Since the Ulster Tatler was ﬁrst published, some 55 years ago, our aim has been to reﬂect the positive side of life in Northern Ireland. Over recent months, however, for many of us, positives have been pretty thin on the ground. I am therefore pleased – and more than a little relieved – that spring is in bloom and we have lots of evidence of things being “on the up”. Firstly, we have coverage of the Northern Ireland women’s football team’s stunning victory against Ukraine at Seaview in

north Belfast in mid-April. This resulted in their qualiﬁcation for the 2022 Euros – a feat they have never achieved before. Turn to page 73 to get the thoughts of team captain Marissa Callaghan and the manager, Kenny Shiels, as well as lots of coverage from the night. Still on the sporting theme, our photographer has visited several golf and tennis clubs to witness their re-emergence. Hopefully over the coming months we will have more of the same. Lastly, on pages 17 of this issue, we pay tribute to the long life of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. We look back at his numerous visits to Northern Ireland over the decades and get the thoughts of some of the people with whom he left a lasting impression.

MORE POWER TO HER ELBOW This month, Kathy Clugston discusses finding the joy in life during the mundanity of lockdown. “I’ve nothing much to report...” How often did we hear those words as we phoned or video-called our friends and relatives? Those of us lucky enough to have escaped illness, bereavement and unemployment now ﬁnd ourselves aggravated by no one having any news to share that does not pertain to those three dreadful life events. No excruciating date stories, no nights at the theatre to recommend, no scandalous goings-on at the oﬃce party. The internet has been the saviour of so many of us who are parted from loved ones, but online socialising just isn’t the same. Group chats can make you feel oddly self-conscious and always go on far too long. It’s the casual, everyday contact we miss: speculating about the weather at the bus stop, exchanging ideas with a colleague in the canteen, swapping stories with an acquaintance at choir/ bingo/class, sympathising with someone in a waiting room - all these seemingly unremarkable interactions that root us in our neighbourhood and make us feel part of society at large. There is mounting evidence that the loss of these so-called ‘weak ties’ is doing us absolutely no good at all. Anyway, I did actually have some news to share this week. I got what is possibly one of the best text messages I’ve ever received. It said “Are you able to talk to Adrian Dunbar this morning?” I can’t think of any circumstance, barring unconsciousness, in which the answer would be no. There was a brief panic when I realised I was still in my pyjamas with vertical hair. Nothing an aggressive brush, a dab of lipstick and a cardigan couldn’t sort. For Adrian, I might even throw in a quick swipe of the oxters.

“Yrs,” I typed frantically “Yrs pleaae!” hoping my Radio Ulster producer would get the gist. And a short time later, my Zoom screen pinged and there he was: crisp of shirt, twinkly of eye and luxuriant of hair. He was there to talk about the life of his hero and mentor, the late actor James Ellis, and shared some fond memories of him. I tentatively nudged him into Line of Duty territory how could I not? - and he graciously let me, skilfully deflecting anything that might betray the merest hint of plot. It must be so stressful keeping it all a secret. He spoke about the parallels between Ted Hastings and Bert Lynch, the character played by Ellis in the long-running police series Z-Cars, and happily admitted to “cribbing” from Ellis’ performance. A picture of the pair of us - him languid, me grinning like a loon went straight onto social media and into the inboxes of every person I know. You’ve got to spread the joy, haven’t you? Talking of joy, I have found a new love: the pressure washer. How did I not know about the great happiness this item can bring? When I was growing up, it was the men who always elbowed their way to the power tools. We might get hold of a screwdriver or a hammer but the drill, the hedge trimmer, the chainsaw? No chance. It has nothing to do with preserving our safety, or our delicate little hands not being big enough, it’s because these tools are THE BEST FUN EVER. Since I dug the pressure washer out from under the old hoses and bits of tarpaulin in my Mum’s garage, I’ve barely stopped. The area at the back of my house is mainly flagstones: you could eat your dinner off it now. There is nothing quite as satisfying as

seeing little patterns of brightness emerge through decades-old dirt as you work your way methodically over each slab, schooshing algae and weeds into oblivion. Then you can set about the plant pots, the window sills, the car… By the end of it, you have dirty eyeballs and are soaked from hair root to toe tip, but what a sense of achievement! I have my eye on the masonry drill and the electric sander next. I’ve got the power now and there’s no stopping me.

A passionate champion of science, engineering and technology, he also spoke several languages and had a deep interest in philosophy and matters spiritual. Invariably quick witted and well informed, he never failed to light up a room with his considerable charisma. His connectivity with young people was outstanding and his Gold Award ceremonies at Hillsborough Castle for The Duke of Edinburgh Award are indeed the stuff of legend. The volume and diversity of people who have contacted my office and the Belfast Lieutenancy website to pay their condolences has been striking. It is clear that His Royal Highness not only impacted many lives, but also is held in enormous affection and admiration by the people of this city. He was a Prince in all respects, and we will not see his likes again.”

“I met HRH Prince Philip on several occasions when I was involved with the Outward Bound Trust, this included Garden Parties at Hillsborough Castle as pictured. We wore black spotted ties and the Duke always knew who we were just by looking at our ties. I found the Prince to be a very nice man, he always did the talking and was very sharp – you had to make sure you knew your facts as he certainly did, he was always very well informed.”

Lady Elizabeth Bloomfield MBE “Prince Philip was charming and is definitely good looking. He was quite funny, as when I met him he was laughing at my hat. He said it is going to fall off! I was hoping it would fall off, as he would have to pick it up! The Prince gave a great impression, as the crowds loved him.”

“It is well documented that HRH The Prince Philip was not just a figurehead of many charities, he was hands on and really interested in the work they did too. So it was through a couple of charities I work with that I was fortunate enough to meet him on a number of occasions in Belfast, Hillsborough Castle, The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh and Buckingham Palace. I was invited to Hillsborough Castle for lunch with HM The Queen and HRH on one of their visits. I naturally assumed it would be me and a couple of hundred other people spread throughout the house and grounds so I was really surprised to discover there were only 20 of us sitting down for lunch in the dining room, with drinks beforehand in the drawing room. The Royal couple mingled with the guests and put us all at ease, asking pertinent questions and having a laugh too. I’m a board member of the Belfast Activity Centre, which was set up over 30 years ago, providing development for young people originally through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and he would visit the Centre to see how the work was going. He would regularly attend the DofE Gold Awards Presentations, and on a number of occasions I was asked to assist His Royal Highness at the ceremony. He was always really relaxed in the company of the young people and really interested in what they had done for their awards. When he left the room you could be guaranteed he would leave everyone laughing with his great sense of humour.

