A University of Nottingham English lecturer has had to apologise after he branded one of his students an ‘idiot’ over Facebook. Anthony Fisher, 40, was a popular lecturer but his outburst meant the university ordered a remark of all essays in that module. The comments came over the Christmas break and the beginning of January, where he also made jokes about panic attacks by students. A spokesman for the University said, “We view the behaviour of Tony Fisher as completely unacceptable and wholly out of character with the teaching ethos of the school. The quality of student experience is our first priority. All student complaints are taken very seriously, and this complaint is currently being addressed.” During the six week Christmas holiday, Fisher took to Facebook to brag about using marking days for other household tasks such baking and cleaning his bike. At the start of January he wrote, “Damn it, the 50 odd sociolinguistics essays that I have been ignoring all through the holidays appear not to have marked themselves in my absence. And I was so sure that they would.”

Fisher blasts HR as ‘unreasonable’ DANIEL ROBBINS Front page continued His tirade didn’t stop there either as on January 13, Fisher took to Facebook to brand a student an ‘idiot’ before making fun of a student’s panic attacks the following day. He posted, “Does anyone know the name of over the counter herbal sweets that have a mild sedative effect? It’s not for me but for a student having panic attacks!” In a statement issued by Fisher he revealed he thought the postings were private and it wasn’t his intention for the comments to be seen by anyone other than personal friends. He added, “I fully accept that even in a private context, these comments are wholly inappropriate and, with the benefit of hindsight, I deeply regret posting them.” Fisher, who is taking up a teaching post at University of York St John, also attacked the Human Resources department claiming they refused to let him out of his contract early. He is quoted as saying the HR team were ‘unreasonable and absolute a*******s’.

What a pity you don’t have a LARGE ARTICLE in your newspaper asking students to RESPECT the area they are living in. As a long term home owner of Portland Road we have seen most of the home owners move away from the area because of the disrespectful behaviour of students living in multiple residences. At least 3 of these homeowners have had nervous breakdowns because they have been unable to deal with the problems caused by multiple student occupancies. During the last 4 months I have had to call out police on 2 occasions to 2 different premises because of loud parties (including foul language, shouting , screaming, vomiting & urinating in the street) going on until the early hours of the morning. One at the weekend went on until 3.30am and one before Christmas was still going on until 4.30am until police arrived. They kept their windows fully open to maximise the noise. Screaming/ shouting/swearing down the length of the street on Wednesday(!), Friday & Saturday nights around 10.30-11pm is a regular occurrences as they get tanked up at home on cheap booze then go out clubbing. So please support the permanent residents who are living in an area which now has over 90% multiple student occupancies!

First place for UoN in green rankings

February 2014

NATALIE ROBINSON University of Nottingham has been internationally recognised after being named the greenest university in the world. The university was ranked in first place out of 301 universities across 61 counties in the Green metric Ranking of World Universities run by the University of Indonesia. The award comes after university officials launched an environmental strategy in 2010 to increase sustainability across all campuses. The University of Nottingham, who won the award back in 2011 and came second in 2010 and 2013, was judged on criteria such as energy and carbon management, sustainable transportation, and quality green space on campus. Stand out points for the university were said to be its recycling rates and the success of the campus Hopper bus, as well as its progress on waste and energy management. Director of Sustainability at the University of Nottingham, Andy Nolan, said, “Sustainability is high on the agenda at Nottingham and we are continuously looking at ways of reducing our carbon footprints and being as ‘green’ as possible. To be recognised in an international poll such as this is a tremendous achievement and is a reflection of the hard work that is being done here by staff and students alike.” Students were also proud of the accolade, saying they could see why their university had been so highly recognised. Catherine Folwell, studying at the University of Nottingham said, “For such a large campus it’s really good that the university makes so much effort to look after the environment. There are lots of good things about the university, particularly the Hopper Bus, so it’s really good they’ve made it sustainable.”

Celebrations: Graduates have every right to smile as figures reveal they have their best years ahead of them

UoN get thumbs up from top employers ALEX BLAKEMORE

The country’s top employers have voted the best graduates in the country to be students from the University of Nottingham. Figures attained by High Fliers research, which monitors graduate recruitment, shows graduates from the University of Nottingham perform

best in their new job roles compared to other university graduates. Students from 150 different countries go to the university and it also has campuses in Malaysia and China. Callum Bolland, a first year Sociology student at the University of Nottingham, is not surprised by this news.

