Bert Trautmann
Goalkeeping legend, German Paratrooper and now, Spanish resident Bert Trautmann OBE Born 22nd October 1923, Lives in Valencia Spain. Bert Trautmann was a nazi paratrooper who famously played in goal for Manchester City between 1949 and 1964. To many, he is one of the most popular post-war goalkeepers to have ever played in British football, thanks mainly to his heroic exploits in the 1956 FA Cup final – playing for Manchester City he broke his neck after a courageous save but continued playing until the final whistle, and a City victory. Bert Trautmann was a former Hitler Youth devotee and Nazi soldier captured by the British who,
after serving his time as a prisoner of war in Lancashire, went on to become one of Britain’s most popular goalkeepers. Berts story, now just 89 years old, starts with childhood, where he was regarded as the perfect Aryan boy, and then encompasses German soldierhood at the age of 18, how he won two Iron Crosses, how he was taken prisoner by the British in 1945, and how he excelled as a goalkeeper in the German POW football team. This developed into a new career and he signed for Manchester City in 1949. As a POW he started off playing centre half for POW teams across north-west England, only being persuaded to move into goal after one day becoming embroiled in an outfield fight. A star was born and, with Trautmann declining repatriation to Germany, a stint at non-League St Helens prefaced a high-profile move to Manchester City. Manchester boasted a sizeable Jewish community and 20,000 demonstrated against City's new signing before Dr Altmann, the communal Rabbi, appealed for the German player to be offered a chance, reminding everyone that an individual should not be punished for his country's sins. It was only when he played in the infamous 1956 FA Cup final that Bert’s reputation was saved, and

pregnant, he abandoned her and baby Freda shortly after the birth. "Marion didn't have an easy life. I left her with a PoW's bastard daughter and, although I gave her maintenance, it was very little. The most I ever earned at City was £35 a week," Trautmann admits. "But I was terrified of being trapped." Such brutal honesty and acute self-awareness is rare, but he is an unusual man.
Many of his happiest moments arrived in later years when, employed by the German government on a third-world initiative, he lived in Burma, Tanzania, Liberia, Pakistan and Yemen. "Excellent times," he says. "I was teaching people how to be football coaches, but they all taught me a hell of a lot about life, about tolerance and thinking differently." By then Trautmann had already completed an incredible odyssey that swept this one-time Hitler Youth prodigy into active wartime service in Russia and later France. "I volunteered when I was 17," he says. "People say 'why?', but when you are a young boy war seems like an adventure. Then, when you're involved in fighting it's very different, you see all the horrible things that happen, the death, the bodies, the scariness. You can't control yourself. Your whole body is shaking and you're making a mess in your pants."
Captured and escaped from the Russians and then the French resistance, the British finally captured him properly. "When they got me [after he had hurdled a fence leaping straight into an ambush] the first thing they said was: 'Hello Fritz, fancy a cup of tea,'" recalls Trautmann. It was the start of an unlikely love affair. "I feel British in my heart now," he says. "When people ask me about life, I say my education began when I got to England. I learnt about humanity, tolerance and forgiveness." Not to mention that Jews were human, too.
In his private life – Trautmann is happily married to his third wife, Marlis, and living in a modest bungalow on the Spanish coast near Valencia – has not always been exemplary, he remains a peerless ambassador for international reconciliation. Holder of an OBE for his tireless work of improving Anglo-German relations, Trautmann says “ travelling is the best education, it teaches tolerance and understanding. The importance of these cannot be underestimated. "We never, ever, want another world war," stresses the old Luftwaffe paratrooper. "It absolutely must not happen."
Trautmann's personal world turned upside down when a month after the 1956 FA Cup final his six-yearold son John was run over and killed. Although his then wife Margaret bore him two more boys, she never recovered. "Margaret didn't get over John, she had no interest in life anymore," says Trautmann, who, after an unhappy stint managing Stockport – where he was horrified to discover Coronation Street actors influenced the chairman – would eventually Trautmann was one of only 90 walk out on her and into that members of his original 1,000 German government job. "When strong regiment still alive in 1945. she died, it was of a broken heart." Several fellow survivors were left badly maimed. "I kept nothing from Tall, blond and devastatingly “Trautmann’s Journey” the war," he says. "I don't even have handsome, Trautmann caused his avaialable from fair share of emotional grief. After www.amazon.co.uk my Iron Cross any more." getting his first girlfriend, Marion,

