UWE Maths student, 20-year-old George Middleton, has been jailed for two years and given sixty hours of community service after police found £500 worth of ecstasy in his home in Horfield. Described as a “normal student” by those close to him, Mr Middleton became increasingly withdrawn over this year as his drug habits developed. “He used to go out a bit to Motion and festivals so he was quite outgoing” said a friend of the student. “Just slowly over the last year he became more quiet and stopped coming out.” The friend also added that he “isn’t
what you would expect from a drug dealer. He is a good guy and he seemed like he had his head screwed on.” Mr Middleton pleaded guilty to possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply (MDMA) and possession of Class A (mushrooms) and Class B (cannabis) drugs. Police became suspicious and issued a warrant to search his house after the smell of cannabis was found to be emitting from his residence. The student’s lawyer has claimed that Mr Middleton suffered from social anxieties and took drugs in an attempt to “socialise with his peer group”.

THE UNIVERSITY of the West of England’s social scene is known for the relatively heavy presence of party drugs such as MDMA and ketamine, with many students heading to nights out at some of its most popular venues, such as Motion, purchasing a small supply beforehand. Mr Middleton’s lawyer claims that the student started dealing to keep up with his friends and to fund his own habit. When questioned by the police over the £500 worth of ecstasy, Mr Middleton admitted to planning to sell half of it and keep the other half for his own use. The 20-year-old increasingly spent more time alone over the last year as his drug habit worsened. He withdrew from his friendship group and would

mostly stay in to drugs by himself, becoming quiet when he had previously been outgoing. The judge presiding over the trial told the student: “It is little short of a tragedy this happened at this stage of your life.” Many may see Mr Middleton as a victim of the pressure to fit in with your peer group, whilst others may see him as a warning against the dangers of becoming too heavily involved with drugs whilst at University. The Maths student must now await the University’s decision over whether or not they let him finish his degree, before starting his sentence in 2016. Hi, I am contacting you regarding your competition to win Love Saves The Day tickets. I have written a poem to summarise the observations of your contributor, Michael Quinn, in the article ‘Wessex Red Rage’ in the April edition of your paper. His sentiments, I believe, are shared by many students around Bristol, including myself. Here is my summary of the article in 20 words: My life has a bane, Being left in the rain, By an empty red bus, For no discernible aim. Nonplussed. Whilst this is not my best work, I feel I have a talent, whether real or imagined, for writing quick irreverent poems. If you ever think that your paper would benefit from a short, maybe humorous poem summarising an article in your paper in each edition, please contact me as I would be more than happy to volunteer to contribute where I can. I look forward to hearing from you, Josh Delaney
Paige williams University is nearly over for the year (insert fanfare here) and that means that summer is fast-approaching! We are only a few weeks away from late night bonfires on the beach, picnics in the park and other such clichéd summertime activities. However, for final year students, this summer also signals the last chapter of your university days before you join the illusive ‘real world’, where apparently people wear suits and don’t get drunk on weeknights. I know - I don’t get it either. Regardless, The University Paper wishes you the best of luck out there and is not at all jealous of your escape from the student staple diet of Super Noodles, tins of beans and internal debates about whether or not to eat that potato that has started sprouting roots… For first year students, it’s a different story. Savour this summer, freshers, because when you return next year you will not only fall, but nosedive, out of ‘40 heaven’ and crash straight into the realisation that you actually have to attend lectures to obtain a degree classification that doesn’t share its name with a South African bishop! And as for the second year students - the awkward middle child of campus is growing up and I hope you enjoy the sunny break before your very final year of deadlines and stress eating! I would like to thank all of you for reading The University Paper and hope you enjoy this year’s final issue!

of large procurement projects and supply chain management.” Despite this statement from UWE, students still decided to protest and in an open letter to UWE’s governing body on 2nd April 2014 they stated there was “widespread hostility, threats and attacks from DPRTE participants, UWE security, UWE staff including top management, and the police, on protestors”. Although the police reported that the protest was peaceful, UWE’s community police officer, PC Mark Brain, arrested a protester, claiming assault. However, the charge was later dropped. One protestor was also assaulted by a DPRTE participant who caused him a bleeding injury, whilst one more had their foot run over by another conference goer’s car.

TUDENTS at UWE are demanding an independent review into the university’s handling of protestors of the Defence Procurement, Research, Technology & Exportability conference 2013. Students protested outside of the conference, which they have dubbed the ‘UWE arms fair’, on 20th November 2013, because they disagree with UWE’s renting out of the Exhibition and Conference Centre for the event, calling it “irresponsible”. However, Keith Hicks, UWE’s head of Marketing and Communications, commented: “It is our policy not to support arms fairs. This is not an arms fair. This is a conference that promotes project management

Protestors have also stated: “Steve West [Vice-Chancellor of UWE] was seen in person at the protest site, near the ECC, acting against the protests by intimidating protestors with arrest, and then chasing up policemen to carry out his threats.” The protestors concluded: “UWE security and police prioritised the military business fair over our safety and freedom of expression” and “this is not just about one event, it is about maintaining the solidarity of students, staff and people all over the country and the world in the face of corporate greed.” UWE have confirmed that they have received the open letter dated 2nd April 2014 but there has not yet been news of an independent review. www.unipaper.co.uk

CURRENT undergraduates will still be repaying student loans into their 40s and early 50s, according to a report published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and the Sutton Trust in April. The study assessed the impact of the 2012 student loan system that was introduced at the same time as higher tuition fees of up to £9,000. It found that an aboveinflation interest rate on student loans means that around 45% of graduates will pay back more than they borrowed. The combination of this interest rate system and trebled fees means that a typical student will now repay a total of £66,897, the study estimates.
Higher earners will pay back more The report, which was called “Payback Time”, stated that those graduates whose salaries rarely go above £21,000 will pay back less under the new regime whereas those on higher salaries will pay back substantially more.
A loss for the government? Researchers also found that the vast majority of students will never pay back their loan in full. It is estimated that 73% of students will have some debt written off compared to around 32% in the old system.

