NIGHT BLITZ TEEN JAILED DANIEL ROBBINS
A teenager has been jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to raping a student in Nottingham. Darryn Bradshaw, 18, is said to have dragged the victim off a street before robbing her mobile phone and then repeatedly raping her. The rape occurred after Bradshaw had been staying
with his family for one week and it was revealed that he had no previous convictions for sexual offences. At the time the victim had tried to convince her attacker that she was pregnant but he accused her of lying. Bradshaw also failed to give a reason for the attack that happened on October 11 last year. Judge Michael Stokes QC said, “You are unfit for the
society of decent people. “You have pleaded guilty to one of the worst offences of rape I have had to deal with. “There are thousands of young women in this city studying at one or other of our universities or colleges. “They are entitled to walk in the streets of this city without being subjected to robbery and rape, and it is the duty of the court to punish young
men like you who treat them in this disgusting way.” The court was told that on the night in question Bradshaw stripped her clothes off and raped her three times before threatening her life if she didn’t keep quiet. However, the woman flagged a taxi straight away before reporting the offence at a police station where Bradshaw was traced by DNA.
The court was told that since his arrest, Bradshaw has been bullied and beaten in custody. He received nine years plus another two to run concurrently for the robbery. He will serve two-thirds of the overall time and when he is released he will be on an extended licence for five years.

Staying safe is easy with help DANIEL ROBBINS Front page continued University Paper’s tips to staying safe: 1. If you are out at night, make sure you are with a friend and if not ring a taxi. Don’t risk walking somewhere. 2. Charge your phone before you head out so you have means of contacting someone if something is wrong. 3. Plan your night ahead by agreeing with your friends when you will leave the club. 4. Keep your drink with you at all times. 5. Also, you could buy a distress alarm so if you are in trouble someone will hear it. Alarms can be found on Amazon from £6.35. 6. Always let someone know from your house or halls where you are going and when you should be back. 7. Also make sure you get in a licensed taxi. 8. If you do have to walk home make sure to stick to lighted streets. 9. Refer to Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham’s websites for more details on how to stay safe when heading out.

In last month’s issue someone wrote in to talk about the level of noise during student nights out and whilst that is a big problem indeed there is another part of nights out that causes problems; litter! You have a large circulation and reach a lot of students so you were the obvious choice to write in to and try and talk some sense into the litterers within the city. I won’t name the company names of their boxes that fall on the floor as it isn’t their issue but every week the litter problem seems to get greater and greater. I urge the students of our city to appreciate the place for what it is and not to leave their rubbish everywhere after a night out. Obviously I know I live in a student city and should expect the odd bit of noise but litter is something that shouldn’t have to be dealt with by us who walk to work the next morning. I don’t want to stop students having fun but ultimately I don’t want to see cardboard boxes all over the pavement as well.

Students take to the streets for charity EMMA PAGE

The chief executive of Comic Relief will join Nottingham Trent in July as the new Chancellor of the University. It is thought that Sir Michael Parkinson, who was the first Chancellor for the University when the position was created six years ago, will remain close with the University and continue his fundraising for the John van Geest Cancer Research centre which runs from Clifton. According to The Complete University Guide, which used crime statistics from the three miles surrounding major UK campuses, Nottingham has made it into the top ten. Areas around Nottingham Trent University had a grand total of 2.05 incidents per 1000 people, while the University of Nottingham reached 2.39. Lenton, which borders the NTU campus, has seen the highest number of crimes, compared to Clifton which is said to be ‘much quieter’ than previously. The city with the highest crime rate overall was Hull, which boasted 2.58 crimes per 1000 people. Following on from their latest report, The Complete University Guide released some tips on staying safe while at university. These include precautions such as making sure your

