Well that’s almost an end to another year, a very tough one for lots of residents and businesses. But there seems to be shoots of recovery with most of the Estate Agents having some success in selling property in this area and of course the exceptionally warm October that has ensured the bars have had clients eating outside later than most years. We are very pleased that many of our advertisers have stuck with us throughout the year and have gained extra clients through their adverts in The Ultimate Almeria magazine. Without these advertisers there would be no magazine so we would like to thanks each and everyone one of you and wish you a happy and successful 2014. While I am thanking people the contributors to the magazine that have helped make it what it is today and therefore a big thank you to Dean Baker our photographer and designer of the magazine what a superb job he has done, Adele Land for her informative articles on the Destination Report and Come Wine with Me pages and of course Sallie for not only her superb recipe each edition that I know lots of you try, but her help and support on the admin, delivery and sales of each edition. This edition has various articles that make this time of year special, from presents we can afford, to a few that we can only dream about. Some facts and helpful tips from CAB Spain and our QI page, crazy fiestas, darts rising millionaires, the Fosbury flop and the controversial Bernard Manning. I hope you enjoy this edition and the others we have produced throughout the year, of course if there is anything that you would like to see added to next year’s copies then please write to us at the email below. The next edition should be out in the second week of January allowing for the festivities including the “Tres Reyes” to be over. So if you feel that our magazine could help profile your business like so many others in the area call either Gary or Vicente whose numbers are on the contents page. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our advertisers and readers. Here´s hoping for a prosperous 2014. The Editor

FOSBURYFlop Born on 6 March 1947 in Portland, Oregon (USA), from an early age Richard Douglas Fosbury showed a natural flare for science and mathematics. He was also a gifted athlete, with a particular talent for the high jump. However, when he reached his teens, he found that, at 1.93m, he was already too tall to perform it effectively using either the traditional scissors jump or the more commonly used straddle technique. His personal best had plateaued at 1.80m, and so the young Fosbury realised that if he was to make further progress in the discipline, he would have to come up with a different approach. From 1963 onwards, Dick Fosbury started using a new technique of his own invention. Starting into a curved 6

Festive Fish Cakes

I thought this recipe rather apt, for this time of year. Comforting and wholesome , aswell as being quick and simple to make. These fishcakes are very versatile and can be served for: a starter, lunch, supper, even as an canapé if reduced to bite size and served on top of gem lettuce leaf with a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce!. They can be served with a nice crisp green salad, vegetables, parsley sauce or our favourite, crushed minted peas....yum. You can even freeze them (uncooked) and cook when required, ideal for those unexpected Christmas season guests.

Ingredients: These ingredients are enough to make 8 medium fishcakes or 32 canapes. • 800G potatoes • 650g Fish: Salmon, Cod or Crab ( fresh, frozen or tinned). Why not try a mixture of two types of fish! • Salt & pepper to season, as desired. • Plain flour to coat and cut the fishcakes. • Some veg/olive oil and knobs of butter for frying. • Optional extras to add to fish cake mixture: Parsley, Chives, Peas, Sweetcorn or Chilli flakes.

You will need: • Large saucepan • Drainer • Masher or potato ricer • Large mixing bowl

• Frying pan (use for poaching and then for frying) • Baking tray (only reqd if making large fishcakes) • Circular cutter or round object to cut fishcakes to desired size.

Method:

1. Poach fish (if reqd) – leave to cool. Remove bones and skin. Flake fish. 2. Cook and mash potatoes – do not add any milk or butter, just some pepper if reqd. 3. Put mashed potatoes into mixing bowl, add fish and any extras (as detailed in ingredients) and combine together. 4. Sprinkle a covering of flour over the worksurface/chopping board. 5. Divide the mixture into eight or appropriate canapé size and form each portion into desired size, either with your hands or cutter. 6. Cover the fishcakes all over with flour. 7. Chill in fridge for at least 30 minutes. 8. To cook: heat frying pan with oil and butter, fry the fishcakes until golden. If they are particulary thick or large, pop onto a baking tray and heat through in a medium hot oven for 10-15 minutes , to ensure that completely hot all the way through.

Enjoy!

La Legión If you drive down the motorway towards Almeria you will see the “ La Legion” symbol written on the side of the hill so after some research I have found out what the Legion is all about, I hope you find it as interesting as I have.

There is lots more information available on the internet and this is just a snippet. The Spanish Legion (Spanish: Legión Española, La Legión or colloquially El Tercio), formerly Spanish Foreign Legion, is an elite unit of the Spanish Army and Spain’s Rapid Reaction Force. Founded as the Tercio de Extranjeros “Foreigners Regiment”, it was originally intended as a Spanish equivalent of the French Foreign Legion, but in practice it recruited almost exclusively Spaniards and Spanish expatriates from Spanish-speaking countries. The legion and Paratrooper Brigade (BRIPAC), are considered quintessential elite units in the Spanish Army.

