A very Spanish Christmas In Spain, the Christmas holiday season is full of the usual Christmas festivities, but there is one tradition, not at all common elsewhere. Named “Hogueras” (bonfires), this tradition originated long before Christmas itself. It is the observance of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. It is characterized by people jumping over fires as a symbolic protection against illness. This firejumping can be seen primarily in Granada and Jaen. The more common traditions include incredibly elaborate “Nacimiento” (nativity scenes), Christmas trees, and remarkable Christmas markets scattered among villages and cities with piles of fruits, flowers, marzipan and other sweets, candles, decorations and hand-made Christmas gifts. Often, as the Christmas Eve stars appear in the heavens, tiny oil lamps are lit, warming village windows. The crowds at the Christmas market thin as shoppers return to prepare for

the coming meal. The Christmas Eve gaiety is interrupted at midnight be the ringing of bells calling the families to “La Misa Del Gallo” (The Mass of the Rooster). The most beautiful of these candlelight services is held at the monastery of Montserrat, high in the mountain near Barcelona, which is highlighted by a boy’s choir describes as performing the Mass in “one pure voice.” Christmas dinner is never eaten until after midnight. It is a family feast, and often highlighted with “Pavo Trufado de Navidad” (Christmas turkey with truffles. After the meal, family members gather around the Christmas tree and sing Christmas carols and hymns of Christendom. The rejoicing continues through the wee hours of the morning. An old Spanish verse says... “Esta noche es Noche-Buena, Y no es noche de dormir” (This is the goodnight, therefore it is not meant for sleep.) Christmas Day is spent at church, at feasts and in more merry-making.

A custom peculiar to Spain is that of “swinging.” Swings are set up throughout the courtyards and young people swing to the accompaniment of songs and laughter. It is not Santa who comes to Spain bearing gifts, but the Three Wise Men. The Spanish Christmas continues for a few weeks after Dec. 25th. On the Eve of Epiphany, January 5th, children place their shoes on the doorstep, and in the secret of the night, the Three Wise Men pass leaving gifts. January 6th, Epiphany is heralded with parades in various cities where candy and cakes are distributed to throngs of children. The three Wise men are seen everywhere in Spain at Christmas, visiting hospitals, orphanages, etc. The men who dress up in various “Wise men” garments are from all walks of life. The legend tells of the three Wise men traveling through the country on their way to Bethlehem. Spanish children have a great fondness for the three Wise men, especially Balthazar.

shelf These Top 3 classic Christmas books have been read to young and old for many years at Christmas...

A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens

How The Grinch Stole Christmas Dr. Seuss

Twas The Night Before Christmas Clement Moore

A Christmas Carol is a Victorian morality tale of an old and bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who undergoes a profound experience of redemption over the course of one evening.

The Grinch, whose heart is two sizes too small, hates Who-ville’s holiday celebrations, and plans to steal all the presents to prevent Christmas from coming. To his amazement, Christmas comes anyway, and the Grinch discovers the true meaning of the holiday.

The poem, ‘A Visit From St. Nickolas’ (also known as ‘The Night Before Christmas’, and ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ (from its first line), first published in 1823, is largely responsible for the contemporary American conception of Santa Claus, including his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his mode of transportation, the number and first-ever printing of the names of his reindeer, and his delivery of toys to children.

Mr Scrooge is a financier/moneychanger, who has devoted his life to the accumulation of wealth. He holds anything other than money in contempt, including friendship, love and the Christmas season. In keeping with the musical analogy of the title, A Christmas Carol, Dickens divides his literary work into five “staves” instead of chapters. This is a little joke Dickens has carried out throughout the story, it adds humour to the story and links in, because a stave is something you will find in a piece of music, and a “carol” is a type of music/song.

Dr. Seuss began work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas around the beginning of 1957. Some writers, including Dr. Seuss himself, have made a connection between the Grinch and Dr. Seuss. In the story, the Grinch laments that he has had to put up with the Whos’ celebration of Christmas for 53 years. As few have noted, Dr. Seuss was 53 when he wrote and published the book.

Festive Facts

Japanese people traditionally eat at KFC for Christmas dinner, thanks to a successful marketing campaign 40 years ago. KFC is so popular that customers must place their Christmas orders 2 months in advance.

Nearly all of the most popular Christmas songs including ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘Chestnuts roasting…’, and ‘I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas’ were written by Jewish people.

We frequently abbreviate Christmas as X-mas because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter “chi” which is an abbreviation for the word “Christ” in Greek.

In 1918 and for the past 40 years, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia has sent the city of Boston a giant Christmas tree as a thank you for their support after the 1917 Halifax explosion.

An artificial Christmas tree would have to be reused for more than 20 years to be “greener” than buying a fresh-cut tree annually The Nazi party tried to turn Christmas into a non-religious holiday celebrating the coming of Hitler, with Saint Nicholas replaced by Odin the “Solstice Man” and swastikas on top of Christmas trees. The US playing card company ‘Bicycle’ had manufactured a playing card in WW2. That, when the card was soaked, it would reveal an escape route for POWs. These cards were Christmas presents for all POWs in Germany. The Nazis were none the wiser! The people of Oslo, Norway donate the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree every year in gratitude to the people of London for their assistance during WWII. During the Christmas of 2010, the Colombian government covered jungle trees with lights. When FARC guerrillas (terrorists) walked by, the trees lit up and banners asking them to lay down their arms became visible. 331 guerrillas re-entered society and the campaign won an award for strategic marketing excellence.

During the Christmas of 1914 (World War 1), a truce was held between Germany and the UK. They decorated their shelters, exchanged gifts across no man’s land and played a game of football between themselves. About half of Sweden’s population watches Donald Duck cartoons every Christmas Eve since 1960. In 1867, a Boston industrialist heard Charles Dickens read A Christmas Carol and was so moved he closed his factory on Christmas Day and gave every one of his employees a turkey. Mormon missionaries can only call home twice a year: once on Mother’s Day and again on Christmas. Telling “scary ghost stories” is an old Christmas Eve tradition that has died out in the past century. 95% of all Americans celebrate Christmas (only 75% of the U.S. is Christian), and just 51% of the holiday’s celebrators consider it a “strongly religious” holiday. A village in Peru settles their grudges by fist fighting on the Christmas day, then go drinking and start the New Year off on a clean slate.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is the only record to get the UK Christmas Singles Chart Number One twice, once in 1975 and again in 1991. During Christmas time in Newfoundland, people called mummers dress up in crude disguises and go from house to house. At each house they visit, they start dancing, playing music, and get wasted drunk while the hosts try to discover their true identities. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December because, some say, of the Roman sun god and not the birth of Jesus. Engineers designing the Voyager Space mission planned it to avoid planetary encounters over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Paul McCartney earns $400,000 a year off his Christmas song “Wonderful Christmas Time”, which is widely regarded as the worst song he ever recorded. All letters addressed to Santa in the United States go to Santa Claus, Indiana. The Germans made the first artificial Christmas trees out of dyed goose feathers. In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ. All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts.