I was pleased to share my experience in travelling to Nepal and trekking to Annapurna base camp. “He asked if I had got lost, got blisters and survived and he was really friendly and often made people laugh. A Nottingham university has been named as one of the best in the world after a recent survey revealed its top subjects. The University of Nottingham is now ranked in the top 200 world universities according to a survey by the QS world rankings, which now feature 16 of the universities subjects in the top 100. The accolade comes after more than 3,000 universities were surveyed, leading to total of 689 being ranked within the listings. Subjects from the University of Nottingham that ranked highly include Pharmacy, which is 9th, Education at 28th, and Agriculture and Forestry at 34th. I know it’s bad but I’ve started to get feelings for my best friend’s boyfriend and think he might feel the same. We flirt a lot when she isn’t there and seem to have a real connection. What shall I do? The thrill of liking someone you shouldn’t is one that a lot of us have and will experience. But in reality this is your best friend and you could hurt her very badly! Behaving like this is putting your friendship at jeopardy so you need to weigh up if it’s worth losing that if you act on your feelings. In my personal opinion I’d put your friendship first and find someone unattached that you can flirt with, try to think how you’d feel if they did this to you.
I love my housemates to pieces but the way they act sometimes really upsets me! They go out a lot in the week and always wake me up even though they know I have early lectures. It seems a silly thing to be getting upset about but it’s really starting to get to me. What should I do? The best thing you can probably do is sit them down and explain exactly how you are feeling. You shouldn’t feel silly if it’s upsetting you and at the end of the day they should take your feelings (and sleep!) into consideration. Having said that, it’s likely that they don’t realise the impact of their actions; as we all act differently when we’re drunk and having a good time! At least if you make them aware, they have the opportunity to be more cautious next time. In the meanwhile, it might be worth investing in some ear plugs! Good luck!
Sensational: Ellie Goulding brought her looks and her vocals to her gig in Nottingham
rit award winner Ellie Goulding left fans well and truly starry eyed last night as she lit up the Capital FM arena with sequins, laser beams and a very daring outfit. Performing in what’s been an incredible year for her so far, the star wowed with her humble attitude towards her success, making fans fall in love with her even more. Opening the show with Figure 8, the Best British female winner and former Critics Choice winner leapt on stage wearing a nude all in one with black panels and a hooded silver sequin jacket and followed her entrance with the crowd-pleaser Ritual. The atmosphere was electric as she danced around stage and performed a catalogue of hits including Anything Could Happen and her latest single Goodness Gracious. For someone who told fans she isn’t a very good dancer, she made the stage her own; making it hard to believe when she repeatedly told fans she wasn’t used to such a big audience. As one of her first arena gigs, the show she put on for adoring fans ensured it certainly won’t be her last. It wasn’t long before she declared to a packed arena that she wanted the energy to ‘go through the roof’ and asked fans to dance along to ‘I Need Your Love’
‘The atmosphere was electric as she danced around the stage’
with her own mum even making an appearance on the screens behind the stage dancing along to the hit. Performing hits from her two studio albums Lights and Halcyon, she dedicated Starry Eyed to her early fans, saying she couldn’t have done it all without them. But it was when she took to an acoustic guitar to perform Guns and Roses that we saw what Ellie was all about. Transitioning between upbeat dance vibes and slow ballads it’s clear that this will be the first of many sell-out arena venues for the 27-year-old. Footage of Ellie and her band lit up the square screens with arty shots and montages leaving fans stunned. The party mode toned down as she performed How Long Will I love You, a cover she told the crowd she wished she had written herself, along with Elton John’s Your Song. But her energy filled the 9,000 seat venue once more when she performed the hit Explosion which left fans screaming for more when she declared the next song would be her last with a cheeky wink.
Bugg rocks Capital on first visit “They keep telling me I’m older than I’m supposed to be,” croons Jake Bugg in front of a full house at the Capital FM Arena. stage in his career. It took him less than a minute to prove those doubters wrong. Openers ‘There’s A Beast’, ‘We All Feed It’ and ‘Trouble Town’ kick-started the concert
at a frantic pace, and when he started ‘Seen It All’ the crowd were in full swing, singing every word back to him. After the fast-paced start Bugg settled into his more familiar bluesy style, with ‘Me and You’ and ‘Storm Passes Away’ delighting the crowd, who are an eclectic range of ages from toddlers to teens to 40-something mods all the way to pensioners, highlighting the wide appeal of Bugg’s music. Bugg’s Two Fingered tribute to his hometown evoked the
best crowd reaction of the night so far. It was when the band left the stage and Jake was solo that the concert hit its highest point. ‘Pine Trees’ warmed the crowd up before an extremely emotional and heartfelt rendition of ‘Broken’, the best song of the night. Every person sung along with Jake, who when it finished was very humble saying only, “Thank you for making this night very special.” Bugg closed the set with old
school rock’n’roll ‘Slumville Sunrise’ and ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’, prompting mosh pits to form. When he returned for his encore, Bugg played another acoustic sing-along, ‘A Song About Love’. But he was always going to finish with a bang, with signature tune ‘Lightning Bolt’ getting the crowd bouncing. With this show Jake Bugg proved he is more than ready to play arenas, and that the future is limitless for the little bloke from Clifton.

“It was a strange gig in Nottingham last night but with a really satisfying ending”
European Adventure pleases Ezra George Ezra subtlety hopped onto the Bodega stage last night, no fan fare or indication that this guy finished in the top five of the hugely influential BBC Sound of 2014. Throughout the gig he told anecdotes, talked about his travels which greatly inspired the album and of course wowed the entire audience with his charm, guitar skills and haunting yet beautiful vocals. This isn’t the first time Ezra has hit the Nottingham music scene, he was here two years ago playing in the Rescue Rooms, but said his return to The Bodega was strange as he wasn’t sure the audience were “on his side” throughout but said the show ended well. I like to think he was referring to his impressive title track of the upcoming EP ‘Did You Hear The Rain’ which left audiences waiting for at least five minutes to see if George was going to come back out for an encore. While he didn’t give his fans the encore they wanted he did hang around to enjoy the delights of Gold Teeth, a Thursday night favourite for R ‘n’ B fans at The Bodega and stayed for ‘a little dance.’ I spoke to George about the inspiration behind the upcoming album and he

