A RECENT scientific breakthrough has proven that alcohol boosts IQ levels. Researchers at the National Alcoholism Association conducted a series of double-blind trials and found that alcohol can boost brain capacity by up to 72%. Although former studies have shown that moderate drinking can improve brain power, the NAA’s research shows that drinking six or more units of alcohol a day is actually far more beneficial. The volunteers, who drank over six units a night, every single night for a week, achieved extremely high scores in the series of IQ tests they were presented with. 21-year-old Emma Thomas, from Clifton, Bristol experienced the most dramatic boost in IQ. Emma’s IQ increased from a score of 93 before the trial, to a score of 150 afterwards - just 10 points off being classified a genius! Emma was elated, stating that: “I had always tried to only drink on special occasions, but after drinking so much during the trial, I experienced an astuteness which I never want to lose.” Dr. Tom Foole, Assistant Manager of the NAA, spoke of how these findings will do wonders for the economy: “The revelation of the benefits of alcohol will result in an increase in sales which will benefit economies worldwide.” IN NO WAY DOES THE UNIVERSITY PAPER CONDONE THE EXCESSIVE DRINKING OF ALCOHOL.

Champagne breakfast amber roberts Continued from page one... ALTHOUGH there is no proof that alcohol benefits the physical body, the NAA have announced that the chemical E4731, a component of alcohol, does wonders for the cerebral cortex. Dr. Al Kahool claims not to be surprised by the results: “A few of us in the neurological field have had suspicions about the longterm benefits of alcohol for a while, but could never find conclusive proof. Now that the NAA have done so, everything seems clear.” Science has long forged correlations between childhood intelligence and high alcohol consumption in adulthood - it seems
that intelligence itself is a factor which influences our consumption. Studies have revealed that children in the UK with very high IQs generally go on to drink almost double the amount of their counterparts with low IQs in adulthood. This seems to explain the binge drinking culture of university students, who are some of the most intelligent members of society. It is no surprise that some of the most brilliant minds of all time have been heavy drinkers such as Shakespeare, Einstein and Kingsley Amis. Perhaps William Blake was already aware of these facts when he wrote that ‘the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.’ The NAA’s trial found the most intellectually beneficial beverage to be champagne, which boosted the

But it seems like what goes around comes around as you have forgotten your phone. Not only did you not have the decency to say goodbye, it would be nice if you could have lasted more than 3 minutes in bed... Maybe if you’d at least been man enough to say goodbye to me then I could have forgiven you for your SHORTcomings. RESIDENT Charlie Roper has won your vote for a second time! During Charlie’s second year in leadership, it is hoped the days of ‘read from the PowerPoint’ lectures will soon be nothing but a distant memory! The President thinks students should be inspired and empowered to learn and wants to improve the quality of education by ensuring that the money students pay for fees are better invested. He also wants to address the reduction of contact hours on some courses. He also aims to identify
it more affordable and run later into the evening. To be honest, if they could just run on time that would be a good start! Charlie also believes that not enough people know what the Students’ Union does and endeavours to change this. He aims to improve communications through social media and to create events across all campuses entitled ‘President Presents’. I can confirm that this unfortunately does not mean Charlie is going to be bestowing gifts upon the students of UWE (boo!) but, he will be supporting and engaging every society, network and sports club at the University so, you know, it’s not all bad! www.unipaper.co.uk
Vice President for Societies and Communication: Hannah Khan HANNAH hopes to make societies more inclusive. She aims to improve access for disabled students, build connections between campuses and support societies in connecting with the local community. She also wants to make the Students’ Union feel relevant and accessible to everybody.

ROISIN Greenup is UWE’s newly elected Sport & Health VP. Roisin aims to end the disparity between campuses and make sports clubs and classes available to all students equally from Bower to Hartpury, Glenside to St Matt’s, Frenchay to Gloucester (Miami to Ibiza? N.B. Tinie Tempah was not included in Roisin’s manifesto). She also wants to make a wider range of classes available which function on a pay as you go basis. So you won’t be committed to attend that Zumba class when you are suffering from the mother of all hangovers! Yay! Roisin aims to make
transport cheaper for all clubs as smaller clubs are at a disadvantage and need more help subsidising transport to trips and events. She also hopes to re-evaluate sports teams’ representative clothing and make an impact with eye grabbing kit. Another of Roisin’s plans include making Varsity bigger and better with more matches, more events and more competition. Roisin states she is “excited to throw away any rose-tinted glasses and take the challenges we face as sports teams head on”. It looks like students have decided to put their Roisin-tinted glasses on instead!
Vice President Education: JJ Clark JJ wants students to have their money back if a lecture is cancelled and cannot be rescheduled. The average cost of a lecture is £27 so why should you waste that money? That’s enough for a night out! He also aims to save a stonking 1.2 tonnes of paper per year by replacing paper timetables with QR codes that can be updated to let students know what’s going on. (QR codes are the futuristiclooking black and white boxes you can scan with your smartphone).
Vice President Community and Welfare: Scarlett Oliver AMONGST Scarlett’s aims include a new minibus link from campus to an ASDA supermarket, introducing trusted taxi links to and from the University and ensuring that students apply for their student funding in time and are aware of the financial help and support they are entitled to.

She also hopes to introduce a ‘try before you buy’ trial period at the gym at the beginning of every term and expand the range of sports available at UBU Active and Fit & Fabulous. She’s also determined to keep Bristol fit with regular health and nutrition classes. Move over Gillian Mckeith!

Union Affairs Officer: Jo Woods JO wants to publish a fortnightly newsletter to keep us all in the loop about union wide activities, AMM and RAG week so we can all get involved! She also wishes to introduce a Refreshers fair, which means students can join societies midyear so, come February it won’t be too late to join the Pancake Society that you just couldn’t commit to in October. Jo also plans to arrange more external speakers after the success of Charles Boden from NASA. Looks like the stars will be out in Bristol next year! (N.B. HE Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol, Professor Sir Eric Thomas, has revealed he is stepping-down in August 2015 after nearly fourteen years in the position. He is one of the longest serving Vice-Chancellors in the UK. Thomas, who was knighted in the 2013 Birthday Honours for services to higher education stated: “My time at Bristol has been the most enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling of my professional career and I shall miss
the role, the university and the staff and students dreadfully.” He went on to say: “I am fiercely proud of our students and I know that you will continue to be a credit to yourselves and to your university.” (The Vice-Chancellor cleary hasn’t been to Bunker on a Monday night!) Professor Sir Eric Thomas also said: “I believe it will be the right time for a new leader to take Bristol onto the next stage of its development.” Thomas’s departure leaves a vacancy for a highly pres-
tigious job but it has not yet been announced who will fill the void the Vice-Chancellor will leave. However, the positions of the team that will assist his/ hers Vice-Chancellery have recently been confirmed. Professor Guy Orpen is to become the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor following David Clarke’s retirement in July 2014. Also, Professor Nishan Canagarajah, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and Professor Judith Squires, Dean of Social Sciences and Law, are to become Pro Vice-Chan-
cellors in the next academic year (Pro Vice-Chancellors basically assist the Deputy Vice-Chancellor). Professor Sir Eric Thomas will be 62-years-old when he steps down next year. During his time in the position, the University has undergone extensive building work and he also had to deal with the independent school boycott. The University Paper wishes him a happy retirement in which he can revel in his interests of Golf and Newcastle United and follow his desire to travel after a job well done!

