CAMELS

The bond between Saudis and their camels is one of deep affection and mutual respect, deeply rooted in the Bedouin way of life. Beyond their value in festivals and races, camels are esteemed as part of the family, playing a significant role in daily life. They are companions in the truest sense, sharing in the triumphs and tribulations of desert life. This bond is exemplified in the way camels are integrated into the family unit, often cared for with the same attention as one would give to a cherished pet. In Saudi culture, the camel is more than an animal; it is a cultural icon that represents resilience, endurance, and grace under pressure. These traits resonate with the Saudi people, mirroring their own journey through history. The camel’s presence is a comforting constant, a silent witness to the changing times, and a reminder of the enduring traditions that define the Saudi identity. The significance of this bond is also reflected in the economic and social facets of Saudi life. Camels contribute to the economy, not only through the camel-related businesses but also by being a symbol of Saudi heritage that draws tourists and cultural enthusiasts from around the world. Socially,

camels are a centerpiece in traditional gatherings, where stories of their journeys and the adventures they have shared with their owners are often told and retold, weaving the camels into the fabric of Saudi oral history. This deep connection is perhaps most touching in the simple, everyday interactions between the camels and their owners. The care with which a Saudi owner tends to their camel, ensuring it is well-fed, healthy, and comfortable, is a sight that captures the essence of this unique relationship. It is not uncommon to witness the gentle calling of a camel by its owner, the shared moments of rest under the shade of a palm, or the proud presentation of a camel to visitors, each of these instances reinforcing the strong bond that has been formed over generations. As Saudi Arabia steps into the future, the camel remains a symbol of the nation’s heritage, a living connection to the past, and a cherished member of the present community. The 'Year of the Camels' will undoubtedly be a time to celebrate this enduring relationship, one that continues to shape the heart and soul of Saudi culture.

The Magnificent Turaif District and Salwa Palace

6

The Turaif District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, is a treasure trove of history and culture located in the heart of Saudi Arabia. This article delves into the enchanting world of the Turaif District and its crown jewel, the Salwa Palace, to unveil their significance and allure to the modern tourist.

The Historical Significance of Turaif District Nestled in Al-Dir'iyah, northwest of Riyadh, the Turaif District is steeped in history. Founded in the 15th century, it was the first capital of the Saudi Dynasty and played a pivotal role in the Arabian Peninsula's political and religious landscape. The district's architectural brilliance, manifested in the Najdi style, along with its palaces and urban ensemble, make it a vital witness to the region’s past.

The Salwa Palace: A Symbol of Royal Elegance The largest standing structure in Turaif, the Salwa Palace, was the royal residence of Mohammed bin Saud, the founder of the first Saudi state. Serving as the administrative heart of Diriyah, this palace was where critical political, business, and social discussions shaped the nascent Saudi state. Covering 10,000 square meters and spanning three floors, it is divided into seven sections, including a reception area, administrative units, a mosque, a majlis (seating area), a school, the Diriyah museum, and a public gathering space.

G AT E WAY T O S A U D I -J A N 2 0 2 4

A Journey Through Time Visitors to the Salwa Palace are transported back in time, walking through courtyards, alleyways, and towers that showcase the quintessential Najdi architecture. The palace's mud-brick construction, using natural materials like adobe, narrates the story of traditional Saudi life. One can explore the intricate courtyards, the grandeur of the Diwan, and the beautifully preserved majlis, where leaders once convened.

The Restoration and Preservation of Turaif The restoration of the Turaif District, part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, has been meticulous. Under UNESCO guidelines, the mud-brick city was restored to showcase materials and artifacts from the Kingdom's royal, social, and cultural past. This restoration not only preserves the historical integrity of the site but also enhances its appeal as a destination for global tourists.

A Glimpse into the Future of Saudi Tourism The Diriyah Gate Development Authority's efforts have transformed Turaif and Diriyah into a hub for cultural and entertainment experiences, reflecting the region's traditions and hospitality. The Turaif District is at the heart of the Diriyah Gate gigaproject, a $50 billion plan to boost tourism and showcase history, lifestyle, and cultural heritage through galleries, museums, restaurants, hotels, and educational facilities.

Echoes of Unity Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Mosque The At-Turaif Grand Mosque, now known as the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Mosque, stands as a historic icon of unity and faith. As one of the largest mosques of its time, it was a center for community and spirituality. Today, visitors can walk through the mosque, appreciating its restored beauty and contemplating the role it played in shaping the Saudi state. The mosque's architecture, with its traditional Najdi designs, not only reflects the artistry of the era but also provides a serene space for reflection and connection with history.