Heading South Every year in early November, from the Northern USA States and Northern Europe, there begins a mass migration of retirees or “Snowbirds” heading for warmer climes, to spend the winter months in the sunshine. Traditionally an American phenomenon, this trend has filtered out to parts of Northern Europe, residents of Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and even the UK to name a but a few, wishing to escape the harsh winters by heading down to Spain and Portugal en mass. The temperate climate of Southern Europe is a great attraction for Northern Europeans, combined with a relatively lower cost of living, easy and relaxed way of life and of course a change of scenery. Our North American cousins, head for the warm Southern States of Florida, Arizona, California and Nevada, many actually declaring permanent residency status to take advantage of the lower taxes in some of these states. Once a pastime of wealthy retirees, “Snowbirds” now come from all walks of life and income brackets, with the increase in popularity of RV’s, Caravans and Motorhomes the option to head South for the winter is accessible for anyone.

In Palm Springs, Southern California, I spoke to Clive and Barbara Steinman from New Jersey “we have been travelling down here every year since we retired in 1998, the winters in the North East seem to get colder and the heating bills higher” explained Clive. “We find the rentals cheap and the cost of living even cheaper! Even our children and grandchildren fly down here to visit us, so we still get to spend time with the family, we feel like we have the best of both worlds!” Here in Spain the campsites of the Southern Costas are filled with Caravans and Motorhomes bearing license plates from all over Europe. Highly organised travellers, they come well equipped to set up their “home from home” with large awnings attached to their ‘vans, kitchen tents, annexes, dog kennels, “astro turf” lawns and satellite dishes! On the Marbella Playa campsite, I chatted to Len and Rita from Liverpool, whose cosy motorhome set up would put many apartments to shame, complete with 1.3m satellite dish, rotary washing line and even a couple of garden gnomes! “We usually set off from the UK in October and enjoy a slow journey down here, stopping off at some lovely locations en route, arriving here in November, ready to get set up for Christmas” enthused Rita. “We have met many people from different parts of Europe who come to the same campsite each year and have made some good friends”. It’s not just Motorhomers and Caravanners who spend the winters down on the Costa’s. With cheap monthly rental rates and a good selection of unoccupied properties to choose from, many apartments and houses are also occupied by “Snowbirds” preferring the luxuries of a “bricks and mortar” winter break. Some even make the move more permanent, deciding to make Spain their main residence by taking advantage of low property prices, then spending the hot summers with family back in the UK. With ever increasing energy bills, colder, wetter winters and more offers of early retirement, I can only expect that the “Snowbird” population will continue to increase and many more nationalities will be making the yearly migration to winter here on the Costa Blanca and other sunny destinations and quite frankly, who can blame them!

immune

boosters

Keep colds at bay during the autumn months ahead with our guide to the top immune-boosting seasonal fruit and veg. 20

E

The value of Venison

Go for garlic

Why it’s good for you:
Autumn is prime time for venison. Venison is lower in fat than a skinned breast of chicken and research suggests it contains double the amount of iron in beef and two-and-a-half times as much as spinach. It is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, making it a must for your autumn menu

Why it’s good for you:
‘The compound allicin, found in garlic, is anti-fungal, antibiotic and possibly anti-viral,’ Judith Wills says. ‘This makes it ideal for use in soups, stews and sauces during autumn when winter bugs are rife. Allicin is at its strongest just after the clove has been crushed - so, for an even stronger health kick, use it raw’ What the experts say.
Nutritionists believe garlic should be used liberally in your food over the coming months - and it’s at its most potent now when in season.

Pumpkin power Why they’re good for you:
The flesh is high in antioxidants and the seeds are rich in healthy monounsaturated fat and omega-6 fatty acids, zinc and potassium. Shell, dry and sprinkle the seeds in salads. What the experts say.
‘The orange-fleshed varieties, such as ‘Crown Prince’, as well as butternut squash, contain high levels of carotenes, as well as good amounts of vitamin C and E,’ says Judith Wills. ‘These antioxidants are thought to help prevent the illnesses associated with old age, such as cancers and heart disease’

Mushroom magic Why they’re good for you:
They contain 12 times more of the powerful antioxidant l-ergothioneine than wheat germ and help boost immunity and protect red blood cells. Mushrooms are also a good source of fibre, selenium (vital for the immune system) and B vitamins and they’re low in calories to boot. What the experts say.
‘A diet rich in B vitamins may help ease depression or lethargy,’ says Judith Wills, author of ‘The Food Bible’

Have an apple a day Why they’re good for you:
Apples are rich in immune-boosting vitamin C - fresh ones much more so than stored, so opt for local varieties (Pink Lady now being grown in Northern Spain) which won’t have travelled far. But don’t just eat apples - drink the juice. Even a small amount of apple juice every day could help lower the chance of developing coronary heart disease, according to research published in the ‘Journal of Medicinal Food’. What the experts say.
‘Basically, the tarter they are, the more vitamin C they’re likely to contain,’ says Dr Joan Morgan, one of the world’s leading apple experts. ‘They’re also a good source of fibre - ancient medicinal recipes make a lot of play on apples being good for the bowels.’ And recent studies suggest that regularly eating apples can reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

and organisations, most Spanish families will buy a portion of a ticket even if they are not regular gamblers. Prizes range between 200 euros and four million euros, give it a try, you never know! The draw is televised and takes a good few hours to get through. Another chance to win your fortune is the El Nino lottery drawn on January 5. Christmas eve in Spain is a real family time, you find very few Spanish owned bars and restaurants open that evening, most will close after lunch and the owners and staff have the rest of the day and night with their close families.

