Endless Eindhoven. We are the city and the region of unprecedented possibilities, both economically and socially. With a little goodwill... Our history proves that. The region emerged from the last major crisis in the early 1990s much stronger thanks to cooperation, with the current highlight being voted the smartest region in the world in 2011. Fourteen years later, we are still among the smartest regions in the world.
But is Eindhoven also endless? No, it is becoming increasingly clear that Eindhoven and the region are slowly but surely reaching the limits of growth. Companies are desperate for personnel (talent), both higher and secondary educated. There is a lack of housing, a shortage of electricity, roads are congested, waiting lists are increasing. In the meantime, the government is fumbling with agreements, making it less attractive for companies and people to settle, stay or work here.
Fortunately, the region believes in itself. This is also inspired by history, for a long time we were a kind of wing region for the large trading cities in the west of the country, uninteresting, until it turned out that there were plenty of opportunities for industrialization here. They joined forces and rolled up their sleeves to boost

prosperity to great heights. That is still the case. The Brainport region is leading the way in the Netherlands and is increasingly becoming the economic cork on which the country floats.
Endless means: that which has no end. That is something other than infinite and limitless. Let’s keep thinking in terms of possibilities, even though we are now reaching limits. There are plenty of creative people in the region who see opportunities for themselves and others. They are the builders of a new future. They are endless, in their manner and in their achievements. We are happy to offer them a platform every month. In Eindless. Where else?

With visual arts, video and photography, (sound) installations, and performances, this international collective provided an intriguing insight into personal and universal fears in 2024. What’s Up in Brainport Eindhoven
De Bever Architecten in Eindhoven is an innovative, future-oriented firm that is active in the areas of architecture, urban planning, and interior design, including new construction, renovation, and redevelopment. Since 2000, Stefan de Bever and his wife Heleen van Heel have formed the fourth generation of architects associated with ‘De Bever’. The history goes back to 1897. Stefan safeguards his father Leo de Bever’s heritage. Together with graphic designer and Philips Art Director Louis Kalff, he designed The Evoluon, which is considered the pre-eminent exponent of Brainport.
Is Eindhoven booming? Of course, Eindhoven is booming. If you look at what has changed in recent decades, you realize that a lot has been developed. We certainly haven’t been sitting still. In my youth I played basketball for PSV, in Woensel. A real Eindhoven club. We played with boys, nine out of ten of whom came from Eindhoven. Six out of ten had parents who worked for or at Philips. One boy with roots in Suriname, pretty much the only one here in Eindhoven at that time. His father also came for Philips. At the end of the season, we would watch recordings of the NBA finals. Because one of those fathers owned a Video 2000 system with those large Video 2000 cassettes which he got by post from America. How nice was that?
Now, forty years later, I still play for this basketball club, a division of the former PSV, BCE (Basketball Club Eindhoven). I am of course the oldest on the team, and I am still allowed to run, which still works out well, if I say so myself. Today, of the fifteen players, there are at most five Dutch people in the team. On an evening, we sometimes play five against five and there are two Dutch-speaking boys present, of which I am one. Furthermore, they are boys from Serbia, Bosnia, Latvia, France, Italy, Morocco, Spain, and Poland. They work at the companies in our Brainport, supplying and developing. At the end of the season, we still watch the NBA finals every now and then, when it is (illegally) streamed from the internet.
My brother moved from Amsterdam to New York a long time ago and later back to Amsterdam. Sometimes he doesn’t understand what I’m talking about when I talk about Brainport. The dynamics here. The largest economic engine that the Netherlands currently runs on. I don’t think it is comprehensible, even by Dutch standards, what is going on here. Why is so much English spoken in that provincial town, why do you have so many international (knowledge) workers living there? I often visit these companies because of my work as an architect. We facilitate the high-tech and manufacturing industry in this region so that they can realize their expansion. Then you see what is going on and what drives our region; the innovative power, top-down and bottom-up, go hand in hand. Bendable video screens, robotics, photonics, IT, companies that assemble low-tech and high-tech components. The many prototyping facilities and labs, where the latest concepts come to fruition and generate new business models. We do this together with a very large group of people, people like you and me, who we meet everywhere. That is apparently special by Dutch standards. But how do you explain that?
Did you know that the name Eindhoven is originally a derivative of the river Einde (which we now know from the Gender) and hova (a building with land for exploitation). Geologically it makes who we are in this specific place. The continuity of flowing water, the dynamics of change, the way we come together to do things together. How good Brainport is.

Friendly social running
The Cubs Run Club is a relatively new running club in Eindhoven that brings locals and expats together through (social) runs on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings ending at the best coffee spots in the city, where we can relax and catch up together. We believe in the power of running because it connects people and forms friendships, regardless of background or experience. The running club is a true reflection of the diverse communities in Eindhoven with members from countries such as Belgium, Germany, England, Ireland, Turkey, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mexico, India and many more.