WE student, Maria Korotaeva, was forced to hide in a car while her millionaire boyfriend was killed. Andrew Bush, a gold trader originally from Bristol, was celebrating their five-month anniversary with the 20-year-old in Spain’s Costa del Sol when the incident happened. Miss Korotaeva said she was drinking champagne when she realised someone else was in the house and subsequently ran to the car, waiting for her 48-year-old lover to sort it out. After hearing gun shots, Miss Korotaeva, originally from Russia, desperately tried to get back into the five bedroom villa, but struggled to get past the complex security system and locks on the doors. To make matters worse, Miss

Korotaeva’s phone had gone dead and she therefore had to find an outside plug for her charger before she could call emergency services. However, as the police and fire services struggled to find the villa, Miss Korotaeva was forced to walk up to the main road to look for help. It took the emergency services around three hours to arrive and break into the luxury property where they found the body of Mr Bush in a pool of his own blood. Maria Korotaeva, also known as Marsha, was in her final year of a Business and Human Resources degree at UWE and was planning to make a life with Mr Bush after she had finished her final exams. The 20-year-old, who splits her time between Bristol and her home in Spain, has clearly been traumatized by the death
of her boyfriend: “There’s no way of putting into words how you feel when somebody you love is killed. I feel dreadful right now. We had so many plans for the future and now there’s nothing”. According to Miss Korotaeva, Mr Bush wanted to turn back on his way to the airport because he’d forgotten his keys to the villa, but she persuaded him to get the flight and pick up a new set in Spain: “I wish I’d never said it, I wish we’d missed the flight”. Mayka Kukocova has been accused of the murder and has appeared in court for the first time. The 24-year-old Slovakian model is an ex-girlfriend of Mr Bush. Mr Bush owned Andrew Davids Jewellers, now called Goldtrader, a pawn shop, a tanning and waxing shop and a limo hire firm.

Bristol academics’ marking boycott gains student support
I
megan davies
T WILL not have gone unnoticed by any student that over the last few months, several full and partday strikes have been carried out by university staff over their pay and conditions. The protest has escalated more recently, however, with the threat of a marking boycott. The boycott was originally set to begin on 28th April, but has been pushed back to the 6th May, following an offer of a 2% pay increase for UK higher education staff made by the UCEA (Universi-
ties’ and Colleges’ Employers Association). Since 2009, pay for academic staff has fallen by 13% in real terms and, furthermore, members of the UCU (The University and College Union) currently earn less than academic staff in most English-speaking countries such as the USA, Australia and Canada. Discussions at UCU meetings, however, have shown that this strike is not just about low pay; it is about protecting the quality of teaching and research at the university. Controversy arose when
Guy Gregory, the University’s HR Director, sent an email to all members of staff stating that any member of staff taking part in the boycott will have 100% of their pay cut – even those members of staff who are still doing the rest of their work. Several members of staff have questioned the legality of his statement and are concerned that this could be a breach of their employment contract. Bristol staff insist that they do still plan to mark work, but will just withhold the marks until the university sits down
and discusses options with the UCU. Despite the disruption, students at UoB seem to be growing increasingly supportive of the strike. I n a meeting in February, the University of Bristol Union voted in support of industrial action and have subsequently organised various meetings and recent demonstrations have seen a substantial student presence. Nappy-wearing teens are blamed on working parents Lucy rogers
A
study published this month has revealed that children up to the age of fifteen are still wearing nappies to secondary school. The National Foundation for Educational Research exposed that 9% of head teachers and senior staff members had dealt with at least one child over the age of five wearing a nappy to school in the past year. The investigation involved 602 primary and 561 secondary school teachers and only included children without developmental or medical conditions. Whilst slow development in children is often attributed to a low-standard of living, Sky News analysts suggest that working parents are to blame. An increase in parents
working full time has led to busier lifestyles than in previous decades, leaving little time to equip children with fundamental life skills. Perhaps understandably, many people have met the news with shock, with many parents disputing the findings. One working mother commented that “being a stay-at-home parent doesn’t necessarily make a better parent”. The commenter on Sky News stated that: “Children who worked harder and performed better were actually those who had working parents” as they have a “stronger work ethic that gets ingrained into the children”. The general reaction to this news, however, is one of disgust and disbelief. Other comments claim the findings are “an absolute disgrace” and
many share the belief that teachers should “report parents to the authorities to take action against them”. It is against this backdrop that the role of teachers is being brought into question. Whilst there is an expectation that primary educators will care for and develop the lifeskills of five-year olds, secondary-school teachers are meant to do just that – teach. After a series of strikes from teachers over pay and working conditions, the profession is once again being challenged by the need – or expectation – for them to be acting parents. With stricter regulations on physical contact between teachers and children, owing in part to sex abuse scandals, it is harder than ever for educators to judge the line between carer and teacher.

A second skeleton is emerging on top of Seanie’s original one. This ‘Stone Man Syndrome’, as it has been coined, is currently Seanie and her family untreatable - painkillers being

The peculiarity of the condition, which is currently only affecting 600 people worldwide, means that once the second skeleton spreads to the lower half of Seanie’s body, she will have to make a lifechanging decision about the physical position she will have to remain in for the rest of her life.

Spotted: Aliens on Earth Josie Finlay A “STRANGE object” floating in the sky over North London this week has provoked fresh speculation over the existence of UFOs. Footage of a black object, spotted by an unnamed Highbury and Islington dweller, was posted to the ‘Mixtris UFO-Images’ Facebook page on 28th April. At first easily mistaken for a bird, the object then appears to rotate as it floats along, and seems to emit a beam of light. This is not the only recent UK sighting: earlier in the month, a schoolgirl uploaded a photo of a mysterious ring-shaped object she spotted floating above her house in Leamington Spa. However, enthusiasticallypunctuated Youtube video, ‘Ring Shaped UFO over Leamington Spa, DEBUNKED!!!’, explains that the object was a smoke machine made for Nevada’s Burning Man festival. The thought that UFOs might exist is at once comforting – that there might be other life beside us – and haunting. Speculation awakens the imagination and proves a form of escapism. However, even for the cynics among us, sightings are still an exciting concept. The fact that part of the Burning Man Festival meandered to central Warwickshire of its own accord is enough to brighten my day, even if Nevada isn’t exactly Mars.

