The UNC Charlotte Language Training Institute is one of the largest intensive English programs in the Carolinas. Language learners seeking skills to succeed at UNC Charlotte start their journey here.

The English Language Training Institute, a unit of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Office of International Programs, prepares English language learners to be successful members of the U.S. academic community while promoting intercultural understanding and a global perspective.


ELTI students can apply for conditional admission to UNC Charlotte.

CONDITIONAL ADMISSION TO UNC CHARLOTTE

- Twenty hours of classroom instruction per week

Students who are academically admissible to undergraduate

- Three semester start dates: fall, spring, summer

test scores, may apply for English conditional admission status.

- Bridge program combining English and University courses


h English INTERNATIONAL INSTRUCTOR LANGUAGE SUPPORT PROGRAM International teaching assistants (ITAs), visiting scholars, and international graduate students are supported by the ELTI. INTERNATIONAL TEACHING ASSISTANTS ITAs are assessed for language and instructional readiness skills before beginning their teaching assignments and attend a support course as appropriate. VISITING SCHOLARS UNC Charlotte visiting scholars are invited to attend a language support course to help develop spoken English skills as well as to share their experiences with fellow scholars. GRADUATE STUDENTS Graduate students at UNC Charlotte can take advantage of a six-week spoken English support course focused on improving their spoken comprehensibility and pronunciation.