THE ISSUE
Brainport is entering the next phase. Economic growth is rapid, companies are expanding their activities, Eindhoven and the surrounding area must accelerate construction while ‘the factory of the future’ or Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) cluster 2 is being constructed. In the meantime, the battle for talent is breaking out in full force, under the influence of negative national political developments. Talent is the fuel for economic growth. The question is what does Brainport have to offer?
BY: HANS MATHEEUWSEN
We all know the slogan ‘War on talent’. Better would be: ‘War for talent’ because there is no ‘war’ being waged against talent, but about talent. Policy makers would rather get rid of the slogan altogether because no war is being waged at all. But there is a battle for talent. A competitive battle, that is, internationally, and Brainport is prominently at the front. Not a nice indication, but it does indicate the dynamics in which business, government, and educational institutions - working together within the so-called ‘triple helix’ - have ended up in the region.
Another concept that is often used these days is ‘scale jump’. If directors have their way, activity will continue to grow; ASML alone, for example, will double its number of employees in Veldhoven to 30,000. In total, around
70,000 jobs will be created in the region in the coming years. To meet the demand for highly skilled technical personnel, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) would also like to double the number of students to 30,000.
To achieve this, around 100,000 homes need to be built in South-East Brabant. Eindhoven is committed to the transformation of the centre on the TU/e side. About 15,000 people should live there by 2040, compared to 200 now. Another example is the construction of BIC cluster 2, between the A2 and Eindhoven Airport, by SDK Vastgoed. This ‘factory of the future’ measures 300,000 (!!) square meters and must literally and figuratively offer new space to the high-tech industry in the region. The traditional industrial estates are congested and land for expansion is becoming scarce. The ‘War for building land’ also seems imminent.
Synergie
All this on the condition that the business community finds enough highly qualified people to at least maintain production but preferably expand it. Following ASML, NXP recently stated that it would look beyond the borders of the country if the source of personnel in the Netherlands dries up. And that danger exists with proposed administrative measures such as reducing the number of foreign students, replacing English with Dutch as the language of instruction at universities, and possibly abolishing the thirty percent tax benefit for expats.
This does not improve the chances for the Netherlands as a favourable location country, while there is an increasing need for foreign knowledge and talent to advance the hightech industry. There is talk of a challenge that the triple helix must meet. And not only
8
by producing engineers, but also by devising and implementing educational systems that enable students to become acquainted with the requirements of the business community earlier and faster. Think of the synergy between Summa College and the companies in the BIC cluster 1 that is already there. This is already a prerequisite for the success of BIC cluster 2 and therefore that of the high-tech industry in the Brainport region, argues Ferdinand Gstromen, director of SDK Vastgoed. He would like to see TU/e and Fontys follow this good example.
Talent as fuel
In the meantime, Brainport’s project organization is thinking hard about the strategy to retain international talent for companies and how to interest knowledge workers abroad in a job in the regional high-tech industry. ‘Talent is the fuel for Brainport Eindhoven’s economic engine is the frequently heard adage. Nicole Zwetsloot, Project Manager Brainport Talent Attraction Programme, among others, uses the new credo, which dates back to the time when Philips brought its employees from everywhere and created attractive employment conditions, such as a house to live in, for working in the factory.
Zwetsloot and de haar have developed a programme to attract co-ordinated and joint international tech and IT talent. The region has more vacancies than people and has done so for some time. She advocates an integrated approach, looking at broader interests other than just those of one’s own company. In other

words: to the entire Brainport ecosystem. So not only to the ASMLs and NXPs of this world, but especially to SMEs - the suppliers to the multinationals and startups.

Home of pioneers
Completely in line with the tradition, the innovative character and the image of the region, they came up with the pay-off ‘Home of pioneers’ from the Brainport Talent Attraction Program. Which is correct of course. This is where the future is made, think of the inventions of the scientists employed by Philips, but also of the extremely advanced chip machines of ASML. The slogan is in line with Brainport’s brand values, according to Zwetsloot, such as human (‘with each other and for each other’) and groundbreaking (‘is not possible, does not exist’). Home of Pioneers tells the story of the people in the region, where everyone can feel at home and where together we come up with beautiful new solutions for global, social problems. In that context she speaks of a ‘Battle for talent’ or better yet of a ‘Playground for talent’. That sounds a lot less warlike, she thinks. Work content is important for talent, she knows from research. Why do talents choose the Brainport region? Because of the social character and the good work-life balance. She thinks that our accessibility to people and receptiveness to strangers helps. And of course the much-vaunted, unique collaboration: everyone is ‘One phone call away’. But above all: we will figure it out together because we all know that without the other we have no right to exist. Nice thought, in the current era of crises and wars. Let’s export them as well.n

Music
If you are a musician or like music, you need to know Music with strangers. It is an association that connects people through music. It is very cool! Different people who connect with each other through their love for music.
Theatre
There is a place that welcomes me in the city, as if it were my home. A cozy and happy environment that embraces you. It’s the De Ilse Wouters Academie, in Sectie C. The theater’s program is extensive and the doors are always open to welcome newcomers to Eindhoven. And it includes theater classes in English for the international community. I myself participate in a theater group and also work on the production team of ‘Burst your Bubble’ dedicated to building bridges between locals and international peers. We are already going to the 3rd edition of this event.
Art
I recently discovered a very interesting gallery, that’s worth visiting: Salon Veneman. It’s at Tongelresestraat 1. Every month, new local talent exhibits or performs there. If you’re passing by, it’s worth popping in and checking it out.
Food & Drinks
A place that is always very good is Miss Temaki, at Strijp-S. Very Yummy! Another place I like is Takumi Ramen Kitchen, close to Saint Catherine Church. For a nice coffee, I recommend a very cozy place, on the central Market square: De Vooruitgang