Many Spanish people go to mass, some held at midnight and others earlier in the evening. Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before church. A traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is a seafood or fish starter with a roast meat entree, rounded off by a traditional candy called Turron which is very sweet and can be bought in most supermarkets. Christmas eve is usually referred to as ‘Noche Buena’. Christmas day for the Spanish is a quieter day to take a walk or visit a bar and meet up with friends, don’t be surprised to see endless Spanish families dressed to the ‘nines’ walking along the seafront. Boxing day does not really exist in Spain and December 26 is not a national holiday. This is the day when children will write to the ‘wise men’ or ‘three kings’ to ask for presents they hope to receive on January 6. Take the opportunity to go to a nearby shopping mall and bag some early bargains in the sales. If retail therapy is not your thing, why not ‘get your skates on’. Many larger towns open ‘pop-up’ ice rinks where you can put on your best ‘Torvill and Dean’ ice skates are available for hire. If you are dreaming of a white Christmas, just a few hours’ drive will take you to the ski-resort of ‘Sol y Nieve’ high in the Sierra Nevada, Granada. This purpose built ski resort has more than 100 kilometres of runs with plenty of natural snow from December to April. The highest point is 3.4 kilometres and the views are spectacular. The ski village itself has plenty of hotels and self-catering accommodation and a number of shops, bars and restaurants.

Watch out for ‘Día de los santos inocentes’ on December 28th, it’s similar to Aprils Fools Day and people try to trick each other into believing silly stories and jokes. Newspapers and TV stations also run silly stories. You were warned! New Year’s Eve, or ‘Nochevieja’ or has one special tradition is that you eat 12 grapes with the 12 strokes of the clock at Midnight. Each grape represents a month of the coming year, so if you eat the twelve grapes, you are said to be lucky in the new year. Thankfully, most supermarkets sell cans of 12 ready, skinned and seeded ones to make for easier consumption. Apart from Christmas, another festival celebrated in Spain is Epiphany and is celebrated on January 6, the twelfth night after Christmas. In Spanish, Epiphany is called ‘Fiesta de Los Tres Reyes Magos’. Epiphany celebrates when the kings or wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Children in Spain will open some presents on Christmas Day, but most are opened on Epiphany. Similar to children in the UK, the night before they will leave out treats for the kings and a bowl of water for the camels! Some towns and villages have Epiphany parades where men from the village dress as the kings, each King travels in a float that is shaped like a camel. Sometimes there are also real camels in the parade. The Three Kings in the Spanish Epiphany are, Gaspar, who represents frankincense, Melchior, who represents gold, and Balthazar who is said to have brought Myrrh to the baby Jesus. Find out from your local town hall about the timings of the parade, the children’s excitement can be quite infectious. Everything goes back to normal on January 7 but if you haven’t burst out of your clothes by then, one final festive treat is to try a ‘roscon’ a sweet pastry ring filled with cream or if you are lucky, a special gift but take care not to swallow it! Feliz fiestas!

Ski equipment is available for hire and instruction is available. With the resort’s proximity to the coast you can ski in the morning and be on the beach by midafternoon.

JACK the

In September of this year, a British author claims to have new evidence on the identity of Jack the Ripper - but his suspect is only one of a slew of names linked to the grisly killings which terrorised late 19th century London. DNA evidence from a blood-soaked shawl identifies 23-year-old hairdresser Aaron Kosminski as the notorious murderer, according to author Russell Edwards. The shawl was taken by a policeman at the scene of the murder of the Ripper’s fourth victim, Catherine Eddowes, in September 1888. It has never been washed and was kept safe by descendants of the policeman before being purchased at auction by Edwards in 2007.

Victims:

Jack the Ripper gained infamy with a killing spree in London’s East End in 1888, slashing the throats of female prostitutes in the impoverished Whitechapel district.

Annie Chapman, murdered on 8th September 1888.

According to Edwards’ new book Naming Jack the Ripper, Kosminski, who emigrated with his family from Poland to the East End before the murders, was known to the police as a credible suspect. He was committed to an asylum in 1891 and later died from gangrene. Edwards’s theory is the latest attempt to track down the killer, whose story has spawned numerous books and films and who continues to fascinate to this day.

Aaron Kosminski: Emigrated to England from Poland in the 1880s and worked as a hairdresser in Whitechapel in the East End of London, where the murders were committed in 1888. In 1891, he was put in an insane asylum. Police officials from the time of the murders named one of their suspects as “Kosminski” (the forename was not given), and described him as a Polish Jew in an insane asylum. Almost a century after the final murder, the suspect “Kosminski” was identified as Aaron Kosminski, but there was little if any evidence to connect him with the murders, and the reasons for his inclusion as a suspect by the contemporary police are unclear. Possibly, Kosminski was confused with another Polish Jew of the same age named Aaron or David Cohen (real name possibly Nathan Kaminsky), who was a violent patient at the same asylum. 28

It is generally believed that there were five victims of Jack the Ripper. Mary Nichols, murdered on 31st August 1888.

Elizabeth Stride, murdered on 30th September 1888. Catherine Eddowes, also murdered on 30th September 1888. Mary Kelly, murdered on 9th November 1888.

Other Main “Jack the Ripper” suspects... Seweryn Klosowski, aka George Chapman:

Pole Klosowski was a barber in Whitechapel at the time of the murders. He changed his name to Chapman in the 1890s and was hanged in 1903 for the poisoning deaths of three of his wives. Chapman was reportedly favoured above all suspects by police investigating the Ripper murders, but many experts have discounted him due to his method of killing.

Thomas Hayne Cutbush:

John Pizer, aka Leather Apron:

Pizer, a Polish Jew who worked as a bootmaker in Whitechapel, was arrested on September 10, 1888 following the murders of Mary Ann Nichols and Annie Chapman. Known as Leather Apron, Pizer was believed to have committed a number of assaults on prostitutes. Many locals reportedly suspected him of the killings but he was later cleared because he had alibis for two of the murders. Pizer received a payout from at least one media source that claimed he was the Ripper.

William Henry Bury:

Cutbush was a clinically insane youth who was believed to be wandering the streets of London at the time of the Ripper murders. Delusions saw him sent to Lambeth Infirmary in 1891 where he threatened to rip staff open with a knife. He stabbed a woman in the buttocks and attempted to stab a second before being pronounced insane and committed to Broadmoor Hospital in 1891. He died there in 1903. A series of articles in The Sun newspaper in 1894 suggested Cutbush was a Ripper suspect, but there is no evidence to indicate police ever seriously considered him.

Bury was hanged in Dundee in 1889 for the murder of his former prostitute wife Ellen, whom he strangled to death with a rope. Bury also inflicted several post-mortem wounds on the body with a penknife. An East London resident at the time of the Ripper murders, Bury was highly suspected by the media and his hangman, James Berry. Bury claimed Ellen’s cause of death was suicide and expressed fear to police that he may be arrested as “Jack the Ripper”. He later confessed to strangling Ellen to death in a drunken tiff over money, but denied any connection to the Ripper murders. No substantial evidence was ever found.

