WELCOME Welcome to the Spring edition of UltimateAlmeria. This edition covers many events such as Easter, Mother´s Day, St. Patrick´s Day and some major sporting events such as The Masters Golf from Augusta and The Grand National from Aintree. There are signs that the warmer weather is on its way with lots of activity happening with the beach bars, painting and updating their premises ready for the season especially as Easter is early this year at the end of March. Easter or Semana Santa as the Spanish call it, has a great deal of parades and other things to see and do, so look out for the information given by your local council on all that is happening in your Town or Village. For example check out www.mojacar.es or www.vera.es to see their tourist information for the coming months. In this magazine we try to put information and stories to interest a wide variety of people therefore if there is anything you would like to see in forthcoming editions please write to us at info@ultimatealmeria.com. We have in this edition a destination report to Amsterdam, a popular destination for travelers in Spring time, the story of the bomb just off Palomares, The Grand National and of course the recipe page. As well as these articles we have many new advertisers especially some completely new ventures so please take an interest and support your local businesses it is the only way that this area can thrive and survive. Thank you. Editor

I wouldn't go to sick bay because they would have taken me out of the program," Brashear said in 2002 when he was inducted into the Gallery of Great Black Kentuckians. "Instead, I'd go hide somewhere and soak my leg in a bucket of hot water with salt in it — that's an old remedy I learned growing up."
Carl M. Brashear, the first black U.S. Navy diver, who was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 2000 film "Men of Honor,"
Brashear faced an uphill battle when he joined the Navy in 1948 at the age of 17, not long after the U.S. military desegregated. "I went to the Army office, and they weren't too friendly," Brashear said in 2002. "But the Navy recruiter was a lot nicer. Looking back, I was placed in my calling." "Growing up on a farm in Kentucky, I always dreamed of doing something challenging," he said. "When I saw the divers for the first time, I knew it was just what I wanted."
Brashear retired from the Navy in 1979 after more than 30 years of service. He was the first Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee, the result of a leg injury he sustained during In 1954, he was accepted and graduated from the diving a salvage operation. program, despite daily battles with In 1966, Brashear was tasked with discrimination. recovering a hydrogen bomb that "Hate notes were left on my bunk,” he dropped into waters off Spain near said. “They didn't want me to make it Palomares, Almeria, when two U.S. Air through the program.” Force planes collided whilst refuling. In January 1966, in an accident now known as the Palomares incident, a B28 nuclear bomb was lost off the coast of Palomares, Spain, after two United States Air Force aircraft of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), a B52 bomber and an aerial refueling aircraft, collided during refuelling. Brashear was serving aboard the USS Hoist when it was called in to find and recover the missing bomb for the US Air Force. The warhead was found after two and a half months of searching. During recovery operations on March 23, 1966, a line used for towing broke loose, causing a pipe to strike
Brashear's left leg below the knee, nearly shearing it off. He was evacuated to Torrejon Air Base in Spain, then to the USAF Hospital at, Weisbaden Air Base, Germany; and finally to the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Beset with persistent infection and necrosis, his left leg was eventually amputated. Brashear remained at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth from May 1966 until March 1967 recovering and rehabilitating from the amputation. From March 1967 to March 1968, Brashear was assigned to the Harbor
Clearance Unit Two, Diving School, preparing for return to full active duty and diving. In April 1968, after a long struggle, he became the first amputee to be certified as a diver. In 1970, he became the first African-American U.S. Navy Master Diver, and served ten more years beyond that, achieving the rank of Master Chief Boatswain's Mate in 1971. Brashear was motivated by his beliefs: "It's not a sin to get knocked down; it's a sin to stay down" and "I ain't going to let nobody steal my dream".

