Just a little more Eindless

This is the first edition in which the Eindless Magazine takes a new direction. With a slightly different look and emphasis on the content. From now on, Eindless will be composed a little more from a social viewpoint, listening even more closely to who we are and for whom we write. So that we can say sincerely and firmly: “We are Endless”. What remains is our passion for the Brainport region, warming up when we recognize commonality in our roots whether in Eindhoven or one of the surrounding villages. We are the contented people in the city and region; this is where we grew up or settled, we know the streets, districts and neighborhoods inside out. What is it that makes this region so unique? As far as I’m concerned, it’s the diversity and vitality of this area, all the excitement and opportunities around us, and of our shared past and future. There is a story in every encounter, every choice determines a direction. There is a lot of art and culture at the heart of every Eindless. And that is much more than just an evening walk through villages in the Kempen or stretching in the early morning on the Groote Heide.

We hope to inspire you to look beyond what you already know and do and offer you what could be. Eindless is creating a magazine that is for and by the people of this region. Our dream is that it will become a household name in the Brainport area and beyond - as a symbol of the lively, warm and creative district that we all cherish. Will you join this adventure? Let us know what you would like to see again. A slightly different approach, just a bit more personal. Just a little more Endless.

AMONG CULTURES: ROMANIA

Romania deserves to be better known for its immensely complex history, which is full of charm, and the Romanian people contribute to making it even more fascinating. We are very fortunate to have a large community present in our region. If you participate in the Romanian Day event on June 23rd, you can discover how vital the community is.

Vlad NicuIescuDincă

Vlad Niculescu-Dincă is an assistant professor at Leiden University in the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs in The Hague. Still, he is Eindhovenaar with a history of studying and working. As a volunteer, he brings his knowledge and experience to the Romanian School in Eindhoven, which he founded and runs.

Can you introduce the Romanian School?

“This weekend project started around 2008 and was sustained by local parents and teachers. The weekly activities are mainly addressed to Romanian children living in the Brainport area, helping them to keep in touch with their native language and culture and to integrate harmoniously into their adoptive country. At the same time, we aim to contribute to a broader sense of community by offering more and more activities open to all other Dutch and international kids and families.”

So, are these activities also aimed at the international community?

“Absolutely! We collaborate closely with the Eindhoven Library, the Holland Expat Centre South, the Heritage Language Education Network, and other organizations in the area to create several public events open for everyone. Let me mention two of the many events at the Public Library: a Creative Market celebrating International Women’s Day, made together with a group of enthusiastic Romanian Creative Women. On June 1st, the special appointment was held during International Children’s Day. Many international communities celebrate it since it was first proclaimed in Geneva in 1925 during the World Conference on Child Welfare. Romanian Day is open to everyone and offers the STREAM Science Festival for children, a guitar concert, a Summer Market, a Book Market (EN, NL, RO), a cooking contest, an embroidery workshop, a picnic, and summer games in a chill atmosphere.”

What is the STREAM Festival about?

“This is a science festival for all children, organized by community members. Through this project, we aim to showcase the research in the community in a way that is attractive to children and could inspire them to pursue a career in science and technology later. We organize several science workshops that are split into various themes: sustainability, robotics, Creative 3D, physics, biology, society, and reading. The festival sets itself apart in multiple ways: It is community-driven (run by volunteer experts), includes and promotes students, and is open to everyone. Being the first and, to date, the only STEAM festival in the Heritage Language Education Network in Eindhoven, it is offered by the members of the local Romanian Community. At the same time, we receive international guests from other universities (Utrecht University and TU/e).

The festival includes and promotes students. A number of volunteer students team up for each session. At the same time, students can showcase their own (final) projects. In this way, students can promote themselves and become living models for the attending children. The festival is open to everyone. Each session is also offered in English or Dutch and is promoted by various media outlets and network organizations.”