I didn’t know what I was expecting from it. I was amazed at how much I benefitted from doing it. I went by myself and I think because of that I benefitted in a different way. I think it was the first time in a long while that I did something on my own as normally I like to have someone next to me that I can poke but this was different.” This isn’t too surprising as one of George’s most well known tracks is called Budapest although at the gig he explained that he never actually got to visit the Hungarian capital. He told the excitable audience that this was actually because he ended up having way too much fun in Sweden. In a somewhat random chat between songs he told of how he was in Sweden when the Eurovision song contest was on and he thought the only way he was going to get through it was with a bit of drink inside him. His life sounds pretty great doesn’t it? Well I asked George what he would be doing now had he not rocketed to fame with his music and it turns out he was a student himself. Studying
music in Bristol, he dropped out after his first year to pursue his music career. What a brilliant choice! I tried my best to squeeze out of George which festivals he’ll be at this summer but he told me he best keep his mouth shut. The good news for Ezra fans is that the EP is out now as is his first video and the new album should be coming your way by June or July just in time for the festival sunshine where we might be seeing more of him. FilmReview LUCY ACTON Endless Love This passionate and emotional drama is one to see but not without your tissues and a box of chocolates (and maybe a tub of ice cream too)! Innocent girl Jade Butterfield meets handsome and rough David (played by the gorgeous Alex Pettyfer, but that’s just a bonus!) and the attraction between them is instant. However, as their love blossoms, Jade’s parent become concerned and surprise, surprise this love will not prove easy. Well come on, it would be a very short film if they all lived happily ever after straight away. Alex Pettyfer is a fantastic actor and if you can concentrate on his acting rather than his amazing chiselled jaw line and piercing eyes, you’ll see he has a real talent. This film is a re-work of the best-selling novel by Scott Spencer and the 1981 film. It has now been directed again for a modern audience and there has been a lot of criticism and arguments that there was no need to remake the previous film in the first place but I have to say, it has been done very well. It feels modern and you’ll feel like you know the characters, become involved in their lives and leave looking like you’ve had an allergic reaction to a new eye moisturiser you’ve tried out. Described as being a perfect film for hot blooded romantics, this is definitely one to see for anyone who believes in fairy tale love. If you don’t leave blubbering, you’ve not got a heart. It has to be 4/5 stars for me!

Embarking on their first tour, Room 94 had a lot to say “IT IS STRANGE HAVING SO MANY FANS IN POLAND BUT NOT MANY BANDS GO THERE” DANIEL ROBBINS 1. How does it feel to be embarking on your UK tour? We are really excited as we have done all the support tours up and down the country and are excited about the prospect of being on our own tour. These are set to be our biggest shows so it is a mixture of nerves and excitement. 2. How much did you enjoy being support acts for Lawson and Union J? We got on with Lawson really well and they gave us loads of tips on how to make it to where they are. We also notice the further north we went the rowdier the crowds got so we are looking forward to starting in Nottingham and especially Rescue Rooms which we have played a couple of times before. 3. How exciting will 2014 be for the band with the
Serious: The band are determined to make the most of their chance after getting the chance to go on Radio 1 likes of your first album coming out as well as a DVD? The album is obviously really exciting but the DVD is a little bit different in the fact it aims to give a behind the scenes look at our time as a band. We have filmed everything since 2010 and it has covered the fun stuff, as well as serious happenings. 4. Is it weird how many fans you have managed to get in Poland? Yes it is pretty strange as not
many bands go to Poland. It all started when Keiron and Dean did a One Direction cover which Polish fans loved on Twitter. They are really passionate about their music and it is an amazing, if not weird feeling when you are being mobbed by hundreds of fans at the airport. 5. What would you all be doing if you weren’t in a band? That’s a tough one really as all we have ever known is music. Kit would probably be

We always work towards little milestones if possible and out do what we did the last day. The album and tour are our most recent milestones but playing at a venue such as London KOKO
was immense as we have all been there before to watch other artists but to perform there is unreal. 7. Who are your idols and why? We’ve always loved listening to bands such as Blink 182 and All Time Low as that was the trend when we started out. However, since then we’ve listened to everything from Drake to cheesy pop and take influences in order to adapt our style so we don’t get boring.

48 hours of fashion to be opened by student’s poem DANIEL ROBBINS Nottingham Trent University will take centre stage at this year’s 48 hours of fashion as a student’s poem is read to crowds to kick off the event. Funmi Odeyemi, 19, will hear her winning poem ‘My Hidden Nottingham’ after it was crowned the winner of the 2013 Young Creative Awards. After moving to Nottingham from Nigeria in 2012, Funmi completed a foundation degree in Art & Design before beginning a degree in product design. After being a spectator at last year’s event, she will get the chance to be vital part of the show this year with her poem part of a sequence of opening events. “I loved watching 48 Hours
Spectacular: Expect to see more scenes like these when the Fashion Week rolls into town of Fashion last year so to be part of it and have my poem featured this year is an absolute delight,” she said.
After agreeing for her poem to be used, Funmi and a friend have been invited to attend the VIP event on the
Friday evening before the event starts on the Saturday. Here she will hear her poem for the first time where she
will be joined by retailers and restaurant owners from the city as well as key names from the fashion industry.
Nottingham Business Improvement District’s director said she can’t wait for the event to start and to be able to showcase Funmi’s work. “It’s really great that we can use events such as 48 Hours of Fashion as a platform for young creative like Funme,” she said. “We can’t wait to celebrate the city’s fashion scene with the people of Nottingham and beyond. It’s expected to be a really popular event.” Funmi’s poem will be central to all proceedings across the weekend of March 29-30. Shows take place every hour from 11am-5pm on Saturday 29 March and from 11am-4pm on Sunday 30 March with ‘My Hidden Nottingham’ read out at the start of each show and will be accompanied by an on-stage partner dance.

Ryan Farrell to have his designs stocked by ASDA for G21 Talent

A
fashion design graduate from Nottingham Trent University will see his African-inspired prints on the rails of George at Asda after the retailer asked him to design a collection for its’ newest fashion label – G21 Talent. Ryan Farrell’s nine designs, including a shirt, dress, skirt and T-shirts, will be sold in nine Asda superstores across the country as well as internationally via the retailer’s fashion website from next month. He was asked to create the women’s collection after talent spotters were wowed by his bold, colourful prints – showcased as part of Nottingham Trent University’s catwalk show at last year’s Graduate Fashion Week, which George sponsors. He took his inspiration from his own South African heritage. “I’m from South Africa and lived there for 21 years

However, when you do begin rampantly purchasing be sure to not overdo it when getting dressed! It is better to incorporate these unique pieces than swamp yourself in them. them so be keen and persist. When browsing double check your items. As vintage clothing is ‘pre-loved’ there are often pieces that are slightly damaged and even those beyond your tender and loving repair. Don’t just think of clothing but also the use of accessories. If it is classic, go wild with statement pieces and if it is not, then leave your retro outfit to simply do the talking.

