Gracias por tu apoyo. editor in chief

art
do what you feel in your heart to be right, for you’ll be criticized anyway. – Eleanor Roosevelt
Don't ask, Don't tell When you look at a piece of food on your plate and decide not to eat it, do you know why? You may be able to answer that question by saying you don’t like the taste, or you are not in the mood, but that doesn’t really address the root of the question, “Why?” Can you tell me why you don’t like the taste? Can you tell me why you are not in the mood? I doubt it. Taste is cultivated by repeated exposure and a series of complex associations the brain makes, which are still not fully understood. The same applies to art. Art is not something you can convince someone to like…no matter how much you talk about it or try to explain it. It’s not like buying a used car. Conversely, if there is a piece of art that speaks to me, there is very little you can do to dissuade my affection for it. I’m not talking about buying art. People can be persuaded to buy things regardless of whether or not they like them or need them. I’m talking about really loving a work of art…and, no one yet has been able to explain that. Every art dealer in the universe would love to figure out the formula for what makes some people to respond to some art and not others. It’s not unlike falling in love. And yet, even though there is no relevant answer to the question, it is what almost every artist I have ever encountered wants to know, “What you think of my work?” And, if they haven’t asked me outright, I know they’re thinking it. It amazes me, because when you stop to think about it, it doesn’t really matter what the response is. Regardless of how anyone answers the question, it won’t change the fact that you make art, and it won’t change the art you make. Although it’s true that artists need feedback, the most valuable feedback comes from other artists. The question of whether or not I like it, and it’s companion question, “Why?” are questions artists should avoid at all costs. However, it’s important
6
uniekest magazine jan 2013
to understand what you are really asking. Let’s take a look. “Does this dress make me look fat?” The question asked. “I feel fat in this dress, can you please tell me I’m pretty ?” The real question “Did you like the dinner I made tonight?” The question asked. “I am really proud of the dinner I made, will you tell me it was good?” The real question “Do you like my work?” The question asked. “I need someone to validate what I am doing, will you?” The real question So, let’s examine this situation from both sides. If the person responds,” Yes, I love your work,” you are happy, you continue to make art, but you become fearful if you want to change or grow because the person said they like THIS art. You can’t keeping making the same piece over and over again or your would be miserable… so it’s loose/loose situation even if they respond positively. If the person responds,”No, I hate it.” You are unhappy, you continue to make art, but you question yourself…wondering what you could change to make them happy. Unfortunately, doing so would make YOU unhappy, and on, and on you go down into the vicious circle of self criticism and self doubt, an artists’ worst enemies. Do yourself a favor. Give yourself a gift you deserve. You’ve worked hard to allow yourself to be an artist, give yourself permission to enjoy it and don’t ask/ don’t tell.

Thanks to a brand new art installation in downtown San Diego, anyone wanting a weather forecast can simply look up and get one! Artist Spencer Finch has just completed the “Weather Report” project at the Grande condominiums at Santa Fe Place. As part of a Centre City Development Corporation requirement for public art at the Grande property, the project funded by Bosa Development California furthers the goals of implementing a public art vision for the Santa Fe Depot precinct. New York artist Spencer Finch and his team of designers and fabricators have utilized the lighthouses on the top of the Grande North and Grande South towers at 1199 and 1205 Pacific Highway to create “red sky” and “blue sky” lighting compositions foretelling the following day’s weather forecast. For Spencer Finch, creating a modern day lighthouse on the Pacific is a way of using the Grande lighthouses to convey practical information signaling tomorrow’s weather. Through abstract compositions of architectural forms and light, seen throughout downtown and beyond, the lighthouses create a link to San Diego’s maritime and seafaring tradition with a modern twist on the old saying “Red sky at night; sailors delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.” Finch is hopeful that the San Diego community will use the lighthouses and his artwork for their own use and enjoyment for weather forecasting. “My vision was to create watercolors of the skies that would become a project of light and shadow in the sky at an enormous scale, thereby making the connection between the picture, the idea and the weather forecast.” The mechanics of the programming and technology are complicated but the fixtures are simple. A daily RSS weather feed from Yahoo weather signals the representation of the following day’s weather. This triggers the 150 fluorescent tubes and color gels in the lighthouses atop the Grande structures to signal Finch’s red or blue sunset pictures in the architecture of the buildings to make the connection into indicators of weather information.

