Welcome 2021
There has never been a better time to get outside and experience national parks, be with loved ones, and appreciate the joy of travel. At Under Canvas, we’re dedicated to helping you connect to the great outdoors, and to each other, in a fun, safe, and naturally distanced way. From new locations and camp renovations to morning lattes, dog-friendly amenities, and partnerships with your favorite lifestyle brands, we have much to share with you this year. We’re excited to introduce two incredible new camps, bringing our total to nine. Under Canvas Lake Powell–Grand Staircase in southern Utah is a great base for exploring and immersing yourself in the desert Southwest. Under Canvas Acadia in Maine features an amazing waterfront location and access to the national park known as the “Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast.” We’ve also invested significantly across our existing camps, unveiling new tents and destination-inspired West Elm furnishings, and added curated adventure programming and enriched food and beverage offerings. These enhancements are designed to elevate your stay, comfortably connect you with nature, and inspire an even greater appreciation for our environment and planet. We look forward to hosting you and stepping Outside Together.

Inspired by the African safari experience, our immersive outdoor accommodations embrace their natural surroundings while featuring indoor luxuries. Uniquely bridging the gap between travel and the outdoors, it is our intention to allow everyone to discover their outdoor self in comfort and style. We believe that nature is the best architect, access to the outdoors is not a privilege but a right, and unplugging to recharge is essential for our health and well-being. Under Canvas began in 2012 with a camp in West Yellowstone dedicated to connecting
guests to the outdoors and to each other through experiences in nature. It has since grown to nine luxury glamping locations and customized pop-up glamping experiences and has become a leader in upscale, outdoor hospitality. New to the Under
Canvas portfolio for the 2021 season is our first camp in coastal New England, Under Canvas Acadia; and Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase, which closes out Utah’s famed Grand Circle Tour of national parks. And there’s more to come!

A Mindful Approach
Connection with nature makes us healthier, happier ambassadors of the environment. This manifests in the design choices we make and the experiences we curate. Here are some of the ways we uphold our mission.
Additionally, low-level lighting is used throughout our camps, mitigating light pollution and amplifying the night sky. These choices, and others, allow our camps to use significantly less water and energy than a hotel of similar size.
THOUGHTFUL INNOVATION Pioneering the outdoor hospitality space, we employ enhancements across our camps that elevate the guest experience—through thoughtful adventure and culinary programming and a design aesthetic that reflects the surrounding natural environment.
LAND CONSERVATION Under Canvas camps are designed to minimize disturbance to the landscape and maximize open space. Land donations, adaptive use, and partnerships with local conservation organizations are also part of our commitment.
UNPLUG & RECHARGE Wi-Fi is intentionally not offered to our guests so they can disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other.
IN GOOD COMPANY We partner with brands who share the same care for our planet, including plant-based EO️ bath products made in a zero-waste facility, West Elm furnishings that support sustainable initiatives, and lululemon, which has committed to 100% renewable electricity at its owned and operated facilities by the end of this year.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS
Design features at camp include pull-chain showers, faucets that automatically shut off, low-flow toilets, and a towel reuse program.

THE NEIGHBORS
Meet the Locals Don’t miss the native wildlife that live in each of our spectacular landscapes. By Dana Sullivan
The national parks near our camps are protected because they’re home to stunning landscapes, and also because of the unique wildlife that call these landscapes home. YELLOWSTONE Bison Thanks to conservation efforts, these giant mammals number some 3,500 in Yellowstone National Park, enough to make them easy to find as you travel through the area. SPOT ’EM: Foraging in the Lamar Valley in Northern Yellowstone or the Hayden Valley in Central Yellowstone.
MOUNT RUSHMORE Yellow-Bellied Marmot These rotund rodents have a yellow belly and chest, and a white patch that covers their nose and creates an “eyebrow.” SPOT ’EM: Along the Presidential Trail, where they munch on grasses, broadleaved plants, and seeds.

