Summer in Brainport
Summer in Eindhoven, the city comes alive, in the region the heat sizzles. As we embrace the sunny days and long evenings, we invite you to travel along with us into the hearts and minds of the people who make our Brainport region so unique.
Eindless is more than a magazine, it is a journal. A collection of voices, ideas and experiences. With Eindless, we bridge the gap between residents of Eindhoven, international or not. Our mission is to promote the dialogue between inhabitants of this region, to share knowledge and broaden understanding. And to get to know each other.
In this issue, we offer you a glimpse of the vibrant, diverse and passionate communities that form the backbone of our Brainport region. Even as we acknowledge the complexity and innovative strength of Brainport Eindhoven, we also expose its social agenda. From closing the gap between the economically successful and the less privileged to encouraging wider participation in our social and economic life; Eindless is there to lead these important conversations and show what developments are happening and what is playing out. In doing so, we see many elements we face
In this edition, we present a wide range of stories and perspectives. From the vibrant summer festivals, theatre, music and exhibitions, the latest technological developments and tourism trends to fascinating interviews with artists, scientists and other influential figures in our society. Among them are singer-songwriter JW Roy, scientist Jan Rietsema and talented Brazilian violinist Kika Marquardt. Their voices are an essential part of the Brainport experience, providing a different perspective on what you yourself perceive or experience around you. We are honoured to share their stories with you.
as a society not as obstacles but as opportunities. Language barriers, cultural differences and many more. They are opportunities to grow, learn and forge strong ties within our diverse region.

For anyone who loves soul, blues and accompanying groove: English singersongwriter Jonathan Jeremiah has been compared to artists such as Scott Walker, Serge Gainsbourg and Terry Callier. His authentic, timeless sound combines acoustic R&B with soulful folk. On to Muziekgebouw Eindhoven!
In Eric van Schagen, CEO of Simac IT and chairman of NVO-NCW Zeeland Brabant Department, Eindless media has found a partner who is convinced of the need for a new communication platform that links people and organisations in the Brainport Region. He endorses the need for connecting people and companies living in the Eindhoven area and its surroundings. In other words, the whole of Brabant, with the region’s residents and interested parties in the context of Brainport.
Dear readers,
What a fun and interesting city Eindhoven is! World-class technology, design and many companies established here. That’s only because of all those people who want to live here. Just like at the beginning of the last century and the years after the war, many people found their way to our metropolitan region. They were and are entrepreneurs, people who have know-how and like to take things on. Without that mentality you would just stay where you are.
My parents came to work for Philips Eindhoven in 1950. Just like those people who are now moving here mainly because of ASML. We must welcome and embrace those people. They provide a good foundation, growth of our prosperity and thus a good future for us and our children. Of course, growth also poses problems, and we have to work on that. But you only have to look at shrinking regions to see that stagnation or decline leads to many more problems.
Our dynamic and international environment requires us to work on our city and region. The schools, care institutions, sport, culture and all other facilities will have to keep up with the growth. Entrepreneurship and an approachable mentality are also needed there. With the growing economy, resources are and will become available. Problems are there to be solved, and we have proven in the past that we can.
Brainport for everyone is a good start to allow us all to benefit from the growth of our Eindhoven. The mayor is our frontman, but it is everyone’s responsibility. This requires connection and communication. That is why it is good Eindless magazine has been launched, a new newspaper for the rapidly growing and increasing international population. A newspaper that informs everyone about what there is to do in the city and region, and it shows what we can be proud of.
A newspaper that connects us and ensures that everyone feels at home in this area. In a city where we work together, have fun and care for nature, our children and all the people who need it.
With this, Eindhoven has an endless future for everyone.

175 YEARS OF BOOKS IN THE CITY
Van Piere was founded 175 years ago. The largest bookstore in Eindhoven is celebrating this special moment throughout the year with various festivities. In addition to Dutch books, Van Piere has a large collection of English literature, including thrillers. Van Piere has always been in the centre of Eindhoven, first opposite the St. Catharinakerk,
now on the Nieuwe Emmasingel. The bookstore survived various storms, including the war and the Sinterklaas bombing on 6th December 1942 that affected a large part of the centre, and, more recent, a bankruptcy and the COVID pandemic. In fact, book sales are on the rise. They serve great coffee and tea at Coffelovers ... More info at www.libris.nl

