As the saying goes – what happens on tour, stays on tour. That is, of course, until something ridiculous or hilarious happens and then the whole of the society – if not the entire university – knows you as the guy who had an embarrassing mishap with an inanimate object. This year, the Trent army haven’t failed to amuse us with their witty tour stories; punching of fresher’s, public posting of genitals and drunk chanting about Wayne Rooney. We’ve heard it all and here are the best. From the simplistic shaving of ‘NTU’ into the back of your hair or, with even more dedication, a
whole N number being tattooed on your foot. To the dangerous, one girl suffered with such a bad allergic reaction to a henna tattoo on her face that she was rushed to hospital. Before even arriving at the hotel, a sports society member was kicked off the tour bus for being sick everywhere and yet managed to beat the whole bus to the hotel. For one student, it was the sheer reality that a hockey stick was so far up his backside that it left him hospitalised with five stitches. Definitely not the wisest of moves.

The NTU tour stories revealed LAUREN LEE Front page continued As mentioned by comedian Russell Howard, “I accidently fell on it” is not a believable explanation. We all hope for the guys sake that it was either a dare or he was entirely intoxicated. One student was so drunk, he asked for his taxi driver to take him to Clifton and the driver continued to drive around the strip for half an hour. After a while, the student realised he was getting nowhere and jumped to the conclusion that he was being kidnapped – which led to him throwing money at the driver and jumping out of the moving car. That isn’t the end either but it is all we have space for in this edition. Have you got any embarrassing tour stories? Tweet us @TheUniPaper and tell us your tour stories. There have been some weird emails sent to us in the past but this one regarding weird dreams is up there with the best! So one night, whilst out on a mission with my team of mercenaries, we came across a large shark who I attempted to shoot. This didn’t work, so we threw children’s socks at it. The shark stood up, collected all the socks and said thank you, then came fully clothed to work on our team! AND! I was doing a traffic safety check with Peter Andre when two women came and gave us some stick - so I followed them into a stately home where I tried to strangle the larger lady with a net curtain cord. I didn’t kill her and when she came round she was much nicer to me! Any more of our readers have weird dreams? Let us know and you might be featuring in next month’s edition (all anonymous of course!)

Ambitious students build school for deaf in Kenya GEORGI SCURFIELD A team of 40 volunteers from Nottingham are planning to go to Kenya this August to build a school for 200 deaf teenagers. Project Riandu was started by third year architecture student, Peter Macnaughton from the University of Nottingham, and has two main aims. Firstly to address the need for a school for deaf teenagers in Riandu, Kenya; and secondly, perhaps more ambitiously is also trying to tackle the local prejudice which has left a gap where those with special needs can miss out on an education. There are only five secondary schools for the deaf in Kenya (here in the UK there are 23) - none of which are in the eastern area of the

Trent makes statement in Nottingham skyline RYAN JOHNS Nottingham Trent’s student union has been shortlisted for a major architecture award. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) revealed the Byron building on Trent’s City campus as one of 11 buildings in the East Midlands to be shortlisted for the award. The union, which has been open since September, got its official opening this month by Olympic legend Lord Sebastian Coe CBE, who was the driving force behind the London 2012 Olympic Games. The building, which has seen the NTU student union come back to the city campus, is home to a state-of-the-art gym, a 30ft climbing wall and live music venue, and also houses 911 students in flats built above. Built by VINCI construction UK, the building cost £60 million, and is part of a £350 million investment into Trent’s three main campuses, which recently saw Newton and Arkwright buildings undergo a £90 million renovation. for a month at the end of the summer to start the building work which will be completed in 2017.
Part of the architecture team have already been out to the site where the build will take place to get a lay out of the land and are working really hard to create an effective, lasting resource which will be funded by the government once established. Project Riandu are still looking for volunteers to be involved in the build at the end of April. It will be a high intensity quick learning experience that will challenge you to try new things. Prestigious: University of Nottingham’s China campus is home to over 6,000 students and will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year
Tenth anniversary for UoN’s China campus NATALIE ROBINSON
The University of Nottingham’s prestigious China campus is set to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its official opening this year. The Ningbo Campus, located in Eastern China, officially opened in 2004 and is now home to over 6,000 students, both undergraduate and postgraduate.
The campus, which awards University of Nottingham degrees, teaches classes in English to students both from China and the UK. The introduction of a China campus came in a bid to internationalise the University of Nottingham’s image, which has also seen them setting up a base in Malaysia. Students have also praised the campus, which in recent
years has seen many students from the UK campus’ going to Ningbo to study. Goda Rabačiūté, who studied for a year at the campus said, “Obviously all places have pros and cons, but I really enjoyed my time at the China campus because you get a different feeling of community there. “It’s great because you are forced to communicate with people outside of your
course and from different backgrounds, which isn’t always the case here at the University Park Campus because it’s so big.” She said, “I got to know an extremely diverse group of people and we went to lectures together and went out together so in a way we became like a family. “I don’t regret going to China, it gave me a taste of other cultures and I would

Maddie Levis said, “Something like this would really help our course, it would definitely be something I think, all of us would look into.” Senior Lecturer Karen Bartlett alongside industry expert Mary Charlton put in the request for the funds which were accepted early this month. All fabrics in
the store are sorted for easy access and students also have access to books and examples of clothes for reference. It takes approximately 15 weeks for a final piece to be finished and during this time, students are researching fabrics, history and experimenting with designs. One student, Kitty Hawkins, has been

Lecturer Karen said, “The store has helped students meet deadlines as they can start making undergarments and build the structure for their costumes using the generic canvas in the store and then order the special top fabric independently, working within the design concept.” There are 26 third year students due to graduate in 2014 and NTU are adamant that the store has been and will be invaluable in their progress.