Alderman Jim Rodgers OBE Former Lord Mayor of Belfast “I had the pleasure of meeting His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh on a number of occasions, during the two periods when I was Lord Mayor of Belfast; also as Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Belfast, and as High Sheriff of the capital city of Northern Ireland. He came across as a very well informed person and one who knew exactly what was going on in Belfast. The Lord Mayor’s chain of office really impressed him and he told me it was one of the nicest he had ever seen. He also said that Belfast was a beautiful city and hoped we would soon put the Troubles behind us. I told him that both he and Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth were always welcome in our great city.”

I didn’t envy anyone who was organising one of his events as if something caught his eye he could deviate from the planned route and timetable and quite often you would hear one of his team issue the warning “The Duke has gone rogue”. I found him charming, interesting, sharp and funny. He made a lasting impression on anyone who met him and will be greatly missed.”

It was with delight that the members of the Belfast Boat Club returned to their chosen sport on a ﬁne Saturday spring morning. Elected Members observed a moment’s silence at the beginning of the meeting, which took place on Tuesday evening, 13 April 2021. Prior to the meeting, Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, was joined by Her Majesty’s LordLieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell KStJ, as he signed Council’s online book of condolence to mark the passing of Prince Philip. The Mayor told the meeting: “On behalf of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and the citizens of the Borough, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. “Many tributes have been paid, condolences tendered, and stories recounted about this remarkable man, who was just weeks away from his 100th birthday. “I have sent a message extending our condolences on behalf of Council and the people of Mid and East Antrim to Her Majesty The Queen, assuring her and the Royal Family of our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.”

Mayor Johnston said the Duke of Edinburgh had a “tremendous sense of duty to the nation and to Her Majesty”. “It is very clear that the loss of His Royal Highness is deeply felt across our Borough, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and beyond,” Councillor Johnston added. In carrying out his duties as The Queen’s Consort, the Prince visited Mid and East Antrim twice – first in 1953 when the Royal couple stopped at Ballymena train station as part of their Coronation tour; and then again in 1961, when Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip disembarked at Carrickfergus harbour, taking time to meet with local people and tour the historic castle. Mid and East Antrim’s tributes to Prince Philip echo sentiments shared by many across the world who have thanked him for his service. His legacy will continue through the charities he supported, and through the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme that has made an impact on so many young people’s lives.

I think at this current time in our lives with everything going on it can be a struggle, it could be financial problems, relationship probems or just really not feeling in a good headspace. Everyone is different and everyone has their own struggles. I think most importantly if you have good health you are already winning, as they say your health is your wealth. For me I find if I’m not in the best headspace I try and put my phone away, get some fresh air or talk to a friend or family member. We are in it together and there is light at the end of the tunnel. 7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? I love Northern Ireland because I grew up here, I went to school here – it is a place with a lot of history and some amazing places to visit. The people are very friendly and I’m proud to call myself Northern Irish!

8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? The Time is Short… it is written on a church tower in Ballygowan, my dad showed it to my brother and I when we were little, I think about it sometimes and how life is precious and can go by fast so we must enjoy and savour it.

1. What do you love most about your job? The best part about my job is running out at the Kingspan stadium in front of a big crowd! This is something I really miss with fans not being allowed back in the stadium due to COVID. Ulster fans are special and the buzz they give me when I’m on the pitch is euphoric.

4. What is your daily routine? Each day can be diﬀerent, Monday and Tuesday are very busy days at training with Ulster where we get a lot of our work done. Wednesday is usually a down day or a recovery day, where you can relax a bit more, let the body rest and maybe take care of some things outside of rugby… or as Andrew Trimble always called them, admin days!

3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I enjoy listening to podcasts and taking my dogs for a walk, or watching a movie with my girlfriend, that’s about the height of what

KNITWEAR, BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT Hope Macaulay, the 24-year-old fashion wunderkind from Coleraine, tells Jane Hardy what makes A-listers ask for her unique knitwear. 30

ber-glamorous supermodel Gigi Hadid, known for her work as muse for labels such as Dior and Calvin Klein, was spotted recently in a supermarket wearing a Hope Macaulay knit. This fashion event inevitably ended up in the press. Macaulay, the 24-yearold Coleraine designer, creator of rainbow-coloured bespoke knitted Merino wool jackets like the Wonderland Chunky Knit in question, explains how it came about: “Gigi Hadid’s stylist reached out to me via email, though I think they found me on Instagram, saying, ‘Could you loan or gift me an outfit?’ “ Success breeds success and Hope adds: “I ended up giving Gigi Hadid one of my pieces, the one that ended up in the supermarket. Then her sister Bella got in touch via a friend, asking for something for her personal wardrobe. I thought, ‘That’s crazy and so exciting!’’ Clearly knitwear has moved on from the serviceable navy M&S cardi. Now it can be edgy, high fashion, arty and inevitably big business. A typical Hope Macaulay hand made, say the Paradise Colossal Knit Jacket (£380) is a wrap-around number that, like most of its fellow knitted creations, re-defines chunky. There’s a pleasing, surprising contrast between the form, with the raised yarn forming a pattern, and the colours. Macaulay’s palette is pastel with magical pale blues, soft yellow, white and often pink. “Yes, I nearly always put in a bit of baby pink, as it’s my favourite colour.” One of the designer’s couture heroes is the late Alexander McQueen, known as the “hooligan of the English catwalk” and famed for super outré pieces like the Bird’s Nest Headdress made by collaborator Philip Treacy. Hope recalls her mother Lesley, now a lynchpin of the Macaulay knitting team round Northern Ireland, dragging her to a McQueen exhibition when they were in New York in 2010. “I said, ‘Why do we have to go? I don’t want to wait in this big queue.’ But then we went inside, and I saw all his works and I understood.” Although Hope Macaulay has only been trading since 2018, already her work has been in Vogue and other key magazines. After London Fashion Week 2019, one of her outfits ended up in the fashion bible’s style slot. “Harper SiLin wore one of my big knitted jumpers and one of my printed dresses. The blogger was caught by a photographer shooting for Vogue and ended up being their Best Street Style.” She says that during The Australian Open, tennis star Naomi Osaka wore some of her knitwear for a GQ fashion shoot. Not only did the Hope Macaulay outfit make it into the magazine, chosen from the armfuls of designer wear that are supplied to such events, it reached the coveted number one spot, rather like its wearer. In other words, it made the cover. “She wore one of my Paradise Colossal knits from my Knits of Paradise line, which has lots of greens. I didn’t get my hopes up but when they told me it had made the feature and the cover, that was incredible.” This fashion story started when Hope Macaulay graduated from the Creative Arts College at Rochester in Kent. Although Hope says her love of knitting began when her granny taught her to knit-one purl-one. “My granny taught me to knit little scarves at the age of six.” Her enthusiasm for wool’s potential stepped up a gear at college. “When I went to university, I experimented with different techniques. I watched videos on YouTube and in my final year, created a graduate collection which included a giant knitted multi-coloured coat.” And Hope’s coat of many colours launched her brilliant career. “One of my tutors told me I should do more work like that.” But initially, the work