Fast students
The Netherlands is proud of Formula 1 super driver and World Champion Max Verstappen. Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has developed a racing car that is just as fast: the URE17.
URE stands for University Racing Eindhoven. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/ in 2.1 seconds. The maximum speed is a bit lower than Max: 120 km versus 300 km. TU/e has a tradition when it comes to developing cars. The team has been in existence for twenty years and has already won a prize with a predecessor, the URE15.
NOT EVERYONE IS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THE ‘FAR-ENGLISHISATION’ OF OUR LANGUAGE
‘Sorry, don’t speak Dutch’
The Eindhoven region welcomes many new inhabitants. We notice this not only in the tight housing market and congestion on the roads, but especially in the language on the streets. Not infrequently, English is the language most heard; in cafés and restaurants, customers are addressed in English. Not all residents are that enthusiastic about this development. And wouldn’t internationals be better off learning Dutch to promote their social integration?
One-third of Eindhoven’s population is of overseas origin. One-fifth of the residents have a non-Western background. The rapid internationalisation of (the region of) Eindhoven is not only greeted with approval. There is increasing criticism of the inescapable fact that we are addressed in English. When ordering a meal or drink it may occur the responding of the waitress or waiter on duty: ‘Sorry, I don’t speak Dutch’, so we automatically have to appeal to our language skills and ability to improvise.
Columnist Petra Bies of the Eindhovens Dagblad recently called it irritating that she is constantly addressed in English in the hospitality industry. It surprises her every time, she reflects on her own oping, considering herself a woman of the world. She experiences
A few years ago, Rabobank investigated ‘brede welvaart’ in Brainport Eindhoven and noted dissatisfaction and latent contradiction. It turned out that residents are relatively dissatisfied with their lives. One in five gives his or her life an unsatisfactory rating. Despite all the economic success, we have not become happier. Everyone agrees that the COVID pandemic has had a further negative impact on that. This also applies to the ensuing energy crisis and increased inflation due to the war in the Ukraine. Housing satisfaction is declining because of a housing shortage, increasing rents and more expensive mortgages due to, among other things, rising interest rates. The researchers thought it was time for a broad prosperity agenda. We are now working hard on this via ‘Brainport voor elkaar’, the social counterpart of the economic success formula. In other words: there is just as much cooperation here to allow all people to benefit from prosperity.
difficulties switch between the languages. She understands that it is not always that easy to learn the language of the country. But even in residential areas, neighbours understand each other less and less. In addition to cultural differences, the language barrier stands in the way of spontaneous contact between the new neighbours. This not only seriously hampers social integration but can also be a source of misunderstanding and distrust. It turns out that the neighbourhood is not waiting for the community centre to be taken over by foreigners who sometimes want to celebrate their party here often.
We are not just talking about knowledge workers, but also migrant workers and status holders. At Vrijwillige Hulpdienst Eindhoven, they have noticed that language can be a barrier and that city residents are irritated by the ‘Englishness’ of the contact. They no longer feel at home in their own environment. A record number of asylum seekers is expected this year.
The government does not yet have an answer to this, while the pressure on facilities and housing is increasing. It has been found that this leads to dissatisfaction, irritation, and anger. People do not feel taken seriously by their own government. There is fear of social unrest in the long term.
GET SET!
Every reason to promote integration and thus understanding of each other. Brainport Development has even developed an online game for that purpose: Get Set! especially for international students.
Via www.getsetinbrainport.nl, they can get to know the Netherlands, its inhabitants and their culture. The challenge is to get as much Dutch as possible. ‘Willem’ guides the participant. And yes, he can be a bit aloof in the beginning. Willem advocates for a local friend who will show the way in society. Besides
getting acquainted with Brainport and its identity, the game starts with a favourite part of student life, especially in Brabant: drinks! And of course the informal goodbye ‘houdoe’ is part of the vocabulary. As is the regional delicacy ‘frites’. Essential is the shared ‘bakske koffie’. And we know the soft ‘g’ here. And so internationals are playfully introduced to our language, culture and peculiarities.
FEELING AT HOME
Albert Kivits, director of the Eindhoven Public Library, also has concerns about the language gap between foreigners and natives. According to Rabobank research, the inequality between highly educated knowledge workers and people from lower socio-economic classes is only increasing, partly as a result. Low literacy is growing, people with a lower education are relatively uninvolved in their further development, and the information and media literacy of both older and younger people increasingly leaves much to be desired. He believes the new ‘Dutch’ should learn our language. “Many internationals have a language and therefore communication problem. They do not learn Dutch sufficiently, which means they have less contact with their neighbours. In the long run, this can lead to loneliness etcetera. So the problem of low literacy is much more complex than we initially think.”
Language connects and makes you feel more at home
Language connects and makes people more likely to feel at home in a new place. As a developer of people, the library sees an important role for itself to counter inequality. ‘’We welcome new Eindhoven residents and make them feel at home. Language development and enjoyment are central to this, because language connects and enlarges your world. This is how we connect people who have traditionally lived in Eindhoven and new Eindhoven residents, so they’ll have more understanding for each other, understand more and learn more from each other.” n
Praat Nederlands met me/ Speak Dutch with me: Holland Expat Centre is giving away free badges , helping expats integrate into the region by speaking the language. Are you willing to help? Get one of these badges at Holland Expat Centre!
Who wants to learn a new language, can take on a course at STE Languages (www.ste.nl).
The Eindhoven Public Library is situated in the city centre, the De Witte Dame building at Emmasingel 22, and has a wide range of books in English. Also children’s books in many other languages including Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. For more information, see:

