So, why Essex? My degree gave me the foundation and experience to be able to pick up other languages quickly. For example, I learnt Dari whilst I was living in Afghanistan, and most recently Farsi as part of my work on Iran. Because of the skills I gained at Essex I now have an exciting career with the diplomatic service of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Sarah Ayling, BA Modern Languages and Linguistics graduate
I loved having the freedom to tailor my modules to match my interests. My lecturers were passionate about their subjects and were always friendly and approachable. I am now a solicitor with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and having an in-depth knowledge of both the English language and communication is very relevant to my legal career. Makayla Braddy, BA English Language* graduate
I loved the community feel of the University, the strong friendships you could make and having the opportunity to socialise with people from so many different countries. After leaving Essex, I started a PGCE and completed my year of school-based teacher training for Spanish and French. The high standard of teaching at Essex has provided me with a lifelong skill and the confidence to now teach languages to others. Ross Thorpe, BA Spanish Studies and Modern Languages graduate