The Netherlands can be the bridge between China and the West
As a female transfer pricing partner, my recent ten-day business trip through China was an extremely educational and inspiring experience, which took me along the country’s coast. During the trip I had the opportunity to get to know my fellow traveller and senior advisor better, another lady with Chinese roots like me, allowing us to share a deeper understanding of each other’s background and experiences. For her it’s coming home, for me it always feels double. I leave my family and friends in the Netherlands, but I always have the feeling that I am coming home again. The feeling of hate and love that is difficult for me to describe.
Our journey started in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai where we were inspired by conversations with our customers’ CFOs in the hightech zone. Unfortunately, many foreigners have left after Covid19. Now that the economy is growing less rapidly, foreign investors are more than welcome to return to China. My colleague and I noted that the image of both China and the West is coloured by the media and that meeting each other in person is extremely valuable.
After a deep dive into Shanghai’s innovative scene, we rushed to Nanjing by high-speed train, where we were confronted with the challenges of Chinese outbound multi-nationals that have yet to make the move. These innovative companies in the renewable energy and medical sectors, previously highly dependent on the enormous growth in the domestic market, are now faced with the task of expanding their activities across borders, given the declining growth in the domestic market. At the same time, they are confronted with increasingly strict European regulations, a lack of qualified talent and cultural differences between the domestic and foreign markets. They note that the Dutch business climate is very expensive, but hopefully worth it in the end. They hope that the Netherlands can act as a bridge between the West and China.
Our journey continued to Suzhou, where it became clear that innovation is no longer optional. Chinese companies must create new products and services to remain competitive on the global stage. One of our customers, which once started as a battery manufacturer, now has the ambition to grow into a leading international supplier of sustainable energy solutions with its own corporate culture.
By the time we reached Shenzhen for our final engagements, we were steeped in the complexity of the challenges facing Chinese companies. In just a few decades, the city has grown into an economic powerhouse
and a technological centre. Shenzhen is known as a breeding ground for talent, diversity and inclusion, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship. In other words: China’s Silicon Valley.
During our farewell dinner, one of our clients expressed concerns about China’s international image, slow economic growth and hoped that successful, prosperous Chinese entrepreneurs like himself would continue to make their contributions to Chinese society. He expressed the hope that the wealth they have amassed would once again translate into value creation for the world. In addition, he also emphasized the important role of businesswomen, noting that they represent a new era of female leadership. He predicted that the role of women in international business will become increasingly important.

MENTAL HEALTH BASKETBALL FOR YOUNG GIRLS
Chatilla van Grinsven about passion, perseverance and social significance
Chatilla van Grinsven’s achievements, far from confined to the basketball court, resonate deeply with her fans, inspiring them to reach their dreams.
TEXT: AILÉN GAMBERONI | PHOTO’S: EDDIE MOL
As a pivotal player in the Netherlands Basketball Team, she has amassed many international accolades. Her impressive list of honors includes the NCAA Atlantic-10 Conference Championship, French Championship, Big-5 Player of the Year Award, Roosevelt Hunter Community Service Award, and a nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award in the United States. This last recognition, notably, celebrated her exceptional educational accomplishments, her prowess on the basketball court, and her dedication to community service. With a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business from Saint Joseph’s University (USA) and a Master’s Degree from the University of London, SOAS, in Global Diplomacy (Political Science), with a focus on human rights and the United Nations (UN), she has proven that she can achieve success in multiple areas. Her influence extends beyond the court, as she uses her platform as a TV and Instagram star to inspire and connect with her fans, fostering a sense of unity and shared aspiration.
Chatilla’s journey is a testament to the unwavering power of passion and dedication, a story that resonates with the struggles and triumphs of her fans. Born in Eindhoven, she spent her formative years in Son en Bruegel before moving to Helmond with her parents at eight. Her basketball journey began with the Helmond Wizards, where her love for the sport took root. That was the starting point for her extraordinary path to success, which was not without its challenges. Yet, she navigated these hurdles with unwavering determination, inspiring her fans to persevere in adversity.
Where does your passion for basketball come from?
“My dad handed me a videotape of Michael Jordan playing in a big arena in front of 30/40 thousand people cheering his name and Chicago Bulls. He was flying through the air, making impressive moves with a loud voice screaming This is Michael Jordan, number 23! It was terrific, and I said this is America? I want to go there and become a professional basketball player. It became my dream; my goal was to go there, and it happened “. At just eleven, Chatilla entered the Eindhoven High League, a stepping stone on her path to greatness until she moved to America. Her incredible talent was discovered at sixteen during the European Championship, marking the start of her stars-and-stripes adventure and
rise to international success. Her dream was a fleeting wish and a burning ambition that fueled her every step.
So: “A star is born.”
“Basketball is not a big sport in Holland, but it is the biggest sport in America. I first moved to Colorado State University and then to Philadelphia Saint Joseph University. I amassed numerous international accolades over the years “. The goals achieved were impressive. Chatilla van Grinsven became a shiny international basketball star. “It was is a very unique and beautiful experience. There have been many ups and downs in my career. There were smiles, tears, sweat, and much effort and sacrifice to reach my goals. It wasn’t so easy; it was pretty hard. The road was difficult to get there, to the top, to be a great player in the highest leagues in the world, but also a beautiful road to journey.
‘I was lucky to have my parents close to me’
The journey is life, and that is what you remember. If I look back, I don’t just think hey, we won the Championship. I remember working with my team so hard at our many practices. And the coach’s speeches to keep going and the mental toughness you must have.
I remember we were so tired after four hours of running that we threw up, and the coach was screaming keep running. You are more than you can imagine! So we were running for another hour.
For me, basketball is my home and part of my family history and DNA. I was lucky to have my parents close to me; my dad teached me in Europe, and he was my manager. When in America, he remain my sister en my coach until we made it. When I won the Championship, he saw that game. One year later, he passed away when I was 23. He saw me doing great things; he pushed me so much, helped me, and managed me and my sister well. I was proud of myself but knew I could never do it alone. >
14 SPORT & WELFARE
‘The journey of life, is what you remember’
“You honor sport first and foremost by practicing it and even more by bringing its meaning to life outside the field’s confines. In sports, there is spectacular attractiveness, strength, and epic. Still, above all, some situations and behaviors apply to our entire existence and can make it - and make us - better”.
- Franco Bolelli (Italian philosopher and colossal basketball fan) -