Diriyah Museum A Treasure Trove of Saudi Heritage Housed within the storied walls of the Turaif District, the Diriyah Museum is a sanctuary of knowledge and history. Visitors to the museum can wander through exhibitions that detail the rise of the Saudi state, highlighted by artifacts that tell tales of the kingdom's founding fathers. Each display is carefully curated to provide an educational and engaging experience, making the Diriyah Museum a must-visit for those looking to understand Saudi Arabia's cultural and political heritage.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SAUDI ARABIAN COFFEE

Saudi Arabian coffee, also known as Al-Qahwa, is not only a traditional drink but also an emblem of hospitality and an important economic asset in the region. The significance of coffee in Saudi Arabia's culture and society cannot be understated, as it is considered an essential part of any social gathering, event, or meeting.

Cultural and Historical Context Coffee was widespread in the Yemeni region of Arabia by the 15th century and spread to other parts of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, within the next hundred years. It became integral to social interactions, not just within homes but also in public coffee houses known as qahveh khaneh. These establishments served as hubs for a variety of activities, ranging from discussions and news sharing to entertainment and political debate. The coffee culture in Saudi Arabia has traditionally emphasized serving the drink as a gesture of hospitality and respect.

Saudi Arabia's Coffee Market and Production Although Saudi Arabia is not a major coffee producer on a global scale, it has shown potential for growth in coffee

10

production. With the government's Vision 2030 initiative aiming to diversify the economy, coffee production has gained attention as a sector for development. As of the end of 2021, Saudi Arabia had around 400,000 coffee trees capable of producing about 800 tons of coffee per year. The goal is to plant 1.3 million coffee trees by 2025 to increase production significantly. Saudi Arabia's approach includes both modernizing the industry and preserving traditional coffee production methods, such as those used for Khawlani coffee, a highly prized Arabica variety grown in the region.

Traditional Preparation and Serving Saudi coffee is typically made using lightly roasted green coffee beans, often flavored with cardamom. The brewing process involves boiling the coffee until it becomes frothy, after which it is simmered for an additional two minutes before cardamom or creamer is added. The coffee is then ready to be served in small cups, traditionally only filled to a third to allow for quick cooling and multiple servings. The serving ritual is an important aspect of Saudi coffee culture, with the host or the youngest person at the gathering usually serving the coffee. It's common practice to serve the highest-ranking person or guest of honor first. The coffee is usually accompanied by dates or sweets to balance its slightly bitter taste.

UNIQUE ADDITIONS The unique additions of spices like cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and saffron to Saudi coffee not only enhance its flavor profile but also carry deep cultural and regional significance. These spices are more than just taste enhancers; they represent the rich culinary traditions and the diverse influences that shape Saudi Arabian culture.

THE DALLAH In traditional Saudi coffee culture, the dallah, a distinct parrot-funnel coffee pot, is an integral part of serving coffee. Until the 1960s, coffee was served in a dallah over an open fire. The method of serving coffee with the dallah reflects the importance of hospitality in Saudi culture.

Cardamom: Often the most dominant spice in Saudi coffee, cardamom adds a strong, unique flavor and an aromatic essence. It's known for its digestive properties and is a staple in many Middle Eastern cuisines. In Saudi Arabia, cardamom's inclusion in coffee varies in intensity from region to region, reflecting local preferences. Cloves: Cloves add a warm, slightly sweet, and peppery flavor to the coffee. Their use in Saudi coffee can be traced back to the spice trade routes that passed through the Arabian Peninsula. Each region might use cloves differently, with some preferring a more pronounced clove flavor than others. Cinnamon: Cinnamon, with its sweet and woody flavor, complements the robustness of coffee. It's not just a flavor enhancer but also a nod to the historical trade connections Saudi Arabia had with spice-producing countries. The use of cinnamon in coffee varies, with some areas preferring a subtle hint while others opt for a stronger cinnamon presence. Saffron: Saffron, known for its distinct color and luxurious aroma, imparts a golden hue and a rich, complex flavor to the coffee. The inclusion of saffron in Saudi coffee is a mark of opulence and is often reserved for special occasions. The amount and quality of saffron used can vary, reflecting the cultural and economic aspects of different regions.