In residential areas, neighbours understand each other less and less
Kika Marquardt on ...
As a violinist Cristine Marquardt, ‘please call me Kika’, is a creative producer and event manager who connects people through music, arts and creativity.
With her husband Anderson Rabelo and daughter Victoria in 2022 Kika moved from Brasil to Eindhoven, Strijp S. As her partner works for ASML, Kika is part of the Expat Spouses Community and she is here to settle down and absorb the environment. What does she notice in the area? Searching for new opportunities? Good things take time. Instead of pitching herself to new prospects she prefers to share her skills by playing the violin. A connector by heart and mission.
... Music
I like to perform classical music because it challenges me and keeps my mind sharp and fast. To feel the energy of the audience, I like movie soundtracks. Its amazing! And I like to listen to Rock/Pop to clear my head or to focus in something. I listen Brazilian music, like MPB, just to smile and embrace my soul. My favorite spots are Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam
... Film
Visiting Pathé was one of the first experiences we had as a family in Eindhoven. Another very good venue here is Lab-1. A good story, with popcorn and the darkness of the cinema, who doesn’t like it?
... Food & drinks
However homemade food goes down really well, a good combination is quick travel, new places with good drinks and food. Do you agree with me?
We like to eat at the Saturday Market, whether here in Eindhoven or another city in the Netherlands. For a delicious afternoon coffee, go to Boekhandel Van Piere. For a pleasant late afternoon, get a drink on the banks of the Dommel River at Brasserie Restaurant Bolwerk in Den Bosch.
WHAT’S ON YOUR LIST THIS SUMMER?
We don’t have too much plans yet. We would love to see beaches in Holland like Egmond aan Zee. Feel the wind, the sand on my feet and a nice Rosé to celebrate summer.
... Happiness
I like to be on the move. If we are at the central station, taking a train to discover new places in the Netherlands or surrounding - it really energizes me!
I’m always doing something, never standing still. I’ve already made friends in the city’s music scene and am part of two orchestrasthe Philips Symfonie Orkest and the Symfonieorkest Eindhoven
... A walk in the park
Eindhoven is a nice city to walk around. I really enjoy walking along Anne Frankplatsoen or Stadswandelpark near Parktheater
... Art
Museums are mandatory in life, is my opinion. Getting to know the stories of work and life of artists opens up your range of repertoire for creative life. Some museums bring very unusual forms of interaction with the public, this really captivates me. I like the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, especially the way they explored the 5 senses in their exhibitions.
... Sports
Last year my husband participated in the ASML Marathon. This year we will be there together again. What I like most about these sporting events is the atmosphere of the city that vibrates along with each runner. It’s pretty awesome.
Decoding the Dutch Poldermodel and ‘doe normaal’ mentality
In today’s globalized world, understanding and navigating cultural differences is vital for successful business ventures. When it comes to investing in the Netherlands, foreign executives may find themselves intrigued by the Dutch Poldermodel. As a person born in China, I have experienced firsthand the contrasting decision-making approaches between China and the Netherlands. Join me on a journey as we explore this cultural phenomenon and uncover its potential for sustainable growth and collaboration.
The Dutch Poldermodel, also known as the polder consensus, is a unique concept that revolves around seeking consensus and finding common ground through negotiation and compromise. Imagine walking into a Dutch meeting, surrounded by diverse colleagues, where everyone’s voice carries equal weight. It’s a far cry from the hierarchical structure and avoidance of confrontation typically found in Chinese culture. But this is where the magic happens.
In Dutch meetings, it’s essential to share your thoughts, ideas, and perspectives openly. The Dutch value transparency and encourage individuals, regardless of rank or title, to express themselves freely. This can be quite a culture shock for someone accustomed to the traditional Chinese approach of respecting authority and seniority. However, by understanding the balance between honoring tradition and embracing the Dutch cultural setting, you can make the most of this unique decision-making process.
One of the remarkable aspects of the Dutch Poldermodel is its efficiency in reaching consensus. While Chinese companies face the relentless pressure of a competitive environment, often leaving little time for extensive discussions, the Dutch have mastered the art of swift decision-making. However, it’s worth noting that the broad support and implementation of these decisions may vary. As a foreign company penetrating the European market, it’s crucial to redefine your local corporate culture and devise a tailored HR strategy to attract and retain local employees, as well as effectively engage with suppliers, business partners, and potential clients.
Embracing the Dutch Poldermodel goes beyond adapting to a new decision-making process. It requires finding common ground between Chinese and Dutch cultures. Based on my experience, both cultures share the desire to create unity and harmony, albeit in different ways. The Chinese emphasize Confucian values of respect and harmony, while the Dutch champion inclusivity and the famous “doe normaal” (just act normal) mentality. By recognizing these shared aspirations, we can bridge and connect the East-West gap and collaborate more effectively. Trust me, when we understand each other, collaboration becomes natural and fun!
Very often, my team and I have the privilege of mediating between Chinese and Dutch management levels, witnessing conflicts rooted in miscommunications and the reluctance to be vulnerable. The Dutch value open communication, transparency, and the freedom to share concerns. Breaking through these barriers can lead to fruitful resolutions and better relationships.
My personal journey through the Dutch Poldermodel has been a rollercoaster of emotions, from tears of frustration to moments of enlightenment, forged friendships, and shared laughter. I am confident that by embracing the fusion of Chinese and Dutch cultures, we can build deeper understanding and uncover countless opportunities. The power of compromise and collaboration lies at the heart of this journey.
So, dear international executives, as you embark on your business endeavors in the Netherlands, remember to unlock the potential of the Dutch Poldermodel. Embrace the inclusivity, open discussions, and consensus-building that define this cultural phenomenon. By doing so, you will foster strong relationships, win support, and cultivate sustainable growth. Remember, it takes time, but the rewards after the open conversations are really worth it. Trust me.

SUN 27 AUGUST
Brabantsedag Heeze: The biggest theatre parade of the year!
Come watch and enjoy, be surprised, and amazed by the biggest theatre parade of the year! On Sunday 27 August, 16 theatre floats – as high as houses – with 2,000 actors will make its way through the streets of Heeze (just south of Eindhoven, in Brabant).
What started as a simple procession of farmers’ carts in 1954, has now grown into a true spectacle. Annually, Brabantsedag attracts over 40,000 visitors from all over the Netherlands and abroad. This event is all about the history and culture of the Duchy of Brabant (Hertogdom Brabant in Dutch), including a part of Belgium. This history is brought to life in innovative ways, every year within a theme. For the 64th edition, the theme is: Eureka! The float building groups are inspired by an invention, discovery, or theories. They come with brilliant translations and
inventions of their own. The result will be a rolling total theatre with original designs and innovative techniques, telling a complete story in a few minutes. On Sunday morning, Heeze will slowly get ready for the parade. You can enjoy plenty of entertainment, music, and street theatre before the big parade starts. From 13:30hrs, the immense floats come by in a twohour-long parade. You will be captivated by expressive and subdued theatre. Seriousness, comedy, reality, and fantasy alternate, bringing the history of the Duchy of Brabant back to life.
Children also enjoy the parade. The youngest spectators (up to 12 years of age) have free access to the event. This makes the Brabantsedag a day out for the whole family and the perfect end to the summer holidays!
Tickets for the Brabantsedag are available at brabantsedag.nl/tickets. For more information, please visit brabantsedag.nl.
Alleen met de goden (Alone with the Gods)
When Aaron is 11 years old, an unfamiliar man stands in the doorway. His father, Leen, knocks him to the ground. Not even that hard, but the blow is fatal. Leen ends up in prison, and Aaron and his mother Jo are left with a large debt. They struggle their way through life, always on guard.
Alleen met de goden shows the effects of poverty and of keeping your head above water when you have nothing. The story is permeated with disaster, but there is a strong positive undercurrent: if a person believes in their own strength, they can overcome a great deal. This performance was written by singer and writer Frans Pollux and is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Boogers

Protomartyr
Detroit band, Protomartyr, is everything post-punk stands for: confrontational, hard, full of sharp guitar work, but also layered and intelligent.
The latest album “Ultimate Success Today” paints an apocalyptic picture of how ugly the world actually is. Something the band has become very good at in recent years. On the leaning guitar walls, cello, saxophone and clarinet scrawl the slogans of chaos, like the soundtrack of an uncertain future. With the voice of prophet of doom Joe Casey echoing effortlessly over it - nonchalant, a little ironic and above all razor sharp in his sinister lyrics. Protomartyr is not for the optimist, but it will make you happy
EFFENAAR
Acid King + Ruff Majik
Acid King is the stoner doom band centred around frontwoman Lori S., who has been building her electric empire riff-by-riff for 30 years.

