WELCOME Happy New Year to all our advertisers and readers, here´s hoping you all have a prosperous 2015. What superb weather we are having. During the day it´s as though Winter hasn´t started, let´s hope I`m not eating my words in mid January. We would like to thank all our advertisers who have supported us over the last year and in fact from the previous 4 years since we started the magazine. Now the magazine is gradually growing bit by bit with the first edition of Costa Blanca North launched in December making the third in the family. With any luck one or two others will be produced in the coming year. We would just like to congratulate the winner of our Christmas TV competition, Carol Lockhart who got all the answers correct and thank you but bad luck to all the others who entered. Carol will receive a mobile phone from GSF Communications in Mojacar. Please support all our advertisers and tell them you saw them in the Ultimate Magazine and if you are interested in promoting your own business in any of the forthcoming magazines please contact the salesperson covering your area or email info@ultimatealmeria.com for further information. HANDY TIPS The good people of the internet are always using many products for applications other than those indicated and WD-40 is no exception however, always follow the guidelines on the can*. 1. Quickly remove crayon from walls: WD-40 makes a great cleaning product. If you have kids you’ll love WD-40’s ability to quickly remove crayon scrawl from walls, table surfaces and TV screen. Spray the WD-40 onto a sponge or flannel and wipe off the crayon. 2. Remove tea stains from a kitchen counter: You can quickly scrub away tea stains from a kitchen counter by spraying WD-40 on a sponge and using it to wipe away tea stains. 3. Shine the leaves of plastic plants: If you have plastic plants in the office then you can make the leaves look shiny and healthy by spraying WD40 on to them. Please check they are plastic first, and don’t spray WD-40 onto real plants. 4. Remove blue ink from stained jeans: We’ve all had a ballpoint pen leak in a pocket. Spray it on to the stain, wait a few minutes and then rinse the clothes. 5. Clean dog dirt from trainers: Yuck! Getting dog dirt on a brand new pair of trainers is a disaster, and cleaning trainers with dog muck on them isn’t much fun. But the WD-40’s “water displacement” function makes the dirt just slide off. spray your trainers with WD-40 and give it a few minutes before starting to clean. 6. Remove adhesive price tags from CD/DVD cases: If you have a plastic case, such as a CD or DVD with a price sticker stuck to it; WD-40 can be used to help remove it. Spray a little on, and wait, then rub off the sticker. 7. Clean off chewing gum: WD-40 is fantastic if you have chewing gum stuck to your shoes, or walked into your carpet, or even your hair. Spray a little WD-40 on the gum, wait a few moments, and then pull the gum off. 8. Clean your hairbrush: WD-40 unclogged matted hair from hair brushes. Spray a little WD-40 onto the hairbrush, wait for it to sink into the hair and pull the hair free. 9. Remove toothpaste stains: Toothpaste stains in the bathroom can be a pain to get rid off, but WD-40 shifts them quick spot. 10. Remove candle-wax or glue from carpet: If you have candle wax, or glue, on your carpet then you can remove it with WD-40. Spray a little WD-40 onto the wax and leave it to dry, and then rub it out with a sponge. 11. Clean dead insects from car: During the mid summer you can get plenty of bugs and insects covered from your car window. Spraying WD-40 onto your car can help quickly remove the stuck bugs. 12. Stop wasps from nesting: Spraying WD-40 can repel a lot of insects and bugs, and because it’s waterproof it tends to stick around. If you have trouble with wasps nesting under your roof, then spraying that area with WD-40 once a year can keep them away. 13. Clean bathroom tiles: If you’ve got mascara, nail polish or paint on a bathroom tile you can use WD-40 to remove it. 23. Remove oil spot from driveway: Leaky car? Use WD-40 to remove the oil spots from your driveway. 14. Keep spiders out of your shed: You can also use WD-40 to keep spiders away from a garden shed. But it’s not recommended for indoor use because of the fumes, especially if you have small children. 15. Remove stuck rings from fingers: You can use WD-40 to remove stuck rings on your finger. Just give it a quick spray with WD-40 and pull the ring off. Wash your hands straight away afterwards. 16. Remove glue from hands: You can also use WD-40 to quickly remove glue from your fingers. Wash your hands afterwards. 17. Loosen stuck zippers: WD-40 is great for loosening stuck zippers on clothes (but be careful to spray the zip and not the clothing). 18. Remove old duct tape: You can remove old duct tape by spraying it with WD-40. 19. Clean off car sticker residue: Spray WD-40 onto stickers placed onto your car to remove the sticker residue. This is great if you have sticker residue on your car window. 20. Cocaine use preventer: Bars in Bristol were advised by police to spray WD-40 onto the rears of toilet seats to prevent people from using the seat lids to snort cocaine. The WD-40 turns the drug to mush. *Ultimate Almeria Magazine can not be held responsible for inproper use of products that causes damage or injury.