n a city that has only begun to recover from a wave of chaos that left thousands dead and an entire metropolis horrified of setting foot on the streets, it may seem brazen to encourage upheaval. But To Preserve Disorder - the inaugural installation at the Otras Obras temporary art space in Zona Centro, Tijuana - aimed to do just that. “I’m encouraging terrorism,” New York artist Jesse Hlebo told me during a December 6 invitational at the new gallery off of Calle Sexta, “just encouraging anti-state and anti-authoritarian processes, and attempting to have a creative space that enables people to realize that you can be radical and that there can be possibilities.” While some may say it’s too soon to

poke the proverbial bear, a short chat with collaborating artists Hlebo and Joaquín Segura in the courtyard connecting Otras Obras to the happening Moustache Bar next door made it clear that, rather than aggravating Tijuana’s tenuous peace, the installation sought to address the underlying social and political forces that allowed the city to fall under the rule of crime and corruption in the first place. “Both of our work has to do with different manifestations of violence in our social systems,” says Segura, a nomadic artist from Mexico City. “I’m really interested in how power structures regulate our everyday operations. I’m interested in art being a trigger to action. We were also thinking of post-nationalism, failed states, and worldwide economic crisis.”
As such, the gallery (which is no bigger than a medium storage unit) was arranged to instill an immediate sense of confinement and paranoia followed by a series of clues leading to liberation. Upon entering, one faced a length of corrugated metal topped with razor wire – a mash up of popular themes in both high-security prisons and the U.S./Mexican border. “Borders create a disconnect,” said Hlebo. “They create something fragmented, which is fictitious.” Along one wall, Hlebo posted the profiles of 80 New Jersey prison escapees pulled from the Department of Corrections website. On the floor, a red can of diesel and a fertilizer bag brimming with cotton balls indicated the next step. A pile of debris in the next corner text and photographs by chad deal
showcased the desired result. “A few years ago, Tijuana wasn’t a very active contemporary art city,” Segura told me in the courtyard, where TJ’s krautrock-infused ruidoson trailblazers Los Macuanos would perform later in the evening. “But now local artists have been migrating together and they are prepared to work. Everything seems ready to blow up.” He gestured into the gallery where, a few weeks earlier, Hlebo had lit off a half-stick of dynamite in a sack of sodium nitrate-rich fertilizer that had been stuffed with pages of prison protocols from California and New Jersey, U.S. immigration codes, and bits of the Mexican constitution. Segura had watched over a live above: A half-stick of dynamite, a bag of fertilizer, and selected texts, exploded.
Ustream as the explosion blew a hole in one wall of the gallery (the former office of Tijuana’s bourgeoning All My Friends music festival) and shattered an overheard fluorescent light. The light tube had been swept in with the politically-charged shrapnel and now sat in a heap beneath Segura’s 3.75’ X 5’ untitled print of a U.S. Army manual (“TM31-201-1- Unconventional Warfare Devices and Techniques – Incendiaries”) from his series, “A definitive reader for a botched revolution.” Indeed, the insurrectionary energy was as undeniable as it was current. Just a week earlier, several hundred protesters had clashed with police in Mexico City when President Enrique Peña Nieto took the oath of
office, resulting in at least 100 arrests and an additional 100 injuries. As we sipped Valle de Guadalupe wine and talked in the open night air about the (as Hlebo noted) widely underreported events, more than 60 protesters remained in prison on vandalism charges that critics were calling groundless. Prior to the their collaborating on the installation, Joaquin was introduced to Hlebo’s art via work featured on the cover of Showpaper, a free bi-weekly listing of all-ages and DIY shows in New York City put out by Otras Obras promoter Todd Patrick. “Aside from the obvious deterrents, which are a recent history of bad press, and a congested border, Tijuana is a perfect location for Todd and I, for two reasons,” says Otras

