Welcome 2022

It’s been a decade since Under Canvas first began. We started with a camp in West Yellowstone and a desire to connect guests with the outdoors and to each other through experiences in nature. The journey has led Under Canvas to 10 incredible locations–and counting–across the country and a dedication to getting Outside Together. From camp upgrades and a new solar-powered location, to nightly s’mores, dog-friendly amenities, and next-level partnerships that honor our ecoconscious commitment, we’re continuing on our mission of enhancing access to the great outdoors. We are proud to be celebrating 10 camps in 10 years, and thrilled to introduce our latest: Under Canvas Bryce Canyon. A hiker’s paradise, this beautiful camp is set upon 750 acres of high mountain plains offering stunning views, perfect for unwinding after a day filled with Utah adventures. With this new location comes a record investment across our other camps: unveiling newestgeneration safari-style tents at multiple locations and reimagined outdoor spaces; new yoga and viewing decks to showcase our spectacular locations; and the launch of coffee culture in the great outdoors…to name just a few. Each enhancement is another step toward elevating the outdoor experience and inspiring greater connections with the environment and our planet. Welcome to Under Canvas.

10 Transformational Escapes Inspired by the African safari experience, our immersive outdoor accommodations embrace their natural surroundings while featuring indoor luxuries. Bridging the unique gap between travel and the outdoors, it is our intention to allow everyone to discover their outdoor self in comfort and style. We believe that nature is the best architect, access to the outdoors is a right, not a privilege, and unplugging as a means of recharging is essential for our health and well-being. With 10 camps, a customized pop-up events offering, and a commitment to connecting guests

to the outdoors and each other through experiences in nature, Under Canvas has grown to become a leader in upscale, outdoor hospitality. Dedicated to our mission of enhancing access to extraordinary places and many more outdoor adventures, a record-breaking capital improvement and expansion has been made to the Under Canvas portfolio for the 2022 season. Expanding along Utah’s Grand Circle comes Under Canvas Bryce Canyon, and we’re only getting better! In endless pursuit of new, spectacular locations for our camps, we’re

continuing to deliver the transformative Under Canvas experience throughout the country’s most splendid natural settings.

A Mindful Approach By staying at Under Canvas, you take part in our mission to inspire connections with extraordinary places, people, and the planet by enhancing access to the outdoors.

THOUGHTFUL INNOVATION Pioneering the outdoor hospitality space, we employ thoughtful enhancements across our camps designed to elevate the guest experience—through curated adventure programming, culinary innovation, and localized design aesthetic that reflects the surrounding natural environment. GIVING BACK TO NATURE

As lovers of the outdoors and the beautiful lands that surround our camps, we’re inviting guests and employees to contribute voluntary time or donations to The Nature Conservancy—joining in their pursuit of creating a world where people and nature can thrive together. UNPLUG AND RECHARGE Wi-Fi is intentionally not offered to our guests, so that they can disconnect from technology and reconnect with others. New for 2022, guests can recharge their electric vehicles with Rivian Waypoints chargers at select camp locations.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS

Guests will notice some design features throughout camp that go a long way toward preserving the great outdoors—pull-chain showers, faucets that automatically shut off, low-flow toilets, and a towel reuse program. Accordingly, our camps use significantly less water and energy than a hotel of similar size. Additionally, low-level lighting is used throughout camps to mitigate light pollution and amplify the night sky. LAND CONSERVATION

Under Canvas camps are designed to minimize disturbance and maximize open space, each with dedicated, undisturbed green spaces. Land donations, adaptive use, and partnerships with local conservation organizations are also part of our commitment. IN GOOD COMPANY

We partner with brands who share the same care for our planet, including plant-based EO bath products made in a zero-waste facility, West Elm furnishings that support sustainable initiatives, and lululemon, who has committed to 100% renewable electricity for their owned and operated facilities.

RIVIAN, ERIC RYAN ANDERSON

Connecting with nature makes us healthier, happier ambassadors of the environment, our most precious commodity. This manifests in the design choices we make and the experiences we curate for our guests. Here are some of the ways we uphold our mission.