After 20 years in successful business in Mojacar, we have decided the time is right to retire and take a well earned rest, to enable us to travel a bit and see more of the grandchildren. The office closed officially on 31st December 2014, but we are still around for anyone who has any queries. We would like to thank all past and present clients for their confidence, support and friendship over the years, and everyone for their good wishes on our retirement.

Garden Plants for a Mediterranean Climate Graham Payne
Your Garden in Spain Clodagh and Dick Handscombe
The Mediterranean Gardner Hugo Latymer
Graham Payne has set out the ground rules for Mediterranean gardeners clearly and comprehensively. Here is the vast range of plants to consider growing, what they offer and what they demand. This is an eminently practical book.” - Hugh Johnson.
Active gardeners in their adopted country, Clodagh and Dick Handscombe bring 40 years’ combined experience of gardening in Spain to this comprehensive and beautifully illustrated guide for residents and holiday-home owners.
Hugo Latymer reveals the rich diversity of trees, shrubs, flowering plants and cacti that flourish in regions where summers are hot and dry, winters mild and wet.
This title covers: how to create a garden that is colourful, interesting and productive - and in tune with your Spanish lifestyle; ideas for apartments, townhouses, villas, fincas, and more; coping with climate extremes, poor soils, pests, and more; advice on selecting and managing gardeners; colour illustrated descriptions of some 400 plants with their English, Spanish and botanical names; plus a gardener’s vocabulary and index.
His knowledge and enthusiasm are communicated in descriptions of more than 300 plants, most of them readily obtainable: Chinaberry trees with fragrant lilac flowers in spring, dark green twisted carobs, beautiful red-flowered climbing lilies. Many of the subjects are illustrated in superb colour photographs. Coded information at the head of each entry enables gardeners to make the best choices when confronted with the bewildering array of plants on offer.

ACCESSORIES • CHILDREN’S BIKES • SAFETY EQUIPMENT Congratulations to Matthew of Weekend Sport... The XXXII edition of “Turkey in Aguilas”, a single time trial event held every year where the winner receives the “turkey” and also 100 euros if they beat the record set in recent events, was played out one rainy morning recently. Last year’s winner, Matthew Shatford, repeated his success as winner this year but could not beat the time he left last year because the rain made an appearance and the road surface was not in the best condition. He lifted the turkey with a time of 3:44 and in second and third place came Francisco “Sojo” and Damian Muñoz respectively.

SPANISH WATER DOGS The Spanish Water Dog is from the poodle family and a breed of dog that was developed by shepherds in Spain as a multi-purpose herder. It was also used sometimes as a gun-dog, as well as an assistant to fishermen. There are many different theories as to its origin and history. Records suggest water dogs have been around the main wetlands of the Iberian Peninsula since ancient times. Portuguese and Spanish water dogs are clearly related and have a common ancestor. They also known by many other names such as, “Perro Turco”, “Laneto”, “Perro Patero”, “Perro Rizado”, “Churro”, “Barbeta” and most recently “Perro de Agua Español They are a medium size, athletic, robust dog that is slightly longer than tall. Their tails are usually docked in the US, but undocked tails are not a fault in conformation showing if the dog was bred in a non-docking country. The head should be strong and carried with elegance. The skull is flat and the top is parallel with the top of the muzzle. The nose, eye-rims and paw pads are the same colour as the darkest part of the coat or darker. The eyes are expressive and set fairly wide apart. They should be hazel, chestnut or dark brown in colour, depending on the coat colour. The ears are set at medium height on the skull, and are triangular. It has a distinctive curly coat which is woolly in texture and may form cords when long. The coat should not be clipped or groomed for aesthetic purposes. Instead, it should look entirely natural, as though it is not groomed at all. It should never be trimmed, but sheared down at least once a year. The puppies are always born with curly hair. The dogs can be seen in a variety of colours. It may be solid black, beige, brown, or white; bi-colour where the second colour is white; or particoloured. Tricoloured dogs are strictly prohibited by the currently held (worldwide) standards for the breed as are black and tan or brown and tan colour combinations.

NEW YEAR’S
Resolutions... A New Year’s resolution is a secular tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person makes a promise to do an act of selfimprovement or something slightly nice, such as opening doors for people beginning from New Year’s Day but it also has religious origins.
