About Tunnels to Towers
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to ensuring we never forget 9/11 and the sacrifices made by our heroic first responders and military. The foundation pays off the mortgages of law enforcement officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty (or to 9/11-related illnesses) and leave behind young children. T2T also builds mortgage-free smart homes to meet the unique needs of our most catastrophically injured veterans and first responders and for the families of fallen service members. Started in December of 2001, the Foundation has raised more than $500 million to support our nation’s greatest heroes and their families. More than 1,000 mortgage-free homes have been delivered or are in progress. More than half a million people have participated in T2T’s national run, walk and climb series. T2T was founded in tribute to New York Fire Department firefighter Stephen Siller, who died on September 11, 2001 during the 9-11 attacks. Teen Ministry Revitalizes West Elizabeth Park for the Community
Peters Creek Historical Society Program on “Coins That Talk”
By Charlotte Hopkins
Narrow Way Ministries, of Calvary Chapel South Pittsburgh (CCSP), passionately embarked on a community-driven mission recently to beautify and restore the 7th Street Park in West Elizabeth.
With a strong sense of purpose and commitment, they devoted their time to cleaning up the park, making it shine with renewed energy. Their selfless efforts demonstrated their values of compassion and service, leaving a positive impact on the community they served. Through their action, they exemplified the essence of Christian principles, spreading hope and kindness to all who visit the revitalized park.
Pastor Tim Green stated, “They wanted to show the love of Jesus to the community by doing something practical.” Councilwoman Janet Isaacs expressed her delight in the work by Narrow Way. “They cleaned the park, touched up on paint, and even built a new park bench. They each had a job to do. It was so regimented. They laughed and they sang. It really was awesome. Everyone did a great job!”

‘Boats on the River’ West Jefferson Hills Historical Society Presentation Set for Aug. 23
Who would not enjoy a lovely boat ride down the Mon or up the Ohio River this summer? “Boats on the River” presented by Norene Beatty at 7:00 PM August 23 in the Community Rooms of the Jefferson Hills Borough Building might provide just the vicarious experience desired.
Inspired by letters written by early Pittsburgh settler James O’Hara who was purchasing a sailing ship, Beatty tried to find out everything she could about the many boats that once graced the Ohio River. The result is the fascinating free program that she will present at the West Jefferson Hills Historical Society general meeting in August. Society and community members alike are invited to attend this program about a historical perspective of the Ohio River through the boats that sailed upon it.
South Park Women’s Club Donation Will Help With Buffalo Preserve
Fran Ruppen, outgoing President of South Park Women’s Club recently presented a check for $891.20 to Friends of the South Park Buffalo Preserve. The SPWC check was presented to Tim Foster a Friend and Volunteer at South Park Preserve.
With the check received from Mrs. Ruppen, ‘The Friends’ of preserve were able to purchase 2 tranquilizer rifles and supplies, that are to be kept by Buffalo Bob and Allegheny County Police. These rifles had been on their wish list, because of a recent buffalo escape. They will be used as part of a plan to safely return a spooked or frightened buffalo back to its family. Receiving these tranquilizer rifles greatly improves odds that an animal will be safely returned with a happy, safe ending.
The ‘Friends’ of our famous buffalos, are thankful to all SPWC ladies for this generous donation. Monies, which enabled club ladies to donate to this cause, were raised throughout the year and especially because of their great craft show, which is held each October.

Abandoned Pittsburgh with Huck Beard

Join photographer and author Huck Beard for a picture presentation that explores Steel City’s industrial past. His photography project, Abandoned Pittsburgh, documents the Steel City's forgotten industrial and community sites where "beauty in decay" still exists. His pictures ask the question, “Does a building have a soul? And once it is empty of people, does it still have a story to tell?” Refreshments will be served. FREERegistration is required.

Penn Highlands Mon Valley Is Nationally Recognized for Its High-Quality COPD and Stroke Care
Penn Highlands Mon Valley received two American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® quality achievement awards for its commitment to ensuring that patients receive the most appropriate treatments.
Heart Failure
Penn Highlands Mon Valley’s commitment to excellence in patient care was recognized with the Get With the Guidelines — Heart Failure Gold Plus Award — Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. This award shows that the hospital follows the most current evidence-based guidelines and has met specific achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients which means reduced readmissions and more healthy days at home.
Nearly 6 million U.S. adults are liv-
ing with heart failure, a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030. Despite the name, heart failure does not mean that the heart has stopped working; it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there is no cure for heart failure, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.
Additionally, Penn Highlands Mon Valley was recognized on the American Heart Association’s Target: Heart Failure and Target: Type 2 Diabetes honor rolls. Hospitals on the Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll meet specific criteria that improves medication adherence, provides early follow-up care and coordination and enhances patient education. Hospitals on the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll aim to ensure that
patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart disease or stroke.
Stroke
Penn Highlands Mon Valley also received the organization’s Get With The Guidelines — Stroke Gold Plus Award Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. The hospital earned this award for ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally recognized, researchbased guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood
and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.
The hospital also received the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Award which aims to ensure those with Type 2 diabetes receive the most-up-to-date care when hospitalized due to stroke.
“Penn Highlands Mon Valley is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines,” said Peter J. Adamo, Penn Highlands Healthcare Southwestern Region Market President. “Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in the Mon Valley region can experience longer, healthier lives.”