Rugby Union: 6 Nations Championship
Victory in every game results in a 'Grand Slam' England hold the record for the number of Grand Slams won with 12, followed by Wales with 10, France with 9, Scotland with 3 and Ireland with 2. Victory by any Home Nation over the other three Home Nations constitutes as a 'Triple Crown'. England hold the record for the number of Triple Crowns won with 23, followed by Wales with 19, Scotland and Ireland both with 10. Although this achievement has long been a feature of the tournament, it was not until 2006 that a physical trophy, commissioned by the Royal Bank of Scotland, was awarded. Meanwhile the last-placed nation at the end of the tournament is said to have won a purely figurative Wooden Spoon. Several individual competitions take place under the umbrella of the Six Nations tournament. The oldest is the Calcutta Cup, which has been running since 1879 and is contested annually between England and Scotland. The Millennium Trophy has been awarded to the winner of the game between England and Ireland with the first presented in 1988. Since 2007, France
10
Fixtures 2013 and Italy have also contested for their own silverware - the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy. It was created for the 200th anniversary to honour the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi who helped unify Italy and was also a French military general. In 1871, England and Scotland played the first rugby union international. After 12 years of occasional friendly matches between the teams, the inaugural Home International Championship, comprising England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales was played in 1883. England won the first series, along with a Triple Crown, and up until 1893 when Wales won and 1894 when Ireland won, only them and Scotland had been crowned champions. Wales' triumphs in 1908 and 1909, although won during the Home Nations era, were the first Grand Slams as they defeated France in both seasons. France officially joined in 1910 having played in four tournaments up to that point with the Championship now referred to as the Five Nations. Scotland were the last team to lift the Five Nations trophy as Italy joined the following year in 2000 and the tournament became known as the Six Nations with England being the first nation to win the Six Nations in 2000.

Valentines Day With February 14th fast approaching, Why do we celebrate this day? Nowadays it is mainly so that we can tell people that we care about them, give and receive cards, and enjoy chocolate and candy. But according to one legend, St. Valentine’s Day is meant for people to remember a brave man, a martyr whose name was Valentine. The Story of St. Valentine The Roman Emperor Claudius II was fighting many wars. He wanted a strong army, but many men did not want to be soldiers. Claudius thought the men wanted to stay home to be with their wives and children instead of leaving to fight wars. Claudius thought of an awful solution to his problem. He decided to cancel all marriages! No one in all of Rome could get married. Claudius thought that if the men couldn’t get married, the men would ignore the women and want to be soldiers. Valentine, who was a priest, believed that people needed to get married. He thought that if they were not married, they would be tempted to sin by living together without being married. So he secretly and illegally married couples anyway! He performed the weddings in secret places, so the Roman soldiers would not find out. But they did find out. Valentine was arrested and brought before the Emperor. The Emperor thought Valentine was a well spoken and wise young man, and encouraged him to stop being a Christian and become a loyal Roman. Valentine would not deny his beliefs, and he refused. He was sent to prison until he could be executed. While he was in prison, he sent out letters to his friends and asked to be prayed for by writing “Remember your Valentine.” Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the year 269 or 270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th in honor of St. Valentine.
Jacopo da Ponte - St Valentine Baptizing St Lucilla. Oil on Canvas
Although it is not known whether this legend is factually true, it is a good story anyway. It is nice to think of someone who believed in marriage and was willing to risk death to do what he believed was right.

With the upcoming Academy Awards due to be held on February 24th at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, we thought we would look at some of the records held and forthcoming predictions. The Academy Awards, informally known as The Oscars, are a set of awards given annually for excellence of cinematic achievements. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards. Organized and overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are given each year at a formal ceremony. The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-GoldwynMayer studio executive Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industry’s image and help mediate labor disputes. The awards itself was later initiated by the Academy as an award "of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry.
The most popular predictions for this year are as follows: The Predicted Best Film Top 9: Beast of the Southern Wild Zero Dark Thirty Amour Argo Life of Pi Les Miserables Lincoln Silver Linings Playbook Django Unchained The Predicted Best Actor Top 5: Bradley Cooper Silver Linings Playbook Daniel Day-Lewis Lincoln Hugh Jackman Les Misérables Joaquin Phoenix The Master Denzel Washington Flight The Predicted Best Actress Top 5: Jessica Chastain Zero Dark Thirty Jennifer Lawrence Silver Linings Playbook Emmanuelle Riva Amour Quvenzhané Wallis Beasts of the Southern Wild Naomi Watts The Impossible