The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named and in the Medieval era, the knights took the “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions. There are other religious parallels to this tradition. During Judaism’s New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one’s wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People may act similarly during the Catholic fasting period of Lent, though the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility, in fact the practice of New Year’s resolutions partially came from the Lenten sacrifices. The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually. Success rate: A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study’s participants were confident of success at the beginning. Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying “lose weight”), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends. Quoting Frank Ra (author of the new year’s resolution book “A course in happiness”): “Resolutions are more sustainable when shared, both in terms of with whom you share the benefits of your resolution, and with whom you share the path of maintaining your resolution. Peer-support makes a difference in success rate with new year’s resolutions”. It is also noted that talking with a counsellor about setting goals and new year resolutions can help you keep those resolutions. So whether you’re planning on losing weight, giving up smoking & generally getting fitter, as most do or improving your spiritual self & mental well-being by changing your ways, giving more to charity, becoming more selfless or seeing more of the big, wide world that is out there, we hope you have every success.

Are you considering quitting smoking as a New Year’s resolution? E-cigarettes offer a simple method to reduce your intake. As the market for electronic cigarettes expands to include atomisers and vape products there are many new options available. With a range of nicotine concentration and flavours, e-liquid atomisers offer a healthy alternative to cigarettes. Made from pharmaceutical grade nicotine and natural extracts these liquids can satisfy your cravings without smoke intake or the harmful additives of cigarettes. Furthermore, cigarette smoke is unappealing and frequently illegal in a public environment. Vapour methods on the other hand have been proven to reduce secondary effects and are significantly low on smoke, fumes or other notable odours. E-cigarettes have evolved significantly since their conception almost a decade ago. Second generation e-cigarettes are
made up of an atomizer and a power battery. Atomizers, also known as claromizers, have refillable cartridges and come in a variety of sizes. Batteries are typically USB rechargeable and in some cases the power is adjustable to increase vape potency. Despite polemic about e-cigarettes regulation, brands from USA, UK and France contain pharmaceutical grade ingredients that have been approved by the European Commission. It is important to choose quality products to ensure the best vaping experience. Brands like Halo, Liquideo and Halcyon Vapors are now available here in Spain through select purveyors.
e-cigarettes compared with cold turkey methods, nicotine patches or gum. The research funded by Cancer Research UK suggests that e-cigarettes could improve public health thanks to their widespread appeal and the gains associated with stopping smoking.
People trying to quit smoking have been proven more successful with the aid of e-cigarettes. According to a recent study carried by Prof. Robert West and colleagues of the University College of London, those attempting to quit smoking were over twice as likely to succeed using

NUTS
All nuts are about equal in terms of calories per ounce, and in moderation, are all healthy additions to any diet. “Their mix of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber will help you feel full and suppress your appetite, says Judy Caplan, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 26
E
Best for Dieting
Worst for Dieting
ALMONDS, CASHEWS & PISTACHIOS The lowest-calorie nuts at 160 per ounce are almonds (23 nuts; 6 grams protein, 14 grams fat); cashews (16 to 18 nuts; 5 grams protein, 13 grams fat); and pistachios (49 nuts; 6 grams protein, 13 grams fat). Avoid nuts packaged or roasted in oil; instead, eat them raw or dry roasted, says Caplan. (Roasted nuts may have been heated in hydrogenated or omega-6 unhealthy fats, she adds, or to high temperatures that can destroy their nutrients.)
MACADAMIA & PECANS Ounce for ounce, macadamia nuts (10 to 12 nuts; 2 grams protein, 21 grams fat) and pecans (18 to 20 halves; 3 grams protein, 20 grams fat) have the most calories—200 each—along with the lowest amounts of protein and the highest amounts of fats. However, they’re still good nuts: The difference between these and the lowest calorie nuts is only 40 calories an ounce. As long as you’re practicing proper portion control and not downing handfuls at a time, says Caplan, any kind of raw, plain nut will give you a good dose of healthy fats and nutrients
Good for your Heart WALNUTS While all nuts contain heart-healthy omega-3 fats, walnuts (14 halves contain 185 calories, 18 grams fat, 4 grams protein) have high amounts of alpha linoleic acid (ALA). Research has suggested that ALA may help heart arrhythmias, and a 2006 Spanish study suggested that walnuts were as effective as olive oil at reducing inflammation and oxidation in the arteries after eating a fatty meal. The authors of this study, funded in part by the California Walnut Commission, recommended eating around eight walnuts a day to achieve similar benefits.