Grand National The
This year, the world´s biggest steeplechase takes place on Saturday 6th April at 4.15pm - Aintree as usual. Since the inaugural running in 1839, when Lottery etched his name on the roll of honour, victory in the Grand National has been the pinnacle of ambition for owners, trainers and jockeys worldwide. Hollywood actors, moguls, pop stars, comedians, coiffeurs, celebrities of all hues, sporting heroes, politicians, aristocrats, business people of every variety, Kings, Queens and Princes have all tried for success; just a fortunate few have succeeded. It is the most famous chase in the world and one of the biggest tests for racehorse and rider around two circuits of the Grand National course - with 30 fences to be jumped as four and a half miles is covered. There are numerous famous landmarks which are an integral part of Grand National folklore; Becher’s Brook, the Canal Turn, Valentine’s and the Chair are fences known around the globe. Familiar phrases of commentators such as “crossing the Melling Road” are built into people’s subconscious, while there is the ‘elbow’, with the winning post in sight, where many a potential victor has felt the last reserves of stamina ebb away and with it, immortality. And there is nothing quite like that sensation of heart-clutching, wriggling expectation as the 40-strong field for the John Smith’s Grand National is persuaded into a fair line, ready to tackle the long run to the first fence.
10
Whether at Aintree or at home watching the peerless television coverage, a general hush falls until the starter calls the runners into line. The tape is released and then a roar - the most anticipated race of the year has begun. The sense of excitement begins at such a great height, tumbles and hurtles onwards throughout nearly 10 minutes of breathtaking action and often afterwards. Betting slips, carefully clutched, are not to be celebrated until the result has been officially announced. Many are the reversals of fortune in the 465 yards between the last fence and the winning post, with replays avidly studied to determine what happened where to each of the runners and riders. Devon Loch’s inexplicable collapse in the 1956 Grand National, a mere 50 yards from victory, serves as a constant reminder that the race is often won and lost in the final run from the ‘elbow’. Once-a-year punters come out in force on John Smith’s Grand National day, studying the list of runners to locate their selection from the office/shop sweepstake, or placing their wager on a horse with a name they like or one linked to a topical event - Party Politics was a popular choice when he won the great race in 1992, with the nation on the brink of a general election. At 4.15pm on Saturday, April 6th 2013, the scheduled off-time of the John Smith’s Grand National, there will be
few bookmakers willing to lay odds about what many in Britain, and plenty more throughout the world, will be doing for the next quarter of an hour. Not only is the great race compellingly demanding - the feeling of even completing is one cherished by all involved - but it is also financially rewarding. Whether in one of Britain’s 9,000 offcourse betting shops, over the telephone, through the internet or interactively, regular punters and the annually curious will be out in force. Bookmakers estimate that around £500 million is wagered in Britain on the day, making the race easily the biggest single turnover event, and the most anticipated. Most Famous runner Red Rum is probably the most famous racehorse the world has ever seen. Everyone knows his name, whether a racing enthusiast or a once a year punter. He was foaled in 1965 and trained on the Southport sands by Ginger McCain. Red Rum won the 1973, 1974 and 1977 Grand Nationals and was runner-up in 1975 and 1976 - an unparalleled record. Red Rum, died in 1995 at the age of 30 and is buried near the winning post and is commemorated by a one-and-a-half time life-size bronze at the venue.

Las Fallas From 13th to 19th March, Valencia celebrates one of Spain's best known festivals: Las Fallas.
Each neighbourhood of the city has an organized group of people, the Casal faller, that works all year long holding fundraising parties and dinners, usually featuring the famous specialty paella. Each casal faller produces a construction known as a falla which is eventually burnt. A casal faller is also known as a comissió fallera.
The Origins There are various theories concerning the origins of Fallas. Some claim that the festivals have been celebrated in Valencia since the Middle Ages when carpenters used to light a bonfire on 19th March, St Joseph Day. Joseph - José in Spanish - is the Patron Saint of Valencia, and St Joseph's Day is Fathers Day all over Spain.
Formerly, much time would be spent by the Casal faller preparing the ninots (Valencian for puppets or dolls). During the four days leading up to March 19th, each group takes its ninot out for a grand parade, and then mounts it, each on its own elaborate firecracker-filled cardboard and paper-mâché artistic monument in a street of the given neighbourhood. This whole assembly is a falla. Fireworks and firecrackers play a big role in any fiestas held in this region, and Fallas is no exception. Be careful of firecrackers being thrown along the street by youngsters. And be prepared for the ground to shake with the force of the fireworks display which begins at midnight.
16
A second theory suggests that the tradition of lighting bonfires in honour of the saints arose from pagan customs which the Church accepted and adapted to its own interests, because their popularity made them impossible to ban.
The Fallas are divided into seven important stages. The city is adorned in decorations and fallas, and public enthusiasm takes to the streets. During the week the following ceremonies take place: 1) The nomination and proclamation of the Fallas Queens. 2) The Exaltation 3) The Crida 4) The Cavalcade of the Ninot 5) The Offering of Flowers 6) The Planta 7) The Cremรก. The Crema is the culmination of the Fallas. For some it is the saddest moment, while for others it is the highest point of the festival.
(there are several categories under which fallas compete). One "ninot" is saved each year, from the flames by popular vote and exhibited in the Museum of the Ninot.
At about midnight on the 19th, Valencia literally goes up in flames as more than three hundred fires are burnt throughout the city, the spectacle is as awesome as it is unforgettable.
The Fallas are lit on the night of St. Joseph, 19th March. The last ones to be burnt are the fallas which have won prizes for the best ones 17