I BLIZZARD! How’s life been treating you and what have you been up to? Hi there, first of all I just want to say thank you for taking the time out to interview me, I really appreciate it. I’ve been good, just promoting my new album “Testing The Water”! Your first mix-tape, Sooner Than Never, hit the top 30 on the album chart. What was the feedback like? It was really good! I mean at the time I was only 17 anyway, so it just made me think that if I can do this now,
what will I be doing in 10 years? You’ve just released your debut album “Testing the water.” What was the reception like? The reception has been amazing! I’ve tried to incorporate lots of different styles. Something must’ve worked because the album reached the top 30! You’re well known for being a battle rapper and you’ve featured on “Don’t Flop” as well as “Lord of the Mics.” Which was more challenging and why? Definitely Lord of the Mics. the Mics, it’s quite a stagnant atmosphere so you have no way of knowing how well you’re doing. Who are your musical inspirations? Who do you look up to? My music taste is very eclectic. It goes from Eminem and Jay-Z, to Dizzee Rascal and Kano, all the way to
Morrisey, The Sex Pistols and David Bowie. My main influence though would be Thom Yorke from Radiohead. Which up-and-coming artists do you listen to and who would you recommend to our readers? I’d have to say Brotherhood is the one to watch out for.
There was a time where Brotherhood, Maxta and myself were all in the top 10 UKG chart at the same time. It’s a bit counter-productive to look at other artists too much because I kind of feel like my career is more important, you know? Finally, a horde of grime fans are on artist’s backs
telling them to “stick to grime”. What would you say to those people? I’d tell them to let the artist breathe and find themself. If you’re a true fan you’ll support them regardless. Blizzard – Testing The Water is available on iTunes now.

But the bigger the crowd, the bigger the atmosphere and, well, we will just get better and better so hopefully these shows will be off the chart! How much do both McFly and Busted mean to the band? We’ve grown up with them and we all loved the pure energy of Busted! Those
‘Our music has been described as the perfect crossover rock’ EofE (above) are supporting ‘superband’ McBusted during their UK tour this summer guys killed it and looked like they were having so much fun in their videos. McFly are awesome. From the opening riff of ‘Five Colours In Her Hair’, we were hooked – incredible song writers. Which venue are you looking forward to playing most? That’s a real tough one as we are psyched to be playing them all – but I guess if we had to pick three it would be Birmingham LG arena, as it’s mine, Luke and Tom’s hometown; Newcastle for Nicky’s hometown and then of course the O2 in London. It’s THE venue! How would you describe your music? Our music has been described as the perfect crossover rock – we try and attract a whole diverse audience. I think that because we have various influences we bring a wide range of elements to each track. There’s a lot of rock, a bit of pop, a hint of blues and twist of RnB – so hopefully something for everyone. Why did you decide to form the band a year ago and what would you be doing if you weren’t doing this? There had been many band line-ups with me and Luke in school and outside that didn’t really
go anywhere. Tom was in a band with some friends from his school and I met Tom through our girlfriends. I ended up jamming with Tom’s band and even played bass when Tom’s band needed a bass player. After this, Tom and I started jamming and ‘Audio Disease’ was formed, and Luke joined after 5 months. During mid-2013 me, Tom and Luke decided to go full time and formed EofE, which led to us trialling a couple of drummers until we found Nicky and EofE were complete. Are you looking to emulate McBusted in their success and what do you hope will come from this opportunity? Absolutely they are respected and very successful and we would be happy to follow in their footsteps. We want to utilise this tour to get our music out there and show the UK what we can do. It’s a massive opportunity to build our fan base and we’ll be giving it our all. McBusted will be playing on Weston-Super-Mare beach on the 28th of June along with The Backstreet Boys, Scouting for Girls, FIVE and Diversity. They will also be playing at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on the 6th and 7th of May.

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery is now home to art exhibition ‘English Magic’ by Jeremy Deller. The UP goes to find out more... Paige Williams

RISTOL Museum & Art Gallery is now home to an exhibition by Turner Prize winning artist, Jeremy Deller. English Magic, which was featured at the Venice Biennale 2013 (which is quite a big deal in the art world), features artwork by soldiers who served in Iraq, a rather enraged harrier hen, Roman Abramovich’s yacht and an interesting video of owls and crushed cars complete with steel drum soundtrack. Oh, and you can also add David Bowie to the mix as well. This is the first time the exhibition is touring the UK and Bristol is only one of three
venues to host the show. The award-winning artist said: “It’s fantastic that the show is going to Bristol and it’s been great to use the museum collection to augment the original exhibition and give it a new, local edge.” The “local edge” is achieved by Deller’s use of pieces from Bristol’s own collections such as the Bristol Riots of 1831 by William James Muller and a handpicked taxidermy display, which help enhance what some critics have called an “uncomfortably truthful, state-of-the-nation” show. Even if you’re not a big art buff, the free exhibition is well worth a wander around and runs until 21st September. www.unipaper.co.uk

NEED something to pass time now that exams are over? You can never go wrong with a movie. Bad Neighbours: A battle between Frat boys and new parents, this movie is promising to be comedy for days. Starring Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne the movie will be released on 3rd May.
A Good Day For Cyclists: One of Deller’s pieces featured in the ‘English Magic’ exhibition.
Staying old school After being such a big part of student life for so many years The University Paper finds out how 20th Century Flicks manages to fend off the online threat Megan Davies
2
0th Century Flicks is an independent video shop in Clifton which also doubles up as a cinema. We got chatting to one of the owners, Dave Taylor. Why do you think 20th Century Flicks has stayed open whilst other video shops have closed due to the rise of LoveFilm etc.? It helps that it’s owned and run by the people you see in the shop. We also have quite an unusual policy of never throwing films out. People come to us because they know we’ve probably got what they’re after. Why is it better to rent a film from a shop rather than download it from the Internet?
There’s an element of there being something physical. If you download a film off the Internet, you just consume it and then it’s gone. If you’ve gone to a video shop, looked at the covers, made a decision, paid for it, I think you enjoy it more. Tell us about the “Flicks Kino”. We got sick of watching films on laptops. Scale is such an important thing – if you watch a movie on a tiny screen you aren’t really getting that experience. But cinemas are ridiculously expensive, so we thought we’d make our own. If you could recommend one film to our readers what would it be? Dazed and Confused. For more interviews visit www.unipaper.co.uk.
How to Train Your Dragon 2: With family power on their side, the pair has to protect the peace of the ice cave that they found on one of their adventures. Set to be released on 4th July.
Maleficent: A twist to sleeping beauty, Disney has Angelina Jolie acting as the bad witch as we see her story. Maleficent will be released on 28th May.