He said, “Graduates are such a high quality as they excel off the top class teaching opportunities provided to them by the teachers no matter what course they are on. I have been a student for just three months now, and have been taught by various methods such as writing powerful books, and taking up overseas

Taste of Waverley OLIVIA PORTER Great British Bake Off Winner and Nottingham Trent University alumnus Frances Quinn created a show stopping cake to help celebrate 170 years of the Universities School of Art and Design. Frances Quinn was there as a celebrity guest for the opening of the Since 1843: In The Making exhibition. She brought a stunning cake along with her as representation of the Waverley building. She said her studies at the university are what helped her towards becoming the star baker with creative flair. Her cake at the event really showed how she used her creativeness mixed with her culinary skills to create her

masterpiece. She said, “When people ask me what I prefer, design or baking, I can’t separate them. For me they are interlinked. When I’m doing pieces like this, design and baking flow together.” The cake was made by layers of different coloured chocolate buttons for the tiles of the roof, with biscuits used for the brickwork. Frances also worked hard to place chocolate shards to create the roman numerals on the clock face. Amanda Briggs-Goode, who was Frances’s lecturer in printed textile design at the university, said, “To have it made by one of our graduates was wonderful. It was the icing on the cake for the exhibition. It was delicious.”

Staff strikes draw mixed reactions NATALIE ROBINSON

Thousands of students have been left disappointed after another staff strike left them with blank timetables and cancelled lectures. Staff at both Nottingham Universities went on strike on January 28 to further protest a proposed 1% increase in their pay, arguing their pay has not increased despite tuition fees almost tripling in the last few years. The latest strike came as the second of three planned protests despite NTU officials making it clear that staff would have their pay cut for the time they took out of work to protest. The strike action, which is organised by the university and College Union, says they have not yet ruled plans to

make the third on February 10 a full-day protest. A 21-year-old student said, “I can understand that teachers want to be paid more, because they deserve it, but we pay thousands of pounds a year to learn and having lectures cancelled at the last minute despite that isn’t really fair.” Another student said, “I definitely think that lecturers should be paid more because of everything they do for students but striking isn’t achieving anything, it’s just making everyone suffer.” However not everyone was in disagreement with the strikes. A 19-year-old Arts student said, “Although it’s been a bit disruptive, why shouldn’t they strike? If they don’t strike they won’t get more money which I person-

ally think they deserve.” Union branch secretary Patrick Connellan added, “We feel our members are being treated unfairly. We believe this action is necessary and have received support from students.”

Gamers at risk in the real world EMMA PAGE Recent studies have shown that gamers are more prone to experience altered visual perceptions after playing video games for too long. Experts from Nottingham Trent University’s International Gaming Research Unit have claimed that some players may experience short lived but recurring illusions, caused by spending hours playing video games. Psychologists responsible for the study, Angelica Ortiz de Gortari and Professor Mark Griffiths, said their research found that some gamers had claimed they suffered distorted visions. Their research is the latest to contribute to studies into ‘Game Transfer Phenomena,’ where senses may be affected as a result of spending too much time concentrating on a single screen or game. According to the Telegraph,

teenagers and students spend on average more than 12 and a half hours per week playing video games. Discussions that too much time spent on video games from a young age is unhealthy has been an important issue throughout the study, as a number of people involved found it difficult to sleep or concentrate on something else. Tested on 483 gamers, the experiment found that visual illusions cause the brain to see ‘fake images’ once the player looks away from a screen. However, individual habits proved to have an effect on gamers throughout the study, as some participants found these experiences to be fun, and tried to induce them intentionally. The study highlights that there is a need to investigate claims of after effects further, to ensure that people are aware of any risks that may be linked to playing video games. Worried: Scientists have claimed that video games can be bad for the health of some people

Rally to improve safety awareness for students NATALIE ROBINSON

A group of third-year students have decided to take their battle for student safety across the whole of NTU with a scheme to help educate students on safety after nights out. The two-day scheme called Safety on Streets came after students studying Health and Social Care at Nottingham Trent University were tasked with creating a campaign aimed at an area of interest to students. The focus on safety comes in a bid to get more students attention about taking responsibility for themselves when returning from a night out. Lottie Cuccurullo, who is part of the Safety on Streets team, said, “We did

some research and found that Nottingham has a high student population, and because of this they are often the victims of crime. We felt it was a good idea to aim our campaign at keeping students safe because it is something that the majority of us experience regularly and because of this it is important to raise awareness of what to do and what not to do.” Along with free goody bags containing pens, condoms, and leaflets on safety, the week of action will see a Police representative talking to students. A twitter page has also been designed to give students even more tips on how to stay safe. Lottie said, “We thought it was a really good idea to get someone from

Nottinghamshire Police involved to reinforce our message. They will be taking questions and talking to students about ways they can protect themselves from crime We will also be running a number of competitions with prizes to get even more people involved. On our twitter page students can find even more safety advice as well as entering our competitions. We really hope this will raise awareness of our cause and encourage students to be more responsible for their own safety.” Safety on the Streets will be taking place from 10th-17th March 2014. what’sON THE NIGHTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS MONTH As students, we’re always looking for something new to do which can distract us from doing our work. Fear not, February looks to be filled with events that will keep us away from our desks as well as the library. Every Thursday, the Canal House is having an acoustic night so grab some friends, have some drinks and watch as musicians show off their talent. They are also holding Nottingham’s annual competition of Beer Champion. Go on, you know you want to. Throughout February, Nottingham is also hosting ghost walks around the city. Nights out don’t have to start with the cheapest bottle of vodka and end with you lying on the road covered in cheesy chips. No, do something different. (But you may have to sleep with the light on). For the whole month, Gatecrasher are holding a Winter sale which basically means they are selling 2-4-1 drinks. Where there is a drinks sale, I am there. On Saturday 15th February Nottingham’s playhouse will hold a vintage event with tea rooms, beauty parlours, stalls and fashion rooms, on. Let your in 50’s child out and take a few friends down there. And if that isn’t enough you also have one of the best gig venues right on your doorstep, Rock City. They will entertain you this month with the likes of John Newman and Jake Bugg. Start booking tickets for March too and see Ellie Goulding, Haim and The Bombay bicycle club.