was primitive compared to the fine items that will be on show postpandemic in Hope Macaulay’s new Coleraine studio. She says modestly: “Looking back now, it wasn’t that well made.” The current Hope Macaulay range, which includes quirky patterned dressed and jackets, accessories like square rhinestone glass frames (“That’s my Dolly Parton moment!”), is finished to an extremely high standard. And the knitted designs, which range from cardigans and wrap-arounds to cheeky crop tops, is produced by 15 home knitters using a special technique. As Hope explains: “It involves hand-knitting, using no needles, and I had to teach everyone during the pandemic via videos and email.” As she says, the knitwear brand is in a couture category all of its own. “I love the chunkiness, it’s 100% Merino wool, apart from the vegan range, and I love colour. My mother always wore bright colours and dressed us in them. But there was one outfit, with a leaf pattern, that made me look like a little tree and I said ‘I’m not wearing that, Mum’.” On her Spring Summer 2021 range, ie now, which contains green as an on-trend shade (but no leaves), she says: “They’re luxury, handmade items.” They add a distinctive style to people round the world, including at least one South Korean girl band. If you want a less expensive Hope Macaulay outfit, the vegan items come in nylon and a biodegradable yarn at off-the-peg prices. The clothes have an art history edge, too. Alice in Wonderland 31

“There was a big move towards craft and lots of people started knitting, so I was swept along with that.” The star designer gains help with long days (“I work late on Instagram”) from photographer older sister Beth who assists with shoots. They come from a creative family as father Tony Macaulay is the author of Paperboy. Hope’s boyfriend Josh is also involved. “We’ve known each other since we were teenagers and kept together when I was away. He works for me now, transporting stuﬀ for me, keeping the studio in good shape.” Hope’s got an American online project in the pipeline and her ambition is to get into shops when they reopen. “Saks Fifth Avenue and Selfridges or Harrods in London, that would be amazing.” You read it here ﬁrst.

She wore one of my mini-dresses with a print jacket with lots of embellishments to an awards ceremony in Paris and one of the long catwalk dresses to an awards show in Belfast.” The Hope Macaulay brand has no Brexit problems as it beneﬁts from the unique Northern Irish economic situation and still enjoys some EU trade rules. Lockdown has also brought beneﬁts, as Hope explains:

How would you describe your style? It changes a lot, sometimes I love neutral tones as they are so versatile, but then I can get fed up and just love a pop of colour. I am probably most known for my love of a pop of colour in a shoe or a bag and of course, jewellery. I love how they can completely switch up a look and I can make it my own. I am not afraid to try to different trends of styles to see which suits me and there are ALWAYS deliveries arriving to my door! My new Anine Bing Alice bag, it was a wedding present from my husband that I had on my “wishlist” for years. It goes with everything and is the perfect size. Do you have a favourite designer or high street brand? I am definitely a Zara addict, I love their on-trend pieces and I find it really easy to put outfits together when I buy from Zara. I also adore & Other Stories, especially their midi dresses as you can dress them up with heels or wear them casually with trainers and recently, I have started to shop on Arket too, another fab brand. Do you have any style icons? There are quite a few influencers on Instagram that I always check in on, such as Twinset / Smyth Sisters. I have always been into fashion so I do like styling my own outfits myself. Do you have a skincare regime? Yes, I am very into my skincare, I love the brand Pestle & Mortar and am using quite a lot of Environ at the moment. Are there any haircare products you recommend? I have just started using Philip Kinglsey products and they are amazing. I am also obsessed with any hair serums that I can put in once I have styled my hair as it gives they give a gorgeous shine and smooth down all the stray hairs. What is your go-to makeup product? I love Hourglass concealer, it is amazing for hiding any blemishes and then I always add a glow with Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter. My favourite foundation is Nars Sheer Glow and recently I have bought a few of the UP Cosmetics products and I really like them, they are so easy to use. How do you keep fit and healthy, are there any exercises or health foods your swear by? I exercise daily as we have a very active dog, it used to be the gym, but I am due my first baby in August so it just walking and prenatal pilates at the moment, which I am really enjoying. I try to eat healthy during the week but I do enjoy a splurge at the weekends.

Although if money were no object, “A Child Of The Jago” on Charing Cross Road is incredible: truly alternative quirkiness. A quick smear of Dax Wax on our taches, and we’re ready to hit the town! How do you keep ﬁt and healthy, are there any exercises or health foods your swear by? Mark: Our lockdown purchase was our beloved tandem. However, the lovely “Tina” has retired, and has been put out to pasture, (we probably wore her out), but we have recently acquired “Turner”a beautiful, bespoke, beast of a

machine who is helping us reach our new target of 10,000km! Brian: I used to attend around ten gym classes a week until lock down put an end to all that. However, since we bought the tandem, there’s hardly a day goes by without us going out and about, entertaining folk with our cycling antics in and around Belfast. Sun Awareness is the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) annual campaign to raise awareness of skin cancer. The campaign runs from April to September annually and includes Sun Awareness Week (3rd-9th May). The campaign is two-pronged and combines prevention and detection advice. The first aim is to encourage people to regularly self-examine 44 Ulster Tatler

for skin cancer. The second is to teach people about the dangers of sunburn and excessive tanning, and to discourage people from using sunbeds, in light of the associated risks of skin cancer, in addition to public education about the dangers of sunbed use. It’s quite easy to be safe when playing outside, with the simplest and most

important thing to do being putting on sun screen. Make sure you put on a hat, or cover your skin. It’s the easy things like this that save your skin from harmful and painful damage caused by the sun when over-exposed. Over-exposure to the sun’s rays can cause serious damage to your body, with two common types of cancers: Nonmelanoma and melanoma, which is by far the most dangerous and deadly skin cancer. So look after your skin, stay in the shade and be safe in the sun. Everyone is affected by damage to the skin from the sun, in fact last year, 35% of people in the UK were burnt at least once, with 28% of those being burnt more than three times during the year. So this year, remember to wear sunscreen, wear a t-shirt, stay in the shade and during Sun Awareness Week spread the word of sun safety and the dangers of over exposure. THE BELFAST KNEE CLINIC What is the Belfast Knee Clinic? The Knee Clinic is a branch of the Ulster Independent Clinic situated at Ulsterville Avenue close to the Belfast City Hospital. What conditions do you treat? Many people with knee symptoms participate in sport or exercise. Their activity can lead to injury or overuse. Later in life degenerative conditions can lead to arthritis which limits daily activity or sleeping at night. We see people of all ages but they usually have a common goal – they want to get back to improved activity.