“WE INSTANTLY FELL IN LOVE WITH RYAN’S COLLECTION” before moving to England,” said Ryan, 31, who lives in Chesterfield. “I looked at the Ndebele tribe and at their distinctive pattern work. Then I moved on to focus on the animals and how I can manipulate them to make them my own and then I looked at street culture in the communities and villages and all the rustic arts on the houses and shop fronts.” Ryan spent two months at George’s headquarters following his graduation last year, working on his designs for their limited edition G21 Talent label. “George wanted me to take my graduate collection and then put it in a commercial way to sell it which I found a really interesting process,” said Ryan. “I learned a lot from working there. Spring is a beautiful time of year. Flowers are blooming, the ice is melting, and new life in sheep form is being born into the world. It’s wonderful…and not so wonderful at the same time. Whilst the flowery, ‘sunshiney’, ‘springy’ world is waiting right outside our doorstep, many of us find ourselves throwing a tantrum in our rooms about what to wear on a spring day. On the one hand, the sun is shining (hopefully), so naturally we want to reach for our cute floral dresses that we so yearned to wear in winter but were completely ruined by tights. On the other hand we realise we are in England, after all, and although it’s spring, it’s still freezing out there. So, how do you dress for spring? How do you transition from your newly stocked winter wardrobe into spring? I shall attempt to answer these questions my friends. When it comes to this time of year we are all admittedly getting a little sick of scarves, thick socks and the endless task of layering without looking like the Michelin man on a fat day. Spring opens the door to pastels, florals, dresses and skirts, and fear not, there are a lot of ways you can hit these trends bang on whilst still being weather savvy. A go to piece will always be a fine knit in my eyes. Instead of a thick, woolly number that will be sure to cause some unattractive perspiration, pick a finer piece in a lighter colour. Try a mint or pastel pink jumper with a boat neck, pair it with some ankle grazers with a quirky print and some lightweight ankle boots and you’re there. And yes, I know- boots and shorter trousers used to be a fashion faux pas, but apparently ankle cleavage is all the rage. Who would have thought? Topshop or Asos are definitely your best bets to find your key spring pieces. And don’t tell anyone but Asos is giving us all a cheeky 20% off in spring wear.

PORK IS ONE OF THOSE FANTASTIC CUTS OF MEAT FOR EVERY OCCASION Chicken Stock Seasoning Pork Sauce 300g Pork Bones (Cooked until brown) 300g Chicken Stock 150ml Red Wine 50ml Madeira Pinch Lemon Juice to Taste Method: 1). Firstly start by placing all the spices into a pan (Except the zest and garlic) and dry roast them until fragrant, approximately 5 minutes on a medium heat. Once toasted place all the spices into a muslin bag and tie with string, place the spice bag into a pan and the cold tap water, now bring to the boil gently, then allow to cool. 2). Once cooled completely discard the spice bag and place the water into a flat container, then place your pork belly into the water and allow to sit for 12 hours or overnight covered in the fridge. 3). After 12 hours discard

Now pre-heat your oven to 150oC, and place your vegetables and water in the bottom of the tray, now place a wire rack on top of the tray and place the pork belly onto the wired rack wrapping the whole tray tightly with tin foil. Now allow to cook for 3 hours. Once 3 hours have passed remove the pork belly from the oven and allow to cool before removing the tin foil. 5). Now your pork belly has completely cooled place it into a greaseproof lined plastic tray, then place another tray on top along with a few weighty cans and place into the fridge overnight or until ready to cook, we are pressing the pork belly to achieve a
perfect shape and taste. 6). Now for the potatoes take your barrel shaped potatoes and place them in a pan with a little olive oil and slowly caramelise until golden on both sides. Once golden place into a roasting tray and season then add chicken stock to come up to a quarter up the side of the potato, then roast at 180oC for 30 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. 7). Now boil the carrots for 5 minutes in salted water, once boiled drain and place onto a roasting tray with a few knobs of butter and roast for 10 minutes at 180oC. 8). To finish cooking the pork belly firstly start by removing from the fridge and trim to make a rectangular shape, then portion into small rectangles. Place the pork belly skin side down into a pan on a low-medium heat for approximately 10 minutes
until it starts crackling, then place into the oven at 180oC for 20 minutes, the last 5 minutes flip the pork belly so the skin is no longer touching the pan. 9). For the sauce place the pork bones and chicken stock into the pan and reduce by half, once reduced add the wine and Madeira and again reduce by half. Once reduced the sauce should be a little thicker, strain through a sieve and add lemon juice to taste. If the sauce is too rich just add a little water. To assemble: Take the cooked pork belly and season very lightly with salt then place onto the plate, Take the cooked drained fondant potatoes and place next to the pork belly, then finally take the carrots and season with salt and pepper, then serve with the pork sauce.
Flat food fun NICOLE COTTRELL
Whether you’ve spent the entire day at university or you’ve been running round like a headless chicken attempting to complete all the jobs on your to-do list, cooking can become a little tiresome. Why don’t you inject some fun into it in the form of your very own Come Dine With Me. I’m sure most of
you have spent many a day watching backto-back episodes of Come Dine, so why not get your mates together and take it in turns to cook a slap up meal. It doesn’t have to be something fancy, just tasty... okay, edible. You can use recipes from the Channel 4 website or be inventive and come up with your own ideas to impress.
The beauty of this is you get meals cooked for you a few nights on the trot and there won’t be a pot noodle in sight (fingers crossed). So get ready to make the most of your cooking skills, to provide meals for all to enjoy whilst being able to have a laugh at that one person who makes beans on toast as their main meal.
Ingredients: Tomato puree, one onion, one pepper, one teaspoon of garlic, beef Oxo cube, a tin of chopped tomatoes, a packet of mince, one teaspoon of sweet chilli powder and one tea spoon of mixed herbs. With Mother’s Day almost upon us, you must be wondering what you can do to show your gratitude. I mean, you could buy your mum a ticket to a spa day or purchase a necklace, but nothing shows appreciation like a home cooked meal. Some of you might be thinking that buying a present would be a lot simpler and a lot less time consuming but luckily, pasta bolognese is cheap, quick and delicious. Start off with a pan full of mince and heat it on a medium temperature. Once fully cooked, turn down the heat and make sure you get rid of all the excess fatty oils by draining the mince. Add a few squirts of tomato puree along with some chopped tomatoes for added flavour. Next, chop up an onion and a pepper into tiny segments and fry for seven minutes before adding them to the mixture. Wash out the tomato tin, place a crushed Oxo cube in the bottom, fill the tin with hot water and then add it to the mix. For some added zing, you can add a teaspoon of garlic, sweet chilli powder and mixed herbs and let the pan heat until the mince is piping hot. The bolognese should then be served with pasta (a cheeky slice of garlic bread on the side won’t hurt either). Simplicity and flavour is the main attraction of this particular classic dish. It’s not hard to master in the slightest, can be whipped up in about 45 minutes and if made correctly, will certainly impress.