The Spanish Foreign Legion was formed by royal decree of King Alfonso XIII on 28 January 1920, with the Minister of War José Villalba Riquelme stating, “With the designation of Foreigners Regiment there will be created an armed military unit, whose recruits, uniform and regulations by which they should be governed will be set by the minister of war.” In the 1920s the Spanish Foreign Legion’s five battalions were filled primarily by native Spaniards (since foreigners were not easy to recruit) with most of its foreign members coming from the Republic of Cuba. The Spanish Legion was modelled on the French Foreign Legion. Its purpose was to provide a corps of professional troops to fight in Spain’s colonial campaigns in North Africa, in place of conscript units that were proving ineffective. The first commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel José MillánAstray Terreros, referred to his unit as ‘La Legión’ from the start but this only became part of the unit’s title from 1937.

The Spanish Legion is now mostly used in NATO peacekeeping missions. It has 5,000 soldiers in a Brigade of two tercios (regiments) based in Ronda, Viator and Almería (Andalusia). Two other independent tercios are deployed in the Spanish African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla as part of their respective garrisons. The legion is directly controlled by the Spanish General Staff. Although the detachment at Málaga was transferred away, each year a platoon of legionaries returns to march in the Holy Week procession with the Christ of the Good Death, a life-size effigy of Christ Crucified, adopted by the legion as Patron in the 1920s.

Wine with me

Winter Warmers By Adele Land

Nights are drawing in, seasonal festivities are just around the corner and swimsuits have been relegated to the back of the closet. Days of ice-cold beers and chilled Mojitos seem far away but that doesn’t mean the cocktail shaker and fancy glasses need to gather dust until the summer. A huge array of winter drinks are out there just waiting to tantalise our tastebuds, hot or cold, the choice is yours, liven up your party or spice up the dark evenings with one of these tantalising tipples. The Lumumba was named after an African politician, turn a comforting hot chocolate into something special with a generous dash of amaretto, rum or your favourite brandy, serve in a tall glass and if you’re feeling extra naughty add a swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate powder. A popular Spanish after-dinner drink is the Carajillo, a short strong coffee mixed with your favourite liqueur, my favourite is a ‘carajillo de Baileys’ perfect... Mulled Wine has been a seasonal staple for centuries, a favourite in the Victorian ages it is closely related to German Gluhwein. Everyone has their own recipe but the traditional version is made up of red wine (choose a decent bottle) warm gently in a pan with sugar and steep with cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. High street coffee houses offer seasonal brews, from Mint Mocha to Eggnog Latte in the run up to the festive period, be adventurous and make up your own at home, warmed milk, instant coffee and a glug of something from the cocktail cabinet and hey presto you have your own ‘barista’ style delight!

Irish Coffee was all the rage in the 1970s no visit to a Beefeater steakhouse was complete without rounding off the meal with one of these decadent treats. Slip on the flares with a brightly coloured shirt and revisit the decade of dubious taste with a liquid blast from the past. Brew some black coffee, pour into a (heatproof) goblet glass, add a good measure of Irelands best and top off with half an inch of single cream, poured slowly over the back of a spoon for a professional finish, the cream should sit on the top of the liquid, pop on a T Rex album (vinyl of course) and enjoy!

BENEFITS &of SAVINGS a winter pool cover A properly installed winter pool cover from Real Covers will seal off the pool and keep the water fresh and clean without any filtration and chemicals. The cover keeps out dust and debris. The cover is opaque, preventing any light from entering the pool. Mould and algae cannot grow because there is no light. A central membrane allows rainwater to filter into the pool. Just clean your pool at the end of the swimming season and shut it down.

What do you want from a winter pool cover?

• Increased child and pet safety • Reduced maintenance • Keep out leaves and dirt • Savings on pool chemicals • Prevent algae growth • Reduce evaporation and save water • Reduction on energy bills Let your pool hibernate this Winter. Along with the pleasure of owning a pool there is the constant need for regular maintainence to keep the water fresh and clean. For most pool owners, the swimming season on the Costa Almeria is only four to five months; for the remaining seven to eight months the pool is not in use but still needs regular upkeep.

needed until the cover is removed in the Spring. The opaque vinyl canvas is blue or green topside and black or beige underneath which ensures that no light enters the pool and therefore stops microorganism growth. The elastic straps are placed at 50cm intervals and attach to a stainless steel/brass fitting that screws down flat when the cover is not in use. All covers are made with a central membrane which allows rainwater to filter into the pool and exit through the pool overthrow. The cover is removed at the start of the swimming season and simply folded away and stored until needed. We also offer a cover fitting / removal service should you require it. Real Covers have been installing winter pool covers to many local villas for over 20 years. If you would like more information please contact Dany at Real Covers from the advert below.