New TJ Unified Bocce Team Plays With a Purpose
By Lillian Bradford
A new team was added to Thomas Jefferson High School’s substantial sports offerings during the 2023-24 school year… Unified Bocce! Special Olympics Pennsylvania, with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), has created a unified bocce program for schools across the Commonwealth. They’ve worked with 91 schools in 12 counties to create Unified bocce, track, and soccer teams.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with the game, bocce was popularized in Italy and brought to America, and involves a pallina, a small usually lighter-colored ball, that is rolled, followed by eight bocce balls divided among two teams. The teams take turns seeing who can get their bocce ball closest to the pallina to score points.
High School teachers Emily Leininger and Michael Rose worked together alongside their TJ Best Buddies Club members to form the bocce team. Their goal is to unite athletes with and without disabilities. The team played matches at Keystone Oaks and Upper St. Clair and hosted Baldwin and South Park in TJ Gymnasium, having a great time during their season. The team also participated in several activities, including a school pep rally and a teacher and administration versus students matches.
At a school pep rally, senior Ariann Downer was recognized for being a dualsport athlete during the winter season; also playing on the girls basketball team. Ariann, and former TJ student, Sydney Shelpman, were recognized at Senior
Night before the match against South Park. On Senior Night, Ariann’s basketball team came to support her. The Jaguars’ bocce team won the match in overtime, called the “golden frame.”
The Unified bocce team was recognized at the WJHSD School Board meeting for their first year and accomplishments. The squad was presented certificates for their hard work.
Members of the bocce team included: Kaitlyn Anderson, Lily Bradford, Noah Carlins, Ariann Downer, Abby Kauffman, Emma Pritchard, Gary Pritchard, Charlotte Rockwell, Sydney Shelpman, Noah Skalos, Cameron Skalos and Grace Vogtsberger.
The TJ Unified bocce team and coaches had a wonderful time this past season, and are very thankful for the support and opportunities.

Outdoor Power Equipment Helps
Weather a Storm or Power Outage
(NAPSI)—Storms can strike at any time, so having the right outdoor power equipment on hand and keeping safety in mind is important, says the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). Home and business owners should think ahead, says OPEI, before foul weather or a power outage occurs.
“Any season can be storm season,” says Kris Kiser, President & CEO of OPEI, an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of outdoor power equipment, small engines, battery power systems, portable generators, utility and personal transport vehicles, and golf cars.
He notes that outdoor power equipment is evolving. “There’s a power source for every need including battery/electric, propane, solar and gasoline,” he says, noting each has different maintenance and care requirements.
To get ready for inclement weather, homeowners should follow these tips.
1) Identify which equipment is needed before a storm. Chainsaws or pole saws can trim limbs and shrubs ahead of a storm and handle clearing. String trimmers, pruners and chainsaws can remove combustible material from around your home, making it less vulnerable to wildfires.

appliances and charges cell phones when utilities go down. A whole house generator can keep the lights and appliances on and running. Before an outage, plan where the generator will be set up (never in a home or garage, and always away from your home and any air intake) and determine how to secure it if needed. Buy and install a carbon monoxide detector. Get outdoor-rated extension cords for portable generators and consider adding an approved generator cover for rainy weather.
Water pumps can get water and muck out of basements and homes. Be sure you know how to operate the pump. Never pump substances that your equipment is not designed to cope with. Pay attention to avoid overheating.
A utility type vehicle can transport people and supplies quickly in an emergency. Keep the vehicle stable and drive slowly. Consider taking a UTV safety course.
2) Always read and follow the safety and usage recommendations provided by outdoor power equipment manufacturers. Never disable safety features. Practice how to operate equipment before you need it—not until an emergency is at hand. Follow all recommended safety measures.
3) Have the right fuel on hand and charge batteries ahead of an outage. Most gasoline-powered equipment uses E10 or less fuel and most manufacturers recommend adding a fuel stabilizer. Fuel that is more than 30 days old may cause running problems, so it’s important to purchase fuel just ahead of a storm. Store fuel safely and use only an approved fuel container, and only recommended batteries.
4) Pay attention to your energy level and health. Preparation for bad weather, a power outage and storm cleanup can be taxing. Do not operate power equipment when tired or overly fatigued. Drink plenty of water and take regular breaks. Always use safety equipment like chaps, gloves, eye protection and hearing protection.
Five, keep children and pets away from operating power equipment. For further facts and tips, visit www.opei.org.