"When it's Spring again, I'll bring again, tulips from Amsterdam" ...crooned Max Bygraves in 1958. In fact these beautiful blooms were first cultivated in Turkey and were introduced into the Netherlands in the 17th century by Viennese botanist Carolus Clusius for medicinal purposes.
The Famous Red Light District
The name "Tulip" was derived from the Turkish word for turban because of their shape. In the late 1600's the upper classes started to use tulips as a garden decoration and a few years later they were seen as a status symbol with some examples costing more than an average man's monthly wage!
Wealthy Netherlanders couldn't get enough of these luxurious and exotic flowers, the more tulips a person displayed, the higher their social status. Traders were earning huge amounts of money and everyone wanted a piece of the action, people going so far as to sell all their possessions in order to buy the bulbs and reap the rewards. Unfortunately this created an oversupply and as a result, prices plummeted and many growers went out of business. Tulip & Garden Tours These days, visitors flock from around the world to the Dutch capital, Amsterdam to take in the sights and enjoy a day trip to the vast tulip fields on the edge of the city. The most well
22
known areas to see the tulips are near the towns of Haarlem and Sassenheim about 30 miles from Amsterdam, or to see a real showcase of the many different varieties, visit the Keukenhof Gardens in the town of Lisse. There are various ways to tour the tulip fields, if you prefer to make your own schedule you can take a bus to the edge of Keukenhof Gardens and then hire a bike for around 10€, entrance fee to the gardens is 14€ and you can take a gentle ride at your own pace. A guided tour with hotel pick up will cost from 35€ and includes coach transport to and from the city and entrance to the gardens. The best time to see the gardens and fields in bloom is from March to May, although throughout the year there are flowers of all varieties flourishing on the flat, lush landscape. Activities As all Amsterdamers will tell you, there is more to their city than just tulips! Famed for its inland waterways and cafe culture, Amsterdam has much to offer for a weekend break or longer visit, take a relaxing boat ride along the canals or for the more energetic, rent a bike or pair of inline skates and explore the city in the style of the locals.
Culture Amsterdam is certainly a city of culture and is home to many famous museums including the Van Gough museum and the Anne Frank House, there's even a museum dedicated to handbags! Food Dining out is a way of life in Amsterdam and this has lead to the city fast becoming one of the culinary capitals of Europe. Choose from a wide selection of eateries offering delights from all corners of the world, in particular Indonesian food and also Jewish cuisine. Typical Dutch dishes include Hachee, a tasty rich, beef and onion stew and of course Dutch cheese is in abundance, a famous Dutch liqueur is Advocaat, made from eggs, sugar and brandy, well worth a try and far removed from the bottled, luminous yellow liquid to be found in Grandma's drinks cabinet!
Bars & Nightlife Bars are open until the early hours and are a perfect place to indulge in my favourite pastime, people watching! You can't talk about Amsterdam and not mention the "Red Light District" ironically, the so called Rosseburt (Dutch for 'red neighbourhood') is in one of the most historical and charming parts of the city, it's cobbled streets, with old leaning buildings are well worth wandering through and soaking up the unique vibe. It may not be to everyone's taste but the Dutch pride themselves on being liberal and tolerant and "the world's oldest profession" is perfectly legal here. On the subject of legal; Amsterdam's infamous "coffee shops" became subject to a new law at the start of 2013 which stipulates that only Dutch Residents are allowed to purchase their "products", however, apparently the new law so far has been widely ignored! (Remember, you didn't hear it here!!) Hotels Accommodation in Amsterdam is plentiful and there is somewhere to stay to suit all budgets. Some of the top hotels include; The Conservatorium, a converted bank building in the chic fashion district with rooms from 250€ per night. A little easier on the wallet is the elegant Park Plaza Victoria, centrally located and close to transport links. There are many low cost Hostels in the city mainly catering to backpackers and party goers but you can also find a quiet simple B&B off the beaten track and still enjoy a good night's sleep, one example is the Stayokay Zeeburg with rooms from as little as 20€. For something completely different, you can even experience canal life by staying on the Hotelboot Angeline, a 12 room canal boat with views of the city, from 25€ per room. Wherever you stay and whatever you see and do in Amsterdam, I am confident that this vibrant capital city with its colourful atmosphere will fill you with long lasting memories and a desire to return. March prices to fly to Amsterdam are; from Almeria 230€ return, from Murcia 160€ return and from Alicante only 115€ return. Resource; SkyScanner.net