A specially designed winter pool cover, installed correctly, will seal off the pool and significantly reduce maintainence, chemicals and energy costs. Real Covers pool covers are made from reinforced polyester vinyl and the seams and hems are heat welded for added strength. Each cover is made to measure for a precise fit and held in place by tight elastic straps that make it difficult for children to remove or lift the cover. The tensioned cover will effortlessly support a child’s/pet’s weight, providing significant safety benefits. Once the cover is in place, the pool pump is switched off and no chemicals are

Heading South Every year in early November, from the Northern USA States and Northern Europe, there begins a mass migration of retirees or “Snowbirds” heading for warmer climes, to spend the winter months in the sunshine. Traditionally an American phenomenon, this trend has filtered out to parts of Northern Europe, residents of Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and even the UK to name a but a few, wishing to escape the harsh winters by heading down to Spain and Portugal en mass. The temperate climate of Southern Europe is a great attraction for Northern Europeans, combined with a relatively lower cost of living, easy and relaxed way of life and of course a change of scenery. Our North American cousins, head for the warm Southern States of Florida, Arizona, California and Nevada, many actually declaring permanent residency status to take advantage of the lower taxes in some of these states. Once a pastime of wealthy retirees, “Snowbirds” now come from all walks of life and income brackets, with the increase in popularity of RV’s, Caravans and Motorhomes the option to head South for the winter is accessible for anyone.

In Palm Springs, Southern California, I spoke to Clive and Barbara Steinman from New Jersey “we have been travelling down here every year since we retired in 1998, the winters in the North East seem to get colder and the heating bills higher” explained Clive. “We find the rentals cheap and the cost of living even cheaper! Even our children and grandchildren fly down here to visit us, so we still get to spend time with the family, we feel like we have the best of both worlds!” Here in Spain the campsites of the Southern Costas are filled with Caravans and Motorhomes bearing license plates from all over Europe. Highly organised travellers, they come well equipped to set up their “home from home” with large awnings attached to their ‘vans, kitchen tents, annexes, dog kennels, “astro turf” lawns and satellite dishes! On the Marbella Playa campsite, I chatted to Len and Rita from Liverpool, whose cosy motorhome set up would put many apartments to shame, complete with 1.3m satellite dish, rotary washing line and even a couple of garden gnomes! “We usually set off from the UK in October and enjoy a slow journey down here, stopping off at some lovely locations en route, arriving here in November, ready to get set up for Christmas” enthused Rita. “We have met many people from different parts of Europe who come to the same campsite each year and have made some good friends”. It’s not just Motorhomers and Caravanners who spend the winters down on the Costa’s. With cheap monthly rental rates and a good selection of unoccupied properties to choose from, many apartments and houses are also occupied by “Snowbirds” preferring the luxuries of a “bricks and mortar” winter break. Some even make the move more permanent, deciding to make Spain their main residence by taking advantage of low property prices, then spending the hot summers with family back in the UK. With ever increasing energy bills, colder, wetter winters and more offers of early retirement, I can only expect that the “Snowbird” population will continue to increase and many more nationalities will be making the yearly migration to winter here on the Costa Almeria and other sunny destinations and quite frankly, who can blame them!

stepping up to the

The world of darts has completely changed over the last thirty odd years. Now the stars of this pub sport are millionaires from their skill at throwing their arrows. The stars of the 1980`s were not earning anywhere near the prize money, sponsorship money or even the cash from appearances that today´s superstars can achieve. Lots of this money has come into the game from television especially SKY Sports who have transformed the game from a competitive match on the stage to an almost spectacular event with thousands watching in large arenas to millions watching on TV. Nowadays all the players walk to the stage with their own theme tune belting out around the arena and following two models with the sponsors sashes on, this is now a televised event designed to make lots of money and pay massive prize money to the winners of each tournament. In the eighties the stars of the day such as Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Jocky Wilson, Cliff Lazerenko and theshowman Bobby George were earnings peanuts compared to todays players where a player in the top twenty can earn £100,000. The top player in 1981 was John Lowe and his earnings for the year was only £14,500 compared to the best earner this year being Michael van 34

Gerwin on £672,000. Although John Lowe was top the fourth player was Dave Whitcombe and he only earnt £2000 with the top 3 players Jocky Wilson (£7000) Eric Bristow (£8600) and Lowe being the only players to earn over £2500. Comparing this today to the top three Van Gerwen, Phil Taylor (£653,000) and Raymond van Barneveld (£298,000) and that is just from prize money.

properties that he rents out and a holiday villa in Tenerife where he hopes to spend his winters when he retires from darts.