The number of residents with a migration background from Romania in the Netherlands was almost fifty thousand in 2023, of which more than ten thousand in North Brabant. This includes people born in Romania (the first generation) and residents born in the Netherlands and of whom at least one of their parents was an immigrant (the second generation). As Alina states, this group can be roughly divided into expats, students and migrant workers. And their families, of course!

In Dutch they say Roemenië or English Romania, in Germany the official name is Rumänien and in France it is Roumanie

The Romanian flag is a vertical tricolor with the colors blue, yellow and red from left to right. With blue for Wallachia, yellow for Transylvania and red for Moldova, each color represents a former principality and historical province, a symbolism that dates back to the 9th century.

Alina Totti is an energetic policy advisor for the Province of NoordBrabant. She combines an educational background in journalism and Eastern European studies with a deeply rooted passion for politics. Her first step toward moving to the Netherlands was working as a political analyst at the Embassy of Finland in Bucharest. She loves to say that she came for love and stayed for her career.

Can you share your journey to Eindhoven?

“My story resembles many of the women participating in the Women for Women program. I’ve been told a specific story about the Netherlands, but that story did not turn out to be true. I came here five years ago and started learning Dutch immediately because I liked it. I also quickly noticed that you need it if you want to have a good job. That helped me find an exciting position, which also inspired me to run for the European Parliament.”

& Alina Totti

How did you get to work for the Province of Noord-Brabant?

“I was volunteering for my Romanian political party in Amsterdam when the pandemic started. This was my first encounter with labor migrants, and my mailbox exploded with messages from people needing help. It was chaos, and I contacted the Province. They hired me to start a study about Eastern European labor migrants, who are essential to various economic sectors in the South, such as agriculture and logistics. It became a business case and a reality this January when five information points were opened in Brabant. We had an Expat Center for expats, who usually can find their way, but something else is needed to support this much larger group. Now, labor migrants can ask for help with problems like exploitation and registering at the city hall. I saw an opportunity to connect the international bubble to the Dutch bubble. I think there is curiosity on both sides; it is just that people don’t know how to build a bridge. I am very privileged and hope that more internationals will be involved in public administration, benefiting both sides.”

Does the local Romanian community need help?

“It is divided into expats, students, and labor migrants. The last category needs a lot of support; they are vulnerable and often feel like no one is in their corner. We need to pay more attention to the internationalization process because it is happening whether we want it. We must create a friendly atmosphere, give them what they need, and support the companies that employ them. Expats are thinking about schools and careers, labor migrants are thinking about how to avoid being exploited or get better pay, and students are wondering whether they should stay and what internship opportunities there are.”

What advice do you want to give to understand each other better?

“Being open-minded and curious is essential. Our community is diverse. We pick asparagus; we are researchers who invent things or students who set up start-ups on campus. You can have fantastic career opportunities you wouldn’t have elsewhere, and the freedom is outstanding. But it is sometimes challenging to miss home because visiting our families is also costly. If there is one thing I would love for Dutch people to understand, it is how difficult it can be to be away; you can sometimes feel very lonely.”

The Brain port wonder child

Brainporter: Klaas Dijkhoff

Eternally curious. Often optimistic. Sometimes annoyed, never afraid to give an opinion, but always as an intermediate point of thinking. After leaving national politics, Fun Lovin’ Liberal, Klaas Dijkhoff, positions himself as a strategic advisor closer to home. He is also a PSV Commissioner.

There was nothing, nothing at all. And it wasn’t even that long ago. A good 100 years. A city like Groningen already had 100,000 inhabitants, with us you had to collect everything around Eindhoven to not even get half of that.