Sierra Nevada
Wanting a change of scenery? Or looking for the ‘ULTIMATE’ Valentine’s Day, why not do something different: visit romantic and scenic Sierra Nevada. Whether it be with your beloved or your friends and family, Sierra Nevada has lots to offer to both the skier and non-skier.
having fun on the rubber rings
Being approximately two and a half hours from the Mojacar area, it is possible to just go on a day trip or for a couple of days and stay in one of the lovely hotels, some of which have that alpine lodge feeling with a roaring log fire accompanied by a hot chocolate or maybe a bottle of Cava!. The season has already begun and goes until around April, depending on the snow fall. It is also worthy of mention that the area is also full of flora and fauna in the spring with other activities on offer, so worth a visit, even if you are not a snow fan. TOP TIPS. Take sun cream, you will be surprised how sunny it gets, also remember your de-icer for the car. It is possible to pre-book you lift passes on line, it saves you having to queue as they can be long. If you have children or for the big kids amongst us, take a few large bin liners, the thick garden type…more of this later! Note that weekends & holidays are extremely busy and it is worth getting there early or ideally the night before or during the week.

If you have an iPhone there is an app, available to download from iTunes store, for weather forecast and snow reports http://m.snow-forecast.com. WHAT CAN I SEE AND DO? Obviously there is skiing, which caters for the complete novice through to the budding Eddie the Eagles out there. Plenty of tuition is available and equipment for hire, but for those of you who do not relish the thought of too much exerison, you can: • Rent a large rubber ring, which you sit in and slide down a slope, great fun. • Go on the ‘Trineo ruso’ a combination of a small roller coaster/bob sledge with twist, turns, small inclines, great for everyone. • Get your bin liner out!, it’s a free activity and very novel!. Find a suitable slope, lay out your bin liner, sit on top and go, go, go!. • Hire a snowmobile. • Go dog sledding. World Snow Day is on the 20.01.13, a fun filled day, with lots of activities going on throughout the day & night including concerts, displays of snowboarding and freestyle skiing & children’s activities. Chill out, at one of the many bars and restaurants, admiring the
spectacular views, soak up the atmosphere and the sun rays (one bar actually has deck chairs on its terrace!), or by night admire the lit up ski run and view the twinkling city lights of nearby Granada. Explore the areas surrounding Sierra Nevada, one such village Trevelez, the highest village in Spain, is full of character and is famous for its delicious, locally cured Jamon. Après-ski at night, what about a disco, there are many of these around (some within the hotels), but they do not start to liven up until around 12am. WHERE TO EAT? RUTA DEL VELETA – Posh nosh here, ideal for a romantic meal. This restaurant is a favourite of Spain’s King Juan Carlos
and Michelin rates this place, nearly achieving the much coveted Michelin star. RESTAURANT LA CARIHUELA – Serves good, fresh fish dishes RESTAURANT TIA MARIA – Great place for lunch, with a real buzzy atmosphere, varied menu at reasonable prices. CROISANTERIA LA GAUFFRE – Super for breakfast, serving freshly baked bread and pastries and of course coffee. BARS – Numerous bars everywhere, check out the back streets and discover quaint bars. The majority of the bars serve a free tapas with an alcoholic drink.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH OUR BRITISH TELLY? The recent move of Channel 5, 5 USA and Fiver from Astra 1N to Astra 2F has given a good indication of what is likely to happen in the summer of this year when more changes will be made, it is more or less certain that all the BBCs/ITVs and main UK public service broadcast channels will relocate to the UK spot beam of the new Astra 2E satellite due to be launched June 2013. This Satellite has two beams, the UK spot beam and a Pan European beam, the latter can be received with smaller parabolic dishes throughout Spain and is likely to be used for Sky pay channels, but reception of the UK spot beam used on Astra 2F and 2E and most likely to be used for all BBCs/ITVs very much depends on your location in Spain. For instance viewers in the northern Costa Blanca can receive these signals with a 1 metre dish, further
down the coast say Torrevieja a 1.2 metre dish is required, viewers in the Mojacar area will need a 1.8 metre, and viewers on the Costa Del Sol are unlikely to receive the UK spot beam even on a huge 3 metre dish! If you have lost Channel 5 (Not Channel 5 HD which is part of the Sky package) then your dish size will not be big enough. If you can live without Channel 5, then our advice is to do nothing for the moment as we still have several months before there are any further major changes, and several options will be available for those not wanting to install a huge satellite dish. by Michael Coard (MD of Nortons, Orihuela Costa) At present, if you want channel 5 and you have internet, call into GSF Communications near Mojacar Estates who have a solution for full SKY packages at only 17â‚Ź per month.

