On behalf of our community, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the University of Lethbridge. When it comes to your post-secondary education, there are a lot of excellent options available and many important factors to think about. It’s a big decision, and we are thrilled that you are considering the U of L. The University of Lethbridge is one of Canada’s leading universities. We ranked as one of Canada’s top-three undergraduate institutions in Maclean’s 2013 University Rankings and were named Canada’s 2012 Research University of the Year (Undergraduate Category) by RE$EARCH Infosource. From the moment you step onto our campus, you’ll see we offer something unique. Spanning 500 acres, our campus is nestled in the southern Alberta coulees overlooking the Oldman River. The view is spectacular, and what takes place inside our world-class facilities is extraordinary. We provide our students with an immersive learning experience. Small classes are the norm, not the exception. Professors are world-renowned researchers; they are also your teachers. And because of our size, you’ll get to know them and interact with them on a daily basis. Our liberal education foundation enables you to explore a variety of subjects and discover what you’re passionate about while developing the critical thinking and analytical skills you’ll need when you graduate. We are also a place where incredible research happens – and you can be part of it. At the U of L, undergraduates take part in research activities normally reserved for graduate students at other institutions. Regardless of what you plan to do in your career, being involved in research will provide you with a tool kit of skills that will serve you well into your future. We are Alberta’s Destination University, and each year more than 8,300 students from around the world call our campuses in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton home. On behalf of the faculty and staff at the U of L, I invite you to visit our campuses and learn more about what we have to offer. I look forward to meeting you. Sincerely,

Michael Mahon, PhD President and Vice-Chancellor

The best place to discover what you’re passionate about is in the classroom – wherever that may be. At the U of L students study a variety of subjects. You’ll find history buffs mixing watercolours, drama majors studying marketing techniques and education students working in neuroscience labs. This is part of our liberal education philosophy and has been core to the U of L since our founding in 1967. Why? Because it enables our students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers who can adapt to change. What does that mean for you? By exploring a variety of subjects, you’ll discover what you’re passionate about and gain the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in a career you’ll love. And with an average class size of just 32 students (after first year), your classes will provide a personal learning environment where you get to know your professors and classmates.

Although most classes don’t take place outside, fine arts and Native American Studies professor Tanya Harnett is known for taking her students out of the traditional classroom to be inspired by their surroundings.

Our faculty members are world-renowned researchers. They’re also at the front of your classroom. What makes the U of L one of Canada’s leading research universities is our faculty. What makes the U of L unique is they involve you in their research. At the U of L, you’ll learn from some of the brightest minds in the world. You’ll have access to leading scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, economists, performers and health-care practitioners. Our faculty don’t teach from textbooks; they write them. You’ll also discover your professors’ commitment to students is as impressive as their CVs. Professors are accessible and approachable, and with an average student-tofaculty ratio of 12:1, you won’t get lost in the crowd.

BASE jumping is just one of the many topics U of L sociology professor Dr. Jason Laurendeau talks about when he’s sharing his cutting-edge research with his students. Although it’s an exciting sport, Dr. Laurendeau says watching his students develop their own thinking, arguments and ideas is his ultimate thrill. 8

Programs we offer What is a program? Your program is a broad area of study and is usually a set number of courses. You can choose a single bachelor’s degree with 40 courses, or opt for a combined degrees program that will give you two bachelor’s degrees with 50 courses.*

Bachelor of Arts

Bachelor of Education

Fine Arts

A Bachelor of Arts degree prepares you for a wide range of careers by providing a thorough liberal education. Examine topics from a variety of perspectives and gain an understanding of your major by viewing it through various disciplines; for example, how geography and religion shape history. You’ll also develop important skills such as reading critically, writing clearly, thinking creatively and speaking effectively.

Education changes lives and shapes futures. If you want to instill a passion for learning in the next generation, the University of Lethbridge has one of Canada’s leading teacher education programs.