NTU Summer Recruitment Fair Wednesday 30 April 2014, 3 pm – 6 pm Newton Building, Level 0 Forum
With over 40 companies attending, don’t miss your chance to increase your employability prospects. Organised by Nottingham Trent University’s Employability Team, this is an unmissable opportunity for all NTU students and graduates to meet and network with recruiters and HR professionals. It’s your chance to find out more about potential job offers, placements, and graduate / internship schemes. Employers attending this year’s fair include:
planning for your future
Top tips to prepare for the NTU Recruitment Fair: We spoke with employers who shared some great ideas to help our students get the most out of recruitment fairs. Here’s what you can do to prepare: 1. Do your research This will enable you to have decent background knowledge and ask detailed questions – it’s not impressive when a student asks ‘what do you do?’. Employers do remember who they’ve spoken to and what they’ve said. 2. Target employers that could most benefit you It will be busy, crowded and noisy, highlight the key employers that you would most like to talk to. Go to them first. 3. Dress appropriately You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression. Look smart and present yourself in a professional manner. 4. Don’t turn up for the freebies... be prepared Employers can spot freebie thieves from a mile off. Establish communication, be open, if employers want to talk to you, they want to work with you. Take a pen and paper to note down any relevant information. Also bring a few copies of your CV and personalised cover letter – it may help employers remember you.

“Yeah, we had a Nandos!” The Vamps talk about their first city visit BEN JOLLEY
I’m a third year student and really worried about what I’m going to do after I graduate! I want to go travelling but worry I will never find a full time job. What shall I do? First of all if travelling is something you really want to do, I’d say go for it! You never know what adventures may happen and it might give you some clarity and open some doors on what you want to do next? You don’t want to look back and have regrets, so travelling while you are young is probably a good option. In regards to careers there is Student Services in the SU, who are great and might be able to advise you further.
All throughout school I knew I was gay, but I never acted on my emotions or told anyone. Since being at Trent I have found the confidence to come out to a few close friends but am yet to tell my parents. I’m in my first year and am scared how they will react. Coming out can be scary and is a huge milestone in your life. It’s different for everyone and can only be done when you feel 100% ready. Don’t tell your parents just because you think they should know, wait till you feel ready yourself and don’t let anyone pressure you! If you do feel it is time to come out to your parents I would firstly suggest doing it face to face (I came out to my Dad via email and it opens a whole lot of other questions!) You are their child and I’m sure they will support you, it may come as a shock so prepare yourself for their reaction but this is who you are and you should be proud of that! Good luck!
British pop-rock band, The Vamps, who are made up of - lead vocalist and guitarist, Brad Simpson, guitarist, James McVey, bass guitarist, Connor Ball and drummer, Tristan Evans, are on course for their first number one single this weekend with Last Night. Their debut single ‘Can We Dance’ reached the number two spot in the official charts. And they have recently won The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice award for the UK favourite breakthrough act. Ben Jolley spoke to the witty lads backstage at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham before opening for The Wanted. How have you spent your day in Nottingham? Brad: “We had Nandos!” Tristan: “Yeah, we went to Nando’s and then came here at around about 2pm. Nottingham seems like a great city, we feel at home here. Obviously we didn’t have the time to explore the city as much as we would have liked to but there’s always the future.” What can fans expect from the show tonight? B: “A lot of energy. Tristan’s got a kit that lights up and James does a speech similar to the I Have A Dream speech.” T: “Connor runs around a lot and Brad stage dives a couple of times.” Is there anything strange on your tour bus?
ON THEIR ALBUM: ‘IT’S A CULMINATION OF OUR SOUND.’
T: “Just these three people.” What’s it like touring with The Wanted and Elyar Fox? T: “Lovely, we kind of hung out with Elyar before we were all together.” C: “Yeah, we’ve known him for quite a while.” T: “We’ve known him for a couple of years now so it’s nice to be on the same tour with Elyar. The Wanted are cool guys, they’ve given us loads of words of wisdom.” C: “A lot of wisdom.” B: “They’ve been lovely to us.” How would you describe your sound? J: “Power-pop? Rock? A bit of everything really.” What can fans expect from the new album? B: “A lot of songs. It’s a 15 song album. or 18 if you get the deluxe which is available now on pre-order at all good stores.” T: “We’ve been working on it for about three years now. It’s a culmination of our sound, its guitar driven but there’s also ballads on there. It’s a rollercoaster.” What’s your new single about? J: “Last Night.” C: “Good night, last night.” T: “Last Night is about, just having fun, having a
Focused: Two members of the four-piece band that are ready to aim as high as possible blast, you know, living while we’re young. Honestly it’s about that. Being young and a teenager and having a carnival in a warehouse.” What are your plans for the rest of the year?
B: “We’re heading out on our own headline tour.” C: “We’ve got a show at Wembley Stadium.” The Vamps debut album Meet the Vamps is released this month so check out their
website for more details. Throughout the summer, they will be playing their fair share of festivals so if you have the time (and the money) go check out their schedule.
Russell Howard tickles Nottingham crowd DANIEL ROBBINS
The charismatic Russell Howard embraced the Capital FM Arena to provide a trademark set on his first tour for three years. Starting by declaring Nottingham ‘the manboob capital’ with some help from a Twitter follower, he continued on in his jovial way to
create an incredible atmosphere. Twitter hadn’t always been as nice to him though when he revealed he had been subject to a death threat, however, it wasn’t without its funny turn. “I’m gonna rape you, I’m gonna murder you, and I’m gonna berry you,” was the nature of a threat from
a member of the EDL, something the 32-yearold could make light of due to the unfortunate spelling error. He continued through his usual comedy subjects such as racism and threesomes giddily asking whether “If you sleep with a schizophrenic, does it count as a threesome?” , much to the crowds amusement.
Growing in confidence with each minute, the man behind the hit show ‘Russell Howard’s Good News’ was more than at home in front of the thousands of fans. A break in between the two halves didn’t dampen the atmosphere as he continued to fill the venue with laughter before being mobbed
by autograph hunters and ‘selfie’ lovers at the end. It was at the end though where he showed his serious side when talking about a little boy with cancer. The boy in question had planned his own funeral with all guests having to go in costume, including Howard in a giant pink dildo from one of his
early sketches. However, after beating the doctor’s predictions, the 14-year-old pulled through with Howard celebrating the moment in true style. Cue a picture to end the set with the boy in the costume and the comedian stood next to him. A truly heartwarming ending to a great show.