What is your advice for someone suffering from knee symptoms? Many patients with knee symptoms are assessed and successfully treated by physiotherapists, GPs, and A/E departments. Most of our referrals come from these professionals for patients who have not improved or who have more serious conditions. We are also happy to have direct referrals from patients themselves. Patients with non-urgent conditions are usually seen within a week or sooner on request. Urgent cases can often be seen the same day or next day since there is always a Consultant available to make emergency arrangements. X-rays and scans can also be arranged on the same day if necessary and urgent slots are available for surgery. With more minor conditions, some of our happiest patients have had simple reassurance and advice.

What procedures do you offer? Most people with knee symptoms do not require surgery. Initial assessment would be at a 30 minute appointment followed by appropriate investigations such as x-rays or scans. We would then recommend management which may include modification of activity, physiotherapy or injections. At subsequent follow-up we assess outcome and arrange additional treatment if necessary. For more serious conditions we use arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), ligament reconstruction, bony realignment and joint replacement. The surgical procedures are at the Ulster Independent Clinic.

Is tinnitus causing you frustration? Tinnitus can be heard as a ringing, hissing, whistling, buzzing or clicking sound that can be intermittent, or constant. COSMETIC SKIN TAG AND MOLE REMOVAL Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr. Chris Hoo specialises in the removal of cosmetic moles and skin tags. In the vast majority of cases all of these lesions are benign. But if there is any clinical concern about the nature of the lesion it can be sent off for testing. Q & A with Chris Hoo Q: How are skin lesions removed? “In most cases these can be done under a local anaesthetic. If there are no concerns about its nature they can be either shaved off, or excised. Some skin lesions can also be treated by freezing the skin – termed cryotherapy. All options are discussed with the patient beforehand.”

Q: Does it hurt having these removed? “Since these are treated under local anaesthetic it shouldn’t! The worse bit is having the injection of anaethetic, which many patients describe as a mild stinging sensation. Cryotherapy does not even need an anesthetic.” Q: How long does the procedure take? “This depends on what’s being done, but most procedures take between 15 and 30 minutes or so.” Q: Can I drive home afterwards? “That depends on you! If you are the sort of person who can drive home after a filling at the dentist then there should be no reason why not. But if you are a bit squeamish, best to bring someone with you. They can at least tell you how brave you were, even if they don’t need to drive!” Q: What about aftercare? “If stitches have been necessary these are generally removed after 5 – 7 days. For best results a combination of steristrips and scar massage are required and which you need to do will be discussed.” Q: Will I have a scar? “Scarring is an inevitable consequence of surgery in anyone’s hands, so yes. But of course the whole point is to be cosmetic and so everything is designed to minimise this. It’s best to consider this as replacing one cosmetic blemish with another one, which should be much better. MAKEUP FOR EVERY OCCASION Rebecca Duff has been working in the makeup and beauty industry for ﬁve years, previously working with award-winning makeup artist, Paddy McGurgan. Her work is mainly focused on beauty and wedding makeup, but has also been involved in a range of editorial photoshoots, and she also provides lessons for those wanting to learn on themselves or clients. Rebecca says of her work; “My aim is to create bespoke makeup for each individual, with a real emphasis on making each client the best version of themselves. JERVIS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY - NEW NAME, NEW LOGO, SAME HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM When they originally started Paul Jervis Photography just over 12 years ago, little did Paul and Judith realise that they would end up working together, as a husband and wife team photographing weddings. Initially, Judith went to the weddings to support Paul, but it was not long before she was picking up the camera and capturing the memories of their wedding clients. Paul said, “We rebranded to Jervis Wedding Photography last year to reflect we are a husband and wife team, with a logo styling that reflects our personal touch and the quality of our service and products.” Their name may have changed, but the dedication to capturing natural, lasting memories to be treasured for years to come is still at the heart of what they do. I would deﬁnitely encourage business owners to try to adapt their marketing strategy and remain positive. 1. What do you love most about your job? I love everything about my job. There’s a saying ‘If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life’ and I live by that mantra. I love every aspect of my job. We offer a wide range of treatments from waxing to reflexology, but my favourite treatment is the Dermafrac Advanced Facial Therapy, which I introduced to my salon just before the first lockdown. This treatment consists of a combination of microdermabrasion, micro needling and serum infusion and the results are outstanding. I can’t wait to get back to work, we’ve had to reschedule so many clients to adhere to government guidelines and I do miss the craic and banter. I’ve built up such a great rapport with my clients over the past 20 years of being a beauty therapist. Not only do I have a skilled team working with me, but they are so loyal to me and my clients. 2. What has been your career highlight to date? Obviously opening my own salon in 2016 and within three years we built up a five star reputation and we were awarded ‘highly commended’ at the NI Hair and Beauty Awards. The biggest highlight is the daily appreciation from my clients. We also have quite a few well known and celebrity clients, but with client confidentiality I can’t unveil who they are! 3. What are your favourite hobbies/ activities outside of work? I’m partial to a good karaoke night and my party pieces are Alanis Morisette’s, One Hand in My Pocket and Ironic. I also love horse riding and although I don’t get to ride as often as I did when I was younger, I just love getting out in the fresh air and it’s very

therapeutic. Horses are so intuitive and can sense your mood. They totally relax me. 4. What is your daily routine? I wake up around 7am and put a wash on before my two kids Blake (10 years) and Jessica (9 years) get up. I get them breakfast and ready for school, then do the school run. We’ve just got a new puppy Bruno too, so when I return to work he’s going to have to go to doggy daycare, i.e my mum! I arrive at work around 9.30am and the first thing I do is ask the girls what we’re doing for lunch. I’m always thinking about my stomach! I do treatments until 2pm, then spend an hour checking emails, then I head to collect the kids from school. From 3pm until the kids go to bed I’m on ‘mummy duty’ but I always make sure I get to watch Coronation Street. When the kids are in bed I catch up on paperwork, placing orders, doing the salon’s social media campaigns, then watch Netflix. I’m lucky that I do have a healthy work/ life balance. I really feel for mummies who work full time. It must be so stressful. I’m so grateful that my staff keep the salon running smoothly in my absence. 5. Do you have a specific fitness regime? Before the pandemic I had started with a personal trainer S Louise Fitness in Moneyreagh and she really pushed me hard. I was starting to see the results then lockdown started. I’ll definitely go back to her when lockdown is over. Horse riding is also great exercise and helps to strengthen your legs, as well as being great for your mental health. 6. Do you have any tips for staying positive during this time? Always remember that these dark days won’t last forever. I’ve tried to reinvent my business by introducing selling skincare 68

7. What do you think is the best thing about living in Northern Ireland? It’s like a small community and the scenery is stunning. No matter where you live in Northern Ireland, you’re close to the coast and mountains. I live in Killinchy and feel blessed to live so close to small beaches and the Mourne Mountains. Everything is accessible in Killinchy, should you want the peace and quiet or the buzz of Belfast’s thriving pub and restaurant scene. There are amazing restaurants in Killinchy too and lots of fresh produce. 8. What is your mantra or favourite quote that you live by? “Live Every Day as if It’s Your Last”. Do what makes you happy and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Eat the cake, dive into the sea and if you feel like doing something, do it. Don’t live with regrets. I did a charity sky dive and am very spontaneous. I hope this happiness and spontaneity rubs oﬀ on my kids. 9. Who has been your biggest influence? To be honest, I’m a free spirit and do my own thing. I like to go my own direction, but I’m lucky that my mum has inspired and supported all my choices, even if she didn’t initially agree with them.