THEGOLFPAGE ...your regular insight into Spains best and most played golf courses, world tournaments and news this issue
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta, Georgia, USA.
Located in Augusta, Georgia, is probably the most famous golf club in the world. Founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts on the site of a former indigo plantation, the course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened for play in January 1933. Since 1934, it has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf, and the only major played each year at the same course.
With the Masters Golf Tournament coming as the first Major of the season, we thought we would give our readers some information about the famous competition.
It was the number one ranked course in Golf Digest's 2009 list of America's 100 greatest courses and is currently the number ten ranked course on Golfweek Magazine's 2011 list of best classic courses in the United States, in terms of course architecture.
2013 Masters Golf Dates The Masters Tournament is always in the first full week of April, so April 8th - April 14th 2013 will be the dates for this years Masters, with Monday the 8th through Wednesday the 10th being the practice rounds and Thursday the 11th through Sunday the 14th being the Tournament rounds.
The golf club's exclusive membership policies have drawn criticism, particularly its refusal to admit black members until 1990, a former policy requiring all caddies to be black and its refusal to allow women to join. In August 2012, it admitted its first two female members - Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore. The golf club has defended the membership policies, stressing that it is a private organization.

Every member of Augusta National receives a green sports coat with the club's logo on the left breast. The idea of the green jacket originated with club co-founder Clifford Roberts. Many believe it is because he wanted patrons visiting during the tournament to be able to readily identify members. Since Sam Snead's victory in 1949, the winner of each year's Masters Tournament has received a green jacket. The jacket is presented to the new winner by the winner of the previous tournament. If the previous champion is either unavailable or has won consecutive tournaments, then the current chairman acts as the presenter. Until 1967, the jackets were manufactured by Brooks Brothers and since have been made by Hamilton of Cincinnati, Ohio.

St. Patrick’s Day
Everyone knows the name, but what about the man? Brush up on St Patrick's story, and the myths surrounding him, in honour of this year's festivities on March 17th. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, although he was born in Britain, around 385AD. His parents Calpurnius and Conchessa were Roman citizens living in either Scotland or Wales, according to different versions of his story. Legend has it that he used the native shamrock as a symbol of the holy trinity when preaching and brought the Latin alphabet to Ireland. Miracles attributed to him include the driving of serpents out of Ireland. However, evidence suggests post-glacial Ireland never had any snakes in the first place. Wearing green, eating green food and even drinking green beer, is said to commemorate St Patrick's use of the shamrock - although blue was the original colour of his vestments. St Patrick was said to have proclaimed that everyone should have a drop of the "hard stuff" on his feast day after chastising an innkeeper who served a short measure of whiskey. In the custom known as "drowning the shamrock", the shamrock that has been worn on a lapel or hat is put in the last drink of the evening. Popular Irish toasts on St Patrick's Day, include: may the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out. Until the 1970s, all pubs were shut in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day, the sole venue selling drink being the annual dog show. Lenten fasting – and the obligation to abstain from meat – were lifted on the day, which most families would begin with Mass. On any given day 5.5 million pints of Guinness, the famous Irish stout brand, are consumed around the world. But on St. Patrick's Day, that number more than doubles to 13 million pints, said Beth Davies Ryan, global corporate-relations director of Guinness. It is believed that St Patrick died on March 17 in 461AD. It is a national holiday in Ireland, and on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean, which was founded by Irish refugees. It is a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Dublin has a parade that attracts hundreds of thousands of people, while in Chicago the river is dyed green for a few hours. Since 1962, tons of green dye are tipped into the Chicago river, although the quantity has reduced, for environmental reasons, from 100 to 40.

