Featured Event Triveni Dance Video and International Festival Kickoff Friday, November 19, 2021 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. | Popp Martin Student Union Norm’s Join the Office of International Programs and the Triveni Indian Students Association for a video prelude to the return of the International Festival in fall 2022. We will have balloons and candy to celebrate.

The International Festival is held in the fall semester and is centered around booths arranged in a colorful marketplace style representing the cultures of over 50 nations.Throughout the day participants can explore food, music, and dance performances from around the world. Charlotte community members and UNC Charlotte student organizations proudly showcase traditional costumes, traditions, and customs.

Lunch at SoVi: Cantonese Pork Bao Buns 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. | SoVi The Office of International Programs in collaboration with UNC Charlotte Dining Services invites you to explore Chinese cuisine for lunch at SoVi. Traditional Cantonese pork bao buns with hoisin and pickle cucumbers will be served at the Wok. Cantonese pork bao buns, popularized by Zhuge Liang a legendary military strategist, originated in China’s Three Kingdoms period or the third century.

Today, Cantonese pork bao buns are found in local Chinese bakeries, homes, and variations are found all over the world. Popular fillings include pork, pickled vegetables, beef, mushrooms, and chocolate to name a few.

World101 Summit (AASCU) 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. | Virtual Event Please join the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) for the American Democracy Project’s (ADP) World101 Summit presentation.

According to AASCU, The American Democracy Project (ADP) is a network of 296 state colleges and universities focused on public higher education’s role in preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens for our democracy. ADP’s goal is to produce college and university graduates who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and experiences they need to be informed, engaged members of their communities.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program Application Information Session 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Virtual Event Explore the Fulbright U.S. Student Program to learn more about grants and opportunities available for students and young professionals in international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 2,000 grants annually in all fields of study and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.

Join Brad Sekulich, Director of the Office of Education Abroad, UNC Charlotte’s Student Fulbright Program Advisor, for a virtual information session that will provide an introduction to the Fulbright application process, timeline, and guidance on how to prepare a more competitive application packet.

Film Screening: Far East Deep South 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Fretwell 210 Join the UNC Charlotte Chinese Undergraduate Student Association for a screening and discussion of the award winning documentary Far East Deep South.

Far East Deep South explores the seldom-told history of Chinese immigrants living in the American South during the late 1800s to mid-1900s through the eyes of Charles Chiu and his family as they travel from California to Mississippi to find answers about his father, K.C. Lou. The film provides a window into the lives of the Chinese in the South and the discrimination they faced in the midst of segregation.

The film not only highlights the struggles and perseverance of the Chinese, but explores the racial dynamics between the white, Black and Chinese communities and the added challenge of exclusionary immigration policies, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act, many families faced at that time.

Tuesday | November 16 TedXCraverRoad Countdown 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | CHHS 128 Join Erik Byker, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Reading and Elementary Education Department at UNC Charlotte, a panel of UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff, and international experts to discuss ways to connect Sustainable Development Goals in taking action on the fight for global climate change.

The panel will examine the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and discuss presentations from all disciplines via the TedxCraverRoad Countdown program. Presenters will highlight local and global efforts on how to address and take action on climate change as well as educate and connect our UNC Charlotte campus to issues in our global community. This year, the TedX Countdown includes a special focus on local solutions, methane, and oceans.

Lunch at Crown Commons: Moroccan Harira Soup with Lamb 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. | Popp Martin Student Union Crown Commons The Office of International Programs in collaboration with UNC Charlotte Dining Services invites you to explore Moroccan cuisine for lunch at Crown Commons in the Popp Martin Student Union. Traditional Moroccan harira soup with lamb will be served for you to enjoy.

According to Culture Trip, an online travel website, “Harira is a staple food eaten traditionally during the month of Ramadan, when the tomato-based soup is served with a side of dates and a honey-soaked sweet treat known as chebakya following a day of fasting. Filled with lentils and vermicelli noodles or rice to thicken the mixture, as well as chickpeas and a blend of fresh herbs and spices, harira is the national soup of Morocco.”

Upward Mobility in Collective Wisdom: A Discussion on Chinese Leadership Culture 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. | Virtual Event Join Yongling Gorke, Ph.D., Assistant Director of International Education Initiatives in the Office of International Programs, for an interactive presentation on China. Participants will have the opportunity to broaden their international understanding of China’s unique leadership culture, discuss China’s culture and history, and draw connections between Chinese traditional values and their demonstration in modern leadership.