THEGOLFPAGE ...your regular insight into Spains best and most played golf courses including tournements and news this issue
Club de Campo del Mediterráneo
Borriol, Castellón.
An 18 hole layout that has done much to enhance the growing reputation of architect Ramón Espinosa. It is a gem of a course located in a wide valley among mountains 6 km. away from the Mediterranean sea, and the subtly placed hazards make it tougher than you might think at first sight, although not to the point of scaring off the lesser players. The fairway and green-side bunkers are cleverly located and visible enough to help your game tactics. The course is surrounded by a variety of trees like olive trees, pine trees and carob trees. A few isolated trees call for elaborate shots, moving the ball both ways, and small ponds are in play on seven holes, thus completing a highly varied panoply of hazards. The greens, prepared at US Tour speeds (this is the home course of Sergio Garcia) are high-quality putting surfaces which are tough to read and require an excellent touch. An intelligent and honest course, this is a golfing arena for everyone. Being well-balanced and well-cared for, it is a course well worth recommending for spending a great day out.
Sergio Garcia with his trophy This course has hosted several national and international tournaments, at both amateur and professional levels. Qualifying Tournaments for the PGA Tour have also been played here. Since December 2003, the 4 Tours tournament is played here, with the 32 best Spanish players from the European Tour, Senior Tour, Challenge Tour and Peugeot Tour, and the successful and well-known Castello Masters. The Castelló Masters is a European Tour golf tournament that was held for the first time in October 2008, taking the slot formerly used by the Mallorca Classic. The event is held at the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo in Castellón, Spain. The inaugural event was won by Sergio García, who also happened to be the tournament host, having grown up playing golf on the course where his father is the club professional. García finished on a 20-under-par total of 264, winning by a margin of three strokes over Peter Hedblom. In 2010, 17 year old Italian Matteo Manassero became the youngest ever winner on the European Tour when he triumphed by 4 strokes over Ignacio Garrido.

Carnival letting your hair down
Come to Spain and enjoy the carnival - a fun festival that is celebrated in many places all over Spain. Nearly everything is allowed on these winter days before Lent, the period leading up to Easter. Wild partying, humour, parodies and joy fill the streets of the towns and cities in Spain. Carnival is the time to watch wonderful costumes and parades but also the opportunity for groups of friends to put on fancy dress and party all night! You will see groups of old school friends all dressed in the same costumes i.e. cowboys, and all be dancing and listening to the music that is put on in various towns in Spain Carnivals not be missed, because they are so original and spectacular, are those of Cadiz, in Andalusia, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, both internationally renowned and declared of International Tourist Interest. In the Canary Islands you can also find the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is one of the oldest festivals in the capital of the island of Gran Canaria (it dates back to the 16th century). Visitors especially love the Gala de la Reina (Queen's Parade), typical humorous groups and songs, body paint and costumes, and the Gran Cabalgata
(Great Parade), where more than 200,000 people gather every year. This festival is just as well known as the popular one in Maspalomas (in the south of the island). The hallmarks of the Cadiz carnival are the typical songs and ditties sung by a variety of music bands: these songs are full of irony and social criticism and are composed by the various popular clubs and associations that take part in the festivities. Why not take a walk around the centre of town and let yourself be swept up in the atmosphere of fun and abandon? Don't forget the parade on the Sunday known as the "domingo de Piñata", with plenty of high spirits and good humour to delight both young and old. There are many other Carnival festivities in Spain, almost all of them original and all of them guaranteeing generous doses of fun, humour, creativity and group participation. Why not see for yourself?
Aguilas The nearest and one of the best can be found in Aguilas from 8th to the 17th February. The carnival parade parade make it´s way down the main starts at 5pm on the last day parade, street in Aguilas. and it did not finish coming down the road until 1am. Fireworks often end and Parking is easy and free as you enter close the carnival. on the E15 into Águilas, with only a 5 minute walk to the carnival route. for more info visit: ”just follow the picnic baskets”. www.carnavaldeaguilas.org