SPORT & WELZIJN
Team sports, including basketball, football, volleyball, hockey, or water polo, play a crucial role in improving the mental health of young children. These activities teach them to interact better with their peers, fostering a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that is invaluable for their emotional well-being. This aspect of team sports was part of Chatilla’s journey. She found solace and strength in her team, emphasizing the importance of such activities for young children’s mental health.
“When I teach at school, I realize that when they play, have fun, and when having fun, they become friends, which is fantastic. Their frustration can be out through spot and intense exercise, especially with basketball, which is a potent activity.
Even if they are tired, they are happy they meet new people, and their mental health is improving because it’s a team sport. In a team connection, you must work together to defend the ball from scoring against you. The chemistry in the team uplifts everybody. When somebody scores, it is part of a team effort, and you feel encouraged, especially as a child and even as a grown-up. When I score, is theirs score too, and you are happy for each other. It is a tremendous social and mental activity. Everybody can play basketball in the gym at school, and you also see many people play on the street, which is becoming increasingly popular these days “.
You are one of the motivators for BrabantSport’s Game of Your Life project. “I have only completed one project for the foundation, but I will soon complete another one. The young generation seeks inspiration, motivation, and connections through sports. I did a session last month, which was fantastic. I still remember all the kids being thrilled. I also gave an inspirational talk about my career, which I am doing more often now, for business and schools. It was touching to see the children listen to me so quietly. I talked about what I had experienced, both my successes and my difficulties. They have to understand that to be successful can be challenging. When I was young at school, somebody once teased me because I had a Moroccan dad and a Dutch mother. I believed strongly in myself and confronted the bully. I wasn’t scared, and I solved the situation. I was showing I believed in myself. My self-esteem was high. And I solved the situation”.
From the basketball courts to motivational speeches, with your genuine enthusiasm, you strike me as the perfect person for an energy boost.
“I tried to teach my life lessons at school, from my life so far and my basketball experience. During difficult moments, the most important thing is to show your character, not just to others but especially to yourself. Think about what you tell yourself daily: motivate yourself, strive for excellence, and consider your goals. Then, you have to take action. Through my motivational speeches, I try to teach the children the lessons I had to learn so they can return to success”.
Game Of Your Life
A boost for mental health
To stimulate broad sports development, BrabantSport has brought numerous major sporting events to North Brabant in recent years, including La Vuelta Holanda, the Cyclo-Cross World Championships, and The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final. And that’s not all. The so-called The Game Of Your Life program aims to improve young girls’ mental health (13-18 years) through the power of football. It is desperately needed: as many as 43% of girls in secondary schools in the Netherlands suffer from emotional problems, and one in three teenagers even has an anxiety disorder. Girls are especially susceptible to this, and these figures have worsened due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Game Of Your Life offers a stage to make an impact that goes beyond football dreams and can bring about positive change. It helps to change participants’ lives forever through trainers who share their experiences and use sports.
Every Tuesday evening, more than 25 girls between 13 and 18 gather in the gym on Don Boscostraat in Eindhoven for a new Game Of Your Life session. This social project creates a level playing field for all young girls, regardless of their origins, financial position, or home situation. The participants, in turn, become catalysts of change in their immediate environment. This ripple effect allows us to reach more girls, many of whom become trainers themselves, passing on their experiences to new groups of participants. Ultimately, this program should be the catalyst for a movement that positively impacts the lives of thousands of girls. Participants in the Game Of Your Life program share their experiences and the program’s effects with each other, creating a robust network of support and inspiration before the final. In one of the sessions, the former Women’s NBA basketball star Chatilla van Grinsven was present in her hometown to inspire the group, and she will come back on the 21st of May in Den Bosh.
The Game Of Your Life teaches the young participants respect, teamwork, self-esteem norms, and values.
The Game Of Your Life project is a partnership between More2Win, The BrabantSport Fund, Favela Street, Municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, PowerUp073, FC Den Bosch Foundation, Municipality of Eindhoven, Dynamo Jeugdwerk, and National Fund for Sport.
Reading the data dedicated to Dutch teenagers is a shock. Especially after the pandemic, did you know one in three has an anxiety disorder and suffers from emotional problems?
‘Children have to understand that to be successful can be challenging’
“It is sad. That’s why communication is so important, especially in a group. Young people must be able to talk to other people. For example, I come to the project as a coach to tell my story, but sometimes, they need to come to me to talk about theirs. They need to express their feelings and find someone to trust in their circle. Girls especially hold their anger and fear because they are scared to speak, and boys fight, and then it is over. In general - not always - girls are more emotional because they keep everything inside. So, through this project, they learned ways to communicate with somebody in the field so they would have different coaches around. And they can find security. Even in good times, talking and creating your big family is essential. I also had downfalls. I also needed a full backup. I had my parents, but not everybody has a good relationship with mum or dad, so it is crucial in this project that they always have somebody to talk to. It is fantastic for kids to find a secure place to ask questions and get help. Also, it is vital for those girls at this age to have a role model like me today or someone else next week and get some personal attention. The last time I gave my clinic, I was supposed to be there just an hour or two, but I stayed longer because those girls needed to talk, some to share their personal stories, and I gave advice. That is beautiful to do and is a lovely part of team sports like basketball. It’s about unity, team effort, and team play. When we played together, it was so much fun. Everybody laughed. They learn to communicate with each other; it is fantastic for me to see how some mental health issues can change the well-being of a sports action”.
You have a hectic schedule. How do you find time to do all these things? “Because it is my passion. My passion has always been the rights of the weakest, such as children or animals. I am lucky enough to use my visibility on television or via social networks, and I will always continue to dedicate my time to these activities”. n