(Bachelors of Fine Arts – Art, Drama, Multidisciplinary, New Media; and Bachelor of Music) Do you have something to say to the world and want to share it in a unique and creative way? We help you find your voice – whether it is in the dramatic arts, new media, music or visual arts.

By choosing a Bachelor of Arts program, you can take advantage of co-op education placements, internships, applied studies, independent study experiences and international exchanges – all opportunities to gain hands-on experience in industry, government and not-for-profit sectors. The U of L offers co-op work experience for every major in the Bachelor of Arts program at both the undergraduate and graduate level – we are the only university in Alberta to do this. This practical work experience will give you the competitive edge when seeking employment after graduation. Many programs only offer 13 weeks of practicum experience and students have to choose between teaching elementary and secondary school. At the U of L, you will receive 27 weeks of off-campus practicum experience, teaching in multiple settings. This means you will graduate with greater confidence in your teaching abilities and broader skills, which will give you greater flexibility throughout your career. Our Bachelor of Education program is also highly supportive. You’ll learn from professors who truly understand the classroom, and can balance education theory with practice – that’s because they have all taught in K-12 classrooms. Put your degree into practice – some career options to explore: elementary school teacher, secondary school teacher, trainer/facilitator, youth worker, school administrator, academic advisor, curriculum developer.

As a student in a U of L Fine Arts degree program, you’ll be part of a vibrant creative community on campus and off, learn in exceptional facilities, grow as an artist, and develop technical skills that enable you to flourish in a professional career in the creative arts. You can take advantage of co-op education, internships and international studies opportunities. Increase your knowledge, hone your analytical skills, expand your imagination and develop technical skills to meet the challenges of shaping the fine arts in a global community. What will you do after graduation? Entering the workforce can be challenging. At the U of L, our co-operative education, applied studies and international exchanges let you explore your interests while connecting with employers and putting future careers to the test. By alternating classroom learning with workplace experience, you can develop practical skills, gain valuable career contacts and maybe even make some money while you earn your degree. Enhance Your Degree Your education isn’t just about what you learn in the classroom; it’s also about the experiences you have outside of it. The U of L is committed to helping you explore your individual interests and expand your horizons through opportunities both on campus and abroad.

Research Opportunities

Independent Studies

As early as your first year, you can work alongside leading researchers as they push the boundaries of creativity and discovery. Regardless of your major, whether you plan to go on to graduate studies or begin a professional career, being involved in research as an undergraduate will help you stand out from the crowd when you graduate.

Available to all majors, independent studies allow students to explore their own interests within an area of study. There is a three-course sequencing guide, developed to help students first learn the necessary research and presentation techniques. Next, students will participate in hands-on learning in the lab while assisting their professors or completing their own research.

Co-operative Education/Internships

International Exchanges

Where would you like to work? Build your resumé before you graduate by participating in the co-operative education program.

Want a global perspective? You can participate in an international exchange at one of our 24 partner institutions, complete a practicum or professional semester abroad, or participate in one of several international study tours and field schools. These opportunities allow you to earn credit toward your degree, and provide an incredible learning experience that will contribute to your personal, intercultural, academic and career development.

By combining real-world work experience with academic studies, co-op helps you explore future employment possibilities through relevant, paid work placements. The program works to create a partnership between students, the University and the employer, offering students an extended learning environment and opportunities to network with employers.

Applied Studies By integrating principles learned in the classroom with practical situations, the Applied Studies Program offers you the opportunity to earn academic credit through employment or volunteer experiences related to your field of study.

We’re in Calgary and Edmonton, too. We know not all students come to university right from high school. We also understand that it can be difficult to put life on pause to further your education. Our Calgary and Edmonton campuses offer classes on evenings and weekends, allowing you to work full time while you earn the credentials you need to advance your career.

Flexibility matters Whether you’re interested in attending one of our campuses full time or want to take classes at all three, our flexible delivery options will help you reach your goals. And at the U of L, flexibility doesn’t mean online. Our face-to-face instruction will provide you with a rich and comprehensive educational experience.

Who you learn from makes a difference Boardroom by day. Classroom by night. Your professors are industry leaders, and they bring relevant, realworld experience into your classroom.

