RALPH LAUREN Everyone knows the Ralph Lauren logo of the polo player on his horse so after a bit of research we have discovered just how much turnover and how much money the owner is worth. You can get shirts, shoes, bags, aftershave, perfume, glasses, coats, trousers, you name it you have probably seen it with one of the world´s most recognizable logo emblazon on it. It is so popular that most of the “looky looky” men are selling items with the “fake” logo on all along the Costas.
USA’s Olympic Team Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz October 14, 1939 in New York City) is an American fashion designer and business executive, best known for his Polo Ralph Lauren clothing brand, and a global multi-billion-dollar enterprise. He has become well known for his collection of rare automobiles, some of which have been displayed in museum exhibits. As of September 2012, Forbes estimates his wealth at $6.5 billion dollars, which makes Ralph Lauren the 162nd richest person in the world. He went to Baruch College where he studied business, although he dropped out after two years, 1962 to 1964 he served in the United States Army and left to work briefly for Brooks Brothers as a sales assistant before leaving to become a salesman for a tie company. In 1966, when he was 26, he was inspired to 6
design a wide, European-style necktie he had seen Douglas Fairbanks Jr wearing, but the idea was rejected by the company he worked for as not being commercially viable. He left to establish his own company working out of a drawer in the Empire State Building, taking rags and turning them into ties. He sold the ties to small shops in New York, with a major turning point when he was approached by Neiman Marcus, who bought 100 dozen.
Edgar de Evia and Robert Denning, into the flagship store for Polo Ralph Lauren. This same year de Evia photographed the cover feature story for House & Garden on the Lauren home Round Hill in Jamaica, which had formerly been the home of Babe and Bill Paley.
In 1967, with the financial backing of Manhattan clothing manufacturer Norman Hilton, Lauren opened a necktie store where he also sold ties of his own design, under the label “Polo.” He later received the rights to use the trademark Polo from Brooks Brothers, however Brooks Brothers managed to retain its rights to the iconic “original polo button-down collar” shirt (still produced today), in spite of Lauren’s Polo trademark. In 1971, he expanded his line and opened a Polo boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
By 2007 Ralph Lauren had over 35 boutiques in the United States; 23 locations carried the Ralph Lauren Purple Label, including Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Boston, Charlotte, Washington DC, Chicago, Costa Mesa, Dallas, Denver, Honolulu, Houston, Las Vegas, Manhasset, New York, Palm Beach, Palo Alto, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Short Hills, Montreal and Troy.
In 1970, Ralph Lauren won the COTY Award for his menswear line. Around that same time he released a line of women’s suits that were tailored in a classic men’s style, which was when the first Polo emblem was seen. It was on the cuff of the women’s suit. Ralph Lauren released Polo’s famous short sleeve pique shirt with the Polo logo in 1972 and unveiled his first Ralph Lauren collection for women. It came out in 24 colors and soon became a classic. He also gained recognition for his design after he was contracted to provide clothing styles for the movie The Great Gatsby as well as for Diane Keaton’s title character in the 1977 film, Annie Hall. In 1984, he transformed the Rhinelander Mansion, former home of the photographer
On June 11, 1997, Ralph Lauren Corporation became a public company, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RL.
The Financial Times reported in January 2010 that the firm had revenues of $5 billion for fiscal year 2009.

Lori Goldstein: Style Is Instinct
Vogue On: Ralph Lauren
From its inception in 1913, through the Jazz Age and the Depression, to its reincarnation in the boom-boom Reagan years, to the image-saturated Information Age, Vanity Fair has presented the modern era as it has unfolded, using wit, imagination, peerless literary narrative, and bold, groundbreaking imagery from the greatest photographers, artists, and illustrators of the day.
With a foreword by Steven Meisel, it features more than eighty astounding images that she created in collaboration with the world’s finest photographers— including Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Bruce Weber, Meisel, and many others—for fashion editorials, renowned advertising campaigns, and award-winning music videos.
RALPH LAUREN is the latest designer to be celebrated in the Vogue On Designers book series, available to buy now. Written by author and journalist Kathleen Baird-Murray, the tome looks at the life and legacy of the man who changed the face of American fashion.