FAVOURITE Movie: Jurassic World – Chris Pratt is my celebrity crush Band/Musician: I love James Arthur’s voice and I’ve been following a wee local band, 5th Avenue Book: The Secret by Rhonda Byrne Restaurant: Graze and Neil’s Hill in Ballyhackamore. The charity celebrated their anniversary in April conﬁrming their commitment and dedication to provide loving and forever homes for animals and to educate and promote animal welfare issues.

Making History! The senior Northern Ireland Women football team made history by qualifying for a major tournament for the first time. The team placed second in their qualifying group, which included tough competition from Norway, Wales, Belarus and Faroe Islands. By gaining the second place position in the group they were put into the play-off finals to see if they could secure one of the final places in the Euros tournament, which is set to take place in England next summer.

Ukraine were drawn as Northern Ireland’s opponents for the playoffs, and with Ukraine ranked 25 spots higher than Northern Ireland in the world rankings, we were certainly going in as the underdogs! The first match took place in Ukraine, which got off to a flying start when Rachel Furness scored in the 5th minute of the game. Ukraine brought it back to a draw, but a goal from Simone Magill saw Northern Ireland clench the victory they needed to put them a step ahead. It all came down to the second leg at Seaview Park in Belfast, all Northern Ireland had to do was hold onto their 2-1 aggregate – or even better win at home to end it in style. Kenny Shiels’ team had suffered some injuries, with goal scorer Rachel Furness out, as well as Lauren Wade, Abbie Magee and Demi Vance. The team had come so far to get to this point, so went out fighting to ensure they could make history in the green shirt. We had to wait until the second half when Northern Ireland captain, Marissa Callaghan scored a cracking goal in the 55th minute to put us ahead. Frustration set in the Ukraine team, with Natiya Pantsulaya making a red card offence in the 87th

minute of the game, bringing Ukraine down to 10 players. Super substitute, Nadene Caldwell came on in the last minutes of the game to replace captain, Callaghan, and then went on to score the second goal, which saw Northern Ireland clinch the victory they needed... they were on their way to the Euros!

NORTHERN IRELAND WOMEN REACH EUROS 2022

LEADING THE WAY Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness speaks to Northern Ireland Women’s manager, Kenny Shiels. Has it sunk in you are heading to the Euros? It takes a bit of time for that to sink in. We are now in the realms of trying to make sure we keep the girls’ feet ﬁrmly on the ground and we approach our training sessions the way we always have done, trying to improve as much as we can. How do you prepare for 2022? We have got a lot of stuff to prepare for, the Euros is secondary at the moment, because we now have six world cup qualifying matches in the autumn. The draw will be coming out for that pretty soon, so that is the priority at present, and we have to make sure we are prepared and ready for those ﬁrst of all. We were the underdogs going into the competition, did that make qualifying all the sweeter? Right from day one we were the underdogs. Everyone in the team and behind the scenes were on such a high after qualifying, it was great to watch and great to see them so happy. It was a shame there couldn’t have been a crowd to watch on the night.

Do you feel like this achievement has inspired other girls? Having this platform in women’s football is good for all ages, but more so for the younger ones, because they have their future in front of them. This has given them the kick they needed and has inspired them to continue their development. We are still losing too many girls to the game, in the development stages and we need to try and get that corrected, but we are definitely going in the right direction. Can you tell us a bit about your background in football? I learnt my skills in my father’s front yard and in the fields, he was a chicken farmer and he was really mad about football. I started playing football in primary school, aged 8. I went to a small school called Beagh Primary, just outside Maghera. The Headmaster actually came to me when I was in P4 and said Maghera Primary wanted to play us in a match, and asked if I would put together a team – bearing in mind Maghera Primary felt like the Man Utd of the primary school football teams. I got to pick the team, so you could say that was my first job in management. We ended up drawing 8-8, it was a fantastic game – I scored five goals! My family and another family went on to form a team called Bridgend in my father’s pig sty. I played for Tobermore and in teams throughout the Irish league before moving to a successful career in coaching, taking teams to Europe. Taking the Northern Ireland U17s to the UEFA European Championship finals was a particular highlight and getting down to the last eight.

Leading up to the two Ukraine games we had already made history by reaching those play-off finals alone. Our sole focus for those games was how we could beat them, so we didn’t want to let ourselves think beyond that. We have had a couple of weeks now to let it sink in, but even at that I don’t think it will properly feel real until we are back together as a team and start to plan for it. I must say it has been a whirlwind! You will be playing the World Cup Qualifying games in autumn first, how will that prepare you for the Euros 2022? We are finding out today who we will be playing in the World Cup

Qualiﬁers, and because we did so well in the Euro Qualiﬁers we have gone up the rankings, which stands us in good stead. It will be great to have those competitve games before we head to the Euros tournament – they will be tough games, but I see that only as a positive.

How did you get involved in football? I was really sporty as a kid. My love for football stemmed from playing in the street with my next door neighbour and we are still best friends now. I remember a youth worker put us in for 5-a-side games at Maysfield Leisure centre every year, but it wasn’t until I was 13 that I joined my first girl’s football team, which was Newington Girls. Do you feel like there are more opportunities now for girls to play football? It has definitely improved compared to when I was younger. My primary school was brilliant, I played netball and there were great opportunities for sport, but just not for football. In secondary school there was no girls football until I was in 5th year, when a coach from the IFA came in. I was lucky that my opportunity came to play football through a youth leader, Martin Foyle, who lead me to Newington FC. When we played at youth level it was always for fun, as girls there was never an opportunity to go professional and make a career out of it. It is amazing now to see women’s football becoming professional, hopefully that gives young girls now an extra bit of encouragement to push on and work hard.

Move your mood...