Walter Sickert:

Francis Tumblety:

In 2002, best-selling crime novelist Patricia Cornwell thought she might have uncovered Jack the Ripper’s DNA and that it could be a match for the German-born British artist, who liked to paint morbid scenes of violence against women. Sickert was first mentioned as a possible suspect in Donald McCormik’s 1959 book The Identity of Jack the Ripper. Sickert had a fascination with the Ripper murders, reportedly staying in a room once believed to have had Ripper himself as a lodger. However, it is widely believed he was in France at the time of the murders.

Montague John Druitt:

A barrister who worked as an assistant schoolmaster in Blackheath to supplement his income, his decomposing body was found in the River Thames on December 31, 1888. His suicide took place just weeks after the November 9 slaying of Mary Jane Kelly, considered to be Ripper’s last known victim. Authorities considered him a prime suspect in the murders, but further investigation revealed the timing of his death seemed to be merely coincidental.

An Irish-American who posed as an “Indian Herb” doctor in the US and Canada, he was connected to the deaths of one of his patients in Boston but escaped prosecution. Tumblety reportedly despised all women but possessed a particular hatred for prostitutes. He was arrested in England on November 7, 1888 on charges of “gross indecency”, apparently for engaging in homosexuality. Tumblety was mentioned as a Ripper suspect by police because of his extreme misogyny and prior criminal charges.

who posed as a midwife and could be seen with bloody clothes without attracting suspicion. In 2006, Australian scientist Ian Findlay said swabs from letters sent to police purporting to be from the Ripper suggested the killer might be female.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll:

The Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland author was named as a suspect by author Richard Wallace, based upon anagrams he devised for his book Jack The Ripper, Light-Hearted Friend. Ripperologists have never taken the claim seriously.

Thomas Neill Cream:

A doctor who secretly specialised in abortions, he spent time in prison in Illinois for fatally poisoning his mistress’s husband before resuming killing in London upon his release. His reported last words during his hanging at Newgate Prison in 1892 were “I am Jack the...” Most consider it impossible for him to be the culprit as he was imprisoned at the time of the murders.

Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale:

The eldest son of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and the grandson of Queen Victoria. He was second in line to the British throne but never became king, dying before both of them. His sexuality and mental health saw him linked with the Cleveland Street scandal, which involved a homosexual brothel. He has also been named as a Ripper candidate by various authors citing a royal conspiracy theory, but contemporary documents show he was not in London at the time of the murders.

James Thomas Sadler:

Frances Coles, a friend of Sadler’s, died from a throat wound on February 13, 1891. Sadler was arrested but there was not enough evidence for a conviction. He was considered to be a suspect in the Ripper murders, but was later found to have been at sea during the earlier killings.

Mary Pearcey:

An English woman who was executed on December 23, 1890 for the murder of her lover’s wife and child. Her crime is sometimes mentioned in connection with the Ripper killings. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put forward several theories of a female “Jill the Ripper”

Aaron Kosminski:

A contemporary sketch of the new prime suspect. 29

Lawn Bowls:

A Brief History

Bowls or lawn bowls is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a “jack” or “kitty”. It is played on a pitch which may be flat (for “flat-green bowls”) or convex or uneven (for “crown-green bowls”). It is normally played outdoors (although there are many indoor venues) and the outdoor surface is either natural grass or artificial turf.

graphic account of London in his day and, writing of the summer amusements of the young men, explaining that on holidays they were “exercised in leaping, shooting, wrestling, casting of stones [in jactu lapidum], and throwing of javelins fitted with loops for the purpose, which they strive to fling before the mark.” It is commonly supposed that by jactus lapidum, Fitzstephen meant the game of bowls.

THE HISTORY of BOWLS has been traced back certainly to the 13th century, and conjecturally to the 12th. William Fitzstephen (d. about 1190), in his biography of Thomas Becket, gives a

later date, on festive occasions at Nairn, - nevertheless the inference seems unwarranted. The jactus lapidum of which he speaks may have been more akin to shotput. It is beyond dispute, however, that the game, at any rate in a rudimentary form, was played in the 13th century. A manuscript of that period in the royal library, Windsor contains a drawing representing two players aiming at a small cone instead of an earthenware ball or jack. The world’s oldest surviving bowling green is the Southampton Old Bowling Green, which was first used in 1299.

902 NUMBERS NOT ALL 902 numbers are premium rate numbers. Sadly Telefonica has lumped premium rate and premium service into the one 902 range.
Whether the number is premium rate or premium service depends on the fourth number. 902 followed by 1,2,3 or 4 are premium rates costing up to four times the standard rate, and from which the receiving company benefits financially. 902 numbers followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9 are to provide a premium service, from which the receiver gains no financial benefit, but does benefit from a premium service. For example the charity Samaritans in Spain uses the number 902 88 35 35; hence the fourth digit is 8. This means that the number is not connected to any local telephone exchange. What this allows the Samaritans to do is to have several phones in several locations attached to the 902 88 35 35 number. This means that whenever someone calls their number, whether they are calling from Madrid,

Barcelona, Marbella, the Balearics or wherever, they are connected to a listener. And it doesn’t matter where that listener is physically located: all for the same fee! All Samaritans in Spain calls to 902 88 numbers are charged at national call rates. From landlines and public phones the connection charge is 0.08€ plus 0.04€/min: Monday Friday, 8pm – 8am, weekends & public holidays and 0.07€ / min: Monday – Friday, 8am – 8pm. Sadly, calls from mobiles are considerably more. For most providers the connection charge is 0.12€ then 0.22€/min: Monday – Friday, 8pm – 8am weekends & public holidays and 0.36€/min: Monday – Friday, 8am – 8pm. It is so sad when we read that ALL 902 numbers are premium rate numbers when only SOME are. Many, like Samaritans in Spain, are premium service numbers which actually benefit both the caller and the receiver.