The places every student must go to eat this month ZOE ARCHER
Nottingham is full of great places to eat and being a student does not mean you should miss out. One of the great advantages is the student card. From cheap clothes to discount dinners (and I’m not talking about the free cheeseburger at McDonald’s). Here are some restaurants that offer great deals both with and without the flash of a student card: Chiquitos If Mexican is your cup of tequila then head to Chiquitos located in The Cornerhouse. The meals here are a little more pricey but if you simply show your student card when asking for the bill,
you’ll receive 25% off. It’s an offer no one can refuse. Ask Italian, Prezzo and Zizzi’s If you’re crazy about pasta and pizza and even more crazy about getting a bargain, then why not head to Ask, Prezzo or Zizzi’s. All three of these great Italian chains offer 25% off the food bill for students. The Slug and Lettuce Also located in The Cornerhouse, The Slug and Lettuce offer great discounts and not just for students. Every Monday they slash 50% off your entire food bill - no student card required. It would be rude to say no.

R
educing your food waste is a great way to save money as well as tackle a huge problem in the UK. Here are some tips how: - Create a shopping list so you won’t buy what you already have. - Use food bags and Tupperware to store your food so as to keep it fresh. - Separate your food waste from your general waste. Your house should be equipped with a caddie bin (a small square brown bin). Once this bin is full place the food waste into the bigger brown bin and it can be recycled accordingly. Also it will protect your food from animals such as foxes and rats. - Be creative with your meals, use leftover food for some sort of Bubble and Squeak style meal.

f you are anything like me, you need little excuse to get hammered, and seeing as the March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve brought you some good old cocktail recipes to bring you the luck of the Irish. We have trawled high and low to bring you the broadest of St. Patrick’s Day cocktails around and this is what we have come up with. Try these out over the coming month and tweet @TheUniPaper or Facebook us your efforts. The first was the Irish Julep (£4): - Pick the mint and place into the glass - Pour in crushed ice - Add 50ml Jameson’s whiskey - Churn it all aroundAdd in half a shot of Sugar Syrup
‘However if you are anything like me you’ll probably be too lazy to make them yourself’ The second was the shooter, the Aqua bomb (£2): Agwa is a new green liquor available in shops made from cocoa leaves - Mix half Agwa and half red bull into a double shot. Our third and final cocktail was the Shamrock Mojito (£4): - Pick 10 mint leaves and place into glass - Add 50ml of Agwa - Add 12.5ml of sugar syrup - 25ml of Lime juice - Churn around top with crushed ice and Churn again with a long spoon.
St Patrick’s threesome: The Irish Tulip (left) Agwa and the Shamrock Mojito (right)
- Top with crushed ice - Add a splash of soda water (optional) However if you are anything like me you’ll probably be too
lazy to make them yourself so head on over to The Big Chill and let the professionals handle it while you slip into an alcohol-induced stupor.

Red World Hot Buffet: What makes it one of the best in town? EMMA PEARCE
When I arrived in Red Hot I was whisked through passport control shown to my seat and was taken on a journey through
the culinary delights of the globe. This place is truly world class. A concern at intercontinental buffets is that none of the cuisine is up to standard but
Red Hot provided consistently high-quality food. The curry was creamy, the duck pancakes were delicious and the pizza was well… perfect. One of my highlights was the
Indian section where I saw a peshwari naan made in front of me. However, the desert section was the highlight of the whole experience. Pancakes were cooked to order and you could
ask to have anything on them. I went for pear and ice cream and it was the perfect choice. I have nothing bad to say about this place as it caters for all taste buds.