Obras curator Michael Ray-Von, an artist from Los Angeles. “The first being that the locale is certainly generous when it comes to producing political discourse, so it makes an interesting environment for exhibiting critical artworks. And in addition to this, there's a local community of young cultural entrepreneurs who have been producing a Tijuana that's really positive and completely unique. And I had not anticipated the latter, but I think that community was the reason Todd initiated this project. So I came here expecting a generative political atmosphere on which to develop a critical curatorial practice, and found that there was also this rich community of young cultural producers who are establishing a Tijuana that is nothing like what we see in lousy text and photographs by chad deal translations by paulina martinez

So I'm finding that more and more I'm losing sight of ‘Why TJ?’, and feeling more like ‘Why not?’ And that last bit feels like publicist rhetoric, but it's a genuine sentiment. Spend a little time here and the question answers itself.” Later, when the neighborhood bars began to fill, Segura’s “trigger to action” did, in fact, take effect (though not in the intended manner) when a young local tore Segura’s untitled print from the wall and threw it to the ground - an overture that Patrick later deemed “boring.”

The crowd dispersed back inside and into nearby bars, exchanging murmurs about – would you believe it? – manifestations of violence in our social systems and the power structures that regulate our everyday operations. Regardless, the outburst did spur an immediate dialogue (more about etiquette than art or revolution) before the uninspired nihilist was ejected from the gallery. An hour or so later, the policia rolled up and,

A healthy diet plays a significant role in a person's overall health. Without a healthy diet, men and women are more susceptible to disease and other potentially harmful ailments. But when many people think of a healthy diet, a lack of flavor is often one of the first things to come to mind. That's a common misconception, as a diet that's healthy and full of nutrients can simultaneously be flavorful. In fact, it's easy to enjoy many of your favorite dishes in a way that makes them much healthier. Oftentimes, a few minor alterations to a recipe is all it takes to turn the dish from high-risk to healthy. * Trim the fat. No one wants to eat fat, but fat isn't entirely bad for you. Fat can help your body absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, and replacing fat with something like carbohydrates decreases how much these valuable vitamins are absorbed. In addition, dietary fat releases chemicals in the brain that make you feel full, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Those are just a few of the benefits of dietary fat, which is an essential element of a healthy diet. But overconsumption of dietary fat can be dangerous, and many people simply need to trim some fat from their diets. One way to do that is to reduce how much butter, shortening or oil you use when cooking. For some recipes, you may be able to cut suggested portions of such ingredients by half without replacing them; however, for others, especially those for baked goods, these items may have to be replaced. In the case of the latter, find a suggested alternative to high-fat items, and only use half of the high-fat item listed in the original recipe. Chances are you won't taste the difference, but your body will be better for it. * Substitute healthier fare. Substituting items

is another way to turn a favorite dish into a healthier dish without altering the flavor dramatically, if at all. For example, instead of cooking with enriched pasta, purchase whole-wheat or whole-grain pastas, which are higher in fiber and lower in calories. If a recipe calls for using milk, choose fat-free milk instead of whole milk. Doing so reduces your fat intake by nearly 8 grams per cup. Recipes can even be made healthier by simply cutting back on the main dish and adding more vegetables. Instead of using the recommended amount of meat or chicken, scale back and make up for it with additional vegetables, which reduces your caloric and fat intake while adding more vitamins and minerals to your diet. * Change your methods. Certain cooking techniques are healthier than others. Frying foods or cooking with fat, oil or salt is not the healthiest way to prepare a meal. Some of your favorite dishes that call for frying or cooking in oil can be just as flavorful if you opt for healthier methods like braising, broiling, grilling, or steaming. When recipes call for basting foods in oil or drippings, forgo these unhealthy options and baste foods in vegetable juice or fat-free broth instead. What you use to cook can also be healthy or unhealthy. Nonstick cookware won't require you to use oil or butter to keep foods from sticking to the pan. This reduces the amount of fat and calories you will consume, and you likely won't notice a difference with regards to flavor. Men and women who enjoy food and cooking their own meals can take several steps to make those meals healthier without sacrificing flavor.

How to choose a resolution you can keep New Year's resolutions may have varying degrees of success, but even those people who find it difficult to keep their resolutions year after year still tend to make a new resolution once the hour of midnight chimes. Employing the buddy system is one way to improve your chances of making your New Year's resolution a success.