Feeling

FUZZY

ld r o w e h t d n u o r a m o fr hangover cures In this festive season, having a few drinks with your friends and family is a great way to celebrate. But excessive alcohol consumption can cause physiological consequences. Don’t worry, a hangover is universal and someone, somewhere, probably already knows a way to cope with it. Whether you find the preferred ritual to be shocking, disgusting, or delightful, here are 19 of the strangest remedies you’ll encounter. 1. Ancient Rome The ancient Romans, fond of massive, orgiastic bacchanals, sometimes woke up with feeling like there was a chariot race going on in their heads. But forget hair of the dog, how about feather of the bird? Pliny the Elder recommended deepfrying a canary and scarfing it down. Debate goes on about whether the bird was beheaded and skinned or eaten whole, but everyone seems to agree that those crunchy bones were some of the best bites. 2. Namibia The morning after a rager, Namibians drink Buffalo Milk. Guess what it doesn’t have in it? Buffalo milk. It’s just clotted cream (from cows), dark rum, spiced rum, cream liqueur, and whole cream. It sounds like drinking a cup is how you’d get a hangover in the first place. In addition to a belly full of booze and dairy, Buffalo Milk adds a sugar crash to the blend of bad feelings. 32

3. Puerto Rico Supposedly, drinkers in Puerto Rico have figured out how to prevent a hangover. Before an evening of indulgence, they rub a slice of lemon (or lime) into the armpit of their drinking arm. You read that right. It supposedly prevents dehydration. A few thoughts on this: A) There’s no way it works. Like, at all. There is zero science behind it. B) Why just your drinking arm? What if you double-fist it? C) This is widely reported as a known remedy, but no Puerto Ricans I contacted while researching this reported actually having done the lemon trick. To call it an urban legend would be generous. Which leads me to: D) This is almost certainly a joke that somebody made up to see if they could trick their idiot friend into rubbing a lemon into his armpit. Maybe the guy smelled bad, and somebody wanted him to freshen up before a night out.

salt in the plum may actually help replenish your depleted electrolytes. But putting something that sour in an already sour stomach? Pass.

4. Japan After too much sake in one of Tokyo’s little nomiya bars, Japanese drinkers eat umeboshi, a pickled, dried ume, which is similar to a plum or apricot. It’s not just a little pickled, though. It’s really, REALLY pickled, to the point of puckering. Some steep it in green tea and then drink the thing to make it less concentrated, but it’s still horrifically sour (even the milder, non-dried version, umezuke, is hard to swallow). There’s at least a little science behind this one, as the

7. Sicily Three words for you. Dried. Bull. Penis. Chew on that! This has gone somewhat out of vogue, but in the past, Sicilians with hangovers would gnaw on a good ol’ dried bull penis. The assumption was that it restores your virility. Or perhaps your brain just eliminates the hangover as quickly as possible to stop your body from eating any more penisjerky.

5. Germany Belly full of Bitburger? Time for katerfrühstück , or “hangover breakfast.” Get ready for a plate of rollmops—raw, pickled herring wrapped around pieces of gherkin and onion. On an empty stomach. While suffering what Germans describe as “the wailing of the cats.” 6. Canada O, Canada! You guys do it right. To top off the last round of LaBatt, Canadians stop in for some poutine—a bowl of thick-cut french fries, with chunks of Canadian cheese curd, smothered in a savory gravy with fresh pepper corns. It’s not as good as it sounds. It’s better. It’s almost enough to make me want to move in with my Québécois exgirlfriend and her husband.

8. Haiti Some Haitian voodoo practitioners go on the offensive with their hangovers—they stick 13 blackheaded pins into the cork of the bottle that did that to them. I’m no scholar of voodoo, but I have to assume this is revenge on the bottle that brought on this awful thing in the dark of night. What do they do for screw-tops?

13. Mongolia And the winner for stomachturningest of them all? Arguably, it’s Mongolia. After a long night of wrestling and drinking, Mongolians shake off the morning cobwebs with a cocktail made of tomato juice annnnnnd... pickled sheep’s eyes. Pickled. Eyeballs. From a sheep. Two of them. Mixed with tomato juice.

9. Ancient Greece Not to be outdone by their canaryeating contemporaries, the ancient Greeks treated their hangovers with a breakfast of sheep lungs and two owl eggs. Owl eggs, sure, eggs are pretty much eggs. But lungs are extremely rubbery) Imaging that bouncing around in an upset stomach.

14-18. United States With so many strange cultural traditions in this oddball world, you might be right thinking Americans aren’t a bunch of voodoo eyeball riverbank weirdos. Not so fast. They drink enough, and they’re just as freaky as anybody else.

10. Ireland So, according to Irish legend, the best way to cure a hangover is to get buried up to your neck in wet river sand. Ireland is not a warm country, so the wet river sand should be rather chilly. This could have the same effect as a cold shower. It’ll wake you up and get the blood pumping, but there’s not much medical evidence that it cures a headache and nausea. Really, this seems like another prank-turned-legend. “Up all night drinking poteen, is it? To the river!” 11. Vietnam This one is terrible on several levels. In Vietnam, some people grind rhino horn into hot water and drink it. This same trick is believed to “cure” everything from allergies to cancer. As a result, the demand for rhino horns is so high that those amazing creatures are being poached at insane numbers. There’s no way it works, so please stop killing the rhinos. 12. Turkey Trouble with your gut? You just need more guts. That’s the logic behind Turkey’s hangover cure: Tripe soup. The innards are boiled with garlic, onion, and sometimes cream. You can even eat it prophylactically to prevent an imminent hangover. Maybe there’s something to it—this is also a popular remedy in Mexico and Romania—but honestly, it makes a headache sound not so bad.

14. Raw eggs. Let’s start with the Prairie Oyster, a popular remedy in the Western U.S. There are many variations, but they all include Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt n’ pepper, and a whole raw egg. Gulp, down the hatch. Optional ingredients include a shot of vodka, ketchup or tomato juice, and vinegar. Oh, and maybe salmonella. 15. Sweat swishing. Some Native American cultures, according to the BBC, believe that you should go for a run and work up a sweat. Then you lick the sweat off your arms, swish it around, and spit it out. Exercise certainly can help push the toxins through your system. The licking and spitting thing? Leave that part out. 16. Hangover Heaven. In Vegas there is a special morning after bus called Hangover Heaven. Climb aboard, and the crew administers fluids, vitamins, and other supplements via IV while you cruise the strip.

In the wild west days, cowboys drank a “tea” rabbit droppings. Just pellets and steep them in Rabbit poo tea. Yep.

hungover made of take the hot water.