However with 20 per cent of the vote, petrol station flowers topped the bill to be named as the most disappointing present received on this romantic occasion. In second place was cheap and tacky jewellery, with 17 per cent of the vote followed closely in third place by large cuddly toys, with 16 per cent. Bargain bin CDs, came fourth in the search to find the worst Valentine’s gift, scoring 13 per cent. Unflattering underwear beat off cheap perfume to claim the unfortunate prize of the fifth most unappealing gift on February 14th, scoring 11 per cent of the vote.
All you can eat buffet vouchers and action movie DVDs scored six and five per cent to be voted in at seventh and eighth place respectively.
And last two places for worst Valentine’s present were taken up by tickets to a football match and single bars of chocolate. One respondent commented: ‘One year on Valentine’s Day I received a cheap CD containing all his favourite rock music. ‘Rock music on the most romantic day of the year, I don’t think so. Let’s just say the relationship didn’t last much longer.’
Another respondent said: ‘My ex’s mother celebrates her birthday on Valentine’s Day so he thought it would be best to get us both the same bottle of perfume. ‘He always was a bit cheap because it must have been 2 for 1. I still can’t believe he brought us the same presents, the cheek.’
One male, whose girlfriend took part in the survey, said: ‘It’s not just men who forget about Valentine’s Day, women forget too. I bet no one makes a fuss when it escapes our girlfriend’s minds but when guys don’t remember all her friends think he’s the worst boyfriend in the world.’ A spokesperson for NetVoucherCodes.co.uk commented: ‘It is important to plan ahead for occasions such as this. ‘It is not acceptable to think a bunch of petrol station flowers will justify as a present on the most romantic day of the year. ‘This will probably lead to you as well as the flowers being dumped in the bin.’

on wine in Restaurants These days, anyone who goes out to eat — and certainly anyone who orders wine at a restaurant — is looking for value. Here are 10 tips that will help you find value in wine at restaurants. Obviously, there are many exceptions to every one of these suggestions, but if we were going to give some overall advice geared to the moment, this would be it.
conditions. Our guess is that many restaurants these days, facing slumping demand, are in no hurry to replenish their inventory of wines with more recent vintages. That means wines that should have been drunk a while back are still being served. Whether you are ordering a pleasant Italian red or a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, make sure the wine is from a very recent vintage. (If the wine list says that 1. Skip wine by the glass. the wine is, say, 2007 and you get Restaurateurs like to make enough the 2006, tell the waiter you really on a single glass to pay for a whole would like the 2007.) bottle, which is great for them but not so great for you. And it wouldn’t 3. Bypass the second-cheapest be so bad except that so many wine on the list. Restaurateurs wines by the glass are poured from know that diners don’t want to bottles that have been open for too appear cheap by ordering the least long and mistreated after opening. expensive wine on the list, so they’ll Obviously, wine bars that specialize try to get you to order the secondin wines by the glass, and keep cheapest. The least expensive is them well, are a major exception. actually a pretty good deal at many places. 2. Check the vintage closely. We’re not talking here about 4. Scope out the owner’s ordering a 2004 Barolo from the passion for value. If there are, say, list and getting a 2002, which is a dozen wines from South Africa on a problem but not at the forefront the list and no more than a handful of concern for most of us today. from anywhere else, chances are Instead, here’s the issue: Most the owner knows and cares about wines are meant to drink young South African wine — and therefore and fresh and many restaurants, is more likely to know good values especially informal restaurants, from there. And all of this relates to don’t keep their wines in perfect food passions, too: At a restaurant 18
where the owner’s passion is fish, we wouldn’t usually expect to find great value in American Cabernet Sauvignon. If you are in a good Spanish restaurant the house wine is usually very good but ask the waiter or owner he will always know what is good and what is not in fact they will always change the wine if you are not happy with it. 5. Avoid trying to be “Flash Harry” and ordering the most expensive generally restaurants have a large selection of good wine at reasonable prices.
6. Try New labels enjoy the experience. We note as a classic example of this: If you stay within your comfort zone, ordering only wines you already know, you will be punished for it, price-wise. In addition, no wine is going to seem like a good value to you when you know you could buy it at a local store for half the price or less. That’s why it’s so important to focus on labels or kinds of wines that you wouldn’t otherwise see. Remember: There is value in tasting something new.
Sure, there are many other ways to find value on a list, but we have tried to focus here on simple stuff and things we actually do ourselves. If you are willing to put some more work into this, one idea offer discount on the price of morewe’d suggest is checking before expensive wines these days. you dine to see if a restaurant’s wine list is online. Finally, we understand that there are some restaurants where it’s This will give you more time to simply impossible to get good study the list to find good values. value because the prices of their And while personally we haven´t wines are uniformly ridiculous; done it, we know there are people those restaurants do not deserve out there who enjoy bargaining your business. Just remember that, 7. Don’t ignore house wines, and we’d guess that at least some in good times and bad, wine always by the bottle or in carafes. People restaurants would be willing to tastes better when it’s a good deal. who travel around the world often wish more restaurants offered the simple, inexpensive and delightful wines that seem ubiquitous in Europe and elsewhere. We agree. But we do think we are seeing a slight uptick in the number of restaurants in offering house wines — especially at informal places — and, more often than not, we have found these lusty and fun. 8. Look for half-price deals. Look around and you are likely to find a deal like that in your neighborhood. Some places are even offering half price deals by region — say, 50% off French wines one week and Italian another week. 19