People: Frank Turner Back in the UK, Turner reveals all to the UP “HOME COUNTRY SHOWS ALWAYS HAVE A SPECIAL VIBE TO THEM”, FRANK TURNER DANIEL ROBBINS 1. Have you and the band been to Nottingham before and if so what do you think to the city, do you have any special memories? Yeah we’ve been through many times, played most venues in the city, some that are now gone! I also came through with Million Dead quite a bit, my old band. I love Rock City; it’s one of the best venues in the country for sure. I do remember having to run off stage in the Rescue Rooms due to food poisoning, that wasn’t much fun. But yeah, lots of good memories. 2. How has the ‘FTHCFLAG’ been supported on tour so far? I’m not sure if anyone is doing one for this UK run, we had one here last year, and some people made their own one in the USA, which was amazing. It’s a cool little idea. 3. Which of the many

Source: Ben Morse Friendship: Turner said that making friends was one of the best parts of being an artist. Here he is with the Sleeping Souls. places you have performed across the world has been your favourite and why? I love playing in America, Texas in particular is a great place for music, food and drink. Germany is also awesome. We (me and the Sleeping Souls) have been fortunate enough to visit a lot of different parts of the world. 4. What are the best and worst parts of being on the road for so long? The best part is that you

travel and play music for a living. You get to make friends all over the world. On the other hand, those friendships are, by necessity, long distance and strained. You miss weddings, birthdays, christenings and funerals. It’s pretty disjointed. But it’s also something I choose to do, so it’s not like I can complain about it. 5. Do you enjoy being back in England after going on tours across the world? Yes, very much so, it’s

nice to be home, and home country shows always have a special vibe to them. 6. If you weren’t an artist what would you be and why? Trying to be an artist? Haha. Maybe a teacher. 7. What are your aims for 2014 and beyond? I’m working on some side projects, a book and a new record. My aim is to keep moving, keep creating, and hopefully stay interesting. 8. Going back, how special

was it to be open the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games? Would this rank as your biggest music achievement? I wouldn’t rank it as that, no. I was asked to do the show by Danny Boyle, which was nice, but I’m not sure how much of an achievement that is. It was fun, weird, unique, but not something I dwell on that much.

Ex students return to Rock City

L

ondon Grammar returned to where it all started to perform in their first ever sold out UK gig when they took to Rock City in January. The three-person band wowed a sold out Nottingham venue performing a number of hits from their debut album, ‘If You Wait’. With all three band mates meeting and forming in Nottingham it was a familiar haunt for the trio.

Starting with their first single of 2014, ‘Hey Now’ the general chatter at the “THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT, IT’S TRULY AMAZING”

venue before the band came on stage was quickly silenced. Nominated for the British Breakthrough Act, the band showed they are more than worthy of the recognition. It was a touching

performance after the trio all met in the city when studying at university. Hannah Reid and Dan Rothman met in their first year of their respective courses at University of Nottingham. A year later they were joined by Dominic Major after he began playing music with Rothman and the band haven’t stopped growing since then, with their gig at Rock City the first of many on their hit UK tour.

Fashion week debut sees student become the perfect fit for Milan

Italy trip puts Nottingham on the fashion talent map for years to come NATALIE ROBINSON

A

‘model student’ has described his debut into the fashion world as ‘unbelievable’ after a last minute email left him storming the catwalk at Milan Fashion week. Rob Turton, a second year Furniture and Product Design student at Nottingham Trent University was only given half an hour’s notice to appear at the Tom Rebl show at the world famous event, after losing his phone on arriving in the city. The opportunity came after Rob was spotted by Milan based talent scout Giorgio Barbieri who asked to see more head and body shots of the young model, as well as a video of his walk. The 20-year-old student, originally from Bedfordshire, flew out to Milan in January to take part in the show after his new Milan agency told him he had been put on option to model for Calvin Klein and Fendi. Rob said, “I never expected

Sporty style MEGAN FELSING It’s hard for us ladies to be encouraged to ‘gym it’ nowadays. Constantly bombarded with the likes of Miranda Kerr and Kim K looking like glowing Grecian goddesses doing oh-so flattering squats covered in glittering sweat, it is understandably difficult. On the one hand you don’t want to be ‘that’ girl who wears a full face of make up to work out, but you also don’t want to be a blotchy hot mess with ill-fitting leggings. Because, let me tell you, that will be the day you get onto the treadmill next to the hunk with a chiseled jaw and muscles carved by angels. My pre-gym routine consists of concealer, waterproof mascara and some trusty Lycra. The concealer will cover the blemishes and under eye circles from the night before. The mascara will give your face some life. And the Lycra…well, the Lycra will just make your bum look really, really good.