And despite, or rather because of, all the setbacks, he is turning into a much nicer person than he was during his marriage. Through trial and error, he learns to live his own life. Wiener Symphoniker & Gautier Capuçon
The most popular cello concerto of all time was written by the passionate composer Antonín Dvořák. The piece has it all: it’s heroic, powerful, lyrical and moving, especially when the composer quotes a song at the end that he dedicated to his recently deceased lover. The French cellist Gautier Capuçon provides a wonderful experience with this work! Other works on the program are the two most famous symphonic poems by Richard Strauss: Don Juan, based on a German (anti)heroic poem, where Strauss instructed his musicians to reminisce about the time when they were newly married to evoke passion and Till Eulenspiegel - his most playful composition.
Frank Boeijen
His unmistakable voice, the songs from the heart, his band that fits like a warm coat. Frank Boeijen touches the heart of the theater visitor with his personal story. Hits from the past, ‘De Verzoening’ (The Reconciliation), ‘Zeg me dat het niet zo is’ (Tell Me It Isn’t So), ‘Koud in mijn hart’ (Cold in My Heart), and ‘Kronenburg Park’ are brought to the present in a surprising way. PALLIATIVE CARE FOR A DYSTOPIAN WORLD BY BOOGAERDT/VANDERSCHOOT
Cocoons like bandaged shelters suspended in an undulating landscape with hidden small pools. The landscape is an in-between space, a bardo, of dust that becomes dust again, just as everything that lives becomes dust again. Or becomes liquid.
Floating, bearing, lifting, carrying – intricate life, retreating into a ‘carrier bag’. Seemingly dead on the outside, but bubbling, transforming, incubating inside. We move past it, mourning the soup of life, working our way through the compost heap, where we digest the old and make space for...

Hidden Connections
EXHIBITION UNRAVELS VAN ABBEMUSEUM’ S ORIGIN IN THE COLONIAL PAST
In 1933, cigar manufacturer Henri van Abbe founded the Van Abbemuseum. It was partly funded with money he had made from the tobacco industry. This tobacco was sourced largely from plantations in the Dutch East Indies. But why do we know so little about the horrific working and living conditions on these plantations?
The exhibition Hidden Connections unravels the Van Abbemuseum’s origin in the colonial past. Archive material, audio and video interviews and illustrations all focus on the perspective of plantation workers in Deli, on the island of Sumatra.
Hidden resistance
The stories of the indentured workers’ resistance – which did indeed exist – were often not recorded, but only passed on orally. The workers choose inventive ways to express their anger, sadness and to warn each other. These stories form the inspiration for the huge drawings in Hidden Connections. One of the illustrations depicts The snake of Sumatra. This parable warned workers about a man-eating snake in Deli. After eating its prey, it excreted gold for the Dutch.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER
RAMON DE NENNIE
Workers on a plantation in Deli (now Medan) around 1900.
UNTIL
ANDREA LEHNERT
Birds of the same plumage find each other and hang together, enter into relationships, connect without prejudice or judgment. Archie, Edith, the meatball, the daughter, that were the days. All the figures in the exhibition just arrived, sometimes as exhibition surplus, sometimes as a foundling...
Ramon de Nennie not only compiles art magazines or comic books, but also 3-dimensional figures. Found objects, coincidence and bravado are the basic elements for the works that he created for this exhibition in his studio in Vlissingen. During the finisage on Sunday April 7, you can move among them with a musical accompaniment, you can start to feel a little related to these eccentric guests, because they are a bit, but still... talk to them, listen to them, understand their situation, they depend on who cherishes them... T56
Andrea Lehnert (Düsseldorf) paints with rapid, thick brushstrokes on rough, unprocessed canvas or paper. Her work moves between the abstract and the concrete, the rational and the unreasonable.
She finds parallels with the times we live in, a world in which rationality and madness come together. Lehnert’s work is a psychological journey in time. What remains visible and what is covered. But also, how does her work relate to art historical painters such as Velasquez and Matisse. Lehnert’s landscapes manifest themselves as large-scale visual events. Any human bodies present tell a smaller and quieter story.