Film Screening: Victoria 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. | COED 419 Join Jasmin Wagner, Instructor of German in the Language and Culture Studies Department, for the film screening of Victoria. Victoria, the Best Fiction Film at the 2015 German Film Awards and nominee for Best Sound Design,“is undeniably impressive as the single take production is described as a kinetic, frenetic, sense-swamping rollercoaster ride.” Victoria, directed by Sebastian Schipper, “follows the eponymous Victoria, a Spanish party girl looking for thrills who hits the town with four Berlin locals. But their night of partying takes a wrong turn and they end up taking part in a bank robbery,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

India’s Rhythm: Call and Response Between Tarana and Pallavi 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. | Rowe 206 Join the Department of Dance for an indoor performance featuring guest performers Setu Patel and Ramma Manjrekar. The performances will focus on the variety of percussive dance traditions in India. Setu Patel and Ramma Manjrekar will showcase two forms of dance, Kathak and Odissi. According to Katha Dance Theatre, “is one of six Indian classical dance forms originating within Hinndu temples as a storytelling device for portraying the epic tales from Hindu scriptures.” Odissi emphasizes sinuous postures and is enlivened by a variety of elevation dn jumps.

Patel, a New Jersey based Odissi enthusiast, began her journey by participating in local and national competitions in New Jersey under the guidance of choreographer Smita (Miki) Patel, founder of India Performing Arts Center. At the age of 32, she was drawn to the mystery within the movement and shapes created by Odissi dance and has since committed herself to understanding its secrets which led her to travel to India in 2009 to study in Orissa with the renowned Sujata Mohapatra, daughter-in-law of Kelucharan Mohapatra, eventually returned to New York to continue training and pursuing her passion for Dance.

Manjrekar, a North Carolina based dancer, co-founded Taurya, a dance program that is dedicated to imparting formal training in Kathak to interested students and promoting the art forms of music, dance and theatre n the United States. Manjrekar has worked with accomplished visiting artists from India, conducted workops, seminars and lecture demonstrations of well-known Kathak gurus and connoisseurs, and successfully duced and choreographed various dance and theater productions.

Know Before You Go: Social Justice and Study Abroad 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. | Virtual Event Join the Office of International Programs’ Office of Education Abroad, in collaboration with Tyris Gillis, Assistant Director in the Identity, Equity, and Engagement Office, for an interactive workshop focused on social justice and studying abroad. As the third segment of the Know Before You Go series, the workshop will discuss ways in which studying abroad can be a transformative tool for developing critical self-reflection, empathy, and social change.

Capoeira: A Symbol of Resistance 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. | Robinson Hall Studio 115 Join the UNC Charlotte Department of Dance for an energetic performance of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art form, described in the Encyclopedia Britannica, “not as a dance but as a sport in which participants-historically perform aerial somersaults and pass within a hair’s breadth of each others knees, head, or stomach. In current practice, two opponents face each other within the roda - a circle of capoeiristas (practitioners of capoeira) - emulating in a stylized manner the strikes and parries of combat, in time with the rhythms of a small musical ensemble.”

Guest performer, Mestre Zumbi, holding the highest rank, Mestre, in Capoeira with over 25 years of experience is from the International Capoeira School. Mestre Zumbi “began training Capoeira at the age of nine in his native home of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil” and has extensive experience teaching and performing in Brazil and the United States, according to Princeton Capoeira. For this event, Mestre Zumbi will share the martial arts form and history of Capoeira with students, faculty and staff while providing the historical and cultural contextualization of the form and practice coming from the descendants of enslaved Africans in present day Brazil.

UNC Charlotte Phi Beta Delta Mu Chapter: Annual Meeting and Induction Ceremony 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. | * By Invitation Only The Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars has as its main purpose the recognition of the international education experience, related academic scholarship, and achievement. It also serves as a means for encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and networking among faculty and students involved in international endeavors. UNC Charlotte’s Mu Chapter inducts qualified students, faculty, and staff at its annual member meeting in November and recognizes with honorary membership an individual or organization who has contributed to the internationalization of the Charlotte community. Bringing Iranian Music to the Concert Stage 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. | Virtual Event The Iranian Student Organization welcomes Dr. Lily Afshar, D.M., Professor of Guitar from the University of Memphis. Participants will learn about classical guitar and Iranian music. Dr. Afshar’s will discuss her journey and showcase performances on a solo guitar.

Dr. Afshar is the first woman in the world to receive a Doctorate of Music in classical guitar and has degrees from Florida State University, a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Music from the Boston Conservatory. She received three Diplomas of Merit from the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy and has published multilingual articles on Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Goya. She is the author of “Five Popular Persian Ballads” and has recorded seven CDs.

Global Engagement Scholars Program (GESP) Information Session 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. | CHHS 207 Join Joe Hoff, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Global Education and Engagement, a unit within the Office of International Programs, for an informational session on the benefits of joining the GESP at UNC Charlotte. Employers are looking for graduates who have special skills that demonstrate that they are prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. Such skills include the ability to work in multicultural teams and in diverse contexts. GESP supports students’ structured connections in the UNC Charlotte and Charlotte international community via participation in globally focused curricular, co-curricular, and engagement experiences.