19. Personal Choice For years I knew someone who had a hangover cure that worked almost every time, though we definitely can’t recommend it, and neither would your doctor. After a night out boozing, here’s what he did when he got home... 1) Drink as much water possible. 2) Pop a vitamin B-complex, because alcohol depletes you of those vitamins. 3) Take a couple of aspirin. After doing those three things, He almost never, ever woke up with a hangover. Science beats superstition, every time. That said, doctors have since warned us against this cure. Taking aspirin while there’s still alcohol in you may increase your risk of stomach-bleeding. Taking ibuprofen or other NSAIDs may be even more risky, and taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be even worse, possibly causing fulminent hepatic failure. The new best cure is to drink as much water as you can (if you have something like Emergen-C, with electrolytes, all the better), get plenty of food in your stomach, and maybe take a B-complex. Then you just hope for the best. What do you do to deal with a hangover? email us with your cures or remedies info@ultimatemagazine.es

17. Eggs Benedict. This is one thing the U.S. got very, very right. As the story goes, back in the late 1800s, a well to-do socialite partied way too hard. The next morning, he asked the restaurant at the WaldorfAstoria to put together this crazy sandwich with a poached egg, ham, and hollandaise sauce, on top of an English muffin. 18. Pellet tea. Eggs Benedict aside, the U.S. is also responsible for one of the nastiest cures on this list. 33

Wine with me

Winter Warmers By Adele Land

Nights are drawing in, seasonal festivities are just around the corner and swimsuits have been relegated to the back of the closet. Days of ice-cold beers and chilled Mojitos seem far away but that doesn’t mean the cocktail shaker and fancy glasses need to gather dust until the summer. A huge array of winter drinks are out there just waiting to tantalise our tastebuds, hot or cold, the choice is yours, liven up your party or spice up the dark evenings with one of these tantalising tipples. The Lumumba was named after an African politician, turn a comforting hot chocolate into something special with a generous dash of amaretto, rum or your favourite brandy, serve in a tall glass and if you’re feeling extra naughty add a swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate powder. A popular Spanish after-dinner drink is the Carajillo, a short strong coffee mixed with your favourite liqueur, my favourite is a ‘carajillo de Baileys’ perfect... Mulled Wine has been a seasonal staple for centuries, a favourite in the Victorian ages it is closely related to German Gluhwein. Everyone has their own recipe but the traditional version is made up of red wine (choose a decent bottle) warm gently in a pan with sugar and steep with cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. High street coffee houses offer seasonal brews, from Mint Mocha to Eggnog Latte in the run up to the festive period, be adventurous and make up your own at home, warmed milk, instant coffee and a glug of something from the cocktail cabinet and hey presto you have your own ‘barista’ style delight!

36

Irish Coffee was all the rage in the 1970s no visit to a Beefeater steakhouse was complete without rounding off the meal with one of these decadent treats. Slip on the flares with a brightly coloured shirt and revisit the decade of dubious taste with a liquid blast from the past. Brew some black coffee, pour into a (heatproof) goblet glass, add a good measure of Irelands best and top off with half an inch of single cream, poured slowly over the back of a spoon for a professional finish, the cream should sit on the top of the liquid, pop on a T Rex album (vinyl of course) and enjoy!

A pint of the black stuff, Guinness conjures up traditional pubs, wooden beams, cosy snugs and roaring fires, although best served chilled, the pride of Dublin still fits in with our winter selection with its smooth texture and distinctive rich flavour.

Teetotal or designated driver, warm comforting drinks don’t all involve alcohol, a wide range of fruit teas and infusions add a twist to Britain’s favourite beverage, citrus, berry with a hint of spice, ginseng or other heady, health giving ingredients are a tonic for the mind and soul.

Hopefully we have given you some food (or drink) for thought and banished away those summer yearnings along with the bikinis for a few months at least!

Festive Fish Cakes

I thought this recipe rather apt, for this time of year. Comforting and wholesome , aswell as being quick and simple to make. These fishcakes are very versatile and can be served for: a starter, lunch, supper, even as an canapé if reduced to bite size and served on top of gem lettuce leaf with a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce!. They can be served with a nice crisp green salad, vegetables, parsley sauce or our favourite, crushed minted peas....yum. You can even freeze them (uncooked) and cook when required, ideal for those unexpected Christmas season guests.

Ingredients: These ingredients are enough to make 8 medium fishcakes or 32 canapes. • 800G potatoes • 650g Fish: Salmon, Cod or Crab ( fresh, frozen or tinned). Why not try a mixture of two types of fish! • Salt & pepper to season, as desired. • Plain flour to coat and cut the fishcakes. • Some veg/olive oil and knobs of butter for frying. • Optional extras to add to fish cake mixture: Parsley, Chives, Peas, Sweetcorn or Chilli flakes.

You will need: • Large saucepan • Drainer • Masher or potato ricer • Large mixing bowl

Method:

• Frying pan (use for poaching and then for frying) • Baking tray (only reqd if making large fishcakes) • Circular cutter or round object to cut fishcakes to desired size.

1. Poach fish (if reqd) – leave to cool. Remove bones and skin. Flake fish. 2. Cook and mash potatoes – do not add any milk or butter, just some pepper if reqd. 3. Put mashed potatoes into mixing bowl, add fish and any extras (as detailed in ingredients) and combine together. 4. Sprinkle a covering of flour over the worksurface/chopping board. 5. Divide the mixture into eight or appropriate canapé size and form each portion into desired size, either with your hands or cutter. 6. Cover the fishcakes all over with flour. 7. Chill in fridge for at least 30 minutes. 8. To cook: heat frying pan with oil and butter, fry the fishcakes until golden. If they are particulary thick or large, pop onto a baking tray and heat through in a medium hot oven for 10-15 minutes , to ensure that completely hot all the way through.

Enjoy!

Ultimate Christmas Brownies. Christmas time is the time for indulgence and these brownies are certainly indulgent!!!. These brownies are glossy on top and dense and fudgy in the centre, yum yum!! You can make in advance and they will keep for one week, if wrapped in foil or an airtight container, kept at room temperature. We like to cut the brownies into bite size nibbles, sprinkle with icing sugar for that Christmassy look, serve on a brightly covered plate. Perfect for your buffet.

Ingredients: • 175g (6oz ) Unsalted butter, chopped (a little extra butter reqd to grease. • 150g (5oz) dark chocolate, chopped up (make sure you use chocolate 70% cocoa solids). • 3 Medium eggs. • 300g (11oz) Caster sugar. • 75g (3oz) Plain flour. • 40g (1 ½ oz) Cocoa powder. • Icing sugar, optional to dust.

Method: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Melt butter and chocolate together in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water (make sure the base of the bowl does not touch the water). When the mixture is melted and smooth, lift the bowl off the pan and set aside to cool for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 180c (160c fan oven), gas mark 4. Lightly grease and line a 8inch square tin with baking parchment. Put eggs and sugar into large mixing bowl and using electric whisk, beat together until thick and moussey. Add melted and cooled chocolate mixture to above mixed bowl and fold together with a large metal spoon. Sift flour, cocoa powder and a pinch of salt to above mixture and fold together with a large metal spoon. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin, level off and bake for 30 mintues or until there is no wobble left when you gently shake the tin. Cool completely, before cutting.