ATHLETIC EXTRAVAGANZAS IN SAUDI ARABIA RIYADH'S RING OF RIVALS The Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk match, scheduled for February 17, 2024, in Riyadh's Kingdom Arena, is set to be a historic event in heavyweight boxing. This match, part of Riyadh Season 2023/24, will determine the undisputed heavyweight champion, a title last contested in 1999. Tyson Fury, the WBC champion, and Oleksandr Usyk, holding the WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO belts, are both undefeated. This match highlights Saudi Arabia's increasing prominence in hosting major sporting events, with Riyadh Season showcasing the city's growing status as a global event destination.

PUNCHING ABOVE: THE MAKING OF A BOXING HUB IN SAUDI ARABIA Saudi Arabia has increasingly become a hub for major boxing events, significantly impacting its sports industry and bolstering its global sports profile. The recent years have seen a series of high-profile boxing matches that have contributed to this rise. One notable event was the "Day of Reckoning," part of the Riyadh Season 2023. This event featured some of the world’s most famous boxing world champions and leading contenders, including twotime unified World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua. He faced Otto Wallin, while other renowned boxers like Joseph Parker and Deontay Wilder also graced the stage. This unprecedented lineup on a single night of boxing was not just a sporting spectacle but also a statement of Saudi Arabia’s growing prominence in the global sports arena. 12

Additionally, the historic boxing match between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou took center stage at the 2023 Riyadh Season. This fight was not just a highprofile sports event but also marked the dawn of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious foray into mainstream sports and entertainment. The Fury vs. Ngannou fight was a part of a larger strategy by Saudi Arabia to diversify its entertainment portfolio and attract global audiences. The strategic investment in combat sports, particularly boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), aligns with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's vision to reshape the kingdom's image and attract a wider demographic. The country's participation in these sports realms has been steadily growing, with events like the rematch

between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr. held in 2019 in a specially constructed venue, and the possibility of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) making its debut in Saudi Arabia in 2024. These events are transforming Saudi Arabia into a significant player in the world of combat sports. The kingdom's investment in this sphere, coupled with its ambition to host high-profile events, is an indicator of its intent to become a global sports and entertainment powerhouse. As Saudi Arabia continues to expand its footprint in the mainstream sports world, it is set to establish itself as a go-to destination for combat sports events.

From their arrival in the outer courtyards of the Two Holy Mosques to their participation in the various rituals and prayers, every detail is being meticulously crafted to enhance the spiritual journey. A significant aspect of this preparation includes the maintenance of the Kaaba's sound systems, ensuring that the call to prayer, an integral part of the Muslim faith, is broadcasted live, crisp, and clear. This initiative ensures that the timeless call resonates not just within the confines of the mosques but reaches the hearts of millions globally.

Empowering Female Pilgrims In a progressive move, educational services and special Ramadan programs have been tailored specifically for female pilgrims. This initiative acknowledges and respects the unique needs and roles of women in Islamic worship and aims to empower them in their spiritual journey during this holy month.

DESERT ROCK RESORT The Desert Rock Resort is an ambitious addition to Saudi Arabia's luxury tourism offerings. The resort, part of the Red Sea Project, is a hyper-luxury, eco-friendly 60-key mountain hotel being built into the desert cliffs. It includes 48 villas and 12 hotel rooms, all intricately integrated into the mountain to preserve its natural silhouette. This design approach provides guests with uninterrupted and spectacular views of the surrounding desert landscape. The architecture, conceived by Oppenheim Architecture, is based on the philosophy of building with the land, not on it, ensuring a respectful integration into the dramatic desert environment. The resort aims to achieve the highest LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification level, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. It will offer state-of-the-art facilities, including a world-class spa and fitness center, remote destination dining areas, and a lagoon oasis. The location itself is set in one of the most striking desert landscapes globally, offering guests an opportunity to physically connect with nature and experience the beauty of Saudi Arabia's natural terrain.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL JEDDAH Scheduled to open in 2024, the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Jeddah at the Corniche promises to be an epitome of luxury. Located in the Corniche District, this establishment will offer magnificent views of the Red Sea and Jeddah's classic architecture.

It will feature 269 luxuriously appointed guest rooms and suites, 21 serviced apartments for short and long-term stays, and 64 private residences, including two penthouses. The design, led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for architecture and Richmond International for interiors, aims to provide opulent and tasteful elements throughout the property. The hotel will also include various dining options with terraces, an outdoor shisha lounge, and a cigar lounge. For events, there will be 4,000 square meters of meeting and event space. Recreational facilities include separate pools, fitness centers, and spas for men and women, and a Kids For All Seasons program.