Hopping around Croatia Europe is brimming with places to go on little Easter breaks MEG DAVIES Each year, people from all corners of the world flock to Croatia for a dose of music, parties and summer weather at one of its many music festivals. Perhaps one of these festivals is on your ‘to-do’ list for this summer. Rightly so but don’t stop there. The unique nature of a Croatian holiday lies with its islands. Beautifully scattered along the coast, each island has its own vibe. Logistically, a Croatian holiday must start on the mainland before you hit the islands. Start with Dubrovnik. ‘The unique nature of a Croatian holiday lies with its islands’ historic city, with its cobbled streets and varied nightlife, is an ideal place to begin. When I went to Croatia in 2013, I found Dubrovnik to be one of the more expensive parts of the country but even there, eating and drinking out in the town needn’t be too steep. With enough haggling, restaurants will frequently offer discounts and, if you’re really lucky, a free shot of
Rakia (not for the fainthearted). Then head up north to the town of Split, the easiest gateway to the Islands. In Split, make sure you do the legendary ‘Clock Tower Bar Crawl’ - the perfect antidote to the sophistication of Dubrovnik and a great way to meet other travellers. After that, the choice is yours. Choose a few islands (I would
recommend 3-5 days on each) and create your ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ Croatian holiday. For wild (and fairly cheap) beach parties, head to the island of Pag (the home of Hideout festival) and for huge stretches of exquisite beaches, quirky bars and water sports, Brac is the island to visit. My personal favourite was Hvar. Despite its glamorous reputation, you can enjoy
this island on a low budget if you’re clever about it: there are plenty of cheap hostels. If you do splash out in Hvar, then go to Carpe Diem club. At around £17 for entry, it’s not cheap but, located on its own little island off Hvar (boat ride included in the entry fee), with excellent music, lights and hammocks, there’s a reason it’s popular with backpackers.
Now a member of the EU, it is hard to imagine that Croatia will remain such an unspoilt Elysian retreat for long. Don’t just go to the festivals; explore the whole country before it gets completely flooded with tourists. Keep a lookout for our competitions, we may have a surprise! ADVICE

A helping hand for Mother’s Day gifts ABBY MCHALE Makeup, perfume and flowers are all typical gifts people will be giving this mother’s day. This is the one day dedicated to those special women in our lives, and showing them how much you appreciate them. If you are struggling to think of anything to give them, then look no further as I have compiled a list of ideas that fit a student friendly budget. Days out – instead of buying your mum a materialistic gift why not treat her for the day with an outing like afternoon tea for two or a spa day. Tea for two can range from as little as £12 on Asda’s website. Websites like Groupon offer great deals on days out too. Get creative – as students we often don’t have a lot of money at the best of times never mind splashing cash on a present. Why not make something for your mum, be it a card or a painting if you’re arty or cook them a meal. They will feel just as loved if not more so as it shows you have made an effort. Think about her interests – does she like gardening? Websites such as Girlie Gardening do great gardening packs. Does she enjoy
CareerTip
Lovely: Hand made cards like these will not break the bank and show you really care cooking? Why not treat her to a cooking class where she can learn new recipes. Does she have a favourite TV programme? Websites
such as SRO audiences give you the chance to have free tickets to be in the audience of your favourite programmes.
CV essentials Getting ahead in your career can be difficult so here are some helpful tips; keep in contact with your manager about your progress and ways to further yourself, volunteer to do extra work even if its unpaid (it looks good on your CV and may impress people). Also set yourself small but achievable goals each step of the way and be willing to step outside your comfort zone (it shows commitment and you’ll likely get recognised.) CASSANDRA SHIPLEY

Nottingham. Whatever you decide to do your mother will surely appreciate it so don’t panic too much.
The beginning of 2014 will be remembered for one annoying bird and its inability to fly in a straight line. The notorious Flappy Bird game gained almost overnight celebrity status due to its nearimpossible difficulty level. The retro game, only available on smart phones, received world-wide recognition and flew into number one, becoming the most
downloaded app for January 2014. In a game where the objective is as simple as guiding a bird through different sets of pipes, you would expect a relatively relaxed and friendly game. In reality you could not be further from the truth. Flappy Bird has already established itself in gaming folklore as possibly the most frustrating yet addictive game ever made. In fact, the game became too much for
creator Dong Nguyen, who removed the game from the app store after saying he was ‘not enjoying the celebrity status Flappy Bird had given him’. This prompted a number of gamers to sell their phones with the pre-installed game for some quite ridiculous sums of money, with some examples of bidding starting at $1499. It seems that one bird’s battle against gravity really can cause global gaming hysteria, even in the 21st century.
topBOOK Heart Thoughts: the self-help book that differs GEORGIA FARQUHARSON
Self-help books are usually known to be distanced and cold, aimed at women in their 40’s with struggling love lives or marital issues. The thought of having to pick up a ‘self-help’ book is a known sign of failure, but let’s face it, everyone could all do with a pick-me-up sometimes, and what better than some words of wisdom? Louise L. Hay’s ‘Heart Thoughts’ is a colourful, warm and innovative book filled with wise words to keep your mind at rest. Split into chapters depending on the issue you’re seeking advice on, Hay pulls together positive affirmations to fulfil an optimistic life. ‘Heart Thoughts’ is a beautifully illustrated collection of quotes to ease worries, anxiety and difficult. With chapters on forgiveness, change and limitations, there are words to soothe and heal your deepest worries. ‘We don’t have to be dependent on someone else; we have within us a tremendous capacity to make positive changes in our lives.’

