Oki, and welcome to the Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge. Our University is located in traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory, and our motto in the business school is “Mokakit” which is a Blackfoot term meaning ‘practice wisdom, apply your knowledge’. We seek to honour the Blackfoot people, and all Indigenous Peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our business school.

Whether you study in Lethbridge or Calgary, our priority at Dhillon is to equip students with the critical knowledge and skills needed to launch successful careers and lead productive lives, such as creative problemsolving, critical-thinking and social intelligence, among others.

There are many flexible study options available to you including evening and weekend classes for working students on our Calgary campus, and daytime classes on our Lethbridge campus.

Certificates

Management Certificates

Looking to pick up some business skills or try out business as a career? Complete 10-courses on a part-time basis. Majors include finance, Indigenous governance and business management, general management, human resources management and labour relations, international management or marketing.

Post-Bachelor Certificates in Accounting (CPA Bridging)

Already have a degree? Advance in your career with a Post-Bachelor Certificate in Accounting Fundamentals, a Post-Bachelor in Advanced Accounting or both with the PostBachelor Combined Certificates in Accounting. All certificates are approved pathways into the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program.

Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management

Jointly offered with the Faculty of Health Sciences. Available for students who wish to increase their expertise in health care or in management but not commit to a complete master’s degree. Ladders into Master of Health Services Management. After finishing your undergrad degree, you can pursue this graduate certificate.

Diplomas Finance

A 20-course program (approx. two years) not offered by any other post-secondary institution in southern Alberta. Soon to ladder into a Bachelor of Management.

Indigenous Governance and Business Management diploma

This 20-course program (approx. two years) gives students an Indigenous perspective

on business management, community development, entrepreneurship and more. It prepares learners for a variety of careers both off and on reserve.

Bachelor of Management (BMgt)

A 40-course program (approx. four years). Also available as a ‘five-year’ co-op degree (see page 19).

Bachelor of Management (BMgt) as a Second Degree

For students who already have a an undergraduate degree in a non-business discipline. Completed in 15-25 courses, depending on previous coursework.

Post-diploma Bachelor of Management (BMgt)

For students who already have a diploma from one of our partner colleges. Typically completed in two years with a previous business-related diploma or two and a half years with a previous non-business-related diploma.

Bow Valley College Integrated Pathway (BMgt)

Complete a ULethbridge Bachelor of Management (General Management) degree and BVC Business Administration Diploma (Supply Chain Management) in four years. Offered at the ULethbridge Calgary campus only, students will take classes simultaneously through both institutions while following a shared curriculum to complete both credentials.

After deciding on a degree, you’ll select your major (page 4) and may choose a minor. You also have an option to add an Honours Thesis.

Once you’ve completed your undergraduate studies, you can advance your career with:

Master of Science in Management

For students with an undergraduate degree in management, commerce or business. Previous work experience not required. Two pathways available: a thesis option (coursework and research thesis) in accounting, finance, human resources & labour relations, international management, marketing or policy & strategy; or a project option (coursework and applied experiential project) in business analytics.

Master of Health Services Management (MHSM)

Jointly offered with the Faculty of Health Sciences, the MHSM program provides interdisciplinary knowledge and experience for health care practitioners and entry-level managers in the health sector who wish to advance to senior positions.

Options for specialization

Once you’ve chosen your undergraduate degree, you’ll have 10 majors to choose from. These majors will allow you to build expertise in one area of chosen study to complement your foundation in business. If you have a broad set of interests you could take a double major or choose from one of our eight minors.

Entrepreneurial

Our benefactor, Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon, OC, exemplifies entrepreneurism. A firstgeneration Sikh immigrant to Canada, he launched his storied career in real estate while still a teenager, buying a pair of houses in Calgary, renovating them and selling them for a profit. Today, he is the founder, president and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corporation. Mainstreet currently owns and manages more than 17,000 rental units in cities across Western Canada and is valued at $3 billion. Mr. Dhillon’s fundamental belief is that education and entrepreneurship are the engines of national prosperity.

At the Dhillon School of Business, our courses will teach you the essentials to start or run businesses from small to large, plus there are specific paths you can take to grow and nurture that entrepreneurial spirit that already burns bright in you.

Family and Small Business Management minor

The entrepreneurial-focused courses in this minor give you hands-on experience to grow or start your own business. You’ll be taken outside your comfort zone but come out with solid skills, a serious business plan and real market data to back it up.