Enjoy!

Peugeot 308 Car of the Year 2014 On the 3rd of March 2014, at the time of the 84th Geneva Motor Show which opens its doors to the international press the day after, the new PEUGEOT 308 has been crowned with the prestigious title of 2014 “Car of the Year”, awarded by a jury of journalists representing 22 European countries. This award is also valid for the new 308 SW which will be unveiled at Geneva Motor Show. Here is what Peugeot say on their website www.peugeot.co.uk

STYLE

EFFICIENCY

The New 308 is one-of-a-kind. It’s sleek, it’s elegant, and every last detail is designed to make your senses come alive. The bodywork is streamlined and dynamic, and the same can be said of the interior too. Our unique PEUGEOT i-Cockpit is stripped right down, with most functions controlled by the touchscreen, allowing you a high level of technology as well as a pure, minimal design.

Due to its simplified, streamlined design ethos, the New 308 is very efficient. It’s 140kg lighter than the previous 308, without sacrificing strength or space, and the range of eight engines, including PureTech petrol engines and BlueHDi diesel engines offer both power and efficiency. Even the LED headlights are now more efficient, delivering a car where performance and efficiency are perfectly balanced.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

QUALITY

Time to let your senses come out to play with the New 308. Lighter than the previous 308, with a lower centre of gravity, a more compact steering wheel and newly-developed electric power steering, the New 308 is an incredibly responsive and controlled driving experience.

The challenge behind the New 308 was to produce a car that will be like new after three years of driving it. So the greatest care has been taken over every detail, from the plush leather seating to the scratch-resistant dashboard. It’s built on a brand new platform (chassis) and is made from

a high-strength steel using a new welding process. We know we’ve built a strong, high quality car, but, just to be on the safe side, we’ve put it through its paces with over 400,000 miles of endurance and safety testing and 1000 test drivers

The Great Train

ROBBERY

Following the confession of Mojacar resident and one of The Great Train Robbers, Gordon Goody, we thought we would give some details of one of the most talked about robberies of all time. For years and years no one knew the name of the insider at the Post Office who gave the Great Train Robbers inside information on the London to Glasgow mail train that was to be robbed on 8th August 1963. It has now come to light by information from Gordon Goody, 85, who has lived in Mojacar since his release from prison in 1975. The man, only until recently known as The Ulster Man was Patrick McKenna. Then a 43-year-old Belfast man living in Islington, north London, McKenna was introduced to Goody through a third party, reports the Observer. The pair met 4 times in early 1963, with McKenna offering inside information on how the post train operated, enabling the gang to successfully stop the Glasgow-to-London Royal Mail train in the early hours of 8 August 1963. It was McKenna who persuaded the group to change the date of the robbery from August 7 to August 8 - as he knew the next day’s train would be carrying more cash. The 15-man crew got away with more than £2.6m - the equivalent of £48m today - all in £5 and £1 banknotes. Goody, 85, who served 12 years of a 30-year sentence, has decided to talk about the heist in a new book after keeping his silence for more than half a century. His introduction to crime came when he begun smuggling cattle over

46 46

the Northern Irish border to dodge customs. Now living a simple life in the Spanish countryside with his girlfriend Maria and five dogs, the former crook is in fragile health and wanted to get his side of the story to the public before it was too late. Goody only learned McKenna’s name after seeing it scribbled on the inside of his glasses case. The Ulsterman had accidentally dropped it in the grass while getting up to buy the plotters some ice cream in Kensington Gardens three months before the heist.

a car. His family believe Mckenna may have donated the money to the Catholic Church after letting his conscience get the better of him - as it is clear he never spent it. In Goody’s book he also expresses regret over the coshing of the train driver, Jack Mills, claiming it was unplanned by the group who saw themselves as ‘gentleman robbers’. He said: ‘The fact the driver was hurt, that’s the thing I regret. Nobody was going to get hurt. We knew it changed everything. I was choked, choked.’

It is generally agreed it was either Buster Edwards or James Hussey who hit Mills over the head. Despite Hussey making a deathbed confession in 2012, Goody insists it was not him but has upheld a criminal code of silence over who the actual perpetrator was refusing to confirm that it was Edwards. Police never suspected McKenna - During the recent interview Goody also partly because his share of the cash speaks disdainfully of Ronnie Biggs, seemed to disappear from history after who died in December last year. it was stuffed into two holdalls and a mailbag and loaded into the boot of a He said: ‘Biggsy was an a***hole. down to his crew members played a part in the change, setting a new precedent which meant criminals had a lot less to lose. But he admits that back in the 60s he never had had any second thoughts about his choice of occupation. He added:’My old man wanted me to be a plumber’s mate. I wanted to be a criminal. You never have to work hard to be a criminal. ‘You do something, see something, you’ve no money, you take it. I was always a thief, never a gangster.’ Like most of the robbers, the lion’s share of his money was spent by the time he emerged from prison by a friend he had left it with. He remains tight lipped about whether there is any cash left in the book - which he views as a chance ‘to put a few things straight’ - including dispelling the idea that he was ever a hairdresser, as many people believe. Bruce Reynolds Gang-leader and mastermind Reynolds was nicknamed ‘Napoleon’ and after the Great Train Robbery he fled to Mexico on a false passport and was joined by his wife, Angela, and son, Nick. They later moved on to Canada but the cash from the robbery ran out and he came back to England. Five years after the heist, in 1968, a broke Reynolds was captured in Torquay and sentenced to 25 years in jail. He was released on parole in 1978 and moved, alone and penniless, into a tiny flat off London’s Edgware Road.

Ronnie Biggs Ronald Arthur ‘Ronnie’ Biggs played a minor role in the robbery, but his life as a fugitive after escaping from prison gained him notoriety. He was given a 30-year sentence in 1964, but he escaped after 15 months by fleeing over the walls of London’s Wandsworth prison in April 1965. After having plastic surgery, he lived as a fugitive for 36 years in first Australia then Brazil, where he fathered a son Michael. His health deteriorated in 2001 and he returned to the UK voluntarily where he was sent back to prison. Ronald ‘Buster’ Edwards An ex-boxer, club owner and smalltime crook who fled to Mexico after the heist but gave himself up in 1966. Edwards is widely believed to be the man who wielded the cosh used to hit train driver Jack Mills over the head. Mills’ family say he never recovered, and he died seven years later. Edwards served nine years in jail and then became a familiar figure selling flowers outside Waterloo station in London.

