Dear Friends and Supporters: Thank you for your generous contributions to the University of Lethbridge in 2018. Marmie’s unwavering commitment to public education, art, culture and community are the foundations of what the U of L is built on, and renaming the main gallery space the Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess Gallery brings these important concepts together.

This past year has been one of incredible momentum at the University of Lethbridge. In the spring, we announced the largest gift in the University’s history, a $10-million commitment from Mr. Bob Dhillon, and the transformation of the Faculty of Management to the Dhillon School of Business. Since then, the School has received AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditation, welcomed a new dean and launched a new donor-funded academic program, a major in Agricultural Enterprise Management. Only a few months later, we unveiled an unparalleled bequest of more than 1,000 works of art from the estate of Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess (DFA ’04). This was the largest gift of art and cultural properties in our history.

In the fall, we publicly launched SHINE: The Campaign for the University of Lethbridge. As the largest campaign in the University’s history, this is a campaign for all of southern Alberta. Our goals are twofold: to significantly increase engagement opportunities for alumni and community members, and to raise $100 million to propel the entire region forward. Still in the early days of the campaign, we already have 12,283 engaged alumni who are volunteering on campus, attending events or connecting with the University. Thanks to more than 9,000 donors who have generously made more than 32,000 gifts, we have already raised more than $68.4 million. One of our most significant collective achievements to date shines like a beacon on the north end of campus. Construction of the new Science

and Academic Building is nearing completion and we are preparing for faculty to move in and classes to begin in September. This is one of the most advanced facilities for teaching and researching the sciences in the country. It will pave the way for the future of innovation and discovery — and it’s right here in southern Alberta. As you’ll see throughout this report, your support is enabling us to ignite the minds of tomorrow’s leaders; shine new light on problems and possibilities through research and creative achievement; illuminate possibilities for students and community members; and build communities, making Lethbridge and southern Alberta a better, more prosperous place for everyone. Thank you for joining us as we take bold steps toward a brighter future together. Sincerely,

Mike Mahon, PhD President and Vice-Chancellor

Education changes the world When the Syrian refugee crisis erupted in 2015, a group of University of Lethbridge students were compelled to act in a way that was beyond simply posting to social media.

received overwhelming support. By adding a small $2 fee to tuition each semester, U of L students as a collective are bringing a refugee student to the University each year and changing lives for generations to come.

The students, Elise Pundyk, Grace Wirzba and Jamie Lewis, along with faculty member Dr. Anne Dymond, joined efforts with other students and formed a World University Service Canada (WUSC) committee at the U of L. In only four months, they elected an executive and their club grew to more than 70 members. Through bake sales, bottle drives and securing financial support from ScotiaBank and the U of L International Centre, they raised the $26,000 they would need to bring a refugee student to the U of L for one year.

“Although the student levy fund adequately supports a refugee student through their first year, the subsequent years of the student’s time at the U of L is not funded in a sustainable way,” explains Anne, the WUSC faculty advisor.

In fall 2016, Abdullah Mouslli, a Syrian living in Jordan, began his first year of studies at the U of L. “For me, it’s a life-changing chance,” he said at the time.

Al has made a significant gift to establish an endowment to help the WUSC student refugees beyond their first year of study at the University.

The WUSC Club spent the next academic year working to make their sponsorship of refugee students a permanent program at the U of L. They took the need to the student body through a referendum and

overcome huge obstacles to seek an education,” he says. “In many cases, they are learning a new culture, even a new language, in addition to their studies. Providing a small amount of financial assistance support while they build their life in Canada is important to their long-term success.” For the WUSC students, Al’s support is the next step in a long journey that is really just beginning. “I am excited about the continuation of this program because of the impact it has on so many lives,” says Elise, one of the U of L students who founded WUSC at the U of L. “It affects not only the refugee students who will benefit and be able to navigate their future differently through increased access to education, but also all the WUSC members who will be touched by the experience of sponsoring a student. The program brings together students of all backgrounds, from all areas of study, under a common purpose. It enables us to truly see how the work we do can make a difference.”