When it comes to Phobias or fears, what we hold deep inside us, we need to distinguish between two types: We have the rational fears – the fears of real, possible consequences – the fears of genuine danger. A person with a fear of heights would never jump off a high cliff: in this case, his fear is real, such a jump would be hugely dangerous. A person with a fear of spiders has less of a rational fear… while there are dangerous spiders in the world, for the most part they are few and far between, and once you have identified a spider as being – rationally – harmless, any remaining fear is irrational. Irrational fears are no less real. They affect us physically, make us jump or quake, sweat or shiver. It’s not that irrational fears are bad fears – fears that it should be in any way embarrassing to have. Everybody has irrational fears. They are normal, and perfectly acceptable. However in approaching irrational fears we need to take a different tactic from approaching the rational.
PHOBIAS
In particular, living in Spain with these would prove problematic...
Alliumphobia - Fear of garlic. to this area, not always seen in abundance With Aioli on every table at dinner time and but the thought they are around you may be garlic in almost all Spanish recipes, the enough for you to handle. smelly stuff is fairly unavoidable. Phengophobia - Fear of sunshine. The Almeria region has around 320 days of sunshine per year and over 3000 hours of sunshine so if you suffer from this, you may want to reconsider visiting here. Staurophobia - Fear of crosses or crucifix. There are over 42 million baptized, covering about 92% of the total population. There are also 70 dioceses and archdioceses. The Spanish church oversees one of the greatest repositories of religious architecture and art in the world so keep your eyes to the floor if walking around. Taurophobia- Fear of bulls. The adopted national symbol for Spain and cause of much controversy but it’s image is everywhere, on the back of cars, in windows and on signs. Stay well away from Pamplona and the “Running of the Bulls”
ON THE OTHER HAND Cheimatophobia - Fear of the Cold. A fear of intense cold is called cheimatophobia, cheimaphobia or psychorophobia. A fear of cold, ice or frost is known as cryophobia or sychrophobia. Either way, this is one very good reason to be here in Spain and not the UK or Northern Europe.

Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German army during World War II. While on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. While recuperating, he designed improvements to the boots, with soft leather and air-padded soles made of tyres. When the war ended and some Germans looted valuables from their own cities, Märtens took leather from a cobbler’s shop. With that leather he made himself a pair of boots with aircushioned soles. Märtens did not have much success selling his shoes until he met up with an old university friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, a Luxembourger, in Munich in 1947. Funck was intrigued by the new shoe design, and the two went into business that year in Seeshaupt, Germany, using 26