Disease prevention ALMONDS Relatively low in calories, almonds have more calcium than any other nut, making them a great food for overall health. Plus, they are rich in fiber and vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps fight dangerous inflammation and possibly health conditions such as lung cancer and age-related cognitive decline. Because they’re so versatile, almonds are often a favorite among nut eaters: You can buy them raw, toasted, slivered, or coated with a variety of fun flavors, from Wasabi & Soy Sauce to Lime ‘n Chili.
Best for your Brain PEANUTS Technically legumes but generally referred to as nuts, peanuts are high in folate—a mineral essential for brain development that may protect against cognitive decline. (It also makes peanuts a great choice for vegetarians, who can come up short on folate, and pregnant women, who need folate to protect their unborn babies from birth defects, says Caplan.) Like most other nuts, peanuts are also full of brain-boosting healthy fats and vitamin E, as well. One ounce of peanuts (about 28 unshelled nuts) contains about 170 calories, 7 grams protein, and 14 grams fat.
Best nuts for men BRAZIL & PECAN Creamy Brazil nuts are packed with selenium, a mineral that may protect against prostate cancer and other diseases. Just one nut contains more than a day’s worth, so eat these sparingly: Recent research has hinted that too much selenium may be linked to type 2 diabetes risk. One ounce of Brazil nuts (6 nuts) contains about 190 calories, 19 grams fat, and 4 grams protein. Pecans are also good for men’s health: They’re loaded with beta-sitosterol, a plant steroid that may help relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. One ounce of pecans (18 to 20 halves) contains about 200 calories, 21 grams fat, and 3 grams protein.

Valentine’s Day In past editions we have championed some of the most romantic and ideal gifts to give your loved one for Valentine’s day and we have also showed you some of the worst possible ideas when it comes to present giving...this time around we have looked at how others around the globe like to celebrate this special day with thier own traditions. JAPAN: In this part of the World, it’s all about spoiling your man on Valentine’s day and not the other way around like in most Western cultures. Japanese women are usually said to be reserved and shy when it comes to expressing their affections with lovey-dovey gestures. However, on this day, the women are in the forefront presenting the men (and sometimes even female friends) in their lives gifts (mostly chocolates), to express either their love, courtesy or social obligation. SOUTH KOREA: Adapted from the Japanese tradition of Valentine’s Day, women in South Korea too, spoil their men with chocolates on this day. In return, they receive gifts on ‘White Day’ from men in a similar fashion as in Japan. However, it doesn’t end there. They have taken the Valentine’s traditions a step further and introduced what they call “Black Day”. On the April 14th, a month after
34
‘White Day’ the single people who didn’t receive any lovin’ (chocolates or gifts) on Valentine’s Day or White Day for that matter, have started an informal tradition of meeting up at restaurants to eat ‘jajangmyeon’, a dish made up of white Korean noodles with a black bean sauce, referred to as black noodles. Some say this tradition of eating black noodles with other single friends is a celebration of the single life, while some see it as is more of a consolation dinner or mourning of being single. That said, South Koreans are a romantic bunch and have practically marked the 14th of every month to signify some sort of ‘Love’ related day. January 14, kicks off with Candle Day; February 14- Valentine’s Day; March 14- White Day; April 14- Black Day; May 14- Rose Day; June 14- Kiss Day; July 14- Silver Day; August 14- Green Day; September 14- Music Day; October 14- Wine Day; November 14- Movie Day; December 14- Hug Day. TAIWAN: In Taiwan, the Japanese/South Korean tradition of Valentine’s Day and White Day is reversed in the sense that, men gift women chocolates and gifts on Valentine’s Day whereas the women reciprocate and return the favor by gifting men chocolates on White Day. Denmark & Norway: Largely imported from the west ‘Valentinsdag’ as it is known or
Valentine’s Day was not very widely celebrated here until more recently. However, they have still managed to come up with their very own quirky little tradition, that locals have embraced and made popular on this day. “Gaekkebrev” are funny little poems or rhyming love notes that men send to women anonymously on Valentine’s Day, giving them only a clue as to the number of letters in the senders name, represented by a dot for each letter. The recipient must then guess who sent her the card. If she guesses correctly she wins an Easter Egg on Easter later that year and if she’s stumped as to who her secret admirer was, she owes him an egg instead which is collected on Easter. Slovenia: The 14th of February in Slovenia, marks the first working in the fields. St Valentine or ‘Zdravko’ as he’s better known there, is one of their patron saints of spring. There’s a Slovene proverb that goes “St Valentine brings the keys of roots”. As such, it’s an auspicious day to start working in vineyards and fields as usually around this time of year one starts noticing the revival of plants and flowers. The people of Slovenia also have a belief that the birds of the fields propose to their loved ones and get married on this day (simply put, it’s the mating season for some birds), and to witness this one must walk barefoot through the field on
