The English Language Training Institute, a unit of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Office of International Programs, prepares English language learners to be successful members of the U.S. academic community while promoting intercultural understanding and a global perspective.
At ELTI, it’s as much about the journey as it is the destination.

The English Language Training Institute provides students and visiting scholars with all the tools for success, including language and cultural awareness.
INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM
ELTI’s intensive English program prepares international undergraduate and graduate students for academic study at UNC Charlotte or other U.S. institutions of higher learning.
CURRICULUM AND SCHEDULE
- Academic English preparation
- U.S. and higher education cultural competency
- 18 hours of instruction per week
- Six levels of instruction in three areas: Reading/Writing, Academic Language, and Listening/Speaking
- Three semester start dates: fall, spring, summer
- Plus One Program offers the chance to take University courses while studying English

CONDITIONAL ADMISSION TO UNC CHARLOTTE
Students who are academically admissible to undergraduate programs are able to meet English proficiency requirements without additional testing upon successful completion of ELTI.

INTERNATIONAL INSTRUCTOR LANGUAGE SUPPORT PROGRAM
International teaching assistants (ITAs), visiting scholars, and international graduate students are supported by the ELTI.
INTERNATIONAL TEACHING ASSISTANTS
ITAs are assessed for language and instructional readiness skills before beginning their teaching assignments and attend a support course as appropriate.