Wilson moved to Marbella, Spain, where he was shot and killed by a hitman on a bicycle in 1990. Roy James A silversmith and racing driver, James dreamed of investing his share of the loot in new car technology. He was nicknamed ‘Weasel’ and was the chief getaway driver. James left a tell-tale fingerprint at the gang’s farm hideout after the heist and was caught following a chase over rooftops in London. Jailed for 30 years, he served 12 and later sold silver from a market stall before moving to Spain. Brian Field A crooked solicitor who the gang used for the conveyancing when they bought the farm hideout used after the heist. Field was arrested and sentenced to 25 years, which was later reduced to five.

Patrick McKenna

Charlie Wilson Wilson was the gang’s ‘treasurer’ who gave each of the robbers their cut of the haul. He was captured quickly and during his trial at Aylesbury Crown Court in 1964 earned the nickname ‘the silent man’ as he refused to say anything. He was jailed for 30 years but escaped after just four months. He was captured again in Canada after four years on the run and served 10 more years in jail. He was the final train robber to emerge from prison in 1978.

I realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat. They say the camera adds 10lbs. Stop eating cameras! My girlfriend said she wanted me to tease her, so I said: “Alright, fatty?” Boxers don’t have sex before a fight. Do you know why that is? They don’t fancy each other. I hate those e-mails where they try to sell you penis enhancers. I got ten just the other day. Eight of them from my girlfriend. It’s the two from my mum that really hurt.

Jo Brand Josephine “Jo” Grace Brand (born 23 July 1957) is a BAFTA-winning English comedienne, writer and actress. Brand was born in Wandsworth, London and was the middle of three children. She moved to Benenden, Tunbridge Wells as a child and got her education in and around the area, including Hastings. After working in a pub, for Barnardo’s and as a nursing assistant she took a joint social science degree with a Registered Mental Nurse qualification at Brunel University. She then worked as a psychiatric nurse for ten years. When I was pregnant, my friends sneered: ‘Eating for two, are we?’… I said, get lost, I’m not cutting down. I was not a particularly small child. I was the one who always got picked to play Bethlehem in the school nativity. My bloody neighbour banged on my front door at 2.30 this morning. Thank God I was still up playing the drums. These programmes on TV about women being domestic goddesses are just not true, are they? I’d have a programme that truly represented how women approach housework. And if I did, it would be called, ‘F*ck it, that’ll do’.

Starting her entertainment career with a move from psychiatric nursing to the alternative comedy stand-up scene and early performances on Saturday Live, she went on to appear on The Brain Drain, Channel 4’s Jo Brand Through the Cakehole, Getting On and various television appearances including as a regular guest on QI and Have I Got News for You. In 2003, Brand was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy.

Av Locutor Vicente Hipólito, 37-39, 03540. Playa de San Juan, Alicante. (+34) 965 15 37 94 Alicante Golf is on the Mediterranean coast, next to the spectacular San Juan beach and only 5 minutes from the centre of Alicante. A green haven set in a residential area, the course features wide fairways lined with thousands of trees. The top priorities in maintaining the course are caring for the environment and saving water, making it the first golf course in Spain to be awarded both of the most prestigious environmental quality standard certificates: ISO-14.001 and the Q-Plus certificate.

Severiano Ballesteros designed this fantastic 72-par course that includes six par-three holes, six par-four holes and six parfive holes, meaning that no two consecutive holes are played with the same par in any one round. This format makes play more varied and entertaining and gives golfers many more chances of scoring a birdie. Seve also designed 5 large lakes affecting 12 of the 18 holes, resulting in an attractive and challenging course for golfers of all abilities.

The ruins came to light during building work on the course and the ball has to clear them to get to the green. Alicante Golf is a noble course, with wide fairways and no blind shots. The competition level fast greens are a real joy to play on and are kept in immaculate condition. Alicante Golf is an oasis in the middle of the city, a challenge for players and an amazing sight.

THE RIGHT CLUBS Introduction This article and the articles that are to follow in later issues are all about golf clubs, how they work and why they work the way that they do. I will explain how it is possible for you to choose a set of golf clubs that are right for you. Clubs that will allow you to maximize your strengths and minimize any weaknesses that you may have in your swing. How it is possible, for a minimal financial outlay of a few Euros, have your present clubs customized so that you will be able to play the game of golf to your full potential and above all enjoy the game.

and finely adjusted and tinkered with to suit their swing. It is a fallacy to think that custom-made golf clubs and putters are only for the professionals or the very best golfers. Professional golfers are good enough to be able to play well with any set of golf clubs. The average golfer on the other hand is not. This means that amateur golfer need to have his/her clubs properly customized and fitted to their swing even more than the professional do. All golfers should have their clubs properly customized and fitted to suit their physique and swing. This will minimize any swing faults and maximize any swing strengths. Clubs that are: a. Of the incorrect length for your height and your arm length. b. Incorrect in loft and lie. c. Fitted with the wrong shaft flex for your swing speed. d. Incorrectly swing weighted or balanced for your swing. ...will hamper you from achieving your full potential as a golfer.

impossible to be hit with any consistency by the average amateur golfer. We all buy these clubs and take them out on our weekly medal rounds, knowing full well that we have no confidence in our ability to hit these clubs consistently well when the time comes that we have to use them. There is a rule among custom club makers called the 24/38 rule. This rule implies that the vast majority of amateur golfers do not have the natural ability to hit an iron that has a loft angle of less than 24 degrees and is more than 38 inches in length (5 iron). So consider ditching the 3 and 4 irons and possibly the 5 iron and replace them with a couple of suitably lofted hybrid clubs. This will go a long way to reducing your score and your handicap. Prior to selecting a new set of golf clubs, you need to understand how: a. The loft angle of your clubs affects the trajectory and distance of your shots. b. The lie angle of you clubs can have an effect on the direction of your shots. c. Clubs of the correct length for your height and arm length can provide more accuracy and on- centre hits. d. Your swing speed needs to be matched to flex of the shafts in your clubs. e. Shaft flex and weight affects trajectory, length and direction of your shots. f. Having the correct sized grip allows you to control the club without excessive tension in your hands.

It is a known fact that most amateur golfers have little knowledge of how their golf clubs work. This lack of knowledge of how golf clubs work, means that an already difficult and frustrating game that is being played with ill-fitting equipment Buying a new set of golf clubs from a High becomes an almost impossible game to Street Golf Store or online without them being properly fitted for you is like going play to an acceptable level. into a shoe shop to buy a new pair of If you don’t believe me, the next time shoes.