MOAB Desert Bighorn Sheep The regal bighorns wear dramatic, thick, and curled horns (both males and females have them), eat cactus and grasses, and, like camels, can go three days without water. SPOT ’EM: Look carefully for nimble bighorns moving along rocky cliffs, feeding where the terrain looks impassable.
GLACIER Bald Eagle Majestic bald eagles are unmistakable thanks to their white head and massive wingspan (up to 8 feet). SPOT ’EM: In trees near wetlands, lakes, and spawning springs (in springtime). 2021 | UNDER CANVAS | 13
THE NEIGHBORS
ACADIA
Fireflies The park is home to one of a few species of firefly known to synchronize its flash patterns, lighting up the night between mid-May and mid-June. Check the park’s website for exact dates. SPOT ’EM: The fireflies live throughout the park, but the Elkmont viewing area offers the best seats in the house.
LAKE POWELLGRAND STAIRCASE Dinosaurs (not in the flesh, of course!) Many paleontologists believe Grand Staircase has the world’s highest concentration of dinosaur fossils. SPOT ’EM: Literally walk in the (fossilized) footprints of dinosaurs at the Twenty Mile Dinosaur Trackway.
GRAND CANYON Ringtail Cat Arizona’s state animal is the sleek, nimble ringtail cat that looks like a cross between a raccoon, a fox, and a housecat. However, it’s not actually a cat, but rather a member of the raccoon family. SPOT ’EM: Ringtail cats are nocturnal. They hunt along canyon walls, slopes, and ridges in desert scrub or near water sources.
ZION Mule Deer Male mule deer have elegant antlers. By fall, when breeding season begins, the antlers serve as a weapon used to fight for mating rights. SPOT ’EM: At dawn or dusk, when the deer usually graze along the rivers, such as the Virgin River at the bottom of Zion Canyon.

Loons Sometimes mistaken for ducks, loons are more closely related to penguins. Their calls—a wailing laugh or mournful oo-AH-ho—are distinct though. SPOT ’EM: Heavier than most water birds, loons prefer larger bodies of water like Jordan Pond so they have room to take flight.

1 mi. There’s no better introduction to hiking the arid, trailless slickrock landscape typical of Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument than Devils Garden, a 1-square-mile collection of sandstone hoodoos, arches, and mushroom rocks formed over the last 166 million years by erosion and weathering. None of the trails here are marked, and that’s part of what makes its hiking so interesting. Bonus points for packing a picnic—a picnic area here has tables, fire pits, and elevated grills.
4 mi. round-trip At 1,529-feet in elevation, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point in the park and on the U.S.’s eastern seaboard. You can drive to the top (where there’s a half-mile paved pathway loop), but the

3 mi. round-trip Delicate Arch is a bucket-list sight. How close you get will depend on your group’s hiking chops. Walk the entire length of the Delicate Arch Trail (mostly uphill on the way to the arch) and you’ll be rewarded with a close-up view of the arch, and pass a wall of ancient Ute Indian petroglyphs.
3-4+ mi. round-trip Zion is known for its magnificent slot canyons, and on the Narrows Trail, you’ll walk through one in the ankleor knee-deep water of the gently flowing Virgin River. That’s right: The trail is a river. You can hike as far in as you have the stamina for—most people cover 3 or 4 miles of the trail. Just heed
the warnings when high water closes the trail.
5 mi. round-trip Start at the Old Faithful Inn, in front of the Old Faithful Geyser and situated within 2 square miles of a quarter of all the geysers in the world. From Old Faithful, take the paved path toward Castle Geyser (0.2 miles). From there, take the boardwalk across the Firehole River to the Sawmill Geyser. To complete the hike, follow the north trail to Grand Geyser, Beauty Pool, Oblong Geyser, and Giant Geyser before the trail junctions again with the Upper Geyser Trail.

You will not find any water, though. Give yourself twice as much time to make the climb back up. If you’re lucky, you’ll pass the park’s mule train heading up or down the trail, delivering supplies and people to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon.

GRAND CIRCLE ROAD TRIP
Into the Wild Thanks to a new camp at Lake PowellGrand Staircase, you can road-trip through the Southwest’s most epic national parks and monuments via the Grand Circle. By Grant Davis

Our 950-mile itinerary travels through the spectacular vistas, colors, and sunsets of the Southwest, including rock arches at Arches, hoodoos at Bryce, Zion’s slot canyons, rugged Grand Staircase-Escalante, and the awesomeness of the Grand Canyon. Along the way, the Colorado River snakes through the desert landscape. Spend nights at Under Canvas camps beneath some of the darkest star-filled skies in the country. Start the circle wherever is most convenient, and then take a week or more to explore the parks and all the natural wonders and adventures in and around our camps.