Ayuntamiento de Mojácar
2014 Budget Approved Mojácar Town Hall’s Plenary approved at last Tuesday’s extraordinary plenary session the Budget for the year 2014. Accounts which add up to 10,061,610.78 euros, which represents in relation to the 2013 budget a decrease in nominal terms of 10.69%, and positive financing capacity and budget stability. The government team has defined this Budget as “real, austere, balanced and guaranteeing the payment of salaries to municipal workers.” Mojácar Mayoress, Rosa María Cano, stressed that thanks to the policy of saving carried out by the government team “we can reduce the debt with the banks by 733,500 euros.” At the same time, Cano pointed out that Mojácar Town Hall pays suppliers in 30 days and that the debt to suppliers at the end of November added up to 31,733 euros.
the same time, Rosa María Cano recalled the Junta de Andalucía’s incompletion with that outlined in 2007 of a works timetable for the construction of a treatment system in Mojácar. “In the face of this repeated incompletion, commented Rosa María Cano, I hope and wish that the municipal opposition works with the government team in requesting and achieving that the Junta listens to us and builds the treatment system.” Finally, all the opposition groups: UM, PSOE y MPSM, voted for making both requests Plenary meeting after Plenary meeting until the Junta de Andalucía fulfils its commitment.
The prevision of current income covers current the expenses and repayments, and even generates net savings. Such income decreased in nominal terms by 16.31% in respect to 2013. The biggest decrease in respect to the 2013 budget appears in Chapter 1: it’s 1,343,824.48 euros and is due to the decrease in the value of land in the new Presentation of Land Register Values, which comes into force in the 2014 financial year. There is no significant variation in the rest of the chapters. The 2014 Budget Project total is 10,061,610.79 euros, respecting the State of Income as much as the State of Expenses, and formally presenting the levelling out demanded in the Local Treasuries Regulating Law. In regard to expenses, Capital Expenses are down 22.95%, which represents an amount of 453,334.02 euros, while Current Expenses are down by 751,588.28 euros. Personnel Expenses take into account a decrease of 14.18% due mainly to that in recent years, departures due to retirement, etc., have not been covered. The Chapter of Real Investments expected in 2014 reaches the amount of 1,284,012.35 euros.
Rosa María Cano (P.P)
The third and fourth point on the agenda, both requested by the opposition groups, made reference to the ‘Request Junta de Andalucía Construction Treatment System’ and the ‘Request Junta de Andalucía Cleaning River Aguas’. The Mojácar Mayoress recognized the problem with the treatment of sewage due to not having available a purification system or due to the age of the facilities. At

Jerez
Flamenco Festival 22nd Feb - 8th Mar
Jerez de la Frontera is a municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in southwestern Spain, situated midway between the sea and the mountains. As of 2013, the city, the largest in the province, had 215,180 inhabitants; it is the fifth largest in Andalusia. It has become the transportation and communications hub of the province, surpassing even Cádiz, the provincial capital, in economic activity. Jerez de la Frontera is also, in terms of land area, the largest municipality in the province, and its sprawling outlying areas are a fertile zone for agriculture. There are also many cattle ranches and horse-breeding operations, as well as a world-renowned wine industry.
The Festival de Jerez attracts some of the most famous flamenco artists in Spain. Performers and students also come from around the world to take part in specialized workshops and classes taught by some of the best flamenco instructors. For the casual observer and fan, the main attraction has always been the outstanding list of shows. Past performances include artists such as Antonio Reyes, Belén López, Diego Carrasco, Manuel Valencia, María del Mar Moreno, Rafael Campallo, and Ramón Trujillo. The Festival also encourages more participation from flamenco novices, with flamenco dance and skill courses for beginners as well as seniors.
Flamenco originally crystalized among the Gypsies in the 18th century. In its earlier forms, it consisted of the song or cante without any musical instruments for accompaniment, with the exception of a long, dry stick that was held upright and rhythmically tapped on the ground. This is known as á palo seco, a term literally translating to “by means of a dry stick.” Subjects of these songs included various painful and powerful emotions felt by the Gypsies such as lost love, desperation, hardship, imprisonment, and death. Flamenco music was influenced by Hindu and Arabic music from the beginning, and the melodic song forms known as Arabesques and Melismas are fine examples of Arabic influence upon Flamenco.