Making Magic at Under Canvas As a Maine native and F&B Manager at Under Canvas Acadia, Nick Pappas is an integral part of the guest experience, feeding our hungry adventurers. “I’m the guy behind guest favorites like our lobster bakes and oyster tastings,” he says. “But sometimes my job is also running the register, food, doing prep, and dishes. We had to overcome some pretty crazy hurdles last year, but we did everything with a smile on our faces so the guests never knew.” He works to deliver a magical experience for guests, no matter what it takes behind the scenes. “When I was brought on, my biggest vision was to feature Maine. Every single day we sourced fresh, local seafood. I would

send out a message to the whole team letting them know what the catch of the day was, and throughout the day we would share different ideas on how to best prepare it. By the time the afternoon came around, we had this amazing, well-composed dish the entire team collaborated on and, as a result, you could see it in the quality of what we served.” This year, Nick is hoping to take things to the next level by introducing new flavors and flair on-site. “Lobster Hash with Poached Egg and House Hollandaise. We really nailed it with our dinner menu last season, now I want to step up our breakfast,” he says. “And this is one of those WOW dishes. It’s beautiful, elegant, and delicious.”

The Natural World There’s something special about disconnecting, heading out into the natural world, and leaving your worries behind. Korean-American content creator and entrepreneur Laura Jung says nothing gets her going more than the prospect of a trip to the great outdoors. Dividing her time between New York City and Seoul, she understands the allure of unpacking in nature. “As someone who has spent her entire life growing up and living in major cities, being immersed in nature is not something that comes as often as I would like,” she says. “So when I get the opportunity to spend time in nature, I rebrand myself for those few days and fully integrate in the lifestyle.”

Wide open spaces and fresh air are more important than ever, and getting Outside Together with Under Canvas is one way to benefit your health and well-being. Yogi and guest Paige Willis described the experience as grounding. “I knew I wanted to stay somewhere I could feel close to nature,” she said. “I saw shooting stars, befriended strangers, sat by the fire pit, and got a yoga flow in. It was the perfect setup

OCEAN BREATH Find a comfortable seat and start to notice the rhythm of your breath. How long is each inhale and exhale? Is there room for these breaths to be deeper, longer? Then, take

a deep inhale through your nose. Close your lips, gently contract the muscles in the back of your throat, and breathe out through your nose, making a “ha” sound. This mimics the sound of an ocean wave

or a soft whisper, helping calm your mind and body. Repeat this exercise at least five times, and take note of how you feel right after. Anytime you need to get grounded, return to this breath.

MORNING MANTRA

Take note and let the simple act of noticing be proof that you’re present. Embody these mantras or make a mantra of your own, “I am grounded. I am connected to the earth.” This day is yours, so show up fully.

As you flow throughout your day, look for opportunities to make it more mindful. Find ways to become more aware of and connected to your surroundings. Immerse yourself in the great outdoors by soaking up all the phenomena it has to offer. What do you hear, see, taste, smell, and feel?

EXPLORE

A Walk in the Park BRYCE CANYON Queen’s Garden 1.8 miles Descending from the famed Sunrise Point, wide open vistas and scenic views of Bryce Canyon’s hoodoos define the Queen’s Garden trail. Out and back, this short hike is the easiest available in the national park. Descending below the canyon rim, hikers can choose to loop back up to the rim or combine it with Navajo Loop for a longer, more strenuous hiking experience.

Bryce Canyon

LAKE POWELLGRAND STAIRCASE Devils Garden

ACADIA Cadillac Mountain, North Ridge

1 mile There’s no better introduction to hiking the arid, trail-less slickrock landscape typical of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument than Devils Garden, a 1-square-mile collection of sandstone hoodoos, arches, and toadstool rocks formed over the last 166 million years by erosion and weathering. None of the trails here are marked, and that’s part of what makes hiking here so interesting. Bonus points for packing a picnic—a picnic area here has tables, fire pits, and elevated grills.