Semana Santa is the Spanish term for Holy Week, the week preceding Easter in the Catholic calendar. Semana Santa commemorates the last week of Jesus' life, beginning with His arrival in Jerusalem, celebrated on Palm Sunday, and culminating in His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Spain and many other Catholic Spanish - speaking countries are known for their elaborate processions and celebrations during Semana Santa. Semana Santa, like any other festival, has it’s own special flavours and this is especially during

this week because traditionally Catholics are not supposed to eat meat. The exact dishes will vary to some degree depending on where you are celebrating in Andalucia. However, you can expect local “Menus of the Day” to feature fish and vegetables. The Andalucian Garbanzos con Bacalao (Chickpeas with Cod) stew a favourite in many areas as well as a totally vegetarian dish called Garbanzos with Spinach (which usually has a lot of garlic and is a wonderfully tasty way to eat spinach).
Traditional Dress The uniform has been in use since the Middle Ages, designed to let people practice penance publicly without revealing their identity. The penitents may walk the streets barefoot wearing chains or carrying crosses in imitation of Christ's Passion. Ironically, the anti-Catholic terrorist group Ku Klux Klan later used the nazareno as inspiration for their own uniforms.
Granada There are numerous unforgettable moments in the Easter celebrations in Granada, in which 32 cofradías (brotherhoods) participate. Unique settings such as the Albayzín quarter, the Alhambra and the Sacromonte hills fill with processions, religious figures and carvings, and the cofradía members.
On the night of Holy Wednesday it is the turn of the Cristo de los Gitanos, a spectacular and moving sight thanks to the huge fires lit in the caves and homes of Sacromonte. On Holy Thursday the procession of the Cristo de Silencio takes place, the silence broken only by the sound of the drums. This is when the Albayzín fills with colour and a special aroma. Meanwhile, at nightfall on Good Friday the oldest cofradía of all, the Soledad de San Jerónimo, takes to the streets in a thrilling procession in which real people represent historical figures from the Bible. Finally, Easter week in Granada culminates on Easter Sunday with the procession of the facundillos in which children carry ceramic lanterns (facundillos) that jingle as they walk along.
Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deeprooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. This commemoration has centuries of history and tradition, remembering the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of the majority of Spain's cities, towns and villages become the stage for religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation in memory of Christ's death. Music, art and colour come together in magical processions - solemn parades in which crowds of people accompany religious images on their route through the streets.

as the following case illustrates. Jane Doe a 69 year old woman had been living happily in Spain for a number of years. Recently widowed she had been becoming more forgetful not remembering to take the tablets that had been prescribed for her, accusing her friends of taking her medication and hiding it and calling the guarda out to her house as she was convinced that wild animals were in her garden – especially in the small hours of the morning. Her best .friend and neighbour who saw Jane every day also noticed that Jane seemed to be tired all the time and was very breathless not able to do even the lightest of household chores. Jane had previously enjoyed a full and active social life and was often seen as the life and soul of the party. Jane’s neighbour was fearful that she was developing Alzheimers Disease as her own father had several years before. She was really worried about Jane as she knew that since her husband had died Jane had no close family to help her nor did she really know how to go about getting help for Jane.