Test your entrepreneurial ideas in a safe environment

Have innovative ideas you want to put to the test? Agility is a campuswide program available to all uLethbridge students. The program supports student projects in areas including social innovation, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.

Recently Agility helped Dhillon student Peter HurdWatler create a secure virtual voting platform called Veras Technologies INC. The project won him $10,000 at 150Startups’ Innovation Rodeo student pitch competition and the opportunity to go to Draper University in Silicon Valley for a five-week entrepreneurial accelerator program.

From our early trailblazing predecessors to present-day visionaries, we know what it’s like to be ignited with an entrepreneurial spirit. It embodies creativity, risk-taking, perseverance and passion.

My most memorable experience at the University of Lethbridge was co-founding a business with my friend in the New Venture Start-Ups course. Together [my business partner] and I interviewed over three-hundred people to develop a business model and product that would resonate with consumers. We are still running that business and plan to continue growing the business after graduation.”

With a focus on business innovation, the Dhillon School of Business offers an educational experience unlike most others. You’ll be coached and mentored by industry professionals in unique programs and have the opportunity to test out what you’ve learned with the same modern technologies that are used by industry professionals.

Leading-edge courses

We know the future of business depends on innovative thought, so we offer leading-edge courses like Managing Innovation and Emerging Markets; Conversational Indigenization: Reconciling Reconciliation; Information Systems and Data Analytics; and Environmental Management.

Industry-related finance training

Our Centre for Market Research and Teaching, a financial “trading room” offers hands-on industry-related finance training. Both Lethbridge and Calgary campus locations boast direct connections to global financial markets and let you practice investing and managing risk with stocks, bonds and more.

With our Student Managed Investment Fund course, you also have the opportunity to manage an investment portfolio currently valued at approximately $200,000. It includes guidance from external investment professionals, internal faculty members and legal experts, giving you practical experience that will prepare you for a career in the investment industry.

Skill building in business analytics

The ability to harness data – foundational to most businesses and organizations – is one of today’s hottest skills and we want to help you gain those vaulable skills. Once you’ve completed your undergraduate degree, check out our Masters of Science in Management program which gives you the option of doing a business analytics concentration.

To thrive in today’s rapidly changing world, you need to understand emerging technologies. Our curriculum prepares you for the future and equips you with the latest thinking and innovative experiences.

Socially Responsible

Being socially responsible is about making a tangible difference in your community—wherever that is. As a student, you may find yourself raising money for charity through a student club or creating business strategies to help a non-profit in the community.

Integrated Management Experience and Applied Consulting Courses

Integrated Management Experience (IME) and Applied Consulting Courses are designed to provide students with hands-on work-integrated-learning opportunities in working with a community organization. The skills and knowledge students have gained in their prior courses, as well as coaching and support they receive form the course instructor, will provide a structure for students to integrate different areas of management practice to make informed decisions and address important real-world societal challenges.

Institute for Consumer and Social Well-being

We are home to the internationally known Institute for Consumer and Social Well-being (ICSW), an organization focused on the well-being of individual consumers as well as society in general. ICSW members are all marketing faculty within the Dhillon School of Business whose research and community workshops focus on addressing issues of corporate social responsibility, non-profit marketing, environmentalism, social-change marketing and more. Select students have the opportunity to work with ICSW conducting research.

Responsible management courses

Your courses at the Dhillon School of Business will push you to become more socially aware. You’ll gain new perspectives with courses like Managing Responsibly in a Global Environment; Social Marketing; and Managing Not-for-Profit Organizations.

The Dhillon School of Business believes in helping you become a responsible citizen and an ethical leader.

Dhillon students gather around the community-based mural they unveiled in downtown Lethbridge which raised funds for Streets Alive Mission through community sponsorship. The initiative was part of the Integrated Management Experience which gives students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to help solve a real-world business problem.

Students making a difference in research

Dhillon School of Business Alum, Ashley Ens (BMgt ‘16) graduated with an undergraduate degree in Management and went on to successfully defend her Master of Science in Management thesis called “Disrupting the academy: How we move from mere Indigenous inclusion to decolonization Indigenization.” Ens’ hope is that when her children attend post-secondary education, Indigenous ways of knowing are respected, valid and credible within the academy.

Throughout this research journey I have grown which impacts the decisions and action I make personally and professionally... Kathleen E. Absolon (2011) defines a “conscious Indigenous scholar” as an Indigenous searcher who is on the road to unpacking, uncovering and unlearning the impacts of a colonial history all while staying true to the path of reclaiming their Indigenous culture. I feel that this learning journey has helped me along that path of becoming a conscious Indigenous scholar.”