around the world. sometimes still frozen ground. So, while this day is significant in the agricultural community in Slovenia, it isn’t until March 12, on Saint Gregory’s Day, that the majority of people celebrate their annual day of love. They also consider February 22 (Saint Vincent’s Day) and 13 June (the patron of love Saint Anthony’s Day) days to celebrate love. Finland & Estonia: Here Valentine’s Day is more a celebration of friendship rather than a romantic love fest. February 14th is called “Ystävän Päivä” in Finnish and Sõbrapäev in Estonian, which literally translates to “Friend’s Day”. People exchange cards & gifts among friends with the greeting of “Happy Friends Day”. It is however, a popular day to tie the knot or get engaged. France: Dubbed one of the most romantic countries in the world, it comes as no surprise that France too houses a strange Valentine’s Day tradition. Their most popular tradition was called “une loterie d’amour” that translates to “drawing for love”. This practice involved single men and women of all ages to enter houses that faced opposite each other and take turns calling out to one another until they were paired off. If the men didn’t like their match, they would simply leave the woman for another man to call. As part of the tradition, the women that
didn’t get matched up, got together for a big ceremonial bonfire in which they tossed pictures & objects of the men who rejected them, whilst swearing and hurling curses at the opposite sex. This tradition truly exemplified the phrase “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!”, so much so, that French government officially banned the practice all together because of how rowdy and uncontrollable the whole event usually got. England: In the 1700’s, on the eve of Valentine’s day single women in England used to place/pin five bay leaves, one at each corner of their pillows and one in the center, with the belief that it would bring them dreams of their future husbands. Another variation of this tradition was to sprinkle bay leaves with rosewater and lay them across their pillows saying “Good Valentine, be kind to me, In dreams let me my true love see”. Now mostly considered folklore, this tradition is not widely practiced anymore but can still be seen once in a while. Norfolk, England: Along with traditional Valentine’s Day customs of cards and flowers and romance, the people of Norfolk in the East of England, have a Santa Clause of sorts that goes by the name ‘Jack Valentine’ and sometimes known as Old Father Valentine or even Old Mother Valentine.. This lovable but mysterious
character is said to knock at little children’s doors on Valentine’s Eve and sneakily leaves them little treats and small presents. Although it isn’t quite known when or how this tradition got started, it’s still quite popular for generations of parents to continue what their parents had once done for them. Spain’s Second Valentine’s Day The Spanish actually have two days when lovers can exchange gifts, at least in Barcelona. La Dia de Sant Jordi (St George’s Day) is Catalonia’s national day (you thought that was England’s saint’s day? The two regions share him!), celebrated on April 23 each year. Gallant gentlemen in Spain honour St George’s romantic gesture of saving a princess from the clutches of an evil dragon by, erm, buying his loved one a book. In reality, this tradition probably derives from the fact that William Shakespeare died on this day in 1616 (and Spain’s greatest authory, Cervantes, a day earlier). However you like to celebrate, make your loved one feel extra special this valentine’s day and try to think of something extraordinary. A romantic meal is great, and many restaurants in the area will be taking bookings now but don’t just leave it at that. Enjoy.

Philomena is a 2013 drama film directed by Stephen Frears, based on the book “The Lost Child of Philomena Lee” by journalist Martin Sixsmith. Starring Dame Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, it tells the true story of Philomena Lee’s 50-yearlong search for her forcibly adopted son, and Sixsmith’s efforts to help her find him. The film was co-produced in the United States and the United Kingdom. THE PLOT London journalist Martin Sixsmith has lost his job as a Labour government adviser, and is contemplating writing a book on Russian history. He is approached at a party by the daughter of Philomena Lee. She suggests that he write a story about her mother, who was forced to give up her toddler son Anthony nearly fifty years ago. Although he initially opposes the idea of writing a human interest story, he eventually meets with Philomena and decides to investigate further. After having sex with a young man at a fair in 1951, Philomena became pregnant and was sent by her father to Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea in Ireland. After giving birth, she was forced to work in the convent laundry, seven days a week, for four years to pay off the cost of her stay. One day she discovered that the nuns had given her son to a couple for adoption, without warning or a chance for Philomena to say goodbye. Philomena kept her lost son a secret from her family for nearly fifty years, but she visited the convent periodically to try to find him. The nuns repeatedly told her that they were unable to help her. Martin and Philomena begin their search at the convent. The nuns are once again polite but unhelpful, and claim that the adoption records were lost in a fire years earlier, although they later present her with a contract she was forced to sign, forbidding her from contacting her son again, which Martin considers to be too convenient to be coincidence. Later at a pub, the locals tell Martin that the convent deliberately destroyed the records in a bonfire, and that most of the children were sold for £1,000 each to rich Americans.