Festivals under £100 Michael quinn
T
HEY’RE muddy, they’re lots of fun, but yes, festivals can be pretty pricey. But if you know where to look, you can find festivals that offer a more intimate experience that doesn’t break the bank. Here are our top picks for festivals under £100 – that’s more than half the price of Glastonbury or Reading!
Gottwood When? 19th-22nd June Where? Anglesea, Wales How much? £75-£100 Who’s there? Calibre, Dj Die, Crazy P Soundsystem, Maribou State, Craig Richards, Tale Of Us. Heading into its 5th birthday, Gottwood is an electronic dance and arts festival, offering a multitude of small stages located around idyllic woodland. The festival prides itself on attention to detail and it boasts, among
other attractions, an everchanging graffiti wall and a hillside castle where knackered revellers can watch the sunrise. Expect a colourful and messy experience.
Farr Festival When? 18th-20th July Where? Hertfordshire How much? £85-£100 Who’s there? Mt Kimbie, D Bridge, The Skints, Bicep, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Harri Pepper. Also heading into its 5th year, Farr festival is another electronic woodland expedition which offers an extremely intimate festival experience. Located on the picturesque hills of Hertfordshire, it began as an event for just 600 people, but since then has grown to a leading boutique festival while still keeping true to its organic roots. Farr is still relatively unknown, so make sure you get down while the magic still lingers.
Farr Festival 2013 Brownstock When? 29th-31st August Where? Essex How much? £70-80 Who’s there? Dizze Rascal,
Razor light, DJ EZ, The Feeling, P Money, Zac Pajak. Steering away from the dance side of the spectrum, Brownstock is a festival
which is exclusively run by the Brown family and group of close friends. It prides itself on picking out up-andcoming, fresh indie talent and
also offers a wider spectrum of artistic mediums such as poetry, face painting, comedy and storytelling. www.unipaper.co.uk.

Statement necklaces Lauren lee
E
VERY girl knows that the key to complete an outfit is to accessorise, may it be a simple necklace or wearing a red belt to compliment that dress you’ve been dying to wear. Lucky for us, this year’s biggest accessories trend is most definitely the statement necklace - the chunkier and bolder, the better. The statement necklace was a very popular trend during London and Paris fashion week with big designers such as Fendi (who incorpotated feathers into their necklaces), Balenciaga and Lanvin. Many people struggle to use accessories and try to keep their outfit clean and simple - but this is a trend that is easy to incorporate
into your wardrobe, instantly change a plain, everyday outfit into something a bit more on trend. For example, think of an outfit made up of a plain white shirt with your favourite jeans - without a necklace, it’s very casual and somewhat thrown together. However, wear an amazing gold chain and it’s been upped to something with a little more ooft. Retailers Primark have an amazing selection of statement necklaces this season – ranging from tribal necklaces to heavily embellished chains. I think a tribal necklace screams holiday - the Aztec feel would be perfect teamed up with a black maxi/midi dress whilst you are enjoying your holidays.

RETROVILLE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY The iconic Tobacco Factory’s weekly market is joined on the first Sunday of every month by ‘Retroville’, with vintage clothing, jewellery and homeware on sale alongside the regular market offerings.
What’s more, Primark prides itself on its affordability - meaning it won’t hit the purse too hard if you purchase a few pieces. However, if you don’t mind splashing the cash,Topshop and Zara have a huge selection of necklaces to suit every outfit,

After browsing the internet, I came across a beautiful necklace from New Look. The necklace, which has a beautiful pastel pink roped chain teamed up with pink stones, is perfect for completing any pastel outfit or it can be teamed on a more casual outfit to set it bang on
trend. At £20, the necklace is a little bit steep but because of its versatility, I think it is well worth the investment. Don’t know where to start? Heavy gold chains can be easily worn with most everyday outfits. Dare to try something new!

Summer fashion essentials The UP finds your list of essential summer wear Olivia Petter
A
S TEMPERATURES are slowly rising and exam season morbidly looms ahead, there is no better way to procrastinate than by giving your wardrobe a summer makeover. We’ve collected a few of the best student budget friendly summer essentials to get you started. For the Girls The Dress: A patterned dress is always a summer wardrobe staple, and this one from Topshop will flatter all shapes and sizes while keeping your limbs cool as a cucumber given its loose fit. It’s good value for money too (especially for Topshop) at only £36. The Shorts: Don’t let bare leg anxiety get the best of you! Cast away your nylon tights and give your pins the air they deserve in these floral high-waisted beauties for £14.99 from New Look. For those who
‘Don’t let bare leg anxiety get the best of you this summer, cast away your nylon tights and give your pins the air they deserve’
are normally seen following the ‘all black everything’ idea, these shorts are the perfect way to embrace the summer spirit while maintaining your brooding tendencies. Pair them with a simple cropped t-shirt for a casual daytime look.
The Shoes: These may be a little over the student budget at a wallet crunching £50 from ASOS, but I can assure you they are worth it. Silver was one of the major players gracing the S/S 14 runways back in September and it really does go with everything. Plus, the slight platform will ensure maximum comfort for those long summer walks through The Downs. For the Guys The T- Shirt: They say real men wear pink - well in summer, they wear coral. At only £18 from Next, this casual and
comfortable t-shirt will keep you cool on your morning walk to lectures while giving your outfit that burst of summer colour. The Trunks: Let’s face it - summer means swimming, so a shiny new pair of swim trunks is always a great investment before you hit the beach. Unless you are channeling your inner Ace Ventura, avoid tiki patterns like the plague and try something slightly less obnoxious with these simple Breton inspired striped swim trunks for £12.99 from New Look. There’s nothing wrong with being a little nautical. The Shoes: Nothing beats a solid pair of plain espadrilles for the summer. New Look’s are only £8 so you don’t have to feel guilty if, by the end of the summer, they have lost their soles or they are sporting a few battle wounds from a stint at a festival. Summer fashion faux pas LUCY ROGERS
Socks with sandals...
WE’VE all been guilty of waking up in lectures to find we’ve got our t-shirt on back-to-front. However, there are certain fashion faux pas that not even a heavy night in Lounge can excuse. See-through leggings: Everybody loves a bargain but if you’re derriere is on display, then something needs to be
changed. Socks with Sandals: With the return of nineties style, the line between retro cool and old-school fool are more blurred than ever before. The jury is still out on the faux pas favourite of wearing socks with sandals. Approach with caution. Low-hanging Trousers: No, no, no! Buy yourself a belt and hoist em’ up.
For the Boys: This coral t-shirt is only £18 from Next and the trunks are £12.99 at New Look.