Over the years there have been some wonderful personalities in darts from the players, Eric Bristow “The Crafty Cockney” Bobby George known for his gold chains rings and bracelets, Dennis “the Menace” Priestley, who always wore a striped back & red shirt, Wayne “Hawaii 501” Mardle and then, the wonderful commentator Sid Waddell. He would come out with the most amazing phrases to describe what we were witnessing on our screens so here are a few... “[He’s] as happy as a hound dog who’s won a year’s supply of Boneo.”

Phil Taylor has made millions from darts and was the first superstar of darts that drove a Bentley Continental although he now considers that to be a waste of his money and a petrol guzzler. It even had the number plate D4RT P which he still “If we’d had Phil Taylor at Hastings owns. He also against the Normans, they’d have has over 16 gone home.”

“When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer … [Eric] Bristow’s only 27.” Sid Waddell died in August 2012 at the age of 72 and The PDC World Championship Trophy has since been renamed the Sid Waddell Trophy in honour of this wonderful Geordie.

The traditional image of the dart player has completely changed from the beer swilling, beer bellied image of the late 70´s to the younger stars of today, a prime example of this is “Mighty Mike” Michael van Gerwen at only 24 and looking to be the World Champion in the next couple of years, perhaps even this year.

From the early televised games where players were allowed to drink pints of beer on stage it has been cleaned up for the audiences with only water on the stage although the vast majority of the crowds can be seen, to be drinking freely in the large arenas. So next time you are down the pub with your son or grandson pick up your arrows and show him how to play you never know one day he may be picking up the Sid Waddell Trophy and a cheque for a cool quarter of a million pounds. 35

Ayuntamiento de Mojácar

Three thousand Mojácar residents can travel free on public transport. Mojácar Mayoress, Rosa María Cano (P.P), accompanied by the Tourism councillor, Emmanuel Agüero (P.P), and Social Affairs councillor, Raquel Belmonte (P.P), presented in the Town Hall meeting room the first cards which give the holders free use of public transport in Mojácar municipality. Following the agreement between Mojácar Town Hall and the company Autocares Rodríguez, 1,530 men and 1,435 women, 2,965 people in person, have access to free Mojácar municipality public transport, ‘the yellows’, the only requirements being to be aged 65 or over and to be registered as a resident in the municipality. Commented Rosa María Cano: “The Town Hall covers the cost of the production of the cards, which is approximately five euros per unit.”

public transport in Mojácar municipality, an unlikely eventuality according to Cano. “Both the company and the municipal administration”, added the local authority leader, “have made a great effort in order that over-65s registered as residents in Mojácar can have free use of municipal public transport.” “It is a social measure aimed at alleviating in some way current economic circumstances,”indicated Rosa María Cano. Anyone aged 65 or over registered as a resident in Mojácar who has still not applied for the free municipal transport card can request it at municipal offices. The first cards handed out.

As well as stressing that the card in non-transferable, the Mojácar Mayoress highlighted they have indefinite validity as long as the Town Hall does not change the company responsible for Rosa María Cano (P.P)

Improvements to Mojácar. At the last Local Government Council session on 17th October 2013, councillors from the Popular Party government team, led by Rosa María Cano, Mayoress of the Municipality, approved the definitive allocation of works to carry out improvements to a number of streets in Mojácar Municipality. The works will be carried out on the following streets: calle Melodía, calle Mezquita, calle Palangre, calle Alhambra, calle Dinamarca (corner of calle Portugal and calle España), calle Italia, calle Grecia and calle Llanos del Abejorro.

Without doubt, the large number of residents who live in the Mojácar Playa area will be pleased with the final result, which is expected to be at the end of this year. Although the initial budget allocation for carrying out the works was around 388,138.57€, said works, including improvements, have finally been allocated for a lesser amount (299,078.50€), representing a saving of 89,060.07€, which will make it possible for the Town Hall to use this amount to carry out improvements on more streets in the municipality, where it is needed.

Beach bar disciplinary sanction, Mojácar maritime land area. In relation to the news in a number of provincial media concerning a disciplinary sanction, for which a fine and demolition order is imposed for a beach bar, located in Mojácar Municipality, Mojácar local authority states that said disciplinary action, with the sanctions derived from this, has not been processed at Mojácar Town Hall.