Zuckerberg’s legacy is one not to be forgotten WILL WILSON
Genius: Facebook guru
In 2004, whilst studying Psychology and Computer Science at Harvard University in Boston, USA, Mark Zuckerberg created the social networking site that is now used by over a billion people across the globe - Facebook. Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Andrew McCollum are the co-found-
Easter breaks: how will you spend yours? DARCIE CHAMBERS With the third and final term at university fast approaching, the pressures of pending exams and dissertation handins are already sending stress levels soaring. Everyone needs a breather, and there’s nothing wrong in treating yourself to a get-away this Easter, so we’ve picked our favourite places for you to visit on a student budget. When you just have to get away from it all, a weekend break in London can provide the perfect few days escape without the hassle and expense of a full blown holiday further afield. The English capital plays host to more museums, attractions and West End theatres than you can shake a stick at. From the swish cocktail bars of Soho to the rough and readiness of Camden Town, it really is the city that never sleeps. Alternatively, while the dramatic windswept hills make
Edinburgh a sight to behold, its rich history and electric nightlife makes it a city to remember. Scotland’s showcase capital has everything, from castles steeped in history to ultra-chic hangouts in the New Town. With relaxed licensing hours too, a lot of city-centre bars are open until 3am making for a weekend packed with fun but not a lot of sleep! Venturing out into the continent, Prague is one of Europe’s best kept secrets – so whether you’re exploring the old town’s labyrinth of cobbled streets or strolling alongside the unspoilt riverside, you’ll find beauty around every corner of this city. The Czech capital is renowned for its barrel bars, and its local beer flowing cheaper than bottled water! And if that isn’t enough, Prague is also home to the largest club in central Europe with five floors of everything from deep house music to hip hop and dance-
ers and were also students at Harvard University at the time. Having recently celebrated its 10th birthday, Facebook now has 6337 employees and stores over 250 billion photos. Zuckerberg is married to Priscilla Chan, who he met in his second year of University in 2003. Last year, at the young age of 29, Mark Zucker-
berg, the CEO and founder of Facebook, became the youngest billionaire in the world. In 2011, The Social Network, the critically-acclaimed film starring Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, reconstructed the birth of Facebook and followed the lawsuits made against Zuckerberg by the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin; Zuckerberg’s friend and co-founder
of Facebook. Only last month, Facebook bought WhatsApp, the increasingly popular messaging application for smartphones used by many to avoid text message charges, for £11.4bn For Zuckerberg, reaching out to Mobile Web users is vital for Facebook’s future, stating in his keynote speech at the Mobile Web Congress
last month in which he said they aim to reach over a billion web users. It is difficult to predict how long the immense popularity of Facebook will last, but the company is currently worth $131bn and there are no signs of the social networking site fading away anytime soon.

If you’re like me and you find searching for a new hairdresser a bigger pain than your 9am lecture, this deal is definitely for you. ‘Bliss Hair’ salon on Mansfield road has a wide range of really good services. Plus if you’re a ‘Bliss Virgin’ or a customer who hasn’t been in for over 12 months you get 50% off your visit which is an amazing deal for a student on a tight budget. Magnificent: Sights like these are closer and easier to seek out than you might think hall. Finally, how could anyone resist a weekend in the original sin city that is Amsterdam? For students, this destination is one not short of appeal, offering everything from history, culture or just some plain old relaxing in an old and illustrious European city. One of the highlights of Amsterdam is its high-tolerance level to some of the more dubious activities such as the infamous Red Light District and their alternative take on your average coffee shop.
Money will not be a problem if you use your set of skills GRACE COYNE It is impossible to ask young people to be sure of a career path when they leave school at 16. So many throw themselves into the first job they find, while others jet off to university to study something they believe to have an interest
in. But the harsh truth is that many people reach their twenties realising they have taken the entirely wrong vocation. There is no need to worry; many degrees provide you with transferable and versatile skills that can open the door to other professions other than the one you are
specifically trained in. Most degrees will train people to have good communication skills to prepare you for any job that is out there. So don’t worry if you no longer want a career in the degree you’re studying and you realise it isn’t the one for you, there are other options.

Five questions for Olympic short track speed skater Jack Whelbourne
SPORT
March 2014

DANIEL ROBBINS Ahead of the World Championships, Jack Whelbourne had some time to answer questions for the UP on all things speed skating. 1. How did you first get into the sport? I did rugby from the age of two as my dad was all about rugby and I played for Paviors until I was ten. However, when I was six my sister had a friend who was speed skating and she went along to see what it was like. From there she came back told my parents that she thought I would like it and the rest is history. 2. How was the experience of going to the Sochi 2014 Games, your second Olympics? The Olympic Park in Russia was amazing as all the arenas
were close to each other and you could walk to every single venue. However, Vancouver did top it in my opinion as it was already an established Winter Olympics city and outside the village everything was normal. 3. What, in your opinion, are the best and worst parts of the sport? The worst part of the sport has to be the injuries. It is a sport of chance most of the time and most factors are out of your control and you can crash at any time. The best feeling is finishing races knowing you have overcome those worries and being able to stand back and say ‘I have done everything right in that race’. 4. What would you rank as your best achievement in the sport? That is a hard

Luke Simpson “The best part of winning was the convincing way in which it was done; in two events we took bronze silver and gold and took 11 podium places in total. “Moving forwards we hope to secure more funding for the competition side of the sport so we can carry on winning this event and push for wins in the other two BUCS canoe events.”

Matthew Footitt “It’s quite something to go to my first BUCS event and win medals, let alone the entire competition. I feel that we had a strong team, even if it was a small one! Every person played a key part in the weekend adding points to our total. “From here I think the canoe club could push slalom more, it’s a fast action sport that pushes you to the limit. Also, this way we’ll have a bigger team for next year getting us more points for a win!”