echnically, we shall be performing a reverse spatchcock, although technically I’m not sure that’s a term. Right, let’s keep this simple, you’ve either picked up a whole, slightly green looking chicken in the discount aisle, bought a budget bird (wilfully ignoring Whittingstall’s icy glare) or have availed yourself of a fine organic bird fed on love and rainbows. Whatever the case, you’re hungry and want it fast. Here’s how:
1 2
Get home and turn your oven on to maximum power.
Unwrap and de-string your chicken, take your biggest and least blunt knife and slice straight down through the middle of the breast along one side of the breast bone. Keep pushing with some force until your knife has cut through into the

Make your own chicken stock PUT the leftovers of a chicken into a pot, cover with water, bring to the boil and then simmer so it’s just bubbling for 2 hours minimum. You can add vegetables as you go; onion ends and root veg peelings are best. Onion skins will give your stock a natural, appealing brown colour. Once the flavour has been gleaned from the chicken, strain it into a fresh pan and taste your stock. If it is too watery, set it on the heat and boil it until it tastes good. If you are making Boxfor later Same day delivery supplies use, you can reduce the stock until it tastes strong and there is just enough liquid to fill an ice tray. The UP gets a first look at the new Shpock app that has just launched in the UK
New ‘Shpock’ app released Adam Stead
S
HPOCK or ‘shop from your pocket’ has now launched in the UK. The free app operates “like a car boot sale”, where items you want to buy or sell can be uploaded, paid for and collected. Since the items sort by the proximity of the seller, arranging pick-up for large items is very easy. The geographical sorting process is the key difference from the eBay alternative, presently the largest app for buying and selling. However, there are other features: Shpock does not charge commission. Also, it boasts an image-based browsing process, making the app most useful for leisure-shoppers.
It’s not for when shopping is a precision surgical strike, but for when shopping is a luxury for you to enjoy. And it’s all from your pocket, naturally. However, since the app is user-driven, it is dependent on a large user base to be useful – this way as many items will be available as possible. It already has this in German-speaking areas with over 2 million downloads and three million listed products. Therefore, there is a substantial chance that this will be useful in the UK as well. Differences between the app and a real car boot sale include lack of neighbourhood friendly chat and no weeping infants. The product is designed for “design and second hand products”, so The University
Paper anticipates the indielovers and hipsters of Bristol to seize onto it and flood it with old suitcases, second-hand books, and dixie bikes. Co-Founder Katharina Klausberger said: “The UK is known for its tech savvy people! After constantly learning and improving the app over the last 15 months, we will be able to provide a great experience for vintage lovers in the UK”. Co-Founder Armin Strbac said: “Shpock’s simplicity, the picture-based design and, above all, the fun shopping experience, convinced our users in Germany and Austria. The first app store reviews from UK users show us that Shpock is ready to move to a new region.”
The Shpock app allows you to buy and sell items in a close proximity of one another

Top ten ways to procrastinate Stephanie-Rose Otieno
E
XAMS looming? Looking for a good reason not to get started on your revision? Don’t worry, here’s a list to show you that you’re not the only one. 1. Don’t get out of bed: Let’s face it, the weather probably isn’t great - why get out of bed? 2. Make a drink: So you had a cup of tea ten minutes ago. But hey, you do need to keep hydrated and keep those caffeine levels up, right? Maybe try a coffee this time, mix things up. 3. Tidy and clean: You’re a messy person, but all of a sudden tidying is an urgent priority. That sock draw looks like it needs to be arranged… 4. Make a list: You know all that work you’ve not done? Well obviously you couldn’t possibly make a start until you’ve made a to-do list about it first! 5. Internet shopping:
‘With so many addictive TV series – it’d be rude not to watch’
Summer is a time for exams, yes. But it’s also the time for holidays and balls. Hello, ASOS! 6. Be a social (media) butterfly: Make sure you’ve not been forgotten about during these dark, lonely times of revision and keep those Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles up-to-date. You could even tweet about how little work you’ve done - that’d be super original and cool, right? 7. Food: Search for the places that you have never tried and have lunch with your many friends. You could also buy different
cook books and try the recipes - you need to eat anyway. 8. Play catch-up: 2014 has seen the return of Game of Thrones and many more addictive TV series – it’d be rude not to watch, wouldn’t it? At least you’ll have something other than revision to talk about when you finally see your friends again! 9. Get fit: You despise exercise, but right now seems a better time than ever to join the gym. Books down, trainers on! 10. Maybe Later: You know you shouldn’t, but you just keep telling yourself that “there’s always later”. So, once you’ve completed this list, you know what to do – REPEAT! Having academic problems at University? Complaints
Plagiarism Season four of Game of Thrones is out now - procrastination couldn’t get any better!
Appealing exam marks Sukhvir Gill SOMETIMES students can have mitigating/extenuating circumstance at exam times. The biggest mistake they can make is to wait to see their results before raising the issue with the university. If you feel that something is impacting your performance, then submit the form as soon as you are aware of your impaired ability and do not assume that just because you told your tutor/professor
that it will be taken into account. Make sure you do it formally - a well-articulated submission can make all the difference. If you get a mark that you were not expecting but have no mitigating circumstances to raise, that does not mean you cannot challenge the grade but, be aware that the deadline for submission will be short. From my experience, I have often noticed that students draft appeals but do not focus them on the right
issues or make sure their reasoning falls within the grounds upon which they can submit the appeal. This is a fatal error and a sure fire way of it getting rejected so make sure you get advice.