Gibraltar The rock of Gibraltar occupies a strategic position at the eastern entrance to the narrow strait and guards the only exit from the Mediterranean to the wide ocean beyond. Gibraltar has been in the historical limelight for over 3,000 years. 4,000 years ago the ancient mariners daren't pass the rock for fear of the currents. The Phoenicians sailed past it and used it as an important landmark, marking the entrance to the Atlantic. The Greeks gave it the name Calpe which means urn, possibly because of its shape. The present name of Gibraltar comes from the Arabs who invaded Spain in the VIII century. Tarik was the leader of the invading army. Since then the rock has been known as Gibel Tarik - the mountain of Tarik. The Arabic name has altered over the centuries to its present form of Gibraltar. Tarik did not build the Moorish castle, nor did he found the city. Both were built five centuries after his death. He did however, build a fortification along where Southport Gates now stand and up the side of the rock. It was in 1160 that the city was founded by the Sultan of Morocco, Abd-al-Mummin who built a castle and citadel. The first town was very small. 200 years later after the fall of Algeciras to the Christian forces, the city of Gibraltar was extended as far as Southport Gates. The present line of Main Street is almost the same today as it was 600 years ago when it was built by the Muslims. It was during the capture of Gibraltar by the Castillians (13091333) that the streets of the lower
38
town were constructed and Gibraltar became a substantial city. It wasn't until the time of Cromwell when Britain first became interested in the rock but it was not captured until the War of the Spanish Succession. Gibraltar became a British garrison in 1830 and was declared a colony. Spain has never been able to accept the loss of Gibraltar with good grace and twice during the 18th century she tried to recapture it without success. The first time was the short siege of 1727. There was a more serious attempt during the American Revolution when Spain joined forces with France in the war with a specific aim of taking Gibraltar. The Great Siege commenced on June 21st 1779 and lasted nearly 4 years. During this time the rock was defended by a force of 7,000, commanded by the Governor, General Sir George Eliott. The battle eventually ended on February 2nd 1783. The city took many years to rebuild, hence the lack of Moorish buildings remaining here. Gibraltar has been a fortress for centuries and evidence of this is to be found all over the rock, from guns to battlements and gun turrets. The museum of Gibraltar houses an impressive collection of artefacts dating back to pre-historic Gibraltar, when caves were occupied by the first settlers.
THE BARBARY APES The Gibraltar Barbary macaques are considered by many to be the top tourist attraction in Gibraltar. The most popular troop is that of Queen's Gate at the Apes' Den, where people can get especially close to the monkeys. They will often approach and sometimes climb onto people, as they are used to human interaction. Nevertheless, they are still wild animals and will bite if frightened or annoyed. The macaques' contact with large numbers of tourists was causing the integrity of their social groups to break down, as they began to become dependent on humans. This induced the monkeys to forage in the town, resulting in damages to buildings, clothing, and vehicles. For this reason, feeding the macaques in Gibraltar is now an offence punishable by law. Anyone caught feeding the monkey´s is liable to be fined up to £500.
The Barbary macaque population in Gibraltar is the only one in the European continent, and, unlike that of North Africa, it is thriving. At present, some 300 animals in five troops occupy the area of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, though occasional forays into the town may result in damage to personal property. Three female Barbary macaques can also be seen at the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park in the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. As they are a tailless species, they are also known locally as Barbary apes or rock apes, despite being monkeys (Macaca sylvanus). The local people simply refer to them as monos (English: monkeys) when conversing in Spanish or Llanito (the local vernacular).

Lawless is an epic gangster tale set in rural Virginia in the early 1930s . It tells the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers, bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream trying to keep a supply of alcohol running during Prohibition. But they soon find themselves under threat from the authorities who want a cut of their profits in the form of 'security money'. A vicious turf war ensues as the brothers fight tooth and nail to retain their hard-won livelihood. The loyalty of the three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation's most notorious crime wave. Interspersed with excellent acting, humour and sudden violence, Lawless is very much worth a watch. Madagascar 3. Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple in this wildly entertaining and outrageous comedic adventure that film critics are calling “charming and very funny!”. The film opens with the penguins flying off in a monkey-powered plane to visit the casinos of Monte Carlo, leaving the others back in Africa awaiting their return. When the penguins don't come back, the lion, zebra, hippo, and giraffe go after them and find themselves on the run through Europe. The whole crew joins a travelling circus to escape Captain Dubois, an Animal Control officer obsessed with acquiring a lion head for her wall. The suspense is fantastic as the foursome go to great lengths to impress the veteran circus animals and improve the struggling circus's show. Full of high-flying action and colourful new characters, a crazy extravaganza everyone will love.

