En Noviembre, es fácil sentir como la temporada navideña se acerca mientras los días calurosos empiezan a convertirse en noches frías. Ha sido todo un trayecto llegar aquí, y aunque todavía nos quedan millas por recorrer y mucho que aprender, estamos muy agradecidos y emocionados por esta tercera edición. En esta edición hemos decidido traer a usted un poco de lo que está sucediendo en el centro Histórico de Tijuana. Jill Holslin, periodista Norteamericana viviendo en la ciudad de Tijuana, nos habla sobre como la creatividad de los tijuanense le esta dando vida a Pasaje Gómez y Pasaje Rodríguez, estos lugares que fueron olvidados por muchos años. En esta edición también encontraras ideas de cómo utilizar las calabazas en esta temporada, cómo prepararse para el Viernes negro y un poco de Refugios Urbanos, la exposición individual de Luis Garzón Masabó en La Caja Galería. Es un inmenso placer agradecer a todos los que han proporcionado información para esta edición. También queremos recordarles que la Revista UNIEKEST invita a presentar trabajos de redacción, dibujos de arte, materiales fotográficos, y contribuciones tuyas y de todos los Artistas. UNIEKEST esta compuesta por artistas de calidad de diferentes orígenes creativos, académicos y culturales. Esperamos dar al artista una exposición bien merecida, en la creencia de que el mundo se beneficiarán de ver y disfrutar de estas obras fantásticas. No nos suscribimos a una cultura específica dentro de los mundos del arte ... de hecho animamos a todos. Creemos firmemente que la inspiración no es un género específico y esperamos que a través de nuestra revista, podamos crear un mayor aprecio por el arte en todo tipo de persona, independientemente en que cultura/estilo de vida se identifican. Esto puede sonar un poco idealista, pero ... ¿por qué no? Sólo esperamos representar adecuadamente la diversidad, inspiración e infinita creatividad de los artistas con la mayor precisión posible. REFUGIOS URBANOS Ciudades Difusas y (Des)Esperanza
Since September 6, is in exhibit the new Individual Exposition at La Caja Galería, titled :Refugios Urbanos", from the Visual Artist Luis Garzón Mosabó. "Refugios Urbanos" reflects the artist perspective about the existent urban conglomerate in this city, using diverse techniques. "This exposition, Refugios Urbanos, fundamentally treats the result of the socials processes of the intervention of public spaces where constructive, creative, and chaotic elements intervene. I believe is an excellent opportunity to expose, now that a cycle closes, and to open a new life stage with respect to what I do as an artist in this city, that I love and enjoy so much," says Luis Garzón Mosabó. The Artist proposal will stay on exhibit until the first week of December.
La obra de Luis Garzón -siempre en continuo proceso de cambio-, de nueva cuenta asume el desafío de replantear el dibujo, que ha sido por largo tiempo vector de su producción, ahora lo hace desde la poética de la línea en su esencialidad geométrica y el color, en sus variantes análogas y contrastantes. Su interés da un giro hacia la exploración del espacio (bidimensional), del área urbana con su densidad poblacional correspondiente y fundamentalmente, en su estructuración arquitectónica. El dibujo y el color aquí, son sugerencias que dan cuerpo a un vaivén de ideas en torno al paisaje propio de las ciudades vistas por el autor como refugios. Trilogía (líneas, color y concepto) que conminan también a reflexionar sobre nuestro protagonismo y compromiso con el medio. Refugios (urbanos), dice Garzón de sus lienzos de colores sosegados y en ocasiones tímidamente estridentes, refugios no de acción o ayuda humanitaria (que bien pudieran serlo), sino de techos que albergan disparidades sociales, cárcel gigante de millones de habitantes… inmersos en un ciclo en el que buscan, aunque no lo parezca, emanciparse. Estos planos de color y líneas, que componen bloques (manzanas o colonias) aglomerados en su mayoría, con líneas que se entrecruzan en un orden