Indalo
man
...“a prehistoric magical symbol found in a cave” The Indalo is a prehistoric magical symbol found in the cave of “Los Letreros” (“The Signboards”) in Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park in Vélez Blanco, Spain. It has been customary to paint the Indalo symbol on the front of houses and businesses to protect them from evil (similar to Kokopelli of the south-western USA) and is considered to be a god totem. As well as painting, it is also deemed good luck to receive the symbol to attach to the front of your house as a moving in gift for the same reasons. Usually of metal construction or as pottery of some sort, received as a gift and affixed by your front door is said to have the same affect.
burial chambers were in prominence, one of the best known in all of Europe being at Antequera, just north of Malaga. (named by the Romans “Antikaria – meaning ancient). The pictograph was named in memory of Saint Indaletius, and means “Indal eccius” (Messenger of the Gods) in the Iberian language. Legend has it that the Indalo was a ghost that could hold and carry a rainbow in his hands (thus the arch over the head of the man). The Indalo has been adopted as the official symbol in the province of Almería, Spain.

Soon to launch their website www.citizenadvice.org.es Here are a few articles which we hope will be of interest to you: A NOTARY’S RESPONSE TO A RESIDENCY CERTIFICATE One of Myra’s clients, who are residents, purchased a property in Andalucía. When drawing up the purchase contract (escritura de compraventa) in a notary office, the clerk was at first, not willing to inscribe in the document that they were residents in Spain. As far as he was concerned, he had no proof of resident status. He made the point that the A4 size green document which has replaced the previous resident card, (and even though accompanied by passports) was not proof enough. He did have a point. If they had been selling a property they would have been considered as nonresidents. This would result in the couple having to abide by the rule that, a ‘nonresident tax’ would be applied. Consequently; three percent of the total sale price would be legally withheld by the purchaser, purchasers lawyer or the banks gestor if, the purchaser had applied for a mortgage. The funds would then be forwarded, with the relevant forms to the tax authority. The gestor would also withhold a fee for the processing of this payment. You would then have a time limited period to reclaim the amount retained, minus any taxes you may owe. IF you have made your annual tax declaration on a yearly basis, you The resident document states, “La would apply for the ‘Certificado de Residente Fiscal’ (tax resident) with persona que a continuación se indica, ha solicitado y obtenido su inscripción this document, the three percent retention will not be withheld. en el Regisgtro Central de Extranjeros Consider that the rules are changing daily to safeguard against anyone de la Dirección de la Policía y de selling a property and then leaving Spain owing taxes. For this reason it is important to take further action to authenticate your resident status.

Imperative information for owners of a country property and for those considering purchasing in the campo. Written by Richelle de Wit from my personal experience. November 4, 2013 I personally would recommend taking out a membership of ASAJA... the union for young farmers, with seats in every major city in Andalucia... only costs about 50 euros a year and legal advice is free... their lawyer will write the necessary allegations later on in the project and will try his best to minimize the damage to your property. If he doesn´t succeed in this and you want to take the case to trial, you will have to start paying for his services or find a specialised litigation lawyer.
If you live in the campo and your property borders something that is owned by the Junta (see Catastro for info on that) at one time you could be presented with a letter from the Junta de Andalucia, dept. Medio Ambiente, telling you about a proposed project for Deslinde of: A)
A camino (track – most often in Deslinde-cases a former Real Lengua – used to move big herds of cattle from their summer to their winter meadow and vice versa)
B)
A monte (mountain)
C)
A rio (river)
The letter will inform you of the starting date of the project (when it was approved by the Junta), will refer to the Real Decreto with regards to the procedure that will be followed and will state that you can´t take any action against it at this time. You will need to get yourself a lawyer... preferably one with experience in this field.
My personal experience is with a Deslinde de Rio and we were presented with a plan to establish and document the boundaries of the river Guadalhorce that borders our land. Apparently, although the Catastro clearly stated the ownership of the river, with boundaries, by the Junta, the exact boundaries had never in the past been neither determined nor documented officially. According to the material presented by the engineers from the Junta, more than half of our property wasn´t ours to begin with, as it has been covered with water from the river at one or more times in the past decades... those square meters actually belong to the tiver and thus the Junta, they argue, and we should be paying rent to them to make use of them (within very strict limitations). If the proposal will be approved, there will be an automatic change of ownership of those square meters in the Catastro and the Registro de Escrituras, without any compensation I might add. We call this expropiation, but the Junta doesn´t and their engineers, when asked directly at one point in the very long administrative procedures (projects like this have a lifespan, determined by law, of one year, but they can be extended twice by 6 months and after that, if still not finished, declared caducado and re-initiated countless times) just flat out denied that as well. I won´t go into details on the exact procedure of a Deslinde project, but am willing to share my experiences with anyone who find themselves in the same situation. Just one more thing about properties bordering a river or an arroyo... 100 meters on both sides of the river/arroyo are called Zona de Policia and you need permission from the Junta, Medio Ambiente, Departemento de Agua, for practically everything you want to do there... keep animals, build a fence (build anything more substantial zero chance), plant, fertilise etc. If your waste water isn´t directed to the Registro´s from Town Hall, but collected in a septic tank, the kind of tank and the position of it is subject to very specific regulation as well...