Oceanografic City of Arts and Sciences
The Oceanogràfic of the City of Arts and Sciences is the largest aquarium in Europe and contains representatives of the world’s main marine ecosystems. Each building is identified with the following aquatic environments: the Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, the Antarctic, the Arctic, Islands, and the Red Sea, as well as the Dolphinarium with 24 million litres of water and a depth of 10.5 metres. The Underwater Restaurant and the Access Building which welcomes visitors stand out because of their spectacular roofs designed by Félix Candela. During their route through the various installations, visitors can get to know at first hand the behaviour and way of life of over 45,000 individuals of 500 different species: dolphins, belugas, walruses, sea lions, seals, penguins, turtles, sharks, rays, sawfish, jellyfish, starfish, sea urchins, and crustaceans of all kin..., as well as wetland bird species such as those inhabiting the Albufera de Valencia and tropical mangrove swamps. Opened on the 14 th February 2003, the largest marine complex in the whole of
Europe is shown to the world as a unique space in the form of a journey through the seas and oceans of our planet to show visitors its most outstanding marine ecosystems. Its avant-garde architecture, the arrangement of the various aquariums, and its scientific, leisure, and educational vocation make the marine world more accessible to visitors and make them aware of the need for protecting its fauna and flora. • Surface area of 110,000 square metres. • One of the largest dolphinariums in the world with 26 million cubic metres of water and a depth of 10.5 metres. • 6,761 square metres of methacrylate panels of up to 33 centimetres thick. • 150,000 cubic metres of concrete and 15,000 tons of steel. • Over 25 kilometres of piping with diameters ranging from 1.4 centimetres to 1.3 metres.

Underwater Restaurant, located in the centre of the complex, is the most emblematic building of the Oceanogràfic owing to its unique roof designed by Felix Candela. The Battle of
Rorke’s Drift The Battle of Rorke's Drift, Wednesday 22nd to Thursday 23 January, 1879, saw some 150 soldiers defend a supply station against some 4000+ Zulus.
there were only 104 men who were fit enough to fight. The command of the post had passed to Lieutenant Chard of the Royal Engineers, when Major Henry
In January 1879 the British invaded KwaZulu in South Africa, without the sanction of the Home Government, in a war brought about by the misguided policy of "Confederating" Southern Africa under the direction of the GovernorGeneral Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere. The fiercely indepedent AmaZulu people refused to lay down their arms and accept British rule over the Sovereign Kingdom. The British General Officer Commanding, Lord Chelmsford, despite having abundant military intelligence on the AmaZulu, had a misconceived idea of the fighting prowess of his enemy. The result was that on 22nd January, a British force of seventeen hundred strong, was attacked and only some four hundred men, of whom only some eighty Europeans, survived at a place called Isandhlwana. Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande commanded an impi, the Undi 'corps' of 4,500. His men had played little part in the action at Isandhlwana, but goaded on by his men, and despite the orders of his brother, King Cetshwayo kaMpande, not to cross the Buffalo River into Natal, he chose to attack the British supply base close to a river crossing known as Rorke's Drift, which the AmaZulu called KwaJimu. The post was established in a trading store-cum-mission station that consisted of a dwelling house and a chapel, both sturdily built of stone. The house was doing temporary duty as a field hospital, the chapel was full of stores and