The Bikini It seems somewhat amazing that the bikini, that sexily scant swimsuit that has become such a cultural icon in the U.S. and elsewhere, could have been in existence for only a mere 60 years. Surely the outfit that has so completely taken over the world´s beaches and swimming pools and become such an entrenched part of its culture has a longer history than just six decades. Interestingly enough, depending upon how one defines the term “bikini,” it actually has a history that reaches back thousands of years.
The bikini’s history begins far back in early civilization. Based on evidence from Roman mosaics and murals, historians have long believed that the bikini was popular swimming attire for ancient Roman women. In a time when cultural and moral norms were much more lax than they are today, the bikini was right at home. However, some historians believe that the bikini was actually in existence long before ancient Rome. In recent decades, cave excavators have discovered Minoan wall paintings from approximately 1600 B.C. that show a two-piece outfit strikingly similar to the modern-day bikini. In the paintings, women involved in a type of gymnastic exercise are wearing costumes that could easily be mistaken for twentieth century bikinis. This rendition of the bikini from more than 3,600 years ago attests to its tremendous staying power in popular fashion. Although archaeological evidence points to the existence of the bikini long before the twentieth century, documented history of the modern bikini begins the summer after the close of World War II. As France recovered from the reeling effects of the war on its home soil, Jacques Heim, a fashion designer from the popular beach resort of Cannes, was busily working on his latest style invention, a two-piece swimsuit of a very revealing nature. Heim debuted his creation in a local beach shop in the early summer of 1946. He named the swimsuit the “Atome” in honor of the recently discovered atom, the smallest particle of matter yet detected. He then sent skywriters over Cannes’ beaches, announcing that the Atome, “the world’s smallest bathing suit,” was now available for purchase. Heim may have become more than just a small footnote in the bikini’s history if it were not for the timely invention and superior christening skills of a French mechanical engineer turned swimsuit designer, Louis Reard. Just three weeks after Heim unveiled his Atome creation, Reard brought out a remarkably similar swimsuit to be sold along the French Riviera. His swimsuit also contained just two scant pieces of cloth that revealed a woman’s back and navel for the first time in the modern era. Reard named his swimsuit the “bikini,” taking the name from the Bikini Reef, one of a series of islands in the South Pacific where testing on the new atomic bomb was occurring that summer. Historians assume Reard termed his swimsuit the “bikini” because he believed its revealing style would create reactions among people similar to those created by America’s atomic bomb in Japan just one summer earlier. Whether this was his true reason or not, the bikini name stuck, and Reard went down in history as the inventor of the popular two-piece swimsuit. Reard’s bikini was introduced to U.S. markets in 1947, just one year after its debut in France. While consumers were certainly curious about the scandalously small amount of fabric that comprised the bikini, initial sales of the swimsuit were slow. Many Americans were shocked by its scantiness, and the bikini was even outlawed as a form of public attire in many U.S. cities. At most beaches and swimming pools, the bikini is by far the most popular swimsuit style worn today. Of course, the bikini has gone through several style evolutions during its 60-year history, ranging from the outrageous topless monokini of the 1960s to the more modest tankini of recent years.

reviewing the latest reads to appeal to all...
In this brilliantly entertaining and engaging tale, he guides us through a grim teenage period of numerous deadend jobs. He could never have imagined that one day he would be playing to thousands of adoring fans. The book also reveals how as a boy Lee got his first taste of showbiz, living out of a suitcase and accompanying his entertainer father around the smoky, rowdy, unforgiving working-men's club and theatre circuit. The Life of Lee is a story that is like its subject: compelling, touching, charming and, above all, fantastically funny.
In his very first book, Alan tells his life story, (‘oh and what a life’) with his unique twist of natural, observational humour. With his tongue-in-cheek, end of pier humour that made him famous, Alan describes an ordinary life in bursts of technicolour. His journey from awkward schoolboy hiding his man-boobs on the pitch, drinking tea with the dinner ladies and working in a call centre, to becoming one of our best-loved comedians likened to the great Frankie Howard, make his book a guaranteed tickler with a laugh-out-loud gag on every page.

Spanish Driving Licence? comprehensive advice for expats Whilst it is not strictly necessary to exchange your UK Licence for a Spanish one, you may find it more convenient to do so. British and other EU Citizens Any UK driving licences that were issued prior to 1990 are invalid unless they are accompanied by an official translation into Spanish - Any infringement of this law could result in a very heavy fine being awarded, and the inconvenience of having to sort this out with the Guardia Civil and / or the DGT. The minimum age that you are able to hold a driving licence in spain is 18 years old, so any 17 year old holding a UK licence will be unable to drive. Spanish driving laws and regulations previously stated that licence holders were entitled to legally drive on a valid UK, or other EU licence, for a period of no more than six months - after which time they were then required to either: • Leave Spain • Not drive any road vehicle during their stay in spain • Apply for their UK or other EU driving licence to be approved and stamped • Apply for a Spanish driving licence However: As an EU citizen holding an EU type driving licence this is now only 'a recommendation'. The British Consulate also suggests that it is advisable to exchange UK licences for Spanish ones, which are also valid for visits to the UK. In the UK the DVLA will not put a foreign address on a replacement licence, nor will they send one out of the country. Therefore, if a British licence is only registered with Spanish authorities and is lost or stolen, a replacement cannot be obtained from the UK, and Spanish authorities will not be able to replace one they did not issue. Licence Validity & Renewals Those wishing to renew driving licence categories BTP, C1, C1 + E, C, C + E, D1, D1 + E, D and D + E must do so every 5 years up to the age of 65, every 3 years beyond that age. All other categories of licence have a validity of 10 years up to the age of 65, renewable every 5 years beyond that date. Applying for a Spanish driving licence replacement Go to your local provincial traffic headquarters (often based within the police station ) and ask to change your British driving licence for a Spanish one. They will inform you that you must undergo a medical examination (as do Spanish nationals) and give you details of how to proceed...
Take with you: • Your valid UK or EU driving licence • Your NIE certificate • Your Residencia paperwork • A photocopy of both sides of the driving licence id photograph card • Your passport and one photocopy • Two passport photographs This process may vary slightly from town to town , but the above documents should cover all variations. Your new spanish licence is also valid for driving during visits to the UK. Glorious food food
One of our favourite dishes, all products are readily available in Spain and of course a great selection of prawns in all the supermarkets, all year round. A quick and easy dish to prepare and goes great with a nice crisp white wine.
Spaghetti with Tomatoes and Prawns
Ingredients 2 cloves of garlic 1 dried red chilli crushed(optional) 5 tbsp of dry white wine 400g can of plum tomatoes 350g spaghetti 4 tbsp olive oil 200g raw fresh prawns, peeled, deveined, tails left intact Generous handful of flatleaf parsley roughly chopped
Method 1) Cook the spaghetti in plenty of boiling salted water 2) While the pasta is cooking, heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the garlic, parsley and chilli, stirring constantly so they don´t burn. Then add the prawns and cook for one minute, stir in the wine and tomatoes and cook for 2 – 3 minutes. 3) Drain the spaghetti, then add to the prawns and sauce, toss, season to taste and serve immediately. TOP TIP: Easier to cook in a wok rather than large frying pan
Enjoy!