You only achieved those numbers because a few years earlier a family business had acquired factory premises, at auction, cheaply although their plan was to start in Breda. The family was called Philips, the rest is a wonderful story. Beautifully recorded by Arno Kantelberg in his book “The Wonder of Eindhoven”. The wonder of Eindhoven has always been bigger than Eindhoven itself. We didn’t have a brilliant term for it yet, but Brainport existed long before we called it that. The miracle did not come from above, although the priest looked on approvingly. The miracle came from below, from the people themselves. Nothing grew from the sandy soil by itself. As a result, a mentality of cooperation and solidarity grew. No one got far on their own and nothing came naturally. There was no significant government in the region to whom you could shout that things had to be different. You had to do it yourself, in collaboration and smarter than anywhere else. Although we had pulled ourselves out of the clay by our own hair, success would not last forever and we had to rely on ourselves again. And more importantly: together. We started over again and again. With the power of unity, to work on a new miracle.

From lamps to CDs. From chip machines to design. We worked until the whole world noticed. The entire Brainport region is a wonder of human ingenuity, innovation and hard work. Especially a sense of community. Where government, companies and society are not opposed to each other, but realize that you build society together. Where companies understand that they not only create factories, products or homes, but also build a community. Where people do not live to work but are willing to work hard for a good life. Where the government is not a grumpy naysayer but looks at how things can be done if they contribute positively. Where the best football club in the country allows us to fall, cheering, into each other’s arms with “Brainport” proudly emblazoned on our chests. A place in the world that seemed destined for a lifetime of ‘ermoei trump’ and is now the smoothest-running economic engine in the country. With no other raw material other than the people and their mentality.

The miracle of Brainport, dear reader, is you.

Soils: the ground of our existence

Soils are the foundation of our lives. It is where our ancestors once lived and where future generations will build an existence. It is the source that feeds us. But the relationship between human and earth is also often strained. From land depletion and overproduction to land grabbing and (labour)exploitation. How can we re-ground ourselves in our environment?

The group exhibition Soils addresses these questions. International artists, designers, farmers and activists work towards more empathy for our soils. These makers dig beneath the surface. Using ancestral knowledge and tangible traces of other ways of thinking, they create a web of relationships. From Diewke van den Heuvel’s photographic work of the melting Alpine glacier to Wapke Feenstra’s visualization of the changing appearance of the cow. From the Maya house as an embassy for the Mayan culture by Suumil Móokt’aan to the New Rural Agenda Temple by art collective Jatiwangi art Factory.

T56 is a creative collective building located on the northeastern edge of the city, in the Vaartbroek district. The building was originally constructed as a car garage during the post-war reconstruction of the 1960s. Over the years, it has had many different occupants and has been used as a creative space since 2007.

Our cultural microcosm features 15 studios and workshops, 3 halls for activities such as dance, rehearsal space, and a gallery.

In our building, we create a space where art, design, culture, and creativity can grow and flourish in a free and relaxed environment. The gallery space can be used for large-scale and/or grand projects, not only to further develop ideas but also for presentations and exhibitions. Additionally, there is the opportunity to attend workshops offered by various users of the building, ranging from urban dance to Pilates, from Dervish to iron forging. In the multicultural and creative city of Eindhoven, our residents allow us to further develop T56, thereby giving back a building and space to the people of Eindhoven to further shape themselves and their city.

HIP & HAPPENING

Pact Woensel Zuid

Neighbourhood Workroom 360 and Opportunities for Children continue to work together on future social dreams such as lifelong learning, talent development, and other initiatives in the Woensel neighbourhood. Of course, they are not doing this alone. The Eindhoven Municipality, Cultuur Eindhoven, CKE, and Wij Eindhoven are just a few of the partners contributing to this effort day in and day out.

City Poet (Stadsdichter) Eindhoven

Eindhoven will not just have one new City Poet (Stadsdichter), but starting from 2024, there will be two new City Writers as well. In early July, the new City Poets and City Writers will be revealed. The successor to City Poet Iris Penning, who compiled her four years of work into the book “Sta ik hier een trui te zijn tussen alle stropdassen,” and City Writer Mark Groenen will be a new creative city collective. This collective will include the City Poet, two City Writers, and two creators from other disciplines. Together, these five individuals will collaborate over the next 18 months on various productions, publications, and public expressions.