Comedian Jack Whitehall brings his Lion King obsession to the Capital FM Arena
Jack enters the arena on Segway NATALIE ROBINSON
Entering a packed arena on a Segway isn’t what you would normally expect from a comedian, but Jack Whitehall proved you don’t have to play it safe to make 10,000 people laugh when he entertained the Capital FM Arena. The laughs were soon coming thick and fast as the self-confessed posh boy used anecdotes from his past and present performances to entertain the audience. And as someone who has seen his past performances on TV, it’s safe to say his arena tour definitely doesn’t disappoint. From the stories of restaurant faux-pas to the hilarious details of his love life, it’s no wonder Whitehall kept the audience laughing across both halves of the show, all whilst throwing in a few Nottingham references that everyone could relate to. In and amongst the jokes came a more serious undertone about a recent doctors visit, but rest assured, Whitehall had the audience in stitches and you would be forgiven for being fooled by the serious introduction. But it was his long-running obsession with Mufasa and the Lion King which saw the performance at its funniest. Declaring to the audience

‘A FIVE STAR PERFORMANCE AND AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENING, A MUST SEE SHOW.’ that ‘Mufasa was a king’ and that he ‘shouldn’t have died’ Whitehall showed his true talent when an audience member openly stated her dislike for the film and it was clear that this was just the start of his audience interaction, as later on a front row audience member bore the brunt of Whitehall’s whit as he mocked everything from his jumper to his sexuality. Starting the second half with a t-shirt donning the phrase #prayfortheking, it’s clear that Whitehall knows how to make a joke last, and while his obsession with the Lion King proved a bit much at times, anyone who can prance around in a lion onesie while keeping their credibility deserves a warm response. But the real laughs came when the 25-year-old pushed the boundaries with his reference to the Oscar Pistorius trial. Whitehall makes it easy to laugh out loud in the way he so effortlessly lets you in to his inner-most thoughts. Flitting between stories of

Funny: Whitehall was at his best when performing and entering the scene on a Segway his past at a boarding school and his mother’s advice on how to beat the bullies with poetry, it’s clear Whitehall has always known his talent for comedy, though his refreshing attitude makes you believe this is not the case. A five star performance and an unforgettable evening, definitely a must see show!