CrossCountry Trains sponsors UP’s travel blog of Newcastle

Party Tyne Sam Webb
W
ITH BRISTOL being voted the number one city to live in the UK last month, CrossCountry Trains sent us on a trip to Newcastle to discover what some of Britain’s other great cities have to offer. Programmes like Geordie Shore have put Newcastle on the map, portraying it as the fast-paced and alcohol fuelled party capital of the UK. Being university students it’s only natural that we wanted to see what all the fuss was about… After a soul-destroying 5am start (unheard of in student life) and the five and a half hour train journey north we arrived in Newcastle. Within five minutes of walking through the streets, two things became apparent: 1) With more bars and pubs than you can shake a stick at, it’s clear the Geordie’s love a
drink! 2) Despite this ‘party hard’ reputation, a wealth of grand buildings, cobbled streets and a forty-metre high monument (of which we half expected to be dedicated to Gaz) led to the realisation of a rich history. We felt we owed it to the city to explore this so decided to visit TripAdvisor’s number one Tyne-side attraction Victoria Tunnel. After a thought-provoking tour of the old WWII air raid shelter, we discussed our plans for that night over a towering burger and a cold pint at the Ship Inn - a traditional and welcoming pub located close to the entrance to the tunnel. We then headed back to the Eurohostel for a power nap. We were pleasantly surprised to find the hostel resembled a 3 star hotel with a vibrant friendly atmosphere, lively bar and well-made - yet simple – rooms. All this was just £12 a night!

After discovering Newcastle has a severe lack of Off Licences, we had time to have a few drinks in the bar and then set out in search of the infamously cheap alcohol. We were not disappointed. With bars employing reps to reel you in, the classy town centre by day resembles the strips of Greece and Cyprus by night! The locals get started early and soon the streets were full of the fluffy pink headbands of hen parties, excitable students and the sound of pumping music. As morning approached, the memories of the night became hazier and we headed back to the hostel in preparation for the early check-out, only to be greeted by more hard-core party goers on their way out! CrossCountry Trains offer up to 40% off travel with a national railcard and NUS discount so if you are looking for new exciting destinations with a Grecianesque feel (without the sun), they are closer than you think. Just jump aboard!

Sun, sex and no need for parents Josie Finlay

QUICK web search of the term ‘lads holiday’ summons up a slug of stories that range from the unsavoury to the nightmarish. I’m inwardly grateful for the newspaper firewall preventing me from reading the passage entitled ‘It’s the last night and I’m having sex in a club toilet. The phone rings and it’s my girlfriend…’ Another tabloid slates Magaluf’s ‘fatal’ bingeing culture in an article headlined ‘An excess of drink, drugs and death’ – which you can tell is sinister because there’s alliteration. For many, the thought of migrating for a week to a grimier, sweatier Newcastle - with a signature skin tone closer to angry crimson than Geordie Shore’s terracotta - is decidedly uninviting. But whilst this reputation, hard-earned by generations of lads in coloured wayfarers and girls in ‘Horny Hen’ t-shirts, is perhaps largely deserved, party holidays aren’t

necessarily as harmful as the media makes them out to be. Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents notwithstanding, most young people aren’t taking a week out of their summer purely to dance topless on a podium, get a camel toe tattoo (Google it), and fall off their hostel balcony. It’s an exciting novelty; a fun way to be away from parents for the first time, a chance to meet other (maybe not so) like-minded people, the opportunity to really get to

Backpackers’ must-packers Sorcha Bradley
A BACKPACK that fits: You’re basically going to be carrying your home around on your back for months. If you want a relatively comfy journey you need to invest a bit of money in a lightweight backpack that fits your body type. A sheet: Bed bugs: the bane of every backpacker’s life. Some hostels are
infested with them. If your bed looks a tad suspect, you’ll be thankful to have your own sheet with you. Wet wipes: It may seem a bit gross now but sometimes you’ll be forced to forego a shower and have a wet wipe bath instead. Better than nothing, right? Water purification tablets: For when drinking the tap water will give you cholera.
A lock: Some people just aren’t very nice. Stuff does get stolen from backpacks at night/when you’re passed out in the bar after fifteen tequila shots. Clothes you don’t mind burning: After a few months of constant wear, you are never, ever going to want to wear those denim shorts again. Find more travel articles at www.unipaper.co.uk.

grips with David Guetta’s full discography and generally be eased into the clubbing culture. Think of it, if you will, as a kind of hors d’oeuvre to the intimidating entrée of Motion – or Syndicate, at least. Avoid the STIs, chavs and spending too many hours suckling on a nozzle of Sambuca like a thirsty hamster, and you have a week of relatively harmless, sort-of innocent fun. And you might even get a tan. The attitude of most of these holidaygoers is encapsulated perfectly in one online commenter’s explanation: ‘I’m going to Magaluf this year again because it is f***ing jokes with your mates.’ And if you find that it’s not your cup of tea, you can always claim that you went ‘ironically’. Treat it as a social experiment because people watching doesn’t get better than this.