Floods: Result of climate change?
RISTOL is commemorating the hundred year anniversary of the start of the Great War in a way that makes it more personal than ever before. Whilst stories of brave men dying in the throes of war have been well-documented over the years through pictures, poetry and even school lessons, Bristol is marking this centenary in an especially poignant manner with one hundred personal tales from people all over the South West. Historians from UWE have been collaborating with the BBC on its programme, World War One at Home, to give an insight into the lives of people who were affected at home in World War One. Historian, Kent Fedorowich, and Associate Professor at the Bristol Business School, Charles Booth, were appointed
lyubomira kirilova THE recent flooding in the South of England could be a sign of a climate change, new research reveals. The investigation, conducted by UWE, Loughborough University and the University of East Anglia, has produced a new index of flooding trends, suggesting the sequences of weather leading to the recent floods occur once every 25 years. Based on the association between the atmospheric pressure patterns at the time and the concurrent recorded flood events, the research claims that four of the six most severe floods since 1871 have occurred in the last 30 years.
“A flood-rich period for Britain” Professor Wilby of Loughborough said: “Such a flood-rich period in the context of a 144 year record is very unusual and linked to the large number of cyclones passing over the country.” The new indices will be used to track longterm changes in weather patterns linked to widespread flooding. as national advisors to support the research. Fedorowich describes the programme as looking at the lives of people in the war from “new angles”. He says this adds a “richness and variety to these often familiar subjects”. Fedorowich also said: “The stories that the journalists in each of the regions have unearthed have been amazing.” Whilst many Bristolians are familiar with the story of Harry Patch - Somerset’s own ‘Last Fighting Tommy’ – many are not aware of Bristol’s contribution to the war. Patch, who helped to build UoB’s Wills Memorial Building, was honoured after his death in 2009 with a £10,000 memorial in Wells. Along with Patch some 55,000 other men from around Bristol enlisted in the Great War - 7000 lost their lives. Also, men from the University of Bristol gained forty-six medals of honour including the Distin-
guished Flying Cross. The tragedy of war is frequently focused on the honoured fighters we lost. It is often those at home, however, whose suffering is forgotten. Avonmouth became the centre of British chemical warfare manufacturing where twenty tons of Mustard Gas was made every day. The workers suffered due to this, however, with 1,400 illnesses reported over a six month period by 1,100 workers. Whilst tragic, these are only numbers. The hundred stories told to mark the centenary on BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, BBC Wiltshire and BBC Somerset help to bring real meaning to the statistics. We are remembering those who may have been forgotten; the tragic losses, heroic victories and everyday struggles and triumphs that affected so many extraordinary, ordinary people.

The Bloodhound Supersonic Car is currently being developed by a team of Formula 1 and aerospace experts in Avonmouth, Bristol. The project aims to not only break - but smash - the current World Land Speed
Record (763 mph) and reach a sensationally speedy 1,000 mph! It is going to be driven by Andy Green, who has held the aforementioned record since 1997 and was the first person to break the sound barrier on land. UWE is a founder sponsor of the Bloodhound SSC, and is also leading university level engagement in the project, developing materials and case studies for use by partner universities.
Dr John Lanham, who leads the project for UWE, said: “One of the key objectives of Bloodhound SSC is to raise interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects amongst young people to meet future skills shortages in the UK economy.” He continues: “The project is using the technical challenges of designing, building and running a car that will raise the World Land Speed Record to
over 1,000 mph or Mach 1.4, to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and mathematicians.” The team plan to test the speed machine in the UK next year before running it in South Africa in the summer of 2015. Life in the slow lane paige williams MAYOR George Ferguson has made another decision sure to enrage the motorists of Bristol. Many speed limits of the residential roads in South Bristol have been reduced to 20mph. The draft Speed Limit Order has been issued after the pilot schemes in the
south and east of the city were seen to be a success, with an apparent 82% of residents in favour of the reduced speed. However, are statistics to be believed? After all, only 29% of Bristol voted for a Mayor and of that percentage, Ferguson only managed to poll 40% (circa 50,000 people of a population of 432,500).
In his Twitter bio, the Mayor claims to be an ‘Establishment rebel’. And apparently nothing says rebel like driving at 20mph... Well, it turns out he wasn’t the only student in Bristol to get involved! Hannah Lawton and Lauren Morton, who both study at UWE, also dared to take on the notoriously difficult physical challenge. Unfortunately, they had to abandon their attempt after 90 days as they faced a number of problems that left them floating adrift in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I’ve decided to get off my high horse and join in – charity’s charity, right?

A CAMPAIGN group, Action on Junk Food Marketing, is leading a call for controls on junk food advertising during primetime family viewing. On behalf of the group, the University of Liverpool studied 750 adverts shown during a range of family-friendly programmes and found that around one tenth of adverts were for unhealthy foods. The campaign also has backing from the Children’s Food Campaign, the British Heart Foundation and doctors in the hope that it will help tackle childhood obesity. The Golden Snitch in Japan? Megan davies
A JAPANESE inventor has revealed a ball that could revolutionise the way we play sport. The HoverBall, akin to the Golden
Snitch, is not powered by magic, but by a 90 millimetre drone inside it, which enables it to hover. The inventors hope that it will democratise some sports as it can be programmed to slow down for children or the elderly and can also be made to avoid star players.

She explains why she is auctioning her virginity and is “not under the slightest bit of financial pressure.” She goes on to talk about her views on virginity, prostitution and self-worth. Raine promises the winning bidder a “sensual 12-hour date” that will transform her “from virgin to literal whore.”

Interview: Frank Turner Back in the UK, Turner reveals all to The University Paper Daniel robbins Have you and the band been to Bristol before and, if so what do you think to the city? Do you have any special memories? Yeah, we’ve been through many times, played most venues in the city, some that are now gone! I also came through with Million Dead quite a bit - my old band. How has the ‘FTHCFLAG’ been supported on tour so far? I’m not sure if anyone is doing one for this UK run. We had one here last year and some people made their own one in the USA, which was amazing. It’s a cool, little idea.
Which of the many places you have performed across the world has been your favourite and why? I love playing in America. Texas in particular is a great place for music, food and drink. Germany is also awesome. We (me and the Sleeping Souls) have been fortunate enough to visit a lot of different parts of the world. What are the best and worst parts of being on the road for so long? The best part is that you travel and play music for a living and you get to make friends all over the world. On the other hand,
Friendship: Turner said that making friends was one of the best parts of being an artist. Here he is with the Sleeping Souls.
those friendships are, by necessity, long distance and strained. You miss weddings, birthdays, christenings and funerals. It’s pretty disjointed. But it’s also something I choose to do, so it’s not like I can complain about it. Do you enjoy being back in England after going on tours across the world?
Yes, very much so, it’s nice to be home and home country shows always have a special vibe to them. If you weren’t an artist what would you be and why? Trying to be an artist? (Chuckles). Maybe a teacher. What are your aims for 2014 and beyond?
I’m working on some side projects, a book and a new record. My aim is to keep moving, keep creating, and hopefully stay interesting. Going back, how special was it to perform at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games? Would this rank as your biggest music achievement?
I wouldn’t rank it as that, no. I was asked to do the show by Danny Boyle, which was nice, but I’m not sure how much of an achievement that is. It was fun, weird, unique, but not something I dwell on that much. For more interviews and entertainment visit www. unipaper.co.uk

Time to hit the road with Room 94 Embarking on their first tour, Room 94 had a lot to say to The University Paper Daniel Robbins How does it feel to be embarking on your first UK tour? We are really excited as we have done all the support tours up and down the country and are excited about the prospect of being on our own tour. These are set to be our biggest shows so it is a mixture of nerves and excitement. How much did you enjoy being support acts for Lawson and Union J? We got on with Lawson really well and they gave us loads of tips on how to make it to where they are. We also notice the further north we went, the rowdier the crowds got! So we are looking forward to starting in Nottingham and especially Rescue Rooms which we have played a couple of times before. How exciting will 2014 be for the band with the likes of your first album coming out as well as a DVD?
The album is obviously really exciting but the DVD is a little bit different in the fact it aims to give a behind the scenes look at our time as a band. We have filmed everything since 2010 and it has covered the fun stuff, as well as serious happenings. Do you find it weird how many fans you have managed to get in Poland? Yes it is pretty strange as not many bands go to Poland. It all started when Keiron and Dean did a One Direction cover which Polish fans loved on Twitter. They are really passionate about their music and it is an amazing, if not weird, feeling when you are being mobbed by hundreds of fans at the airport. What would you all be doing if you weren’t in a band? That’s a tough one really as all we have ever known is music. Kit would probably be doing something mechanical as he used to work with cars beforehand. Other than that