Fear not, Nottingham, as usual, has lots going on over Easter. Whether you are after family fun, fine dining or an alternative way to spend Easter, you will find it somewhere in and around the city. McBusted come calling Need For filmREVIEW LUCY ACTON
Speed
Ever since ‘Fast and Furious’ hit our screens, car action films have been quite the rage. Not usually one for action thrillers, I went along to see this film with slumped shoulders, dragging my feet. I much prefer girly chick flicks or comedies but have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Breaking Bad’ star Aaron Paul impresses all in this backstreet race thriller. An underground street racer and car mechanic owns a garage filled with high end cars and when his best friend is killed in a race, he finds himself in a mucky situation with his arrogant business partner. The next step is revenge and we all know this isn’t going to go smoothly. A great film, although confusing at some points but nevertheless having you on the edge of your seat throughout. It was so tense I didn’t even eat the whole tub of popcorn. Shocking! The addition of a helicopter and the chance to watch it in 3D really impressed me, I have to say. Adapted from the hugely successful video game series, director Scott Waugh has done a relentlessly good job in this mayhem packed action movie. One criticism is that the racing scenes are the parts that grab your attention and there aren’t enough of them however it’s still a good piece of work. Praised as having roots of traditionally iconic American car culture movies, this is definitely a film to watch if you enjoy this genre. 3/5 stars for me.
EofE are heading on a big summer “THE FACT THAT THE GUYS FROM MCBUSTED LIKE OUR STUFF IS MIND BLOWING” DANIEL ROBBINS
Determined: The band are aiming to make the most of their amazing chance to support the Superband McBusted
For one tour only, pop rock bands Busted and McFly have combined to create the ‘Superband’ McBusted – making this the most highly anticipated tour of the year. With such high expectations for McBusted, support act EofE have a big set of shoes to fill and we caught up with lead guitarist Dan Bremner to see what the opportunity means for the band. 1. How big will this summer be for the band after the announcement? We are about to have to the best seven weeks of our life. What we have to do is make sure we have an impact, and use it to launch our career. 2. A year after forming how special is it to be trusted by McBusted to be the support band? We have all been working very hard so to have this
opportunity is immense. The fact that the guys from McBusted liked our stuff enough to give this chance is mind blowing! We won’t let them down. 3. What do you expect playing in front of thousands at these venues to be like? Awesome and scary: equal measure. We have always delivered a great show whatever venue we’ve played in, no matter how many people have been there. But the bigger the crowd, the bigger the atmosphere and well, we just get better and better so hopefully these shows will be off the chart. 4. How much do both McFly and Busted mean to the band? We’ve grown up with them and we all loved the pure energy of Busted! Those
guys killed it and looked like they were having so much fun in their videos. McFly are awesome, from the opening riff of ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’ we were hooked – incredible song writers. 5. Which venue are you looking forward to playing most? That’s a real tough one as we are psyched to be playing them all – but I guess if we had to pick three it would be Birmingham LG arena as it’s mine Luke and Tom’s hometown, Newcastle for Nicky’s hometown and then of course the O2 London. It’s THE venue! 6. How would you describe your music? Our music has been described as the perfect crossover rock – we try and attract a whole diverse audience. I think that
because we have various influences we bring a wide range of elements to each track. There’s a lot of rock, a bit of pop, a hint of blues and twist of RnB – so hopefully something for everyone. 7. Why did you decide to form the band a year ago and what would you be doing if you weren’t doing this? There had been many band line ups with me and Luke in school and outside that didn’t really go anywhere. Tom was in band with some friends from his school and I met Tom through our girlfriends. I ended up jamming with Toms band and even played bass when Toms band needed a bass player. After this, Tom and I started jamming and ‘Audio Disease’ was formed, and Luke joined after 5 months.
During mid-2013 me, Tom and Luke decided to go full time and formed EofE which led to us trialling a couple of drummers until we found Nicky and EofE were complete. 8. Are you looking to emulate McBusted in their success and what do you hope will come from this opportunity? Absolutely they are respected and very successful and we would be happy to follow in their footsteps. We want to utilise this tour to get our music out there and show the UK what we can do. It’s a massive opportunity to build our fan base and we’ll be giving it our all. McBusted and EofE will be playing at the Capital FM Arena on the April 29th and May 20th.
From the new kids on the block to the band on their last tour
Vamps demonstrated their pop with a rockier live edge prowess. Skinny jeans and floppy hair in check, Brad led ‘the next One Direction’ to steal the show with their catchy pop singles, Can We Dance, Wild Heart along and Last Night which is set to give them their first number one. While The Vamps announced a return to Nottingham on their headline tour, The Wanted bowed out as thousands of sobbing, heartbroken mum’s and young girls watched the end of an era, – similar to Take That’s ’96 split.
After ten, top-ten single’s and three albums, since forming in 2009, they performed the majority of their back catalog with everyone in the arena stood on their feet, singing along throughout Gold Forever and Show Me Love (America). Pyrotechnics and raised level platforms benefited the otherwise minimal dance routines and forgettable album ‘fillers’ although the hits, I Found You, Walks Like Rhianna and Chasing The Sun remained catchy pop tracks. Each band member, individually thanked the fans throughout the near two
hour show, ensuring their devotee’s that, “this is not the end.” Near the set’s close, a teary Max George, showed his softer side, struggling to sing chart smash, Glad You Came after the band told the crowd that, “no one is to blame, it’s not our choice and we will try to come back to Nottingham.” While their Wikipedia page states they are taking a ‘hiatus’, working on ‘solo endeavors’, the tabloid rumour mill implies that they have been dropped by their record label, after their final album, Word of Mouth flopped in the UK Album
Chart. Perhaps the nail in The Wanted’s coffin, was that their final single, Glow In The Dark, didn’t even scratch the surface of the Top 40, coming in at a devastating #177. Just a sign of the times? Quite possibly an indication of their apparent irrelevancy in 2014 to the new era of EDM and house tracks topping the chart and dominating Radio One playlists. Give it a few years and they will surely be preparing a comeback to storm the charts again and win the hearts of all their adoring fans once again.
REVIEW: The Wanted & The Vamps BEN JOLLEY
An emotional farewell of pop-sing-alongs sent The Wanted out on a high at the Capital FM Arena, during their ‘final ever UK performance’, passing their boy-band crown down to hotly-tipped, new kids on the block, The Vamps. Led by charismatic frontman, Brad Simpson, The