Martin’s enquiries reach a dead end in Ireland, but he receives a promising lead from the United States and he invites Philomena to accompany him there. His contacts help him discover that Anthony was adopted by Doc and Marge Hess, who had renamed him Michael. He grew up to be a lawyer and senior official in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations, prompting Martin to realise that he had met Michael several years earlier while working in the US. They also learn that he has been dead for eight years. Although distraught, Philomena decides that she wants to meet people who knew Michael. They visit a former colleague of Michael’s and discover that Michael was gay and died of AIDS. They also visit his sister Mary, who was adopted at the same time from the convent, and learn about his lover Pete Olssen. After repeatedly avoiding Martin’s attempts to contact him, Pete agrees to talk to Philomena. He shows Philomena some videos of his life with Michael. 50
To Martin and Philomena’s surprise, they see footage of Michael, dated shortly before he died, at the convent in Ireland, and Pete explains that, although he never told his family, Michael had privately wondered about his birth mother all his life, and had travelled to Ireland in his final months to try and find her. Pete informs them that the nuns had told Michael that his mother had abandoned him and that they had lost contact with her. He also reveals that, against his parents’ wishes, he’d had Michael buried in the convent’s cemetery. Philomena and Martin go to the convent where, against Philomena’s pleas, Martin angrily storms into the private quarters and confronts an elderly nun, Sister Hildegarde McNulty, who worked at the convent when Anthony was forcibly adopted. He accuses her of lying to a dying man about something that was so important to both him and his mother.
Hildegarde is unrepentant, saying that losing her son was Philomena’s penance. Martin demands an apology from Hildegarde, telling her that what she did was un-Christian, but is astonished when Philomena instead chooses to forgive her. Philomena then asks to see her son’s grave, where Martin tells her he has chosen not to publish the story. Philomena tells him to publish it anyway. Rating: PG-13 Genre: Drama Directed By: Stephen Frears Written By: Jeff Pope , Steve Coogan On DVD: Apr 15, 2014 Runtime: 1 hr. 38 min.

He is sometimes known, especially in his native Scotland, by the nickname “The Big Yin” (“The Big One”) His first trade, in the early 1960s, was as a welder (specifically a boilermaker) in the Glasgow shipyards, but he gave it up towards the end of the decade to pursue a career as a folk singer in The Humblebums and subsequently as a soloist. In the early 1970s, he made the transition from folk-singer with a comedic persona to full-fledged comedian. A new you!
Almond House Oasis
Did you leap into the new year or like most of us was it more of a lethargic lumbering?
Over indulgence over the festive period, a few pounds gained with too many mince pies, rushing around with family visits and no time for the gym... Top of ‘Time Magazine’s most popular new year’s resolution that people make (and invariably break) is to lose weight and get fit.
Right on the doorstep, set in the almond groves outside Huercal Overa is the aptly named ‘Almond House Oasis’. Hosts Jules and Paul open their beautiful home to fitness groups and individuals for day-long fitness courses or longer breaks.
Further south, near the town of Ronda, ‘Andalucian Cycling experience’ offers a range of cycling activity holidays, whether road-biking or mountain-biking is your thing, this well established company has something to suit all abilities.
Cold January mornings and dark evenings create no incentive to go out for a jog and the gym is full of like-minded people fumbling their way round the machines for a couple of weeks, only to give up when they don’t see an instant result.
The outdoor activity area lends itself to circuit training, outdoor pilates or yoga and the area surrounding the property is perfect for long hikes through the beautiful countryside. Indoors is a studio, fully equipped with a range of equipment for activities including TRX, boxing and aerobics.
Located on the route of the ‘Vuelta de España and ‘Vuelta de Europa’ races, the terrain is perfect for all types of cycling. Accommodation is in self catering townhouses and villas or a farmhouse hotel and prices start from 450 euros per week.
Why not combine getting into shape and shedding those Christmas pounds, with an enjoyable break and book yourself an activity holiday. Whether it’s an army style boot camp or a more gentle yoga retreat, Spain has a varied selection of locations offering short breaks dedicated to fitness. Meet new friends, explore a new location and get fit at the same time.