SCHOLARSHIPS LIGHT THE WAY Almost 600 University of Lethbridge students have contributed more than 7,700 volunteer hours since the UVolunteer program began in 2015. Recognizing students’ tremendous effort and commitment to volunteerism, Drs. Shelly and Stephen Wismath have established the School of Liberal Education Volunteer Scholarship. “There are students who put enormous time and effort into organizing things or working with different organizations,” says Shelly, a former mathematics professor and now dean of the School of Liberal Education. “They do that just because it’s the right thing to do for them. We think it’s important to have

a scholarship that rewards academic excellence and that kind of commitment to volunteerism.” In addition, the Wismaths have created a second award for computer science students, which they hope will especially benefit female students. “Women are underrepresented in computer science and we’d like to see the situation improve,” says Stephen, a computer scientist and U of L professor emeritus. The U of L has been the professional home for Shelly and Stephen for more than 30 years and they are well aware of the costs, challenges and ultimate benefits that come with student life.

“Education is what changes the world — it certainly changed my life,” says Shelly. “It opened up a whole new world for GIFTS TO STUDENT me. I had a student AWARDS SINCE 2012 loan and scholarships; I wouldn’t have gone to university otherwise.”

Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Cor Van Raay (LLD ‘15) and his $5-million gift to the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College in 2014, along with matching funding from the provincial government, the Dhillon School of Business launched a new major in Agricultural Enterprise Management in 2018. “The agri-food sector is forecasted to be one of the most dynamic, challenging and rewarding areas of business as the world’s population keeps increasing,” says David Hill, director of development with the Southern Alberta Agriculture & Agribusiness program. “This agribusiness program concentrates on how business, management, finance and their related disciplines can be actively applied to any agricultural enterprise.” The Agricultural Enterprise Management program was developed by Lethbridge College and the U of L through consultation with stakeholders in the farming community, industry and government to develop eight learning outcomes for the program. From there, four pillars were identified: accounting and finance, policy and regulations, marketing, and operations and management. The new major builds off the minor that launched in 2016. The new major will accept students beginning in the fall 2019 term.

The path to new knowledge is complex. Through partnerships and support from donors like you, our researchers and students are discovering new solutions to difficult problems, enabling positive change and impacting lives around the world.

“This collaborative work will hopefully seed the growth of other projects.”

Bill Spenceley (BASc ’81)

Plastics are part of our everyday lives, resulting in more than 300 million tons* being produced around the world each year. The prolific use of plastic also leads to prolific waste, with plastics polluting our oceans, killing our wildlife, accumulating in landfills and seeping into the water we drink. Moreover, the development of plastics relies heavily on fossil fuels. Thanks to a $1-millon investment from Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), the University of Lethbridge and Flexahopper Plastics, an international plastics processor headquartered in Lethbridge, are taking a leading role in combatting pollution.

U of L alumnus Dr. Farhad Faghihi (PhD ’15) (far left), who studied under chemistry and bio-chemistry professor Dr. Paul Hazendonk (second from left) at the U of L, approached Bill Spenceley (BASc ’81) (third from left) about conducting research and development work at Flexahopper Plastics. As a polymer engineer, Faghihi put the ideas together for the green polymer centre and is now Flexahopper’s director of R&D. Mohammad Kajkouly (far right), a current U of L student, provides R&D assistance.

Through the establishment of the Green Polymer and Technology Centre, the University and Flexahopper are working together to develop biodegradable plastics that don’t use fossil fuel feedstocks or require fossil fuels to process. While the research is just beginning, the collaborative approach is designed to meet industry need, helping business to cost-effectively go greener, and lead to economic growth in the region. “Thoughtful and strategic investments like this drive innovation, make Canada a world leader in research development and protect our environment,” says The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and the Minister

responsible for WD. “We are one step closer to our vision of a more sustainable, greener future to ensure Canadians have healthy, productive places to live, access to jobs, and expanded business growth opportunities.” The polymer lab, part of the U of L’s C-CRAFT (Canadian Centre for Research in Advanced Fluorine Technologies), will be located in the University’s new Science and Academic Building and will bring expanded opportunities for students to participate in research, not just in polymers, but in agriculture, fossil fuels, pharmaceuticals and environmental remediation. “I’m really excited for Lethbridge and the University because this collaborative work will hopefully seed the growth of other projects with industry and help attract more companies to the region,” says Flexahooper’s president and the U of L’s 2018 Alumnus of the Year Bill Spenceley (BASc ’81). * Plastic Oceans Foundation

George and Alice Hummel Neuroscience Award in honour of their parents. Currently, more than 100,000* Canadians are living with Parkinson’s disease, with more than 25 people in Canada being diagnosed each day. The stats may be alarming, but the future is hopeful. Siblings Eleanor (Hummel) Smith (BEd ’91), Bernie Hummel and Ruth Hummel Thomson (MA ’10) have established the

An endowed scholarship, a minimum $1,000 award will be given to at least one graduate student each year who is majoring in neuroscience and studying Parkinson’s or stroke. The endowment is particularly meaningful to the Hummel family as they lost their father, George, to Parkinson’s in 2010, seven years after being diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disease.