GRAND CANYON More than 6,000 feet deep and up to 18 miles wide, the canyon is truly grand. From the South Rim side, you can drop down into it from several trailheads, going from the piñon and juniper forest on the rim to other, ancient worlds of rock—stepping further back in geologic time with every foot you descend.

STARGAZING-GRADE BINOCULARS Binoculars are rated first by magnification and then by the size of their objective lens, the big one at the end. The bigger the lens, the brighter and crisper the view of the stars. A pair of 7x50 binoculars, like Nikon’s Action Extreme 7x50 ATBs, will work well for most star-spotting. Skygazers with steadier hands or a tripod can get away with 10x or 12x binoculars, like the Skygenius 10x50 Binoculars.

You don’t need a telescope to practice astronomy. Beginners can start with the naked eye: ID-ing the constellations and brightest stars. But when you can see billions of them like you can at our Grand Canyon and Moab camps—Grand Canyon and Arches National Parks are both certified Dark Sky Parks—you need help. Enter the Star Walk 2 smartphone app. Hold your phone up to the sky and it will point out 200,000 stars, asteroids, galaxies, and even satellites. Begin with the Milky Way, then move to locate a couple of familiar constellations— Ursa Major, home to the Big Dipper asterism, is a good start—then try and locate them in real life. Once you know where the big stars and galaxies are, you’ll be able to follow more complex star charts to find the really interesting stuff. As you pick up the lay of the sky, it’s time to step up to a pair of binoculars (see below). Armed with these, you should be able to tap your star chart to help you zero in on the Andromeda Galaxy, Jupiter’s moons, the Pleiades, or the M13 star cluster. Also look for colors; stars can be red, orange, white, yellow, and blue. In the constellation Orion you can see the red supergiant Betelgeuse (the hunter’s right shoulder) and the blazing blue supergiant Rigel (his left foot). Red stars are the coolest and blue the hottest; Rigel is hotter than the sun and about 47,000 times more luminous.
WHAT TO LOOK UP FOR IN 2021 TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE + SUPERMOON MAY 26 Visible in much of the U.S., with the Intermountain West able to see totality (at around 5 a.m.). VENUS-MARS CONJUNCTION JULY 12 Look for these two planets in the western sky just after sunset. (Venus is the brighter one, on the right.) PERSEID METEOR SHOWER AUG. 11-12 This year is particularly good for the Perseids because of an earlysetting crescent moon. Expect up to 60 shooting stars per hour.

GUESTBOOK
Brody Schaffer @bossbabybrody
Brody Schaffer is not your typical 5-year-old. “He danced when he was sitting down, and once he could stand, that was it,” says his mom, Danielle Lucia Schaffer, a podcast host, writer, and blogger at citygirlgonemom.com. Last summer, Brody’s moves hit the road, to four Under Canvas camps—Yellowstone, Zion, Grand Canyon, and Moab—that his family linked with one epic road trip. We chatted with Brody about his most memorable moments.
Which Under Canvas camp was your favorite? Yellowstone—we had such a big house [the two-tent Madison River Suite]—and I got to sleep with Mommy and Daddy and I painted trees and rainbows and stuff. I danced outside our house [tent]. We saw lots of big animals, like bison and moose.
What do you love more— spotting a moose in nature or eating s’mores? S’mores! I had lots of them at camp. ... Mom and Dad made my s’mores at our fire. My brothers and sister made their own. And hot chocolate. I had lots of hot chocolate.
I like dancing outside better than inside because of nature. Nature is super cool because of animals and trees. We didn’t pack any of my costumes for this trip because it was a hiking trip but my hiking shoes had pink sequins on them. I love sequins—it’s my favorite color. ... We also went swimming. We jumped into Lake Powell and had a boat, but didn’t camp there. I want to go back and stay in a tent there; it’s cool dinosaurs lived there. Our heart-to-heart with Brody serves as a reminder of the importance of hitting pause and getting outside to enjoy nature. As he dances through life, we can’t wait for him to bring his moves to Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase in 2021. 56 | UNDER CANVAS | 2021