How did you get the chance to play for Northern Ireland? I played at U15, U17 and U19 level for Northern Ireland when I played with Newington Girls. I was 13 when I first played in the senior league, a year later I was doing trials and that is how I got picked for the Northern Ireland squad. With the U17 and U19 team you would get the opportunity to compete in the European Qualifiers every year. Myself, Julie Nelson, Sarah McFadden and Ashley Hutton all played together back then and still play together now. A photo of us resurfaced recently from when we were in Lithuania back in 2003. My first cap for the senior team was in 2010, but it all really kicked

off for me in 2015 when I met Alﬁe Wylie who gave me a pep talk. I was 26 at the time and he really wanted me to grab the opportunity, and I came to the realisation if I didn’t go for it now, I would end up with regrets. Giving 100 per cent to playing for Northern Ireland was something I always wanted to do, and luckily at the time I was working for the Belfast Community Sports Development Network who really supported me and gave me special leave for international trips. What would you say to girls who want to play football? Joining the Northern Ireland squad was the best decision I ever made – it has given me so many amazing opportunities. Football and sport in general opens so many doors. Some kids get to to a stage when they drop off, they want to go out with friends etc, and I admit I was like that too, but I was lucky enough to get a second chance. I really admire the young girls who have a lot of things going on in their life, which could push them a different direction, but have so much focus and determination to really go for it. My advice is also that it is never too late! What does it mean to you to represent Northern Ireland at the Euros? No words can describe what it means. To put it into context, getting into the Euro ﬁnals a few years ago was something we wouldn’t have even thought about, we didn’t think it could happen. The moment we started to believe was when Ashley Hutton scored the equaliser against Wales, because we had almost wrote ourselves off when we started the campaign. We have amazing back room staff who came in and instilled this huge belief. I think the word that sums it up is pride – there is no better feeling than wearing the green shirt and playing for your country. I can’t imagine what it is going to feel like walking out at the Euros.

Fans couldn’t come to the play-off matches, are you looking forward to having the support at the Euros? I think the fact that the tournament is being held in England has worked out really well for us. Our fans can just get a short ﬂight or boat trip over to see the matches, which makes it really accessible and not too expensive. I’m sure the Green and White Army will come over and support us in their numbers – we have won awards

for being the best fans in the world, so it is going to be amazing. We don’t want to be in the tournament just to make up the numbers, we really want to compete and we believe that we can do it. Northern Ireland were labelled the underdogs, does that push you to prove yourselves? When you look at our squad, we had so many players out injured and our squad is full of part-time players. A typical day for us is getting up at 6am to go to the gym, to go on to do a day of work, whatever that may be and then in the evening you will have training for your club team or international training, plus some of us have kids – it can be manic, but we do it because we love it. We played England a few months ago and a lot of us were starstruck playing against these professional, full-time players. We will be going against some of the best players in the world in the Euros, so we have a lot to prepare for but also look forward to – it is a really exciting time. Have there been any standout moments from the qualiﬁers? There are so many emotions that we felt throughout the whole campaign – we have had so many ups and downs, with players getting injured, then absolutley amazing moments, such as scoring that goal against Ukraine. The big thing we think about are the past players, they were the trailblazers and the ones who got us here today. Also Alﬁe Wylie, Noel Mitchell and Stevie Graham who did amazing work with the girls through youth level and beyond. We have so many memories now from the campaign, in fact Julie Nelson who is the most capped player has an unbelievable memory and can recall each game she has played in, so we joke with her that she should write a book.

Crusaders Strikers FDC are one of the longest established girls clubs – formed in 1993 as Newtownabbey Strikers, amalgamating with Crusaders in 2009 to become Crusaders Strikers. The FDC boasts 180 girls from all backgrounds aged 4-18. It’s built on a player development philosophy, all girls are offered the opportunities to maximise their own full potential, with development coming before winning. We aim to create good players and good people, improving life skills, such as confidence, communication, leadership and problem solving skills.

Securing premises at Dyan Mill was a no brainer for Armagh sisters, Sara and Niamh. In August 2020, we were on the lookout for a base fit for our exciting new brand, Urban Eden. The raw beauty of the Gear Room was the perfect base for us; the water wheel, which has been powering this Mill since 1829, softly turns in the shop. Urban Eden is trail blazing in terms of both floral design and processes. We are a foam free, plastic free, cellophane free business and we hold our carbon footprint at the heart of everything we do. Our floral arrangements are wild and natural, prioritising locally grown flowers and foliage where possible. Our services have been extended to include a postal flower delivery option, available to order on our website. And it’s not just flowers and plants on offer! We have collaborated with a handful of likeminded small businesses

to stock their beautiful and unique gifts to include handmade pottery, tweeds, soy wax candles, gardener’s gifts and of course something fun for the kids! Finally, the Dyan Mill hosts a fantastic Petting Farm (think monkeys and alpacas), Play Area and Restaurant. The Hungry Goat Café currently has an array of snacks and treats available to enjoy at the outdoor seating areas. The Hungry Goat Restaurant will officially open on 24 May when restrictions allow, beginning with outdoor dining for breakfast and lunches, and moving towards indoor dining when authorised. The Hungry Goat restaurant menu, which will include evening meals will be available soon. We hope to welcome you to Dyan Mill this summer!

TIME TO TEE OFF With lockdown restrictions easing local golf courses have been able to allow members back on the green for the ﬁrst time in months... and just in time for the glorious spring weather!

The COVID-19 lockdown has been hard on us all, so it has been a great relief for sport lovers and golfers to be back out in the fresh air, safely enjoying some exercise with friends and family. With the next phase of coming out of lockdown just around the corner, it won’t be long until the golf clubs across Northern Ireland can open up their facilities completely to allow people to enjoy a meal in the club restaurants.