“Our goal is to play a small part in discovering a cure for Parkinson’s disease,” says Ruth. “And for every student who receives a scholarship, we want them to know: this is our vote of confidence in you and your work toward finding a cure for so many neurological diseases that touch so many families. Because of the work you do, there is hope something better is ahead.” * Parkinson’s Canada

INVESTING IN RESEARCH LEADS TO ALUMNI SUCCESS As the human population grows and industrial expansion continues, the demand for Alberta’s surface water progressively increases. This raises fundamental questions: how much water must be left in our rivers to ensure healthy environments; and how can we manage our limited water resources to provide economic prosperity without sacrificing healthy natural environments? With support from ConocoPhillips Canada, a University of Lethbridge research team led by Dr. Stewart Rood of the Water Institute for Sustainable Environments embarked on the ambitious Functional Flows project,

10

which sought to define optimal environmental flows for Alberta’s valued waterways. “In many cases, without the support of industry, crucial projects like these would not be undertaken,” says Sam Woodman (BSc ’15), who worked on Functional Flows as an undergraduate student and is now earning a PhD at the University of Cambridge. Sam’s fellow student researchers, Soba Kaluthota (MSc ’14), now an instructor in the School of Environmental Sciences

at Lethbridge College, and Evan Hillman (BSc ’12, MSc ’15), a water quality researcher for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, have also been inspired by their work with Dr. Rood, and are continuing to better our understanding of the environment. “Industry support strengthens research projects and greatly improves the impact of the work,” says Evan. “Industry support is the difference between a good research project and a great one.”

Thanks to your support, the University of Lethbridge elevates the social culture and recreational opportunities for all of southern Alberta and enables students, alumni and community members to build connections through participation, volunteerism and intellectual exploration.

When the late Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess (DFA ’04) gifted her outstanding art collection to the University of Lethbridge, it was a gift to all of southern Alberta to be enjoyed by individuals from around the world for generations to come. Hess, who passed away in 2016, only months after her 100th birthday, was a community leader, internationally recognized art historian and lecturer, businesswoman, rancher and philanthropist. Her unparalleled bequest to the U of L included more than 1,000 works of art, valued between $4 and $5 million, and is the largest gift of art and cultural properties in the University’s 52-year history. The diverse collection of iconic works includes Cliffs Near Petawawa by Tom Thomson, a contemporary of the Group of Seven; more than 400 works

The U of L Art Gallery proudly renamed the main gallery space the Dr. Margaret (Marmie) Perkins Hess Gallery and is focusing on researching the works, creating in-depth engagements for students, and providing public access to the collection through exhibitions and public programs. During the summer of 2018, the Hess Gallery experienced an approximate 65 per cent increase in attendance, including guests from across Canada and as far away as Australia. “It was important to Marmie that her collection be open and accessible to the broadest audiences possible and also be used to support education, teaching and research,” say Dale Boniface and Richard Haskayne, coexecutors of the Hess estate. “Recognized nationally for the quality of its art collection and the standard of care and stewardship it provides to the collection, we take great comfort in knowing that Marmie would be absolutely thrilled with the new home and plans for her collection.”

During his tenure as dean of the University of Lethbridge’s Faculty of Arts & Science, Professor Emeritus Dr. Bhagwan Dua always made students a top priority and, with his recent passing, the Faculty wanted to ensure his legacy lives on. This past fall, the Faculty of Arts & Science came together to celebrate the life of Dr. Dua while raising support for students at the inaugural Wine & Dine: Arts & Science Scholarship Dinner. Combined with the generous gift from the Dua family, countless others made contributions as a way to honour a friend, family member, community leader and colleague. At the end of the night, more than $80,000 was raised for the Dr. Bhagwan Dua Memorial Scholarship. “People come and go, but the University has honoured Bhagwan, and his legacy will live on and students will benefit from it,” says his wife Swarn Dua (BEd ’84), of the endowed scholarship that will be awarded yearly to one first-year student and one continuing student. “It really is full circle. Being an immigrant, Bhagwan himself was fortunate to have received financial aid and understood how much of an impact scholarships can make for students. I know he’d be smiling to see this.”