Prices for short breaks including accommodation and meals start at 430 euros.
Accommodation throughout the tour is in three-star hotels and prices start at 800 euros for a one week break.
www.yogaholidayparadiso.com Boot camp may conjure up images of army style training and accommodation in cold damp tents or huts. ‘Trimmer You’ boot camp near Marbella is far from a wet muddy field as you can get. Luxurious accommodation with jacuzzi baths and food prepared by top chefs is what you can expect on the weeklong or mid-week breaks. According to the online mission statement you can expect to lose around seven pounds and learn about healthy nutrition. The wide range of activities includes boxercise, core training, hiking, aqua aerobics and beach games. Prices from 600 euros. www.trimmeryoubootcamp.co.uk Horse riding is a great way to tone up and get fit. The village of Coin is home to ‘Horse Riding Spain’. Ride Spanish horses through the breathtaking and varied Andalucian countryside. Stay in a self-catering apartment on the vast ranch and wake up to horses roaming freely in the grounds.
www.walksinspain.com If you want to combine getting fit with learning a new skill then consider a sailing course, ‘Rock Sailing’ organises beginners and advanced sailing courses from its base in Gibraltar. A week long course includes theory lessons in a classroom followed by hands-on tuition taking a yacht out onto open waters for the final few days. Accommodation and most food is provided along with hire of necessary equipment and you will earn your RYA certificate for the course. Prices start at 1,050 euros. www.sailinggibraltar.co.uk Most of the above holidays and tours can be adapted to suit your fitness level and ability, food on the fitness holidays is specially prepared to be tasty yet healthy and as well as getting fit you will come away with nutritional knowledge and a motivation which should help you continue on your path to fitness, at least until next Christmas! In 1930, Bobby Jones became the only player in modern golf to complete a grand slam. Several other players have come close, but none have been able to seal the deal. Given the skill of today’s players, it is very unlikely that anyone will follow in Jones’ footsteps anytime soon. 61
THE RIGHT CLUBS ...continued
You can check the lie angle for each of your clubs yourself. This is called Dynamic Lie Fitting. Stick a piece of masking tape on the sole of your favorite iron and hit some balls off of the mat at your local driving range. Ensure that the sole of the club makes contact with the mat on each shot. After each shot check the masking tape on the sole of the club to see where the scuff mark is located. If the scuff mark is in the middle then the lie of the club is correct for you. If the scuff mark is towards the heel of the club then you need the club adjusting to a flatter lie. If the scuff mark is towards the toe of the club then you need the club adjusting to a more upright lie. For each ¼” the scuff mark is from the centre of the sole of the club equals a 1° lie adjustment required. Most clubs can be adjusted for Loft & Lie by +/- 2° to 4°.
Lie Angle The lie angle of iron club heads are a very important feature of all golf clubs and needs to be properly attuned to fit each individual golfer. See Figure 4. If every golfer was approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall then the lie angles of most off the rack clubs would be fine. But we all have different physiques, so the lie angles of our clubs need to be adjusted to ensure on line shots. If the lie angle of your club heads are wrong for your height, size, setup and swing then you will almost certainly hit off target shots. If this is the case, then you need to have the lie angles of your iron clubs checked and if necessary adjusted. By making sure that your clubs actually fit, you can also alter the lie of a The loft and lie of iron clubs can be club by shortening or lengthening a club. adjusted by a competent club maker By shortening an iron by ½ inch can flatten the lie by 1° to 1½°
If the lie angle of your clubs is to upright, then you will tend to pull your shots, you will need to have the clubs adjusted to a flatter lie. If the lie angle of your clubs is to flat, then you will tend to push your shots, you will need to have the clubs adjusted to a more upright lie. And If the lie angle of your clubs are fitted perfectly so that the centre of the sole of the club touches the ground at impact, then your ball should fly straight.

with a Loft and Lie Bending Machine in about an hour at a cost of about €3 - €4 per club. You might have to shop around for a club maker who has a Loft and Lie Bending Machine as they can cost anything up to a €1000 each, so it is an expensive piece of equipment to have sitting around a workshop and only being used a few times a year. Adjustments of between +/- 2° to +/- 4° in any direction can be made on irons, these adjustments are dependent on the material that the club head is manufactured from. Woods cannot be adjusted for loft and lie because the material from which they are manufactured is too rigid to bend. There are however certain makes and models of clubs that are not recommended for loft and lie adjustment. There is also a possibility of a club fracturing during loft and lie adjustment, so be warned. Your local clubmaker should be able to advise you on Loft and Lie adjustments.