ASK EXPERTS the ASK EXPERTS
reduce your need for glasses for distance vision or near vision or both.
Q: When do I need cataract surgery? What are my options if I do?
A: A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens within the eye. Virtually all of us will get cataracts as we age. Cataract formation is usually a gradual process and vision changes can be subtle. Common symptoms include blurred or dim vision, sensitivity to light with glare, seeing halos, difficulty with night vision, and needing brighter light for reading. Often, the prescription of your glasses changes frequently, with diminishing improvements with each change.
By Aaron S. Wang, M.D. Ophthalmologist Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc
Ophthalmologists recommend a comprehensive eye exam to have your visual acuity measured and your eyes (pupils) dilated. A special microscope called a slit lamp is utilized to view and grade your cataract. You will be evaluated for other eye diseases, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration as well.
The decision to proceed with cataract surgery is based on how much the cataract interferes with your vision and daily activities. There is usually no rush, but the surgery can become more urgent if, for example, you fail to have adequate vision for driving.
Fortunately, cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective procedures. Typically, it is an outpatient procedure done under light intravenous (IV) sedation. Through microscopic incisions, your cloudy natural lens is emulsified; with ultrasonic energy and is replaced with a clear artificial lens. This artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). Your vision should significantly improve over the next few days as long as you use your prescribed post-surgical eye drops.
There are different surgical options, including upgrades that can be associated with out-of-pocket expenses. Standard cataract surgery with a basic IOL is covered by insurance. It is a fine option if you are comfortable wearing glasses for both distance and near vision after surgery. Upgraded options leverage the latest technologies, including laser-assisted cataract surgery, intra-operative aberrometry, and premium IOLs (toric and/or multifocal IOLs). These technologies deliver customized surgery, address optical irregularities of your eyes, such as astigmatism, and minimize spectacle dependence. You can choose to
An ophthalmologist will meet with you for a cataract evaluation, with the intention of learning your individual visual needs, answering all of your questions, and guiding you toward the most appropriate option for which you may qualify. In addition to the options mentioned, an ophthalmologist can also offer “drop-less” cataract surgery if you have difficulty instilling eye drops. Typically, regardless of which surgical option is chosen, the surgery takes minutes, you leave without a stitch or patch, and the improvement is life changing.
A corneal sub-specialist, such as myself, can also perform a number of treatments concurrently with your cataract surgery if you have other co-existing eye diseases. An example includes the latest in corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK) for Fuchs’ Corneal Dystrophy. Another example is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) to lower your eye pressure. Combined surgery, when needed, provides convenience and the quickest route to your best possible vision.
Dr. Wang specializes in ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Wilmer Eye Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Shiley Eye Center, UC San Diego Health. Dr. Wang practices with Glaucoma-Cataract Consultants, Inc.

NEUROPATHY TREATMENT
South Hills Peripheral Neuropathy Sufferers Now Have Hope
Tri State Neuropathy Centers, one of the largest neuropathy treatment practices in the USA is currently scheduling patients at their Castle Shannon office, located at 3757 Library Road.
Over 30 million Americans suffer from neuropathy and its debilitating symptoms of painful cramping, burning and tingling, difficulty walking, numbness, and even interruption of sleep. Neuropathy has a devasting effect on normal activities that most people take for granted and enjoy. Some of the most common causes of neuropathy are related to diabetes, medications, chemotherapy, and back issues.
“Peripheral neuropathy is a chronic and progressive disease,” said Dr. Michael Renk of Tri State Neuropathy Centers. “Left untreated, peripheral neuropathy will only get worse. It is best to treat it.”
Since 2013, the eight regional Tri State Neuropathy Centers have steadily grown and successfully treated over 11,000 patients with an advanced technology protocol that addresses the causes of neuropathy rather than the symptoms. The program is noninvasive, painless, drug-free, and is FDA-approved.
This Spring, have Tri State Neuropathy Centers help you get back to enjoying all the activities that you love.
To schedule an initial no-cost consultation, call 412-207-2398. Learn more at www.marydancedin.com.

In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer “employment” but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in US dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