The natural landscape with its abundant flora & fauna has an unique feel. Cabrera has not been affected by the building boom and has kept its special ambience. Approximately 25 years ago an English architect with name Peter Grosscurth started an ambitious project, he was building at the golf course in Cortijo Grande, at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera when he developed the idea of an Moorish village crawling up the the mountains. He used terracotta colours, Moorish tiles and ornaments, not one house is similar to another. Wierd and Wacky Fiestas It’s a little difficult to narrow down Spain’s list of weird and wacky festivals to fit on this page - so many of them would be considered bizarre to anyone born outside of Spain! People being chased by a herd of angry bulls and throwing tomatoes at each other are just some of Spain’s most famous rituals that are carried out in the name of ‘tradition’, but there’s plenty more bizarre festivals if you scratch beneath the surface. Staying Safe the Spanish Way: Got a newborn baby? Want to keep them safe from evil spirits? Do what they do at the El Colacho festival in Castillo de Murcia, near Burgos, and lie them on the ground and have grown men dressed as devils jump over them. Never mind protection from evil spirits, who is protecting the babies from the grown men dressed as devils that are jumping over them...?

Throwing Fiestas WINE: If Lanjaron has plenty of water, in La Rioja there is no shortage of wine. But, if truth be told, some of it is so bad that no-one really wants to drink it. So why not throw it at your neighbour, instead? Where: Haro, La Rioja. FLOUR: December 28 in Spain is ‘Dia de los Innocentes’, the Spanish equivalent to April Fools’ Day. Much of the japes that take place are similar to in other parts of the world, except in Ibi (near Alicante), where the locals mark the occasion with the Els Enfarinats festival, in which they throw flour at each other. I couldn’t think of a better way. Where: Ibi, Alicante. When: December 28 FLOWERS: The citizens of Valencia hit the pretty Falleras with flowers during the July Festival. Well, it’s their fault for being so beautiful, right? Lou Reed would have been proud. Where: Valencia When: July WATER: They’re a civilised lot in the Alpujarras. When they throw things at each other, it’s clean. What’s more, it’s not as environmentally unfriendly as it sounds - the spa town of Lanjarón (where the fiesta takes place) has water in abundance. Where: Lanjaron, Granada. When: August

PAINT: If wine and tomatoes don’t have the staining capacity that you’re looking for, how about paint and oil? The Cascamorras festival, where this barrage of abuse takes place, is all in the name of a statue that one town has and the other one wants. Where: Guadix and Baza When: September ANTS: If you thought the above festivals were strange, what about this weird carnival tradition? In the small town of Laza, Galicia, the locals let their hair down before the sobriety of Lent by throwing all manner of strange things at each other - and the strangest of strange projectiles is ants! But, like, I’ve seen Jungle Book, wouldn’t they just crawl over your arm? How exactly do you throw an ant? Answers on a postcard. Where: Laza, Galicia. When: Carnival. RATS: Oh dear, can it get any worse? The Battle of the Dead Rat, in the Valencian town of El Puig takes things a little further than most people can stomach. During the fiesta of San Pedro Nolasco, again in the name of tradition, people throw rats at each other. Come to think of it, what would be better, a dead rat or a live one? Where: El Puig, Valencia Let us know if you know of any other strange celebrations near you!

ATTENBOROUGH Sir David Frederick Attenborough (born 8 May 1926) is an English broadcaster and naturalist and certainly the most famous in the world having presented for over 60 years. Sir David is widely considered a national treasure in Britain, although he himself does not like the term. In 2002 he was named among the 100 Greatest Britons following a UK-wide vote. He is a younger brother of the director, producer and actor Richard Attenborough. His career as the face and voice of natural history programmes started in the 1950´s. He is best known for writing and presenting the nine Life series, in conjunction with the BBC Natural History Unit. He is also a former senior manager at the BBC, having served as controller of BBC Two and director of programming for BBC Television in the 1960s and 1970s. He is the only person to have won a BAFTA in black and white, colour, HD and 3D. 42

Attenborough was born in Isleworth, west London, but grew up in College House on the campus of the University College, Leicester, where his father, Frederick, was principal. He is the middle of three sons (his elder brother, Richard, became an actor and his younger brother, John, an executive at Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo).

After leaving the Navy, Attenborough took a position editing children’s science textbooks for a publishing company. He soon became disillusioned with the work and in 1950 applied for a job as a radio talk producer with the BBC. Although he was rejected for this job, his CV later attracted the interest of Mary Adams, head of the Talks (factual broadcasting) department of Attenborough spent his childhood the BBC’s fledgling television service. collecting fossils, stones and other natural specimens. Later the same year, he filmed elephants in Tanzania, and in 1969, he made a three-part series on the cultural history of the Indonesian island of Bali. For the 1971 film A Blank on the Map, he joined the first Western expedition to a remote highland valley in New Guinea to seek out a lost tribe.

His career as the face and voice of natural history programmes started in the 1950´s. He is best known for writing and presenting the nine Life series, in conjunction with the BBC Natural History Unit.