Statement necklaces: is it the next big trend? LAUREN LEE Every girl knows that the key to complete an outfit is to accessorise. - may it be a simple necklace or wearing a red belt to compliment that dress you’ve been dying to wear. Lucky for us, this year’s biggest accessories trend is most definitely the statement necklace - the chunkier and bolder the better. The statement necklace was a very popular trend during London and Paris fashion week with big designers such as Fendi (who incorpotated feathers into their necklaces), Balenciaga and Lanvin. Many people struggle to use accessories and try to keep their outfit clean and simple - but this is a trend that is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe; instantly change a plain, everyday outfit into something a bit more on trend. For example, think of an outfit made up of a plain white shirt with your favourite jeans - without a

Okay, so getting ready to go out is already a major issue for every woman, in every country, in every universe. Except for maybe Beyonce. It’s a difficult process already. What, with having to choose an outfit both suitable for the prospective location and company plus the never ending heels or flats debate. Throw in unpredictable English weather and it feels like you might as well cancel all social engagements for the foreseeable future. So, with this factor thrown into the mix, we need to be strong and emotionally prepared for the task ahead. The task to avoid hypothermia whilst remaining elegant and gorgeous. Let’s go! A fitted dress, in my eyes, is the best option for a night out. It’s elegant, sexy and sophisticated all in one. Check trusty Zara out for some gorgeous midi dresses that cover you up but show off that bod in a ladylike fashion. Jumpsuits will be your life savers in this weather and there is no better place to find one than Missguided. They will keep you cosy and comfy but if you select one with a cheeky deep V-neck, it will keep it looking less daytime/inmate uniform material and more clubbing chic. Lastly, a blazer will do wonders. Lightweight and stylish, they make an outfit, especially when you need a bit of weather protection. The staples are white and black, head to H&M - cheap and cheerful, my friends. My last nugget of advice would be to join the big clutch brigade, not only because they’re trendy but because they will fit a little £1 umbrella for those horrible taxi waits. Finally, I’m sorry boys, but there isn’t any advice in here for you because, let’s be honest, even if you were deep in the Antarctic, you’d still wear a t-shirt and jeans.

hocolate nests are a quick, simple and cheap option as a tasty Easter treat. An absolute must for Easter these cakes can be shared with family and friends, or if you’re a little more selfish, save them all for yourself… we won’t judge! Ingredient’s (makes 12 nests): • 300g Milk Chocolate • 1 pack of Mini Eggs • Around 300g Cornflakes Method: • Break up the chocolate into pieces and place in a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water, ensuring that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. • Slowly melt the chocolate until smooth and glossy and transfer to a larger bowl. • Add the cornflakes a little at a time and mix until incorporated. Carry on adding the cornflakes until they are fully incorporated into the mixture. • Line a cake tin with paper cases. Then, using a spoon, take a little of the chocolate and cornflake mixture and transfer into paper cases. • Use the Mini Eggs to decorate the top creating the impression of a nest and then place in the fridge to firm up. The perfect barbeque MATT LONG After a seemingly neverending winter, it’s been a long overdue wait for some cheerier weather and a reason to replace jeans and a jumper for shorts and a t-shirt. In typical British fashion, the appearance of a mild spring has prompted many premature barbeques and an effortless transition from cups of tea to an alcoholic beverage. Barbeques can be as last minute as you want, and retail stores nationwide accommodate for this. Perhaps you’re with your mates and after several ice cold alcoholic beverages fancy a quick slap up barbeque lunch. No problem – any local supermarket or convenience store will have stocked up on disposable barbeques which cost no more than a fiver. Pretty ideal if your student loan is beginning to dry up. Restaurant of the month ABBY MCHALE
After living in Nottingham for just over 18 months now, it’s not often that I find myself walking around the city centre and stumbling across an independent restaurant. However, Marrakesh is one of the exceptions. This Moroccan/ Lebanese restaurant situated on chapel bar is one of the few independently run places to eat in the city. Walking into
the restaurant is like stepping into Morocco – you are met by a deep rich orange and purple colour scheme, incense is burning and some tables have fabric above them to create a sultry atmosphere. Looking through the menu you will see lots of Moroccan and Lebanese flavours plus traditional dishes such as Moroccan lamb, couscous and tagines. Vegetarian dishes are
also available and the menu is one of the biggest I have ever come across. If you’re spoilt for choice, the restaurant offers a range of set menus to choose from with prices starting from around £15 per person. The dishes are full of flavour and you will certainly taste the flavours of Morocco and are even given a complimentary traditional tea to finish off your meal.
Living away from home has loads of benefits. There’s nobody telling you what to do combined with that great sense of independence as you make your own way in the world. However, in next to no time the sobering reality of having to cook for yourself sets in. If like me, you have zero culinary skills or just can’t be bothered, here are a few ways to wriggle out of cooking. Group Meals: One way to get around having to cook for yourself is to suggest having big meals cooked collectively with your housemates. This is a nice idea as who doesn’t like sitting down together to share a dish? Cue clever strategy because as soon as your friends realise how useless you are in the kitchen, they’ll step in. Sneaky! Haggling: This is my personal method of avoiding having to faff around with pots and pans. If you’re a dab-hand at ironing or cleaning or just have something to bring to the table then you can exchange this skill for meals. “If you make me dinner tonight I’ll tidy up the living room” is a classic one liner which will have you tucking into something edible in no time. Takeaways: If you can spare a few quid to feed yourself, a takeway is a perfect option for lazy cooks. Luckily, Nottingham is not short of a few takeaways and if you are feeling extremely lazy, you can order online from JustEat. co.uk. Quality food delivered straight to your door? Sold. If all else fails and you need a back-up, you can opt for the dreaded microwavable readymeal, but this should be avoided at all costs unless you have a particular hankering for meat that tastes like plastic.