MAKING A BIG IMPACT ON SMALL BUSINESS Co-operative education provides students invaluable hands-on experiences, and businesses benefit from the students’ latest skills, fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. However, hiring a co-op student can sometimes be financially unfeasible for small businesses.

Co-operative Education program. Family and small business employers can apply to receive the financial boost they need to help hire a student who can help advance their business goals in summer, fall and/or spring semesters. In 2018, RBC funded eight small-business co-op positions.

As part of a larger gift, RBC provided funding to the University of Lethbridge’s Dhillon School of Business

“RBC’s financial support gives students the opportunity to utilize and expand their professional

skills, experience and confidence by participating in paid co-op work terms with family and small businesses in southern Alberta,” says Bruce Thurston (BA ’78), director of the RBC Family and Small Business program at the U of L. “These workintegrated learning opportunities in turn help prepare students for a smooth transition into the business world after graduation.”

Ten Thousand Coffees builds connections Thanks to a grant from RBC Future Launch, the University of Lethbridge was one of 10 schools to adopt the enterprise networking and mentoring platform Ten Thousand Coffees. RBC Future Launch partnered with Ten Thousand Coffees to give postsecondary students increased access to networking support through alumni connections. The goal of the program is to help students build a network while they are in school to gain a better understanding of what careers are available, develop their communication skills and explore new opportunities. Having these connections in place eases the transition from school to work. ULethbridge Connect works by matching students and recent

14

graduates with alumni. Students are introduced to a mentor based on their career interests and goals. Mentors share their experiences and advice by meeting in-person for coffee or through an online chat. Since the program started in September, 398 alumni and 231 students have registered and 522 introductions have been made.

STUDENT MENTEES

“This program benefits students by expanding their knowledge network and helps prepare them for their careers once they complete their education,” says Lyndsay Montina (BMgt ’09), manager, Alumni Relations. “For alumni, the benefits include helping shape the futures for students and young alums by sharing career advice and experience, developing mentoring and networking skills and building a network with other alumni based on interest and industry.”

Hockey heroes can be found on and off the ice, and whether you’re lacing up, working behind the scenes or cheering from the stands, teamwork is key for Canada’s game. As the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s hockey program prepares to host the Cavendish Farms U SPORTS University Cup Men’s Hockey National Championship on March 14-17, 2019, the community is coming together to show its support for the game and U of L athletes. In early 2018, alumnus Dan Laplante (BMgt ‘88) made the largest private donation to Pronghorns hockey in the University’s history, creating a series of financial awards for student-athletes. The bold donation is designed to bring top-level talent into the program and boost the Pronghorns to a championship level.

The community is coming together to support the Horns

Support also came from community and alumni through the establishment of the Seamus Daley Memorial Hockey Award, which pays tribute to a young man’s zest for life and the game he loved. Each year, Seamus’s friends and family host memorial golf and hockey tournaments, and thanks to their combined efforts, a scholarship will now be given to a Pronghorns men’s hockey player each year in Seamus’s memory. The local business community is also standing behind the Horns. Cox Financial Group is continuing the example set by their founder, the late Harry Cox, an erstwhile community supporter who helped

establish the Pronghorns men’s hockey program in 1983. Harry’s commitment to the program has now been carried on by his sons and grandson in the form of a life insurance policy directed toward Pronghorn hockey scholarships. In late 2018, Cavendish Farms announced its support behind the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns as the title sponsor of the 2019 U SPORTS University Cup Men’s Hockey National Championship. These gifts come at a significant time for the Pronghorns men’s hockey team as it looks to reclaim the magic from its historic run 25 years ago when the Horns claimed their only national championship behind head coach Mike Babcock. This is just the fourth time in the U of L’s 52-year history that it will host a U SPORTS national championship, and the first time the country’s best men’s hockey programs will battle in Lethbridge for the right to raise the David Johnston University Cup.

Buy a student breakfast December can be one of the most stressful times of the year for students. Final projects and exams are in full swing, and for many students, their student-loan money is beginning to run out. To brighten the dark winter days and get students’ days off to the right start, the Alumni Office launched the Buy a Student Breakfast campaign, and for $10, the university community could buy two students breakfast. With the help of alumni, faculty, staff and other U of L community members, more than 700 breakfasts were purchased for students.