Through this programme, Attenborough met Jack Lester, the curator of the zoo’s reptile house, and they decided to make a series about an animal-collecting expedition. The result was Zoo Quest, first broadcast in 1954, where Attenborough became the presenter at short notice due to Lester being taken ill. In 1957 the BBC Natural History Unit was formally established in Bristol. Attenborough was asked to join it, but declined, not wishing to move from London where he and his young family were settled. Instead, he formed his own department, the Travel and Exploration Unit, which allowed him to continue to front Zoo Quest as well as produce other documentaries, notably the Travellers’ Tales and Adventure series. In the early 1960s, Attenborough resigned

In the 1990s, Attenborough continued to use the “Life” moniker for a succession of authored documentaries. In 1993 he presented “Life in the Freezer”, the first television series to survey the natural history of Antarctica. Although past normal retirement age, he then embarked on a number of more specialised surveys of the natural world, beginning with plants. They proved a difficult subject for his producers, who had to deliver five hours of television featuring what are essentially immobile objects. The result, “The Private Life of Plants” (1995), showed plants as dynamic organisms by using time-lapse photography to speed up their growth. 43

Santiago

de Compostela

The capital city of the Galicia region in northwestern Spain, Santiago de Compostela is famous as the final destination of the traditional pilgrimage known as Camino de Santiago. Also called the Way of St. James, this pilgrimage dates back to Medieval times and is important to many because it is believed that Santiago de Compostela is where St. James, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, is buried. Today, the city attracts thousands of visitors every year for both its religious tradition and history. The arriving point for most pilgrims is the main square, Praza do Obradoiro. Situated in the heart of the city, this bustling plaza is the scene of many important landmarks, particularly the Santiago Cathedral where the tomb of St.

James is located. Other historic buildings here are GelmĂŒrez Palace, Rajoy Palace, Catholic Kings Hostal and San Jeronimo College. The Pilgrimage Museum is a good place to learn all about the history and significance of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage while the Museum of the Galician People showcases the culture and history of the region. Trendy shops, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants can be found within the city’s New District, Zona Nova, as well as a variety of pubs and clubs offering a wide range of music genres, dancing and live performances.

with coffee beans and fruits that is set on fire prior to drinking as a tradition of warding off evil spirits. Santiago de Compostela is small enough to walk around although buses and taxis are available. Santiago de Compostela has a humid oceanic climate, with drier summers, a bit similar to the coasts of Oregon and Washington. The prevailing winds from the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains combine to give Santiago some of Spain’s highest rainfall.

Local food and drink specialties include boiled octopus and queimada, a brandy concoction mixed

Secretariat stood approximately 16.2 hands (66 inches, 168 cm) tall, and weighed 1,175 pounds (533 kg), with a 75-inch girth, in his racing prime. The story of Secretariat began with the toss of a coin in 1969 between Penny Chenery of Meadow Stable and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable. The coin toss the idea of Phipps, owner of Bold Ruler, and “Bull” Hancock of Claiborne Farms as a way to get the very best mares for Bold Ruler, and when the toss went their way, to add well-bred fillies to their own broodmare band.

Bold Ruler was considered one of the important stallions of his time. He had a fine balance between speed and stamina, and though he finished fourth in the 1957 Kentucky Derby at a mile and a quarter, he won the Preakness two weeks later at a mile and three sixteenths, and went on to win three major stakes at the Derby’s 10-furlong distance.

After his racing career, Bold Ruler was retired to Claiborne Farms, but was still controlled by the Phipps family. In 1969, Hasty Matelda was replaced by Cicada, but she did not conceive. Both parties assumed Somethingroyal would deliver a healthy foal in the spring of 1970. This left Chenery with the unborn foal of Somethingroyal. On March 30, at 12:10 a.m., Somethingroyal foaled a bright-red chestnut colt with three white socks and a star with a narrow blaze. By the time the colt was a yearling,

he was still unnamed. Meadow Stable’s secretary, Elizabeth Ham, had submitted five names to the Jockey Club, all of which were denied for various reasons. Approval finally came with the sixth submission, a name Ham herself picked from a previous career association, “Secretariat”

COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY

Bernard Manning

Racist, Bigoted, Unpleasant or just a keen and very funny observer of human life..? Loved or hated and with the controversial jokes aside (although many here have been censored!) he could still make you laugh. Two old maids on a beach, streaker ran past, one had a stroke, the other one couldn’t reach. Man says to his wife: ‘Pack your bags, I’ve won the pools.’ She says: ‘What should I pack? Something light, something warm? Where are we going?’ He says: ‘We’re going nowhere. Just pack your bags and clear off.’

I feel sorry for people that don’t drink, because when they wake up in the morning, that’s the best they’re going to feel all day. Quasimodo was running down the street chased by a group of kids. He said, ‘For the last time, I haven’t got your football.’