Jonathan Jeremiah
London singer-songwriter Jonathan Jeremiah combines gritty, acoustic R&B with folk-tinged soul, influenced by greats such as John Martyn, Serge Gainsbourg or Scott Walker.
Songs steeped in a 60s and 70s nostalgia, but which are anything but old-fashioned. Reinforced by a twenty-piece string orchestra and his own warm voice, his authentic and compelling ballads leave you with the feeling of a sultry summer evening. Also on Sunday 27 August, during his show in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.
Full of soul Americana
David Ramirez is a singer-songwriter known for lyrics taken from life from life. Not that Ramirez needs much framing, as he has a powerful voice that sometimes reminds reminiscent of Ryan Adams. And to that, David can also add a deeper register. Add to that his gifted songwriting skills and you can see why it’s not surprising when Ramirez is compared to greats like Jason Isbell and John Fullbright. David knows how to confess, but with a combination of blues, Americana and folk, he also makes unspoken words felt. Ramirez understands his craft and is compelling, theatrical and vulnerable.
Gavin James
The Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James knows exactly how to hit the right note with his vulnerable songs and crystal clear voice. With a career that has given him 1.8 billion streams on Spotify, diamond, platinum and gold records, two #1 albums in Ireland, a sold-out world tour and live shows with the likes of Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Niall Horan, Gavin James has definitely put himself on the map since his breakthrough single ‘The Book of Love’. The Irish singer-songwriter knows exactly how to hit the right note with his vulnerable songs and crystal-clear voice.

The Contented Man JW Roy
We live and work in Brabant. What makes this southern province of the Netherlands special? For the answer, let’s visit a genuine Brabander, musician, singer-songrwiter, composer JW Roy, born in Eindhoven and raised in the village of Knegsel, in the suburbs. After years of residence elsewhere, he returns to the Kempen, where he will settle in the beautiful village of Waalre.
In the garden behind the old presbytery in the heart of Knegsel, theater association ‘t Ros rehearses the performance
“The Fate of the Hoeks brothers”.
Singer-songwriter J W Roy wrote the music. “It is nice to see how the people of Knegsel lend their knowledge and skills to the community. Everyone who participates in this production has lived or lives in Knegsel. Actors from outside Knegsel also take part in the performance and the director is cabaret artist Jules Keeris, son of Ad Keeris, who is still chairman of the theater association.
“There is so much love put into this piece, it would be impossible to create it in any other way. We give something back, that is so special.”
The Kempen and culture, do they go together?
JW: : “Put down the chairs, let the performance just happen. You must have the feeling that there is no threshold, and that you as an audience can just go. A theater or museum doesn’t have to be so static; you can also just receive people. So, let’s do it, it will work itself out. If you know the core of people, know each other’s culture, and you can truly see each other, then it is very special how they treat each other here. I have written a plan for the Kempen. You shouldn’t even use the word culture. The more you name it, the farther it goes.”

Are you a content person?
“We used to have the figurine of “De Contente Mens” (The Contented Man) at home. The poem beautifully expresses the soul of this environment. The people of Kempen show that you can make beautiful things very relaxed with the right people. It all comes across as very relaxing and they do it just like that. That’s always really nice work. And that exactly ís that contented person: curious, innovative, and satisfied.
Just like “De Contente Mens”, I expect a lot from life and I am not afraid of the new. You have to see each other and find each other, when you see each other, the new is not so frightening and you’ll automatically move forward.”
After all your wanderings you now chose Waalre. How do you avoid coming down to earth with a bump?
“I’m a bit nostalgic, as you can hear in my book Kouwe Kermis and the songs about it. By going to Brabant, I am not going back to where I came from, but I am taking a new step forward with my family. My older children are already quite independent, my five-year-old daughter will feel at home here. My wife Femke, Josephine and I are so looking forward to this new adventure. A house on the edge of the woods. Discover the city of Eindhoven, explore the area. It really is an inspiring environment.”
A step forward, in a region that looks ahead. Sounds good.
“This region fascinates me enormously. The activity of tech companies and startups makes it an interesting and active environment. It is simply spectacular how the ambition of the area has been maintained over time. Very inspiring. The environment though, hasn’t really changed that much. The area is booming, thcommunity is thriving, and the strength of

Life as well as its nature made him somewhat philosophically resigned.

the region is underpinned by its resilience. People are prouder now, which is nice to see. The hospitality of the Kempen people touches me deeply, something that I experienced when my father died a few years ago and a neighbour brought food every day without expecting anything in return. The concept of the ‘Contente Mens’ in Brabant culture is an enchanting notion. It’s the idea of finding contentment and happiness in simple things, experiencing the joy of life without the need for grandiose gestures or huge ambition. It doesn’t mean that people don’t have dreams or goals, but that they can recognize and appreciate the beauty of the present moment. It is this sense of calm rural tranquility that you will find in the simplicity of the Kempen.
time, I remember the old rivalries between neighbouring villages and the reluctance of people to attend a performance in Eindhoven. Still, once they make the move, the experience is fantastic. n
JW ROY made name as a singer-songwriter with Americana music. He switched to Dutch and Brabant dialect and co-wrote ‘As ge ever’ with Nuenen singer Gerard van Maasakkers. In 2010, he released the book and CD ‘Acht Zaligheden’ in which he expressed his love for the Kempen. He did so again in 2022 with ‘Kouwe Kermis’. As guitarist, JW has been part of the annual, ‘Brabant’ music event ‘Groots - met en zachte G’ - by Tilburg singer-songwriter Guus Meeuwis in Eindhoven’s Philips Stadium for years.