Who you study with matters, too Classes on the Calgary and Edmonton campuses are small – on average, 25 students per class – enabling you to interact with your professors and your classmates in a supportive, goal-oriented environment. Everyone learns differently and our instructors are committed to helping each of our students thrive. You will also experience the business world and can gain international experiences through our co-operative education program, international exchanges and work-study programs.

Further your education. Advance your career. At our Calgary or Edmonton campuses, you’ll gain a broad understanding of the issues facing organizations today. You’ll learn to be a leader. You’ll be equipped to advance your career and increase your earning potential. And you’ll be well prepared for a successful future in domestic and international businesses, government or not-for-profit organizations. When you graduate, not only will you have the confidence to succeed in whatever you do, you will also have a degree that can take you anywhere – whether that means pursuing further education or establishing a professional career.

“The U of L offers outstanding flexibility in its management programming. I was able to attend the Lethbridge campus and then wrap up my final year at the Calgary Campus, gaining professional experience while I worked full time and attended classes at night.”

“The small class sizes and combination of full-time and part-time students, coupled with the opportunity to gain work experience through interesting co-op placements, made the U of L Edmonton campus a very relevant and dynamic learning environment.”

Student Life Wondering what it’s like to be a student at the U of L? Here’s a glimpse. To see more of the U of L through the eyes of our students, search #uleth on Instagram. As a student at the U of L, you will make new friends, have life-changing experiences and leave with an education that can take you anywhere. The best years of your life start at the U of L. There are numerous ways to get involved on campus.

Commencement and Orientation

Students’ Union

Commencement, a ceremony to welcome you to the U of L family, is held each fall before the start of classes. You’ll learn about our history and how you can carry on our traditions. Orientation is important to start you off on the right foot. We celebrate your arrival, show you our facilities and ease your transition to life on a university campus.

The University of Lethbridge Students’ Union (ULSU) is an organization run for students by students. They support our campus clubs, provide funding for conferences, advocate on your behalf and manage our student food bank. ULSU is also responsible for events like FreshFest – the largest outdoor music festival in Lethbridge – cabarets and special theme nights at the Zoo.

Convocation Convocation is the culmination of your hard work at the U of L. It’s the formal ceremony where students don a cap and gown and receive their degrees, diplomas or certificates. Convocation ceremonies are held in the spring and fall.

Leadership Opportunities If you want to develop leadership skills, meet new people and expand your résumé, consider student government. We have approximately 50 committees made up of dedicated student volunteers – it’s a great way to understand university operations and make connections. Become a student mentor and help new students with their transition to university. Campus leadership roles may qualify you for more scholarships and also shows potential employers you are committed and engaged.

Join the Club

The Zoo The Zoo is our campus pub where you can kick back with friends, grab a bite with your professor, catch a game on the big screen or relax on the patio and watch the sun go down over the picturesque coulees – weather permitting, of course.

CKXU Have what it takes to be an on-air personality? CKXU is our campus-community radio station where more than 100 volunteers assist in on-air programming, advertising, fundraising and production of each show.

The Meliorist Want to gain some experience in journalism? Join the Meliorist. Student staff members gain first-hand knowledge in writing, editing, photography, layout and management of a weekly newspaper.

With over 80 official campus clubs, the U of L is the centre of social and athletic activities, travel, volunteer opportunities, artistic events and everything in-between. Whether it’s surfing, metal music, community gardening or literature, the U of L has something for everyone. Don’t see a club you want to join? Start your own.

Visit campus to see if the U of L is right for you. We’ll give you a personal tour and arrange for you to go to class with a current student. That way, you can get the real story about what it’s like to be a student at the U of L. Call 403-329-2762 or inquiries@uleth.ca

The University of Lethbridge offers a wide range of on-campus living options, from single rooms to shared apartments. First-year students entering straight from high school can apply online to stay in the University Hall (UHall) traditional-style dorms or in one-, two-, four- or six-bedroom apartments in Kainai House.
