Emotional Overeating Emotional Overeating Awareness Month Awareness Month
Emotional Overeating Awareness Month provides the opportunity to raise consciousness about the dangers posed by emotional overeating and suggests healthy ways people can cope with stress, negativity, and other negative feelings.
Food feeds the soul. It feeds the spirit. It brings us joy. Sometimes, it even fills the holes in our lives. And for many women, food is one of the best, although temporary, solutions to feeling bad. Even when we are making steps to eat healthier, we sometimes get stressed, get into a “situation”, feel low and turn to our favorite buttery, sugary, creamy, fatty foods to comfort us. We might feel bad about eating after we are done but in that moment, food soothes our emotions in a way that little else does.
Why does food make us happy?
Eating comfort foods (e.g., high calorie foods) releases feel-good hormones that stimulate the part of our brain responsible for joy.
Why do women get angry when we're hungry?
The brain needs fuel (e.g., nutrients/food) to regulate emotions, and anger is the emotion people have the most difficulty regulating. When there is a long gap between meals, the body's blood sugar level drops. This further leads to the release of a number of hormones, such as the stress hormone (cortisol) and the fight or flight hormone (adrenaline) in the body.

Tips to Reduce Emotional Eating
1. Reduce your stress!
2. Have a hunger reality check (ask yourself, “Am I really hungry”?)
3. Get support (talk/vent to friends or a counselor in place of snacking)
4. Fight boredom (engage in a positive activity. Exercise is great for stress reduction)
5. Take away temptation (remove the high calorie snacks from your home or office)
6. Don't deprive yourself! (treat yourself from time to time, not daily)
7. Snack healthy (fruits and veggies are great snacks)