Barbie
DIRECTOR: GRETA GERWIG
The president is a woman, the sun always shines and the sixpacks are as smooth as PVC pipe: in Barbieland, everything and everyone is perfect. Unless you have an existential crisis. Or if you’re a Ken who falls for a Barbie who doesn’t like you.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a movie that maybe no one asked for, but from the moment we saw Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie rollerskating through L.A. in fluorescent pink suits, we knew: this is what we need. And if we trust anyone with a bottle of peroxide and a pink convertible, it’s Gerwig, Gosling and Robbie. This is a Cult Classic in the making, so don’t miss it.

This film will not only blow you off your seat with the thunderous score full of bass, but also with the quality of the images that were shot with IMAX® cameras. Chameleontic jubilee expo MU changes content completely
Hybrid Tales For Hybrid Times, the jubilee exhibition with which MU celebrates its 25th anniversary this summer, is like a chameleon that changes color and even content over time. If you were at the cheerful opening on May 5, you should not think that you have seen everything, but come back in the coming weeks, because there is a lot of new to see. That’s what you get with hybrid exhibitions!
Gone are the playfully poignant Home Sweet Home sugar house by collective Vis-à-Visa and Lucas Maassen, the Guangzhou Wedding of Things by MacGuffin and Alexandre Humbert, the United Mental States by Emma Verhoeven and The Artificial Self by Lukas Völp and Eroliteracy by Nikola Scheibe Instead, Tripl/Furious’ Repainting Subway Art, which is much talked about in graffiti circles, can now be seen. At least as special is the multimedia installation/ performance To Be Continued with which the adventurous collective Nineties Productions, Moniker and Noralie not only stretches our sense of time, but also the boundaries of what acting means in our digital age. Rhetorical Bodies by Paula Strunden goes one step further - an XR or extended reality installation in which two people meet as liquid bodies in a digital landscape where they experience while dancing what it is like to move beyond our skin. And the Portuguese activist street poet & artist Wasted Rita also takes you on a VR journey, sitting in a beach chair at a fake sunset to a digital landscape.
Arvid & Marie’s Full Body Smart Automatic Manipulator will also disappear, and To Be Continued will make way for Zwermers and later Li Binyuan in July. They are now also enriching this project with a digital component for which they are given the space at MU to experiment with the public. Hanneke Wetzer, MU’s in-house photographer, will be taking over a space from July by fusing her beings and socials into the installation #beingyourselfie.
And the Chinese visual performer Li Binyuan is also an old acquaintance. His first solo in the Netherlands in 2018 was a revelation for many. From the end of July we will be showing his latest, most extensive film work to date: Building a Museum, in which he takes on the dual role of construction worker and artist.
The proud feeling called New Dutch
Eindhoven has been a city for 791 years. While that assumes a rich past, New Eindhovenians prefer to look to the future: ‘There is more to see through the windscreen than in the rear-view mirror.’ New Dutch is the movement of Dutch people who appreciate history but mainly focus their gaze forward, telling the story of a country that is innovative and creative. And that gives a surprisingly different view of the Netherlands, argue Erik van Gerwen and Peter Kentie of Eindhoven365.
Where else but in the city and region of Eindhoven, where the future is made, could a ‘movement’ like New Dutch have evolved? Intended to achieve strong, future-oriented ‘national branding’ in response to the stereotypical story told about the Netherlands: that of clogs, tulips, windmills and the Golden Age.
The country’s now negative image (transit port for the international, criminal drug trade) no longer matches its romantic identity, concluded ‘case manager’ Erik van Gerwen, responsible for international PR & Media at city marketing organisation Eindhoven365. Rotterdam came to the same conclusion. Nor did this modern port city still recognise itself in the story of the Netherlands. On top of that, Eindhoven and Rotterdam were tucked away in the ‘residual category’, Urban & Design by the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions although there is obviously much more to experience. So, the two decided to tell their own story, aimed at the curious visitor to the Netherlands who wants to look beyond the Rijksmuseum, bulb fields and cheese. The central government has since embraced New Dutch as the complete story about the Netherlands of today and the future.
INNOVATIVE IMAGINATION AS A GUIDE
“A Netherlands that is innovative and creative,” Erik clarifies. “A Netherlands you can experience and visit and feel, taste and smell in regions
like Rotterdam and Eindhoven. I think you have to tell the complete story so that visitors have more choice. After all, they don’t just want to go back to the past, they want to be inspired.” Colleague and Eindhoven365 Director, Peter Kentie, adds: “We don’t want to sway the visitor looking for tulips and windmills to come, nor do we want to frantically change the traditional image of the Netherlands. What we do want is to make it clear to visitors interested in New Dutch that there is a new Netherlands that is also part of contemporary Dutch culture.”
“It also fits with NL Branding’s motto: ‘Solving global challenges together’,” Erik continues. “With our imagination, we come up with attractive, innovative solutions that can be used not only by ourselves but also by others around the world.” Peter: “It would be great if the Netherlands could take the role and be a guide in the developments the world is undergoing. In doing so, you have some frontrunners and they do need to be shown. Tourism can be a first trigger.”
MENTALITY OF FREE THINKING AND MAKING
While Eindhoven has fewer iconic buildings, it does have festivals like Dutch Design Week and GLOW that tell the story of New Dutch. As random other examples in our region, Peter mentions Phood Kitchen Eindhoven, Vincent’s Lightlab in Nuenen, 250K and RetroFuture at the Evoluon. “But also think of Philips’ inventions. An example of New Dutch is Bluetooth and WiFi, they have their origins in the Netherlands; why don’t we tell that story?”
New Dutch, he says, is above all a mentality of thinking freely, making, undertaking, taking on and solving challenges unconventionally. “Van Gogh did all that too and had a huge influence on the art world as a