Arts Round-up URGENCIES

URGENCIES (2021) is the second iteration of CCA Derry~Londonderry’s biennial group exhibition. The artwork selected for the exhibition comes from an open call that seeks to take the temperature of what emerging artists working today with a connection to our region consider to be urgent. Two key themes of identity and environment thread throughout the off-site exhibition as well as many other topics encompassing both deeply personal experiences and global political events. The artists explore questions of care and labour (Siobhán Kelly), mental health (Brian Farrell, Lucie McLaughlin), borders, technology and nature (Bryony Dunne, Christopher Steenson), home and self-expression (Kathryn Graham, Michael Hanna, Patrick Hickey), pollution and the effects of global crises (Martin Boyle, Edy Fung) and the role of the artist and communication (Frank Wasser). URGENCIES (2021) was selected by artist Locky Morris and CCA Director Catherine Hemelryk and features new and recent work ranging in media from print, film, photography, sound, painting, manifestations online and in daily life. URGENCIES (2021) would usually be held within CCA’s galleries at 10–12 Artillery Street, however due to the ongoing pandemic, the project is taking place offsite and online. Artworks are visible across Derry~Londonderry through the windows of landmark buildings, commercial spaces, homes and arts organisations also currently closed to the public. HOME - NOLI TIMERE The MAC presents, HOME - Noli Timere, a series of short films as a collective artistic response to our lives in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. As announced in the summer, HOME - Noli Timere, has worked to collate the photos, videos, lyrics and literature which have inspired hope in lockdown life. Translated as, ‘don’t be afraid’, Noli Timere was the final text sent by Seamus Heaney to his wife, Marie. The sentiment is equally powerful and appropriate in the context of the current pandemic. Submitted to the project by members of the public and artists alike, these artistic responses to the ongoing pandemic have been transformed into a series of short films that have been released as Facebook and YouTube premieres. Films include ‘A Belfast Prayer’ by Carol Rumens; ‘It Will Pass’ a film inspired by the notion of escape, both physically and mentally;

‘Blue is the Hour’ which marries words from Abby Oliveira with photography by Carrie Davenport; ‘Illustrations’ which has been created using photographic submissions from the MAC audience; ‘A Time Comes’ featuring a poem from Damian Gorman wonderfully performed by Suzanne Savage; and ‘Modern Myths’, written and voiced by Clare Dwyer Hogg and directed by Emma Jordan. Speaking of HOME - Noli Timere, Simon Magill, MAC Creative Director, said: “We are grateful to ALL the artists that contributed to the making of these films. Whilst we find our own paths through the pandemic, I think that it is vital to remember that creative expression, in whatever form, is not just essential, it is the very essence of human existence.” HOME - Noli Timere runs until 30 June 2021. AN ACCIDENTAL AWAKENING Over the last three years, as Accidental Theatre has built their Shaftesbury Square Venue, the creative team has built it with live streaming as a core part of future plans. Accidental regularly go live with performances and concerts. However this year the team, like all arts venues, has been put to the ultimate test. With lockdown and the theatre closed, arts festivals, gigs and performances all went online. Accidental has taken on this big challenge with aplomb and has maintained the quality of artist support and output. Entertaining audiences at home, in care homes and all over the world. The theatre has been working with a range of theatre companies, with students, with

musicians, creatives and even with Noam Chomsky and Daniel O’Donnell. In total, they have worked on over 160 livestreamed shows and have provided covid-safe rehearsal and performance space. It was therefore exciting news when Accidental Theatre recently launched their new Spring programming, an #AccidentalAwakening. They may still be waiting patiently for the news on theatres reopening, (after they were the ﬁrst to close over a year ago) but that has not stopped the team from bringing some fantastic new gigs, workshops and theatre to audiences far and wide. Duke Special & Temperance Society

Chip Bailey will return for another online edition of Duke Special’s Gramophone Club, a night of unmissable entertainment. Sole Purpose Productions are bringing their sell-out production of She Wants to be a What? to Accidental Theatre on Saturday 8th May. First performed in 2019 as part of the Stonewall celebrations for Foyle Pride this remount has been updated for a 2021 live streaming audience. The drama explores the journey of a transgender man from a mother’s perspective. It charts with empathy and dark humour the impact on their friends and family circle. Since April 2020 Commedia of Errors have brought Plays Aloud At Home to 932 isolated older people across Northern Ireland a production of theatre, poetry and live music. Plays Aloud At Home is the brainchild of local theatre makers Clare McMahon and Benjamin Gould in partnership with Radius Housing and in association with Accidental Theatre, and will continue to bring a smile to the elderly this Spring. Sixpenny Productions present Stray, a one-man show by acclaimed actor and playwright Cathal Ferris, who has recently swapped the bright lights of London to return to his Belfast home. Stray is one man’s tall tale full of fantasy, voyage of personal growth, friendship and humanity. It will be streamed from Accidental Theatre on the 14th of May and is not to be missed. CHOOSE TO CHALLENGE

In a project led by Beyond Skin, young musicians in Afghanistan and Northern Ireland have united to produce a music video based on a popular Afghan song ‘In Gham-e-be Haya’, meaning, Audacious Sorrow, composed by Ustad Salim Sarmast. This collaboration focuses on the International Women’s Day 2021 theme ‘Choose to Challenge’, and uses music to challenge the recent statement issued in Afghanistan banning girls from singing in school from age 12 years upwards. Three things wake me each morning. First is an alarm clock belonging to my upstairs neighbour who works as a bin collector for the local council; the second is the swarms of airplanes that thrust east out over the city, one after another, like giant untethered circular saws splitting the sky over and over, until it is, I imagine, a smithereened tectonic of swirling blue rhombuses; the third thing that wakes me is Christian, my third child out of four. His name is pronounced Kris-tee-ann, or so my wife, Bettina, insisted the day he was birthed in the back seat of a friend’s car I’d borrowed, because I cannot afford my own. Bettina and I were on a motorway lay-by on the way to the hospital after her waters broke; ‘Kris-tee-ann!’ she bellowed as I called an ambulance, but before it arrived Christian had already appeared and was beginning his first gentle mewlings. Bettina, though, was cold, exhausted, her thighs bloody, and she was thirsty and anxious. I was beside myself with worry. After the ambulance doors closed and it calmly drove off with her and Christian inside, I went home, made a hot chocolate and rang our neighbour to say I would be over presently for the two older kids, Horst and David. I then lit our gas fire and lay on the couch, and as the heat began touching my face and my arms I bolted to the kitchen of our tiny apartment and threw up in the sink and thought, with my stomach spasming horribly, how Christian and I already had a particular connection, seeing as I delivered him, or at least helped to, or at least I saw him in his entirety first – the godless gestalt of that moment. In any case, the third thing that wakes me in the morning is small red-headed Christian, now almost six years old, quietly climbing into bed beside my beautiful Bettina and I. Our youngest, Karl, has started kindergarten so Bettina has once more returned to her work as a legal aide. She