A quality Indian restaurant DANIEL ROBBINS Ever fancied using your hour breaks at University to visit a quality Indian restaurant just on the doorstep? If not then why not start this month. Mogal-E-Azam is situated just seconds away from the city campus and provides you with food to cater for every taste pallet. Founded in 1974, the family-run restaurant was one of the first authentic Indian restaurants to make Nottingham their home. They still remain that same authentic place compared to the other Indian restaurants in and around the city giving you the true dining experience. Owner Asab Sheikh of Bangladeshi heritage, revealed that their long history in Nottingham is
something that makes him and his family proud. “Our family moved over here in the 70’s and my brother saw this spot and purchased the space and made our restaurant,” Asab said. “We were here before the Theatre Royal and the hotel round the corner so we are well established in the city.” The restaurant has seen some prestigious guests eat their food over the years as performers from the Theatre Royal flocked to the prestigious venue. Asab also revealed that his family are in the best position to provide the food that they know their customers love. “Most people don’t know this but 90% of Indian
restaurants are owned by Bangladeshi natives,” Asab said. “We feel like the people who came over first and helped popularise curry in Britain and having done it for nearly 40 years we know what it takes to keep the customer happy.” With the ability to have a private banqueting room for up to 150 people at your service, why not go there for a birthday meal and take along your friends? It gets even better for students too as there is a 10% discount for students with a valid N.U.S card. Go on, give it a try you won’t be disappointed as you are treated to traditional Indian food in a brilliant setting.

Crab, a fantastic clean and rich flavour. Crabs are absolutely fantastic creatures, they are crustaceans that live in the thousands within our seas, we would be doing ourselves a favour if we started eating more crab. This fantastically easy recipe will show you how to make a simple dish without damaging the fragile flavour of the crab meat, there is endless possibilities with crab it can be used in a delicious ‘risotto’ it can be used to make a ‘terrine’ it can be devised to go into a light summer salad, literally the possibilities are endless with the incredible delicate meat. But it’s not all about the room – Paris is about culture, and it’s packed full of sights to see, galleries to explore and hidden gems that cost next to nothing to do. If you like art, then you should head to the Louvre, it’s home to some of the greatest paintings in the world, including the famous Mona Lisa, and it’s free to get in for EU citizens. Or if art isn’t your style, and you prefer things a little more gothic, then hidden underneath the streets is the catacombs – where the skulls of more than six

For many, summer means only one thing: an alcohol fuelled holiday. As students, we love nothing more than the thought of going abroad, sunbathing and partying until the sun comes up. However, going abroad is not always cheap and problems can arise. Once abroad, students may face the difficult decision of choosing food over alcohol, which can lead to a very unhappy student. This however, can be prevented by choosing an all-inclusive holiday - which includes all meals and drinks are included when you pay for the hotel. Many people can be put off of the idea because it can mean spending an extra fifty pounds or so on a holiday – but it really is the wiser option. So what would you prefer: limitless drinks or a budgeted holiday?

Ocean: dressing up on a tight budget GEORGIA FARQUHARSON
One thing that you will find at university is that you will go out in fancy dress more often than you do normal clothes. The weekly tradition of ‘Ocean Devotion’ will capture the students of Nottingham at some point over their three years here and with a new theme each week, it can become quite an expensive habit. However, don’t let cost put you off; a tight budget is not worth missing Ocean for! Here are some top tips on how to create fancy dress on a budget; including recycling, getting creative and making do. With over 50,000 students at Trent and Nottingham combined, one of your friends is bound to have what you need for just about every possible theme – so don’t be afraid to put out a Facebook plea. If you have previously done a similar theme, get creative and adapt. As they did in the war, it’s time to ‘make do and mend.’ A banana/bumble bee and Minnie Mouse/ladybird are just a few examples of transferable fancy dress outfits. In keeping with the ‘make do and mend’ theme, why not make fancy dress out of