result. In that sense, New Dutch is also a feeling we have in the Netherlands, which we may not always be able to put into words, but which makes us truly Dutch. A feeling that we are familiar with in the Eindhoven Region and that we can powerfully share nationwide. In Eindhoven, for instance, we have 3D printed houses made of concrete in which people live with a real postal code. This shows that 3D printing can contribute to the housing challenge. It led to international media like The Guardian and The Economist coming to Eindhoven to write about it. However, you have to make it experienceable. It’s about visitors who reinforce our identity and can appreciate our mentality.”
Erik: “That’s why we focus our campaigns on the why question: as Dutch cities, why are we doing this?”
MOONSHOT 2050
Also related to New Dutch is a moonshot, the proverbial dot on the horizon, and that is 2050. In view of the urgency and necessity of the New Dutch movement, the plan arose to start celebrating the future in 2025 with a themed year in which we take 2050 as the focal point. Other parties in the Netherlands, including cities and companies, are explicitly invited to join in.
and showcase the Dutch brand with pride. Meanwhile, the Ministries have embraced New Dutch and are fully engaged. 2025 is the starting year for activating the movement.’’
Peter cites Amsterdam as an example. The capital will be 750 years old in 2025: “Amsterdam tells the classic story but also stands for the NDSM island, big tech events and the fintech world: all spot-on New Dutch. Or take Den Bosch, city of hospitality and data. That data part can put Den Bosch in the shop window, perfectly.”
When will the movement be successful? According to Peter, it will be when it is normal and New Dutch becomes a description of quality, where people recognise a certain development as ‘typically New Dutch’. “When the term lodges in people’s hearts in that sense and (laughingly) is in the Van Dale (Dutch language dictionary), then for me it will have succeeded.” n

Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk draws the inspiration in his recent work from the discovery of the baby mammoth Lyuba in Siberia, which seemed perfectly preserved sleeping in the permafrost. Lyuba probably died by drowning in mud, out of sight of her mother, making her apparently peaceful sleep an illusion. The inner world of experience and the visible outside world alternate in Aagie Linssen’s work. Reflecting light on the water of the city canal or on a lake in the woods are the starting points for her paintings. Mobility and continuous change are the temporality of this and therefore also of our existence.

HistoricAll!
How do we tell the history of design? And who is it told by? Which stories have been neglected and how can they be uncovered and, perhaps, re-told? What are the tools we have learned and is it possible to unlearn them? What can we learn from each other? Where do we go from here?
HistoricAll! presents collective and individual works by 27 participants made during a series of workshops by curators, design practitioners, and researchers who facilitated alternative ways of speaking and thinking about design history. With, for example, dance, cooking and hidden stories in objects as starting points for new and more inclusive ways of speaking and expressing design history told in different voices. A riso-printed zine HistoricALL!, was made to document this collective re-writing of design history. The zine is on display and for sale at the exhibition and online.

A growing cricket community is making regular use of the first public cricket pitch in the Netherlands, in Meerhoven. Training, workshops, social events, tournaments; beginners and advanced players know where to find the ESCC ground for this exciting sport. Especially in the summer. The second T10 Tennis Ball Cricket Tournament took place over two weekends in June. Data analyst at Philips Development, Ram Thadigotla, and a Tech consultancy manager, Praveen Kypa, are the co-organisers. Eindless spoke to them on the pitch.
Ram: “In 2007, seven Philips colleagues started the Eindhoven Social Cricket Club (ESCC), now an official site. The goal: to bring people together, with cricket as a means. User friendly, people can register for a place using a google sheet document.”
Praveen: “The demand is high. for the sign up we have 120% take-up for usage of the pitc. For our tournament we had 28 teams sign ups within two days in June last. We can only let 16 teams participate in four days. So, we unfortunately had to cancel 12 teams.”
Ram: : “We want to ensure local recognition. People in the immediate vicinity: the city and the region around it. The fact that we already have national teams participating in the tournament shows how popular this form of cricket is. It is therefore the largest Social Cricket Tournament in the Netherlands. Here in Meerhoven on a public Cricket pitch! We are extremely grateful for the opportunity that the Eindhoven Municipality, Jasper van Hoof and Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers have been of great support for. We are grateful for our good relationship with the Meerhoven Neighbourhood Association.”
Praveen: “When we came to live in Eindhoven, about 15 years ago, we thought it was important not only to find work, but also to do sports and meet people. This is important for most the players here. They are also internationals. Through Social Cricket we shape the communities and ensure that people get to know each other.”
TYPICAL CRICKET
Cricket also has its own unique language, with terms such as ‘wicket’, ‘over’, ‘run’
bat instrument to hit the ball with batsmen players batting bowler player bowling the ball to the batsman stumps set of three wooden sticks topped by bails (two smaller pieces of wood balanced on the stumps) wicket set van drie houten stokken fielders players not batting or bowling bat-en-bal a category of sports or games in which a player, the “batter,” strikes an object, such as a ball, with a round or flat bat over set of six balls bowled by the same bowler social cricket played with a soft cricket ball.
International cricket is played in 3 formats:
Test Match this traditional, 5-day, cricket match is held at international level. Each team bats, bowls & fields twice
ODI One Day International. A shorter version of the game. Each team gets 50 overs to bat/bowl
T20I High scores in rapid succession during the Twenty20 International, with each team given 20 overs to bat/bowl. The T20I is the game’s shortest format.
“Cricket is a game played by 22 people, and in the end the English win.”
- Sir Ian Botham, former England cricketerTEKST: CLAIRE VAN DER ELST | FOTO’S: EDDIE MOL
Praveen: “Eindhoven is really home to us. I also want other people to experience it that way.”
Ram: “Eindhoven has changed over the years. When I started working at Philips 15 years ago, there were not that many foreigners in Eindhoven. With growth, the rapid change in the city and an expanding social community we meet a lot of people. Our children play badminton, here as well you can see the population has changed. Children from all over the world play sports together. That is nice to see.”
Praveem: : “Turkey, Eastern Europe and India. Many of the consultants Crayon Consulting come from abroad. Showing people the way and helping them integrate into Dutch society is my passion. Social initiatives such as organising this cricket event – that suits me. When we came here there was not much structure and the paths for newcomers had not yet been explored. We hope to be of good help for newcomers.” n
BAL-EN-BAT
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game that originated in England and is popular worldwide, particularly in countries such as India, Pakistan, Australia, and the West Indies. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the sport’s regulatory body. A cricket match is played between two teams, each consisting of eleven players. The game takes place on a grass field with a 22-yard-long pitch in the middle. Due to England being the country of origin, cricket is traditionally played in the summer months. Training takes place indoors in the winter.
The team that scores the most runs wins.
The team batting tries to score as many runs as possible, while the team bowling and fielding tries to get the batsmen out and does everything possible to limit the number of runs scored. After a certain number of overs or when all batsmen have been eliminated, the teams switch roles.