Pierrepoint was often dubbed the Official Executioner, despite there being no such job or title. The office of executioner had traditionally been performed by the local sheriff, who increasingly delegated the task to a person of suitable character, employed and paid only when required. Pierrepoint continued to work for years in a grocery near Bradford after qualifying as an Assistant Executioner in 1932 and a Chief Executioner in 1941, in the steps of his father and uncle. Following his retirement in 1956, the Home Office acknowledged Pierrepoint as the most efficient executioner in British history. He subsequently became a publican in Lancashire and wrote his memoirs, in which he sensationally concluded that capital punishment was not a deterrent.

The execution was carried out despite pleas for clemency by large numbers of people, including 200 Members of Parliament, the widow of Miles, and the jury’s recommendation in the trial. After a 45-year-long campaign, Bentley received a posthumous pardon in July 1998, when the Court of Appeal ruled
that Bentley’s conviction was “unsafe” and quashed it. An article written by Pierrepoint for The Guardian, but withheld until the pardon was granted, dispelled the myth that Bentley had cried on his way to the scaffold. Pierrepoint had no regrets about her execution; it was one of the few times he spoke publicly about one of his charges and he made it clear he felt she deserved no less. Pierrepoint allegedly became an opponent of capital punishment. The reason for this seems to be a combination of the experiences of his father, his uncle, and himself, whereupon reprieves were granted in accordance with political expediency or public fancy, and had little to do with the merits of the case in question.

Al Murray, Pub Landlord Al Murray is best known for his stand-up character the Pub Landlord, a blunt, xenophobic licensee with distaste for anything not British (especially Germans, Scots and the French). First created in the mid90s, the character is still hilarious. He is well known for catchphrases such as ‘A glass of white wine/fruit-based drink for the lady‘, and for his booming, gurning, lecherous persona who dislikes students and homosexuals If we had no rules where would we be? EDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY Now, no-one likes the idea of their mother having sexual intercourse. But to start a global religion based on the idea that she never did... You see, in Britain we don’t have that American Dream thing, because we’re all awake. The USA eh? Sort of like something that started off as a good idea, but has gone down since. I mean they started off okay. They have places such as New England, Richmond and Birmingham, so you can see what they were trying to do... So I was talking to one of those health gurus the other day and he said to me, “Well, you eat too much, drink too much and sleep too much. To lose some weight you need to do more exercise.” “Don’t be an idiot,” I replied. “If I do more exercise then I’ll be more hungry, more thirsty and more tired.” My mate took his Grandad to one of those fancy Health Spas, where tiny little fish eat all the dead skin. It cost him £35, but it was a lot cheaper than a funeral.
With his distinctive accent and brilliant gags Micky Flanagan has steadily made a name for himself as one of the top comedians in the UK. You may have seen him on shows such as Comedy Rocks, Mock The Week, Channel4 Comedy Gala or Live at the Apollo. He has also toured Britain with his standup shows. My wife’s middle-class, she’s been skiing and everything. I’ve worked out what ambiance is. It’s a night out without poor people basically isn’t it. “I spent a year surrounded by people with no hope and no future”. and I said “well we could’ve come straight into the Wetherspoons really couldn’t we”.
My wife decided, she said “we are having sex on a Tuesday”. Well I thought that’s great because now I know I can leave myself alone, you know what I mean. Because you can get caught out, she comes in a bit frisky, and you have to look at her and go (shakes head) “that ship has sailed darling”.