“EVERYONE IN OUR FAMILY WAS EXCITED ABOUT IT” to even be noticed by names like that, let alone be put on a shortlist to model for them; it was such a surprise to get the call and really was an early Christmas present. The whole experience has been amazing, getting to go to Milan has been unexpected but I will never forget it.” But the real shock came moments after arriving in the Italian city when the aspiring model realised his phone had been stolen. He said, “Luckily I could remember the directions to the modelling agency but it was a real worry because the agency had no way of contacting me for the rest of the week. But the theft didn’t spell the end for Rob’s debut into the fashion world as he recalls the moment he got the shock of his life.

Competition Serious: Rob Turton before his Milan trip MELANIE SIDDALL PHOTOGRAPHY He said, “I checked my emails before I left to watch the show with a friend, but to my surprise I’d had an email saying I was going to be in the show and had to get down there as soon as I could. I got there with 10 minutes

proud of his work. Rob said, “It’s been quite a talking point in our family for a while now, and everyone was really excited about it, I can’t imagine what it will be like when I return to do the Summer shows.“

as Sports Direct make the parting a little easier. For example, a pair of Lonsdale jogging bottoms that retailed at £19.99 have been knocked down to an incredible £3.99 (which is a lot easier on the pocket and perfect for a work out at the gym). Also a matching sports bra from Lonsdale, which retailed at £22.99, has been reduced to £4.59 - an essential for anyone who takes their exercise seriously. However, for those fashion

lovers who love to splash the cash, JD offers some of the best quality sports equipment on the high street. Nike are always a favoured brand by sporting legends such as David Beckham, so why not unleash your inner sportswoman with a sports kit full of Nike? The Nike vest is absolutely adorable - and with the wellknown, ‘Just Do It’ phrase giving you inspiration, it is well worth the £17 spend! Tweet us your thoughts @TheUniPaper

Perfect way to win a heart Romantic dessert made easy with this step-by-step guide EMILY OAKDEN These biscuits can serve as a great alternative to a thoughtful gift, or served as a romantic dessert with cream or ice cream. Ingredients: For the biscuits • 200g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • Pinch of salt • 80g icing sugar • 125g unsalted butter • 4 egg yolks For the filling • Strawberry or raspberry jam

Method: 1. Stir the almonds, flour, salt and icing sugar until combined. 2. Make sure the butter is soft (pop in the microwave for a couple of seconds if not) and add to the mixture. Mix until it looks like coarse sand. 3. Add the yolks of four eggs and stir until the mixture comes together in a dough. Knead the mixture when it becomes thick to make sure all the ingredients are incorporated. 4. Pop in the fridge to firm up for 15 minutes. 5. Protein shakes myth dispelled MATT LONG Protein shakes are undoubtedly the most popular training supplement on the market. However, there is a stereotypical belief that these supplements are only suitable for men. This is a myth. The word protein can sometimes be off-putting to women who are looking to achieve results in the gym due to its connotations of building up muscle and mass. The reality is that protein shakes offer a fast release of amino acids, essential before, during and after going to the gym, especially when weight training. Protein shakes are a liquid form of energy, which means faster digestion into the muscles. Whey – a type of protein contains the full amino acid profile making it a complete protein, suitable for use by both men and women. Their convenient use is what makes

them so popular, as they can be mixed with water, milk or even yoghurt to meet a desired taste or texture. Shakes are available in a range of different flavours and macronutrients, which means they can be used to help achieve different goals. For someone looking to gain weight, there are shakes that contain fat and carbs. However, for women who are just looking to get into shape, shakes that only contain protein are recommended.

Building muscles: Use these shakes alongside your normal exercise routine to go on your way to your dream body

Healthy eating on a skinny budget ZOE ARCHER

S

tarting university can do terrible things to your waistline, but the thought of eating healthily can be unappealing for so many reasons. As well as drinking plenty of water and trying to eat your five a day try these healthy recipes that won’t leave you strapped for cash. Why not swap your potatoes for the healthier sweet potato. Sweet potatoes can be used for all of your favourite meals and actually contain less carbohydrates and more fibre meaning they are better for you all round. Most supermarkets sell them for a very similar price to normal potatoes so they won’t break the bank.

To make sweet potato slices you’ll need (serves 1): • 1 sweet potato • 2 tbsp of olive oil • Pinch of salt • Pinch of pepper

Method: 1. Thinly slice the potato, don’t worry about peeling it. 2. Place them on the baking tray and drizzle olive oil over

them all. 3. Season with salt and pepper and pop them in the oven at 220 degrees. 4. Cook for 10-15 minutes.