I think the rest of us would be pursuing a music-related career. What has been your biggest achievement to date? We always work towards little milestones if possible and outdo what we did the last day. The album and tour are our most recent milestones but playing at a venue such as London KOKO was immense as we have all been there before to watch other artists, but to perform there is unreal. Who are your idols and why? We’ve always loved listening to bands such as Blink 182 and All Time Low as that was the trend when we started out. However, since then we’ve listened to everything from Drake to cheesy pop and take influences in order to adapt our style so we don’t get boring. Strictly Bangers: An Interview with the creators of Piff Michael quinn
P
IFF began in 2011 and since then has established itself as a top night in Bristol with a strong list of line-ups, not to mention the inclination to dabble in an eclectic mix of genres. I met up with the night’s creators, Yanis, Liam, Harri and Ross, two years after the night’s inception to see how things were going. What would you say influenced your change from a bass orientated student night, to a more house focused Friday night slot? We all arrived in Bristol with our own varied musical tastes, so that came across as the night began. As we got to know each
other, we all started getting into House and it was an exciting thing as most of us didn’t really know much about it, so it was a natural progression really. You’ve played in a wide range of clubs around Bristol, which one do you think best suits the vibe you’re going for? We really like our intimate venues, so our birthplace, Timbuk2, is obviously our venue of choice for the smaller nights. For bigger scale nights it’s got to be Lakota - it’s got a proper raw, underground feel. To be honest, it all depends on what kind of night it is. After a brief pause it appears you’ve got things going again. What plans do you have for the future?
On a local level, we’re going back to our original Wednesday night slot and we’re also lucky enough to be playing Bath Fest and then Bristol’s own Love Saves The Day festival. We’ve also been asked to perform at Glastonbury which is going to be our highlight of the summer. I guess the eventual aim is to try and push our own music, but we’re just concentrating on throwing good parties at the moment. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming vibes from the Piff family! Make sure you check out www.unipaper.co.uk for updates on the latest Piff nights. You can also like us on Facebook for more regular updates on whats going on in Bristol.

Happy April Fools’ Day, sucker! Olivia Annet-Short
APRIL Fools’ is the day you don’t see coming until it is too late. We all have childhood memories of April Fools’ Day. Mine consist of my brother tricking my family with pranks influenced by his favourite Indiana Jones booby traps. Thanks to the internet, pranks have increasingly become a part of our culture. In 2010, New York hosted ‘The No Underwear Subway Ride’. This involved 1,000 people riding the subway and removing what appeared to
be their underwear in front of bystanders (don’t worry, they were really wearing nude-coloured underwear!). Last year, Times Square was taken over by 2,000 people walking backwards for 5 minutes. The results were both confusing and hilarious for tourists and locals. This day is the perfect excuse to bring out your inner child and get revenge on pranksters of years past. Whether you’re a fan or not, April Fools’ Day keeps you guessing and who knows what’s in store for you this year!

ITH the end of awards season comes the time when film studios release light-hearted movies of lesser quality, which cannot compete for the moviegoers’ attention at any other time of the year. This is why Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is a nice surprise in an otherwise less than exciting film season. Set in the fictional country of Zubrowka, somewhere in Central Europe, during a period of endless wars, the film is a visionary masterpiece, inspired by Stefan Zweig’s work. Ralph Fiennes, as the eccentric concierge M. Gustave, leads an all-star cast, including Adrien Brody, F. Murray Abraham, Tilda
‘The film is a visionary masterpiece’ Swindon, Willem Defoe, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Saoirse Ronan, Tom Wilkinson and many more. The story is as quirky as anything else Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom) has done. The charmer, M. Gustave, is famous for pleasuring the richest and oldest ladies, who are usual guests of the hotel. His favourite, Madame D. (Tilda Swindon) passes away and leaves him the priceless painting ‘Boy with Apple’. Her family, however, do not wish to part with anything from her rich
heritage, accusing Gustave of her death and involving him and his surprising new friend, the lobby boy Zero (Tony Revolori), in a series of hilarious adventures. While the story is filled with amusing moments and unconventional characters, it is not short of sequences paying direct homage to older movies – a melancholic nod to the 1930s, when most of the film is set. Once again Anderson collaborates with Milena Canonero (The Darjeeling Limited), whose costume design is quite impressive, adding to every single character’s personality. Too funny to be missed, the film can now be seen at The Watershed. Visit www.unipaper.co.uk for more film reviews, or add us on Facebook for regular updates.

Queue do you think you are? Jo Wassel QUEUING is known as a particularly ‘British’ thing. Can we please learn this art?! I fail to see what it is that gives students the idea that they are somehow exempt from common courtesy. Being young and free and blah blah blah should not render us uncivilised (well, not in broad daylight). Don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a time and place for the rabble – namely the clubs. But there is nothing more frustrating than being shoved to one side on a cold, wet, windy day, as a hoard of people fight to converge onto the bus. In fact, forget the cold, wet, windy day – it’s downright annoying whenever. This is just one example of the lack of manners exhibited by most students, which on the whole are rather shocking. Too many times I have seen a bus driver being made to ask students to give up
those seats at the front for an elderly person – or even beg someone to give their seat to a girl with crutches. Do people just not think anymore? Have we lost the art of thinking about anything other than our precious selves? Students especially seem far too wrapped up in their own cosy world, or too worried about their own busy lives to even consider helping other people. Of course, not every student acts like this, and it would be wrong to suggest that (here’s a shout out to the girl who ran off the bus after me to give me my umbrella!). But the majority of us seem to have a disturbing apathy towards any notion of ‘respect’. Whilst this may seem reflective of modern society in general, it is particularly noticeable amongst students. We demand respect, but we don’t give it. And that needs to change. Studying English at UoB

I don’t think anyone is under the impression that the UWE buses run like a well-oiled machine, but being driven right past with a half empty bus while standing in the freezing cold and rain after waiting for half an hour really gets to me. In fact, it makes me want to cry. Why is it they feel they can pick and choose who to pick up? It’s not optional – you’re a bus! I’ve even seen them drive past a granny on a bus with about five people on it, just so they can get to their fag break quicker. Sort it out! Studying Philosophy at UWE.

TopPick Come on, UWE! I find the cost of joining sports clubs at UWE totally ridiculous. For those of us who only want to join one club the sports passport adds 30% on average to the cost, meaning it is only worthwhile if you want to join a few clubs. Surely the whole negativity of the student lifestyle with all the drinking and smoking, as well as the total lack of money as a result of these things should mean UWE tries to encourage us to play sport not put us off?! COME ON, UWE! DON’T TAKE THE MICK! Another thing: exam timetables need to be released earlier. I’d booked my girl’s holiday to Ibiza early on, as most people do because of the decent deals online, and was very excited! I had been on at the tutors asking when the exams would be and nobody could tell me anything. I then found out last week that the date clashes with the time I had booked it for. Very angry. The Mall Fashion Show gives The University Paper insight into the Spring/Summer trends and shows us how to look hot in the Sun! Anna osborne
W
ith spring well on its way and summer fast approaching, retail shops have been busy selecting stock to prepare people for this year’s Spring/Summer trends. Bristol Fashion week sported clothes from Marks &Spencer, Wallis, River Island, Gap, Timberland, John Lewis, Ann Summers, Austin Reed, Next, Warehouse, Animal, BHS, Karen Millen and CC/Viyella. A range of trends were also unveiled on the runway from nautical to Bollywood. Despite the shops having a range of target audiences, Bristol Fashion Week exhibited a rainbow of bold
and shocking colours that managed to light up even the plainest of clothes. Fuchsia pink seemed to be the most popular of all, appearing in almost all of the collections. In addition, an outburst of floral dominated the runway making it a must have print this summer. Collections from River Island, Warehouse and Animal were the most affordable collections for students. Warehouse sported a radiant collection with big brush strokes and paint splashes creating a positive positioning of colour. The jumpsuits from Warehouse were one of my favourite items of clothing shown on the night - very simple but effective. Perfect for both casual and formal occasions and would go well with big
statement jewellery. Monochrome patterns seemed to be a popular print for River Island, with black and white shorts, tops and dresses. The black and white colour theme is modern but can also look very elegant and mature for those who have interviews or placements. Animal’s surfing theme will be perfect for those going on holiday this summer with light flowing dresses and floral tops. Ann Summers’ Bollywood theme gave an exotic twist to the show. The saris worn by the models will be an essential item for your suitcase on a beach holiday. They are easy to wear and can complete an outfit. There are a variety of bright colours From smart, casual wear to bikinis: The Mall fashion show shows us the must-haves for Spring/Summer that are available in store.