When it was announced that we had narrowly won over Newcastle everyone was extremely happy. We hope to continue our winning streak into next year!” The canoe slalom championship was held at Tees Barrage International White Water Course and the victory for Nottingham Trent University has earned it more than 150 points towards their overall BUCS league standings. This year the University hopes to improve even further on its success from last year when it came 17, its’ highest ever ranking. Alex Bailey, elite sport development officer at Nottingham Trent University, said, “A huge congratulations should go to all of the team that competed in Teesside. To achieve so many medals and win the event for the second year running with a team of just seven athletes is a fantastic achievement for which they should be extremely proud.”

The seven-man team, including Nottingham Trent University sports scholars and GB canoeists Tom Quinn, Ryan Westley, Zak Franklin and Alice Haining together with James Ibbotson, Matt Footit and Luke Simpson, put in a fantastic performance winning five of the six gold medals available. In the mixed team event and the men’s canoe doubles section, Nottingham Trent University occupied all three podium positions. James Ibbotson collected the overall trophy on behalf of the Nottingham Trent University team. He said, “As the overall results were announced in ascending order we all got nervous. n a blustery day at the Clifton Campus the Trent Renegades extended their all-time series record in the Varsity game against the University of Nottingham to 5-0, but not without a fight against a spirited Nottingham outfit. Coming in to the game Trent knew that they had already qualified for the play-offs but Nottingham’s hopes were on a knife edge and they desperately wanted the win. In the first quarter the Renegades were miscuing on offence and struggled to put together anything of consequence. The ever

The Miller to Boswell combination struck again, this time in the left hand corner of the endzone and Trent took the lead for the first time, a successful two point conversion made the score 14-7. As the Renegades took control, Great Britain running back Adam Hope ripped forty yards through Nottingham’s defence to somersault in to the endzone to stretch the Renegades lead to 20-7. Time was now running out for Nottingham as Trent applied the pressure. With the ball on the Nottingham one yard line Miller dived in to score and put the game out of sight at 26-7. With the last few seconds remaining on the clock Nottingham’s scrambling quarterback threw a desperation Hail Mary pass which miraculously ended up in the hands of a delighted team mate who raced in to the Trent endzone for a concellation score and a final result of 26-13 to Trent.

ust a day after Nottingham Trent went ahead for the first time in the 2014 Varsity series, two Basketball wins for the University of Nottingham turned the score back in their favour. Much like the events that transpired a year ago, the University Of provided two clinical performances on the court to take a 3-2 lead heading into swimming on March 12 2014.

Your problem or an issue for the landlord to sort? OLIVER STAINFORTH When renting a house while at university, the definition of a miracle is going throughout the whole tenancy without encountering any problems. If you’ve lived at home with your parents for most of your life, you’ll probably be accustomed to mum and dad checking the fire alarms and fixing that faulty radiator. Not at university though. While there is a temptation to call your landlord for every minor emergency, living away from home is all about learning to stand on your own two feet. Silly things such as changing light bulbs should not be your landlord’s responsibility. Not knowing how to change one is acceptable, but just Google how to change one rather than roping in your poor landlord to change it. It’s important to remember that your landlord is exactly
that, a landlord, not an agony aunt. If arguments develop between housemates, as responsible adults it’s your duty to come to a reasonable solution. There are occasions when landlords should definitely be contacted. Being burgled is one example, but anyone with common sense would realise the importance of contacting the police first - however your landlord would certainly like to know too. Some landlords hold property inspections similar to those in student halls, but some choose not to. Fire alarms are normally checked in such inspections but if your landlord leaves you to it, it is important to regularly check all of the alarms in the house are working properly. Without meaning to be too morbid – it could just save your life!

OLIVER STAINFORTH
t’s come to the time when, every year, students who are yet to find a house for next year start to believe they’re going to be spending it on the streets. If you are one of these people, don’t panic! There is still plenty of time to find a lovely humble abode. Last year the Nottingham Trent accommodation web-
site had 600 bed spaces left over so if you’ve been told that you will miss out if you don’t book early don’t believe a word of it! Some of the accommodation options are a little way out from campus but don’t be afraid to venture a little further into Nottingham. The accommodation here can often be cheaper and are
almost always located near to main tram or bus route. Away from University accommodation, Unipol Student Homes ensure students can find quality accommodation in the private sector. If you do decide to look for accommodation in the private sector, make sure your property is properly accredited using the Unipol DASH code
to ensure high standards. You may also wish to use the accommodation message board to meet students who are looking for, or have, accommodation available. All available accommodation opportunities and anything else you need to know can be found on www.ntu. ac.uk under the accommodation tab.
day from all areas of Nottingham. Discounted bus passes are also available through the university smartcard system. The same applies to those commuting to the Clifton and Brackenhurst campuses via bus. For more information on bus services and discounted passes, use the NCT Journey Planner on www.ntu.ac.uk. As you will probably know, the University has its very own tram stop. There are two main tram routes run-
ning all the way from Hucknall that pass most student areas. The fares are perhaps expensive, £2 for a single and £3.50 for a return, but again, a discounted long term pass is available, with more routes due to open in the next year or so through Clifton. If you wish to drive into University, parking is limited in Nottingham city centre so it is recommended to park at the Forest Fields car park and hop on a tram from there.
The Ucycle student bike hire scheme is a great way for students to get around campus. Different sized bikes are available to hire for the academic year from just £35. All in all, there are numerous ways to get to and from university meaning those bright and early starts don’t always have to be so bright and early. No excuses for missing those 9am lectures!