our new feature bringing you a host of astonishing facts and figures from around the globe.
Dangerous sports...
...and pastimes. There are a few very surprising entries to this editions “Worlds Most” and a few that you’d expect to see.
Pamplona Bull Running
Essentially, the only qualifications to run with the bulls in Pamplona, an event that looks and sounds like a terrible zoo break-out nightmare, are to: 1) Be 18 years old 2) Not be drunk and 3) Run away from the bulls, not toward them. There are hundreds of injuries sustained each year, and since record-keeping began in 1910, 15 runners have been killed, the most recent coming in 2009.
Chearleading
According to the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research, cheerleading combined for more than half of the 104 catastrophic injuries sustained by female high school and college athletes from 1982 to 2005. And according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there have been 26,000 cheerleading injuries in the U.S. annually since 2007. There’s nothing funny about a scary cheerleading fall, and those who say it’s not a sport should think again!
Equestrian
According to a neurosurgeon from Vanderbilt University, equestrian sports account for more traumatic brain injuries than any other recreational sport, including approximately 60 deaths per year. Furthermore, according to a presentation at a 2011 helmet safety symposium, a motorcyclist averages one serious accident for every 5,000 hours of riding, whereas an equestrian averages one for every 350 hours of riding.
Rugby
Anyone who has ever caught a glimpse of a rugby match can attest to the physicality with which the game is played, and some of the numbers regarding injuries in the sport are downright scary. According to The Telegraph, there are 110 rugby players in Britain alone who have been paralyzed in the course of a game, and a 1996 study into rugby-related injuries by the Department of Psychology at Rhodes University, South Africa found that 20 percent of all rugby injuries result in concussions.
Surfing
There are so many things to be wary of when surfing that it’s hard to leave it off the list of the world’s most dangerous. You can break bones, you can get caught in a rip tide, you can be taken out by other riders, you can be taken out by your own board, you can drown, you can be attacked by marine life, and you can even drown and then be attacked by marine life. Then there are even more dangerous variations of the sport, like big wave surfing and glacier wave surfing. There’s nothing less forgiving than an angry ocean.
64
the world’s
MOST...
Heli-Skiing
A good rule of thumb should probably be that if you have to use a helicopter to access a portion of a mountain to ski on, you probably shouldn’t be skiing there. This rule, however, seems lost on heliskiiers, who risk life and limb to hit the most pristine slopes the globe has to offer. Not only is heli-skiing exorbitantly expensive, but it’s also tremendously dangerous, given the elevated risk for causing an avalanche at the altitudes these athletes ski.
Free Solo Climbing
Climbing up the face of a rock is dangerous enough with all of the safety equipment in the world attached to you. But some daredevils like to take the activity a step further and do it totally free of any harnesses, ropes and other gear created to keep people from falling out of the sky. They are called free solo climbers. Certainly there’s a thrill and a freedom in free soloing, as it’s called, but it’s a deadly practice that is probably better left not attempted.
BASE Jumping
The letters in the acronym BASE jumping stand for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth — and these are the surfaces these death-defying human beings prefer to leap off of in the name of adrenaline. It’s because BASE jumpers dive from the objects that they do that their sport is so much more dangerous than traditional skydiving. Even though a parachute is still employed, BASE jumpers run the increased risk of injury or death due to an increased proximity to cliffs, buildings and the like as they fall, and their time before impact is dramatically decreased from a traditional skydiving jump. Then there are folks like Jeb Corliss who take BASE jumping to an even more death-defying level. Corliss specializes in wingsuit jumping, a form of BASE jumping that is done without a parachute!
Cave Diving
Being submerged in the water with only an oxygen tank keeping you alive is a scary proposition, but cave divers like to take the risk a step further by doing it in the dark, and often with no escape route in the event that a need to exit the water arises. In addition to facing the risks that come with other types of deep diving, cave divers have no straight line to the surface should their oxygen fail, and there’s often not enough time to find fresh air when this happens. Even the most experienced divers have succumbed to the sport, including David Shaw, who tragically filmed his own death while cave diving in 2005. And if that’s not enough to scare anyone away, I’m not sure what is.
Motorcycling is the most dangerous motorsport in the world. Just one example is The Isle of Man TT event, which has a rich 100year history. But during that time, there have been over 220 deaths. The drivers in the race are required to maintain their balance while driving through all types of obstacles such as rocks and trees, and even bugs on their windscreens. This is all done while traveling at an extremely high rate of speed. 65