Lieutenant chard Spalding of the 104th Regiment left on the morning of the 22nd January. Commanding a company-strength was Lieutenant Bromhead of the 24th Regiment. James Langley Dalton, a volunteer serving as an Acting Assistant Commissary and a former Staff Sergeant, ordered the construction of barricades connecting the two buildings with sacks of corn, and an inner barricade with biscuit boxes. When the Zulus attacked, wielding their short stabbing assegais, they were unable to reach the men behind the barricades and they were blasted by rifle fire at point blank range. Most of those who did mount the breastwork were repulsed by the bayonets of the defenders. Some of the Zulus were armed with rifles, purchased from unscrupulous traders, but they were not trained marksmen and the British soldiers were able to pick them off at long range.
After a number of unsuccessful attacks the Zulus set fire to the hospital, burst in and began to spear the patients. A private named Alfred Henry Hook, a Gloucestershire man, kept them at bay with his bayonet while his friend John Williams hacked holes in the wall separating one room from another and dragged the patients through one by one, the last man had dislocated his knee. Williams had to break the other to get him out of a window and into the yard where the barricades offered some protection.
Fighting went on all night in the fitful glare from the blazing hospital as the Zulus made charge after charge on the barricades. Both sides fought with desperate courage. A patient from the hospital, a Swiss born adventurer Christian Ferdnand Schiess, stabbed three Zulus in quick succession after he had clambered over the breastwork. In the yard Surgeon James Henry Reynolds tended to the wounded, oblivious to the life and death struggle going on all around him. Those too badly hurt to shoot propped themselves up as best they could and reloaded the guns, and re-supplied ammunition to those who were still on their feet. When dawn came at last, the Zulus drew off taking their wounded with them and leaving at least 351 dead around the barricades. Later Lord Chelmsford arrived on the scene with a column of British Soldiers. Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead were both awarded the Victoria Cross, as were the redoubtable privates Alfred Hook, Frederick Hitch, Robert Jones, William Jones, Corporal Allen, James Langley Dalton and Pte. John Williams. Surgeon Reynolds got the Cross for tending the wounded under fire; and the Swiss volunteer Christian

Stanley Baker, Jack Hawkins and James Booth. Although Director Cy Endfield consulted with a Zulu tribal historian for information from Zulu oral tradition about the attack, a number of historical inaccuracies in the film have been noted of which:
In 1964 this story was made into a film “Zulu” starring Michael Caine,
The song "Men of Harlech", which features prominently as the
regimental song actually wasn’t during battle, the song was "The Warwickshire Lad" and there was no "battlefield singing contest" between the British and the Zulus. The film ends with another narration by Richard Burton, listing the defenders who received the Victoria Cross, including Private Hook.

New Year...New Lifestyle. Feeling the squeeze after all the Holiday indulgence?....and I don't mean in your wallet! Overindulged on mince pies, buffets, tins of chocolates and other Christmas goodies, your New Years resolution is to start a new diet and shed those extra pounds? Here are a few handy tips to help you kick-start your plan and beat the post Christmas bulge: First of all, don't beat yourself up too much, even our "size zero" friends will have gained a few unwanted pounds (unless they locked themselves in a room with no access to the outside world for 2 weeks!). Next job is a "deep cleansing" and no I am not suggesting you book yourself in for a session of colonic irrigation! Clean out your fridge and pantry and rid yourself of the naughty chocolates lurking in the cupboard, calorie filled mince pies hanging around in the fridge and fat laden sausage rolls in the freezer. Don't leave yourself open to any temptation. Get yourself down to your local market and stock up with the array of the fresh seasonal vegetables available, make some tasty, warming soups and stews, low in calories and helps toward your "five a day". Another way to help tone up those wobbly thighs is to make the most of our wonderful climate and take yourself off for a walk, whether it's on the beach or in the campo, I guarantee you will feel energised and a tad pleased with yourself when you get home. Try to make habit of getting out in the fresh air and taking some moderate exercise, your body and heart will thank you for it and you will notice your waistband getting looser by the day. If you are really making a serious effort to get fit in 2013, consider a personal trainer, now this may sound like a luxury of the rich and famous, but for as little as 10â‚Ź per hour you can hire someone to train with you, design a workable exercise programme and set realistic achievable goals. Sometimes it just helps to have someone to give you encouragement. Stay away from faddy diets, they rarely work and even if you lose a few
pounds initially, they will creep back on eventually (unless hot water, maple syrup and chilli powder is your idea of heaven, apparently Beyonce swears by it!) Lower your calorie intake to a sensible level, stay away from sugary, fizzy drinks and limit your intake of refined carbohydrates (white rice, pasta, white bread, crisps etc) and opt instead for brown or whole-wheat varieties, crispbreads or oatcakes. Hit the bottle! and before you rush to the drinks cabinet to finish off all that left over booze, I am talking about H2O! Try to drink plenty of water throughout the day, I find that buying small bottles and keeping one with me at all times helps me monitor how much I am drinking. On the subject of drinking, cutting out the booze during the week and enjoying a few glasses over the weekend can save you 200 calories or more each day. Breakfast like a King (or Queen), you've heard it before and I was always a sceptic, I couldn't understand how adding more calories to my daily intake could actually help me shed the pounds but eating a nutritious breakfast kick starts your metabolism, gets your digestive system working and helps burn off calories consumed later in the day. It also staves off those mid morning "snack attacks"! If you are short of time in the morning, prepare a bowl of fresh fruit or Bircher Muesli made with zero fat yoghurt the evening before. Finally, banish the word "diet" from your vocabulary, think of it instead as treating your body with respect, embarking on living a longer and healthier life....and of course fitting comfortably into that favourite pair of jeans! Valentines
Box
FOR HER – Nothing says Valentines Day quite like some chocolates. Although the Spanish don’t celebrate valentines day, you can still find themed boxes of goodies from Iceland or other local supermarkets that cater for the british taste.
FOR HER – why not treat the both of you to some sexy underwear? Try to keep in tradition with the special day by making it red but hey, you men will know what she likes...and what you like! FOR HER – Say it with flowers. More traditionally, say it with a dozen red roses. You can visit your local flower shop for some off the shelf but come on guys, get there early, order a special bouquet and add that personal touch.
FOR YOU BOTH – A romantic meal out is always a great gesture and with so many beautiful settings here in Spain, wht not take advantage of local promotions or better still, taylor your dinner by asking your restaurant to let you decorate your table beforehand.
FOR YOU BOTH – If the budget allows it, a very special gift is jewellery. Anything goes here but for that speciall touch, get some matching friendship rings or have an inscription put on your gift to your loved one.