Everyone understands the frustration of seeing someone pass you by wearing an amazing outfit – but being too embarrassed to stop and ask where they bought it, just in case you look like a crazy stalker. Well fear no more, the latest fashion app ‘ASAP54’ works as a combined social media site allowing you to search for a desired item by uploading a photo of it. So remember that girl with the fabulous pair of shoes that
you know would look amazing with that dress or amongst your other pairs? Well it’s just become a whole lot simpler to find them. Just quickly sneak a photo of them and upload it. Within seconds, it scans the web and identifies where you can buy it! Now isn’t that the answer to all your prayers? The app – which is available for download from the apple store – even suggests alternative or similar clothes to the ones you are searching for if they can’t find an exact match.
So there is no need for bracing the cold English outdoors when you’re searching for the perfect outfit, simply log on and let ‘ASAP54’ use its digital recognition technology to find an outfit for you. To top this app off, it is entirely free and rumour has it that high-flying fashion model Cara Delevigne is already swearing by it. The app has been described by many as the, ‘Shazam of fashion’ and we all know how fantastic Shazam is, so why not give it a try!
topBOOK “The Virgin University Survival Guide” CASSANDRA SHIPLEY
A humorous read with several home truths and useful tips, this book would make an ideal gift for someone about to leave for university or someone who has got there and has no idea what they’re doing! You could even buy it for yourself if you feel nervous or are not sure about certain things. People have rated this book well on Amazon and found it to be invaluable when leaving home for the first time. There are sections on housing, ‘hedonism’ and even those horrible things we all hate – student loans. Although there is clearly a comical aspect to this book, it is completely full of very useful tips to make the most out of university life, whatever you like to do in you spare time are how you like to get your work done. It successfully takes a no-nonsense approach to serious issues but adds lighter comments to remind students that although university is important to get you a degree, you should also enjoy yourself along the way. It will likely help with the organisation of moving to university and how to keep yourself organised once you get here, some students have even said it should be given out at Fresher’s Fairs! Despite some of the information being out of date – such as university fees and how they get paid now – overall it seems like this book is a bible for students and should be purchased and read if you feel a little uneasy about anything at university.

The Entrepreneur: the man behind flappy bird DARCIE CHAMBERS Dong Nguyen was a quiet 28-year-old who lived with his parents in Hanoi, Vietnam, and had a day job programming location devices for taxis. One weekend he decided to make a mobile game; simple but challenging, in the spirit of the Nintendo games he grew up playing.
The object was to fly a bug-eyed, biglipped, bloated bird between a series of green vertical pipes. The quicker a player tapped the screen, the higher the bird would flap. He called it Flappy Bird. Flappy Bird went live on the iOS App Store back in May last year, but with around 5,000 new apps
going online every month, the game was lost in the mix and seemed like a bust – until, eight months later, when it turned into an overnight sensation. When the game went viral download figures topped a staggering 50 million, and at its height of popularity, Nguyen was reportedly earning over £30,000 a day from advertising – even
Mark Zuckerberg didn’t become so rich so fast. Nguyen shocked everyone in February when he announced that he would be removing the game from app stores. Overcome with guilt over what he considered to be its addictive nature he claimed that its popularity was ruining his ‘simple life’. However, is the original
Flappy bird destined to flap and die another day? Nyugen had all but disappeared since the game’s demise, until earlier this month when his announcement, over Twitter, that the game will be downloadable again soon and came pretty much out of the blue – although he won’t say when.

How to make your money last through the final term
DARCIE CHAMBERS Although receiving your student loan may seem all well and good, the most difficult challenge student’s face is making sure that money doesn’t run dry by the end of the term. Putting pen to paper and writing down every expense across the course of a week can prove more helpful than you initially think when it comes to saving a few extra pennies. Not only will it help identify where exactly your money is going, it will more likely than not, leave alarm bells ringing on those problem areas that are eating away at your budget too. Planning meals in advance and preparing food at home is one of the simplest ways to cut down expenditures. Make your own sandwiches, refill your water bottle, or even nick your granny’s flask and make your own coffee for lectures. By now, we all know that beans sadly don’t always means Heinz, but there’s more to savvy supermarket shopping than just living off Tesco value products. Freezer food is nearly always cheaper than their refrigerated equivalents, so if you can get from the supermarket to your front door without it defrosting, it’s definitely worth heading up the frozen aisle.