Nominate Your Favorite Cultural Creator for the Eindhoven Cultuurprijs 2024

The Eindhoven Cultuurprijs will be awarded for the eighth time this year. At the end of September, the shortlist will be announced with three nominees per category. The final winners will be chosen by a jury consisting of Yasin Torunoglu (chair), Leontine Heuvelmans, Tom Loois, Iris Penning, and Mark van Rijt. The awards will be presented during a festive event on Monday, October 28, at the Effenaar.

Young Culture: 6 Weekends, 6 Talent Development Sessions

Over 6 weekends and 6 talent development sessions, young people are brought together in various locations to create and experience culture. With financial support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW), Cultuur Eindhoven can expand the programme and give this boost to youth culture.

DAE stays in Eindhoven

The Dutch Design Academy plays a crucial role in the cultural and economic dynamics of Eindhoven and contributes to the city’s international reputation as a centre of innovation and design. This includes the annual Dutch Design Week, organized by the DAE, which attracts approximately 700,000 visitors from around the world each year. This event firmly places Eindhoven on the map as a hub of innovative design and technology.

There was a moment when it appeared the institute might move from Eindhoven to Roermond, but this idea was quickly dismissed after loud protests and intervention from the design community. By remaining in Eindhoven, the academy continues to be a vital player in attracting creative talent and stimulating the local economy, allowing the region to benefit from the rich design environment known in Brainport.

The Birch Moves Along

As a child, I always played in the forest behind our house. I spent the whole day outside with a shoelace tied around my waist (no longer possible today) to create a tailored safari outfit like Paula from the TV series ‘Daktari’ wore. We acted as the animal doctors running a wildlife hospital in the middle of the jungle, alongside a monkey, a cross-eyed lion, and an elephant with a big bandage around its head. Not bothered by critical questions about the welfare of animal actors or ‘why on earth in the jungle?’, we had our childhood adventures. The forest was our domain, the trees our friends to climb, hang from, or hide behind. Perhaps this is where the seed for my love of nature and especially trees was planted.

I knew them by name and soon learned that it was better to eat a beech nut than an acorn. There was a birch tree in our garden that, at my request, even moved with us to our new address. My father loaded the graceful, white-barked tree with roots and all onto the roof of the car and found my wish quite normal. So, I wasn’t the only one who loved trees. For a long time, I had to do without trees. My parents separated, and we ended up living in a grey city with lots of concrete and apartment buildings. I missed the trees so much that I drew them every day. Using a fountain pen and ink, I made little artworks. From narrow to broad with increasingly finer branches and twigs. Later, in my teenage room, I didn’t have pop stars on the wall but posters of trees and lots of wildlife and somewhat melodramatic poems by Robert Frost: “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.”

Many moves followed, the last one being to Brabant. Eindhoven and its surroundings turned out to be very green. Lots of forests and parks close to home. I usually walk to work, first through the Genneper Parken with the babbling Tongelreep stream by my side. Then through the Stadswandelpark, strolling past the red weeping beech, the summer oak, and the sweet chestnut. Beautiful to look at, and it also makes me feel completely ‘zen’. It has long been known that ‘nature’ has a positive effect on our health, often bringing peace and comfort. After a busy and chaotic workday, I can recharge by taking my walk through the parks. The concept of nature is, of course, very subjective. For one person, it’s a visit to the garden centre; for another, it’s a walk around Karpendonkse Plas or a breezy afternoon on the Strabrechtse heide. In any case, it often does you good. Nature doesn’t always have to be outdoors. It seems that just watching a nature documentary can already lift your spirits and lower your heart rate while you’re slouched in front of the TV. I wonder why many of us have a connection with nature. I think it often has to do with magical moments from your childhood that stay with you. A sense of wonder at something very beautiful like a flower or landscape, a bond with an animal, tree, or plant, or a strong memory where you felt very happy, like me, running around ‘in the jungle’. Or is there perhaps a kind of spiritual experience involved? We can also keep it simple; just awaken your senses, tune in and go. Onto the paths, into the lanes..

