The world we live in is temporary for future generations. After the industrial revolution, many of Earth's resources have been depleted. Over years, science has found ways to slow down the damage of our Earth but over time, Earth will no longer be suitable for human life. However, looking out, past the stars, there is a hidden safe place. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration "NASA" is America's national space program founded on July 28th 1958. For years, they have made advancements towards exploring the great beyond. One of their main goals has been exploring Earth's nearest neighbor, Mars. "Building on decades of robotic exploration, we're working to send humans to Mars in the 2030s," NASA official Jim Wilson said in Journey to Mars Overview. Mars is the first plan for humanities future generations. Tests have shown that life on Mars could be a comfortable one with underground water systems and suitable living space, with the help of some technology. "We are pushing the state of the art life support systems, printing 3-D parts, and analyzing material handling techniques for in-situ resource utilization," NASA editor Erin Mahoney said. But Mars isn't the only choice for our future in space. Past the stars, a series of planets similar to earth have been found and named "Kepler" after the deep space machine that found them. These planets have similar conditions to Earth's however most of them are much larger than Earth. "The size of Kepler-186f is known to be less than ten percent larger than Earth, but its mass, composition and density are not known," NASA writer Jessica Culler explained. "Previous research suggests that a planet the size of Kepler-186f is likely to be rocky. Prior to this discovery, the "record holder" for the most "Earth-like" planet went to kepler-186f, another discovery of a similar solar system was discovered.
Kepler-186f is extremely similar to Earth. It revolves around a large star about 500 light-years away from us. It's years length is about 130 days and it is only close enough to its star that midday looks similar to dusk on Earth. Following the discovery of Kepler186f, another discovery of a similar solar system was discovered. "The seven wonders of TRAPPIST-1 are the first Earth-size planets that have been found orbiting this kind of star," lead author of the paper and the principal investigator of the TRAPPIST exoplanet survey at the University of Liege, Michael Gillon said. "It is also the best target yet for studying the atmospheres of potentially habitable, Earthsize worlds."
Even though there are many unknowns about other planets and other solar systems in the universe, we know that we have possibilities just at the tip of our fingers. Whether we end up on our neighbor planet, Mars, orbiting on a self-sustaining craft or dozens of light-years away from where we are now, the future of humanity away from Earth is looking promising. "If we as a people decide to do it, we can do it. We have the scientific capability, financial capability, there is simply no question we can do it," scientist Dr. Al Globus said.
TRAPPIST-1 is an entire solar system similar to ours just slightly smaller with only seven planets and a much smaller center star. However, all of the planets in the system appear to be extremely similar to Earth and greatly thought to be life sustaining. TRAPPIST-1 is only 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) from Earth making it a prime target for possible human life. Not only would it be one planet but multiple. "The planets may also be tidally locked to their star, which means the same side of the planet is always facing the star, therefore each side is either perpetual day or night," NASA editor Karen Northon said. "This could mean they have weather patterns totally unlike those on Earth, such as strong winds blowing from the day side to the night side, and extreme temperature changes."