Wine come
with me
Investing in wine There are two major reasons for investing in fine wine: • as an investment in future drinking. Buying young wines which will improve over time. • as a financial investment. Buying wines with the sole intention of reselling them later for a profit. The global demand for fine wine has increased enormously over the last few decades. Wine has been known to outperform the FTSE 100 and the Dow Jones, offering significant returns without the volatility of the stock market. Only a tiny proportion of the world's wines will increase in value over time, although this is growing steadily as global wine interest increases and wine comes to be seen as a reliable investment. Wine Futures The terms “Wine Futures” and “En Primeur” (literally 'in youth') refer to buying wine after it is made, but before it is bottled. Six months or so after vintage, when the wines are still in tank or barrel, tasting samples are made available to wholesale buyers and wine journalists. The buyers place orders based on their assessment of the wines, and sell their 'future' stock on to their customers (although the wine itself is not bottled and shipped for another year or two).
50
The journalists rate the wines and publish their notes, in either print or online media. The race to publish these ratings (particularly for Bordeaux futures / en primeur) is increasingly competitive since the advent of celebrity wine critics, online wine media and wine investment. In the case of Bordeaux En Primeur, the wines are released in several stages or tranches, in which prices are adjusted up or down according to the success of the previous tranche. The first tranche typically attracts the most attention. Wine Investment Buying wine in these ways can be a prudent investment practise. The initial release prices are usually the lowest at which the wines will ever be sold. En Primeur burgundy wine casks
Wine futures are a specialty of the Bordeaux wine market, but is increasingly used for wines from other regions, notably Burgundy, California, the Rhone Valley, Italy and Vintage Port. In Burgundy, buying wine futures can often be the only way to secure wines that are available in very limited quantities (some properties produce as little as 200 cases a year). The finest Burgundies often disappear into private cellars and are rarely, seen on the market again. The Bordeaux 2000 vintage was highly profitable for futures and en primeur investors; the wines were in great demand, but were initially priced too low. Even those who bought at the second or third tranche prices saw the value of their wines rise quickly.
Worth a dabble? then take a look at this list of the world's 5 most expensive wines. The list is based on the average price of a standard bottle (750ml)
1. Henri Jayer Richebourg Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France. $14,395 2. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti RomaneeConti Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France. $11,823 3. Henri Jayer Cros Parantoux, VosneRomanee Premier Cru, France. $5,436 4. Domaine Leflaive Montrachet Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune, France. $5,264 5. Egon Muller-Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, Mosel, Germany $5,247 The most expensive bottle ever bought Three bottles of Châteaux Lafite-Rothschild 1869 were just sold at a Hong Kong auction by Sotheby’s. The hammer price of $232,692 a bottle set a record for the most expensive bottle of wine ever sold at auction. It may well be the most expensive bottle ever sold, though there are no records of private sales.