O YOU think knitting is a hobby reserved solely for the sweet, old grannies and awkward, bespectacled hipster girls of the world? Well think again! At UWE, Cathy Van Hear’s original and remarkable knitting talents have bagged her a cool £2,500 bursary from the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters. The final year BA (Hons) Fashion student beat out competition entries from BA and MA Fashion students all over the UK! Cathy’s final year work, which caught the eye of judges, stems from her love of combining contrasting themes. In her novel knitwork, Van Hear artistically weaves a blend of Moroccan culture, the character Marla Singer of Fight Club fame and post-apocalyptic imagery. That may sound like an odd

concoction but it looks fab! Upon receiving the award, Cathy said: “It has allowed me to be really creatively free and experimental with my work, which has been fantastic. I’m also really keen to stay in touch with the Company after I graduate, as the help and guidance they offer is great, and their support will be brilliant whilst I am looking for work in the future, as I hope to work in the knitwear and textiles industry.” Alison Taylor, a lecturer, on
behalf of the Fashion team at UWE said: “We’re thrilled when we heard the news about Cathy’s achievement. We are not surprised that Cathy won the bursary as her experimentation with knitted techniques is innovative and unique. The colours in her range are exciting and reflect her market research. We have a brilliant technical team in Fashion and this award reflects the fantastic work that the team are doing.” Looks like there’s more to yarn than the nanny-knitted jumpers of my youth with the too-long sleeves and too-big neck holes… I’m casting off now. The University Paper goes on a hunt to find the most fashionable students
Student fashion snaps Sorcha bradley HARRIET Taylor-Potts, 20, brings grunge back to Bristol and with it a break from the Fluro Adidas sports jackets and New Balance trainers donned by the fashion conscious 20-somethings of the ASS Library. Harriet teams her vintage leather jacket with acid washed jeans and e-bay bought DM’s for a look that is definitely ‘tough- girl chic’.
ONJ DATTA, 20, makes herself known as a ‘Belieber’ with this statement top stolen from her girlfriend - similar tees are currently available on Etsy. Onj goes for pops of colour with bright red shorts and teal Barbour jacket, finishing the look with effortlessly cool Ray-Ban Wayfarers.
Elizabeth penny DANIEL Moody is an Illustration student from UWE. He has teamed a crisp, white shirt (Urban utfitters) with casual wear. This keeps the look smart when combined with his Coat from Five Points and his jeans from Topshop. His practical walking boots from Size (stylish when worn in this way) complement Daniel’s outfit whilst keeping the flood water out.

Incorporating vintage into your daily style
A
DEDICATION to vintage clothing takes a considerable amount of time and effort but it’s certainly worth it. You must prepare yourself mentally to trawl endlessly through vintage and charity shops for your prized pieces. Firstly, it’s always good to have an idea of what you’re looking for before venturing out. If new to these types of shops they can tend to be a bit overwhelming, leading to frustration and alternative purchases. However, when you do begin rampantly purchasing, be sure to not overdo it when getting dressed! It is better to incorporate these unique pieces than swamp yourself
in them. Always keep an eye out for classic pieces and designer brands, charity shops tend to be thwart with them so be keen and persist. When browsing, double-check your items. As vintage clothing is ‘pre-loved’ there are often pieces that are slightly damaged and even those beyond your tender and loving repair. Don’t just think of clothing but also the use of accessories. If it is classic, go wild with statement pieces and if it is not, then leave your retro outfit to simply do the talking. Blast from the past Olivia Annet-Short
WHEN you first saw Cheryl Cole’s rose tattoo stretching across her buttocks, you may have thought tattoos don’t get worse than that. You’d be wrong. Here is a line-up of the crude, the bad and the ugly. Tulisa’s ‘Lucky You’ Tattoo Inked indiscreetly just above her crotch, this one says all you need to know about Britain’s most famous chav. The Spelling Mistake Whilst correcting spelling mistakes is usually reserved for red-penned teachers and internet trolls, a permanent error etched across your body is just unforgivable. RANSPORT yourself back in time this Spring with an effortlessly glamorous 1920s look. If you have a party coming up or you just want to add some sophistication to your wardrobe, why not do it with a vintage twenties flapper dress? Following last year’s release of The Great Gatsby, we all went a bit crazy for loose fitting, beaded dresses and all the sophistication that comes with the look. With drop hems back in this season, it’s time to say good-bye to tight fitting dresses and embrace the twenties all over again. This is undoubtedly a look we associate with luxury and decadence, which is perhaps what makes twenties dresses such great party wear! Naff Clothing is this season’s hot spot for gorgeous vintage flapper dresses. Located on Cotham Hill, Naff Clothing offers a range of elegant, high

Will we ever see ‘normal-sized’ women on a magazine cover? Olivia Haines WITH the influence of films such as Bridget Jones’ Diary, which celebrate the everyday, ‘normalsized’ woman, it seems only inevitable that these character types should gradually exert an influence over the media. The ubiquitous, skeletal figures dominating the magazines only serve to enhance the insecurities of female readers. They provide a warped and tampered-with perception of beauty whereas, in reality,
April 2014
the truth behind acquiring the ‘perfect’ body image often leaves much to be desired. Only recently has the media began to pay attention to other body types and, more importantly, to recognise them as equally sexy and beautiful. A woman’s self-image is determined largely by the world around her. That our Western world equates beauty with thinness means that the ‘normal-sized’ woman is yet to be fully
appreciated. However, plus-sized models are certainly, though gradually, making their way into the magazines; there is progress with regards to seeing the ‘normal-sized’ woman in the media. One thing we can hope for is that with the fast-moving pace of our world, with its changing trends and fashions, perhaps there will be a reassertion of a newer, truer image of women. Checkout www.unipaper. co.uk for more.
We look into the past to see why 1920s clothing has come roaring back into fashion ‘we all went a bit crazy for loose fitting, beaded dresses’ quality twenties-style dresses and accessories including head pieces, gloves and real vintage fur. Commenting on their unique twenties collection, owners Kate and Tina said: “Our customers tell us they feel like a million dollars when they wear our dresses - the attention to detail is what makes them so special.” “Our dresses make our customers feel like they have stepped into a time machine. They want to wear something
that looks like it’s from The Great Gatsby or Downton Abbey and that’s what we can offer them”. With dress and accessory rentals ranging from £40£50 with an additional 10% discount for students, Naff Clothing really is your one stop shop for this season’s favourite fashion fix! Kick-start the season in style and attend those upcoming fancy dress parties with a touch of the twenties. We all have a glamorous and sophisticated side that’s just waiting to be unleashed! Best in Bristol The University Paper provides you with a lowdown of our top three resturants here in Bristol ARE YOU one crazy food-lover? If the answer is yes, look no further, as I am about to reveal the best places in our city with the yummiest food, which will unquestionably leave you finger-licking and begging for more! My favourite restaurant by a mile is undoubtedly the provider of the hot and spicy Latin cuisine, Las Iguanas. Serving a variety of different dishes, from Blazing Bird to Fajitas and nachos, its motto, ‘Eat Latin, Drink Latin,’ says it all! You can find Las Iguanas
on Merlin Road in Cribbs Causeway, Whiteladies Road in Cliton and Millenium Square on the Harbourside. Piaza di Roma, situated at the top of Whiteladies Road in Clifton, has also made the list of my favourite restaurants in this brilliant city. In contrast to the bustling Las Iguanas which is a chain restaurant all over the UK - Piaza di Roma is a small, independent yet charming place which is undoubtedly one of the best Italian venues I have ever been. They are known for their stone-baked pizzas
and their bruschetta is also a must-try! Last but not least is Bill’s, situated in one of Bristol’s busy shopping areas on Queen’s Road. Open from ‘Breakfast to Bedtime’, Bill’s offers its customers’ delicious, diverse and distinctive cuisine. From crispy duck salad to Bill’s fish pie, everything is absolutely scrumptious! Do not depart without trying the warm chocolate brownie! So what are you waiting for? Rush to these palatable places immediately! For more food articles visit www.unipaper.co.uk.