I don’t believe Scots are as tight as people say, but I did hear that when two taxis collided in Glasgow recently 48 people were injured.

I went to Anfield the other day to watch a match. A scouse lad said, ‘Can I mind your car for you mister?’ I said, ‘No! And for your information, there’s a Rottweiler in the back.’ The lad said: ‘Put out fires, can he?’

I went to see that Pavarotti last week and he was a right miserable git. He doesn’t like it when you join in.

A Yorkshire couple go to the Costa Brava for a holiday, but on arrival, the wife says “I won’t be able to make

MEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY FUNNY JOKES LAUGH COMEDY gravy with your dinner, love - I’ve forgotten the Bisto” The husband says, “Don’t worry, there’s an English couple staying in the next apartment, I’ll see if they have any” So he knocks on the door of the next apartment, and says to the man” ‘Allo, ‘hast any Bisto” To which the man replies “clear off, you Spanish prat!”” When you tell a joke to a farmer, he laughs three times--once when you tell it, once when you explain it, and once when he gets it. For farmers love to laugh. When you tell a joke to a merchant, he laughs twice--once when you tell it, and once when you explain it. But although he is polite company, he will never understand the joke. When you tell a joke to an officer, he laughs once--when you tell it. For he never gives you a chance to explain it, and it goes without saying that he will never understand it. But when you tell a joke to a Jewish person, before you’re even finished

he’s interrupting you--he’s heard that one before, and “you’re telling it all wrong!” So then he tells you the joke-and in a much better version than your own. There’s two fellas running down the road “help! help! a lions escaped” A passer-by said “which way did it go?” One of the fellas says “you stupid idiot, you don’t think we’re flippin’ chasing it do ya?” A doctor doing his rounds in a Mental Insitution. He goes into the 1st room and there’s a patient going, “Brum, brum, brum, vroooom”. Doctor “What you doing?” Patient “Driving my ferrari!” Doctor “You’ve got no car!” The patient in the next bed say’s, “You shouldn’t have told him that, I get £10 a week for washing that car!” A guy walks into a shop and says: “I’d like to buy a wasp.” The shopkeeper says:”A wasp? But we don’t sell wasps.”

“Why not? You’ve got one in the window.” My wife was nagging me again yesterday. “If you were half a man, you’d take the kids to the circus.” If I was half a man, I’d be in the circus! The Roman empire, 100,000 men and stretching 20 miles long are marching through Europe and Caesar is at the front leading them, suddenly Caesar shouts HALT!! and a soldier from the back starts running to the front as fast as he can, over stoney uneven ground and through water up to his waist. He finally gets to the front after running 10 hours in the blazing heat and says to Caesar “yes, you shouted for me?” Caesar says “no i shouted HALT!!” so the soldiers says “ah crap I thought you shouted Walt!!” Bernard John Manning (13 August 1930 – 18 June 2007)

The Stadium Course PGA Golf de Catalunya

• • • •

18 holes 72 par 7205 yards Parkland / Woodland.

The Stadium Course at PGA Golf de Catalunya was designed by Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles. This is a par 72 golf course which offers five sets of tees from each of its holes making it suitable for all levels of golfer. This golf course has been regarded as a “technicians” course due to the numerous amounts of obstacles that require negotiation. There are old oak trees, evergreens and heather encroaching the sides of the fairways. Furthermore, there is a fair bit of water on this course along with many hills making this a great physical and mental workout. Since opening to the public, this stunning and spectacular course has been considered one of the best

56

golf courses in Europe, having recently been named the 88th best course in the world, 3rd in continental Europe and number 1 in Spain. It has hosted a number of major tournaments on the European Tour and is the subject of constant praise from professionals but don’t get too confident. The beauty of the course can be a distraction to the many dangers that threaten to damage your scorecard. Be aware that the course makes no concessions to players, and requires maximum attention on fairways which are literally besieged by trees, strategically placed bunkers and lakes on seven of the most difficult holes. These numerous challenges encourage players to come back again and again to test their skills. It is difficult to find so many memorable holes on a single course, and

despite its undulating terrain, the tees are in an elevated position and there are very few fairways that point uphill. The sensational dogleg hole 6 is one of those rare exceptions, a challenge that requires a great drive and total concentration.

“Wild Child” Motorbike. €545k

As the owner of this 25-carat rough Forevermark® diamond, you’ll travel deep into the heart of Africa to discover where your stone began its journey more than one billion years ago.

Its time to take your Neiman Marcus 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, one of only 10 in the world, for an afternoon of motoring.

Like master motorcycle fabricator Indian Larry, you feel at your best on the back of a bike with the wind in your face.