casi fractal, plasmados como vistas aéreas, rememoran -a caso-, la ciudad social y lúdica situacionista en la que el juego, la imaginación y la participación social deberían ser un hecho en su construcción y en este sentido, los planos citadinos de Garzón, habría que verlos como mapas psicogeográficos en los que hay que dejarse llevar a la deriva por líneas imaginarias de calles y pasadizos, tan sólo conectadas a nuestra imaginación o como último aliento a nuestras utopías. (En una acción que encuentro análoga, Luis Garzón se vale, además de los colores, de recursos tecnológicos: fragmentos de cintas -Masking tape- de uso industrial, empleadas por él para emmascarillar, que aún contienen residuos de pigmentos y que aluden a ciudades contemporáneas con sus hordas urbanas, su caos existencial y democracia disfrazada; en donde el reúso y tal vez el reciclado se van volviendo constancia, más por beneficio personal que por compromisos con el ambiente). "En el proceso combino la pintura intuitiva con los principios fundamentales de armonía en color, yuxtaposición de forma y la textura excavada", palabras puntuales del artista que hacen visible los recursos que le permitieron proponer una pintura nueva, asida a un imprescindible componente conceptual. Artists Bring New Life to the Historic Center of Tijuana reactivando espacios: Artistas traen vida nuevamente al centro histórico de Tijuana. Las Galerías cuentan con fotografía, arte contemporáneo, graffiti, y la escultura. En cualquier fin de semana, encontrará lecturas de poesía, talleres y clases en el grabado y la impresión, el hip hop y la pintura de graffiti en directo. Los adolescentes y 20-tantos pasan el rato aquí con más viejos, los artistas más establecidos y fotógrafos, dando al espacio un moderno, ambiente bohemio.

ucked away off Avenida Revolución in downtown Tijuana, Pasaje Rodriguez and Pasaje Gomez are easy to miss. But slow down and look, and you will see that local artists have brought these spaces to life. I first visited Pasaje Rodriguez almost two years ago. It was a dismal, rainy night in Tijuana. But my friends James and Jodi said, “Come on, let’s go check it out!” Not knowing Tijuana at all, I was thinking “What? Where is this place? Yeah, we are gonna get lost for sure.” After splashing through the rainy

streets in Jodi’s rugged SUV, we parked on Calle Carillo Puerto (3rd Street) and ran through the pouring rain across Avenida Revolución. Up ahead we saw the bright red neon lights of Caliente casino. Walking closer, the harsh florescent lights of a pharmacy revealed a mannequin dressed in a sexy nurse uniform, inviting passers by to buy “Viagra.” We ducked inside Pasaje Rodriguez, and suddenly the atmosphere was relaxed and chill. We were drawn to the lovely green wood frame doorway of a gallery called Baja Republika. Inside, a group of ten friends was gathered around a bar, drinking wine and sharing oysters
and shrimp ceviche. They eagerly invited us to join them, and soon I found myself singing along as one of the guests plucked his guitar and sang the nueva trova hit by Silvio Rodriguez “Ojalá.” I felt like I was home, among old friends, even though we had just met. And I think it’s this sense of family and community that gives Pasaje Rodriguez its charm and appeal. in the 1950s. Many of the shops have charming architectural features, rediscovered when local artists and entrepreneurs began to remodel the spaces to open wine bars, galleries, and bookstores. Efren Parra, owner of Baja Republika, uses a lot of natural materials like stone, metal and reclaimed wood in his space, giving it a cozy organic feel. While remodeling, Parra explained, he removed the clumsy merchandise racks of the curio shop days. Behind a hunk of plywood he discovered a gorgeous vintage 1920s oak and glass door. The off-the-street location creates a relaxed atmosphere where friends

