ITALIAN NURSERY STOCK INDUSTRY SHOWS POSITIVE TRADE BALANCE, DESPITE CLIMATE ISSUES The Italian tree nursery sector has faced significant challenges in recent years. On one hand, the demand for green products surged after the pandemic, while
on the other hand, there weren't enough products to meet that demand. Despite substantial investments by the Italian government and climate challenges such as rising energy costs and the impact of the war in Ukraine, there is
now a positive trade balance. This is noteworthy for the Dutch tree nursery
sector, given Italy's importance for both the export and the import of specific Mediterranean plants. In this edition of the KwekersBode, we dive into the
Italian nursery stock industry and put the spotlight on two Italian companies.

that are ideal for cultivating different plant types, due to the influence of
the Alps, Apennines, and the sea. Over time, many 'production areas' have
emerged throughout the country. The
most renowned nursery area is Pistoia in Central Italy, known for its suitability for both hardy and Mediterranean
plants. With over 1,500 businesses on

International customers seeking specific items can purchase plants directly in
other Italian districts. Liguria, for example, is known for its herbs, while central and
southern regions like Marche, Lazio, and
Apulia specialise in Mediterranean plants. Northern Italy produces standard trees
(Canneto sull'Oglio), acid-loving plants (Lake Maggiore), and remnants of the
once-thriving production of ornamental fruit trees (Saonara, near Padova) or Japanese maples (Lombardy and
Piedmont). Sicily hosts one of Europe's largest nurseries (over 600 hectares)
near Catania, just below Mount Etna, and numerous ornamental citrus growers (Milazzo/Messina).

shortages. While some hedge plants, like Photinia and Prunus laurocerasus, could quickly increase production, addressing the shortage of avenue trees is more complex, requiring several years to
balance the increased demand with the very low supply.
Post-pandemic, Italy received substantial funds from the EU, including 330
million euros for 'urban forests' in the 14 'Metropolitan Cities' as part of the

container and field-grown trees, conifers, and shrubs, Magni Piante ssa exports
plants to European and non-EU countries. Sustainability is a priority for the nursery, evident in its environmental impact

Vivai Nord, established in 1988, is a

over 5,000 items annually, representing
more than 1,000 varieties across almost
50 hectares. Vivai Nord, which continually adds new varieties from around the
world, directly supplies wholesalers and
serves customers in Italy and many other European countries, including growers, garden centres, landscapers, and city green services.

this year’s theme: In The Picture. More than ever before, this year we will
focus on showcasing all participants and the industry as a whole.
Standing out in the green industry
The green industry is already remarkable in itself; the diversity, innovation, and creativity displayed by many green
entrepreneurs make it one of the most
flourishing industries at the moment. At
the same time, it remains an art to truly stand out. Trade fair GrootGroenPlus helps with that. With the theme ‘In The Picture,’ we not only highlight
entrepreneurs but also the entire industry, education related to the industry, and, of
course, the plants. We do this for example through the Green Grand Prix.

the green industry. It invests year-round in attracting new participants and
visitors, but also in setting up valuable
collaborations that benefit the industry. Consider, for example, a collaboration with Rabobank, which has resulted in a multilingual trade fair app, the
collaboration with Stichting Nationale
Boomfeestdag, ensuring that the industry stays top-of-mind with the younger generation, and collaborations with
educational institutions to contribute to solving the labour shortage in the
industry. By putting the industry in the picture in various ways, we ensure year-round attention.
Smart communication before and during the trade fair Of course, it’s essential for participants to capitalise on the buzz we create, especially before and during the

Florall, the Belgian trade fair for ornamental plants and nursery stock products
On Tuesday 5 March 2024, over 70 floriculture, tree nursery and supply companies will present their products at FLORALL’s spring fair. Here,
professional growers present their assortment to an international audience. In addition to the production companies, important trading and export companies and suppliers (potting soil, fertilisers, automation, climate control) also participate in FLORALL. All companies and their products can be found in the free trade fair
catalogue, as well as in the plant register on the website. The FLORALL trade fair
takes place in the exhibition hall of Waregem Expo, with a spacious and free car
park near the trade fair buildings. The easy access and approachability of FLORALL allow you to get an overview of the Flemish spring offer in one day.
Florall Awards
As usual, the FLORALL AWARDS will also be presented during the trade fair. A
professional jury awards a gold, silver or bronze FLORALL AWARD to companies that present a novelty in the form of a new variety, sales or presentation concept.
Registration is mandatory
Access to the trade fair is free, and limited to floricultural professionals, ranging from wholesalers, garden centres to representatives of public green spaces.
To guarantee a smooth influx, pre-registration via the website is www.florall.be mandatory.

“With Pientere Tuinen, participants have a sensor in their garden that measures temperature and soil moisture. These data are made visible in the garden

Wet winters and dry summers

of Taxus and Fagus, which will only become apparent in the summer months. And although nursery stock growers are
accustomed to the whims of nature, the extremes seem to be increasing, and it is important to adapt to them. This can be done, for example, with one of these four methods.
