Art at uLethbridge Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? What value does creativity hold in modern society? How has creativity helped shape societies in the past? As an art student, you will explore these kinds of questions, investigating the roots of your own creative experience and view of the world. Your degree will begin by studying how art connects us with the world, exploring familiar subject matter in new ways. From this foundation, you will explore a wide range of artistic media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photo-arts, printmaking, audio & video recording/editing and digital media. You’ll also delve into art history, studying the masters in the context of their time and place. You will learn how their creativity and social situations caused one evolution after another in the art world, and in many cases, influenced the rest of the world around them. The Student Art Society. The Art Society promotes and stimulates both student and public awareness of visual arts in Lethbridge and surrounding area by providing exhibition opportunities, information resources, curating and adjudicating opportunities and peer support. The Art Society has more than 300 members and displays student artwork in community venues like the Penny Coffee House, Sterling Mutuals, City Hall and Westside Starbucks. Art Degrees. The University of Lethbridge offers two routes for those wanting to pursue a degree in art — the BA route through the Faculty of Arts & Science and the BFA route through the Faculty of Fine Arts. Whatever degree you choose, you can rest assured that you will study with gifted experts across a wide range of artistic genres, including professional artists and scholars. There are numerous degrees you can complete with a major in art through the two faculties: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Arts & Science (BASc), Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Management (BA/BMgt), Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (BA/BEd), Bachelor of Fine Arts (Art), Bachelor of Fine Arts/Bachelor of Education (BFA/BEd), Post-Diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) (after a 2 or 3-Year Diploma) or a Post-Diploma Bachelor of Fine Arts/Bachelor of Education (BFA/BEd). Art Courses. Senior Art Studio. Required in the art studio major in the BFA (Art) and optional in the BA program, the advanced and senior studios allow you to do self-directed study under the supervision of an expert instructor. This includes the use of an individual studio space — a rarity for any undergraduate program. Minors. Adding a minor to your degree is a great way to explore academic interests beyond your major. A minor is a set of courses comprising a secondary focus of interest. It is generally not related to your major. A minor may be required or optional. Minors are not available in all programs. Our Faculty & Their Research Faculty members are happy to involve undergraduate students in their projects, using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment — giving you the opportunity to get additional hands-on experience. Art Collection. One of the most impressive collections in the country, the University of Lethbridge’s Art Collection’s strength lies in its diversity. The collection includes drawings, prints, paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations from Canada, America and Europe, spanning the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Visiting Artist Program. Through Art Now and Architecture & Design Now, you will have the opportunity to meet and learn from nationally and internationally renowned artists, architects, curators and designers on a weekly basis. Applied Studies

Applied Studies is a special opportunity offered to all uLethbridge students as a way to earn course credit for career-related paid, volunteer or community service work experience. Co-operative Education

The Faculty of Arts & Science is proud to offer you the chance to participate in our co-op program — the only one of its kind in Alberta to offer co-op to all majors in arts and science. Co-op allows you to gain work experience directly related to your studies and make invaluable contacts in the workforce, all while earning a competitive salary. Completion of the program allows you to receive a co-op designation on your degree and, most importantly, a kick-start to your career the minute you graduate. Research & Independent Studies

In addition to your regular courses, you have the opportunity to participate in Independent Studies. You’re able to contribute to departmental activities by volunteering on research projects or through employment as a research assistant. If your GPA is high enough, you can also enrol in undergraduate thesis-based courses where research is a component of your studies. There are field school opportunities available in some disciplines, as well as many opportunities to study abroad.