was a lawyer when I first met her, but once we had our eldest, Horst, she began working part-time as a legal aide for a firm of lawyers on the third floor of a terraced building three cobbled streets away from our apartment. I work odd jobs. My last was in a market selling bread for my local bakery. I’d stand for hours among the large-boned folk from the hinterlands of the city and sell dark-seeded breads wrapped in newspaper. Over the course of the winter, I’d become increasingly miserable and resolve to get a job indoors. Every winter it snows here for months until the whole place ought to come to a standstill, but the city struggles on inventively through its yard-upon-yard-thick fields of snow, its citizens like long-distance swimmers near a coastline with its waters covered in lard and felt and hare hides. The weather in spring, however, is astonishing; but the summer I find too hot, and in the park people lie around naked in the long grass all day, shining limbs bent skyward like small animals swaying drunkenly in the arid shimmer; the autumn then is colourful and astonishing too; and the winter, et cetera … When I am between jobs I try to write. I get a week or two every now and then and I go to a café near my house. The café is inexpensive, pleasant and quiet; lacqueredsteel-and-unstained-timber furniture, and little ornamentation – no cushions, no music. No children are admitted, no parents with buggies, no fathers with infants swaddled, no women with toddlers; no people that might harass the quiet. The café owner, Sebastian, is forthcoming and firm when he explains to people with children why they cannot enter; and they hate him. He speaks in a pedantic way but with a wobbly syntax and sometimes looking on at him speaking I realize that his words are things that suppress a rampant if unwieldy death drive. He tells these people that he has three children of his own, but there need to be some places for quiet in this city, some places where the expectation of quiet is possible, and his café is one. During my visits the café is often empty for hours, me at a table under the window of the front section, scribbling or typing, and he in the back cooking or rolling a cigarette. He smokes these cigarettes every twenty minutes or so. I think he does this to break the frustration of knowing, because he has made his café so quiet, that he will have to throw most and sometimes all of this food out. And because I am not intrusive company 104

he often appears beside me and wordlessly leaves a saucer of food on the table with a fish fork wrapped in a small pastel-green serviette. As he walks away I utter a subtle, ‘Thank you, Sebastian.’ Today is tremendously peaceful. It is snowing outside. The massive window of the café frames the descending flakes, each one the still centre of innumerable falling universes. I am writing about a man listening with growing disinterest to his brother who is describing a dream he had that morning where he saw his feet over the edge of his bed but realized that he could not put on his socks, and not because he was paralyzed, but because he had left his body and was entering his first reverse-moments of death. But because he had been happy in his life and wanted to go through with it, and to begin that day by putting on his socks, this brother felt an unspeakable disappointment at being dead, which amassed into a feeling of unendurable neutrality that almost as soon as it appeared, it sluiced itself, from its core, into a stark feeling of motherlessness. This brother then realized he could not weep, and this motherlessness, the aloneness of being aware, for a moment, of his endless death began to gather and mound and surge into the sorts of feelings he had no words for, even in his dreams, and with that he woke and was incrementally swathed in three types of relief …

Pupils at 11 primary schools across Northern Ireland are to benefit from a unique outdoor learning project thanks to a new initiative between Danske Bank and Eco-Schools NI. A driving force behind the initiative is to embed outdoor learning into core teaching, enabling children to reconnect with nature and come away from their screens. The programme involves creating a biodiverse and productive garden that incorporates an outdoor learning space at each school. Led by Jilly Dougan from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, the children have been helping plant wildflowers and fruit such as apple trees, plum trees, raspberry and strawberry bushes. The spaces also include bug habitats and a plank seating area suitable for small groups or a whole class. Volunteers from Danske Bank have been helping to create the gardens. Alongside the creation of the outdoor learning space pupils will benefit from a series of bespoke workshops and webinars on topics such as biodiversity, healthy food choices, picking, preparing and preserving fruit, and pruning, cutting and propagating. In Northern Ireland, the Eco-Schools programme is run by the environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. Charlene McKeown, Environmental Education Manager, KNIB EcoSchools said: “Time spent outdoors is more important than ever to ensure our mental and physical health and wellbeing are looked after. Much of the formal curriculum can be taught outside. These gardens will create an outdoor learning space as well as a safe haven for pupils and staff alike to spend quality time, and to learn. Thanks to Danske Bank coming on board as a partner for the project, we are able to help address biodiversity loss at a local level, providing a holistic opportunity for children to reconnect with nature and truly learn to love and respect it through outdoor learning.” Raymond Millar, Head of Property & Procurement Services at Danske Bank, said:

We’re delighted to be working with Eco-Schools on this exciting new project.” Arlene Poots, Principal of Lisburn Central Primary School, added: “At Lisburn Central Primary School, we are keen to provide opportunities for learning outdoors which will allow our pupils to reconnect with nature and explore our wonderful school grounds. This project has provided us with our first garden area in school, which will have a positive impact on pupils’ health and well-being as well as raise their awareness of biodiversity at a local level. Everyone in our school community is excited about getting outdoors to use the seated area for learning and we are all looking forward to harvesting the fruit we have planted. FOSTER CARERS URGENTLY NEEDED IN NORTHERN IRELAND Action for Children have made an urgent call for potential foster carers to come forward in Northern Ireland. Avery Bowser, children’s services manager, explained: “The need is very great in Northern Ireland at the moment but the numbers coming forward have been too small. “We know that there are lots of people who have the space in their home to foster but they are often put off by myths about fostering. They think it’s only for certain types of people. “We need people from different backgrounds and communities to become foster carers because our children are all so different. “At Action for Children we provide foster families that have the warmth and stability that enable children to cope with the changes that life brings them. We do that by recruiting ordinary people, from all walks of life, who do something extraordinary – become a foster carer.” Avery is asking readers to think about fostering or encourage someone else who could foster. “All kinds of people can foster. You have to be over 21, have a spare room, the ability to work with children and have the time in your life to give. “So please give our friendly fostering team a call. DO I NEED AN ENDURING POWER OF ATTORNEY? Yes, you do, if you want to choose the person who will deal with your property and affairs on your behalf, if you become no longer mentally capable of dealing with them yourself. You may choose one person (or several people) you trust, to act as your Attorney, and you can give them general powers to do most things with your property and finances, or limited powers to manage certain aspects of your property and finances. For example, you may allow your attorney to manage your bank accounts, but not your house. With your permission, an Attorney can: • Assist with the payment of Nursing Home fees from your account • Sign cheques and withdraw cash, when required • Buy or sell shares or property The Attorney’s powers relate to property and finance matters only however – they do not have any other powers over you! They can’t decide where you live or what medical treatment or care you receive. It’s essential that you have ‘mental capacity’ to make an EPoA. This means that you must be able to understand what an EPoA is and what making one means. To be lawful, the EPoA must be in the exact Form prescribed by the Enduring

Power of Attorney Regulations (NI) 1989. The Form must be executed (i.e. made and signed by the maker as well as the witnesses) in the correct way otherwise it may not be valid or it may not operate in the way that you wish. It is therefore very important to seek advice from a Solicitor who specialises in this area of law. Your Solicitor will keep the original EPoA safe, so that it is available if required in the future. Talking about EPoAs with your family or close friends can be a good way to think about what you want for the future. It will also help them to know and understand your wishes and preferences. It can be very reassuring to know that, if you are unable to make a decision for yourself in the future, someone you have chosen and trust will make that decision for you.