Technological innovation plays an increasingly important role in sports in Brainport Eindhoven. This also applies to cricket. Technology can be developed to improve the sport on a professional and amateur level. Think advanced statistical analysis to inform game strategies or sensor technology and biomechanics to improve player performance. It’s also possible to give cricket a more strategic role by: partnerships for larger cricket events and competitions or integrate and share knowledge in education and community programmes on vitality. Working with cricket organisations to promote the sport can become part of the wider marketing and promotion activities of our region, both locally and internationally.
SOCIAL CRICKET

It started with building a canopy in front of their parents’ house. Kenan Mert and Faruk Bilici, Turkish from origin, could not have imagined that their hobby would grow into a thriving, fast-growing business. They managed to do so partly thanks to their cousin Furkan Aydin, who is now at the helm of MB Veranda. With help from Rabobank, the Eindhoven-based company expanded enormously in a short time.
Above the door of the showroom a poster mentions their ambition ‘In 2023, Europe’s number one’, written in Dutch, English and Turkish, among other languages. ‘My uncle wrote that years ago,’ says CEO Furkan. ‘Whether we’ll succeed this, I don’t know. It is our aspiration.’ It tells directly something about the direction they want to take. In 2017, Furkan stepped on board of his uncles’ company. Which was then still in its infancy. ‘Not an easy choice, as I had a good job in commerce, but I have absolutely no regrets. We have built a beautiful company, of which I am proud of.’
FOREIGN MARKET
MB Veranda makes, among other things, canopies, sliding walls, verandas and awnings. They sell these mainly to dealers and
installation and assembly companies, but also directly to private individuals. ‘Our products are customised. That saves the assembler a lot of work, we know from experience and it is unique in our industry.’ Thanks to Furkan, foreign markets were tapped. Besides Dutch customers, MB Veranda has buyers in Belgium, Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Germany, among others. ‘Our eastern neighbours are particularly enthusiastic. That’s where 60 per cent of our sales currently take place.’
BEING BOLD
Still, it didn’t come easy to the three Turkish entrepreneurs. ‘We do not come from a wealthy family. My uncles mainly worked very hard.’ That soon proved true for Furkan too. ‘I’m here every day, including weekends. With MB Veranda, on top of my mind day and night.’ While his uncle’s still work in production and assembly, Furkan is involved in sales and strategy of this rapidly growing company. The reason for that growth? ‘In Turkish culture, trust is very important. We do what we say. And if I’ve learned one thing, it’s: dare to take well-thought-out risks.’
‘We do not come from a wealthy family. My uncles mainly worked very hard.’
‘MB Veranda is growing fast, I’m proud of that’
FUTURE
But with growth comes growing pains: for instance, MB Veranda’s current premises are becoming too cramped. The company is therefore looking for a larger, future-proof premises, where production and sales come together and where (more) processes can be automated. I regularly discuss these and other challenges with Rabobank SME Advisor Ronald Saak. We appreciate the fact there is one point of contact within the Rabobank and that I can always contact him.’ n
MAATWERK BIEDEN
Among other things, Ronald helped MB Veranda finance an additional production hall. ‘Also, the entire insurance portfolio has now been transferred to Rabobank and several private financings for shareholders were arranged last year. Some more investment financing solutions are on the cards soon. Our contact goes beyond that, as I have seen many companies from close by over the past 20 years. I have accumulated knowledge and a network and on a regular basis I deploy my network. For instance in Furkan’s search for a new business location. Actually, I see quite a few similarities between Rabobank and MB Veranda. It’s not ‘just finance and move on’. I think along and offer tailor-made solutions. Exactly what Furkan and their colleagues do for their customers. Moreover, Furkan is also commercially very strong. And he is daring. It’s very clever what Furkan has built up with his uncles.’