Olivia Petter ON 1st April, Pizza Express is launching an exciting new ‘Express Lunch’ menu across branches in central Bristol that will tingle your taste buds and accommodate your student budget. Of course there is pizza, - however, as a lighter option, why not opt for a Insurance Superfood Salad? Freshly made soup is also on offer. Served with freshly baked dough loaves and garlic butter, you will be feeling full and satisfied at the cost of only £3.45. The star of this new menu, however, is most certainly the Piadina Access
(above). Think gourmet Italian pitta bread with a range of delicious stuffings, including the P.L.T, which puts a Pizza Express twist on the classic B.L.T by using pancetta instead of bacon. If you don’t have enough time to indulge in a leisurely lunch in the restaurant, why not grab a Piadina to go? In fact, all options are available to take away. U
NIVERSITY of Bristol graduates, Rob Hall and Yasmin Amarante, have invented Wriggle, an app due for release in April that will allow the more spontaneous people of Bristol to find last minute deals at their favourite independent restaurants and bars. Home to tens of thousands of students, helping those short on cash to live a more sociable life-style is something Bristol has to address in order to maintain its reputation as the best UK city to live in. This is a problem when its thriving local economy drives prices up. While this is something larger chains relish, independent establishments with an inconsistent flow of customers are forced to waste fresh produce. Wriggle has been created to help with this problem by filling last minute seats at venues that might not always be known for putting on deals. The app won’t only benefit the businesses of Bristol, though. The makers
of Wriggle assure its potential users that it will help them get out more often - for less. In a statement, the Wriggle team stated: “We know people these days don’t always plan nights out in advance. With Wriggle, you’ll have the ability to flick through on-the-day offers from some great independent places to help you make last minute decisions, save money and find high quality local places, hand picked by the Wriggle team.” If you can’t wait until April then the app is currently trialling via a trust-based email system, which you can sign up for at www. getawriggleon.com. This means that on arrival at the participating restaurant, users of the app won’t have to pay a penny! Rob Hall has received support from Bristol City Council as well as the help of UoB undergraduates, Daniel Waller and Neel Shah. As a result, Bristol will hopefully see the independent restaurant business flourish as lesser-known establishments waste less and develop more. www.unipaper.co.uk.

OU are being charged an interest rate of c6.6% (rate of inflation plus 3%) and this is applied from the date you take out your loan. Interest is calculated and added monthly and is therefore compounded. This means that each month the percentage of interest is applied to a slightly higher figure than you borrowed as the interest is added. How much interest will I accrue whilst at university? It depends how much you borrow! If you take out the full student loans for both tuition (at £9000 p.a) and maintenance (at £5,500 p.a) over 3 years, you will borrow £43,500. Once interest has been applied (at 6.6%) you will owe £49,688 at the end of 3 years.
What happens when I start work? Once you earn above £21,000 you will be charged interest of RPI plus 3% on your loan. (Below £21,000, you are charged an interest rate of RPI only). On a loan of £49,688 (and an interest rate of 6.6%) this would equate to annual interest of £3,342, once
‘The government could ‘sell’ its student loan book to the private sector’
you have paid back 9% of earnings above £21,000.
The debt just keeps growing Interest accrues significantly each year. If you are earning £35,000, for example, you would be making annual payments of £1260, but interest would be accruing at three times that amount (£3878). Your debt grows every year. You will need to be earning over £60,000 before your debt actually stops growing every year. At this salary level, you would still however only be paying the interest back.
What about when I want to buy a house? Your student debt repayments will reduce your income. This will reduce the amount a lender will lend to you. Mortgage companies work on the basis of lending you a multiple of your income or salary. Can the 3% interest rate change?
The ball and chain: Student debt can become a large burden for many students in the UK. Make sure you know the ins and outs
Yes. Future governments could decide to extract higher returns. The contract you sign commits you to ‘repay your loan in line with the regulations at the time and as they are amended’. The government could ‘sell’ its student loan book to the private sector. This may have the effect of putting interest rates up. What can I do? Be aware of what you have committed to. If you do not need to take a loan – do not take it, or at least do not take the maximum. Try and work instead to pay your way through university. Once you start to work, try and pay off your loan quickly.
Money will not be a problem if you use your set of skills
IT IS impossible to ask young people to be sure of a career path when they leave school at 16? So many throw themselves into the first job they find, while others jet off to university to study something they believe to have an interest in. But, the harsh truth is that many people reach
their twenties realising they have taken the entirely wrong vocation. There is no need to worry; many degrees provide you with transferable and versatile skills that can open the door to other professions other than the one you are specifically trained in. Most degrees will train
people to have good communication skills to prepare you for any job that is out there. So don’t worry if you no longer want a career in the degree you’re studying and you realise it isn’t the one for you there are other options. For more articles on money please visit www. unipaper.co.uk.

FESTIVALS in Britain are a certain kind of grisly; mud, rain, wellington boots, suffocation by mosh pit... But festivals do not have to be like this! Imagine gorgeous bright white sands instead of a muddy field and imagine waking up to the heat of the sun rather than the heated argument of the adjacent tent! I speak of The Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (FIB) in Spain. I went there last year and the line-up included the Artic Monkeys, Brandon Flowers and Primal Scream. This year FIB takes place between 17th – 20th July and Kasabian have been confirmed as the first headliners! Tinie Tempah, Katy B, Jake Bugg, Chase & Status, The 1975 and Kodaline have also confirmed. With the four day weekend ticket coming in at £158, the festival is cheaper than English festivals such as Reading, V Festival and Download, but of course you’ll also have to pay for travelling and as there is no local airport, you’ll have to book trains and buses. Any festival will cost you a lot of your hard-earned money so why not enjoy the music in a foreign clime! The experience is a riot!