can wander freely with a Hefeweizen or glass of Cabernet in hand. Galleries feature photography, contemporary art, graffiti, and sculpture. On any given weekend, you will find poetry readings, workshops and classes on engraving and printing, hip hop and live graffiti painting. Teenagers and 20-somethings hang out here with older, more established artists and photographers, giving the space a hip, bohemian vibe. A lot of the energy is coming from a younger generation of Tijuanenses— artists and cultural entrepreneurs who are interested in putting a new face on old Tijuana. Young, hip, and 20-something, the
cultural entrepreneur Miguel Buenrostro rejects the notion that Tijuana must reinvent itself in the shadow of its northern neighbor. His grandfather owned commercial properties in the pasajes in the 1950s. “TJ has its own identity and we need to find it,” says Buenrostro. Through the collaborative efforts of artists, musicians and developers, Buenrostro envisions a new Tijuana. His new website, Reactivando Espacios (Reactivating Spaces), features stories of the people and places of Tijuana’s historic downtown. “Downtown Tijuana will no longer have that image of pharmacies or illegal drugs. seen as a creative city,” says Miguel Buenrostro. Architect and entrepreneur Francisco Garcia Rodriguez grew up in Tijuana, and is the owner of the gallery & cafe Studio 2287 in Pasaje Rodriguez. Jumping on board with the craft beer craze, he brews and sells his own artisanal beer under his label Teodora. an enormous space in the second level of Pasaje Rodriguez. Both have to work Freelance into their spare time. Ximena works at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte doing publicity and communications for the university. And when Ruben’s not preparing a presentation on the Italian Baroque for his art class, he’s offering workshops on DSLR cameras and photoshop. A group of local photographers meet here monthly to share and critique their photographs. It is this vision of Tijuana as a creative city that propels the movement forward. And the efforts have paid off. This year in April 2012, Pasaje Rodriguez celebrated its second anniversary, and Pasaje
Gomez produced its first public event “Arts and Trees.” In mid-July, the new Plaza Revolución opened its doors to dozens more artists, graphic designers and photographers. One Friday night, I walked past and saw a huge crowd. Up on stage, the local band Pucha Lucha was playing ska tunes, dressed in lucha libre masks and black leather and tights. As they burst into a cover of “I wanna be sedated,” an elderly man joined in, spinning across the floor and smiling at the crowd, a cigarette dangling from his lips. Yeah, I thought, I can feel right at home here.

Elliot Brown is a multifaceted artist based in Los Angeles. After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena August of 2011, Elliot has shown his work in several galleries in Southern California. Elliot's work has a unique blend of chaos, misanthropy, and strange beauty that creates abstract narratives that often have a surreal quality to them. His inspirations are Rock and Roll, Debauchery, Blasphemy, and nature. The typically used media for Elliot are; oil, acrylic, graphite.

Originario de Tijuana Baja California. Incursiono de manera empírica en el arte del dibujo, la pintura, escultura y modelismo. Empezó pintando cuadros para la avenida Revolución, participo en el Libro BLACK VELVET ART, publicado en Estados Unidos por la University Press of Mississippi en el 2011. Después se dedico a pintar retratos 100% en terciopelo negro por encargo, haciendo trabajo para el afamado Skater ERICK ELLINGTONG, el baterista de Mastodont Bran Dailor y para el comisinista de arte en terciopelo negro William "Bill" Robison. Después de haber pintado por 3 años y un año sabático, regreso decidió a crear su obra original y reinventarse firmando sus cuadros como Frank Luna. Creo, una colección de 20 piezas, todas sobre terciopelo negro. En ellas buscaba expresar algo que realmente reflejara un sentir, algo con un significado verdadero. Su primera exhibición “Imágenes y Acertijos” fue en Rosarito B.C. México. Meses después presento esa misma exhibición en Tijuana, en la galería “Las Hijas del Cuarto Obscuro” en Pasaje Rodríguez. Toda la galería estaba llena de acertijos y los retaba a descubrir en que orden cronológico estaba la obra. “Fue una forma de hablar y ser realmente escuchado” dice Frank Luna. Pintar sobre terciopelo negro es algo nuevo para Frank Luna. Esta tan entusiasmado en pinar sobre terciopelo negro que no quiere quedarse con las ganas de experimentar todo ello. Quiere poder expresar lo mejor posible y ser interprete de las cosas que la vida nos trae en general. Por el momento sus obras son un poco obscuras, pero no por eso se define como tal, dado que sus obra esta en desarrollo. Quiere ser capaz de moverse por todas las facetas que la vida nos trae y no ser catalogado como obscuro ya que no lo es. “Solo es una etapa” dice Frank Luna, un prólogo antes de poder adquirir mas experiencias y vivencias para crear sin limites. El hecho de que pinte Calaveras, es simplemente porque debajo de la piel todos somos iguales, el arte no se fija en la apariencia de las personas para hacerlos creativos, ademas ha sido un impulso el incluir de una u otra forma una calavera. En su segunda exhibición "Prólogo Obscuro", se prometió hacer algo que no buscara ser bonito porque “No siempre se tiene que ser bonito para poder expresar” dice Frank Luna. Se llama "Prólogo Obscuro" porque es el principio de algo, aunque no sabe lo que seguirá después, pero esta contento porque dará el 100% para 16 que esto todo siga. uniekest magazine nov 2012