Garden contemplations
It is 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning and have been bent over in our garden for a while now. Gardening is fun, but weeding is less so. My cats lie at a distance watching me with full bellies and with a slightly mocking expression on their feline faces. “Look at her, we won’t be doing any work today, we’ll spend most of the day lounging around, just moving from one patch of shade to another, because it’s going to be a sunny and hot day.” For me, working in the garden is a way to reflect on the past week which as usual was hectic.
Although... Thursday morning, after a work breakfast, I treated myself to a cappuccino with an extra shot at the train station. The city was still quiet, shop doors were beginning to open, and early customers were waiting impatiently to get in. There weren’t many people around until my gaze fell upon groups of young men with plastic bags containing their belongings, loudly chatting and drinking beer in the early morning. My thoughts wandered... Are these the migrant workers brought here to fill the labour shortage, but something went wrong? And how did this happen? And most importantly, what’s next? I felt uneasy; I’m aware of the problems and challenges, but I also know so many success stories.
Many of our labour migrant students have found their way and live happy lives.
As I walked to my car, I thought about breakfast with the expat spouses, mostly women who come to the Netherlands with their partners and are also searching but in a different way. They are seeking meaning, appreciation, a new career, and are driven and determined. It saddened me when I heard about their depressions and loneliness they face at the start of their lives here. Do their partners know about this? And their partners’ employers? I take another sip of my cappuccino and suddenly feel a warm trickle running down my blouse. “Damn,” I exclaim aloud as I look at the lid on the ground. “It wasn’t properly sealed on my cup.” I see my light blue blouse slowly turning brown. Time for action (a clean blouse, that is) and to stop asking myself questions (or rather, questions meant for others). Once changed, it’s really time to go to work. When I arrive, someone is already waiting for me. It’s a former student with whom I have an appointment. He has come a long way; he fled his home country, leaving everything behind because he had no life and was in danger. It was very difficult for him in the Netherlands; learning Dutch, the cold and rain, he couldn’t connect and suffered from depression. We were able to help him. Thankfully, things are going well for him now. He has a job, a place to live, and he’s here to tell me about it. Bless him. It’s getting too hot to work in the garden, so I’m going to stop. My neighbor has also put away his garden tools, and together we contentedly look at our completed work. I’ll take it easy for the rest of this day; tomorrow the workweek begins again.
Mathilde Lageman Director & c0-owner STE LanguagesSMART BIOMATERIALS CONSORTIUM
Makes medicine of the future possible
On the Eindhoven University of Technology Campus, people are working hard on new biomaterials that will radically change healthcare. Thanks to Smart BioMaterials Consortium, a new partnership of around sixty companies led by Health Tech innovation strategist Jan Rietsema, these materials will reach the market faster.
TOP 5 IN THE WORLD
SBMC is not just located in Eindhoven: “The Netherlands is in the world top 5 for scientific research into regenerative medicine. LUMC in Leiden has long been very good at stem cell research, the universities of Utrecht, Maastricht and Eindhoven are equally advanced. Patients notice too little of this because the move to the market is often difficult. This requires a lot of money and development facilities. To prevent a lot of Dutch knowledge from disappearing abroad, the government is encouraging this regenerative medicine to create a new industry.”
SBMC, which now has a team of twelve, has been based in the Catalyst building in the TU/e grounds since January 2022 and is making a flying start: “We started with three empty rooms. Now we have three labs up and running and we are working on the first customer orders.”
CONTRACT RESEARCH FOR BIOMATERIALS
What exactly is and does SBMC do? Jan Rietsema: “We work in high-tech life science: biomaterials for regenerative therapies. That is the medicine that allows the body to repair itself. For example: when cartilage in a joint wears out and breaks down in osteoarthritis, such a therapy can encourage the body to regrow that cartilage. Therapies are also under development for retinal growth and repair in certain eye conditions. The Xeltis and STENTiT companies are also based in Eindhoven. Xeltis develops cardiovascular materials. Their artificial valves and artificial vessels replace the human body with endogenous tissue. TU/e spinoff STENTiT makes implantable stents from biomaterial that allow vessel walls to grow and then the stents slowly dissolve. Such materials are not rejected, you do not have to take medication for them and there is no foreign substance in your body that can cause problems. We do contract research for such biomaterials. So, we don’t develop the therapies. We do have the facilities and knowledge that companies can use to bring their therapies to market faster.” SBMC has
laboratories for this. Jan: “One for processing and analyzing material, a cell biology lab for cell culture and an associated lab where we study cell behavior and material interactions. In the foreseeable future, we will build another pilot plant with a clean room for the pilot production of bio-implants. It should come to the Eindhoven High Tech Campus next year.” In a lab, Jan points casually to a streamlined device the size of a hefty coffee machine: “A Thermo Fisher Scientific (formally FEI in Eindhoven) electron microscope, developed and built by FEI and Philips in collaboration with NTS and Sioux, among others, so one hundred percent Brainport.”
We will soon notice something of the new medicine, Jan says with confidence: “In the coming decade we expect a major turnaround in medicine from companies such as Xeltis and STENTiT. Osteoarthritis therapies will also be introduced to the market soon. Then medicine is no longer concerned with treating symptoms, but with restoring vitality and health.”
Furthermore, SBMC’s biomaterials will contribute to drug research and development. “You can test medicines on human tissue, without test subjects and laboratory animals.”
SHARING KNOWLEDGE
“We prefer working with our consortium members on the development of new biomaterials. Large and small companies can also rent our facilities. This is ideal for startups that cannot afford such facilities yet. But also large corporates that come to us for cell biological knowledge or our expertise on important quality control of the strict laws and regulations by the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) .”
The future dream is to make donor organs redundant
‘No longer treating symptoms, but restoring vitality and health’
In the consortium network, the sixty or so companies know how to find and contact each other easily. And that is already paying off, in addition to osteoarthritis and bone breakthroughs, among other things. Jan: “They will come within the next five years. We have just submitted a project grant application with the Eindhoven startup Vivart-X. The aim is to develop a biodegradable matrix material for breast cancer patients to regenerate healthy breast tissue for breast reconstruction. And SBMC also supports a project by STENTiT, Vivolta and Corbion, who are jointly developing a regenerative stent for shop window legs. That is a progressive and peripheral artery disease that severely affects the blood supply to the feet. The absorbable nanofibers must be able to regenerate the artery from the inside.”
PUBLIC ACCEPTANCE
All these and future projects involve more than just lab work. Jan:“Transparency. As a society, we need to work towards public acceptance of these sorts of therapy, including addressing ethical issues. Stem cells are primordial cells; they can grow into any body cell with external factors, from
muscles or skin to other organs. Embryos are no longer necessary; we can return mature cells to the stem cell stage.” So, the science is there? Jan: “Yes, patients are waiting for it, and it makes healthcare cheaper. Therapies are becoming available to larger groups worldwide, so health inequalities are narrowing.” n