Potential bias on the panel Sukhvir Gill
R
ECENTLY some universities suspended students involved in the various student protests that have been going on at a number of different university campuses. Internal disciplinary matters followed. However, inone case at a particular university, the Internal Panel Hearing was postponed due to claims the trial was being conducted by a biased Chair. One of the Panel members, selected under the rules set out in the Regulations, was in fact somebody who had himself spoken out against the student protests on Radio. This lucky student had a legal team but it begs the question whether this potential bias would have come to light if it had not been for the legal team bringing this to the attention of the Panel? Would this point have been ignored had the student tried to argue it? I have seen numerous students being dealt this card.
“People organising or conducting these hearings are not legally trained and are unaware of the potential bias”
Matters relating to the case are often discussed amongst the Panel members and the university staff members charged with bringing the case against the student on behalf of the university. To get an idea of how prejudicial and wrong this is, it would be like the Judge talking to the CPS about the case, evidence and parties involved, before a trial. Evidence of non-related conduct are brought to Panel members’ attention, either through informal discussions between staff and Panel members (let’s not forget they are likely to be friends as well as colleagues,
socialising together, crossing paths in corridors and dinner parties), or by way of evidence not even first disclosed to the student, giving the student no opportunity to rebut or address the evidence prior to the Hearing. People organising or conducting these hearings are not legally trained and are unaware of the potential bias and the harm this bias can do to a case. Often by the time the client has arrived in my office they have been through a gruelling process with the university, a process that can be littered with procedural irregularities. So what’s my advice? Look out for potential conflicts and bias and argue the point eloquently. If that fails, contact me. Bullying was a factor in Cpl. Marie Ellement’s suicide in October of 2011
Bullying: Don’t Be a Victim Georgina Turner A RECENT inquest into the death of Cpl Anne-Marie Ellement in October 2011 has found that rape and subsequent bullying from fellow soldiers were factors in her suicide. The inquest heard that she was “treated appallingly” and let down by the army. This tragic case is an extreme example of the vulnerability that is caused by bullying and highlights the real dangers that can stem from it. Bullying is an act that undermines and intimidates someone else and something that nobody should have to tolerate. If you feel that you are being bullied, a crucial step is talking about it. Kept a secret, our feelings towards it often become difficult to control and
rationalise. Find a friend or relative you can trust, or talk to your personal tutor. Sometimes the easiest people to talk to aren’t necessarily those closest to you and, in some cases it is easier to talk to someone you don’t know. Helplines such as Childline (0800 1111) and Samaritans (08457 90 90 90) are available 24hrs a day to help talk through any issues you have. Is it damp or is it mould? Sam Webb THE University Paper recently spoke to Sue Powell, who runs City rental services, a student lets provider with over 100 houses (50 of which let already). She states: “Here at City Rental Services, we usually find that this time of year can be when rented accommodation in Bristol is more susceptible to damp and mould.” This is a responsibility issue for all tenants – remember, your landlord does not live with you, and if you have signs of mould or damp in your rented property in Bristol, it’s your responsibility to contact your landlord about this. So, firstly it’s important to ascertain whether it is damp or mould. Your landlord should visit and assess what the contributory factors are and identify the causes. On the whole,
landlords are keen to respond to these issues and would firstly want to assess the fabric of the building to identify the causes of the mould, whether it be damp or condensation. In some cases of mould spore growth, this is directly attributable to internal issues such as: * Lack of ventilation in bathroom – does it need a mechanical vent fitting? * Trickle vents needed in UPVC windows? * Daily opening of curtains and/or blinds? * Consider how clothes get dried? It may be time to buy a condensing tumble dryer! If you do find mould this is how you can deal with it: * Eradicate mould thoroughly and effectively and quickly. * Use a dehumidifier until tile moisture levels drop to normal.

Bristol’s student property problems
paige williams BRISTOL’S property market is struggling due to the increase in students living in Bristol. At
the University of Bristol, student numbers have risen by 36% in just two years! 50,000 students are expected to be looking for accommodation in Bristol over
the next few years and redundant offices, the former ice rink, a police station and derelict old people’s flats have been earmarked as possible student pads.
domesticating your student flatmates JENNY SMITH ON moving out of halls and into a shared house, we all experience something of a honeymoon period where we’re all too willing to forgive a filthy kitchen. Give it a few weeks and this will be very much a thing of the past. It’s 08:48, there are no clean spoons and your sleeping housemate is telepathically receiving a torrent of abuse. In my house, once the novelty had well and truly worn off, we decided it was time to draw up a rota. Each person had a designated day by the end of which it was his or her responsibility to make sure the kitchen was clean and tidy. In theory, this was fool proof: in practice, nobody
Make sure you have a rota otherwise your kitchen may end up like this. Photo Credit: Katie Hicks read the rota. What transpired was the more domesticated of my housemates picking up the slack for those of us who were less inclined to do our washing up… It seems to me that the reality of sharing a house is that someone will always pull their weight more than others. The tricky bit is getting around the fact that these aren’t just housemates; these are friends that, if at all
possible, you’d like to keep. It seems obvious but the easiest way to avoid household chore-related arguments is to make sure you’re doing your bit. You may think you’re student enough to allow your home to deteriorate into chaos but when the essays hit, rest assured this will not be the case. Being a considerate housemate is so important, especially with friendships at stake, so tidy up after yourself as you go along (do what your mother always taught you!) and you’ll have yourself a happy house. Job tips: The Interview Sara sainsbury
S
Job Tip: Try not to turn up to your interview in a Tux!
inBRIEF Internships: The statistics MILKROUND offer us some interesting statistics on interships. - 36% of 2013 graduates who had completed an internship or holiday work with a grad employer received at least one job offer by March of their final year, compared to only 11% of graduates who did no work experience whilst at university. - 76% students and graduates would feel more confident about their career prospects if they had more work experience and internship opportunities. - 29% of UK employers say experience is critical when recruiting young people.
O, you’ve filled out 1000 online applications, you’ve spoken to every recruitment consultant from here to Land’s End, you’ve written more covering letters and emails than you can shake a stick at and now you’ve got it… finally… an interview. Let’s start with basics. Where is the interview and how do you get there? Check the date, time and location. Be on time. Do not, EVER, be late for an interview, you might as well not bother showing up at all. Don’t be ridiculously early either – anything more than 10 minutes early can make you look a little bit obsessive. Establish in advance what the interview format will be e.g. Q&A, competency based, one to one/group/panel and how many stages there are. Who are you meeting, what is their role? Research the company thoroughly. Look into their history, nature of business, USPs, competitors, success and values – all the information you need is just a Google search
Apply for a summer internship now! SUMMER may seem like a long way off yet, but don’t leave it until May to start looking for an internship. Many of the larger graduate recruiters are currently recruiting for their summer and yearlong industrial placement schemes, with deadlines for applications closing over the next few weeks, allowing them time to secure the best candidates and prepare for their arrival. If you’re looking to work with a smaller-scale business it is still worth contacting prospective employers early to see if they have anything coming up. It may be that they don’t have any finalised plans for an intern, but they get a large project come in and need an extra pair of hands, with your name top of the list to be contacted. Whether you are looking for a short-term placement
between university terms or to build your experience after graduation before looking for a full-time role, all experience is good experience. You may even be able to find a few shortterm placements that allow you to try out different roles and industries, identifying which best suit your skillset so you can start looking for that perfect graduate role. But the biggest advantage by far is that if you secure your summer placement now, you won’t have it hanging over you for the rest of the term. This allows you to concentrate on more important things like exams, coursework and enjoying the sunshine while everyone else is panicapplying for placements. Milkround offer an array of summer internships, if you are interested please visit www.milkround.com and search for summer internships.
‘do not try to express your personality through your wardrobe on this occasion’
away - and interviewers know that. If you don’t demonstrate a good knowledge of their business it’s insulting to them and lazy of you. Most interviews these days are competency based, meaning the employer has a set of core competencies that are required in all their jobs. You may be able to find out their specific competencies online or, you could just assume they will be along the lines of the generic e.g “team working” or “problem solving” etc. Be prepared with examples of when you displayed these traits. It’s a clichéd and dull interview question but the less creative interviewers amongst us could well ask “What are your weaknesses?” Do not at this point say “I’m too much of a perfectionist” unless you’re happy to receive a punch in the face – a metaphoric one. Know your weak points but also how
they can be improved with training and commitment. Dwell more on your strengths. Dress smartly and lose the facial piercings/flesh tunnels and hide all tattoos. Have normal hair – don’t overgel it/crimp it or decide to try out that crimson rinse the day before. In short, do not try to express your personality through your wardrobe on this occasion. Let the employer know you are a blank canvas - a smart, respectable, well groomed blank canvas. Relax, maintain eye contact, have a firm handshake, be positive and enthusiastic, keep to the point and listen. Have some relevant questions prepared NOT “what time is lunch?” but more along the lines of “what are the company’s plans for expansion”, “what’s been your progression at XXX” or “I’ve read your blog on blah blah blah - what led you to write it”? Finally, remember this is a two way process. You need to be completely
comfortable with what they are describing in terms of the role, the company and the opportunity. It’s your life and your choice. There is a chance that you’ll be offered a job but you decide it’s not the one for you. That’s fine, don’t be pressurised by anyone whether it be friends, parents or the company themselves into accepting something that doesn’t feel right for you. Just identify what you didn’t like, change the focus of your search and commence the hunt for your new opportunity with renewed vigour. Sara Sainsbury is Group Talent Director for RSG Plc. Personal trainer, Liam Dadds, shows us the truth behind building muscle
The real evidence on muscle growth Liam dadds
B
uilding some real muscle seems to be illusive for most. After many hours of pouring over indepth research, scientific papers and my own experience here is what I have found to be the key scientific points with regards to building muscle. Gym trained individuals may allow rest periods of up to three weeks between training bouts without fear of losing muscle. These rest periods have been shown to contribute more to muscle growth than training continuously without rest does; remember that muscle is built when the body rests
“Rest periods longer than two minutes appear unnecessary and recovers. Research suggests that exercises performed without a full range of motion (ROM) may be just as effective as exercises performed with a full ROM (providing that exercises are performed correctly with appropriate contractions and time under tension). No specific type of muscle contraction appears to directly influence growth although a combination of all is recommended for
best results. Concentric contraction: (the lifting phase), eccentric contraction: (the lowering phase) and isometric contraction: (when the muscle is held in a fixed position with resistance against it). Endurance training may not assist gains during resistance training although high intensity cycling may increase muscular growth in the lower body. Despite many suggestions
made towards how long rest periods in-between sets should be, they appear irrelevant to muscle growth, although periods longer than two minutes appear unnecessary. Weight/load is potentially irrelevant due to the fact muscle is built as a result of being taken to momentary muscular failure (MMF) during sets. This suggests that any repetition range or weight will contribute to
muscle growth providing the set is taken to MMF. Additionally, single set exercises appear to attain similar results to multiple set exercises. All exercises should be performed with a load and tempo where muscular tension can be maintained on the specific muscle being worked at all times. Interview with an Olympic skater The UP met with Olympic short track speed skater, Jack Whelbourne Daniel Robbins
A
HEAD of the World Championships, Jack Whelbourne had some time to answer questions for The University Paper on all things speed skating. How did you first get into the sport? I did rugby from the age of two as my dad was all about rugby and, I played for Paviors until I was ten. However, when I was six my sister had a friend who was speed skating and she went along to see what it was like. From there she came back, told my parents that she thought I would like it and the rest is history. How was the experience of going to the Sochi 2014 Games, your second Olympics? The Olympic Park in Russia was amazing as all the arenas were close to each other and you could walk to every single venue. However, Vancouver did top it in my opinion as it was already an established Winter Olympics city and outside the village everything was normal. What, in your opinion, are the best and worst
‘I walked back through the holiday park in just my boxers and shirt’
parts of the sport? The worst part of the sport has to be the injuries. It is a sport of chance most of the time and most factors are out of your control and you can crash at any time. The best feeling is finishing races knowing you have overcome those worries and being able to stand back and say “I have done everything right in that race”. What would you rank as your best achievement in the sport? That is a hard one as I have many good memories. I made history at Vancouver when I was the first male GB skater to reach an ‘A’ final in the 1,500m. However, when I was a World Record Holder for some time with the relay team has to be the most special. It is very rare that in a small team you can get four athletes on the same page performing at that high level. What is your funniest story whilst you have been on your travels?
Glory: Jack Whelbourne (left) and Richard Shoebridge were both previously World Record Holders. Source: Michael Poole
The last time I was in Sochi was for an Olympic test event where we got to skate in the same arena. Anyway, I went on a walk to the beach and I was walking under some train tracks. I didn’t realise there was an open grate which I duly fell down, got covered in sewage and had to take off my trousers, socks and shoes as they were ruined. This all meant I walked back through the holiday park in just my boxers and shirt! Very embarrassing! UWE’s Basketball Success about the club’s growth over the last three years: Two seasons ago we sat mid table in the Western 2A, last season we were Western 2A champions (with 9 wins and 1 loss) and cup semi-finalists and this season we are Western 1A Champions (with 10 wins and no losses!) and cup quarter-finalists. THE UWE Basketball club The brand name, logo, captain, Steve Devereux, Facebook page, Youtube tells The University Paper channel and Twitter
account were all created last season and we have put a huge amount of effort into giving the club a brand presence. In March and April we have playoffs to make it to BUCS Premier against Middlesex and University of East London. UEL are extremely well-funded and have many scholar athletes so it will be very tough, but to even get to this stage is a great achievement.