Put pumpkins to use in many different ways Utiliza la Calabazas de muchas maneras diferentes. Ademas de hacerlas linternas para Halloween, puedes utilizar las calabazas para crea un cuenco, en diferentes comidas, velas, faciales, macetero, estiĂŠrcol vegetal, caldera y muchas otras cosas.
Autumn is the season when pumpkins are ripe for the picking, and thousands of people flock to local farms and roadside vendors to select perfect pumpkins. Many pumpkins are turned into decorative jack-o'lanterns for Halloween, only to be tossed in the trash come November 1. That could be because many people are unaware of the various ways they can put pumpkins to good use. Pumpkins are gourds and members of the squash family and have been grown and used for thousands of years. Evidence suggests that pumpkins date back to 7000 B.C., possibly originating in Mexico. Today they are widely used for decorating around Halloween, but there are many other things that can be done with pumpkins. Create a food vessel. Pumpkins can be transformed into bowls to hold soup, punch, fruit, or even dips. Make sure the pumpkin has been cleaned well of its pulp and seeds, as well as the stringy flesh that is inside. Rub the inside walls of the pumpkin with oil to keep them from drying out and caving in, then fill with your food of choice. Make pumpkin puree. Puree from a pumpkin can be used in all types of recipes, from soups to baked goods. The puree also can replace the oil in cake

recipes. Cut the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and stringy membranes. Then place it cut-side-down in a pan with a little water in the bottom. Bake at 350 F for around 90 minutes. The flesh will become tender and easily removable. Blend the resulting puree in a food processor and reserve flesh for recipes. Some pumpkins are sweeter or better to use as part of recipes. Check the variety you're purchasing. Whip up a facial. Use some pumpkin puree with a little brown sugar and a dash of milk to create a vitamin-rich facial mask. Get illuminated. Turn hollowed-out mini pumpkins into candles. Melt soy wax, beeswax or the gel type of candle wax that can be found at most craft stores. Add your favorite scent and place a wick into the bottom of the pumpkin. Then pour the wax into hallowed-out space and allow it to harden. Try the same thing with bumpy and multi-colored gourds for added decorating appeal. Turn the pumpkin into a flower pot. Fill a hollow pumpkin with soil. You may not have to worry about scraping the pumpkin completely clean because the pulp can be used to help fertilize the potting soil. Plant your favorite fall flowers into the festive and earth-
friendly flower pot. When the pumpkin shows signs of rotting, simply put the whole thing into a traditional flower pot or bury it directly in the ground. Make pumpkin stock. While vegetable or meat-based stocks may be the standards, pumpkin can be used to make stock as well. Clean out the seeds from the stringy guts of the pumpkin and put the guts into a pot filled with water. Add celery, carrots or any other aromatic vegetables for extra flavor. Allow to boil for at least 30 minutes. The stock is ready when it begins to change color. Strain and reserve the stock for use in a variety of recipes. Add to compost bins. You can add the discarded pumpkins to your backyard compost bins to further replenish the soil. Turn into a billowing cauldron. Instead of a standard jack-o'-lantern, put a glass jar into the carved pumpkin, add dish soap and hot water to the jar and then put in a piece of dry ice. Bubbles and smoke will pour out of the pumpkin to create a spooktacular effect. Pumpkins are staples of autumn decorating. But there are more uses for these orange gourds than just carving them into Jack-O-Lanterns.

Anualmente, miles de compradores inundan los centros comerciales desde las primeras horas de la mañana, tratando de obtener las mejores ofertas para sus regalos de temporada festiva. Como hacer sus compras junto a tantas personas y tener a disposición tantas ofertas puede ser confuso, la elaboración de una estrategia de compras para el “Viernes Negro” puede darle cierta organización al caos. Las visiones de las compras el “Viernes Negro” pueden traernos a la mente compradores frenéticos golpeando las puertas de las tiendas para disfrutar de precios enormemente reducidos en la caja registradora.