Simac Directors Maartje van Schagen and Ine Frings about women at the top
‘There are more ‘Peters’ than women directors in the Netherlands’
Maartje van Schagen has been Simac’s boss for over a hundred days. She succeeded her father Eric as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Some time before that, Ine Frings joined the management of the Veldhoven family business, which recently announced its move to the Techniekhuys, which is literally across the street. What do they think about diversity and women at the top? “It came together like a puzzle.”
TEXT: HANS MATHEEUWSEN | PHOTOGRAPHY: KEES MARTENS / DCI MEDIA
Simac is a regionally well-known IT service provider that is firmly rooted in Veldhoven. The company provides generic IT services such as connectivity, cloud, and workplace services, as well as more specific technological solutions for retail (cash register), healthcare (domotics) or smart building solutions. As general manager, Maartje manages almost 1,300 employees - 450 of whom are in Veldhoven - spread over nineteen companies with 26 branches in seven European countries. The head office is currently located at De Run 1101, directly opposite the next expansion of tech giant ASML. And shortly after the conversation it became known that Simac’s head office had also been sold to ASML, like so many buildings in Veldhoven.
Simac preferred not to move to another municipality and wanted to stay in Veldhoven. It illustrates the bond with their native land and the warmth with which the Van Schagen family manages the company, says Ine Frings, herself from Boer & Croon. Simac was a client of the management consultancy firm, so Ine, Eric and Maartje were already familiar with each other. Before Boer & Croon, Ine worked at KPN, ProRail and construction company Heijmans.
Women in technology, it can be a theme and it is, says Maartje, but as far as she is concerned the dimension is much greater. It is also about leading a family business with a like culture, the relationship between men and women, young and old, experienced and inexperienced. The Simac management consists of four people, except for Maartje and Ine from Eric van Schagen and financial man Michael van Kasteren. The last two bring much-needed experience.
Both Maartje and Ine speak of a pleasant mix. Maartje: “We consciously looked at the balance: two women, two men. Two Van Schagens, two non-Van Schagens. Two who have been on the board for a long time and two who are relatively new. It came together like a puzzle.” Ine: “In my case there was a kind of
natural click. Great that I can bring Simac to the next generation together with Maartje. We are in a nice transition phase at Simac.”

Maartje was equally used to moving within the company as a woman and had been managing Simac’s largest operating company for some time. There she appointed two female colleagues to management. “They are just two top players who were a bit hidden in the organization. Women are not so likely to raise their hands. I was never consciously concerned with the position of women at the

top. At one point, one of those two went to a ‘female leadership’ course and said ‘gosh Maartje, did you know that we have an important role model?’ One of her female employees had also pointed this out to her, for her we were apparently proof that at Simac you can also grow to the top as a woman. We are a role model for women who can reach the top.”
Maartje had never thought about it that way, she admits. As a daughter, she almost automatically entered the company, but not with the thought of one day succeeding her father Eric. “I don’t think I would be in this place if I hadn’t been family,” he says candidly. “I’m not the person who plays the game sharply with elbows, as is sometimes necessary. That doesn’t suit me. In fact, that turns me off. Succession is also not determined by gender. But adding feminine qualities to the team does
ensure that you break things open every now and then. Sometimes you just have to intervene in emotion or feeling. Men are less likely to do that.”
Maartje is convinced that this helps her to make better decisions. Not better than men, but substantively better. “A kind of vulnerability, a certain way of connecting and sometimes a completely different view of things allows you to make a better decision.” Ine thinks that new energy compared to the usual energy also plays a role. “The balance of different knowledge, different types of people, experience. A good mix is important. I am a results-oriented connector. I identify things, bring ideas from other places, look from the outside in. There is a certain culture within a family business. I think I’ll stir things up a bit and shake things up.”
Diversity
Ine only realized at Heijmans that she worked as a woman among many men, she explains. Before that, she worked in environments where there was more balance between the number of women and men. She has experienced that male colleagues talk about their emotions more easily with her than with other male colleagues. Even if you come from outside and are new to an organization, people are naturally very open about what is going on within an organization and how they experience things themselves. “Diversity is very nice. You get different conversations, more openness, different perspectives, and different ideas.” Maartje thought that diversity, the discussion about women at the top and the quota of one-third women (30%) in management boards were nonsense for a long time: “The best belongs in the right place. But in practice that often does not happen. It is often a bit like ‘like seeks like’. Ine recognizes this. I have experienced in recent years that the discussions about the introduction of the ‘growth quota and target figures’ law (the ‘women’s quota’) have really created a more balanced male-female ratio at the top of the business community. That would never have happened automatically.”
34 SOCIETY
Maartje: “I was sometimes called ‘that girl’ here. Things were kept from me on the assumption that they were too difficult for me. You still sometimes notice a difference. For example, I also make hard decisions while the organization thinks that the operational director makes them. Older generations are used to their ‘grey Peters’. There are more ‘Peters’ directors in the Netherlands than women. They are still looking for each other. On the other hand, I would never want to sit somewhere because a certain quota must be met.”
One Simac
Uncertainty also plays a role in all this, Maartje says honestly. “Of course, you sometimes doubt yourself. While I also know
that our supervisory board has extensively interfered with my appointment. I have made my mark within Simac, but still... Would I have been here if my name had not been Van Schagen? My previous management role consisted only of 55-plus men. That was quite a lonely time at times. I was everything they were not: young, female, thought differently, barely knew anything about technology. I also felt insecure about that for a long time. But now I know, it’s not about technology at all. It’s about leadership. Nobody cares what technology is under the bonnet. I don’t feel the need to be better or know better, we have so many experts and specialists who know much more than I do. We all want to be one Simac for our customers: warm, agile, valuable and a winning team.” n