UoB’s Varsity Hockey success Alice webb The 1’s game was fairly uneventful ending in a 4-0 win for UoB. With the new boom box in full swing, UoB kept possession in UWE’s half but no goals were scored for the first 15 minutes. However, a goal by UoB’s Kirsty Crampton-Smith got things going and by the end of the first half, UoB were 3-0 up with two more goals from Georgie Killingbeck and Emma Bevan. Despite the entirety of the second half being spent in UWE’s D, only one more goal came from Lucy McKee to leave the final score 4-0. Man of the Match

went to Rhian Richardson. In the 2’s game, the first 15 minutes saw UoB struggle to convert but by half time they were 2-0 up. They reached 8-0 with 10 minutes to go so this was obviously a good time to send the keeper up front, right? Wrong! A spectacular (yet disgraceful) tackle and take-down saw Katie Butler with a yellow card and UWE with a keeperless penalty flick. UoB’s willing forward, Georgia Curtis, could not save the shot but with 30 seconds left on the clock, UoB scored another and secured a 9-1 victory over UWE. www.unipaper.co.uk
back in the second set to win 25-15. The game went into a deciding third set which Bristol secured with a score of 15-12. Men UoB secured the Varsity point for Volleyball after their men defeated UWE in three sets. UWE raced to a first set win, taking the lead with a score of 25-11. UoB forced the third set after winning a close second set 17-25. The third set continued in the same tight vain but Bristol took the set with a score of 15-11.

steve hood Women Since their formation in September UWE’s Women took on UoB in their first varsity appearance. UWE took the lead early
on but the experience of the UoB girls was evident as they took their time in attack to create the best opportunities and eventually ran out 10-6 winners.
Men UWE’s Men went into this game open minded as they took on
last year’s BUCS champions. UoB took the lead early on and didn’t relinquish it for the entire game. UWE battled back to make it the closest scoring game in recent history but UoB’s superior strength shone through as they won the game 8-4. It’s that time of year again – Rugby Varsity Day. The boots have been cleaned, the gum shields are on standby and the gloves are officially off! Henry Conchie, captain of UoB, told The University Paper: ‘All the boys at Bristol are optimistic for a big victory to top off a successful season for us. Performing well in the BUCS premiership, we have just been getting better and better, and there is a great team atmosphere at the moment.’ He continues: ‘I know that the boys are going to be champing on the bit to prove themselves
and will not be lacking any inspiration.’ A squad member from UWE doesn’t seem to agree and told us: ‘I’m absolutely buzzing about the game and also the well-deserved drink I am going to enjoy after we thrash Bristol!’ David Massey, captain of UWE, added: “I’m very optimistic for a win as we have a strong squad this year and the event always brings out the best in players.” Whether you’re behind #TeamUWE or #MightyMaroon, make sure you’re at The Memorial Stadium on 31st March. Doors open at 5pm but the rivalry has been there for years.
FOR the 2nds, varsity was the 3rd meet of the year, after two UWE defeats so expectations were in favour of a UoB win. However, at the end of the first half it was a very close 2-1 to UoB. But after putting on a couple of their 1st team players, the score quickly went in favour of UoB 2nds and they won 8-1. As UoB’s 1st team is in the top ten in the country UWE thought they’d be lucky to get a point on the score sheet. UWE gave UoB a great game and although UoB squeezed in three goals right at the end, before that it was a very good game which finished with a score of 19-10 to UoB.
PAIGE WILLIAMS Lacrosse (Women & Mixed) UoB’s Women’s team kicked off the day with a phenomenal defeat of 29-0 over UWE. The Mixed game, a first at the Lacrosse Varsity, also followed suit with UoB winning 4-1, after a well-fought match by UWE. These wins provided UoB with another successful Varsity year and continued their winning streak over UWE at the event.
Cricket Dan Brown UWE won both the 1st and 2nd matches quite comprehensively in the indoor cricket varsity. The UoB 2nd team struggled to 71 in their 10 overs which UWE knocked off comfortably in 8 overs, and the 1st team stumbled to even less before being beaten by a greater margin. It wasn’t a great day at for UoB who were seriously understrength due to commitments to other university sports. UWE triumphed and UoB can only hope to redeem themselves when they play in the outdoor varsity games in June.