These chip alternatives go perfectly with spicy chicken and salad. People often think healthy food takes a long time to cook and opt for the quicker fast food option. Why not try this healthy stir fry recipe that uses spaghetti instead of noodles. You will need: • 1 onion (finely chopped) • 1 tbsp of olive oil • Veg or meat of your choice (finely chopped) • Pre-cooked spaghetti • 1 crumbled stock cube • Pinch of salt and pepper

Method: 1. Add the oil and onions to a heated pan. 2. Add the meat and veg and cook thoroughly. 3. Add the crumbled stock cube and season with salt and pepper. 4. Place the pre-cooked spaghetti into the pan with the ingredients and stir. Ensure the spaghetti is hot and then serve.

Top tips to impress this Valentine’s Day GEORGIA FARQUHARSON

The day that singletons fear nearly as much as the boyfriends-without-a-clue do, is fast-approaching. The pressure to impress on Valentine’s Day can sometimes be a little over whelming, but fear not. We’re here to give you a gentle shove in the right direction of the best things to do in Nottingham, this Valentine’s Day. The city has a long list of restaurants but remember to book early – Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year. Carluccio’s, Jamie Oliver’ and Zizi are just to name a few. Find out her favourite food and let that inform your choice. You can’t go wrong with drinks after dinner, but remember she’ll be expecting champagne or cocktails and not a night at your local pub with all the lads. Pitcher and Piano is a high-end bar, set in a refurbished church in the Lace Market. Alternatively, if you’re really aiming to impress and your budget can stretch a little further, head over to the rooftop bar in the Corner House. Saltwater is home to the perfect romantic setting overlooking the bright lights of the city. Don’t want the first date to be so serious? Some girls will

The Lost City Adventure Golf: Your ‘fun’ option for this Valentine’s Day much prefer an alternative approach and the Corner House have just the place. The Lost City Adventure Golf is located in the bottom of the

Corner House and definitely ticks the ‘fun-date’ box. Make this Valentine’s Day personal, think outside of the box and be creative. Why

not take her back to the first place you met? She’s bound to appreciate anything you do, even more so if it’s thoughtful.

Don’t think that you have to spend an arm and a leg to impress that special someone this Valentine’s Day; after all, it’s the thought that counts.

Candy Crush Fun or time consuming horror? CASSIE SHIPLEY

It’s one of those games where people you don’t know that well ask you to play it on Facebook and you get so frustrated you delete them from your friend list However, Candy Crush is both infuriating and addictive at the same time. Hundreds of levels separate you from the ultimate goal of being further ahead Addictive: The game that divides opinion than your friends,

but is it actually worth playing? The first few levels are great, you complete them first time with no fuss, then it gets to the point where you’ve used all your boosters and there’s that one level you just can’t seem to master! Whether you succumb to paying actual money for more boosters or use the daily wheel to get a free one, climbing up the levels can become both monotonous and frustrating.

In addition to this, if you sync it with Facebook then expect constant pop-ups asking you to help people by giving them additional lives or more moves. Overall, it is a pretty fun game but my advice, don’t sync with Facebook and definitely don’t purchase anything in the app. Best way to conquer: don’t use all your boosters at the beginning and plan your moves carefully. Good Luck!

topBOOK The Secret by Rhonda Byrne Ever heard of a book that understands your mind better than you do? I know, mind blowing right. Rhonda Byrnes’ ‘The Secret’ discusses the law of attraction and how to use it in your everyday life. The bestseller introduces the concept that thoughts may not only influence our actions, but the experience they bring into our lives as well. The secret gives us three simple ideas; if you focus your attention on achieving a goal, believing that you have achieved it, but also that you have already done it – you can achieve anything in the world you set your mind on to. Focusing on what you don’t want means you are unconsciously drawing that into your life. The law of attraction is the principle in attracting whatever you focus your energy on, whether it’s relationships or academic success. The Secret is life changing; let your mind be blown away!

Ways to save GRACE COYNE It’s easy enough saying that you need to stop spending so much money, but deciding what on is a whole different matter. Heating your house isn’t really something that we want to compromise, but then again you can’t stop washing your clothes or having a shower either. So the best thing to do is find out if your electricity company charge cheaper rates at certain times of the day, as many do, then you can set timers so that the washing machine comes on in the middle of the night. Invest in a storage heater that stores heat at night when electricity is cheaper and releases it during the day, as you need it. The easiest way of all is to replace all your standard light bulbs with energy saving ones, they use much less electricity!

Richard Branson: How he got where he is today DARCIE CHAMBERS A nation that has long been a hotbed of entrepreneurial activity, tens of thousands of people in Britain have achieved financial independence by way of starting their own business. Undeniably, one of the most famous of those is London born, Sir Richard Branson.