An Indian restaurant with a ‘1001 nights’ Moroccan touch
“But what is your origin?” A question that guests often ask Mohamed in his modern Indian restaurant with open kitchen on the Geldropseweg in Eindhoven. “The guests are often a bit surprised when I answer that I was born in Morocco,” Mohamed continues. “But when I tell my story (and I like to do that, sometimes at the table for a little too long…) then our guests understand where my love for Indian cuisine comes from.”
An expat himself in the business world for many years, Mohamed travelled halfway around the world before deciding to start a family and put away his bags for good.
Starting a family has been a success, with his partner Sabrina, daughter of a Surinamese-Hindustani mother and Dutch father.
“I knew Indian cuisine from the many company dinners during my international career, Indian cuisine is extremely popular in London and Dubai. We have the luxury that my mother-in-law often cooks for us and a lot of masala, turmeric and other Indian spices are used.’’ Combining his Moroccan background and love for hospitality and gastronomy, the idea was born to work with the family to open the first Indian restaurant, 91 Spices, in Rotterdam in 2018.
Veera Eindhoven opened its doors in 2022, in a central location close to the vibrant nightlife of Eindhoven. The team naturally
Have you never been to India or couldn’t tell what Indian food is exactly?
Do you absolutely hate spicy food, or can’t you get enough of it? Do you eat halal or vegan, or neither? Are you coming with your whole family, for a business dinner or are you celebrating your wedding anniversary or birthday? No problem, everyone is welcome at Veera.
consists of Indian expat chefs that Mohamed himself brought to the Netherlands. Mohamed arranges a work permit and a home in the Netherlands for his chefs and pays for, among other things, a plane ticket to India every year so that they can see their families. “We take good care of them; I think that is important. They are part of the family, and I am very proud of them.”
In addition, there is a lot of diversity at Veera. In service, for example. “From international to local Brabant. Everyone is welcome, for example we also work with young people who are trying to enter the labour market. We do this in collaboration with the municipality and education. We are also a recognized training company, so we also supervise interns.”
The concept at Veera? “We will help you discover Indian cuisine and culture,” reassures Mohamed. “We think along with you and ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves without any worries. Whatever kind of company, dietary requirements, or taste palette you come with. We have many business guests but also families, so we also have special menus for that. Like an Indian children’s menu with Dutch fries,” says Mohamed with a wink. He is most proud of the fact that everyday people in his restaurant are introduced to Indian cuisine for the first time.

Teacher for life
When I read the feedback from one of our students, I was moved; ‘it’s the first time in my life that I come to class with pleasure, the teacher really understands me!’ For me, it’s not new to hear how important a teacher is for a student. I hear it and see it around me every day; the connection, the happy faces of a group, the joy, and the growing confidence. A teacher is crucial in the learning process, also when learning a new language. Of course, there are people who are self-taught, but most of us need encouragement, contact, and guidance. When I chose to become a teacher, to be honest, it wasn’t my dream or calling. I had started studying law, but soon it became clear that it was not for me. To bridge my study year, I decided to become an au pair in England. English was my best subject in secondary school, and my teacher had tried – so far unsuccessfully – to encourage me to study English at University. I ended up in the beautiful village of Radlett (north of London), where every family lived in a mansion and had at least one au pair. Fortunately, alongside my thankless task as a nanny, I could also attend school to further improve my English. A special class was set up for au pairs and priests – I don’t know who came up with this peculiar mix, but it worked. The lessons were taught by Mrs. Hyslop, a teacher of exceptional quality. She prepared us for the proficiency exam and organized outings on weekends when we were off. We visited museums and English gardens with beautifully trimmed hedges, and drank tea served with scones and clotted cream. Back in the Netherlands, I finally decided to study English in Leiden, ultimately following the advice of my English teacher, Mr. Fokkema. The year I obtained my teaching qualification is the one that sticks with me the most. During my internship at a secondary school, I took my first steps as a teacher and had a fantastic mentor who taught the tricks of the trade. Full groups of bored teenagers witnessed my first steps as a teacher. With my qualification in hand, I embarked on my teaching adventure; teaching
English in higher education. Terrifying; I was only a few years older than the students. Yet, the seed was planted then. I loved teaching people new things and helping them progress. As a starting teacher, you may think that you mainly need to master your subject and have knowledge at hand, but a few years later, you realize there’s so much more. Showing genuine interest and being able to empathize with your student or learner makes you the special teacher, one that is not forgotten. I think of Miss Witvoet, who taught me everything about nature in elementary school and encouraged me to stand up for animal rights, and Mr. Piet Kramer, who played ‘Oh, Freedom’ on his guitar on Friday afternoons and taught me about slavery and injustice. They, along with my parents, influenced my choices and life. And of course, my English teacher too, and later my mentor, they truly made a difference. After all these years, they still have impact. Now that online tools, avatars, apps, and AI strongly influence our daily lives, I am sometimes asked if teachers will be replaced in the future? No, of course not. We need them, especially now. Ask yourself who or what has been important in your (learning) life so far. I bet you’ll name a teacher as one of the first.