Badminton (Men) The men’s doubles was a very close match from the beginning with five out of the eight games going to three sets. UoB’s 1st doubles pair, Adrian Sim and Gordon So, won both matches, the first 21-17, 21-13 and the second in three sets, 21-18, 18-21 and 21-17. UoB’s 2nd doubles pair won one match in a very close game and UWE won the second match in another narrow game. UWE’s 2nd singles player won both matches and UoB’s first singles player, won his first match in a close game, 21-15, 15-21, 21-15 meaning it was all to play for in the final game. The score was 4-3 to UoB who needed to win this match to secure a win, if not; the result would be decided on the number of sets won. It was again another very equal game, and went to three sets. UWE won the third set so the final
VARSITY series 2014 served up a shock as UoB avenged last year’s crushing 72-0 defeat, beating UWE Titans 26-22. UWE started the game against the wind and going uphill after winning the toss. However, it was UoB that started the quickest, claiming the first try despite a spirited effort from the UWE defence. However, UWE bounced back with the oddest of trys with Bristol’s defence failing to deal with the kick off. Archie Dalton pounced upon the loose ball to score. After battling it out UoB eventually came out on top, scoring the winning points ten minutes before the end. The best moment of the match, however, came from the UWE team when Captain Chris Blythe stepped his defender well inside his own half and sprinted in past the UoB full back.
Rugby Union Andrew rusher UOB’S 3rd XV began with intent, looking dangerous out wide and with ball in hand. Their sustained attack went unrewarded however and the opposing UWE team built up numerous phases. UoB’s defence could not withstand an organised pack that went over to put the visitors 5 nil up. UoB reacted with promise off the restart and played intelligently to set up good attacking platforms in the opposition 22. Their efforts were converted when a slick backs move resulted in Alex Lyne putting UoB ahead within minutes. Throughout the remainder of the game both teams played threatening rugby and were aggressive in defence, resulting in real stalemate. It wasn’t until the final minutes that UWE built up further pressure and went over for another score. With UoB loosing, they placed their efforts in going for the win but unfortunately a further UWE penalty sealed the game. UWE won 15-7.

Men’s Tennis UoB took the initiative after a nail biting first doubles match, which was decided by a tense 3rd set tie break. From that point on, Bristol extended their advantage, convincingly winning the next five matches to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Despite some tough resistance from UWE in the second half of matches, Bristol proved too strong and stormed away to an overall 12-0 victory.
Women’s Tennis The day got off to a tense start with another tight doubles match between both top two seeds. The match was decided by a difference of two points and swung in Bristol’s favour. A number of close doubles and singles matches followed, also decided by mere games and points in which UWE gained a win. However once again Bristol proved their dominance and stormed off to an overall 11-1 win. www.unipaper.co.uk, @unipaperBristol.
score was tied at 4-4. UWE, however had won 11 sets, whilst UoB had won 10, so UWE won the match overall The men’s second match faced time constraints so one doubles match was left at one set all, a draw. Two singles games were also forfeited by both teams. UoB’s 1st doubles pair won one of their games 21-16, 21-14. In the other doubles game, UWE won, and the other ended in a tie. The singles were both long and tough matches, but UWE managed a narrow victory in both of them. UWE’s 1st singles player won 21-19, 16-21, 21-17 and their second singles player won 22-20, 15-21, 25-23. Overall, UWE won 4-1 it what was an extremely close match. Badminton (Women) The UoB women’s team started with an advantage as UWE did not field a full team, so they started with four games ahead. The first doubles game was very close, with every point being intensely
fought for. UoB won the first set 22-20, but UWE won the second two sets, 21-19 and 21-18 and won that game overall, despite the score line being very close. UWE provided strong opposition to the UoB side in the singles games and won both of the singles matches. The final game, the doubles, saw UoB’s 1st doubles pair, Felicity Boyce and Piya Sachdeva secure a resounding win, 21-11 and 21-9, so that the UoB ladies’ team won the match 5-3 overall. Badminton (Social) The social teams played four men’s matches, one ladies match and two mixed matches. The men from UWE were very strong and won all four of the men’s matches. UoB won the women’s social match but overall UWE won five games to two. Overall, UWE won 3-1. There were some fantastic games that were really close and both universities performed really well.

UWE managed to retain their title, following their first Varsity win in 2013. Although UoB were tough opponents with strong performances throughout the evening, UWE took 3 out of the 4 titles available with a total medal tally of 8 compared to UoB’s
4. However, UoB’s Suzie McKee, hot off the heels of her success in Cardiff, gave a beautiful routine to clinch gold in her category. But UWE’s team members gave strong performances and achieved a clear win, beating UoB 34-26.

Varsity: The fight for Futsal Jonny Winterburn
UoB 2nds 6-1 UWE 2nds The game started off with UoB firmly in control, keeping possession and in complete control of the play. UoB managed to score after the 5 minute mark, but were unable to convert their superiority into a bigger lead and a number of times were caught out on the counter after overcommitting players. UWE were, however, unable to make the most of these opportunities, with their shots both saved and failing to hit the target. UoB took advantage of UWE’s wayward finishing by grabbing a goal before half time then extending the lead further in the second half with 4 unanswered goals, the pick of the bunch being Eddie Pezzulli’s finish into the top right corner and a Ryan Baynes finish after good
link up play with Luke Thurley. The clean sheet wasn’t to be for UoB after a mix up in defence allowed UWE to steal in and poke the ball into the bottom corner as the final whistle sounded.
UoB 1sts 10-1 UWE 1sts This was the first varsity meeting for the 1st teams. After a vicious opening, where UWE conceded 3 fouls in the opening 2 minutes, the game settled down and was locked in a stalemate until UoB captain, Faris El Mahgiub, produced a bit of skill to leave the UWE keeper on the floor and a tap in into an empty net. UWE’s threat came from strong running from deep and long shots and they managed to equalise after a thunderous shot from a corner. This turned out to be their last significant attack as UoB
Varsity
began to rise to the occasion, dominate possession and stifle UWE’s attacks, with their movement creating space and shooting opportunities on regular occasions. UoB bagged 3 more goals before half time to lead 4-1 at the break. In the second half, UoB further dictated the pace of the game with Mena Nidam continually finding neat flicks and passes to unlock the UWE defence, creating a number of goal scoring opportunities before grabbing one of the 6 UoB goals in the second half, turning his defender and finishing into the bottom corner from distance. The freedom of movement and interchange between UoB players caused UWE endless problems and left them visibly exhausted at the final whistle. www.unipaper.co.uk.
Netball UWE’s 1st and 2nd team triumphed over UoB with a score of 37-33 and 42-40 respectively. The 3rd’s game resulted in a draw after a stronglyfought match by both teams. UoB managed victories in the 4th’s game with a massive win of 46-13 and also in the 5th’s with a final score of 38-6.
Squash paige williams UWE’s Squash star, Lucas Serme, gained a massive win for his 1st team with 5-0 on the scoreboard at the end of a tough game for UoB. UWE’s 2nd team also won with a score of 3-2, although UoB’s Rebecca Quiney played in the Men’s game and won 3-2! UWE were also victorious in the 3rd’s game, winning 4-1 but UoB did manage a win in the 4th’s game, beating UWE 4-1.
UWE: Basketball Champions steve hood Women UoB started off stronger in this close fought contest but it was the superior shooting from range that secured the victory for UWE’s ladies. Hitting seven shots from beyond the arc within quick
succession was too much for the UoB’s defense to handle. UoB did bring the game back within one point with a superb buzzer beating three-pointer at the end of the third quarter, however UWE didn’t relinquish the lead for the final quarter and ran out 77-80 winners. www.unipaper.co.uk
Men: UWE came flying out of the blocks in the final fixture of the day and opened up a 13-point lead at the halfway point. UoB rallied in the third quarter to close the deficit to seven points. The home side continued this momentum shift into the final quarter to ensure a nervy finish however, UWE were able to take the game 72-76.