U of L Swim Team gives back Although U of L Pronghorns Swim team members already maintain an extremely full schedule — training more than 23 hours a week between classes and homework — the team is built on a belief that excellence in sport extends past the winners’ podium and they continually work to develop a culture that fosters community service. Working together with Lethbridge Family Services, the team started a program to offer free swimming lessons to refugee families in need. Now in its second year, more than 30 children have received instruction from volunteer Pronghorn swim team instructors through eight-week sessions held at the U of L. “It’s pretty cool to see these kids learn to swim. Usually within two

lessons, they’ll start kicking and their eyes will go wide when they realize they can actually do this. Almost immediately, they’ll want to go to the deep end of the pool and jump off the diving board,” recounts Owen Guyn, a fifth-year neuroscience student and captain of the men’s team. “When we have our last session, many of the parents come down and personally thank us. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life.” The team has also helped facilitate the CIBC Run for the Cure for two consecutive years and hopes to make it an annual tradition. They’ve also been involved with several shoreline clean-ups through the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, picking up more than 754 items of garbage in one day alone.

Operation Red Nose – a holiday tradition Over the 2018 holiday season, 569 Operation Red Nose volunteers provided 1,103 safe rides home, more than 130 rides than the previous year, raising $26,872 in support of Pronghorn

Athletics. ORN volunteers ferried riders more than 22,200 kilometres, providing a valuable service to the community and creating safer roads for everyone.

IME makes an impact Two decades of IME students raise more than $200,000 for local organizations For the past 20 years, the Integrated Management Experience (IME) program in the Dhillon School of Business has been enabling students to apply business theories and concepts learned in the classroom to projects that have them solving real-life business problems for non-profit organizations in the community. Students in the IME cohort complete a four-course academic component, a community project and a business consultant element. These components allow students to apply theory and exercise

forward-leaning skills such as creative problem solving and critical thinking as well as foster relationships in the community. Each year, one local organization is chosen to receive business consultation as well as be the recipient of a sponsorship activity that raises funds and awareness for the organization. To date, IME students have raised more than $200,000. In 2018, IME was recognized for these contributions to the Lethbridge community and

awarded an Inspiring Philanthropy Award through the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Southern Alberta Chapter for the Youth Philanthropy category. IME Director Michael Madore says opportunities for student experiences like IME set the Dhillon School of Business apart from other schools. “The students make such an impact in the community,” he says. “To be able to help people and organizations that need assistance, I think that’s fantastic, and that’s why I’m in the program and the students are as well.”

Community spirit shines Canadian Blood Services honoured University of Lethbridge students, staff and faculty this fall as the winner of the annual Canadian University and College Blood Donor challenge. For the period September 2017 through March 2018, the University

led the country with 592 total donations as well as 92 new donors.

THE DIFFERENCE ONE SCHOLARSHIP CAN MAKE When Annette Kerpel (BHS/ BMgt ’18) crossed the stage at the U of L Fall 2018 Convocation, she was a bundle of emotions. One thing Annette didn’t have to worry about on convocation day was the burden of taking student debt along with her. She received a number of financial awards during her time at the U of L, including most recently the Larissa Featherstone Leadership Award. Knowing one of the scholarships she received was made possible thanks to a fellow U of L alumna is especially meaningful for Annette. She plans to pay it forward and create a scholarship for future students one day.

received allowed me to put more energy into my course work and less energy into trying to make ends meet.” To Larissa and the donors of the other scholarships she received during her time as an undergraduate student, Annette has an important message: “Thank you.” “I would like to say ‘thank you’ a million times over,” she says. “The financial support I received helped make my university experience a great one. I’m really excited to begin the next chapter of my life.”

“I think it’s really important to support other students the way I’ve been supported,” Annette says. “Scholarships do a lot more than help cover costs; they help students stay healthy. Worrying about money affects your mental health, your emotional health, even your physical health. Just being able to eat properly makes a big difference because your brain functions properly. For students, an extra $100 a month is like winning the lottery. The scholarships I

Earlier this fall, U of L students wrote more than 600 thank-you cards to donors, sharing the impact the scholarships have had on their educational journeys.

Here are just a few snippets of their heartfelt thanks. ... This award has been a financial blessing that is enabling me to obtain a post-secondary education...

... I would like to thank you for your generosity and your commitment to the world that is being created around us ... ... As you know, schooling is a long journey. From the scholarship you’ve created, I’ve received confirmation of hope I am headed in the right direction to impact individuals’ lives, as you have impacted mine.

… Receiving this scholarship has pushed me to achieve better grades and has helped me financially maintain a full course load which allows me to complete my degree on time…