The ‘flat cart’ is a phenomenon Eindhoven, a tradition that goes back decades, to 1975 PSV the fifth championship of the country fourth.
HONOURING CHAMPION ON MONDAY 29 APRIL
Eindhoven’s Finest – Honour PSV and the City
For weeks, PSV supporters in Eindhoven and the surrounding area and football journalists have been talking about ‘the flat cart’. The champions trailer can finally be taken out of mothballs, fit new tyres and drive through the city towards City Hall for the traditional ceremony on the steps. In front of a square packed with fans drunk with joy. On 29th April the time could just be right, after six years!
The Government and PSV have been worrying for weeks about the desirability of this carnivalesque festive cocktail: Eindhoven could be ‘turned upside down’ again for days. As this Eindless is released, there are still eight games to go in the Eredivisie. The gap between leader PSV and pursuer Feyenoord is ten points. If both football clubs win all remaining matches, the Eindhoven team will become champions of the Netherlands on Thursday, 25th April. PSV will play an away match against SC Heerenveen in the evening.
The ceremony could have taken place the next day, but the Municipality of Eindhoven has announced that it is currently scheduled for Monday, 29th April. “The Town Hall Square will be prepared with combined efforts after the festivities,” a spokesperson said. In any case, it means plenty of celebrations in the city because Friday, 26th April is King’s Day Eve and Saturday, 27th April is King’s Day. On Sunday, Stadhuisplein will be decorated to celebrate the championship.
EINDHOVEN’S FINEST
It won’t be the fans’ fault. They have been in a championship mood for weeks. With a PSV championship in prospect, they have also tinkered with ‘fan experience’ in a completely different area together with Eindhoven artists. A few months ago, a collective of artists, fans and people who care about the club and the city and actively promote this. was born under the name ‘EINDHOVEN’S FINEST’.
Although they prefer not to mention names, DJ La Fuente, Berk Music, Schorre Chef and MC Vals, Lampegastuh and Zany, among others, have joined, says the DJ and producer team RUGGED. Behind the scenes, they work hard with a lot of love and support from PSV on new music for the club, they say, from real ‘stadium hits’ to odes to players, the city and history. “It’s always good to be refreshed in the field of music and create something for everyone, right?” they mean it. The gentlemen make it clear that this is a collection of music and songs that will be available on Spotify. From the well-known singalongs, songs about players and pub music to tunes that are played after a goal is scored. Lyrics are also available so that supporters and enthusiasts can take note of the content and know what exactly they are singing instead of phonetically echoing along with the rest. Undoubtedly, one of the songs will emerge as a new champion song, RUGGED thinks. “The selection of songs has something for everyone. There will certainly be a song selected spontaneously.”
The attentive supporter has already heard a few songs, such as ‘Wij Staan Bovenaan’, when passing the stadium. “Keep an eye on all socials,” says RUGGED, “and remember the name ‘EINDHOVEN’S FINEST’. Soon to be heard on all music platforms!” n

André van Duin sang that there was a horse in the hallway. There once was a horse and rider in the middle of De Hospes in Leende. Operator Bennie van Hooff (64) is retiring and has put his business up for sale. It’s April and the bicycle café, a popular stopping point on various routes through the wooded area, opens its doors again.
TEXT: FRANK VONKEN | PHOTOGARPHY: CHARLOTTE VRHAGEN / DCI MEDIA
“I grew up in this café,” says Van Hooff, who has been running the shop with his girlfriend Franca for 34 years. “And my parents worked in the café for 42 years. My grandmother’s cafe was before that. Boy, I’m getting older, you can keep it going. No, it has been nice for Bennieke.”
De Hospes is located on various cycling routes. While cycling around Leenderstrijp, you can set a course to, among others, the Strabrechtse Heide, the Groote Heide and the Leenderbos. The Achelse Kluis and the Malpie are also not far away.
“It is no longer as busy as it once was,” says Van Hooff. “Many cyclists nowadays bring their own sandwich and thermos. And they sit down on a bench somewhere in the woods. And you hardly see those groups of evening cyclists anymore. In the past, our place was regularly full until late at night. A lot has changed in the past quarter century. Corona has of course also made a difference.”
Toiling on the terrace
Bennie van Hooff works seven days a week from April to November. At least, if necessary. “When the weather is bad,” he explains, “we sometimes don’t open. Because when it rains, cyclists don’t come. But when the weather is nice, there is still regular toiling on the terrace. I have a lot of respect for my girlfriend. Franca gets up every morning at a quarter to seven. Then she goes to work in a label weaving mill.
And in the evenings, she helps in the café. She also does this on weekends and during holidays. We have been together since 1982.”
‘All in all, I count my blessings. In 34 years, we have only been robbed once. Knock on wood’
And what’s the story with that horse? “There was something to do in the area,” said Van Hooff. “Suddenly my neighbour at the back entered the café on his horse. He grabbed a beer, his horse was petted by everyone. They left after half an hour, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Oh well, I can laugh about it.”
A good soup
Van Hooff points to his menu. “A small menu,” he says. “Bouncer, satay, minced meatballs, soup. And seven beers on tap. I have often worked alone: taking and preparing orders, serving, taking payment. If they order four bouncers at the same time, things will be tough. Nowadays that is certainly the case. People have become more harried.”
In all the years, Van Hooff has only had one very bad experience. “Ascension Day 2008,” he remembers. “Three people wearing balaclavas in the cafe. We were already closed. I heard something and went inside. They shone a flashlight in my face. And the gentlemen were not at all impressed by Bennieke. I stood there shaking in my underwear. The loot? A few hundred euros and some cigarettes. I then had everything properly secured. We have an alarm system and sixteen cameras. All in all, I count my blessings. In 34 years, we have only been robbed once. “Knock on wood”.
Van Hooff laughs. “They even talk about us in Spain,” he says. “It’s a long time ago. A couple came onto my terrace. The husband wanted tomato soup. We didn’t have a menu yet. And when it came to soup, I could only serve tomato soup. I said he’s lucky that we only have tomato soup. Yes, he knew that. Huh? He says that he and his wife were sitting on a terrace in Lloret de Mar a while ago. There they got into conversation with another Brabant couple. It turns out that both couples regularly cycled. That man asked the other couple on which cycling routes they have good soup. At De Hospes in Leenderstrijp, he got the answer: they have the tastiest tomato soup there.”
Boat
Bennie and Franca are selling the café. “But that is not that easy,” says Van Hooff. “Potential buyers have the best plans. When money has to be put on the table, things become a bit more difficult. We also have no children who can take over from us. But when it’s sold, I’ll be on my bike. And we’re going on holiday in the summer. That hasn’t happened in 34 years. I also have a fishing boat. That boat has barely been used. In bad weather the café was closed, but you could not go fishing because of that weather. And when the weather is nice you have to be in the café. But hey, we’re still open. You can just come by and have something to eat and drink on our terrace.” n
