Information technology and information systems are key competitive weapons. In fact, the average organization devotes more than half its capital expenditures to information systems; and between now and 2012, one of every four new jobs created will be IS-related. IS professionals work closely with people at all levels of an organization. They combine their understanding of managerial issues and business processes with their technical knowledge to help others work better. As an IS professional, you can work in a vast range of industries anywhere in the world.

You’ll explore issues such as how to collaborate when the new-product development team lives on different continents; how to interface effectively and securely with suppliers and customers; how to ensure that decision makers have exactly the information they need; how to protect against hackers. You’ll study analysis, design and development of computer systems, networks and telecommunications. You’ll be the first to see new applications and revolutionary technologies. You’ll become an expert in gathering, organizing, analyzing, reporting and transmitting information. And throughout, you’ll learn to assess organizations’ information and communication needs. Course Sequence Because of the IS program’s tight structure and because not all courses are offered every semester, be sure to follow the prescribed sequence.
INVALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE THROUGH CO-OP PLACEMENTS Through the University of Lethbridge Co-op Program, you can be placed in work settings that directly apply your IS knowledge and introduce you to potential employers. There are 4, 8 and even 16-month work terms, and you can work in companies in Alberta, across Canada, even around the globe. You decide. Take the required database course (MGT 3830: Contemporary Database Design) and then choose three others from such courses as e-commerce, project management, systems analysis and visual programming.