Modern-day cruising for all the family
Once a privilege reserved for wealthy retirees, these days a cruise holiday can be enjoyed by people of all ages at a surprisingly low cost. With a massive range of cruise companies and destinations to choose from, that holiday of a lifetime is accessible to everyone, special offers, late deals and the availability of mini-cruises bring the lap of luxury within reach of most vacation budgets.
You may think a cruise is not for you. Not one for black tie and cocktail dresses? Hate the idea of sharing a dining table with a group of strangers? In fact modern-day cruising is a world away from days of old. No need to spend a fortune on new suits and ball gowns or remember which forks to use at dinner, casual cruising is the order of the day. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) famously revamped the somewhat ‘stuffy’ image of cruising by launching its ‘Freestyle Cruising’ brand, no set meal times, a more relaxed dress-code, huge choice of eating options and an entertainment programme with a distinctly ‘young vibe’. A cruise holiday is like no other, imagine visiting five countries in a seven-day holiday without the hassle of endlessly packing your case and checking in and out of hotels. Waking up to the sun rising over a new port. Not to mention some of the best cuisine you can find, in the themed restaurants or endless buffets. The evening shows are on a par with Broadway or West-End productions and the entertainment teams are on hand with a range of activities for all ages. 56
For the more introvert or laid-back passenger, quiet areas are set aside where you can relax and enjoy the view, taking in the vast ocean and dreaming of the next day’s destination. Cruise employees are some of the most attentive, courteous and polite you will come across in the service industry, from your cabin steward to the cocktail waiter, nothing seems too much trouble, always a smile and a friendly greeting. Choosing a cabin is a tough decision, the cheaper option is an inside cabin often featuring a cleverly designed picture complete with curtains, in place of a window. At the higher end of the price range is a balcony cabin or a suite complete with private butler. Just take into consideration how little time you will actually spend in your cabin with all the ship has to offer. Modern ships get bigger with each new launch, facilities such as swimming pools, casinos, internet cafes, gymnasiums and sports courts are standard, with newer ships featuring ice rinks, climbing walls, zip lines and under-water restaurants.
For first-time cruisers the initial couple of days can be daunting, the sheer size of the vessel combined with the vast choice of bars and restaurants can seem overwhelming but after a couple of days once you have found your bearings and begun to relax, regular holidays will pale by comparison and you will already be planning your next cruise before this one has even finished! Without having to board an aircraft, residents of the Spanish Costas have an excellent choice of cruise options with many companies offering cruises starting in the ports of Barcelona and Malaga.
NCL are offering a seven night Mediterranean cruise in January and February with prices starting from as little as 260 euros www.ncl.co.uk. Costa cruises and Royal Caribbean also have an excellent choice of European cruises with great offers, particularly if you are able to advantage of a late deal. Visit www.cruisedirect.co.uk.

Adele’s top-tips
• Take a mix of clothes, weather can vary from port to port. • Make sue you have a jacket or wrap for the evenings, ships are notorious for having the AC on very low in public areas! • Make sure you know the tipping policy, some companies have a mandatory one-off tipping charge which is easier than individual tipping. • Although cruises have a more informal dress code most will have at least one ‘party night’ where guests are invited to dress up. • On-board wifi can be expensive so save the Facebook posts for shore-visits where you will usually find a cafe with free wifi. • Although food is unlimited, drinks are usually chargeable so decide early on whether to purchase a drinks package or pay as you go.