Europe breaks made simple with research CASSANDRA SHIPLEY

Whether you like to stay at home or explore the world, these Valentine’s deals will keep the love flowing all weekend! Amsterdam is a popular destination all year round, and Valentine’s is no exception. Flying out from Luton you can be in one of the most romantic cities in the world in just over an hour. Many of their nightclubs hold special romantic nights and there’s even the chance to go for a horse and carriage ride round the country’s old cobbled streets. For £195.00 you can have all this of this for three nights with both flights and hotel included and departing on February 13th. Heating things up in one of Spain’s busiest cities, Valentine’s Day in Barcelona is something not to be missed. Fly out from Gatwick and be romancing it up in just over 2 hours! Popular romance ideas include: visiting the

magic fountain, taking a walk round Horta’s Labyrinth Park and an original amusement park at the top of Mount Tibidabo. It doesn’t get much better than that with flights and hotel for three nights, departing on February 13th for £179.00. However if you’re looking for something closer to home then why not treat you and your partner to a weekend in London. This Hilton hotel located in Canary Wharf allows you to have a luxury night’s sleep and see all the sights London has to offer during the day. The British Library is holding an old fashioned Georgian Valentine’s Ball, The Comedy Pub is holding a stand up night and Proud Camden is holding ‘Sound of Excellence’. Whether you’re a lover or a hater of February 14th these are just some ideas to get the romance flowing. You could always stay in, watch films and order a takeaway!

The 63-year-old began his first successful business venture, aged just 16, after dropping out of high school. With £300 borrowed from his mother, Sir Richard, who suffers from dyslexia, launched a youth culture magazine, The Student, distributing the first 50,000 copies for free after successfully attracting significant adver-

tisement from firms wishing to tap the student market. It was his keen business sense that soon after saw the setup of the mail order record company Virgin to complement the student magazine. The name was suggested by an early employee, who thought it was fitting because they were all new at business. From here on Virgin has

stemmed into what is now a major multinational company, including interests in transport, media, and entertainment, which in 2013 saw the high school dropout top a net worth status of $4.6 billion US dollars. In an interview with The Telegraph, back in October last year, the multi-billionaire argued that having personal-

ity and drive were more valuable than traditional education. Alongside his forthcoming plans for Space with Virgin Galactic, Sir Richard is this year calling on businesses to stand up for human rights, and is urging companies to move towards a plan B for business that puts people and the planet alongside profit.

If you’re looking to keep warm during this chilly season and still look trendy, you can’t go wrong with a vintage patterned jumper. This uniquely designed piece of knitwear costs only £13.50 with your student discount and is ideal for the cost efficient ‘hipster’! You can find it in the small bottom floor section at the Victoria Centre’s Urban Outfitters.

Student banking made easy WILLIAM WILSON Opening a student account is an essential part of university, and not only do you know this, but the banks do too. Therefore, as with everything nowadays, there is too much choice. As a result, students tend to go with the first bank they see. Big mistake! When researching student accounts, you should be looking at the

account that offers the best, but not necessarily the highest, interest-free overdraft. Why? Because living as a university student away from home for the first time could be expensive and you need to be able to manage your spending! To save you the hassle of comparing endless student account brochures, I recommend opening with NatWest. Most importantly,

they offer a manageable, interest-free overdraft of up to £2,000 that increases each year. You will be required to deposit £750 every six months, but your student loan will cover that. Other benefits include the app provided, which is very handy and easy to use, and the ‘emergency cash’ feature. For more information, follow the link: http:// personal.natwest.com/

on the wall as UoN’s keeper produced some good saves of his own and with the seconds running out allowing the celebrations to begin for the Varsity Ice Hockey 2014 champions, University of Nottingham. The 4-3 result will burn deeply in the thoughts of the Trent players, especially those who were around to witness the similar defeat of last year. With many more match reports to come keep an eye on the University Paper’s website for up to date action of the 2014 Varsity series.

th

he 2014 Varsity series started with a bang at the Capital FM Arena but unfortunately for Nottingham Trent, it also started with a loss. Yes there really is nothing better than kicking off the year with a grudge ice hockey match. Despite Trent coming out of the blocks quick, scoring three goals within eight minutes, the University of Nottingham never gave up, completing the comeback to inflict the same agonising 4-3 score line as last year. With each of the players’ names read out came a huge cheer from the different sets of supporters, it not seeming to matter that the University Of were deemed the home side for this event. The action followed and it was Trent who gained the early advantage making the University Of keeper make some good saves. The pressure continued and it soon told as the first penalty of the game went to Uni’s number nine, Simon Bell, for tripping. The away side soon made that advantage count with a well worked move allowing Ryan Rathbone to open the scoring after just under four minutes. It was too soon after with more indiscipline harming the men in green as Rathbone doubled his own tally and that of Trent’s on the five minute mark. With the home side desperate to not let the game go away from them they threw themselves back into the game with more attacking prowess. However, it was more joy for Trent soon after with Gareth O’Flaherty extending the lead to 3-0 with the ten minute mark still some way away. The University Of had it all to do as Trent sat back on their impressive three goal burst, however, this invited pressure on the defence and keeper with the latter having to make some good saves to keep the advantage at three. The pressure did tell near