The Sentinel by Mark Oldfield £9.99/£7.99 (non UK)
Alhambra by Michael Jacobs £12.99 with FREE UK shipping
Spanish Cooking by Miguel Maestre £11.99 with FREE UK shipping
The Sentinel is the first in an ambitious and enthralling trilogy of novels that explores the Spanish Civil War's savage legacy. Centre stage is the figure of Leopoldo Guzman, head of the Brigada Especial - Franco's secret police. Guzman is one of the more remarkable creations of modern fiction. A monster and an enigma who nevertheless engages the sympathy of the reader. He is also a man who vanishes from history in the winter of 1953... Until Galindez unearths his tracks.
The Alhambra palace complex is imposingly situated above the town of Granada. It is the most important surviving medieval Islamic palace in the world. Michael Jacobs takes a fresh look at this magical palacefortress, built by the Muslim Nasrid rulers and the potent mythology that has grown up around it. The heart of the book is a tour of the palace and the adjoining gardens of the Generalife. The final chapter assesses the literature, art and architecture inspired by this legendary place.
Miguel Maestre’s new simply titled book ' Spanish Cooking' is full of recipes, beautiful food photography and tastes from his life in Spain growing up in the South Eastern province of Murcia. Maestre now a celebrity chef in Australia, shares recipes and anecdotes, full of Spanish flare.

Need a new Passport? comprehensive advice for expats Cost of a British passport overseas The cost of British passports is higher if you apply at a British mission overseas, compared to the fees charged in the United Kingdom. The Home Office is responsible for issuing passports in the United Kingdom, while the Foreign Office is responsible for issuing passports outside the United Kingdom.
Many British missions will need originals of proof of citizenship but will normally accept copies of proof of identity documentation.
In the UK, an adult 32 page passport will cost £81.25 Through the post office check and send service. Here in Spain through the British Consulate, this goes up to €196 for the passport and up to €26 for it to be couriered from the British Embassy in Madrid
• ALWAYS use a secure courier to send and receive documents, and include a pre-paid envelope for return of documents. Never use regular post. • If you must send away an original document, make multiple copies beforehand and get them certified by a solicitor or notary. • DON'T send more documentation than is necessary.
Countersignatures The need for a countersignature has caused problems for many British expatriates newly arrived in their countries of residence. The application form requests that a countersignature be obtained from a person in that country who has known you for 2 years or more. The problem is that most of those who have spent less than 2 years in that country will not be able to find any qualified person. • The U.K. Passport Service states that countersignatures are not required for straightforward renewal and there is good evidence that despite what the forms say, this is also the case in British missions overseas. If your appearance hasn't changed greatly, then you don't need a countersignature. • Some people have sent the forms back to the United Kingdom to get a U.K. person to countersign. • Others have had the local countersignature strike out the 2 years and replace it with the correct period of time (such as 9 months). If a passport is needed urgently, the third option is best. All the evidence suggests that all three of these methods have been accepted. First passport applicants The application forms demand that applicants for a first British passport provide the passport on which they entered that country. Clearly, in a lot of instances, this will be unavailable. If that is the case, just explain the circumstances
For peace of mind you can use a check and send service here in Spain and we recommend Offex, they will do all the work for you, checking all your forms & liaising with the foreign consulates, returning your Passport direct to you for €19 + the cost of the Passport. Visit www.offexspain.com for more information on this service. The agent on Mojacar Playa is: Total Entertainment - 950 615 596.