Don’t stress, just store it Lucy Rogers

ITTING almost everything I own into the car to go to university was far more stressful than waiting for the August UCAS update! In hindsight, the overflowing fancy dress box was possibly an unnecessary addition to the three suitcases, four boxes and two holdalls of eighteen years’ worth of possessions I could not leave home without… And when I add the ‘necessary’ purchases over the course of the year courtesy of my student loan - to the list, I cannot bear to think of the trip (or trips) back home! To save hassle and time, choose self-storage this summer. Because let’s be honest, you’re not really going to open those textbooks once
the Pimm’s starts flowing back at home! Alligator Storage offers an all-inclusive student deal that covers insurance, a free pick-up and 15% off packaging materials. Storage units start from £8.49 a week and can fit anything from a few small suitcases to a large removal truck’s worth of items. For storage over the whole summer, Kelly’s Self Storage student package includes roadside collection, redelivery and insurance from £92.73 for an entire summer break. Store your luggage (and your stress) away for the summer! For more property articles please visit www.unipaper. co.uk. Don’t panic: there are still houses left paige williams
THE FIRST couple of months of the year are always a time when students are frantically trying to find somewhere to live in September. If you still haven’t found property for the next academic year then you may be worried that all the decent places have been taken and you’ll be forced to live in a small, damp flat with a dodgy boiler and
‘abandon all hope, ye who enter here’ scrawled on the front door. But do not panic! Sue Powell, founder of City Rental Services, states: “New rented properties become available to rent after Easter – sometimes due to new property purchases by landlords, planned refurbishments, or just late arrivals on our listings.” She continues: “These properties can often be a bargain, and we have
lots of choice after Easter, so don’t be afraid of missing out.” Term does not start until September, so you have until then to find property and just because you didn’t get it sorted in January doesn’t mean you’ll have to live in a squat next year. You can visit City Rental Services for updated housing listings and more information at www. city-rental-services.co.uk.
the deposit you handed over all that time ago will remain with the agency or landlord, leaving you worse off than you would normally be at the start of a long and loan-free summer. However, help is at hand. This assistance comes in the form of companies such as KSW, whose manager Kyle Warrington is keen to save students from being
ripped off, offering to clean the house at a small price to ensure students get their deposits back. KSW are also by no means the only company to offer this service and so, if your house is looking worn down, hire your own cleaners and save yourself some money. Check out our Enertainment pages for a £10 voucher from Kyle!

AS THE academic year winds down, an all too familiar problem enters the minds of many students: are we going to get our deposits back? Student living does inevitably take its toll on a house. A year’s worth of spilled drinks, broken furniture and stained carpets means that for many,

ON’T WANT to move to the city for a job? Don’t worry, you don’t have
to. We speak to employers every day, and often the feedback that we are given is that filling a graduate role in London is easy, they’re spoilt for choice. But trying to find candidates outside of major towns is much harder. Many graduates think that moving to a big city, whether London, Birmingham, Leeds or any of the major metropolitan hubs is a natural progression after university, whether you like it or not. The good news is that if the bright lights of the
city don’t excite you then there are many more opportunities much closer to home. Most of the major employers have national graduate schemes with regional offices located all over the country, and with thousands of graduates fighting for the spots in the big cities, letting the employer know that you would like to work in a particular office that is off the beaten track, or even that you are willing to relocate anywhere would definitely put you in a very positive light. It’s worth investigating who the top employers in your local area are, and contacting them directly to see if they take part in any graduate schemes. Another tactic is to identify the locations that your chosen
industry tends to flourish in and concentrate your search there. For example, the Midlands are favoured by engineering companies, not only in Birmingham but all of the surrounding area. With industries such as marketing where a lot of the work is now done online it is much easier for businesses to be mobile and not have to be based in London, and have spread to smaller but equally vibrant town such as Brighton and Bristol. Whatever you are looking for, if you are flexible with your location and creative with how you address the jobhunt, you will be in a much better position to secure that ideal first graduate job. www.milkround.com.

Personal trainer, Liam Dadds, discusses weight training for women
Create your dream body Liam dadds
T
HANKS to magazines, one of the most commonly used words used by women within the fitness industry is the word ‘tone’. The word tone unfortunately has no scientific meaning and is just a product of women commonly being afraid to use the word muscular when describing their dream body. Despite this; the aesthetic to the eye shapes and curves you see on athletic women are actually enlarged muscles. The human body has a limited number of abilities in regards to its composition and body mass. It may gain or lose body fat and gain or lose muscle. It is as simple as that, there is no toning. What needs to be understood is that muscles do not grow
‘shapes and curves you see on athletic women are actually enlarged muscles’
overnight, and the process of building muscle is very manageable. It takes so many years that a natural individual will never simply ‘get too big’. Testosterone is a primary muscle builder, and the average woman has around 90-95% less than men; meaning women need to work much harder to see results and develop a great body. Within the natural muscle building world, no one is huge and no one is particularly scary looking; so if you plan on building muscle naturally then you can be sure you will never look bulky,
vascular or too big. How to overcome the common misconceptions and progress towards your dream body: Learn how to lift correctly and to an intensity that takes you to muscular failure; research has shown that muscular failure is one of the primary contributors to muscle growth. This is what will help you develop the shape you desire. If you
are not pushing through mental boundaries, sweating and wanting to make loud noises then you may need to re-evaluate your training. Always try to further educate yourself about fitness and nutrition and follow fitness models on social networks as opposed to believing nonsense from unscientific writers in magazines; you will quickly learn how wrong the
magazines are. It is also important to consider that cardio may not be the best and only option, especially if you do not enjoy it. Search for images of female long distance runners versus sprinters and see the incredible difference. Research suggests endurance type exercise may hinder muscle growth. These athletes do an abundance of high intensity weight
training, cardio such as sprinting and this is why they have incredible physiques. Run, Bristol, Run! Olivia Petter
SUNLIGHT is finally shining onto The Downs so why not ditch the treadmill and try running outdoors? Running outside may seem daunting: you’re sweaty, you’re wearing shorts and there is a possibility of awkward run-by-waves as you pass people you know! However, there are many advantages to exercising in the open air. Firstly, you are likely to run for longer if you are engaging with your surroundings and passing interesting sights as opposed to staring at a blank wall in a gym. Secondly, the constant change in pace and incline that comes naturally with outdoor running will work plenty more muscles - pain really is gain. Thirdly, simply breathing in all that fresh air can do wonders to your energy levels, your heart and even your complexion! In Bristol we are pretty lucky when it comes to scenic running routes. Here are just a few you could try: For First Timers: 2km Stoke Hill - Saville Road - Westbury Road - Stoke Road For the Serious Sprinters: 5.6km Saint Pauls Road - Whiteladies Road Apsley Road - Pembroke Road - Guthrie Road - College Road - Clifton Down - Queens Road For more routes visit www.mapmyrun.com/ gb/bristol-eng/