the end of the period as the men in green pulled a goal back with a minute to spare. However, the indiscipline of their side had been the downfall to Trent’s three goals and the latter’s defence was the difference between the two sides. The University Of’s players might have felt a little hard done too as they were on the end of two disallowed goals in the first period. Going into the second period it was all about consolidation for the team in pink with the two goal advantage representing how clinical they had been from their ten shots on target. Penalties did start to creep in to the Trent game but they weathered the time well, even when they were reduced to three outfield players. It was inevitable that a goal was coming as the atmosphere in the arena reached a crescendo but to which side was less apparent. That was until the Uni Of made it clear who would be in the front seat by the end of the period. Two goals in a matter of minutes ensured the game was set up for a tense final period, with the University Of now having had 27 shots on goal compared to Trent’s 16. After just 45 seconds in the final period it looked like UoN had completed the comeback only to have their third goal of the night disallowed. Shots at both ends were coming thick and fast but UoN’s defence was dealing better with the pressure than Trent’s, a far cry from the events of earlier. Then the ultimate turning point. With nine minutes remaining, Trent’s reliance on their three goal come back to hurt them as the home side completed the comeback to take the lead at 4-3. Trent were left with it all to do and as expected they did come out more attacking but they weren’t helped by the match penalty handed to earlier hero, Rathbone with seven minutes to go. Trent come out on top in second leg of Varsity with impressive 40-12 victory

Trent avenge hockey defeat DAVID JAGGER Trent Rugby League levelled the Varsity series at 1-1 on Friday 7th Febuary with a 40-12 demolition of Uni of. Trent RL, who are currently third in the Premier South division, headed into the game as heavy favourites and very confident. From the first whistle, in front of a large crowd at Harvey Hadden Stadium, Trent lived up to their favourites tag, with aggressive defence from kick off, but struggled to keep hold of the ball in attack. After the opening exchanges, nerves settled and Trent’s forwards started to assert their dominance on Uni of, forcing play into their half. The deadlock was broken after nine minutes when Trent captain Jonny Shields

went over in the corner after a good attacking move from a scrum for Trent. Shields’ conversion attempt went just wide. Trent’s defence held up strong throughout the first half, and their dominance proved too much for Uni of to handle when Shields went over for his second try of the game on the half hour mark, again missing the conversion. Trent’s second row Sam Vose stretched the lead four minutes later, hitting a great line off to carve through the Uni of defence before powering over their full back to score. Shields kicked the conversion to make the score 14-0. With a minute left on the clock in the first half, Trent’s Matt Rowland returned a kick with some force, knocking a Uni of player out cold, which summed up how the

game was going, Uni of being unable to deal with Trent’s intensity and aggression. Trent started the second half the way they finished the first, pinning Uni of in their own half, but it was Uni of who got the first score on 44 minutes, capitalising on a poor pass from Trent to run 70 metres and go over to make the score 14-6. But it took Trent only 4 minutes to respond, with Jonny Shields diving over from two yards to claim his hat-trick. Play was briefly interrupted by a streaker shortly afterwards, but Trent didn’t let this distract them, with Shield claiming his fourth soon after, then successfully adding the conversion. Poor discipline and handling errors found Trent defending their own line, but terrific scrambling efforts in defence managed to hold

Uni of out. Three minutes later Trent charged their way up the pitch and scored again, Dave Jagger finding a gaping hole on the blind side to dive over to the delight of the Trent Army who were braving the Arctic conditions. Uni of managed to get another try back with ten minutes left, when their winger collected the ball from an inventive kicking play to race in under the posts, but it was mere consolation. With three minutes to go Trent spread the ball wide and Chima Odum powered his way through the defence to score in the right hand corner, but Shields again missed the conversion. They weren’t finished their though. With sixty seconds left Clark Squires floated a pass out to the wing inside Trent’s own half, and speedster Andrew Freedlander made up for an earlier error when he slipped in the in-goal area to mess up a certain try. He slammed on the throttle and flew past the defence, then brushed of Uni of’s full back before running under the posts to give Shields an easy conversion to make the final score 40-12. At the final whistle the players celebrated in true Trent fashion, with beer flying everywhere and plenty

asked me if I wanted to be captain. It was a silly question because of course I wanted to be!” said Holly. “Some players have played alongside each other before but there were others who had never met and we barely knew each other’s names,” said Holly. “I tried to get that family feel from the team

because you perform better if you gel.” With teams such as Canada, Russia and Japan in the competition – all of whom are ranked in the top 10 in the world – Holly was aware just how seriously it would be taken. “We knew it was going to be tough. In the Russian team there were players who

inBRIEF If you are having trouble finding a house or flat for 2014/15 then call one of the companies within the paper for some honest friendly help.

JOE HARBY It is of understandable concern to students… just how do you ensure that your house is 100% secure? We have all heard horror stories from friends who have friends of friends who have been burgled while on a night out. Only to come home to find their house trashed, their TV and Mac gone and the back door smashed in. Here are some tips to make sure this never happens to you! Always try and remember to lock your front door. It can be easy to forget, but how stupid would you feel if burglars walked right in through the front door?