‘““The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep’
ROBERT FROST

THE ISSUE

Are rich & poor moving away from each other?

The Brainport region is considered extremely prosperous, yet tens of thousands of residents struggle to make ends meet. To make daily life better for them, the umbrella organization Brainport for Each Other was founded. Local social aid organizations also help and support. They recently collected two thousand pairs of jeans, intended for everyone who could use them.

In April, the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP) published the results of a national study in the report: “The living environments of rich and poor”. This shows, among other things, that Eindhoven has great prosperity, but - just like the country’s other economic engine, Amsterdam - also a lot of poverty and the gap between rich and poor is widening. “Many people are doing well in the Netherlands, but not everyone,” writes SCP General Director Prof. Dr. Karen van Oudenhoven in the foreword. “While according to the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), more than 300,000 households have assets of one million Euros or more, other people are mainly falling short. Previous research by the SCP into contemporary inequality showed that 16% of adults lag behind in income, education, social contacts and health.”

Something to think about

The publication states that, in recent years, the worlds of the poorest and richest Dutch people have slowly moved away from each other. That at least gives food for thought, says Prof. Van Oudenhoven: “If those who are doing well and those who are struggling live in separate worlds, this is detrimental to society. Opportunities are unevenly distributed, and mutual understanding, trust and solidarity are difficult to achieve.” According to Van Oudenhoven, government policy plays a role in various ways: “The way people encounter each other also changes under the influence of technology, globalisation and regional developments.” Separate living environments are therefore also at the expense of social cohesion in neighbourhoods or networks resulting in more social unrest, less sense of connection with society and little trust in others. Because people increasingly live in bubbles of their own views, norms and values, they understand others less well. The feeling arises that those with power and influence look down on others. The additional discomfort leads to worries and annoyance about polarisation and to contradictions. An image formation to which online platforms contribute significantly. The SCP report also points to a second development in the Netherlands, that of increasing

spatial differences and socio-economic separation: “In recent years, regional inequality has also become an increasing source of concern.”

The SCP speaks of ‘great regional unease’, especially with regard to the Randstad and national politics. The fact that there is (too) little eye and ear for the regions in the country results in social dissatisfaction, which can be seen through the proverbial gap between the Randstad and the rest of the country.

Stronghold of high prosperity

Prosperity attracts certain, highly educated and highly paid, people. This is striking in a few parts of the country, including our Eindhoven region. Historical growth, favourable location in relation to well-paid work and highquality facilities strongly influence its appeal. How you view society is mainly determined by where you live. In terms of prosperity, Eindhoven stands head and shoulders above most cities in the Netherlands. Even though the Brainport region is called a ‘stronghold’ of high prosperity, it is also an example of the widening distinction between rich and poor. Because there are also many residents who cannot participate for various reasons. The conclusion is that because they live in their own, separate worlds, the gap is growing here as well.