uilding some real muscle seems to be illusive for most. After many hours of pouring over indepth research, scientific papers and my own experience here is what I have found to be the key scientific points with regards to building muscle. Gym trained individuals may allow rest periods of up to three weeks between training bouts without fear of losing muscle. These rest periods have been shown to contribute more to muscle growth than training continuously without rest does; remember that muscle is built when the body rests and recovers. Research suggests that exercises performed without a full range of motion (ROM) may be just as effective as
exercises performed with a full ROM (providing that exercises are performed correctly with appropriate contractions and time under tension). No specific type of muscle contraction appears to directly influence growth although a combination of all is recommended for best results. Buy a Hula Hoop If you haven’t picked up a hula hoop since your playground days, now is the time to add it into your fitness routine. A hula hoop will tone your thighs, abs, bum and arms and can burn up to 200 calories in half an hour. Crank up your favourite music and get your hips moving. 9. Go for a swim Swimming can be both a rigorous and effective fitness workout. It is also a gentler sport, so your muscles will be conditioned whilst you work out. If you want to get fit, heading to the nearest gym is the obvious answer. But if running on treadmills, pumping iron and admiring your chiselled abs in front of a mirror isn’t your thing, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of other options. Here are some useful tips to help you get fit - whilst you avoid the oggling from fellow ‘get-fitters’ at your local gym: 1. Go for a run It may seem a bit boring, but get a group together and make it into a social activity and it will seem more like a treat than a chore. Arrange to go once a week and push yourself to go a bit further each time to increase your stamina. 2. Go to a gym class It’s still in the gym, but can be a lot more enjoyable and beneficial than 45 minutes on the cross trainer. You’ll learn new techniques in a class and be motivated to work by the people around you. The gym at NTU offers a range of classes - from legs, bum and tums to zumba to
pilates. 3. Start going to a club Why not join a sporting club. Even if you’ve never played a sport before most societies have beginner sections and you’ll meet plenty of likeminded people. 4. Do a fitness DVD If you want to exercise from home using a fitness DVD is a handy alternative to a gym class. You can even do it without leaving your bedroom. 5. Get an app There are plenty of fitness apps on the market which are tailored to whatever type of fitness you’re after. Just search fitness on the app store and see what new exercises you’ll be inspired to try. 6. Invest in a bike Swapping the bus or your car for bike is beneficial for your health, and the environment. Riding a bike is a great form of cardiovascular exercise and it doesn’t have to be expensive either. Look out for the best deals at cycling shops or head to eBay. 7. Approaching a noisy neighbour: a how to guide OLIVER STAINFORTH You meet all sorts of people at university – the nocturnal party animal who only emerges at the smell of alcohol, the bookworm who achieves firsts for every piece of work submitted, the partner in crime who becomes a best friend for life. You will also generally meet the one person who doesn’t understand the concept of volume. They tend to have music blaring at all hours of the night with little consideration for anyone’s early starts in the morning. If you do encounter a person like this, here are a few tips on how to manage the noise. • Ask them nicely to be quieter. It doesn’t always work, but killing them with kindness might just do the trick. • Try getting through to them with a passive aggressive note. You can have a bit
of a joke with them to ease the tension – it might not be a laughing matter to you but it may help them to understand better. • Get your own back – if they keep you up at night, be really noisy and wake them up the next morning or vice versa. Mean, maybe, but they would think twice about keeping you up at night again! • It shouldn’t have to come to it but buy some earplugs and they will become your best friends. • As a last resort, if you live in student accommodation that has hall managers - talking to them about the noisy housemate could help. • Also ask your housemates if they feel the same way as it would be easier to approach the culprit as a whole rather than on your own. Follow these steps and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Next year’s top house essentials KELLY TAYLOR
The end of the academic year is nearly upon us and more nights are being spent in the library rather than the night clubs. Soon we will all be packing up to head home and not long after, back to university again. Here are a few reminders of what you mustn’t forget to bring next year in case you missed them this year. A printer – No more
searches in the library for a computer, queuing for the printer and topping up your student card to pay the fees. A printer and its ink may cost more than the pennies per page you pay in the library but it is in an investment to save you the hassle and instead print from your own bed. Full length mirror – More a ladies essential but just as useful for guys – sick of
crouching down to see if your outfit is okay through a tiny 50cm long mirror? Be sure to squeeze that full length mirror into your car on the way up to get a good view of just how silly your fancy dress is on a Wednesday night. Herbs – to fulfil your culinary needs, why not ask your parents for any spare herbs and salt and pepper shakers they might have stuffed in the
back of a cupboard to take with you, so your Bolognese provides you some home comfort away from home. Extra Large Mugs - With many students heading into their last year of studying, big cups will become an essential for holding a nights worth of your favourite tea or coffee. And if that isn’t enough they can also double up as great beer mug when needed.
One of the biggest annoyances at the end of the year is having to leave your beloved bedroom behind. To make things easier it is often best to take belongings home in staggered journeys. If you’re going home anytime soon but plan to return to Nottingham afterwards, take home the clothes you won’t need to bring back – it saves you taking it all home in bulk at a later date.
Having lived independently for the last year, it can be irritating to discover that living under your parents’ roof means living under their rules. While this might grate on you throughout summer, if pull your weight around the house you’ll slip right back in at home in no time. If the thought of this is simply unbearable to you, why not have a summer on work placement. It could give you
the chance to spend your summer somewhere exciting abroad or somewhere new and it will make your CV look great. Don’t panic too much, you’ll get the chance to catch up with all those friends you’ve missed through the year and before you know it (unless you’re a third year of course), it will be time to return to Nottingham for another funfilled year at university.
Moving back home this summer OLIVER STAINFORTH After almost eight months of balancing essay deadlines and bank balances with endless socialising and partying, the end of the university year is in sight. First years, congratulations on surviving the drunkest year of your life! Second years, make the most of your summer it will be the last big one you get. And third years, it’s time to sob – the real world beckons!