Be careful: If you are worried about the safety of your house then let your landlord know Make sure to lock your bedroom door. This will make it ten times harder for any potential burglars to get at your most valuable possessions.

Never leave any windows open when you are going out. A quick check around your house or flat to verify that all windows are shut and locked only

One option you may not have thought about OLIVIA PETTER We all know that finding a student house in Nottingham can be stressful. Is it in the right location? Will I be close enough to other students? How much is the estate agency going to charge? Well, all of these questions could simply evaporate into thin air if you consider the tempting alternative that is a purpose built student apartment block. There are several companies in Nottingham that boast a huge number of advantages for students. All of the Unite properties are located in the heart of the student community; making them perfect for any Nottingham students wishing to

29

Unite St Peters Court UoN halls be close to University. Unite offers students parking, wifi, CCTV, bike storage and even laundry for those of us who still can’t tell the difference between a warm and a cold wash. They also have common rooms with flat screen TVs, Table Tennis and pool tables. Another company, StudyInn, ensures that students

have a busy social calendar by regularly putting events on for the tenants, making it easy for first years to meet each other. They have social nights as well as movie nights and more. They also have a onsite maintenance man to help you fix anything that occurs. Other student apartment blocks in Nottingham have onsite gyms as well as offering a flat screen TV in each room! So, if you’re struggling to find somewhere to live next year, or have simply had enough of communal living why not consider this tempting option? You will feel like you’re still in first year! takes a matter of seconds. It can be the difference between having a laptop, and having to claim a new one on the insurance because yours got stolen.

Be wary of anyone snooping around near your house, burglars normally scout out a house before they attempt to rob it, (don’t ask me how I know).

Finally, if you have any doubts about the security of your house such as weak doors, locks or windows, do not hesitate to contact your landlord. They can have extra locks put on as well as reinforce the door to make sure a tempted burglar cannot smash it down. It is their job to guarantee the security of the property.

Budgeting successfully LUCY ROGERS At this time of year, you will be getting ready to put a deposit down for your very own home for next year. Other than being wary of how to deal with a moody landlord, or proofing your house from the neighbourhood burglar, one of the most important things to budget for and calculate is your household bills. You need to consider how much water, gas and electricity you will use if it isn’t already included in your rent. Depending on how many there are of you in the house, the more people, the higher your bills are going to be

obviously, but you can also reduce costs through the usual money saving tricks. On average a two bedroom flat would use between £30 £70 per month on energy bills and water. Another option is using a company such as GLIDE, they sort all your bills out leaving you to pay just them. This usually works out slightly more expensive but has its advantages. This is the only piece of advice to save money on bills I can give you, as you can’t know how much you will use however your estate agent or landlord will be able to give you an accurate figure. Good luck!

Housemates can be hell but don’t fear here are two tips to help 1. Do you want a testosteronedriven house of boys, a pretty palace of girls or would you rather live in a mixed house to

make things more interesting? 2. Should you live with people you’ve met at your halls or with people from your course? Or is

living with complete strangers a risk worth taking? Coursemates will conveniently have the same workload and stress at the same

time as you and help is always there if you need it. However, sometimes you just want to escape from your studies which is

difficult if you’re surrounded by people from the course. View the full article at UniPaper. co.uk

Just the two of us: Living as a couple at university SAOIRSE MCSTAY The prospect of living with your ‘other half’ at university is undoubtedly a very exciting one; the chance to have your own space, to invite other couples over for dinner and gush about how great it is to be in a grown-up relationship. How adorable. However, couples who eagerly sign contracts with visions of happy families are

likely to have spent little time together in a domestic environment; making the potential for disaster enormous. I am not of the completely cynical opinion that couples who choose to live together are effectively signing a death warrant for their relationship, but I do think that people tend to rush into things without thinking logically about the pros and cons. Sure, you might say now that nothing

TopTips

Be careful I know a couple who lived together - it went very wrong, very quickly about the other person really annoys you, but I assure you that tiny issues can inflate enormously when you face them on a daily basis. Speaking to a student property landlord, I asked what the implications would be were a couple living alone to

break up, to which he quite frankly replied there was little that could be done. Though this would depend on whether the couple were renting a one- or two-bedroom property – of course, living in a single bedroom property means significantly

cheaper rent, but could be a little too intense for some. Nonetheless, living with your partner can be a really fun experience, and a commitment that will definitely strengthen and cement the bond. But you never know what could happen!

Moving into a flat or house can come with problems, so here are some good tips on what you should do as a tenant and what you should expect your landlord to do: Get what you have to pay and when in writing. Get a contents list and check it when you move in. Make sure your deposit goes into a deposit protection scheme (DPS). View the property and check for damp, damage etc. Check if bills are included and if not where they come from and what they might cost. Read everything before you sign and ask questions beforehand. Report problems to your landlord when you move in. For more information visit unipaper.co.uk