Everyone moneywise, everyone in jeans

The two movements have been recognised in the Brainport region for some time. To reach as many people as possible and with the invitation to participate, municipalities, companies and social organizations have joined forces in Brainport for each other. High on the ‘social agenda’ is help to people with money worries, and the ‘Everyone moneywise’ campaign is aimed at making young people in the Brainport region money aware. 60% of Dutch people sometimes worry about money, according to Brainport for each other, which connects education, companies and social organisations, which benefits local groups. For example, the Clothing Bank Eindhoven uses charity mediation and company volunteers, while remaining active itself and helping approximately 7,000 adults and children with clothing in more than 2,000 appointments every year. Children’s clothing and basic clothing items such as jeans are always necessary. Samen voor Eindhoven had the idea of a jeans campaign, which resulted in no fewer than 2,000 items being collected. These ended up with people who needed them via the Clothing Bank (Kledingbank) and other local foundations such as Springplank, Ervaring die Staat, Inloophuis ‘t Hemeltje, Salvation Army and Neos. Because, for example, they no longer have enough money for clothing due to divorce, illness, job or home loss. In a similar manner, extra warm winter coats are also provided every autumn. So, although the Netherlands is one of the richest countries in Europe, there is poverty here too, says Samen voor Eindhoven once again: “Research by the SCP and CBS shows that single-parent families, people with a non-Western background, social assistance recipients and singles under 65 years of age have a high risk of serious poverty. Poverty is manifested, among other things, in (very) limited financial resources, social exclusion, health problems and limited access to education.”

Recycle surplus textiles

“Collecting clothing, passing it on, donating it to the Clothing Bank is giving to a good cause,” says Mieke Beentjes, Director of Clothing Bank Eindhoven. “We also raise awareness about unwanted clothing and the polluting textile industry. Because, of course, we have far too much clothing in the Netherlands and worldwide and we underestimate the impact of its processing. It is essential that we can give the clothing to a good cause. But that does not detract from the surplus. We cannot always use everything, and we want it to be disposed of properly. It has to go somewhere, with care for the environment.”

Green Utopia or Flop?

The EU’s brave leap towards sustainable entrepreneurship

The champagne corks popped, and confetti fell on 24th May. EU member states finally agreed to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). This revolutionary decision requires major companies to examine and address environmental and human rights matters in their supply chains. A colossal step towards stricter government regulation of global chains but be warned: the triumph is only the beginning of a long, challenging saga.

For four years, governments, companies, unions and civil society groups waged an epic battle over this directive. This spring the drama seemed to be at its peak. Negotiations threatened to fail and there were doubts whether the CSDDD would ever see the light of day. But now EU member states have finally put their cards on the table. They want to work on responsible entrepreneurship. Over the next two years they will have to translate the CSDDD framework into national legislation. Countries such as Germany and France are already ahead with similar laws, but now must adapt them to the new requirements. It is expected that governments will be confronted with a tsunami of resistance when the regulations become law. Because if enforcement becomes stricter and violators are punished, support from multinationals could quickly evaporate and many companies and trade groups will want to weaken transparency rules. Multinationals have a lot of influence and will place higher demands on their network. The chain of liability therefore lies not only with them, but also with all their business partners. Don’t underestimate this! In creating a system that holds companies accountable for their environmental and social performance, governments face three major challenges:

One: What does “due diligence” mean? Companies must proactively identify problems, a costly and time-consuming job. This can tempt them to downplay human rights and environmental risks. What data will you collect and how will you explain it?

Two: Many companies will claim that they are strengthening their internal sustainability processes. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, improved processes do not automatically lead to better results. In 2021, the EU introduced the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which outline what must be disclosed. A lot of paperwork, but no requirement that companies act as a vigilant agent for their direct and indirect business partners, although this may change under the CSDDD’s due diligence ‘duty of care’

Three: Governments must develop systems for better data collection and assessment to assess the companies’ performances and their global supply chains. This means that they must document whether health and safety standards have been met, salaries have been paid and whether bans on child and forced labour are being observed. Discouraging? Perhaps, but essential for the CSDDD system to succeed. Non-compliant companies can be pilloried or even expelled from Europe.

With the CSDDD, the EU is sending a clear signal that it wants to make companies globally responsible. A complex and ambitious undertaking that will undoubtedly encounter many obstacles. But also, a crucial step towards a more sustainable and fairer world. Provided everyoneparticipates in this green transition, of course. As EU countries tighten their legislation and enforcement, only time will tell whether the promise of the CSDDD becomes reality. The road to sustainable business operations is still long, with bumps, potholes and probably some major detours but this directive is a promising start.
