Theory into Practice (TIP) Programs
How can you link what you learn in the classroom to the complex, dynamic ‘real world’ of business? U of L’s Theory into Practice (TIP) programs are at the forefront of management education. You’ll apply classroom learning in real business situations that challenge you at every stage. What do students say about the programs? “Best experience ever!” INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE (IME) IME dissolves the boundaries between courses and disciplines. It integrates the different areas of business and applies management concepts to complex, real-world business problems in relevant, hands-on ways. By working with local companies facing difficult decisions, you’ll learn how business really works. You’ll learn about the stock market by tracking your own investments and competing to build the best-performing portfolio. You’ll sharpen your management skills and learn the real challenges involved in implementing business plans by working on a team project to benefit a local not-for-profit organization. APPLIED CONSULTING In U of L’s two Applied Consulting courses, you’ll first learn about consulting theory and actual practice and then test your skills by interviewing professional consultants, developing proposals for a real client and then working with that organization to implement the winning proposal. MENTORS In the Mentors program, you’ll be paired with a local business professional for a term (although many relationships last much longer). This professional will take you under his or her wing, help you explore what’s right for you and help you solidify your own career plans. Plus, you’ll build a network of contacts to draw on as your career progresses.
CASE COMPETITIONS Case Competitions require you to analyze a situation facing an actual company, recommend a plan of action and defend it in a presentation to seasoned business executives. You’ll pit your skills against teams of students from the best business schools across North America. Our students compete in several competitions each year, including Queen’s Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), Jeux du Commerce (JDC) West, the KPMG/Management Case Competition and the Grant Thornton LLP Case Competition. Judging by past successes, we expect our students will keep coming home with top honours.
“Through IME, I participated in case competitions, provided advice to the corporate leaders of a major Calgary company, and managed a project that raised money for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and the Lethbridge Symphony. In the Applied Consulting course, my team conducted a feasibility study for a well-known Lethbridge business. And then, for two years in a row, I was selected to compete in Queen’s Inter-Collegiate Business Competition. These programs made school more exciting because the work had much more of a purpose than just getting a grade. If you want to set yourself apart and become more marketable upon graduation, I highly recommend these programs.” Sabina Lokanc BMgt 2003, CA Chief Financial Officer, YMCA Calgary