First passport applicants do need to provide some fairly good proof of identification, especially if applying as an adult. In particular, you should usually send a copy of the ID page of your foreign passport and driving licence (if you have them). Wine
come

Cava is the Spanish sparkling wine used at most celebrations in Spain. It may be white or Rose and most Cava´s are produced in Catalonia in Spain in the Penedes area. The Spanish village of Sant Sadurni d´Anoia being the home to the two major producers Codorniu and Freixenet. In the past cava was referred to as Spanish Champagne but is no longer permitted under European Union Law since champagne has Protected Geographical Status and Spain entered the EU in 1986. Today it is described as “quality sparkling wine produced in a designated region” The Catalan word cava means cave or cellar as caves were used in the early days for production of cava. Catalan winemakers officially adopted the term in 1970 to distinguish their product from French champagne. Cava is an important part of Catalan and Spanish family tradition and is often consumed at celebrations like baptisms, marriages, banquets, dinners and parties. At New Years Eve in most Spanish and ex pat bars and restaurants you will more than likely be offered 12 grapes and a glass of cava to celebrate the New Year.
46
Spanish sparkling wine was first made as early as 1851, although the roots of the cava industry can be traced back to Josep Raventós's travels through Europe in the 1860s, where he was promoting the still wines of the Codorníu Winery. His visits to Champagne sparked an interest in the potential of a Spanish wine made using the same traditional method. He created his first sparkler in 1872, after the vineyards of Penedès were devastated by the phylloxera plague, and the predominantly red vines were being replaced by large numbers of vines producing white grapes.
According to Spanish law, cava may be produced in eight wine regions: Aragon, the Basque Country, Castile and León, Catalonia, Extremadura, Navarra, Rioja or the Valencian Community. The Penedès is located in Catalonia, and there is only one Castilian producer, in the town of Aranda de Duero.

ARGENTINIAN GRILL RESTAURANTE LIVE FLAMENCO EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT
Peel large sections of peel from your clementines, lemon and lime using a speed peeler. Put the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the pieces of peel and squeeze in the clementine juice. Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaves and about 10 to 12 gratings of nutmeg. Throw in your halved vanilla pod and stir in just enough red wine to cover the sugar. Let this simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved into the red wine and then bring to the boil. Keep on a rolling boil for about 4 to 5 minutes, or until you’ve got a beautiful thick syrup. The reason I’m doing this first is to create a wonderful flavour base by really getting the sugar and spices to infuse and blend well with the wine. It’s important to do make a syrup base first because it needs to be quite hot, and if you do this with both bottles of wine in there you’ll burn off the alcohol.
Mojacar’s best Argentinian restaurant El Gaucho is part of Tomas’s small complex next to his supermarket. With a beautiful terrace looking to the sea and a small intimate restaurant this lovely restaurant is the place for great Argentinian steaks, salads and pizzas on Mojacar Playa. There is a barbecue on the terrace for that great tasting flavour for all our steaks and meats in the Summer months, why not come along and sample our wonderful cuisine. There are many Argentinian Restaurants in this area but if you eat here you will save at least 30%
When your syrup is ready turn the heat down to low and add your star anise and both bottles of wine. Gently heat the wine and after around 5 minutes, when it’s warm and delicious, ladle it into glasses and serve.

Strictly homemade pastas, shoulder of lamb & varied seafood to mention but a few, are some of the delightful items on our menu. Let us not forget our popular & exquisite desserts, which must be tasted to be believed. As well as our A La Carte menu we cook have a fantastic pizza selection! All our ingredients come from Italy and are baked fresh in a traditional stone oven that ensures the result is always at the height of the best Italian pizza. All of these reflect our dedication to an unforgetable experience here at Ottocento. Marco and the staff of OTTOCENTO will do everything possible so that your visit will be an unforgetable experience!