With its elegant profile and confident, sexy stance, this automotive masterpiece scores high marks on good looks alone. But there’s more to this machine than meets the eye. Beneath its exterior exists the culmination of a century of technological and engineering prowess.

Handbuilt in Brooklyn, New York, for the Discovery Channel “Biker Build-Off” series, “Wild Child” is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Indian Larry’s artistic achievements.

With a trip to the De Beers headquarters in London, where you receive your exceptional diamond in its rough and uncut form and meet the master craftsman who will hand-cut and polish it to perfection. A private tour of The Crown Jewels and dinner with De Beers and Forevermarks CEOs in the Tower of London. Then off on a vessel off Namibia’s coast, where your diamond was discovered deep within the ocean floor. Upon returning to the United States, you’ll meet with jewellery designer Maria Canale to design the ring that will hold your exceptional diamond. 60

Handbuilt in Gaydon, England, with a 100% carbon fiber shell—the first ever in Aston Martin’s history. A new, naturally aspirated 6.0-liter, V-12 engine produces some 565 horsepower and is tuned to deliver 457 pound-feet of torque. With bespoke leather luggage to match, truly an car fit for a secret agent perhaps?

In 2003, Larry rode “Wild Child” from St. Louis, Missouri, to Sturgis, South Dakota, where Larry’s bike was named the winner of the BuildOff, one of three unprecedented consecutive wins for the chopper enthusiast. Indian Larry famously declared, “There are no winners! There are no losers!” He shared his victory with fellow competitor and they both cut the trophy into pieces, signed them, and handed them out to the crowd.

Three great books that would make brilliant Christmas presents: Top 3 best sellers at Waterstones

Helen Fielding Mad About The Boy

Harry Redknapp Always Managing

David Jason My Life

When Helen Fielding first wrote Bridget Jones’ Diary, charting the life of a 30-something singleton in London in the 1990s, she introduced readers to one of the most beloved characters in modern literature.

‘From kicking a ball as a kid under the street lamps of Poplar and standing on Highbury’s North Bank with my dad, to my first game at West Ham, I was born head over heels in love with football. It saved me, and 50 years on that hasn’t changed one bit - I’d be lost without it.’

Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Giving up on an unloved career as an electrician, he turned his attention to acting and soon, through a natural talent for making people laugh, found himself working with the leading lights of British comedy in the 1960s and ‘70s: Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Bob Monkhouse and Ronnie Barker.

With her hotly anticipated third instalment, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Fielding introduces us to a whole new enticing phase of Bridget’s life set in contemporary London, including the challenges of maintaining sex appeal as the years roll by and the nightmare of drunken texting, the skinny jean, the disastrous email cc, total lack of twitter followers, and TVs that need 90 buttons and three remotes to simply turn on.

Harry is the manager who has seen it all - from from a dismal 70s Portakabin at Oxford City and training pitches with trees in the middle to the unbeatable highs of the Premiership, lifting the FA Cup and taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League. With hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours. It wasn’t until 1981, With his much loved, no-nonsense delivery, with a sheepskin jacket, a flat cap, and a Harry brings us a story filled with passion old Reliant Regal, that he found the part and humour that takes you right inside that would capture the nation’s hearts: the beloved Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter in Only every drama of his career. Fools and Horses. An uproariously funny novel of modern life, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy Harry finally tells the full story of all the David’s is a touching, funny and warmis a triumphant return of our favourite controversial ups and downs hearted story, which charts the course of Everywoman his incredible five decades at the top of the entertainment business.

XMAS HITS

To celebrate Christmas 2013, we take a peak at the Official Charts Company Top 10 biggest selling Christmas songs of all time as of last year. With more records sold in the run up to Christmas than a typical chart week, the Christmas Number 1 is THE chart topper every artist wants to achieve. And it has been this way since the Official Singles Chart began 60 years ago. To have a Christmas Number 1 on your musical CV means you really are the best of the best; capturing the hearts and minds of the nation… That, or you’ve managed to dazzle the British public with your, um, uniqueness (yes, we’re talking about you Mr Blobby). However, not all of the biggest selling Christmas singles have been to Number 1 (two in the Top 10 peaked at Number 2, and one peaked at Number 5), and not all of the biggest selling Christmas singles have necessarily been, well, Christmassy. These tracks may or may not have religious overtones, but have nevertheless captured the essence of what this special time of year is about. At Number 1 on the countdown is Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? - the landmark charity single helmed by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to help raise funds and awareness for the 1984 Ethiopian famine. Featuring an all-star cast including members of The Who, U2 and Genesis to name but a few, Do They Know It’s Christmas? has sold a staggering 3.7 million copies to date and is the second biggest selling single of all time. The 20th anniversary version of the track is at Number 6 in the countdown with sales of 1.17 million copies.