4 miles round-trip At 1,529 feet in elevation, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point in the park and on the U.S.’s eastern seaboard. You can drive to the top (where there’s a half-mile paved pathway loop), but the effort of walking the 2 miles and 1,150 vertical feet up the mountain’s North Ridge Trail is worth it for the views along the way—Eagle Lake, Dorr Mountain, and Bar Harbor.

EXPLORE

Delicate Arch, Moab

ZION The Narrows

3 miles round-trip Delicate Arch is a bucket-list sight. How close you get will depend on your group’s hiking chops. Walk the entire length of the Delicate Arch Trail (mostly uphill on the way to the arch) and you’ll be rewarded with a close-up view of the arch, and pass a wall of ancient Ute Indian petroglyphs.

3-4+ miles round-trip Zion is known for its magnificent slot canyons, and on the Narrows Trail, you’ll walk through one in the ankleor knee-deep water of the gently flowing Virgin River. That’s right: The trail is a river. You can hike as far in as you have the stamina for—most people cover 3 or 4 miles of the trail. Just heed

the warnings when high water closes the trail.

YELLOWSTONE Upper Geyser Basin Trail 5 miles round-trip Start at the Old Faithful Inn, in front of the Old Faithful Geyser, and you are situated within 2 square miles of a quarter of all the geysers in the world. From Old Faithful, take the paved path toward Castle Geyser (0.2 miles). From there, take the boardwalk across the Firehole River to the Sawmill Geyser. To complete the hike, follow the north trail to Grand Geyser, Beauty Pool, Oblong Geyser, and Giant Geyser before the trail joins again with the Upper Geyser Trail.

Once you hop off, you’ll hike around 1.3 miles up to the turquoise waters of Grinnell Lake, filled with meltwater from the Grinnell Glacier above. Bonus: It’s all downhill back to the ferry. you cool down—from the misting water or from plunging into the swimming hole created by the falls—you can either hike back to the trailhead or continue on up the trail that eventually hits the summit of 6,593-foothigh Mount Le Conte.

GRAND CANYON South Kaibab Trailhead 3 miles round-trip From the South Rim, the Grand Canyon looks vast, but until you get down into it, you can’t grasp the scale of it. The Kaibab Trail will deliver. The

steep but well-trod path drops 1,110 feet in 1.5 miles to your turnaround point at Cedar Ridge, where you’ll find toilet facilities, space to spread out for a snack, and an awestruck understanding of the geological forces that formed the canyon. You will not find any water, though. Give yourself twice as much time to make the climb back up. If you’re lucky, you’ll pass the park’s mule train heading up or down the trail, delivering supplies and people to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon.

Grand Canyon

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS Grotto Falls 2.5 miles round-trip On a hot day, park at the Trillium Gap Trail parking lot and hike to Grotto Falls. W P R O E Nighttime at Under Canvas brings out a sight few of us see anymore: the Milky Way and a sky bursting with billions of stars. The dark skies at our camps are the perfect spots to learn the art of stargazing.

S TA R P O W E R

D

ROOTED IN NATURE: Every Full Moon has a name that’s rooted in nature. The moon phase names we use today often reflect the changing seasons and surrounding environment, including the Harvest Moon in September/October, Strawberry Moon in June, or April’s Pink Moon—inspired by the pink flowers that bloom in the early spring season. Insider tip: The Full Moon is great for night hiking while the New Moon is great for stargazing!

22 | UNDER CANVAS | 2022

TRAVIS BURKE (PREVIOUS AND RIGHT)

Did you know that 80% of Americans cannot see the Milky Way from where they live? Light pollution from cities causes “sky glow” and can extend great distances. Erasing our view of the stars, a high level of light pollution also harms wildlife, wastes energy, and disrupts our sleep. When you stay at Under Canvas, you’re granted the opportunity to see the dark night sky in a different light. At our Bryce Canyon, Moab, Grand Canyon, and Zion locations—Bryce Canyon, Arches, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Parks are all certified Dark Sky Parks—you don’t need a telescope to spot constellations and revel in the sky’s brightest stars. Under Canvas is committed to doing our part to reduce light pollution by following guidance from the International Dark-Sky Association, protecting the night from light pollution since 1988. By pointing lights down, eliminating glare, dimming and turning lights off when not needed, and choosing warmer color light, we are protecting the nighttime environment, ensuring the safety of our guests, and helping you reconnect with the night. Follow these steps when you return home to continue doing your part to turn down light pollution and turn up the stars. Learn more at DarkSky.org.