UWE squash player set to rule the world UWE student beats world number 1 ‘The squash team at UWE is probably the best university team in the world’
Stuart Johnson
U
WE’S very own Mohammed El Shorbaggy of Egypt looks set to take over the top of the world squash rankings, after beating world number one Gregory Gaultier in the recent world series championships. El Shorbaggy, affectionately known as ‘Baggy’ by his friends at UWE, is the youngest player in the world’s top 20, and has been there since the tender age of 17. In the last three months there have been two world number ones – as Gregory Gaultier surpassed Nick Matthew. Baggy has beaten both while they were at the top, showing his class. Both of
these players are in their early 30’s (when squash player’s usually peak), and so it looks like Baggy could dominate world squash for some time. Known as one of the most exciting players to watch, some of his rallies have gone viral on Youtube and have been on Sky Sports News,
which for a relatively non-televised sport like squash is good going! Other UWE squash players have also been excelling; with Baggy’s brother Marwan on the cusp of breaking into the world’s top 20 (ranked 21) and Lucas Serme being just outside the top 50. UWE has
the only three players in the world’s top 100 who are not full time professionals – a big compliment to the support staff at the centre for sport. The squash team at UWE is probably the best university team in the world with the top 10 players all having played for their respective
countries in the juniors. From all of us here at The University Paper – Baggy, we wish you the best of luck in the British open next month. #bigupyourchestrepresentthewest! For more sports articles please visit www.unipaper. co.uk.
UWE win Varsity Boat Race Georgina Turner
L
AST Saturday saw UWE secure another win of the Varsity Blade over Bristol in the 20th Anniversary Varsity Boat Race. Over a 1450m course the rivals fought for the Varsity Blade, a title consisting of four races: the senior men’s 1st 8, senior women’s 1st 8, novice men’s 1st 8 and novice women’s 1st 8. Bristol’s novice women gained a victory over UWE, while it was UWE’s novice men who rowed to glory by a canvass – a surprise defeat for Bristol’s quietly confident team. For the senior teams it was again UWE
who triumphed, despite a previous long photo by John White streak of consecutive victories for Bristol’s senior women. In the men’s senior race UWE’s stronger team took the title, thus crowning UWE the winners of the Varsity Series 2014. Despite their defeat, Bristol remained positive, with Novice Women’s captains, Danielle Standish and Hannah Walton saying: “Congratulations to UWE - It was amazing for them to come away with such a convincing win. Regardless of our loss, Bristol can still be proud of their performance.” The Varsity score now stands 15 - 16 to UOB with only Polo (11th of May) and Gliding (14th of June) left. What you won’t miss Ryvita Khan Essay deadlines: Essays are awful, aren’t they? You have to have control over your own working hours so you leave it completely to the last minute and sit for sixteen hours straight with eighteen cups of coffee and a poorly written dissertation. Fortunately, entering the real world you will have that taken away from you – you’ll have to work when they tell you to. Dependency: Not just on drugs! Also money! Your parents and the government will stop giving you handouts and low interest loans. Now you have to work for a living – doesn’t that feel good? Students: Since you’re no longer a student it is time to join in the great British pastime of hating students. While Britain is in a state of identity crisis, students are one more group that angry Brits can rally against – so grab a pitchfork. They’re lazy, they drink too much, and they don’t feel a part of the town around. Thank God we were never students! They’re almost as bad as teenagers. What am I talking about? You should love University. It’s awful that you’re leaving. Now you have to get up at 7am every morning to earn money to pay the bills!

Should you get a job or go traveling after university? Adam Stead helps you decide
What to do after you graduate: work or travel? Adam Stead
Y
OU STEP out of University with your diploma in your hand, ready to face the big world. But you haven’t a job, and the prospect of sifting through job advertisements is awful. Worse is the prospect of ‘work’ itself. Were you designed solely for labour? What if you fall into a 9-5 routine from which you cannot escape? Unfortunately, travel is not the solution to fearing adulthood. You will eventually have to get a job and, at times, routine will bore you. You will have less leisure time, and the number of friendships you will be able to maintain will fall. You will move in with your long-term partner and start wearing slacks. Travel
Machu Picchu: Many say the climb to the heights of Machu Picchu can be a journey of self-discovery cannot change this, and to think it would be the last hurrah of enjoyment before a lifetime of routine is cynical. Even people wearing slacks have fun. That said, travel is an experience that at some point you should seize. And this is a convenient time to seize it – for a brief moment, you find
yourself disentangled from commitments. You can do anything – if you put yourself halfway across the world you will do something. Sat at home, too often we forget to do anything at all. Of course there is a ‘Gap Year’ stereotype. If you are too self-conscious to travel because you feel privileged,
arrogant, and not very selfaware, you are probably all these things. But hopefully on your travels you might find a nugget of self-knowledge and begin to curb this. This is why ex-travellers tell you to travel alone. That way, you don’t have a friend you’ve known for years to distract you from yourself, or from the
fascinating string of places and people you will bear witness to. You are not condemning yourself to eternal routine, or foregoing the last triumphant party if you choose to work. However, you ought to travel first. www.unipaper.co.uk.
liquid, which you will later play Russian roulette with, hoping for water. You are in a student house. Fortunately, finding a new house after graduation will be similar to finding an old one.
Some of your friends will be graduating, even if the one who always seemed to sort out the house stuff has decided to do an MA and spend another year as a student.
Renting will be cheaper for the time-being but it is important to note that money given to a landlord is no longer yours. When you invest money in a mortgage you just exchange money for real
estate, and you are not spending in the same way. The earlier you get a mortgage, the less money you will waste by giving it to landlords. www.unipaper.co.uk

THE TOWNHOUSE bar & restaurant is the perfect place for your celebration, situated just up Whiteladies Road, a stones throw from the university. We’ve taken inspiration from the food we grew up with - crunchy crackling on the pork like mum used to make, hot dripping on toast that granddad used to talk about and freshly baked bread done the proper way. Our properly aged beef comes from the Ashdale range and is superb quality. Pork is mainly Gloucester old spot and our lamb either Welsh salt marsh in season or good local stock from Somerset. Fish and shellfish is delivered daily from West Bay in Dorset and we pride ourselves on serving that day’s landings straight to our customers. Fruit and vegetables come in muddy and unpackaged and in different shapes and sizes like they should be, all direct from our local supplier Reg the Veg! We aim to mix the existing Georgian splendour with a funky touch of our own personalities to create a space that feels opulent, quirky and just a little kitsch where we couldn’t help ourselves. We get genuine pleasure from seeing a smile on your face, making sure your glass is filled and your taste buds are singing and dancing. But above all we want you to feel at home.