Indigenous student support

The Dhillon School of Business is situated on traditional Blackfoot territory and we believe in working closely with Indigenous organizations and doing our part to make reconciliation a reality. The Indigenous Governance and Business Management program offers students tutorial support in all academic areas to Indigenous students on campus, regardless of major.

Financial help

The average cost of tuition for a year (10 courses) for the 2023/24 year is $6428.00. Supporting students financially is important to us. That’s why there is hundreds of thousands

of dollars in financial help that Dhillon School of Business students are eligible to apply for. Award value ranges from $200 up to $5,000 for undergraduate students. Be sure to submit your awards application for consideration.

Student clubs

Connecting with business-minded peers just like yourself from the Dhillon School of Business is essential to feeling connected right from the start, and made easy with the many Dhillonexclusive clubs we host on campus. Clubs on our campuses include the Dhillon Business Students’ Association (DBSA), the Accounting Club, Finance Club and more.

DSB Edge

We know that connections with peers are crucial for success, which is why we created a cohort for students called DSB Edge. This program has a limited number of spots for Dhillon students. Your cohort will take your courses together and study together. You’ll also have preferential access to professional development opportunities and events.

The majority of our students participate in one of our many professionally linked programs because they better prepare you for the business world after graduation. Many workintegrated learning opportunities and interactive simulations are built right into the courses and other opportunities include; the Student Managed Investment Fund (p. 9), international opportunities (p. 13) and Integrated Management Experience (p. 10). The following ways are more options that will get you valuable real-world experience before you graduate.

DSB Work-Based Learning

The DSB Work-Based Learning office connects students with Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities in the community through funded and unfunded projects. Students receive mentorship and support to participate in various forms of experiences, including short-term projects, field visits, projects within the community, and with corporations. Through these experiences, and other experiential learning opportunities that is available to them, students will be able to enhance their employability and career success.

Student Professional Development

This externally funded program works with local organizations to deliver free industry networking and speaker events, interactive workshops, online training, an annual conference, case competitions and more. Annually selected program topics stem from current industry trends and in-demand skills identified by employers. These opportunities will help develop your work-ready skills beyond the classroom and expose you to current industry topics. You’ll have a record of your participation in these non-credit activities on your MyExperience transcript. Also, every DSB student gets a free LinkedIn Learning account.

Co-operative Education through Career Bridge

Co-operative Education (Co-op) is a work-integrated learning program that connects you with paid employment for four, eight, or 12-month full-time work terms through the University of Lethbridge’s Career Bridge office. The Dhilon School of Business proudly offers co-op placements to eligible students no matter their degree or major (something you won’t find elsewhere). Test drive a career or organization of interest, apply theories you’ve learned in the classroom while earning money, gaining confidence and developing your professional and personal skill-set. You’ll also have access to one-on-one career coaching, including resume and cover letter review, interview preparation and access to the career job board.

To become the best, you need to test yourself. Our instructors provide an experiential learning environment, allowing you to test theories and apply your knowledge with simulations, case competitions, and co-operative education.

CFA University Affiliation for our Finance majors

If you want to pursue a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation—recognized as the premier certification for investment professionals, you’ll be happy to know that the Bachelor of Management major in Finance is Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) recognized. That means our curriculum aligns with the CFA Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and emphasizes the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. It also means you’ll have 15 scholarships you can apply for to help cover the cost of CFA exams.

CPHR Accredited for our Human Resource Management and Labour Relations majors

The Bachelor of Management with a major in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations is accredited by the Chartered Professionals In Human Resources (CPHR). Student of this major can waive the CPHR National Knowledge Exam. You also only require three years of professional human resources experience to receive the full CPHR designation, whereas those who do not graduate with a degree from an accredited institution require eight years of experience.

CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) Entrance Requirements

The courses in our accounting degree major and our combined post-bachelor certificates in accounting cover all the prerequisite knowledge needed for entry into the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Professional Education Program (PEP). PEP is a two-year graduate-level program leading to Canada’s most pre-eminent business and accounting designation, the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).

Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business

As one of the first Canadian business schools to become a member of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB), we believe in the work of connecting Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal businesses to gain wisdom from and develop relationships with each other for a strong, reconciled and prosperous economy. As a student you’ll benefit from the connection to employers and diversity of thought that this network of industry experts bring to the work we do and programs we offer at the Dhillon School of Business.