Sotogrande Golf Cádiz
• 18 holes • 72 par • 6895 yards The Course RSGC is considered as one of the masterpieces of Robert Trent Jones who chose this course as one of his five favorites from more than 500 courses he designed worldwide according to what he wrote in his book “GOLF – THE MANIFICIENT CHALLENGE” published in 1988. Officially opened in 1964 Sotogrande was the first course Trent Jones designed in Europe and is blessed with his design philosophy, which consists of building courses perfectly integrated with the natural surroundings which are a great challenge to the
better players, but accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Nothing describes better a round on Sotogrande than these words. It is a fascinating course for players of any level which retains all the natural beauty of the land on which it was built only 150 metres from the Mediterranean. The course has a par of 72 and measures 6.304 metres. It offers long tees, wide fairways and elevated greens delicately moulded and very fast, which embody the biggest difficulty of the course. Of the 100 or so bunkers on the course 69 are placed around the greens which, warn the player to have great accuracy when attacking the pins. The variety of holes is another characteristic of Sotogrande, variety not only in shape and distances but
in its vegetation: the mixture of cork oaks, pine trees, palm trees and an abundance of other species, provide the course with a wonderful personality and beauty. A round of golf on Sotogrande is very well balanced. On the front 9 holes 4 and 7 will highlight good examples of the risk factor which Trent Jones rewards by asking the players to choose whether a hole should be a difficult par or an easy bogey. These can also be said of holes 13 and 15 on the back 9. The quality of the course is very well reflected by the quality of the champions over a period of many years. Among others there are Severiano Ballesteros, Jose María Olazabal, Roberto de Vicenzo, Sergio García, Padraig Harrington or Rory Mc Ilroy.

the world’s
our new feature bringing you a host of astonishing facts and figures from around the globe.
MOST... deadliest Creatures
This top 10 most deadly creatures is based on several factors including the amount of human deaths caused worldwide and other attributes such as size, strength, frequency of attacks and human interaction . It is a sobering thought to think of “man” as the top of list but for this article we’ll stick to the animals.
10: Poison Dart Frog
9: Cape Buffalo
8: Polar Bear
Native to the rainforests of South America their venom is enough to kill ten men and exudes from their skin. Natives run darts against their skin to use in hunting
The African Cape Buffalo will actively stalk and attack the hunter who wounded it. Each year it kills more humans in Africa than any other creature.
The largest meat eater living on land, polar bears are extremely protective of their cubs and attack viciously when there is a perceived threat. A polar bear can cut off a human head with a swipe of its paw.
7: Elephant
6: Aussie Saltwater Croc
5: African Lion
Elephants can weigh around 16 tonnes and are responsible for around 600 deaths every year through stamping and goring throughout Africa and India.
The largest living reptile on the planet mature males can reach 23ft in length and are opportunistic hunters using ‘death-roll’ to drown and suffocate their prey. Every year, over 2,000 deaths are caused by crocodiles.
The only cats to live in a group, African lions work together to prey upon other animals and kill around 70 humans per year in Tanzania. In total, lions are responsible for over 250 deaths each year.
Another deadly creature to mention here is the lesser heard of Cone Snail: One drop of venom from this little bugger is enough to end 20 human lives. Sometimes colloquially known as the “cigarette snail,” it has been said that when you are stung by this creature, you’ll have just about enough time to smoke a cigarette before you stop breathing. It’s not like it matters anyway though…there is no antivenom! 60
the world’s
MOST...
4: Great White Shark
3: Aussie Box Jellyfish
2: Asian Cobra
Since 1876 this shark has been responsible for 65 deaths worldwide and will develop a taste for human flesh once it has fed on a person. Each year 30-100 people die of shark attacks.
The most venomous marine creature known to man, each tentacle has enough toxin to kill 60 people. Since 1884 at least 5,567 deaths have been attributed to these creatures
Responsible for the majority of the 50,000 deaths by snakebite per year in India although it is not the most venomous.
1: Mosquito
Mosquitos carry the parasites that cause malaria which is responsible for the deaths of two million people every year. The infection, which causes fever and headache, and in severe cases can result in coma or death, spreads through human populations because malaria-inducing Plasmodium parasites living in the guts of female Anopheles mosquitoes pass into people’s bloodstreams through mosquito bites. There are different strains of malaria-inducing Plasmodium parasites, and different strains of host Anopheles mosquitoes. One of the deadliest parasites is Plasmodium falciparum, which is predominantly carried by Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes.
Let’s not forget the Tse Tse Fly: This large blood sucking fly is the primary carrier of African Sleeping Sickness and is therefore indirectly responsible for killing up to a quarter of a million people every year.