WHAT TO LOOK UP FOR IN 2022  LUNAR ECLIPSE MAY 16 Visible across much of North America, with a total lunar eclipse visible in the eastern USA.  BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK ASTRONOMY FESTIVAL JUNE 22-25 The 21st annual festival will feature several ranger programs, constellation tours, and family-oriented crafts. Celebrate the night sky at Bryce Canyon!  PERSEID METEOR SHOWER AUGUST 11-12 The Perseids are always popular, but the peak is around the full moon. This year, we expect to see 83 meteors per hour in dark sky conditions.

Eventually you’ll arrive at one of the world’s most magnificent vistas—sunset at the Grand Canyon. Your guide will take you to viewpoints along the canyon’s rim while describing geologic formations, inner canyon trails, and the Colorado River.

Rafting the Flathead River This scenic float on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River isn’t just a feast for your eyes. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a gourmet riverside dinner (buffalo burgers are one option). On the water, an experienced guide will share the history of Native Americans who have lived in this area for millennia as you savor views of the tall peaks of Glacier National Park. This trip is a great opportunity for the whole family or a group of friends to enjoy the river and the variety of scenic landscapes—it’s a favorite for all ages.

Adventure Option: Guided Hiking With its two billion years of exposed geologic history, the Grand Canyon is a place where hiking can be as science-y as it is scenic. Or maybe you’re more interested in biology than geology and want to see some of the park’s diverse flora and fauna? Get exactly what you want on a Grand Canyon hike by heading out with a guide on an adventure completely customized to your interests, schedule, and activity level.

Adventure Option: Fly-Fishing Can you come to Montana and not go fly-fishing? Whether you’re an experienced angler or a first-timer, our seasoned guides will help you land a fish, maybe even a westslope cutthroat trout, a species native to the Glacier area and considered one of the prettiest, hardest-fighting cutthroats around. 2022 UNDER CANVAS | 31

GUEST BOOK

Willamina @williecute

Dog-model and Under Canvas first-timer Willamina, aka Willie Cute, is not your average 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier. “She rules the house and bosses us around,” say her San Diego-based parents Laura and Joel. This past summer, Willie’s spunky sass and style made an appearance at Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase. Between barks and with the help of her parents, we got the inside scoop on what makes Under Canvas a dog’s dream getaway. Which part of the Under Canvas experience did you love most? Willie: I’m a house dog, a little pup that enjoys her creature comforts…I go everywhere

with my mom and dad. I slept like a baby snuggled deep in the comfortable pillows between them—a girl needs her rest, right?! Laura and Joel: When Willie sleeps well, so do we. This was her first time in a tent. We thought she might have a hard time sleeping with all the night sounds of the wild desert, but it was quite the opposite. Dog people will understand, it’s a massive win if your dog is comfortable in a place away from home. What gets your tail wagging more— a doggy-treat or playing outside? Willie: I do love chewy peanut butter bites… I was definitely eyeing those fireside s’mores! Laura and Joel: She can’t have chocolate, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the toasted marshmallow goodness.

Our “Willie Cute” powwow with Willamina, Laura, and Joel shows how outdoor adventures are even better with our furry friends. Willie and her parents dream of taking an epic road trip with a twist: stay at every Under Canvas along the way! We hope to catch Willie at Under Canvas Bryce Canyon in 2022.

60 | UNDER CANVAS | 2022

COURTESY OF WILLIE

How do you explore nature? Willie: Chasing birds, chasing lizards…and mid-morning sunbathing sessions. All four pounds of me hiked around the on-site slot canyon, too! Laura and Joel: She is so tiny. If it weren’t for the on-site canyon hike, we wouldn’t have had the chance to see the desert with Willie. She loves the thought of the outdoors but enjoys the warm and cozy indoor comforts. Which is why she loved her stay at Under Canvas—the best of both worlds!
